Make detergent part of spring change By Jennifer Forker Associated Press It’s convenient to pick up some laundry detergent at the store, but it’s not difficult to create your own. Soap and water are a time-tested duo against dirt and germs, and homemade cleaners can carry away grime without added chemicals or perfumes. All it takes are a few, simple ingredients to make laundry detergent — liquid or powder — and fabric softener. Then cut down on drying time and static cling by tumbling wet clothes with homemade dryer balls. Faith Goguen Rodgers’ switch to homemade cleaners began a few years ago after she used a commercial-brand cleaner on the bathtub. “I’d cleaned it, and then I really didn’t want to get in it. The bleach smell and feel — it didn’t feel good,” she says.
“Then when I had kids, it didn’t make sense at all. It feels a lot safer knowing what’s in my cleaners.” Rodgers is an herbalist with three young children who creates all the cleaners she uses in her Lafayette, Colo., home — even the toothpaste. While the health piece is “really big” for her, she’s also motivated by cost. “You save a ton of money making your own,” she says, especially if you buy ingredients in bulk. Homemade cleaners, particularly laundry soap, lack much odor, but a pretty scent can be added with essential oils. This lifts the laundry-detergent-making project up a notch — adding some olfactory fun. “You and your family can get creative and come up with your own signature laundry scent,” Rodgers writes on The Little Herbal blog, where she posts her natural cleaning recipes. “Our laundry comes
out clean and smelling fresh.” Her favorite combinations of essential oils for laundry detergent include lemon and eucalyptus, orange and geranium, and grapefruit and lavender. Sherri Griffin’s foray into homemade laundry soap began when she got a rash and wanted something gentler than store-bought laundry detergent. She started researching alternatives, and recommends checking out what’s in commercially made products on the Environmental Working Group’s website. An Orlando, Fla., nurse, Griffin started a blog, Overthrow Martha, to educate people about natural cleaners. Besides sharing a fabric softener recipe, she recommends simple-to-make dryer balls. Dryer balls decrease drying time, elimi- This photo provided by Sherri Griffin shows dryer balls that renate static cling and decrease duce drying time, static cling and wrinkles. Griffin, of Orlando, Fla., calls her homemade laundry detergent, fabric softener and See Detergent, D7 dryer balls “a dream team.”

Don’t prune too early, and other bulb-growing tips By Dean Fosdick Associated Press Veteran bulb growers have learned to put patience ahead of pruning in helping their perennials bloom season after season. They’re in no rush to remove the unsightly leaves and stems of these botanical storehouses, which need time after flowering to renew their growth cycle. “We consider the foliage of the bulbs the ‘recharging batteries’,” said Becky Heath, president and chief executive officer of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs at Gloucester, Va. “If they aren’t recharged, the flowers won’t bloom again.” Bulbs will green up despite premature pruning, but return with fewer and smaller blossoms. How long must you wait before trim-
ming the foliage to get successive seasons of color? “After spring-flowering bulbs finish blooming, allow for approximately six to eight weeks before removing the foliage to ground level,” said Hans Langeveld, coowner of Longfield-Gardens.com, a retail website for bulbs, perennials and edibles in Lakewood, N.J. “Another rule of thumb is to wait until the foliage turns brown and dries out.” That garden grooming tip applies to all spring-flowering bulbs including tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, alliums and specialty varieties, Langeveld said. But there are ways to make the decay less unsightly. “An idea is to combine bulbs with other perennials in the borders like hosta so that hosta foli-
age covers the dying bulb foliage,” he said. Summer-blooming bulbs that flower until cold weather arrives need differing levels of maintenance. “This (first killing frost) would be the time to cut to ground level and dig the bulbs that are not winter-resistant, like dahlias, gladiolus and begonias,” Langeveld said. Other post-bloom, bulb-care suggestions: • Braiding. “The only foliage that lends itself to be braided are daffodils,” Langeveld said. “It is not a necessity, but it will help keep your borders neat and tidy.” • Seed pods. “Make sure to remove the seed pods that sometimes form after blooming,” he said. “These eat up a lot of energy from the bulbs.”
Associated Press
Miniature daffodils are seen March 8 in a pet cemetery that will need time to recharge for the next growing cycle near Langley, Wash. Small bulbs can make a big impact but they need six to eight weeks before pruning to rebuild their energy for the next flowering season. Don’t remove the unsightly leaves and stems too soon if you’re looking for a similar burst of color next season. • Fertilize when planting for an extension professor with the healthier roots. Before and during University of Vermont. “This can bloom also are good times to apply bulb fertilizer, said Leonard Perry, See Bulbs, D7

