Business Manager Patrick Phillips sentry@jacksonprep.net Cover Photos by: Stewart McCullough (top) Mary Dunbar (bottom) The Sentry is a student publication updated throughout the year. As student writers, we try to reflect the thoughts of our most important readers-- the students of Jackson Prep. Because of this, we attempt to approach many issues, some more controversial than others. Nevertheless, the Sentry staff serves the school--her students, her faculty, her family, and her community. The staff hopes to inform, to educate, to entertain, and to question for the betterment of Prep and the lives of people in the Jackson community. The newspaper is produced by the Sentry staff, consisting of students both in and out of the senior high journalism classes. EDITORIAL POLICY The Sentry accepts outside editorial pieces under the following guidelines: •Letters to the Editor are a great way to make your voice heard. We do not print unsigned letters. •Longer concerns may be addressed via a Guest Editorial, with a minimum of 250 words. To be considered, such opinion pieces should not simply be rants, but should be about things that can be changed or alleviated, should suggest a solution to a problem. Pieces should not simply jab at things of which the writer does not approve. Humorous opinion pieces are subject to the judgement of the editorial staff. •All opinion pieces are the views of the author, and the author only, with the exception of staff editorials, which are unsigned and and reflect the consensus view of the students in the Sentry class. Staff editorials are the only columns in the paper that express the unified view of the Sentry staff. This staff editorial process is comprised of two main steps. First, the staff talks amongst themselves about a topic and organizes a position on the issue on which all class members can agree. The editorial is then written and run past the staff members for approval. •Submit letters to the editor or guest editorials to sentry@jacksonprep.net. •Questions or comments? Our mailing address is P.O. Box 4940, Jackson, MS 39296. We would love to hear your opinions.

One School, Many Books puts reading in spotlight Tynes CArroll On Wednesday, September 7, the third annual One School Many Books event took place on campus. Groups of students met throughout the campus to discuss the books the students had chosen. The purby

pose of the event was to highlight the importance of reading to members of the Prep community and to expose students to works they might not have otherwise considered. The books had been mostly suggested by faculty and

staff members, and they were present for the discussions, although, as Coach John Haberman noted, “These discussions are meant to be led by the students, not by faculty.” Compared to last year’s selection, students said that there was a bit more variance in the selection this year. Sophomore Meriwether Marchetti claimed, “I can connect with it [Tiger Lily] because it felt like it was my life in a book.” Over the few years since OSMB’s debut, each book had a teacher assigned to that certain book, but that has changed this year, with a number of the suggestions having been put forward by students. Senior Sarah Riley Jicka, the group leader of Mysterious Benedict Society, made out the quiz herself and had the stu-

dents perform mental games and brain teasers, just as the plot of the book had focused on. After the students took a

short quiz and discussed their book as a group, they headed out to Patriot Avenue to enjoy coffee and cake.

The Music Man prepares to hit Prep stage Avery Andress sArAh Avery huffmAn The school musical is a production that is always looked forward to at Jackson Prep. It involves close to 200 Prep students who donate large amounts of their time to the production. This year the musical is The Music Man. Senior Lawson Marchetti, who has been involved in many other productions, has the title role in the upcoming event. The Music Man has been a Broadway musical and a hit movie. This musical tells the story of a man, Harold Hill, arrives in River City, Iowa and pretends that he knows a lot about music. Actually he does not know anything about music, but is an accomplished con man. He plans on making money and leaving the town, but he falls in love with the librarian, Marian. Ms. Diane Holbert, the director, is assisted by Ms. Anna Griffin, who is helping with acting and staging. Ms. Holbert said that she loves the by

time period of this musical, which is the early 19th century, partly because of the costumes and the sets. She said that she has never done a play during

this time period and is excited about it. She likes that there is a quartet of men in the musical, as well as the other different characters in the musical also.

She has loved working with the cast. Ms. Griffin said that this is her all time favorite musical and that it has been very fun working with this group. She enjoys helping with the musical and said that it has been a real joy. She loves that one of the main characters is a librarian. She also said that there are a great group of parents working on the sets that are committed to the arts at Jackson Prep. Ms. Holbert and Ms. Griffin said that they love working together on this musical, and it has been so much fun. Marchetti said he was most excited about the musical because he was able to develop such a complex character. He is also thrilled to act with all the other people involved. He was happy to get the lead his senior year since he has been involved in performance his entire Prep career. Performances of The Music Man will be Saturday, October 22 at 2pm and 7pm and Monday, October 24 at 7pm.

The Music Man promises to be enjoyable for the whole Prep community. Tickets can be purchased online at www.jacksonprep.org or at the door.

News & Features Marsha Hobbs honored for excellence in teaching Paul andreSS On August 22, 2016, President Obama named 213 mathematics and science teachers as recipients of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Jackson Prep physics and engineering teacher Ms. Marsha Hobbs was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Presidential Awardees received a certificate signed by the President of the United States, a trip to Washington, D.C. to by

attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities, and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. Ms. Hobbs said on the first night they had a formal dinner at the zoo. She woke up early every day to do professional development with the other recipients of the award. “I enjoyed my experience in D.C. It was quite an impressive group of teachers, and I also enjoyed networking with them. The awards ceremony at Constitution Hall was very nice.”

FCA takes a new direction with student leadership

Sarah riley Jicka The Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting has been a staple at Prep for many years. Whether you are an athlete or not, FCA meetings are a way for members of the Prep community to come together and worship. This year, FCA is headed in a new direction. Lead by senior Presidents Chatham Kennedy and Keaton Landfair, FCA has renewed an effort to bring in new and engaging speakers. Another feature this year is an emphasis on student leadership. More students can by

now be involved in the form of student prayer chaplains. According to Maclain Kennedy, a Sophomore Chairperson, FCA devotions this year will be “more productive” than in the past and attract more students. Chatham credits this growth to the new student involvement. She says, FCA is really fun this year, and you don’t have to be athletic to attend.” In addition to devotions and singing, FCA now includes games and God Stories, weekly testimonies given by either Prep students or faculty members.

Overseen by sponsor Coach Andrew Mitchell, FCA has several exciting meetings planned for October. Ms. Elizabeth Nenon, Young Life leader and sports photographer, is coming to speak October 9th. New England Patriots wide receiver Wilson Van Hooser will be at Prep October 21st to share his faith. Students interested in FCA should come to the Carlisle room at 7:30 on Friday mornings for doughnuts and good talks about Jesus.

Student Council looks to have another successful year Mary Patton MurPhy Senior High Student Council’s 2016-2017 club members and their new sponsor, Ms. Laura Hepner, have had a successful year of leadership and service thus far. Over the past few months, these senior high students gathered together for workshops and training in order to discuss the qualities of a good student council member and to prepare for the various activities that they would sponsor this year. One of Student Council’s biggest fundraisers is the school supply store, which took place the week before school started. While boxes and boxes by

October 2016

of supplies filled the cafeteria, student council students were eager to unpack and organize them in order to make the supply store an easy and exciting experience for Prep parents and students. The hours invested in this event definitely paid off by the end of the week, and Strudent Council President Paul Andress agrees saying, “A lot of the student council members helped out, which made things go smoothly.” In addition to the supply store, on September 2nd, the Senior High Student Council sponsored a bus trip to an away football game in Natchez. Tickets for seats on the

bus were open to all students in grades 10-12, and many attendees mentioned that it was a fun experience. Stewart McCullough, a sophomore, said, “I really liked socializing on the way down there and on the way back.” Student Council is looking forward to incorporating this event into their agenda again next year. The most recent activity put on by the Senior High Student Council was a party for students that attended the Prep girls’ soccer game against Jackson Academy. The game was at home, and free pizza was provided for all Prep students that arrived to support

the Lady Patriots. Senior, Jordan Davis, said, “There were a

lot of students there and pretty much all of the pizza was eaten. The game was a lot of fun!” Prep soccer players also pulled out a win, 1-0, which made the party taste even better. Student Council’s school involvement and service have produced exciting experiences for students in many ways. However, these experiences are just getting started. Stay tuned as the Senior High Student Council plans for more events in the future such as Homecoming and Powderpuff Football.

Prep responds to Louisiana flooding

Louisiana flooding left many in need. Photo courtesy of Julia Sumrall.

Sarah riley Jicka In mid-August, rain began to fall in Louisiana. It was nothing unusual, since it rains in Louisiana frequently. But by the third day, people began to notice a problem. The water had stopped draining to the rivers. Many of the rivers had begun to overflow. Approximately 20 inches and 6.9 trillion gallons of rain had saturated Louisiana. While removed from the flooded areas, the Prep community has nonetheless been affected by the disaster, and has responded accordingly. One of many Prep connections to the flood is through John Dubberly, father of Hays (12th grade) and Preston (10th grade), has customers in the area, such as, Mr. Brent Fisher, who lives in Baton Rouge. “This was the most destruction that I have ever seen caused by water. I was lucky, but I have co-workers that lost everything. Some are still living in shelters provided by the Red Cross,” said Fisher. Some of Fisher’s other coworkers lost their cars, and their homes had 3 or more feet of water in them. Many in the Prep community have family and friends in southern Louisiana. Lake Wartes spoke with Baton Rouge resident Jodie Rose Bacon, a friend of his grandmother said, “The flooding made it very difficult to go anywhere or do anything. I don’t have a car and all public transport was cancelled so I was stuck in my apartment unable to go anywhere.” by

Juniors Kole Crotwell and Tanner McCraney are congratulated by Col. William Merrell on their contributions to the Red Cross.

