The Williston Basin Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization that was formed in 1993 to serve the citizens of Divide, Williams and McKenzie counties by helping improve the quality of life within this area. It is one of 375 councils throughout the United States that provides coordinated assistance to develop and carryout plans for social, economic, rural development needs, opportunities and solutions. Councils are made up of volunteer representatives from local sponsors that provide the primary means of program delivery in each RC&D Area. These RC&D Councils are responsible for directing the program at the local level by combining a planning and implementation process which addresses local objectives. They seek to “make things happen” by enhancing social, economic, and environmental conditions in rural areas by finding technical and financial assistance from a variety of sources. The Williston Basin RC&D Council provides program delivery by establishing an area plan. This long-range (5-year) plan identifies problems within the RC&D area and assesses and prioritizes them. Broad objectives and specific goals are established and proper courses of action are determined. The Williston Basin RC&D Council is hereby requesting assistance from the public to provide input on completing a survey to help them update their area plan. Copies of this survey can be secured on-line at NDRCD.org under “Area Plan” at the Williston Basin website, or picked up at the Williston Basin RC&D office located on the second floor of Williston City Hall, or can be mailed out by contacting Jeff Roel, RC&D Coordinator at (701)774-1382.

Anytime an intelligent, southern, family man with a common-sense philosophy mixes with an uninhibited, trendy, single guy with a rock star mentality, everyone will find something to laugh about “The Saints and Sinners Comedy Tour” is one that mixes the mainstream, working man’s material of Matthew Lumpkin with the juvenile eccentricities of Patrick Jolle into one clever, brilliant, and down right funny show. Picture of Success Sandy Steinberg is one of our volunteer persons that serves meals at our Prairieview Site. She assists in serving out and cleaning after the noon meal services. There are approximately 15 meals (congregate and home delivered) provided each day at the Prairieview Site. Sandy was born in Florida's Niceville Airforce Base. At the age of three, she moved with her parents, James and Joanne Cozart, along with her two sisters, Cumi and Carla to Opheim, MT. After living there for two years the family moved to Williston. Her parents and sisters still reside here in town. Sandy and her husband Alan also live her in Williston. They enjoy watching football, stock-car races, traveling, camping and fishing. Sandy enjoys doing latch-hook, playing board games, singing karaoke, listening to live music and playing cards. She is a member of the local Women to the Moose, First Baptist Church and the Fort Union Muzzleloaders. An accomplishment that she is very proud of is attaining her G.E.D. The two things that she wants to do in the future are travel to Nashville and Disneyland. We honor Sandy Steinberg as our March 2008 FNB/T Volunteer of the month because she is dedicated to volunteering Daily, is dependable and provides communications between the Prairieview meal service and our Heritage Center Management.

WSC Foundation to safeguard Shermorry Collection Thanks to family and friends the works of the late William E. “Bill” Shemorry will live on. A Williston native, Shemorry captured area history through the lens of his camera and spread the word through his numerous writings over a journalism career that spanned nearly 70 years. Now others will be able to enjoy his efforts for generations to come thanks to wife Glo. A ceremony to highlight the effort was held Monday (March 10) on the campus of Williston Thomas A. Kvamme State College to provide an update and preview of the work The Scope that has been completed to date by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Some 40 family, friends and representatives of the SHSND had the privilege to be on hand for the unveiling. Glo Shemorry, who was responsible for donating the collection to the Williston State College Foundation, briefed guests and gave thanks to those who had a hand in bringing the collection to life.

his wife Glo made the decision to turn the collection over to the Williston State College Foundation, the wheels were put in motion. Strinden, who provided experience having served on an advisory board for historical records, turned to the professionals for advice. That led to Gerald “Jerry” Newborg, who at that time was serving as the archivist for the SHSND, coming to Williston to check out the massive collection. It was decided at that time the treasure would be stored in a safe area at WSC. Former WSC Foundation Director Garvin Stevens was very instrumental, along with Diane Hagen of the Wiliston Area Chamber of Commerce and others on the committee including WSC Foundation Director Terry Olson, WSC Foundation President Craig Oksol and WSC President Dr. Joe McCann.