Essential oils can be added to them every few loads to softly scent clothes. “I often hear that people can’t give up the fresh smell they get from using dryer sheets, but what people don’t understand is that smell comes from . chemicals,” says Griffin. Karyn Siegel-Maier shares laundry and other “green” cleaning formulas in “The Naturally Clean Home” (Storey, 2008). The publisher recently posted her recipes for liquid and powder laundry detergent at its blog, Inside Storey, to “sanitize, soften and scent clothes and linens — naturally.” Some expert recipes:
Rodgers’ Homemade Laundry Detergent (powder)
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the washing soda, borax and baking soda. Mix well to get rid of clumps. Add the essential oils, if desired. Mix them into the powder well to avoid clumping. 3. Add the grated soap and mix ingredients together. 4. Store detergent in a halfgallon mason jar or other well-sealed container. Use 2 to 4 heaping tablespoons per load of laundry.
Basic Laundry Liquid Formula from Siegel-Maier’s “The Naturally Clean Home” 2¼ cups liquid castile soap ¼ cup white distilled vinegar 1 tablespoon glycerin ¾ cup water 10 to 15 drops essential oil of your choice (or skip the essential oils by using a scented liquid castile soap) Combine all the ingredients in a plastic container or squirt bottle. Shake once or twice before adding to the wash. Use ¼ cup per average load; ½ cup for extra large or heavily soiled loads.
3 cups washing soda (similar to baking soda; look for it near laundry products at the supermarket) 3 cups borax 1 cup baking soda 1 bar of castile (olive oilbased) soap, such as Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap Griffin’s Natural Pure, organic essential oils Laundry Fabric (optional) 1. Grate the bar of soap into Softener 3 cups white vinegar a small bowl and set aside.
¼ cup rubbing alcohol 20 drops of essential oil (optional) Combine all ingredients in a glass jar and shake. Add to the fabric softener dispenser of washing machine.
Griffin’s Wool Dryer Balls 100 percent wool yarn Pantyhose Essential oil (optional) 1. Wrap wool yarn around two or three fingers at least a dozen times, then make a bow by wrapping yarn tightly around middle of wrapped yarn. Bring the two sides together and continue wrapping tightly in different directions to make a small ball the size of a lemon. Repeat to make several balls. 2. Push the wool balls into one pantyhose leg, knotting the pantyhose between each ball so they don’t touch. Run through the washer with a load of towels on hot cycle, then toss into dryer on hot. Once dry, remove from pantyhose. Each ball should appear “felted” — the wool fibers tightly adhered. Snip any loose strands. To use: 1. Scent balls with essential oil, if desired (it’ll last a few loads). 2. Toss at least 2 balls into dryer with wet laundry.

and shake the soil off bulbs after bloom, leaving leaves attached if not died off already. Bulbs should separate naturally, otherwise plant back ones still joined together,” he said. “Don’t forcibly pry bulbs apart.” Should you treat tulips as annuals or perennials? Tulips need to be in dry, well-drained soils during their summer dormancy if they’re to multiply or return to bloom, said Scott
Kunst, head gardener and owner of Old House Gardens in Ann Arbor, Mich. “That’s hard to come by in the rainy eastern half of the U.S. or where people water during the summer,” he said. “In those situations, many people just grow tulips as annuals.” For more about postbloom care of bulbs, see this Iowa State University fact sheet: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/article/ yard-and-garden-daffodils