More than 30,000 people and 1,400 animals have been displaced from their homes, and many members of the Prep family have joined the relief effort. On Saturday August 20, volleyball head coach Ms. Leah Thomson and student volunteers from the volleyball team drove to Louisiana to help an animal shelter in need of repair and donations. Freshman Carol Currie made the journey to build kennels and take care of the animals. “We built eight kennels, fed the dogs, and gave them water,” said Carol. “It was great.” Prep students were able to help distribute truckloads of donations, and Coach Thomson rescued a dog from the flood waters that will now be rehabilitated as a part of her rescue organization Madison ARK. Jackson Prep juniors Tanner McCraney and Kole Crotwell also saw the need to help in a big way. Moved by

the devastation, they went to Global Leadership Institute director Colonel Merrell asking what to do. He helped them get in contact with the American Red Cross. They were extremely excited for Kole and Tanner’s willingness and compassion to help out. The Red Cross gave the two students the supplies they needed. They set up collection buckets by the concession stands at Prep’s season-opening football game against Oak Forest so people could donate money to the cause. Crotwell and McCraney also set up a tent by the ticket booth, so people could donate there as well. Including contributions made after game day, Kole and Tanner raised $2060 for the Red Cross to use in Louisiana. -RJ Green, Tanner McCraney, Preston Dubberly, and Lake Wartes also contributed to this story.

Pet Profile: Frito-Bill Junior by chatham kennedy Who lives in a fishbowl in the Senior High Office? Frito-Bill Jr.! Since August 22nd, Jackson Prep’s latest mascot has been making a splash on campus. Emily Clark, a sixth period senior office worker, brought him to his forever home after Ms. Hetzel’s biology class conducted an experiment to see the fish’s breathing patterns would react when placed in water of varying temperatures. To help him adapt to his new lifestyle, Coach Nell Bradford purchased a tank for the little orange fish. His aquarium sports his favorite colors, which include red and blue, so it is littered with red rocks and plastic and has a blue plant. When referring to Frito-Bill Jr.’s introduction to the senior high, Clark said,

“It’s been super awesome. Everyone loves him. The first day we got him everyone just stood around watching him swim.” He is known by his his aunts Coach Nell Bradford and Ms. Lelia Manning as a strong swimmer and diver. He is the Jackson Prep Swim team’s biggest fan. When not practicing his diving routine or playing with his dog, Mike, Frito-Bill assists Ms. Manning with her office work. Frito-Bill Jr. considers himself a lucky fish because he has a plethora of nicknames: FB2, Bill, and Frito. His godfather, Dr. Luke Nealey, says, “I call him Bob.” If a student needs something to smile about during the day, stop by the Senior High Office and say hello to Frito-Bill Jr.

Student Council excited for new year Stewart Mccullough and tori newSoMe Even though the school year is still relatively new, the junior high student council has already started giving back to the community. Their first project was bringing Gatorade and snacks to local fire stations to make sure that they are hydrated at work during the hot fall. This event was planned and run by students. This year’s junior high student council sponsors are Ms. Meg Hanes and Ms. Carolyn Tatum. It is Ms. Hanes’ second year to help out with student council, and it is Ms. Tatum’s 15th year. One of the many problems that the student council faces is that most people do not recognize or know who is on the student council. To fix this problem, they held their first meeting as a “town hall” to give students a chance to meet their class officers. While this forum was not mandatory, around 50 students attended the town hall meeting. The junior high student council is planning ahead for the year already. They are by

planning on working with the Mustard Seed, a charity that helps with the development of adults with special needs. They look forward to working with the “seedsters” during Halloween and Easter. The student council is also hoping on partnering with the Mississippi Children’s Home. Another way the student council is giving back to the community is that they are wanting to give Christmas gifts to the children that might not receive gifts.

Robotics prepping for season Stewart Mccullough While many sports are in full swing at the beginning of school, the Junior High Robotics club has just began their preparation for the upcoming season. At robotics tournaments, members compete in a series of tasks to complete an overall task. The board they use is similar to a game board with different squares and lines. The club builds certain robots to complete tasks such as: move a shark from one side of the square to the other or make a ball move from one end of the board to the other. Robotics is mainly focused on the functionality of machines and robots, but engineering plays a vital role as well. The club finds themselves using

the 3D printers quite often to improve the lives of others. In recent history, some members of the senior high robotics team created a 3d printed hand for a young boy without one. This year, club members use robotics to affect both humans and animals. The theme for this year is animal allies. This subject allows for students

to use 3D printers and other pieces of machinery to allow dogs help humans. Andrew Banks and Selby Ireland are two students that have already emerged as leaders. They broke out as leaders and shared their knowledge with others during Prep Preview as they took charge of showing robotics to many people who toured prep that day. I am eager to start our season with our first tournament in December. I feel that the team has great talent and love for robotics. The robotics team meets on Tuesdays from 4-5 P.M. The magazine was led by editor-in-chief Jack Mullen, who is a current 10th grader, along with faculty sponsor Ms. Kimberly Reedy. Writing, photography, and editing contributions to Mindprints came from various Jackson Prep students in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades.

Cheerleaders hold mini-clinic Mary Patton MurPhy Stewart Mccullough Recently, the Junior High Cheerleaders held a mini clinic for members of the pep squad. The pep squad consists of girls that are in the 6th and 7th grades. At this clinic, the junior high girls taught the younger cheerleaders a cheer that they will soon perform during halftime of one of their football games. Elizabeth Downing, a ninth grade member of the Junior High Cheer team, said, “It was so fun getting to meet by

and

all the girls. They were all so fun and sweet.” The Junior High Cheerleaders are led by Ms. Katherine Horlock, the 7th grade Life Science teacher. “I enjoy coaching the students that I teach”, said Mrs. Horlock. “I can see them grow in the classroom and out of the classroom. I also love creating school spirit with the junior high cheerleaders.” The Junior High Cheerleaders and the rest of the student body look forward to watching the pep squad perform their new routine.

Luci lives in southern Germany in a town called Tegernsee. There she attends Kloster Tegernsee. The school is based in a castle built in the mid-8th century. It serves as a church and a brewery - quite different from Jackson Prep. Her school starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 12:50 p.m., so Luci is not a huge fan of Prep’s hours. Having taken 6 years of English, 5 years of French, 3 years of Spanish, and, of course, being fluent in German, Luci is quite the scholar. Because of all the reading and writing, her hardest class is English. Luci says she can hear a huge difference between British English

and Southern English. This is not Luci’s first time to the United States. She visited Destin, Florida two years ago. Surprisingly, Luci says that the Florida beaches are prettier than where she travels in Italy because the sand is whiter, the beaches are cleaner, and less populated.

Luci has thoroughly enjoyed the southern hospitality but cannot wait to see her friends back at home.

Below, Luci enjoys her time spent in Oxford with her host family and Prep friends.

Around Town New restaurant keeping it Freshii

Preston Dubberly anD tori newsome After the 1:30 dismissal for Prep Preview, we, along with Jordan Headley, tried out one of Flowood’s newest restaurants, Freshii. Today, there are Freshii locations in over seventy-five cities and fifteen countries worldwide. Their motto is “Eat. Energize.” Matthew Corrin, the founder of Freshii, created this on the go restaurant to provide fresh and nutritious meal choices that energize people and help them make better food choices allowing customers to live a longer and happier life. This particular restaurant is definitely for people who have random health kicks. In 2013, Freshii was rewarded to be the Top Franchise of the Year in Canada. Corrin was also featured in the famous television show “Undercover

by

Boss” as the youngest CEO in the show’s history.

Freshii is open seven days a week from eight in the morning to nine at night which means all meals are served. Their menu ranges from salads and wraps to smoothies and frozen yogurt. One cool thing about the menu is that you can customize your meal instead of ordering off the menu. Another element different from most restaurants is that you can order a meal box. A meal box is a way to start a

healthy diet. You can pick it up or even have it delivered to you daily. Meal boxes contain three meals and two snacks. Jordan’s favorite thing about her meal was the frozen yogurt. “The frozen yogurt was different, but the toppings were the best part for sure.” Two of the things we decided on ordering was the cobb salad and the cobb wrap. The service there was very fast, so we got our meals pretty quickly. To our surprise, we were in and out within twenty minutes. Freshii is one of those restaurants that is a must-try even if you do not really like salads because there is something for everyone. Sophmore Jordan Headley is thrilled to be trying frozen yogurt at Freshii’s! Photo by Preston Dubberly.

The taco truck was actually at Prep last year for Spanish day. The owner is hoping that the new location in Fondren will bring in more business and succeed like many of the other new restaurants there. “There’s a lot of foot traf-

Many of the employees at the County Line location are also moving to the new Fondren location to train new employees. The new site of Green Ghost Tacos will be at the old location of Que Sera on North State Street.

The name Moe’s is an acronymn for “Musicians, Outlaws, and Entertainers,” which is seen in the resturant’s music geared artwork. Years ago, Moes was once in Mississippi, but it eventually closed down. To the surprises of most people, the owners have decided to bring the restaurant back to Jackson. Josh Snyder, resident by

of Columbia, South Carolina and owner of three Moe’s resturants, will be bringing this resturant back to town. Everyone is welcome at Moe’s, and that’s why when you walk in the restaurant, you are guaranteed to hear their famous slogan, “Welcome to Moes!” It has a variety of foods on its menu and is best known for its famous burritos. You can order fast, and it has an amazing atmosphere. From kids to elders, Moe’s has something for everyone. Moe’s is located at Maywood Mart Shopping Center. Moes will open on October 13. There will also be opening locations in Madison, Ridgeland, and Flowood by next year (2017). The metro Jackson area will soon have many Moe’s restaurants.

Surin is a very good place to eat if you are looking for contemporary Thai food as opposed to traditional. Surin also features sushi on its menu and the sushi is another best seller. If you are in the mood for only sushi, you can get that, but if you only want Thai you can get Surin has a wide variety of items on the menu that range from fried rice to sushi, so there is really something for everyone. by

The Pad Thai noodle dish is looking delicious A few of the most popular dishes on the menu are the pad thai noodles, fried rice, coconut soup, and sushi. The pad thai noodles are served in a large bowl with a peanut sauce on the side. The actual dish includes noodles, vegetables, and your choice of shrimp or chicken. The fried rice is another consistent choice on the menu and is among the best sellers. The fried rice is available served with chicken, beef, or shrimp and is as a side with any entree. Fried rice is a good choice if you don’t like to branch out and try things that you have never had before. The coconut soup is an appetizer choice and can be ordered in a cup or a bowl. It is not something that is familiar to most Americans but the ones who have tried it love it. If you ever get the chance to go to Surin, it is not something that you would want to pass up. The sushi on the menu is just your traditional sushi rolls along with a few in house special sushi rolls. Sushi is a good option if you are looking for something small to go along with an entree or even an appetizer. With great service and even better food, Surin is a place you definitely want to try if you like Thai or Japanese.

