Ruth (Briscoe) Ray was born near Liberal Kansas on March 16, 1913. She attended Prairie Dell School in Blacktail Township, North Dakota. At the age of 16, Ruth started work at Banners' Bakery, where Conlin's Furniture is presently located. She met Chester Ray at the bakery. On June of 1932, Ruth and Chester were married in Wolf Point, MT. They honey-mooned with a trip to Aberdeen. Chester and his brother, Duff started a plumbing shop in 1935 where the J.C. Penney store is now located. They lived in the back quarters of the shop. Ruth did the bookwork and answered the phones. When the war started in 1942, the Government came and took all of the copper for the war effort, so Chester, their son and Ruth moved to Vallejo, CA. Chester went to work in the ship yards, Ruth went to work in the Bible Book Store and their son got a paper route. In 1945 they returned to Williston where they rejoined the Ray Plumbing and Heating Co., and Ruth worked in the office for 34 years. While working Ruth was a Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years and treasurer of her church for 17 years. After Chester retired they lived in Apache Junction, AZ. Chester's health was not good. They lived in Arizona for 10 years-coming home for the summers. While here they delivered meals-on-wheels. In 1988 their son passed away. Ruth has three grandchildren; LES in Coco, FL, BLAINE in Beaverton, OR. And LINDSEY in Portland, OR. She also has 4 great-grandchildren. In 1994 Chester passed away. They had been married 62 years. Ruth then returned to Williston, her home. Ruth has been active in Christians Woman's Club for 20 years. Ruth is very involved with the Craft Ladies at the Senior Center. She enjoys their fellowship and doing crafts. Ruth has been an active volunteer at the center over the years and we are pleased to have her as a volunteer of the month for March 2009.