How to start your garden indoors Brandpoint
home improvement network. More than 1.5 million professionals participate in the network, offering services for more than 90 million projects. “Growing seedlings is something homeowners can easily do on their own and save their money to hire professionals for larger projects.” Starting seedlings offers many advantages, including the ability to get a jumpstart on planting. Growing plants from seed is less expensive than buying small plants and provides access to a wider variety of plants. The pros at Porch.com offer these tips:
While cooler temperatures slowly fade, gardeners across the country eagerly await the arrival of spring — and the chance to get outdoors and grow something. If gardening is your passion, you don’t have to wait until the weather is perfect to get started. In fact, working ahead by growing your own seedlings is a great way to ensure your garden is successful throughout the warmer months. “Planting seedlings indoors before transplanting them into the ground is a great use of time and money,” said Darin Brockelbank, owner of Metro-Green- Selecting seeds scape, landscape design Some seeds can be planted and outdoor specialists, and and started indoors, while members of the Porch.com others need to go in the
ground outdoors. As you’re choosing seeds for your garden, read the packets thoroughly to ensure the seeds you’re buying are appropriate for indoor planting. Be aware that many vegetable seeds need to be planted directly in the ground. Most packages will also include information on what time of year to plant, so follow the guidelines for best results. In general, start seeds about six weeks before the last frost date. Check the Farmer’s Almanac Frost Date Calculator to find out when that is in your area.
Choosing containers Seed starter kits are available for easy planting, but any container will do as long as it is about 2 to 3 inches deep and has drainage holes.
Egg cartons and paper cups are inexpensive and easy options; be sure to poke drainage holes in the bottoms. Fill your containers with a good soil mix — never use regular soil from your yard. Seeds need just the right texture and mixture of nutrients to succeed. Covering your containers with plastic wrap or plastic lids will help keep soil and seeds moist.
Setting environment In order to germinate, most seeds need a steady temperature of about 78 F. You can create localized warmth for seeds through use of electric heaters or heat mats placed under containers. You can also try placing containers atop warm appliances, such as a refrigerator, as long as they
will also receive ample light in the location. Once seedlings push through the soil, you can move them to a windowsill where they’ll get more natural light.
Caring for seedlings It’s important to provide seedlings with constant moisture, but don’t let the soil get soggy. If you used plastic wrap or covers, remove them from containers once seeds have sprouted. When leaves appear, begin fertilizing with a liquid fertilizer. Pay close attention to the dosage amounts recommended on the fertilizer packaging; seedlings are fragile. Check on seedlings daily until you’re ready to plant them outdoors. “If your plants begin to bud before you transplant

them to the outdoors, wait to move them until they are fully bloomed,” Brockelbank says. “If you transplant them while they are buds and cool weather hits, they could get frost bite and die. When it’s time to transplant the seeds, make sure the soil is no cooler than 60 degrees.” Of course, not everyone with the urge to grow a garden has the time to invest or the green thumb to achieve it. If you find yourself lacking the resources, Porch. com has professionals who can help you get — and keep — your garden growing. “The hardest part of planting seeds indoors is caring for them before they are transplanted,” Brockelbank says. “Once they are transplanted, the plants should be very low maintenance.”

