Picture of Success Gloria was born in Williston on August 25, 1938 to Charlie and Helen Breen. She has two brothers and three sisters. Gloria attended Webster Grade School and graduated from Williston High School in 1957. Gloria joined the W.A.C.S. following graduation. She completed Basic Training at Fort McCellan, Advanced Training in Communications at Fort Gordon, and was assigned to Fort Dix and later to Pirmasens Army base, West Germany, where she attended the Rank of SP-4. Hershel was born in Okemah, Oklahoma on June 18, 1938. He has three brothers, four sisters, and a half sister. Hershel attended schools in Volta, Fireball, and Tulare, all in the San Joaquin Valley, California. Hershel joined the U.S. Army in 1957. He completed Basic Training at Fort Ord. He went to Fort Gordon for Communications Training. He was assigned K46, Korea, Fort Hauchuca, Arizona and Pirmasens, West Germany. While there he met Gloria. When Gloria completed her Military Service and returned to Williston, Hershel then courted her by mail, until they married on March 14, 1963, in Williston. Hershel remained in the army for the next 20 years and together they were stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas; Izmir, Turkey; Fort Hood, Texas; Seoul, Korea; and spent five years in the Panama Canal Zone, then Ft. Richie for five years, before returning to Williston. He had a 23-year career in the Army before he retired. Hershel then worked for another 20 years for Williston Woodworks before returning a second time. Hershel and Gloria have had four sons: Hershel Jr., Carl, David, and Charles. Hershel Jr. lives in Williston, Charles lives in Minot, David is in Williston, and Carl is remarried and living in Glen Ullin. Gloria is retired and enjoys doing volunteer work, crossword puzzles, and taking care of Hershel. Hershel is active with his hobbies and likes to read. Together they like to travel when they can and volunteer at the Senior Center. Five years ago in January, Hershel had Open Hear Surgery with five bypasses. Three months later he was back to delivering meals on wheels. He and Gloria presently deliver twice weekly but many weeks volunteer 4 or 5 days accounting for approximately 100 miles per month donated. We are pleased to have Hershel and Gloria Inman as our volunteers of the month for May 2008.

Larvick soars to new heights as Colonel in USAF Williston native learned the ropes at UND-W, SerVair By THOMAS A. KVAMME The Scope Atten-Hut! Now that we’ve got your attention, you are directed to a Williston native who will soon achieve the rank of Colonel in just over 20 years of service in a United States Air Force uniform. That promotion ceremony is set for May 30 for Jon A. Larvick, a 1979 graduate of Williston High School and a 1981 graduate of the University of North Dakota-Williston. Jon A. Larvick Larvick, 46, is presently a Lt. Colonel in the Lt. Colonel - USAF USAF, assigned as the Director, Bulk Petroleum for Defense Energy Support Center (Defense Logistics Agency) at the Defense Energy Support Center, Ft. Belvoir, Va. You can learn more about this center by clicking on www.desc.dla.mil/ default.asp. WIDESPREAD DUTIES His duties, while wide spread, include overseeing the bulk petroleum business unit that provides contracting, distribution, transportation and inventory management for bulk fuels, additives, specialty fuels and lube oil
worldwide for Department of Defense and other Federal Government customers. This unit also purchases assigned bulk petroleum products, additives, transportation services, and negotiates product exchanges and sales of excess bulk petroleum products. Larvick recently attended a DESC Worldwide Energy Conference and Trade Show in Arlington, Va. GRADUATE OF UND-W Not too bad for a young man who graduated from UND-W in 1981. At UND-W he spent two years earning an associate’s degree prior to moving east to further his education at the University of North Dakota. BEGAN AT SERVAIR It wasn’t all that long ago that Larvick found himself in the fueling business on a smaller scale. You see, Larvick coincidentally worked part time at SerVair for Jack Daniels, at the local charter air service. Getting a start fueling airplanes, Larvick now is doing the same type of work, only for the Department of Defense. CREDITS FATHER, VETERANS Larvick, the son of Jordy and the late Eileen Larvick of Williston, gives credit to his father and veterans for his decision to seek a career in the military. “I think my decision to join the Air Force was influenced by my father and LARVICK Continued on Page 3
Wow! Where did this school year go? Graduation has taken place at WSC and the high schools are not far behind. Recently, I attended the awards ceremony at Williston High School and presented some $25,000 in scholarships to Williston High School Seniors. Del Easton from the Coyote Foundation awarded some $28,000. Boy, is Williston fortunate to have Del Easton, a true gentleman who does a tremendous job. Listening to the touching stories of several memorial scholarships and having the luxury of giving scholarships from endowments Terry Olson created by generous donors made the Executive Director WSC Foundation evening both fun and moving. Scholarships really do make a difference for these students. Along the same lines, I recently received a generous amount of money from the friends and family of Travis Gunlikson for his memorial scholarship
