WHS students discuss needs at WSC
Terry Olson Executive Director WSC Foundation
Spring is officially here, but warmer weather and rain would be nice. Springtime for high school seniors means concluding high school and shifting to thoughts of college. I hope those that are still unsure about where to attend college will decide on Williston State.
At the heart of our discussions was what would students like to see at WSC? In essence, what could our college offer that would entice them? In short, they are most interested in campus activities – band, choir, drama, more sports, and clubs; friendly teachers; foreign language courses; modern dorms; and scholarship opportunities. Obviously, this is just a summary, but these items appeared to be very important.
The Foundation has made a significant commitment to increasing scholarship dollars. I encourage anyone who is considering WSC to check out the scholarships that are available through its financial aid department. The Foundation has been blessed with donors who have committed funds in order to make the cost affordable.
I found the dorm item interesting because these are local students, but many said they would prefer to live in the dorm while attending college. The University of Mary recognized this desire in its students and now has a program that allows Bismarck-Mandan students to live in the dorm for free while attend U of Mary. Wow, that’s aggressive!
I would like to mention that I recently visited Williston High School and spoke with seven senior class sections. As times change, I think it is always important to listen to the younger generation. They do have a lot to offer and they are our customers.
I gathered a great deal of information at WHS, but more importantly, I was impressed by the maturity, thought process, and manners displayed by these students. Whatever you may hear out there, I do not think we need to worry about the future—we will be in good hands. Until next time…check out a baseball game. Go Tetons!
WSC provides access to Shemorry photo collection Family & friends working together to preserve for future generations On March 10, 2008, the William E Shemorry family members; friends; associates; and past and present WSC Foundation members gathered on the campus of Williston State College. This event featured a look at photos and information that have been digitized and placed on a photo database by the North Dakota State Historical Society. This event was as much a celebration of the lifetime contribution of Bill Shemorry by his family, friends, and admirers as it was a grand opening Dr. Joe McCann of access to the collection. Bill Shemorry’s WSC President contribution was in keeping and documenting his rich photographs, keeping all the newspapers printed in Williston during his working life, and collecting photographs and negatives of other regional photographers, as well as the books he wrote. His life was rich with
experience and was filled with zest. I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Shemorry and hear just a few of his fascinating first-hand stories. I am also privileged to have a small role in this project. We need to be appreciative of the major role the WSC Foundation, former Foundation President Vern Neff, former Foundation Executive Secretary Garvin Stevens, community members, and family members played in starting this project. The current WSC Foundation, its new Executive Director Terry Olson, and current President Craig Oksol have taken up the cause. I’m confident that between the Shemorry family, Dr. Dean Strinden, Vern Neff, Diane Hagen, Ted Becker, Terry Olson, and Craig Oksol, funding to continue this project will be found. Expansion of access to this photo treasure trove of history for researchers, WSC students, and MonDak region citizens will continue to enrich the College and our region. I salute the new Shemorry Foundation, the WSC Foundation, the North Dakota Historical Society, numerous community members, and the WSC library for their contributions to this project.

Schoepp begins work as intern with Minnesota Twins In today’s business world, tending to the task at hand and covering all of the bases is the only way to win the game. We’re happy to report a young man from Williston is well aware of that and is positioning himself for the future in his role as a utility player. Shawn Schoepp, a 2005 graduate of Williston High School, is juggling his studies at the University of Minnesota along with serving as a paid intern with the Minnesota Twins. Working with the group sales department, Thomas A. Kvamme Schoepp finds himself handling whatever tasks are presented him for each game. The Scope We caught up with Schoepp for a telephone interview having arrived back to his apartment to tend to some important homework. Earlier in the day he directed a group from St. Cloud State University onto the surface of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome to present the National Anthem. In addition, Schoepp was involved with a group of USA Paraplegic swimmers who were involved in the pre-game ceremonies. Schoepp noted the team members had just learned the night before who made the team, while one member threw out the first pitch. Having worked in this capacity for just a few days, Schoepp knows he must come to the ballpark ready to scramble. CHECKS IN FOR DUTY When he arrives some three hours prior to the opening pitch, he checks in with his supervisor to find out what is expected of him. He was on duty for the opening series with the Los Angeles Angels and had