Get the lawn mower ready for spring Brandpoint With spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to tune up your lawn mower for the season ahead. A yearly tune-up is important to ensure all parts of your mower are functioning properly and safely. Use these eight tips to rev up your engine and get your mower ready for spring: 1. Read the operator’s manual. Before operating your lawn mower, always read the operator’s manual in its entirety to ensure safe and proper use of the equipment. Also be sure you understand and follow all instructions and are familiar with all the controls and functions. It’s best to keep your
manual in a safe place in case you need to reference it at any time. 2. Check your fuel. Fuel can go bad in as little as 30 days and bad fuel can result in a sputtering engine or prevent the mower from turning over. If the fuel has a strange odor or has become thick and viscous, it’s best to drain it. Once you’ve drained the gas, fill the tank with fresh fuel. Check your operator’s manual for information on the right fuel type for your mower as using improper fuel can damage your equipment. 3. Lubricate the throttle and moving parts. Leftover grease and oil can harden while your mower sits during the winter. To help loosen the hardened oil, apply a
light lubricant on the narrow spring of the throttle. If you have a mower with adjustable heights, like Yard Machines’ 21-inch high wheel 3-in-1 push mower, make sure to lubricate the lever, as well as any other moving parts. 4. Clean the air filter. Air filters shield your engine from dirt and can easily become clogged with oil and debris. This can prevent oxygen from entering the engine, resulting in coughs and sputters. It’s recommended you replace your air filter every season for best engine performance. To clean a washable foam filter, soak it in warm, soapy water and squeeze it dry. If your unit uses a cardboard or paper filter, simply replace it.

5. Check and change the oil. Always check the oil level before using your mower, and be sure to change the oil filter and add new oil after using your mower for about five to eight hours. Running a motor on low oil can lead to low compression and can burn out the engine. Overfilling, however, can damage the seals. In this case, remove the oil plug, drain the old oil and refill the engine with the oil amount and type indicated in your operator’s manual. 6. Install a new spark plug. Spark plugs are inexpensive and should be replaced once a season. Over time, they can become rusted and corroded, and a fouled or corroded plug won’t spark at all. Remember to always remove the spark plug wire
before servicing. When removing the old one, check the spark plug cable for signs of damage or rust. Do not clean or reuse old spark plugs. 7. Inspect blades. A dull blade will cause grass tips to turn brown, and weakened grass blades are prone to pests and disease. If your blades are bent or dull, replace them with new blades to deliver a clean cut, optimum performance, inc rea se d l i fe fo r yo u r equipment and professional-looking results for your lawn. However, always replace parts with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) pieces that are specifically made for your machine to maximize performance and results. 8. Replace the belt or bat-
tery. Always be sure to clean any debris, leaves or grass clippings from under the deck to prevent rust and corrosion. If you own a self-propelled unit and the belt is heavily worn or shows signs of cracking, replace it immediately. If you have a unit with an electric start, however, make sure your battery didn’t drain over the winter. Check your operator’s manual for specific instructions for charging or replacing your battery. Getting your mower in optimal shape is crucial for a well-maintained lawn and a safe season. Prepare for spring, and visit homedepot.com for more information about Yard Machines products and lawn care tips.

Beyond Lego, some new building toys By Kim Cook Associated Press Building and construction toys have been a fixture in playrooms since, well, forever, and there are several reasons for their enduring appeal. “Directions aren’t necessary, no rules or instructions are needed. Children are just provided space to grow,” says Judith Ellis, founder and chairwoman of the Toy Design department at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. “Construction toys empower children. They offer a child a chance to be adventurous — to ask, ‘what if,’ to think abstractly, developing creative intelligence. Building develops strategic thinking. It provides visionary perspective and it increases attention spans,” Ellis says. While Lego and Mega Blox are category stalwarts — Lego celebrates its 82nd birthday this year and has a hit movie in theaters — there are other interesting options to consider. At the recent Toy Fair 2014 in New York, the building category was robust, according to Adrienne Apell, trends specialist for the Toy Industry Association. “It’s been very hot, and that’s going to continue,” she says.
“We love this trend because it speaks to the fact that classic play patterns appeal to kids, generation after generation.” Adrienne Apell Toy Industry Association
“We love this trend because it speaks to the fact that classic play patterns appeal to kids, generation after generation.” Parents enjoy building stuff too, and bring their own childhood memories to the play table. Magna-Tiles are colorful geometric tiles with embedded magnets along the edges. There are also translucent tile sets to make seethrough creations, including “stained glass” windows. The plastic is Pthalate- and Latex-free. The smooth-sided blocks, rectangles and triangles come in soft, natural colors in both starterset sizes (with a felt travel pouch) and larger sets of 40 to 480 pieces. There’s a car-
building set, too. (www.tegu. com) Toddler builders might like to start with Edushape’s sturdy foam blocks and shapes. After mastering simple tangrams, stacked castles and rudimentary fitted bits, kids can graduate to Kiddy Connects — a collection of snap-and-lock plastic pieces that include elbows and other unusual shapes. (www.knex.com) And targeting scienceoriented young girls, Goldie Blox kits offer the chance to build things like dunk tanks, spinning machines and belt drive machines. Developed by Stanford engineering graduate Debbie Sterling, the kits feature intrepid young inventor Goldie, her friends and her dog Nacho tackling various obstacles using innovation and savvy. (www.goldieblox.com) Finally, for the kids who are always taking apart broken appliances or rewiring the stereo, consider littleBits. It offers what you need to make all kinds of elec-