fund. Because I knew Travis, and loved his enthusiasm for cheering on the Tetons and his love of life, it is great to see his name and memory kept alive. Our newest scholarship fund was started in memory of Don Vizina. I did not know Don, but the number of contractors, friends, and associates that have donated money to get the fund started shows me Don must have been quite a man. Anyone interested in contributing to this scholarship fund can contact the Foundation or John Sanders of Cactus Concrete. How about that? A friend, and competitor, starting a memorial scholarship fund. Thanks, John. Endowments do make a difference and scholarships in people’s names do keep their memory alive. Maybe there is someone in your life whose name and memory should be kept alive, and endowment would be a great way to do it. Thanks. Have a great summer and look for the Teton Thunder to return this fall.
Williston State College is a great institution with a strong history of getting their students prepared for life. It is my wish that many of you students consider the opportunities that banking and other financial services careers can offer. Everything is up to you and with hard work, you can do or be anything you desire.

Christofferson looking forward to second season with WNBA Sparks In the April issue of Teton Thunder we told you about the national attention alum Kristi Anseth was receiving for her work in the science field. This time around we can alert you about another WSC (UND-W) alum continuing to capture big-time headlines. Carla Christofferson, you might recall, is in her second season as the co-owner of the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. Teaming with Katherine Goodman she purchased the Sparks in December of 2006 for Thomas A. Kvamme a sum of $10 million. Just recently the Sparks The Scope acquired the number one selection in the draft and that leaves Christofferson excited about what lies ahead. In the NY Times article that featured a headline entitled, “New Breed of Tycoon Brings Order to Court,” her classmate at UND-W Colleen Anderson is quoted discussing her friend. Christofferson tells us she has been a “Bit overwhelmed,” of late, as along with her basketball responsibilities she has been kept rather busy in another court, taking on duties as a managing partner of the Los Angeles office of her law firm. Reportedly the Sparks will be playing some exhibition games in the state and you can reference the website or go to the WNBA to learn more. It’s kind of neat to have two individuals with direct connections to Williston involved in key positions with the major cage programs in Los Angeles. Former Coyote Phil Jackson is guiding his Lakers in the playoffs against the Utah Jazz. We’ll keep an eye on the programs and pass along information as it becomes available. CLOSER TO HOME From the WSC campus we can tell you work continues on the new baseball facility on campus. Work will continue through the summer on this major project, with the facility expected for use by the Tetons in the near future. Once we learn more about this facility you will be the first to hear. ANFINSON/QUAMME AUTHOR BOOK David Anfinson and Ken Quamme have co-authored a book entitled “IT Essentials: PC Hardware and Software Companion Guide,” published by Cisco Press. Quamme also informed us about the success of a number of WSC students. BLOTKSY TO CHEER AT NDSU Brooke Blotsky, the daughter of Randy and Kim Blotsky of Williston, recently took part in a tryout camp for the cheerleading squad at North Dakota State University and made the cut. Having completed her freshman year at WSC, Blotsky will now be cheering for NDSU football, with Williston standout Tyler Jangula carrying the pigskin this fall. In addition, she will be cheering for the NDSU men’s basketball team after winning out in a field of 21 competitors. Blotsky attended Trinity Christian School and was a cheerleader for the Crusaders for three years. She plans to take care of her business requirements at NDSU, with a focus on photography, as she takes classes across the river at MSU-Moorhead. FIXEN JOINS UND CHEERLEADERS Meanwhile, Brittany Fixen, the daughter of Harlan and Monica Fixen of Williston has also earned a Division I cheerleading position with the Fighting Sioux hockey squad at the University of North Dakota. Also a freshman at WSC, the Williston High School graduate cheered for the Coyote hockey team for one season. She was among 15 candidates, including five returning cheerleaders, that competed for eight spots. Fixen told us she plans to pursue a degree in accounting at UND. SORENSON WORKS FOR MICROSOFT Adam Sorenson, a graduate of WSC, is employed by Microsoft of Fargo as a SharePoint Support Engineer. IMPRESSIVE VSPC SITE If you haven’t had an opportunity we invite you to take an evening drive to view the lights on the Virgil Syverson Performance Center in Harmon Park. The VSPC came to life with the 76th annual Band Day Festival and
Wheels are fun. Come see Justin and get yours turning.