the pleasure of meeting former Twins centerfielder Torri Hunter. His game day duties can range from helping with those on hand for the National Anthem, to the color guard, ticket requests or other office duties. A HUGE TWINS FAN Schoepp, who terms himself as a “Huge Twins fan,” was informed about being selected for the intern position in January. It was on April Fool’s Day he came on board and is becoming comfortable with his new surroundings. Schoepp explained when he first arrived on the UM campus three years ago he found out the Twins offered internships. He knew as a freshman he had plenty of other things to worry about as he made the transition from high school to college. As a sophomore, Schoepp filled out an Shawn Schoepp application and was called for a first and second round of interviews. His present supervisor was involved in the earlier interviews. While not being selected by the Twins, Schoepp found himself spending last summer working as an intern at the Mall of America. FINALLY MAKES THE CUT In his junior season at U-Minnesota Schoepp was involved in first and second round interviews, prior to the call back which led to him being selected. “I’m very excited about being able to spend the summer at the ballpark,” said Schoepp. TENDS TO THE BOOKS While the internship is certainly something to be proud of, Schoepp knows he must tend to the business of being a student first. Wrapping up his junior college season, he is working on a degree in business with a focus on marketing, while seeking a double major in human resources and industrial relations. “When the classes end it will be fun to be able to enjoy the games,” said Schoepp. FUTURE WITH TWINS For now the internship has provided a key to learning more about the Twins organization. When asked if he would consider a future with the Twins he said, “If an opportunity to further my career with the Twins came it would be great. This is a great company with good people to work with and they try to have fun.” While he hasn’t had an opportunity to meet up with the president of the club, Dave St. Peter, Schoepp considers it, “A real cool thing that Mr. St. Peter is from North Dakota.” St. Peter is a native of Bismarck and earned his degree from the University of North Dakota before working his way up through the ranks to his present position. NOT AN AVERAGE SCHOOL While swinging for the fences, Schoepp brings along some pretty good credentials as he is presently attending the prestigious Carlson School of Management, a business school associated with the University of Minnesota.
When Schoepp was selected to this class he was among 336 honor students, from a field of 2,600 applicants. Now he finds himself in a unique position to combine his passion with the Twins and his drive to succeed in the business world. LAQUA IS GIVEN CREDIT Schoepp told us his Williston High School band director Del Laqua was instrumental in, “Pushing me to do more with my music and that helped build my work ethic.” Today Schoepp remains involved with his music as a percussionist works with the UM marching band and is also a member of the regular concert band. Schoepp recalled having been involved in the Williston band program, dating back to his first Band Day as a fifth grader. HOME SUPPORT TEAM While this young man has ventured far from his home base to further his education, his folks Kirk and Patty Schoepp of Williston keep close tabs on his progress. While no doubt proud of his involvement with the Twins, his grandparents Joe and Phyllis Bertsch are all smiles as well. Looking back to the days watching the Twins on television with his dad and grandfather, Shawn is now looking forward to a day when family members can watch a game live with him at the Metrodome. ANSETH IS IMPRESSIVE While Schoepp is making his mark in the business world, a young lady with deep connections to Williston is receiving rave reviews for her work in the world of Science. Kristi Anseth, a graduate of Williston High School and having earned her first degree from the University of North Dakota-Williston, was featured in a recent article in the Denver Post. As a professor at the University of Colorado, Anseth is attracting national press for her work. We encourage you to check out the reprinted article on Page 4 of this issue. This speaks well of the education foundation that was built right here in Williston. Due to restrictions from the Denver Post we are unable to post this story on the Internet, however, we direct alumni to access the article simply by using Google and type in Kristi Anseth Denver Post Brilliant Mind. This is the type of news which needs to be shouted from the highest towers. NIGHT OF MUSIC FRIDAY Speaking of alumni, former Williston residents will have an opportunity to give a listen to some sounds from home on Friday evening. This comes to be with the 2nd annual Night of Music set to begin at 6:30 p.m. live from the Airport International Inn. Proceeds from this event will be used in the final push to complete the Virgil Syverson Performance Center in Harmon Park. The center is being constructed and named in honor of a man who has given more than 60 years to Williston and the surrounding area, making great music. Alumni can pitch in by calling in a pledge on phone lines provided by Nemont. The number will be (701) 572-0116, with an incentive of two roundtrip tickets on Great Lakes going to one lucky name drawn from all names that call in a donation. This year is also unique with KEYZ 660 providing a live broadcast which will be streamed on the