OUR LOGO
Our logo is our flag. It represents us. Using the logo consistently (and correctly) will help ensure we are perceived as a trustworthy and respectable nonprofit organization. It also helps to build brand awareness, so that our logo is more likely to be recognized easily.
A logo cannot communicate all by itself. Therefore, we encourage the use of photography in conjunction with our logo. Place our logo with plenty of free space, ensuring contrast.
Try to avoid the need to use a reversed version of the logo.
One way to achieve this is to use the logo on top of a white “tab” graphic (as shown below). This is the approved treatment if placing the logo over a dark background or photo that obstructs the logo. However, it may be used reversed on an approved brand color (not all colors in the palette are acceptable for this treatment).
Our logo consists of three components: CompTIA wordmark, Spark wordmark, and our mark (spark graphic symbol).
Tab background opacity set to 95%
Safe Zone
Maintain a minimum clear zone on all sides of our logo equal to the height of the letter K in the wordmark.
Don’t place the logo over imagery unless it has enough white space, or white space is created by a screened graphic, a gradient, or an overlay.
Restrictions on Logo Usage
Minimum Size
When printed, the logo should never appear smaller than 1.25" in width.
Don’t change the logo typeface
Don’t outline the logo
Don’t add a stroke to the logo
Don’t crop or obstruct the logo
Don’t separate components of the logo
Don’t rotate the logo
Don’t change the color of the logo
Don’t alter or skew the logo
spark (noun) our brand symbol spark (verb) to ignite interest; to set off in a burst of activity; to respond with enthusiasm
Our spark symbol represents the energy, focus and power of our organization — illustrating how our spark “powers” all of the programs that work toward achieving our mission. Therefore, this symbol (logomark) should be used as the symbol for all programs operating within the organization, with no variations or competing symbols.
The spark should always appear in our brand’s call-to-action (CTA) orange and never in any other color. Do not alter or rotate the spark symbol. Do not overuse the symbol (which dilutes its effectiveness).
[NOTE and question for Larissa: maybe include a page the mirrors the 80/20 rule that they have in the CompTIA brand guide?]
Restrictions on Spark Symbol Usage
(All of the restrictions outlined relative to the full lockup on the previous page/screen apply to the usage of the Spark symbol.)
OUR BRAND COLORS THE MEANING BEHIND OUR COLORS
BLUE: POSITIVITY & IMPROVEMENT
Blue is the most chosen “favorite color” and, more specifically, bright blues remind us of blue skies, happiness and improvement. Sky blue is often associated with positive future states (“blue skies ahead”).
NAVY: TRUST & RELIABILITY
Navy blues inspire ideas of loyalty, confidence, security/safety and reliable leadership.
ORANGE: ENERGY & INNOVATION
Orange conveys energy and innovation (like how a “spark” ignites interest and provides power). Orange also is often associated with youthfulness.
GREEN: GREEN MEANS GO
Green means go. It evokes feelings of something being new and fresh. Brighter lime greens are also associated with youthfulness.

Pencil gray and ink pen navy should be used for the “hand-drawn” elements (see that section).
Highlighter green can be used creatively to “highlight” text that should stand out to the reader. It can also be used on top of the ink pen navy. These two colors are designed to work well together, particularly with infographics and iconography.
Our primary brand color is spark blue which should be used as liberally as possible to achieve a consistent brand look. This is the only color in the palette that should be used in large blocks of color.
The spark orange is our call-to-action (CTA) color. The only acceptable use of this color, besides the spark symbol, is when highlighting a CTA (such as by circling it or “drawing” an orange arrow to highlight it). Orange should never be used for text of any kind.
To expand the available colors for graphic design, while retaining consistency, some of our brand colors may be screened to specific percentages. These are the allowed tints. Note that spark orange and ink pen navy should never be screened.

Through photography, we add context and depth to our messages. Every photo, no matter its type, serves to tell a compelling story. Whenever possible, use authentic photographs of real program participants. It is important to always ensure that there is an image release on file from any persons in the photo, but this is particularly true when using images of minors. Please always double check with marketing to ensure a photograph can be used.
BRAND IMAGERY PHOTOGRAPHY
There is currently a limited library of authentic photos available, so stock imagery has been carefully selected and is available for use. We have taken care to curate images that show diversity and inclusivity, but this is always something to keep in mind any time you are selecting imagery for marketing materials.
To further establish our brand personality, fun “hand-drawn” elements should be incorporated into designs when appropriate. Some examples are shown here. Use these elements sparingly, to increase their visual interest and impact. Additional or custom elements are available upon request.
BRAND IMAGERY
HAND-DRAWN ELEMENTS
These elements should only be used in pencil gray, ink pen navy and sometimes (but not often) in highlighter green when appropriate. These “extra” elements should appear as though they were added after-thefact, as if a teacher or student has taken a pen, pencil, or highlighter to the document/design. These handdrawn elements are designed to be be paired with the Better Times font (which should only appear in pencil gray or ink pen navy and never any other color).
Spark orange should only be utilized if the hand-drawn element is highlighting a call-to-action, which should most often be arrows, circles or underlines. Spark orange is a second “highlighter” color that can be used to circle important CTA information, like someone might with an actual orange highlighter.

ICONOGRAPHY
Iconography is acceptable provided that it matches the style shown in these examples. The “hand-drawn” approach should not be used for iconography or infographics. Use highlighter green or ink pen navy for iconography.
For programs that fall under the CompTIA Spark brand, they must be co-branded as shown here, using the “Powered by” language. It is also acceptable to use the two elements separately, provided they are both on a single page or can fit within a viewable area of a screen. Programs under CompTIA Spark can retain unique names, but must never be independently branded.