Fusion

brittany WilkinSon If you are looking for a more lowkey eating experience, go to Fusion. It is located on Treetops Boulevard right off of Lakeland Drive. Fusion is a popular choice because they give you the option of Thai, Japanese, or both. First off, if you are in a rush, Fusion is probably not the best choice. The employees are friendly, but it takes some time for the food to come out. Upon arriving, the restaurant is pretty dark and your first impression may not be the best, but once you try the food, your opinion should change. The restaurant is roomy with lots of people at lunchtime. You do not normally see people you know because many Jackson Prep students do not know about it. When you sit down, they give you free spring roll appetizers that really add to the experience. Their pad thai, which are rice noodles with soy sauce and vegetables, is one of the best in the area. Fusion’s thai fried rice is one of the best fried rice in the area because it was perfectly cooked when I ate it. They offer a popular drink called Boba Tea that contains milk, flavored tea, and chewy tapioca pearls. In addition, they have a wide variety of sushi even though their most popular food is thai. Fusion also has a location in Madison for those who live in that area. As far as the price, it is pretty reasonable for the food that you get. They also give you fortune cookies at the end of your meal. by

The Spring Rolls are a great appetizer to get your meal started

Thai House

Gracie Mccraney Located off the Frontage Road, the Thai House is a casual, convenient restaurant that features an extensive lunch buffet, a dine-in option, along with take out. The Thai House definitely has the authentic Thailand feel from the elaborate decorations to the cultural music. They even have tables with cushions as chairs to sit on. The staff at the Thai House is family-run and is always friendly. The service is very good by

Thai Tasty ann clardy byrd Come to Thai Tasty if you are looking for a classic Thai cuisine. They have a variety of options that range from thai chow mein to chicken fried rice. If you are a first timer then you may be hesitant, but don’t let the smells scare you. Thai food is different from what you might be use to, but once you try it you can’t go back. I have two favorite dishes there and it’s always tough to choose which one to get. The thai chow mein is a noodle dish with chicken and sauteed vegetables with a spicy soy sauce mixed in. Their fried rice dish is different from your typical fried rice, but that is what makes it better than the rest. When ordering at Thai by

The Fried Rice steaming hot Tasty you pick your meal then the level of spice you would like. It goes from mild all the way to Thai hot, which I would not recommend unless you are an expert with spicy food. There is never a wait during dinner time, but the case could be different for lunch. They have a wide range of appetizers including your traditional edamame, spring rolls, tofu tod, and crab rangoon. The service is very quick and the servers are always friendly. Thai Tasty has a clean environment and is well kept. Each dish is extremely flavorful and authentic. The prices are reasonable and it is definitely one of the cheaper Thai places in town. It is located next to Daylight Donuts and The Wing King in the Colonial Mart Shopping Center. I recently started going to Thai Tasty and now it is one of my favorite places to eat at. I recommend this to all Thai lovers, even if you have not yet tried Thai food, now is your chance.

too. I have been going to the Thai House my entire life, and continue to eat there once a week. My favorite appetizer is the moo satay, which is fried bread with pork, served with cucumbers and a peanut dipping sauce. Their spring rolls, gyoza, and fried wontons are also very good. One of my all-time favorite dishes is the original chicken fried rice. They also have a combination fried rice with steak, chicken, and shrimp which is delicious. Some of the other popular dishes are chicken satay and green curry. The chicken satay is similar to chicken on a stick, and comes with delicious peanut sauce. The green curry is a soup poured over steamed rice which is very good, but sometimes is too spicy if you don’t order it mild. They also have sweet and sour chicken, phat thai (fried rice, bean sprouts, meat, and peanuts). They also have dessert options such as sweet rice and banana and fried sweet potato, along with fortune cookies and oranges. The Thai House grows their own pepper and herbs outside of the restaurant that they incorporate into a variety of their dishes. The Thai House is not too expensive. If you are looking for delicious, authentic Thai food, then The Spring Rolls dipped into a Sweet and Sour sauce Thai House is the place to go.

Last Chance U brings a piece of Mississippi to Netflix by Duncan Jones, steven Wyatt, anD steWart Mccullough One of the new additions to Netflix’s vast library of documentaries, movies, TVshows, and more is Last Chance U, a compelling sports documentary chronicling East Mississippi Community College’s football team. EMCC is a small community college situated in Scooba, Mississippi, a meager town in Kemper County with a population of 732. Uncensored and unscripted, this documentary records all of the action from practice to games and unlimited insight into the lives of athletes, coaches, and administrative advisors. Led by head coach Buddy Stephens, a raw and often vulgar leader motivating his players with intense practices and speeches, EMCC has won the 2011, 2013, and 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships. Netflix follows East Mississippi’s 2015 football season, revealing intense sequences of emotional football preparation and drama throughout the season. The director, Greg Whiteley, has filmed other documen-

taries as his primary genre, including Mitt, an inside look at Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign and family throughout his tenure as Republican National Nominee during the 2012 presidential election.

The intriguing parts of Last Chance U pertain to the players and the atmosphere surrounding them. Many phenomenal athletes have ended up at East Mississippi because of grades or a lack of maturity that prohibited them from playing at Division 1 universities. Players like Bo Wallace, who had an issue with his attitude, went to East Missis-

sippi after he quit the team at Arkansas State following the 2010 season. After his stay at East Mississippi, he went on to become a starting SEC quarterback for Ole Miss, leading the team to a 9-4 season which included a New Year’s Six Bowl. Another player to go through the program at East Mississippi and become a well known name in football is Chad Kelly, the current quarterback at Ole Miss. Chad Kelly, like Bo, had a problem with his attitude and was released from Clemson in 2013. The magic behind these players’ transformations is when they come to secluded Scooba, Mississippi, the realization that rock bottom is one step below offers extra motivation to reform their actions and work ethic on the field and in the classroom in order to reach the next level. D.J. Law, a running back from Haines City High School in Florida, signed with East Mississippi in 2014 after becoming ineligible to play for Ole Miss due to academic issues. Missing out on a chance to play Division-1 football, some may think he would change his perception of school and academic importance, but his persistence

of skipping class and failing to complete assignments led to him staying at East Mississippi throughout the following summer. Of the several tough jobs on the East Mississippi campus, the most demanding may be the job of academic counselor Brittany Wagner. Wagner deals with kids failing classes, not turning in assignments, and even skipping classes on a daily basis. There might always be a athlete in the academic counseling office, but who that athlete may be usually does not change. Athletes like Ronald Ollie, John Franklin III, D.J. Law, and Jay Johnson are a few of the frequent visitors to the counseling office. D.J. Law is one player that couldn’t seem to be able to dodge Ms. Wagner. In most episodes she is chasing D.J. around to make him go to class or to get him to finish an assignment. Ms. Wagner may have to be the protagonist in each episode and she may have to push some of the players more than she would like to, but her ambitious tactics have made most of the players at least respect her. A couple of the players like Ms.

Wagner so much that they even call her “Mom.” Last Chance U compels each viewer with its individuality and aggressiveness. Driven by important characters such as Buddy Stephens and players like Ronald Ollie and DJ Law, the documentary reveals personal stories and paths coming together on the football field and in the classroom. Ronald, an extremely talented lineman with family problems, arrived at EMCC in order to hopefully take a path different from his parents. With leadership from the coaches, Ronald Ollie becomes a dynamic player with high hopes of signing with a Division-1 university. Director Greg Whiteley’s inclusion of everyday activities such as schoolwork combined with practice and games unveil the complicated and stressful lives of college football players. Also, Last Chance U showcases community college sports in an entirely new and unfamiliar perspective most people are unaware of and interested in watching.

Escape Room makes a break in Jackson chathaM KenneDy Slip inside a life-sized puzzle where the only means of escape involves an expo marker and one’s brain. Underneath the Mississippi pine trees lies a former weather station that houses the up and coming JXN Escape Room. The concept of escape rooms has been a surging trend across the southeast. Players must decipher clues and solve numerous puzzles in sixty minutes to conquer the simulator. JXN has two simulator options, The Investigation and The Spaceship. The Investigation submerses 2-5 players in a dorm room where a girl was by

October 2016

recently murdered. The countdown is on to find out who the murderer is before he attacks again. The second room allows 2-8 players to take on the role of astronauts who have just awoken from hyper sleep to find that they are being drifted into a black hole. These rooms are full of twists and turns that will be sure to have one scratching his head. Investigation escape rate is 25% while the Spaceship has a slightly higher rate of 35%. One of the many amazing things these escape rooms offer is the opportunity for teams to work together. Jackson Prep senior Robert Wasson recently

visited JXN. He says, “I really enjoyed trying to solve the puzzles under the pressure of time. The group really worked together and everyone had a great time contributing to our escape. The best part was the when we were down to our last 5 minutes and we were freaking out looking for that last clue. I thought there was no way we would make it.” The creators behind these two rooms are Clint and Colieen Sistrunk. After playing in numerous escape rooms, the couple decided to create their own. They began working on this project in January, and they opened to the public

on Valentine’s Day with The Investigation. Not long after, The Spaceship opened. Clint is looking forward to the arrival of The Historian, which is set to arrive in October.