BECKER LENDS HAND Ted Becker is credited with ensuring the entire collection was hauled from the Shemorry residence to WSC for temporary and proper storage. Becker, unable to be on hand for the ceremony, sent a letter that was read on his behalf. Leading up to Monday, it was Borlog and a helper from the State Historical Society of North Dakota, who were called upon to go through the works. That led to Lottie Bailey of the SHSND A GREAT HISTORIAN being involved in picking out what was thought to be the most While working as a newspaper man, Shemorry became a fragile and items that needed to be restored. famed historian. Reportedly she has a lot of work still to do as the 2,100 photos are but a taste of the more than 35,000 photos in the collection. That led to Newborg saying, “This is only a sampler and a huge collection with the future to be discussed.” “We hope there will be additional money available to hire her (Ergen) once again and continue her work,” said Strinden. Strinden noted the photographs range from scenes in Williston and the surrounding area including everything from the oil fields to high school tournaments. “You name it,” added Strinden. Strinden pointed out that Shemorry lived in Williston for the majority of his life, with the exception of the time he devoted in the military as a photographer that took him around the world. “I can’t give the folks at the State Historical Society enough credit,” said Strinden, who is elated to be a part of this project. BJ MAHAR MAKES CLICK A highlight of the event was when BJ Mahar, the grandson of Glo and son of Rich and Mary Mahar of Williston, was called upon for the first click on the computer to unveil the collection. Glo had asked BJ, an eighth-grader, to be her “escort” for the ceremony and it proved to be a grand moment for the young lad.

CHECK THE WEB Presently you can click on www.dp3.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu:2668/index.php or to make things easier click on the www.keyzradio.com website for a direct link. This is reported to be a temporary site with plans to eventually switch to digitalhorizonsonline.org down the road. We encourage you to become involved in this effort. LORIE LINE HERE Advance tickets for the Lorie Line concert set for 7:30 p.m. on May 6 in the Williston High School Auditorium can be obtained by calling 572-0967 and dial extension 249. Lorie is hitting the road once again this spring, and Williston has been selected as one of the many stops. This will be a casual night of entertainment, featuring her piano playing as the core of the show. We can attest to the quality of this lady and encourage you to attend. The Williston High School music department is serving as host for the event. Watch for further details on this concert. SHRINE CIRCUS SET Plan to attend the annual Williston Shrine Circus set for April 8th at the Raymond Family Community Center. This event promises fun for all ages. At the same time funds are raised to support great causes.

BJ Mahar, the grandson of Glo Shemorry, was called upon to make the first click as the William E. “Bill” Shemorry Photograph Collection was debuted on March 10 at WSC. VERY IMPRESSIVE We can vouch for the collection being impressive and the effort was most worthy. Those in attendance were impressed with what they saw, along with Olson who said, “I’m very impressed.” GLO IS HAPPY Glo told us Bill had wanted her to continue his works, and she is very happy and pleased with what has taken place. Thanks to Vern Neff, a local attorney who handled the legal paperwork needed to transfer the collection, the reality of this huge undertaking is off the ground. During the gathering at WSC Neff pointed out, “This collection will become more valuable with time.”

FAMILY MEMBERS On hand for the official viewing on Monday were a number of family members, including Bill’s daughters Gay (Dave) Williamson and Jan (Bill) Lee. Gay, who was celebrating her “birthday week,” announced she and her husband would be donating $5,000 to the WSC Foundation to be used to further this project. Meanwhile, Jan, who was in tears, was overwhelmed as she said, “All dad wanted to do was have them alphabetized.” SHARE THE MOMENT During this session, Gay recalled her father ’s love for the “Fire Department.” She noted the boots that are often referenced while taking his world famous Clarence Iverson No. 1 Oil well on April 4, 1951 near Approximately 40 friends and family were joined by Tioga, were “No doubt his fire boots.” members of the State Historical Society of North Dakota Gay pointed out her father was proud for the official unveiling of the William E. “Bill” Shemorry Photograph Collection at Williston State College on March to work with the fire department and 10. TT Photo by Thomas A. Kvamme enjoyed being first on the scene, along with being able to capture the moment. It should be noted the Iverson photo is not a part of the collection and that historic negative and print remains property of Glo Shemorry. A GREAT PROJECT We can tell you first-hand this is a great project and is a treasure that must be made available to as many folks as possible. Having had the opportunity to know Bill was indeed an honor and he was definitely one-of-a-kind. The grand effort displayed, with an assist from the State Historical Society of North Dakota, is magnificent. Everyone that had a hand in getting this project to fruition deserves a pat on the back. One thing for certain, this is not a time to rest, but to use this event as a stepping stone to assure Bill’s work is preserved and appreciated. Funding for this effort will no doubt become an issue and you can contact Terry Olson

