TRANSPORTATION COSTS ARE KILLING OUR SCHOOLS! Transportation funding for our rural schools is vital to their survival. Fuel costs have more than doubled from a few years ago. Some rural busing costs are over $10,000 per week! A ranking Republican recently said, "We're not touching busing because it is not required by law." We can do better! With the increase in fuel, maintenance and replacement costs, our schools are spending over $2.00 per mile while the state pays only $.73 cents per mile. Property tax payers have to make up the difference of $1.37. We can do better! Separate transportation funding would allow the precious education dollars to meet the true and direct educational needs of the kids and the classroom teachers, rather than having them go out the tailpipe of a bus. We can do better!

Picture of Success Philip Snyder is one of our volunteer persons that serves meals at our Prairieview site. He assists in delivering the noon meal and in serving the food to approximately 20 individuals who dine there. Philip was born and raised in Williston, graduating from Williston High School and the Adult Learning Center. He has 4 brothers and 1 sister. Philip enjoys being with and helping other people. He enjoys spending time with friends Alan and Sandy Steinberg and Lorna Johnstone. He also enjoys functions at his church, Emmanuel Free Lutheran, here in Williston. Philip is an "Outdoorsy" type; who finds time to go fishing, hunting and camping. Philip enjoys collecting match-box cars, doing plastic canvas, and putting together puzzles. His "plans" for the future are going on several cruises, seeing other countries, and seeing the Oak Ridge Boys and the Beach Boys in concert!! Because of Philip's willingness to volunteer for our meal services, we honor Philip Snyder as our October 2008 Volunteer of the Month.

Curves® of Williston is making Strides against Breast Cancer® Local Women’s Health Club Teams with American Cancer Society to Help Eliminate Breast Cancer. Curves® of Williston, part of the world’s largest franchise of fitness clubs, today announced it will be teaming with the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser during October Breast Cancer Awareness month to create awareness of breast cancer and raise funds to help eliminate it. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States. Curves of Williston has plenty of ways for everyone to get involved. New members who join between October 8 and 30 will pay only $25 for the service fee when they bring in a minimum $25 donation to the American Cancer Society or show proof of a current mammogram. “Curves of Williston is committed to helping the women in our community live healthier, stronger lives,” said Lorri. “Breast cancer will touch about one in every eight women, but breast cancer death rates are going down. This decline is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and having access to improved treatment. By encouraging women to get mammorgrams and rewarding them for doing so, we are helping to fight and even eliminate breast cancer in our lifetime. That’s something we take very seriously.” Curves of Williston is located at 2301 2nd Ave W. Soon to be in their new building. You can call 701-577-5000 for an appointment or any questions. Curves offers a 30-minute workout that combines strength training and sustained cardiovascular activity through safe and effective hydraulic resistance. Curves also offers a weight management program based on groundbreaking, scientifically proven method to raise metabolic rate and end the need for perpetual dieting. Founder Gary and Diane Heavin are considered the innovators of the express fitness phenomenon that has made exercise available to more then four million women, many of whom are in the gym for the first time. Gary Heavin is the author of numerous books including The New York Times bestseller Curves, which is revolutionizing America’s approach to dieting. With more than 10,000 locations in 57 countries, Curves is the world’s largest fitness franchise and the ninth largest of all franchise companies in the world. Mr. Sears and Mr. Roebuck got together because of a classified ad! In the late 1800’s, Richard W. Sears had a pretty good business going selling watches and needed someone to handle his watch repairs. He placed a classified ad and Alvah C. Roebuck got the job. That’s how the nation’s biggest retailer got started....through a classified ad! If you need a good helper, try advertising in our classifieds. Who knows? You may spark the beginning of something big!

There are so many parents, community citizens and businesses that have helped make our Western Jamboree a success. Not only did those parents show up to work the day of the Jamboree, they also donated their time and efforts to organize the games and supply what was needed for each event. Everyone’s help, no matter how big or small, made this day so much fun. WE APPRECIATE AND THANK YOU!

On hand for the baseball game included Zach Waitman, Ricky Waitman, Nevin Sorenson, Tyler Sorenson, Aaron Finders, Tim Eskelson, Ben Lemieux, Scott Moerike, Jason Overland, Chad Topp, Bryan McIntyre, Colby Epperson, Chris Leisy, Chad Nixey and Brandon Loveridge. The golf tournament, with proceeds earmarked to purchase equipment for the new Phil Rabon Field, accounted for 80 golfers and 20 teams. WSC alumni taking part included Darryl Markin of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Chad Topp, also of Moose Jaw, along with his wife Lana. Ben Lemieux of Whitefish, Mont., and Bryan McIntyre of Winnipeg, Manitoba, also ventured to join in the fun. Jim Vossler of Minot returned for the play on the course, as did Zach and Ricky Waitman, Jeremy Wright, Jason Overland, Curt Collings and Quentin Heller. Coach Heller reports the Tetons have pretty much wrapped up the fall campaign and are looking forward to spring baseball. He also notes plans call for WSC to be able to play some home games on the Phil Rabon Field next spring. Some dirt work needs to be completed, however the sod has all been laid and is taking shape. PAIL DAY OBSERVED OCT. 15 A special day of remembrance for pregnancy and infant loss (PAIL) is being planned. In conjunction with PAIL Day, a special event is set locally to begin at 6:45 p.m. next Wednesday (Oct. 15) at the gazebo in Harmon Park. This will provide for a time of reflection to remember babies who have been lost too soon, whether to miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss. Candles, through a grant from Thrivent, will be available at Harmon Park. If unable to attend, you can join people all over the world who are being asked to light a candle at 7 p.m. in an effort to get a wave of light across the globe to remember the little ones. Organizers tell us they welcome and encourage anyone who has suffered the loss of a baby at any time, to come and take part. This outing is not only for parents, but for grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and friends or anyone who has been affected by the loss of a child. You should also know about Just A Dream Away (JADA), which is a support group that meets at 7 p.m. the last Thursday of each month at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Following an election, Roger and Pearl Altenburg of Williston were installed as co-presidents, while Georgina Linghor of Williston was named vice president of the group. Plans are in the works for a new season that begins April 17-19 at the Berthold Senior Center. This publication covers the athletes at NDSU and provides articles covering a wide range of topics. Magazines are available locally at Books on Broadway and KEYZ Radio. JOHNSON REPEATS AT COLGATE SHOWDOWN Joel Swanson reports Williston native Eldon Johnson repeated as the state Colgate Country Showdown champion. That music contest event took place Saturday evening before a large crowd at the Four Bears Lodge & Casino with Ross Carpenter of Northern Plains Radio serving as the host for the evening. Johnson, who makes his home and music in the Fargo area these days, will now head to Flandreau, S.D., later this month seeking to repeat his regional title that landed him in Nashville for the finals last year. On the home front, Tina Flesness represented Economart and KEYZ 660 as the local champion at Four Bears and was among the nine entries representing radio stations from across the state. Swanson noted Flesness did a “great job,” and had a shot at the crown. We send out a Scope Salute to Johnson and wish him the best down the road. Kvamme can be reached at scopend@yahoo.com