The new Magnificent Seven is a diamond in the rough Movie Review: Jacob Aron Director Antoine Fuqua, who directed movies like Training Day, Southpaw, The Equalizer, and Olympus Has Fallen, brings a fresh take on a classic story in his newest film, The Magnificent Seven. The movie was scheduled to release September 23, 2016, with the a star-studded cast including: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke. This new take is about a fictional frontier, the western town of Rose Creek that is under the control of Bartholomew Bogue, a ruthless industrialist who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. So with the town at their wits, they employ a group of seven outlaws for protection from the industrialist’s hired

thugs as the town gets ready for the final showdown. But the mercenaries soon learn that they are fighting for more than money. With a rotten tomato rating of 61 % and an audience score of 79 %, this movie is definitely a must see. + The movie is a remake of the original cult classic western that was originally produced in the 1960s, which itself was a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic, Seven Samurai. But not much has changed since the original 1960 version, besides the diversity in the cast of the Seven and that the villain is not a Mexican bandito. Also, in the 1960 production, the town was actually a poor Mexican village instead of a frontier mining town.

I recently watched this movie and thought that it was good. I thought this movie was a well directed and was well cast. It had a good mix of humor and action, and I especially thought the performance put on by the actors was very good and it did not feel like just another last man standing shoot’em up movie. I thought the character development throughout the movie was as good as it could possibly get, especially with trying to introduce and develop seven plus main characters in addition to supporting characters into the movies run time. Even the movie was more believable than I thought it would be because most westerns and action movies don't really obey the laws of physics. At least in this movie when in big fights characters did have to reload their weapons and recognize the poor accuracy of the townspeople by giving them shotguns instead

of rifles because the towns people are such bad shots. I liked this movie overall and would most likely buy a DVD/Blu-Ray when it was released. You should definitely give it a chance even if you aren’t into western/action movies, and if you are into western/ action movies or if you want to go just watch a good movie with some friends this movie is defi-

nitely one to see.

Damon returns as Bourne, but is it for better or worse? Movie Review: James Threadgill

After four years of waiting since The Bourne Legacy, Paul Greengrass has returned with Matt Damon in order to film Jason Bourne. The film was released on July 29, 2016, making $22.8 million that night. While fans liked Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy, they are very excited to have Damon back in the role of Bourne. Personally, I like Damon more because he was the original character, but I also feel like Renner has more of a calm demeanor than Damon. Damon, to compensate, has more of a serious demeanor,

12

one that gets things done. Only when his father is mentioned is that seriousness replaced by hesitation and curiosity, which almost costs him his life. The movie overall is great, but I expected a bit more of a back-

story about Bourne’s father, which in the movie is very little. This is a movie where they want fully expect you to have seen the other four Bourne movies, because they do not stop to give you a recap of them, they just go straight into it. As expected from a Bourne movie, there is plenty of action and drama in Jason Bourne. It ranges from gunfights in streets filled with rioters to fist fights on the tops of buildings, from avoiding the CIA to epic car chases. There are all sorts of questions, like what happened to Bourne’s father, and what is the CIA planning? In the end, it is definitely something to see, but I would recommend seeing the other movies, or at least reading about the plot, before seeing Jason Bourne.

Sully soars past expectations Movie Review : Russell Roberts The movie Sully hit theatres on September 9th, 2016. This movie is about Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) and the story of how he landed U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in New York City on January 15th, 2009 after a flock of birds took out the engines on

both sides of the plane. Sully did this and saved all 155 passengers on board. This was the first time ever that anyone has landed an aircraft on any water surface. The majority of people saw Sully as a hero, but some like the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) saw him as a man who made the

wrong decision. Captain Sully went through a tough mental state after the landing because the NTSB was trying to accuse him of almost killing 155 souls. The NTSB wanted to prove to the world that Sully had time to turn the plane around and make a safe landing at the airport that he took off from. Sully was flustered by this because the NTSB said they knew he could do it because of computer simulations with the correct parameters. These simulations were shown in court but Sully defied them by saying

they lack the effect of human error and the time it took to check all systems. So, instead of the simulated pilots turning back to the airport right after the birdstrike, they delayed it by 35 seconds. Then, they showed the simulations with a 35 second time period after the bird strike and the airliner did not make it back to the airport. Sully was let off and returned to his job while being known as a hero to the families of the 155 passengers. I liked the movie overall because of the suspense of Sullys fate but if you only like

alot of action, Sully is a movie that lacks an action effect.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child brings back memories Preston Dubberly & Book Review: Genevieve Hurst

they decide to take on this giant task of time travel to make a name for themselves opposed to living in the shadows of both of their fathers. Although it is very different from the original Harry Potter books, it is still very good. Even though some readers have some doubts about reading this book due to having more than one author and the format being different, it provides closure for the longtime Harry Potter lovers. It still has the treacherous aspect in some shape or form and an adventure to be fulfilled. There are plenty of plot twists just like the original books. It has a different feel from the books, whether this is because of the script format or the fact that it is not centered around Harry.

Apple innovates with iOS 10 release Payne bell Apple has recently announced and released the newest version of their mobile operating system, iOS 10. Apple’s iOS 10 introduced many new and exciting updates, building upon their previous version, iOS 9. Initially, Notifications, which are seen when first turning on an iPhone, has been given not only a new look, but users now have the ability to reply to text messages without even opening the Messages app. A very large addition with iOS 10 is the Home app. This new app allows users to control their home and their various appliances right from their iPhone or iPad. However, the appliance or device must be compatible with the “Apple HomeKit.” Most likely, the appliances already being used at home are not compatible at the moment. Major updates and changes were released to texting. Apple has introduced the ability to by

install games and apps to iMessage, allowing users to play games such as pool, Battleship, and poker with other people through text messages. Many different changes to text messaging itself were also introduced in the iOS 10 update. It is now possible for someone to reply to a text message in their own handwriting, instead of just a standard text. The handwriting is also animated in a way that looks like the message is being written on paper. Animations now appear that take over the entire screen when texting things such as, “Happy Birthday!” This fills the screen with many different colors of balloons. It is also possible to draw over videos and pictures, much like how Snapchat allows their users to draw over pictures and videos prior to sending. When sending a text, words can now be selected and replaced with an emoji, simplifying the text message. Siri is now compatible

with some apps in the App Store. For example, requesting an Uber or a Lyft, or sending money are now possible through Siri. Maps can now be used to make reservations at restaurants, allowing for much easier table booking. The Music app has also been given an overhaul, which includes a new feature that allows listeners to view and read along with the lyrics of the song they are currently listening to, a feature that Spotify has within their service as well. Many Prep students and faculty members have already updated to the new mobile operating system. However, a handful of students and faculty participated in the iOS 10 beta, which allowed participants to test new features in the months prior to the official release. Teacher Mr. Lain Hughes was a user of the iOS 10 beta since its release during the summer. He commented on the update, “I believe most of the innovations were helpful. My

favorite addition was the ability to do more things through the lock screen.” Tenth grader James Threadgill updated to iOS 10 upon launch, saying: “I can’t complain about it. My favorite addition would have to be the ability to play different games and such with people through Messages. My least favorite addition is probably having to press the home button to put in my passcode, but it’s not too big of a nuisance. I didn’t take part in the beta, but overall I’m enjoying the update.”

Is the iPhone 7 really worth the upgrade? Patrick PhilliPs This September Apple released the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. These two phones are now the 14th and 15th addition to the iPhone family. There are only two major cosmetic differences and size is not one of them. First, the camera has a new look to it, instead of raising the lens out of the phone Apple raised the casing of the phone instead of the lens. The other difference, which you probably have already heard of, is the removal of the headphone jack. Other new features include water resistance, a better camera, faster processor, a better home button, and more. For a Prep student the biggest downside of the phone by

14

is the absence of the headphone jack, personally I use my headphones multiple times a day. Without the input I will be forced to carry around a dongle adapter or even have to buy wireless headphones. However, with the removal of the headphone jack also brings some positives along with it. The iPhone is now advertised as water resistant which simply means it is waterproof and can be completely submerged without damage to the phone. Now this does not mean that you can now go diving with your phone and take pictures underwater. It is intended to be a safety feature to prevent water damage on your new phone. To many Prep students this new feature could be

worth the upgrade. Every new iPhone usually brings something new bigger and better than the last phone however this time I feel Apple missed the target. There is no new feature that sticks out from the rest and makes me want to buy the new phone for now I will stick with my 6s and wait until something better comes out.

MADDEN 17 scores big with new features and improvements Game Review: Nevin Wells If you are a big fan of EA Sports, you would think the wait and hype for a game could not surpass for Madden 16, but that is false. When Madden 16 was released, the reality of the game was insane. It was as if nothing could have gotten better. The release of Madden 17 proved everything wrong. Madden 17 is a beautiful game, making many improvements and tweaks to make you feel as if you were at the game. EA Sports moved on from Jim Nantz and Phil Simms to the talent of Brandon Gauldin and Charles Davis as the primary commentators, and

this has become known as the best decision the developer has made with the entire series. Madden 17 also made various on-field additions. The new ball carrier animations and controls are fantastic. Based on the physical abilities of the player, the types of moves he can make are restricted. With Madden 16, it was as if the defense would never win, this is not the case for Madden 17. The defense is very much equal with the offense. Madden 17 made the “aggressive catch, which was almost unstoppable, fair. Madden 17 added a new move of being able to strip the ball from behind, making it eas-

ier to produce turnovers. Overall, the defense is smarter in many instances. The zone coverages are more true to integrity of the defensive schemes, and players seem to plug up the gaps better on stopping the run. It is finally possible to block a field goal or a punt, which can be a turning factor in a close game. The game has also made visual and sound effect improvements. EA Sports took a new approachment into making more realistic sounds in the game. Tackles sound different depending on the contact, making it seem as almost you were watching a real game. Although there are many positive aspects of the game, there are still a handful of negative aspects. Offensive lineman are still immune to injuries, and although injuries

are more common in this years game, there are still not enough injuries in a game compared to reality. Through my first five games I played, I only had one total injury. Another major negative effect the game has is that running out of bounds does not always stop the clock, which could also be an import-

ant factor in winning a game. Connecting the franchise and customization are still lacking as well. Overall, Madden 17 scores as the best ever. It is a truly beautiful game, it draws your attitude and emotion as if you were playing the game. The players as a whole look realistic, the graphics are fantastic.