ELDON JOHNSON SHINES Earlier we told you about the success of Williston native Eldon Johnson as he was among five finalists for the Country Colgate Showdown in Nashville. While Johnson didn’t win that event, he gained some valuable experience as he performed on stage at The Ryman Auditorium. Now we have learned Johnson received confirmation he was selected as a regional finalist for the television version of Nashville Star. That means a return trip to Nashville on March 21-22 and he will be performing in front of NBC executives and executive producers, along with casting directors and record label representatives from Nashville Star. We can also tell you the initial broadcast of the Colgate Country Showdown, with LeAnn Rimes as the host, will be broadcast at 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the NBC network. CD’s of that competition are available and you can contact Eldon’s mother Coleen locally at 572-6040 for further details. You can learn more about and make a direct connection with Johnson by clicking on www.truenorthzone.com OXENDAHL BENEFIT You will have an opportunity to help a friend in need. This comes to be as a benefit for Tom Oxendahl, 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Lutheran Brethren Church in Williston. Along with the meal a number of baked goods and a silent auction will be available. Tom has been battling diabetes complications since the age of 10 and also has a rare blood disorder. This requires doctoring at the Mayo Clinic and the event will help to cover his medical expenses while at Mayo. Now is the time for the Williston area to step to the plate, like they have been known to do, and help this young man and his family out. Tom is the son of Terry and Karen Oxendahl of Williston. If unable to attend you can also mail donations to Thrivent West Williams Chapter, Mary Stenberg, Financial Director, at 1906 9th Ave. East, Williston ND 58801. Thrivent will also be providing a supplement funding for this event. We encourage you to do your part in this time of need. WILLISTON CONCERT ASSOCIATION Members of the Williston Concert Association should make note that the next performance, a classical pianist, is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Williston High School Auditorium. At the same time we alert you of the membership drive for next season is underway and this is a great bargain. WCA brings top artists to our community throughout the year for the entire family. You can contact Jacki Keck at 572-7829 or Liz Martin at 572-2818 concerning memberships. You won’t be disappointed. Coaching is away of life for former Tetons Time has come to make some changes By THOMAS A. KVAMME The Scope There’s a time for everything. This includes stepping up, stepping down or simply making a career change. Earlier it was announced that after 26 years heading up the men’s basketball program at the University of North DakotaWilliston and the transition period to Williston State College, Terry Olson made a decision to Tom Suelzle turn the reins over to a product of the system. Enter Hunter Berg, a Zahl native and outstanding product of Grenora High School, who spent two seasons in a Teton uniform. Berg rejoined the Teton program as the women’s basketball coach and slipped into the athletic director role replacing Olson, before recently being tabbed to step in as Olson’s replacement at the helm of the men’s cage program next season. While Olson steps down, we can tell you he’s not alone, as other coaches with numerous ties to the Teton program are in the same boat. SELECTED TO LEAD LADY TETONS While putting to rest a 30-year run heading up the girl’s basketball program Watford City native Tom Suelzle will be charting some new waters. While he had plans to retire his teaching post, Suelzle was debating reapplying for the head cage post and going back on the bench for another high school season. That was until he was offered the head coaching position to guide the fortunes of the Williston State College women’s basketball program. Suelzle will step in to replace Berg, who moves over to the men’s program at WSC, along with serving as the athletic director. Suelzle, a 1974 graduate of Watford City, is certainly no stranger to the college program here as he attended what was then known as the University of North Dakota-Williston and played basketball for the Tetons for two seasons under Darrell Anderson. From Williston he went on to Dickinson State University to continue playing hoops and pocket his credentials. Returning to his hometown, Suelzle worked as an assistant coach his first season, while closing out 28 years as the head mentor. Along with his senior year at DSU, where he served as a junior varsity coach, this leaves him with an even 30 years of Xs and Os to date. IMPRESSIVE RECORD During his time guiding the Wolves, Suelzle piled up a Class B win-loss record of 514-175. He took the WC squad to the state tournament 11 times, with the best finish being second-place hardware in 1998. Suelzle also served as an assistant coach of the boy’s program at Watford City for 21 seasons. GREAT OPPORTUNITY “I had decided to retire from teaching and could reapply to coach and still hadn’t made a decision before this opportunity came along,” said Suelzle. “I’m not getting any younger and I decided looking forward, this just might recharge the batteries.” The veteran coach noted he has traveled to the same gyms for 29 years and now he will be in line for some different bus trips. “I’m looking forward to working with all the people up there and I look at it as an opportunity as I enjoyed every one of my years and am very pleased,” said Suelzle. His final season ended with a record of 16-8, losing to New Town,