Turn an old deck into outdoor oasis Brandpoint It’s easy to dream of perfectly pristine outdoor spaces when looking at the decks in magazines and online, but too often what we want and what we have don’t align. If your deck suffers from weathered wood, loose railings or dated balusters, you’re not alone. The good news is there are surprisingly simple ways to give your deck a facelift and transform it into the outdoor oasis you want in as little as one weekend. Consider these five ways you can update your deck and grow your real estate value:
even some color and light to your deck is to update your post caps. Most can be removed by gently tapping them with a mallet. Then it’s an easy DIY project to add new post caps simply by using exterior construction adhesive. These decorative caps come in a variety of styles, including basic wood that can be stained to perfectly coordinate with your existing color scheme. If you want to add a bit more pizzazz to your outdoor space, give your deck the Deckorators touch with classic copper post caps or solar powered caps that illuminate once the sun sets.
provide an important safety feature. But they also add to the visual appeal of the deck and are a main feature in your line of sight. If your wood balusters are worn, you can instantly upgrade your outdoor space with new options. Metal balusters, for example, come in a variety of designs to match any home’s style — from contemporary to traditional. Have a stunning view from your deck? Enjoy uninterrupted sight lines with glass balusters that simultaneously maintain a deck’s safety and visual appeal.
may be showing wear. Protect the integrity of the wood and refresh the look of your outdoor space by cleaning deck boards and giving them a new coat of paint or stain. Start by scrubbing or power spraying off dirt and grime, and then let wood dry thoroughly. Next, use stain or paint made specifically for decks to help protect the wood from the elements. Just as indoor paint transforms a room inside your home, new stain or paint on your deck boards will make your outdoor area look new and refreshed, making you feel like you have a whole new outdoor area.
options to match any style or price point. You can go with an off-the-shelf product or customize one to fit your personal design aesthetic. For example, Deckorators co-extruded composite CXT railing is ultra-low maintenance and gives you the options to mix-and-match railings, posts, balusters and caps for a look that’s entirely your own. Not looking to do a full railing replacement? Sand down wood railings and apply a new coat of stain for an instant update.
Install lighting
A great deck will serve as an extension of your home both day and night, but if Bring back deck boards you don’t have proper lightAdd or update post caps Replace balusters After seasons of changing Refresh railings ing, you’ll be heading inOne of the easiest ways Balusters are connected weather and lots of foot trafWhen it comes to deck doors once the sun goes to add a dash of design and to the railing vertically and fic, your wood deck boards railings, there are endless down. Add visual appeal
and an element of safety to your deck with easy DIY lighting options. Lighting on your stairs adds a splash of drama and makes it easy to get around. Balusters are an often-overlooked item that can provide a great lighting location too. Solar Baluster Lights install around 3/4inch round balusters with nothing more than a Phillips screwdriver. Finally, Solar Accent Lights can be placed on posts to illuminate pathways and deck edges. Expanding a home’s livable space to the outdoors is a top home improvement trend. With these simple tips, your deck will find new life and you’ll be able to enjoy plenty of time outdoors with Mother Nature. For more information, visit www.deckorators.com.