Rob Gronkowski looks to be a power-house in Madden 17.

FIFA 17 surpasses standards with new career mode Game Review: Tanner McCraney FIFA 17 is expected to be one of the best selling video games of 2017 and for good reason. Throughout the past years, EA Sports has continuously improved everything from the gameplay to the graphics to the soundtrack. First of all, career mode has been reinvented. On this game, you now take the field as the character Alex Hunter, a young aspiring player that has been given his first chance at playing time. The objective is to play and attempt to improve your player and make him one of the

October 2016

best in the game. This feature is very similar to EA sports my player, which allows you to create a player, partake in in-

terviews and social media, and follow his life and emotions on and off the field. When it comes to the FIFA Ultimate team, where you act as a manger and buy and sell

players in order to create a team of your dreams to compete in games and tournaments, two major additions have occurred. A new mode has been added called the squad builder challenges in FIFA Ultimate Team. In this game mode, you must make a team by using players based on certain requirement in order to redeem awards such as player packs, coins, and club consumables. Next, there is the FUT Champions, which is a new mode where you can compete in elite tournament for huge coin rewards. This will make it easier to buy some of the best players in the game. When it comes to improvements in the actual gameplay, the creators of FIFA increased the speed of the game. This years game seems to be focused

on possession on the ball. You can now string a series of passes together before the other team can react. With combined boost of the passing and the runs that the players make this FIFA will be much more tactical. Another thing is that set pieces have been reinvented. From corners to freekicks there is a new technique. The player now has more control of where the ball will land. This will

make headers much more effective. After playing the game a couple times with fellow Fifa prodigy’s, Landon Wilbanks and Russell Roberts, I have concluded that this game is going to be fun and exciting. I suggest getting the game to anyone who has liked the FIFA games in the past. Also, for those interested in playing me, add me @tannermcc9 on Xbox One.

Prep football continues dominance

brendon McLeod Jackson Prep football has been nothing short of dominating so far this season. The Patriots are off to a great start with a record 7-0. This years team consists of a very well rounded roster, with key players from each grade level. Seniors Tate Fowler, Barrett Bufkin, Jacob Crawley, and Chris Puckett were named to the Pre-season MAIS All Gridiron team. With four seniors selected, Prep had the most players of all the teams represented. This was a huge honor because few players from the MAIS were selected to be apart of this elite group. The defense this year is anchored by Senior middle linebacker JoJo Pound who leads the team with 54 tackles this season. Offensively, a super talented backfield consists of Chance Lovertich, Jacob Crawley, and Jerrion Ealy. The patriots have been consistent this year beating all opponents with a substancial margin. On Friday, August 19th, the Jackson Prep opened up season against the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets. This game was the most physical game of the year so far. It was a hard nosed, smash mouth football game. The depth of the Patriots outlasted the Yellow Jackets in the second half. Prep eventually began to pull away in the second half finishing with a 41-28 victory. Junior quarterback Chance Lovertich completed 7/10 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown pass. Sophomore stud Jerrion Ealy began his sophomore season rushing 15 times for 84 yards and 4 touchdowns. Ealy has offers from Mississippi State and Ole Miss to play college football. Next, the Patriots played the Washington School Generals. Prep jumped on top early and dominated the game as a whole. The defense shut out the

his role nicely as they each scored a rushing touchdown. The game against Washington had an underlying significance. This game marked Coach Ricky Black’s 347th win as a head coach which established him as the 2nd most winningest coach in Mississippi High School history. Prep traveled south for their first road game against Natchez Cathedral School on September 2nd. The game went by quickly as Prep jumped up 41-0 by halftime. In his first game back from injury, Jacob Crawley ran for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns. Quarterback Chance Lovertich tallied 2 touchdowns as well. The game ended as a 42-7 triumph over Natchez Cathedral. The team kept their momentum going as they plowed through Pillow Academy 48-7. Running back Jerrion Ealy was the player of the game. Ealy totaled four touchdowns and 239 yards. With this

team faced off against Madison-Ridgeland Academy. This highly anticipated showdown picked to be the Blitz 16 Game of the Week. At the end of the first half, Prep led Mra 14-7 in a close fought game. In the second half, it was a different story. Senior Jacob Crawley finished the night with 181 rushing yards and 3 total touchdowns. In the 3rd quarter, Crawley alone had 2 of his 3 scores. Crawley was awarded the Blitz 16 Player of the Week for this incredible performance. In the end, Prep prevailed over MRA with a final score of 34-7, with the defense shutting out MRA in the second half. This game solidified Prep as one of the top teams in the state. Then the team traveled to Meridian to face Lamar. The team got off to a great start in the first quarter as Blitz 16 Player of the Week Jacob Crawley rushed for two touchdowns. The score at halftime was 357, and Prep went on to add

one more touchdown to defeat Lamar 42-7. Once again, Jacob Crawley ran for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sophomore wideout Peyton Greenwood also scored on two touchdown catches from Chance Lovertich. With this win, Prep tied the school record for most consecutive wins with 27. This past Friday, Prep took on rival school Jackson Academy. The firast quarter was a back-and-forth quarter until Tate Fowler shifted the momentum when he intercepted Jackson Academy quarterback Noah Thigpen. On the next play, Jerrion Ealy had a 25 yard rush to give Prep a 7-0 lead. Prep rode the momentum into the second quarter when Chance Lovertich threw a perfect pass to Jerrion Ealy to give Prep a 14-0 lead. Midway through the second quarter, the Patriots defense forced a punt. Jerrion Ealy fielded a punt, ran right, cut back left and made eight Raiders miss on his way to a 79 yard touchdown. On the next possession, Tate Fowler did his best to

match Ealy as he took a punt back 67 yards for a touchdown. Jerrion Ealy led the team rushing yards and receiving yards. Senior defensive backs Tate Fowler and Jake Newsome both had an interception. With this win Prep broke the school record for most consecutive wins with 28. The Patriots will look to continue the streak on Friday, October 7th against Parklane Academy. As the season progresses, expect no drop off in performance or result from the Patriots. Prep has won the title the past 4 seasons, so there is certainly a target on the back of the Patriots. Remaining Season Games: October 7-Parklane Academy October 14-Presbyterian Christian School October 21-Magnolia Heights October 28-East Rankin Academy

Girls’ soccer team looks to defend title Henley JoHnson Will FletcHer This year’s girls soccer teams are coached by head coach Jon Marcus Duncan and assistant coach Jay Lyles. There are twenty-two players on the girls varsity team and twenty-one players on the girls junior varsity team. The team practices multiple times a week, along with a couple of games a week. They are working hard to get to the championship this year to achieve back to back championship seasons. Coach Duncan describes this year’s season by saying, “It’s been an up and down season so far. We had a huge win over Jackson Academy on September 14th. I’m excited about the remainder of the season and watching this team become by

better every week.” The difference in this year’s season and last year’s season for the varsity team has been described by Mary Price Montagnet as, “Very different because we have had a lot

of running practices and very many vigorous summer practices. This year’s seniors, Addison Hughes, Ann Leighton Malouf, Shelby Wilson, Selby Jennings, London Miskelly, and Anne Rivers Mounger are very encouraging and pushing us to do our best.” The practice season started last spring with multiple practices a week. The official soccer tryouts weren’t until late July, but all of the practices leading up to tryouts influenced the tryouts as well. The official soccer season didn’t begin until early August and ends in October. The final championship date is October 10th. Both girls teams have many new players including: Callie McKinney, Olivia Sasser, Cassidy ZumMallen, and Campbell

the school provided tents and snacks for the Prep swimmers between events to rehydrate and rest up before they had to swim again. Prep had seventy-one participants in the swim meet which definitely contributed to the victory. of 54.61 seconds during the 2015 season. This year, he set a new state record with a time of 51.29 seconds. “In most programs,” said Heath, “there would be a lot of pressure, but the great thing about Prep is that Dr. Nealey and Ms. Wiandt make sure that everyone has fun, while maintaining the school’s history of swimming excellence.” A trend at the swim meet was writing creative things on your back to cast fear into competitors. Common phrases were, “eat my bubbles” and “if you’re reading this, you are last.” This year, Prep won eight events ending with a total of 291.5 points. Prep’s first winning event was the boys 7-9 200 yard free relay. This relay team consisted of Bennett Carter (7th), Ashton William Heath (9th), Cade Engels (9th), and Mason Nichols (8th). Sports Volleyball season comes to a strong close Maclain Kennedy Jackson Prep volleyball has hit it off to a great season. Practicing three days a week in June, and five days a week in July, these girls have been working hard all summer in preparation for the school year. by

Ten members make up the varsity team, nineteen form the JV team, and fourteen are on the 6th and 7th grade team. Coach Leah Thompson, the head coach of all three teams, has been focused on these players and their improvement. Coach Leah has been playing volleyball for ten years and coaching for eight years. She has been able to help the girls immensely with their skills and working as a team. Coach Leah said, “This season, I am hoping to build a solid foundation to continue growing the program, and I’m hoping to help more girls fall in love with the sport.” Some of the players on the team continue to grow through a club league outside of school. Kacie Van Pelt, a current senior, plays the position of libero. She has been playing volleyball for seven years, and

her hopes for the team are none other than to have a winning season. The varsity team has won four games this year. They have already competed in one tournament this season. Varsity came out with a victory in their last game against Hillcrest on Tuesday, September 27. The girls swiftly defeated their opponent after only four sets. Although volleyball has only been at Prep for five years, the sport is increasing in popularity at Jackson Prep. Volleyball is a great chance to get to know others and work as a team with those who you attend school with. For people interested in playing, 10th grader Georgia Perkins says, “Come play. It’s so fun and whatever your doubts are about joining, you’ll absolutely have the opportunity to learn the game and get better.”

The Jackson Prep volleyball team will compete in their final season tournament on October 5 at Belhaven University. The team will be playing Heritage Academy at 11:00am.