SCOPE Continued from Page 2 CHOKECHERRY FESTIVAL You can mark down Aug. 16 on your calendar as that’s the date that has been penciled in for the second state Chokecherry Festival. Williston, the home of the “Chokecherry Kids,” will host this grand event. Plans are in the works to make this event much bigger and provide a great weekend of events. We’ll update you as word becomes available. CHECK PAST ISSUES Thanks to an assist from John Anfinson, who serves as the webmaster at Williston State College, you can now check out past and present issues of Teton Thunder. All you have to do is go to the WSC homepage at www.wsc.nodak.edu and click on the Teton Thunder icon. At the same time the current issue of TT is available online at www.theshopperinc.net for a period of one week. Kvamme can be reached at scopend@yahoo.com

while finishing out in third place. WILLISTON CONNECTIONS For Suelzle Williston offers a number of connections, with his wife Pam (Gludt) calling Coyote country home. Pam attended UNDW, while their son Chris spent his initial two years at UND-W prior to heading on to NDSU at Fargo, before attending the University of Bruce Anderson North Dakota to earn his law degree. Chris now practices law in Williston for the Nilles Law Firm along with Malcolm Pippin. Suelzle will have plenty of company in Williston as the couple’s other son Ben works for T&K Inspection. HIT RECRUITING TRAIL Suelzle has done a lot of refereeing involving the Lady Tetons, getting a first hand look at the college level players. That assessment is something that will come in handy as he takes to the recruiting trail seeking talented area cagers to fill out his roster. “It will be different with older kids who already know how to play, while it will be a challenge to get to know your team,” said Suelzle. Having coached a number of top-level players at Watford City, Suelzle appears to be a good fit to step up to the college ranks. OFF ON RIGHT FOOT From the Class A girl’s basketball ranks, Bruce Anderson of Minot has also tendered his resignation after a stellar career. With no plans to continue coaching, Anderson wraps up 31 years as the head coach at Minot, going along with six seasons guiding Class B cagers in Grenora. Now the New Rockford native has decided 37 seasons on the bench is enough. The road to his coaching career ran through Williston as well, playing hoops for one season under Phil Rabon. However, his cage court time was cut short due to what he termed “jumper’s knee.” Staying on at UND-W for two years, it was during his time in Williston he also met his bride of 38 years, Nancy (Shaw). Getting off on the right foot, he attended Minot State College, graduating in 1971 with his teaching credentials along with degrees in physical education and business. FIRST STOP GRENORA Grenora proved to be the first stop as Anderson served as the girls head coach for four seasons and guided the boys for five campaigns. Anderson recalled back in 1972 in the District 6 boy’s title game held in SEE COACHING continued on page 4

Greetings from the WSC Foundation Well, with March half gone and April around the corner, the tax season is upon us. The 2007 North Dakota income tax law governing the planned gift tax credit for individuals changed greatly. Highlights include an increase in the tax credit for an individual from $5000 to $10,000 ($20,000, if married and filing jointly) and the rate of credit increased from 20 percent to 40 percent. What is also significant is that the definition of “planned gift” was expanded and the carryforward time period for unused credit was increased from two Terry Olson (2) years to three (3) years. In addition, a new Executive Director income tax credit is available to an estate, trust, WSC Foundation partnership, C corporation, S corporation, or LLC that makes a charitable contribution to a qualified endowment of a qualified North Dakota nonprofit organization. Check with your tax accountant for more details, but from our standpoint at the Foundation, it appears that gifts given to your favorite charitable organizations would reduce your state income tax.