once completed will serve as a mainstay for entertainment for years to come. Look for WSC activities to take place in this facility down the road. VERY SPECIAL THANKS In order to get the VSPC up and running for Band Day we must send out thanks to a number of individuals and companies. They include, but not limited to, Montana-Dakota Utilities, Agri Industries, Tofte Brothers Construction, Triangle Electric, Jamie TeSoro Masonry, along with Joe’s Digging. Without the cooperation of these fine folks it couldn’t have been accomplished. With the facility at about 90 percent completion, watch for further details as we move along. KEOGH SERVING COUNTRY Pat Keogh, the son of Katie and Frank Keogh of Williston, has deployed for duty in Iraq. A 2002 graduate of Williston High School, he went on to graduate from Gonzaga University prior to his active duty with the United States Army. Now serving as a First Lieutenant, his previous duty station found him in Germany, where he was able to continue playing hockey with the Manheim Longhorns. While at Gonzaga and during his time at WHS he laced up his skates, enjoying the sport of hockey. MEDORA MUSICAL NEAR We can tell you the 44th running of the Medora Musical is set to begin on May 30. Evening shows will run beginning at Pat Keogh of Williston is pictured, 3rd from 8:30 p.m. MDT. On the good news front left, taking part in a hockey game as a we can tell you the season will be member of the Manheim Longhorns while extended this time out with shows to run stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany. He has since deployed to Iraq. through Sept. 6. Randy Hatzenbuhler notes the month of September offers a great setting and they want to take advantage. Rehearsals began in Minneapolis last week and it’s only a matter of time before Medora comes to life. You can check out ww.medora.com to learn more about the exciting season ahead. SONS OF NORWAY EVENT Bjarne Lodge 4-086 Sons of Norway in Williston will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on June 28 at the Airport International Inn. Watch for complete details on this exciting event and we will pass along further details on our “Scoping It Out,” radio program featured each Friday on KEYZ 660. JAMES MEMORIAL ART CENTER You should make a special effort to drop by the James Memorial Center for the Arts to check out the work of two young talented Williston artists. Micah Westby and Brooks Griggs have an exhibition on display through May 30. A number of great programs take place at this facility throughout the entire year. For more information call 774-3601. DON WAHUS HONORED GUEST Now with a little more time on his hands, Don Wahus might get a chance for a little more golf. He will need to set aside June 11 as that’s the date set aside for the annual Mercy Medical Foundation Hackfest set for Eagle Ridge Golf Club. Wahus, who retired as director of the Mercy Recovery Unit, will be the honored guest for this year’s event. For registration information you can call 774-7404. MAKE-A-WISH ON SATURDAY Another golf tourney for you to consider taking part in is the annual MakeA-Wish Foundation outing set for Saturday at The Links of North Dakota. This field is limited and for registration information you can call 774-3710. The Make-A-Wish is a great outing to earn funds in support of a great project. RESUME TETON THUNDER With this all being said this is the final issue of Teton Thunder for this school year. This is the sixth issue and you can reference past issues on the WSC website at www.wsc.nodak.edu. We look forward to resuming Teton Thunder in the fall as this allows an opportunity to spread good news about students who have attended UNDW/WSC and gone on to do some good things. Until that time enjoy all the summer activities and we’ll see you around the bend. However, if you have any ideas or suggestions feel free to call them to our attention. He went on to