Softball hits to the championship Madeline claire HugHes This year’s softball season, which started in early August, has been very successful with Prep having a winning record of 24-2 heading into the playoffs that start on September 24th. Coach Caton, who is the softball team’s head coach, has been coaching at Prep for thirteen years and has brought in a new assistant coach this year, Coach Meredith Owen, a former softball player at Prep. Coach Caton has played and coached softball for a very long time. She loves to watch these girls achieve their goals, and her favorite thing is to watch the girls grow from seventh grade to twelfth. Coach Caton said this about the season, “So far it has been a really great season full of some awesome accomplishments”. The softball team is made up of thirteen girls. No by

seniors are on the softball team this year, so this gives everyone a chance to step up and be a leader. Dakota Jones, Bailey Winscott, and Haley Hanson are the juniors on the team. A few girls to watch are eighth grader Olivia Sasser, and ninth grader Carly Lewis. They are starters along with a handful of sophomores. “Both Drea Morgan and Breley Boykin have carried the load pitching,” says Coach Caton. The softball team has a solid starting lineup this year. These are the regular starters: Bailey Winscott, Drea Morgan, Haley Hanson, Carly Lewis, Breley Boykin, McKinley Weeks, Dakota Jones, Olivia Sasser, Shea Lumpkin. Two pitchers have combined for seventeen shutouts and seven out of the nine girls that are starting have hit homeruns this year. Eighth grader Sydney

Rey said, “It has been a great year. I love the girls on the team and the atmosphere.” “We have really awesome chemistry on this team,” says Coach Caton. She thinks that they have a great chance to

win the championship if they can stay focused and play their game. The softball team competed on Monday, September 26 at Shiloh Park in Brandon Mississippi against Parklane.

They won twelve to three becoming AAAA Division 1 State Champions. They will advance to Overall State championship which is on Saturday October 8.

Sports Cross Country team running into the season

Tori Newsome The many members of the Prep Cross Country team began an exciting and competitive season. They had their first meet on August 29th, but they practiced twice a week throughout the summer. The head coach for both the girls and the boys team is Coach Taylor Dixon and the assistant is Coach Meredith Lang. Coach Dixon and Coach Lang ran cross country during college together at Mississippi College. Coach Dixon said, “My favorite part about coaching cross country is getting to work with Coach Meredith.” The Cross Country team has most of their meets on Monday afternoons at Choctaw Trails. The team practices Monday through Thursday after school and Friday mornings at around 6:00 a.m. during the season. The girls’ cross country team has about 35 members, and the boys’ cross country by

team has about 40 members on the team. This season, out of roughly 20 teams, the girls have placed fourth and the boys have placed eighth. The boys team has several young, developing runners. The girls have a very good team who they hope will place in the top two at the state meet. The cross country team has different types of workouts everyday. The team gets split up into the A and B team, and each team gets a different workout everyday. The teams warm up, stretch, and then do their workouts. The workouts are anything from a track workout to a long distance workout. The track workouts include shorter distance running and a core workout. The team is sent out to run for a certain amount of time for their long distance workouts. The workouts are created by Coach Dixon and Coach Lang based on their experience at MC and when the

meets are. “The biggest thing is being fresh for meets and then having time to peak our weaknesses for state,” said Coach Dixon. This year there is a new cross country trail. Mr. Carter Smith, whose daughter Havens is in seventh grade, cleared the cross country trail. The cross country trail also has a slack line, which is made up of two super strong lines that stretch across a ditch so the runners can get to the lake. Sophomore Maclain Kennedy said, “The new cross country trail has been such a blessing. It’s so much fun to run the trail with these girls and change up the normal route. I love that it’s so much cooler in the trail, and the new slack line is so fun.” The cross country team has had a great start to their season. They are planning on working hard this season to make improvements where they can be made.

United States shines at Rio De Janeiro Olympics sTewarT mccullough The first Olympic Games, of which there is recorded, were held in 776 B.C., and consisted of one event, a foot race that was 200 yards long. After almost 2,800 years, there are more than 300 events where 10,000 athletes can compete. The Games of the 31st Olympiad began on August 5th and lasted until August 21st in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. It was announced in September of 2006 that Rio would receive the bid to become the host of the 2016 Olympics. Swimming, Gymnastics and Track & Field stood out as the most viewed events but no other event had more of a historical impact than the re-admittance of golf into the Olympics. Golf has not been played since the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri. One of the sole problems related to golf being by

October 2016

an olympic sport is the lack of luxurious professional golf courses in some third-world countries. Nelson Ramsey, an 11th grader at Prep, explains that, “Golf is one of the oldest sports in the world and people all over the world play it, so I am glad that the Olympic committee decided to add it back to the games.” One player in particular from the Magnolia State stood out as a fierce competitor in Rio was Tori Bowie, an olympic sprinter. She represented her home state by bringing home a gold, silver and bronze medal while finishing fourth in multiple races. Hunter Patterson feels that “Tori Bowie really represented the state well and made everyone proud. It is not very often that Mississippians compete on an international level and she represented us well.”

Bowie was born in Sand Hill, Mississippi, a small unincorporated community of Rankin County and attended Pisgah High School. She set state records and won a total of 8 state championships during her tenure at Pisgah. Her outstanding performance at Pisgah paid dividends in that she would receive a scholarship to run for The University of Southern Mississippi. After winning two National Championships, she began to compete professionally during the 2014 World Championships. The United States led the medal count once again during the Rio Olympics. The United States won 38 bronze medals, 37 silver, 46 gold medals with a total of 121 medals. This number is over 50 more medals than the second place contender in medal count being China with 70 medals.

Young Athletes to Watch: Sam McMullan and Cam Brent by

Alex Gibbs

Sam McMullan:

If you have watched the 6th and 7th grade football team play this season, you have likely seen number 22 breaking away for a long touchdown run. This young football star’s name is Sam McMullan. When one first sees him, he or she would most likely guess he is a freshman or sophomore as he stands 5’8” 140 lbs. In addition to his towering size, he has sub-5 second 40 yard dash speed. This combination of size and speed make it incredibly difficult for any 7th grader to tackle him. In the first three games and a Red vs. White intrasquad scrimmage, he ran for seven touchdowns, the majority being in excess of 50 yards, with the team going undefeated in these games. In addition to playing

running back, he also plays linebacker on defense. 6th and 7th grade football assistant coach Derek Williford said that on the first day of practice they knew when they saw him run that he was going to be the running back and that he had the potential to be really good. Coach Walker, the head coach of the team, will jokingly (although it is close to being true) say the gameplan for his team is “Sam McMullan right, then Sam McMullan left.” Unfortunately for Sam, he

broke a bone in his foot in the team’s Red vs. White scrimmage on September 8 and will miss the remainder of the season. However, he looks to have a very bright future in the years to come on the Junior High and Varsity football teams. He aims to help continue Jackson Prep’s outstanding tradition of good running backs.

Cam Brent:

Occasionally, an 8th grader who has the ability to contribute or one who has an eligibility issue because of being held back plays up on the Junior High basketball team which primarily is composed of 9th graders. However, it is almost unheard of for a 7th grader to be on the team. Such is the case this year for 7th grader Cam Brent. He will be one of the smallest play-

ers on the court in his games this year, but for what he lacks in size, he makes up for in skill. Cam, whose father, Mr. Wayne Brent, is the head basketball coach at Jackson State, came to Jackson Prep last year as a 6th grader and played on the 6th grade basketball team. Many students around campus agree that Cam bears a striking resemblance to New York Knicks point guard and 20102011 NBA MVP Derrick Rose. With Cam’s ability to dribble and shoot, those comparisons can translate to the court as well (Although, let’s hope Cam doesn’t suffer the same repetitive injuries that Rose has). When his 7th grade classmates are asked about his ability, many of their eyes get big and they say something along the lines of how he is amazing and how his dribbling can “break your ankles.” Even when

talking to older kids in the high school, they are incredibly impressed with his basketball ability and many will admit that he is better than they are. Coach Moore and Coach Mitchell have high hopes for him this year and over the next few years in the basketball program, and many around campus look forward to seeing him play.

Junior High Football looks toward matchup with JA Alex Gibbs Often in football, a team has a bad start to a season and some people rush to say they are no good, but, as the season develops, the team shows it was better than that first game and keeps improving. Such is the case for this year’s Jackson Prep Junior High football team. On August 18th, the team opened the season with a rough 10-0 loss to MRA in which the team only gained 12 net yards of offense, but the team has responded with substantial improvement, having won their last 4 games against Lamar 40-7 on September 1, Oak Forest 34-16 on September 8, Parklane 13-8 on September 15, and East Rankin 35-0 on September 22. Head Coach of the Junior High team is John Haberman, who is in the midst of his second year of coaching the team. He said that his team “has improved significantly” but that there is still a lot of room for by

20

more improvement. On offense, Reed Kellum has been an all around force as he has touchdowns on the ground as well as receiving. The workhorse running the football so far has been Javon Magee, who has run for 4 touchdowns. Quarterback Bennett Johnston has proven to be an accurate passer over the last few games, and Caleb Gay is the leader on the offensive line. On the defensive side of the football, JC Polk, Seth Bagwell, and Holmes Maley have been strong tacklers as well as Caleb Gay and John Miller. For the most part, the defense has been the strong point of this team this year. The team seeks to win the AAAA Southeast district title again this season with a district game vs. PCS remaining and looks forward to the big end of the season matchup against Jackson Academy on October 13.