Williston State College website at www.wsc.nodak.edu/tetonslive.asp. Here’s your chance to get it done. LORIE LINE TO RETURN HERE We want to call your attention to another evening of beautiful music with Lorie Line as she makes a return engagement to the Williston High School Auditorium. That will happen at 7:30 p.m. on May 6 as a part of a 39-city tour. Should you be interested in advance tickets you can call 572-5618 at Ext. 249. WSC PAGEANT CONNECTIONS Young ladies from Williston will be competing in the Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant on June 12-14. While Williston serves as host for this event Stephanie Richter enters as Miss Williston 2008. She is the daughter of WSC instructor David (Debbie) Richter. Brooke Blotsky, a student at WSC, will compete as Miss Oil Country 2008. Others from Williston competing in the Miss North Dakota event include Rebecca Parker, Jalyssa Skalsky and Serena Christianson. An exciting announcement is on tap for Friday, which will only add to the overall pageant experience for this community. We encourage you to become involved. MARKETPLACE AT WSC APRIL 22 WSC will be hosting the 8th annual Marketplace For Kids on Tuesday, April 22. Hundreds of 4 th through 6 th graders from Williston and the surrounding area will spend the day learning about entrepreneurship, inventions and careers. SEE SCOPE continued on page 3

Heller returns home to guide WSC diamond program By THOMAS A. KVAMME The Scope With four games being called off over the weekend due to weather and field conditions the spring college baseball season offers a number of challenges for managers. Williston native Kelly Heller finds himself in that role as he maneuvers his squad through the regular season slate. Heller notes he still hasn’t had enough time to evaluate the talent on the 2008 squad at Williston State College. Kelly Heller A 1988 graduate of Williston High School, Heller is now in his fourth season guiding the fortunes of the Tetons. Baseball is certainly a game Heller can relate to. Having played a few games during the 1986 season for the Williston Keybirds American Legion squad, he went on to play for three seasons, wrapping up in 1989. His talent on the field included time on the mound and roaming centerfield. OFF TO COLLEGE Once his American Legion days were complete Heller found himself lending his talent to the college program at Des Moines Community College in Iowa. He noted he followed his then coach Chip Devlin and standout Clay Enno, who had been drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Following two years at that school he graduated and moved on to play summer baseball in Yankton, S.D. Heller liked what he found in that community and went on to attend Mount Marty where he played an additional two years of college baseball. With two more years under his belt Heller graduated in 1993. STUDENT ASSISTANT His coaching career began as a student assistant at Mount Marty, while in the spring of 1994 he became an assistant coach. That led to some time as a graduate assistant at the University of South Dakota from 1995-96. MORE WILLISTON PLAYERS It was back to Mount Marty as an assistant coach from 1997 to 1999, and during this time he had some familiar faces in camp as Scott Brahos and Dusty Bratlien joined the college baseball program. Heller pointed out the 1999 team went undefeated in conference outings at 20-0. WORKS HIS WAY HOME Having accepted the head coaching position at Mount Marty in 2000, Heller remained in that capacity for five years, until accepting an offer in June of 2004 to return to his home town and take over the reins of the WSC program. WSC PRESENT PROGRAM Heading into weekend play the Tetons stood at 6-8, with hopes of getting in some makeup games this week. That is if Mother Nature is in the mood. Earlier Heller took his 16-player WSC squad on a road trip to find some sunshine and outdoor baseball in Arizona. While his team went 0-6 on the trip, Heller wasn’t disappointed. “Opening play was a good experience and it was just nice to be outside and play baseball against some of the best teams in the country,” said Heller. While the Tetons hadn’t even stepped on the field, the teams they met up with had already logged some 20-25 games. CANADA IS KEY AREA Two Williston players from Trinity Christian School figure in this year’s roster including McHale Maristuen and Eli Black. Those two players saw plenty of playing time as members of the Williston American Legion squad. Heller noted he has players on the roster from Wyoming, Utah and
Oregon, along with eight players on the roster hailing from north of the border in Canada. They come here from as far away as British Columbia, with five coming in from the Winnipeg area. That location has proved to be an area that has produced a number of recruits. MON-DAK CONFERENCE Competing on the Division II level, the Tetons compete in the Mon-Dak Conference against teams from Bismarck State College, Minot State University-Bottineau, Miles Community College of Miles City, Mont., and Dawson Community College of Glendive, Mont. The five teams will compete in a non-advancing conference tournament. To advance to the national tourney the Tetons must take on the two North Dakota squads and a team from Madison Area Tech in Madison, Wisc., to make up Region 13. Meanwhile, the Montana entries compete for postseason hardware in Region 9, with the two regions advancing to the district level to then face another opponent from Iowa. At this stage Heller figures his team can play with the best