say, “Our family vacations were always in conjunction with something veteran-related such as American Legion conventions, Drum and Bugle Corps competitions/parades, etc.” “I either attended or participated in many of the patriotic remembrance events held each year.” GETS LETTERS OF SUPPORT As a result, a number of those veterans in Williston were the ones who wrote my letters of recommendation to get me into the Air Force, noted Larvick. MILITARY INTRIGUED HIM Larvick pointed out the military had always intrigued him and his good friend Peter Rice. “I spent many hours in Junior High reading magazines about the latest in fighter planes,” said Larvick. “I came close to enlisting a number of times, but pursued a Bachelor’s degree instead.” That allowed him some extra time and the opportunity to attend college at home while also working in a field that led to his career path. SUPPORTS SYVERSON CENTER “I still get a chance to see Virgil Syverson when I come back to Williston as he was not only my high-school band teacher, he taught us in elementary school too,” said Larvick. “I’m a strong supporter of the performance center that Williston is building in his honor.” EDUCATION BACKGROUND After his graduation from WHS in 1979 Larvick went on to earn an A.A.S. degree in Business Administration from UND-W in 1981. That led to graduating with a B.B.A. in management from UND in 1984.
CREDITS EDUCATION HERE “I credit both Williston High School and UND-W with an educational foundation that has helped me with my career and my additional training and education. Without the foundation, the rest wouldn’t have been possible. FOND MEMORIES OF UND-W His time at UND-W provided numerous fond memories as he said, “I remember it as a great two years. The professors, due to the smaller class sizes, had time to help and provide career guidance.” Among those included “Mr. Rooks (accounting), Mr. Bervig (economics), Mr. White (public speaking), Mr. Davis Law, some of the names I remember.” REMEMBERS BERVIG’S WORDS “One thing I distinctly remember to this day: Mr. Bervig had us sing one of the principal theories of micro-economics, and I can still remember how it goes: ‘You maximize profits and you minimize loss, where the marginal revenue equals marginal cost.’ “I can’t believe I can still remember that!” GREAT SPORTS PROGRAMS Many of Larvick’s class members were from the smaller towns in the area, and he enjoyed making many new friends.“The sports programs were excellent, and I didn’t miss many chances to see a Teton basketball game (men or women). The men’s team had Brent Tininenko and Scott McPherson playing, classmates of mine from WHS, the best guard pairing ever.” IN THE PEP BAND Larvick continued, “The women’s basketball team went to Nationals both years, and both years I played trumpet in the pep band that played at all the games and traveled to Kansas to support the team in the national tourney.”
RECALLS WINTER CARNIVAL Another event that came to mind was when Larvick called BEGINS TO EARN WINGS Entering the Air Force in 1987, Larvick was well Lt. Colonel Jon A. Larvick waits as attention to, “I participated in student council activities, equipped to begin his rise in rank. He began with the Air President George H.W. Queen Coronation. “During that ceremony, I tried to do Force Institute of Technology, graduating in 1992 with an M.S. in Logistics Management. Next came a stop at the Air Command and the Carnac thing from Johnny Carson, but someone had filled the envelope Staff College where in 2000 he earned his Master of Military Operational up with baby powder. So, I tore the end of the envelope off, blew in the end to open it up, and got covered. I have to admit that was a great practical Arts and Science. Larvick moved on to the National War College where in 2006 he was joke.” IMPRESSED WITH CHANGES awarded an M.S. in National Security While it has been more than 25 Strategy.