College football, you’ve been missed Hays Dubberly Every college football fan was pumped when the start of a new season occurred on September 1st. On this Thursday night, 9th ranked Tennessee Volunteers faced the Appalachian State Mountaineers in what most thought would be a blowout for Tennessee. Little did they know, Appalachian State forced overtime and could have won the game if they would have recovered a Tennessee fumble. On the first weekend of college football, there were many great games. While most Power 5 teams play “cupcakes” as opponents, there were some great upsets. Houston beat Oklahoma; South Alabama beat Mississippi State; Wisconsin beat LSU; Texas beat Notre Dame. These teams that won were not given much a chance by analysts and the media to win. Clemson, who was in the College Football Playoff last year, survived the scare that Auburn gave them. The second weekend did not have as many exciting games other than the Arkansas Razorbacks vs. TCU Horned Frogs and the Tennessee Volunteers vs Virginia Tech in a neutral site game in Bristol, Tennessee. Arkansas took TCU into overtime and won on a game winning rushing touchdown by their quarterback. The Tennessee vs. Virgina Tech broke the attendence record for a football game with over 140,000 fans. Tennessee struggled at first but took control of the game in the second half. The third weekend had the top 3 ranked teams on the road against ranked opponents. Top ranked Alabama got their revenge against Ole Miss in an exciting football game that resulted in a 48-43 victory for the Tide. 2nd ranked Florida State got annihilated by Louisville 63-20. Ohio State went into by

October 2016

Norman to face the Oklahoma Sooners but handed the Sooners a convincing 45-24 loss. The fourth weekend was eventful with the loss of Michigan State and the firing of LSU’s coach, Les Miles. After last season, many thought that Les Miles would be fired, but that changed when Jimbo Fisher, who is Florida State’s head coach, turned down the job. After losing to Auburn, Les Miles was terminated. The Michigan Sate vs. Wisconsin game was a 30-6 beatdown for Wisconsin. 14th ranked Tennessee was able to comeback and win against 19th ranked Florida for the first time in 11 years. The fifth weekend premiered three games between top 10 teams. Louisville vs Clesmon ended in a 42-36 victory for the Clesmon Tigers. Lamar Jackson still looks to be the Heisman front runner after another fantastic performance. Michigan defeated the Wisconsin Badgers 14-7. Washington destroyed Stanford with a score of 44-6. All these matchups could determine whether or not a team makes the College Foot-

ball Playoff. The Mississippi State Bulldogs started the season against South Alabama at home in a game that was considered a guaranteed victory. Things seemed to be going well at halftime when the Bulldogs were up 17-0 at halftime. Before too long, Mississippi State was in a dogfight with the Jaguars. South Alabama took a 21-20 late in the fourth quarter and ended up winning the game. The Bulldogs rebounded with a 27-14 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks but took a 23-20 loss against LSU. Mississippi State then traveled to Foxborough, Massachusetts and defeated Massachusetts 47-35. Nick Fitzgerald and Damian Williams have both played quality snaps for Bulldogs, and each of the players has done good and bad things for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State does not have consistency at the quarterback position, which has caused the struggles for the team. The Ole Miss Rebels faced 4th ranked Florida State and blew a 22-3 lead losing 45-34 in

a “neutral” site game in Orlando, Florida. The Rebels faced Wofford and won 38-13 without much of a challenge. As mentioned earlier, the Alabama Crimson Tide came to town looking for revenge from the last two years. Ole Miss jumped out to 24-3 lead but blew another 21 point lead. Alabama rolled from then on and held off a late push from the Rebels with a 4843 victory. Ole Miss welcomed the Georgia Bulldogs looking to make a statement and did just that with a 45-14 victory. Ole Miss offense has been so prolific that it scores too fast and does not give the defense enough of a break. It seems that the Rebels are either scoring a touchdown or going three and out. This has lead to the high scoring games and blown leads. Ole Miss defeated the Memphis Tigers 4121, which gives the Rebels a record of 3-2. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson is the Heisman front runner by the media and all college football fans. He led his team to a 63-20 victory over 2nd ranked Florida State by scoring 4 touchdowns on the

ground and 1 through the air. He has 25 touchdowns in just four games. Some people cannot even accomplish this in one season. Historically the SEC has been the most dominant conference, but the Big Ten has looked like the best conference so far. They have three teams ranked in the top 10, and Michigan State was ranked 8th before losing to a now top 10 ranked Wisconsin. Wisconsin beat highly ranked LSU and kept star running back Leonard Fournette in check. The SEC has not had a victory over an out of conference powerhouse team. The Big Ten may not have the depth that the SEC has, but their top 4 teams could match up with the SEC’s top 4 teams. Prediction for College Football Playoff 1. Alabama 2. Ohio State 3. Clesmon 4. NFL season kicks off BY: Ellis Abdo AFC Standings AFC North: Ravens 3-0 Steelers 2-1 Bengals 1-2 Browns 0-3 AFC South: Texans 2-1 Colts 1-2 Titans 1-2 Jaguars 0-3 AFC East: Patriots 3-0 Jets 1-2 Bills 1-2 Dolphins 1-2 AFC West: Broncos 3-0 Chiefs 2-1 Raiders 2-1 Chargers 1-2

Carson Wentz (pictured above) looks down the field for an open receiver.

The 2016 NFL season has had some close and thrilling games. Week one began with the Broncos, Raiders, Giants, and Bengals all winning by one point. This was an NFL record for the most teams to win by one point in the season opener. Week two was much of the same as four teams won by three points or less. Week three featured several upsets including the Buffalo Bills blowing out the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings defeating the Carolina Panthers. The defending Super Bowl champions, the Denver Broncos, have been very impressive so far and look like they can win another championship. The strength of this Broncos team is their stingy defense. Von Miller, Aqib Talib, and Demarcus Ware have all had strong starts to the season and anchor the defense. While the defense remains to be strong the offense came into the season with several questions. The main question was the quarterback position as Denver lost their top two quarterbacks from last year’s team. The Broncos named Trevor Siemian their starting quarterback for the season opener against the Carolina Panthers. While Siemian has made several mistakes, he has also made several key plays that have led the Broncos to a 3-0 start. If he can continue to make plays when needed and let his defense dominate the Broncos could repeat as Super Bowl champions.

One of the main stories so far this season is rookie quarterbacks. Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott have both had solid starts to their respective careers. Wentz has led the Eagles to a 3-0 start while throwing for 769 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. Wentz has been able to quickly adapt to the NFL and has made huge plays for his team. If Wentz can continue to play like this the Eagles will have their quarterback for years to come. Dak Prescott has thrown for 767 yards to begin his career. Although he Prescott has thrown for just one touchdown, he has taken care of the ball and given his team a chance to win games. The Cowboys are currently 2-1 with two of the games coming down to the wire. If Prescott can continue to take care of the football and start to make plays down the field, the Cowboys should be able to win plenty of games with Dak under center. The New England Patriots appear to be the NFL’s best team so far this season. Without all pro quarterback Tom Brady and star tight end Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots have started out the season 3-0. The season opener was a huge game for the Patriots as they faced off against the super bowl contender Arizona Cardinals. The Patriots showed that they are more than Brady and Gronkowski as Jimmy Garoppolo, Julian Edelman and LeGarrette Blount

all had big games in the win. In week 2, Garoppolo left the game early after he suffered a sprained AC Joint. Until Tom Brady returns in week 5, The Patriots will look to rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett to guide the team. If the Patriots’ supporting cast can continue their steady play until Tom Brady returns, they should be competing for a spot in the Super Bowl at the season’s end. There are many storylines to watch for as the season progresses. Key injuries are taking shape as J.J. Watt, Teddy Bridgewater, Adrian Peterson, Keenan Allen, Robert Griffin III, Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware, and Vontae Davis have all suffered major injuries that have made them miss time. The most interesting team to watch right now is the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have already lost Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Kalil to season ending injuries and have will be without superstar running back Adrian Peterson for at least three months. Despite all of these injuries the Vikings are off to a 3-0 start and will be an interesting team to watch as the season continues. Another storyline is players like Victor Cruz and Kelvin Benjamin returning from major injuries to make big plays for their teams. It will be interesting to see how each teams responds to adversity and de-

Sports Opinion

Dak Prescott: Underrated and underappreciated Sports Opinion: RJ Green Dak Prescott left Mississippi State as easily the best and most productive quarterback in the school’s history. He was adored by Mississippi State fans, players, coaches, as well as fans all across the country. Many would have scoffed at the idea of him not getting enough attention. It felt like the school went out of their way to shine a spotlight on Dak’s greatness. Whether it was bragging on social media about his on the field performance, highlighting his

strong character off the field, or the fans spelling out the word DAK with their phones on his Senior Day. Dak was dearly loved by everyone in the Mississippi State community, but was he underrated while playing there? Most people did not realize how important Dak was to the football team. His value to the team was underrated. Dak was able to carry the team to wins they would not have gotten without him. This is being

proven by Mississippi State’s team this season, and it will continue to be shown. They have lost to South Alabama, and they also struggled to beat UMASS. The offense was almost all on Dak’s shoulders, as he was heavily involved through the passing game. He broke all kinds of school and conference records while running Dan Mullen’s offense. Dak had some quality targets at the receiver position, but he never had a great offensive line or a great running back. State’s defense was also extremely inconsistent during his time there. Without Dak, Dan Mullen may not even still be at Mississippi State. He was the key to their

success during their historic 2014 season. He was always reliable in big games, and that was something fans loved about him. Dak is now showing why he should have gotten more respect nationally as he was one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Many people criticized his passing ability saying he could not play quarterback in the NFL. He is now proving that theory to be a comically false. He is among the early favorites for NFL Rookie of the Year, as he is leading the Dallas Cowboys in impressive fashion. He has looked very poised and calm even though he is shouldering the pressure of

“America’s Team”. He has lead them to a 2-1 record, and many people now think he could permanently take Tony Romo’s job. All NFL fans have been very impressed with Dak, and he is a big fan favorite across the league. Dak will forever be a legend at Mississippi State, and now he is working to get that same respect in the NFL community. His leadership, talent, and character are all great qualities he has that will help him have a very solid career in the NFL. All Bulldog fans now recognize what his value was to their team and their program.