of them. “In a league with wood bats you have to pitch and play good defense in order to be competitive,” said Heller. NEW DIAMOND FOR TETONS While Heller is excited about the future of the WSC baseball program, he is especially excited about the construction of a new baseball facility on campus. This will reportedly allow for better field conditions early on, allowing the team to get out and challenge the elements. Located on the corner of the campus off University Avenue, the new structure is a work in progress. We will update you as this facility becomes a reality. “We’re looking to play the 2008 fall season on the new field as the fence, grass, dugouts and backstop are expected to be completed this summer,” said Heller. Further construction plans call for a grandstand for the fans and a press box, while an attached clubhouse is in the plans to allow for training and locker rooms. HOME SWEET HOME Much like Heller, being at home with the Tetons having their own facility, will only enhance the program. “To be able to offer a facility on campus will be good for recruiting,” said Heller. While this facility will be the home field for the Tetons, Heller points out the diamond will be available for other use by area teams. This will also provide another option to accommodate major tournaments. Having such a facility at WSC will provide a nice setting for the athletes and students. In taking a look at the WSC program Heller said, “A chance to come back home and be close to family and have an opportunity to work with Hunter (Berg) and Terry (Olson) was an opportunity to build something good.” It appears the construction process has begun. SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS A part of building a program is spreading the word on the success of former players. Catcher Joel-Anthony DelGrande, a standout for two seasons in a Teton baseball uniform, now finds himself playing NCAA Division I baseball at Alcorn State in Mississippi. A native of the Toronto area, DelGrande had two great years here, before graduating from WSC last year. Heller reports that after the first statistics report from the Division I ranks this spring DelGrande was leading the nation in hitting at .605. “He was a very hard worker and it’s paying off for him now,” said Heller. “I had recruited him from Toronto and he followed a couple others that had been here, that had developed a connection,” said Heller. While impressive on the diamond, Heller praised DelGrande for doing a nice job in the classroom as an honor student. “That led to a scholarship and continued success,” said Heller. SCOPE Continued from Page 2 100 INNING DIAMOND GAME Something new is being introduced to this area by the Williston Parks & Recreation Department. On May 4, plans call for a 100-inning baseball game. Now, that my friends, is a lot of baseball. Plans call for the event to begin at 8 a.m. at Aafedt Stadium with players
on hand from ages 13-150. That’s what you call an age gap. This will serve as a fun way to raise needed funds for the youth programs. If you can’t play there’s still room for you as a number of volunteers will be needed. For more information or to become involved call 577-5141. (Kvamme can be reached at scopend@yahoo.com)

Picture of Success Ron Anderson was selected as the volunteer of the month for April 2008. He has volunteered to pick up and transport our groceries from the Food Bank Dispersal site here in Williston to our Heritage Center Kitchen. Ron was born and grew up in the rural Tioga area, when he left home Ron attended Radio Announcer School, then landing a job at our local radio station. Ron worked at KDSR and KEYS radio in the sale department for 37 years! During those years he spent 17 of those "on the road". On July 25, 1965 he and Betty married, and will celebrate 43 years together this July! They enjoy their 3 children and 6 grandchildren! Their children include a son - a teacher in California, another son - teacher in Nevada, and a son who is a lawyer in the Navy in Guam. Ron Anderson has supported the Keybird Baseball Program and the Williston Coyote Football Games. Ron enjoys reading non-fiction books, watching pro-rodeo and rodeos in general on TV, loves listing to country music and traveling. Ron has attended The Country Music Awards Ceremony in Nashville and was at several Las Vegas Rodeos. Ron has traveled to 44 of the states including Alaska and Hawaii. Betty and Ron travel to see their family and hope to spend more time in warmer places, like California - closer to the kids!! He would also like to make another trip to Alaska. Every month we can depend on Ron to make the trip to get our food bank items. He volunteers freely and does so with a smile. We honor Ron Anderson as our First National Bank & Trust Co. and Heritage Center volunteer of the month for April 2008.

My grateful thanks to those who have been so kind and helpful during our hospitalization and when my husband, Jim, was called to his eternal home, especially Al & Colleen, Danita & Bryan and my family. The prayers, flowers, cards, visits, hugs, phone calls and memorials were appreciated very much. Special thanks to the staff at Mercy Hospital, the wonderful gals at Dialysis, Hospice, the kind and caring staff at Bethel Home, Pastor Hamann for his comforting message, to Sandi Blikre, organist, Sharon Anderson, soloist, American Legion Honor Guard, the Bethel Staff for the luncheon and Everson Home for their loving care. Your many acts of kindness were such a comfort during the loss of Jim. God bless you all.