COACHING Continued from Page 3 Williston his team topped the Watford City squad coached by Bob Waldahl, with Tom Suelzle as a point guard for the Wolves. MOVES TO MINOT With the next move to Minot, Anderson has made numerous trips back to Williston over the years to do battle with the Coyotes. That run began in 1977 as Anderson explained, “We were looking to make a move and I came in as an assistant coach, while my second year Duane Carlson hired me.” He quickly added, “That was 30 years ago.” SON PLAYS HERE Like father, like son, proved to be the case as Jason Anderson spent two seasons playing basketball at Williston under the tutelage of Olson. Other direct connections to the college include his brother Darrell who was coach of the Tetons from 1970 to 1977, winning several conference crowns. Anderson has also sent a number of his players, with two in starting roles this past season, suiting up for the Lady Tetons. “I had a great time and I always had a good feeling about recommending players to go to Williston,” said Anderson. REFLECT ON CAREER Overall Anderson boasts a record of 637-322, while taking one of his Grenora and 21 Minot teams to the state tournament. In 1978 his Minot entry walked away with the state title. Anderson also claimed seven regular season crowns during his time in the WDA, while capturing eight West Region titles. During his time at Grenora his teams won four district, four conference and one region title, to go along with a state title in 1975. Honors have included being tabbed as the state Coach of The Year three times, West Region Class A Coach of The Year nine times and was a national Coach of The Year finalist three times. TIME FOR FAMILY With a little more time on his hands this may allow an opportunity to spend more time with family members. Jason has gone on to do well for himself as

I am amazed at the number of people in our region who have directed significant gifts to WSC via our Foundation. Our plans for the near future include making more scholarship dollars available to our regional high school students. On another note, I would like to share with you some amazing figures taken from The Chronicle of Philanthropy. The University of North Carolina recently completed an eight-year capital campaign with a goal of $2 billion; they raised $2.4 billion. Harvard University now has a sliding scale for costs based on family income to make attending Harvard more affordable. Interestingly, Harvard raised nearly $600 million from private donors in 2007. It is staggering to see the amount of money some of the larger, prestigious universities have. Well, we certainly are not Harvard or North Carolina, but our Foundation and the people in this area have made this Foundation one to be proud of. Thanks to those generous donors. ‘Til next time, Go Tetons! after college in Williston he attended Louisiana State University, where he spent time with his cousin Justin. Jason now resides in Houston, Texas, where he manages power plants, according to his father. His sister Michelle, who played basketball at Minot under her father, graduated in 1991 and now lives in Boise, Idaho, where she tends to the duties of being a mother while her husband is a pilot for UPS. The extra time will also allow Bruce and Nancy precious time to spend with their three grandchildren including Jason’s son Christian, while Michelle offers the attraction of Livia and Katelyn. “We are proud grandparents,” said Anderson. HOBBY HISTORIAN While Anderson has recorded many chapters of history involving the sport of basketball, he likes to consider himself as a “hobby historian.”While he never taught social studies, he is currently writing a photograph history of Minot, dealing with some 16,000 photographs covering Minot and the surrounding area. Plans call for a 400-page book to be printed. With 37 years of coaching under his belt perhaps the day will come when he pens a book about some of his experiences. EVEN MORE COACHES Earlier we told you about Watford City product Dave Leom who is in his first season as head coach of the boy’s basketball team at Milaca High School in Milaca, Minn. There’s no doubt there are others who have taken what they learned on the court at WSC and have opted to try their hand at coaching. Among those are Mike Hendrickson of Williston who just guided his Fargo South Bruins to a second-place finish at the state Class A tournament, along with Fred and Guy Fridley of Watford City. Fred serves as the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Mary, while Guy is coaching women’s basketball and softball at Dickinson State University. Should you have any names or stories of interest to share we would love to hear from you. Kvamme can be reached at scopend@yahoo.com

And thou shalt love the Lord thy god with all thy heart, and with all they soul, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, thou shalt love they neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” My Good Friend, come meet my Best Friend. Join us at Apostolic Lighthouse on March 30, 2008 at 2:00pm as we celebrate our Friends in Williston & the surrounding areas. There will be a meal following service.