Don’t fault Kevin Durant for wanting a ring Sports Opinion: Bennett O’Quinn This past summer, Kevin Durant made one of the most controversial NBA free agent signings of all time. Durant decided to sign with the Golden State Warriors, who hold the best regular season record of all time at 73-9. This is one of the most memorable actions by any athlete in recent history. Many NBA fans and followers did not agree with the decision he made and Durant is now viewed as the villain of the NBA. Durant is now undoubtedly one of the most hated players in the league. Kevin Durant was drafted with the 2nd pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics. Durant was one of the best collegiate players coming out of the University of Texas. He is viewed as one of the most gifted shooters and scorers for his size of all time.

He has won 4 scoring titles and most recently won the MVP award in the 2013-2014 season. The list goes on of the many accomplishments of Durant, and that shows how valuable he is to a team. Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunderentered the 2016 playoffs as the 3rd seed in the Western Conference. The Thunder easily beat the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs to go on to face the San Antonio Spurs. The Thunder edged out the Spurs in a very intense series that ended in 6 games, and the postseason looked promising for the Thunder. They advanced to play the Golden State Warriors, who broke the regular season record for most games won in a single season. The Thunder opened the series with a very

important road win, and the series looked to be in their favor. They had a commanding 3-1 series lead heading into game 5 of the series. The Warriors came back from the deficit winning the series and sending themselves to their second straight NBA Finals. This devastated the Thunder as they have been so close to contending for a title for the past 5 or 6 years. Durant, a free agent in the offseason, had a decision to make once the season was over, re-sign with the Thunder, or sign with another title contender for the 2016-2017 season. The 2016 offseason was swirling with rumors and news about Durant’s future decision. The day of his decision came, and to everyone’s surprise, Durant decided to join the Golden State Warriors. This announcement started a social media craze. Durant made his announcement in an article he wrote in the Players Tribune. This is arguably the biggest free agent announcement since LeBron James made “The Decision” to sign with the

Miami Heat. Many people now hate Kevin Durant for deciding to leave a title contender team for the best regular season team of all time. Many videos on the Internet showed Oklahoma City Thunder fans burning Durant jerseys, people showing up to his house in OKC, and stores in Oklahoma City putting his jersey on sale for five dollars. Many OKC fans called him disloyal, along with many other names, when he agreed to a deal with the Warriors. At the end of the day, Durant wants to win an NBA Championship.

He has been so close to getting to his goal with the Thunder, but they could never get over the hump to win a championship. Durant felt like he needed a fresh start with a new team that he believed he could accomplish his goals with. You should not hate Kevin Durant for making the decision that he felt was best for him to accomplish goals that he has had for his whole life. Durant recently opened up in an interview and said, “No one cares about what I want as a person.”

Opinion Where to appease appetite when craving Asian cuisine Paul’s Palate by Paul Andress Among the many things I enjoy in life, my life would be incomplete without food. Now for obvious reasons I need food in order to survive. However, I like to live my life with the approach Truett Cathy, who was the founder of Chick Fil-A, had. He said, “Food is essential to life, therefore make it good.” I agree wholeheartedly with this statement as I believe food should not just be eaten in the same way as a plant performs photosynthesis. Rather we have a choice to make. Well, other than nights I do not have money (love your cooking Mom). This is why I am writing this column. I am writing in order to bestow upon you my passion for good food and rec-

ommendations for restaurants that you must treat yourself to. Sometimes you may have to go outside of your comfort zone to expand your palate, but I promise you will be a more educated, well-equipped critic and consumer of food after following these recommendations. Now it would be wrong of me not to open the inaugural edition of my column without mentioning a place that is very near and dear to my heart. This place is Sakura Bana, and I will get to it later. I will follow this theme of my recommendations for oriental foods in this edition. Now there are many places that come to mind right off the bat when I think oriental (Chinese, Japanese, etc.). When I think

oriental I think: OEC, Sakura, Panda Express, and Sushi Village. I will break these places down as they are high on my list of spots you should go to when you are craving Asian food. be addressed when discussing Asian food is fried rice. Fried rice is one of the greatest creations known to mankind. So where do you go when you must have some? Well in times like this the places I like to hit up the following: OEC, Crazy Ninja, Ichiban, and Red Samurai. OEC is across the street, and it is a safe bet. I am a fan of the steak fried rice more so than their chicken. You really can not go wrong at Red Samurai as they have great chicken, steak, and shrimp fried rice. The soup that comes with the dinner is a little sketchy, but you do not have to order it with your meal. Continuing on the topic of

fried rice but veering into a discussion of another great place is Panda Express. I, however, am not a fan of Panda Express’s fried rice. The next time you go to Panda, you should try the chow mein. In my opinion, it is so much better than their fried rice, and I really like it with their orange chicken. My only suspicions is that they lace their orange chicken with some form of addictive drug because you can feel the effects of withdrawals when going more than a month without it. Now for those of you who prefer to go the sushi route, I have some recommendations for you too. like sushi then you better know about Sushi Village. Everytime I check out, I feel like I should apologize because I leave there feeling like I robbed the place. For $10.79, yes this includes tax but no drink, you get all you can eat sushi. Now this

place should not be a solo mission. You should go to Sushi Village with at least two other friends because the rule is: it is all you can eat except you pay for any sushi wasted. With this in mind, it takes a lot of self awareness when ordering and lots of teamwork. Another great place for sushi is Sakura Bana. Sakura is more a traditional type of place that makes you pay for each roll you purchase. They have great sushi as well as one of my favorite dishes in town: the chicken teriyaki plate. If you take nothing else away from this article, the one thing I want you to try is the chicken teriyaki at Sakura. It is a life changing experience and will be the new standard at which you judge all other teriyaki dishes in your future. Also do not sleep on Sakura’s tempura dishes. They have great shrimp, crab, and vegetable tempura.

Healthy tips to follow for an active lifestyle When Donuts Don’t Work Out by Maclain Kennedy This column is here to give helpful tips and ways to get in shape, how to eat healthy, and more. Please email me with any topics you want me to cover at kennedyal@jacksonprep.net How to start getting in shape: A common predicament for most high school students is ing out can be a frustrating pro-

cess that appears easiest when avoided all together. However, fear not. With these few simple steps, you’ll be on your way to getting in shape in no time. Take this common example: You make a New Year’s resolution to get in shape, but by the time January 31 rolls around, you’ve forgotten about it totally. The start of a new school year is the perfect time to try again. First, you need to set

goals. Make a list of what you want to accomplish, and write it down. Then you can plan times to work out after school or go to the gym on the weekends. You don’t have to do a strenuous three-hour workout, but something as simple as 45 minutes to an hour workout

Finding something that you’re interested in is key in making excercise not feel like a chore.

It’s important that you continue to do these workouts, not just workout whenever you feel like it. Establishing a workout routine is the best. An example would be arranging to go for a run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and doing core workouts on Tuesday and Thursday. Once you’ve done that, you need to form good eating habits. Eating junk food for breakfast,

lunch, and dinner isn’t going to give you the energy you need to workout. The Prep cafeteria has lots of healthy options to offer such as salad, fresh fruit, yogurt, and more. Drinking water during the day is also helpful, and it has some surprising health drated can help clear skin, weight, and more. The Insti-

tutes of Medicine and Nutrition Board says that the average male teenager needs about 14 cups of water per day day, while the average female teenager needs almost 10 cups of water per day. Especially in this Mississippi heat, it’s important to drink water. Finding something that you’re interested in is key in making excercise not feel like a chore. Being involved in a sport is a great way to exercise. If not, try going to a class at your local gym. You could also go for a run or bike ride at home, or go walking with friends. These things aren’t going to get you in shape all by themselves, but they can certainly help you on your start to get-

Opinion

Presidential race or reality TV show? Opinion: Holman Buchanan The political season this year is unlike any other in history. Between Donald Trump with his statements and Hillary Clinton with her heap of scandals and lies, this year both candidates, Democrat and Republican, have been deemed the most unlikeable candidates running for President. Many have stated that they are not voting in this election and that might be the factor that will determine the Presidency. The most recent Real Clear Politics poll shows Clinton with only a 2 point lead over Trump head to head. And with Gary Johnson and Jill Stein in the mix, it’s a dead heat at 42 % for both Trump and Clinton. For many it is the decision between the lesser of two evils and this is why many have decided to vote third party. I view voting third party as more effectively taking a vote away from a major party candidate rather than for the third party candidate. In my opinion, those voting third party are not doing so because they truly believe that candidate can win, but to satisfy their moral decisions. When it comes to this, my response would be “Has there ever been a perfect candidate that aligns exactly with your views?” Absolutely not. There will always be opinions or stances that you do not agree with in a candidate. The decision then becomes which candidate do you fundamentally agree with. Or perhaps in this election, which candidates actions can you stand more than the other? The Democratic candidate is Hillary Clinton. Former First lady to Bill Clinton, Senator of

is not done right. He has his flaws, yes, but they are a result of remarks he has said and not of things he has done. Trump has said things that have offended certain groups such as latinos and women. Or that is what the media wants you to think. By wanting to deport and keep out illegal immigrants, the media have depicted this as a hate toward latinos. For a woman who tried to grab Trump at a rally, security pushed her off. Now, somehow, the media says Trump hates women. The media is unreliable and can report whatever and however they want. There is no doubt, Trump has a loud mouth and started the political season like a wild horse. He would say anything that came to his mouth, based on his thoughts, not thinking about votes. And for voters in the primary, they agreed with this method. For many Americans, however, they prefer a candidate that will say things the audience wants to hear, rather than truth. In this election, voters will need to decide whether they want a candidate that has

been in politics for nearly 30 years, some things good, and many bad, or a candidate that had been in the business world all of this time, many successful businesses, and some that have failed, just like a businessman. They will need to decide between a candidate that wants to raise taxes to spoon feed the middle class for an average safe lifestyle, or a candidate that wants to lower taxes to free workers to earn a better living for themselves and strive for a better lifestyle. Voters will need to choose between a candidate that wants to encourage world trade by sending manufacturers and jobs out of the country or a candidate that will tax companies to encourage them to stay in the US. The decision this year for President is one of the more exciting ones of any time, and one of the more important ones of our time. There are many problems in our country today, especially our national debt, and the next President will be the one that will need to change that.
