Cecil Daniel was born and raised in Wheelok township northwest of Ray. His parents were Joe and Rose Daniel. They had 8 children, 5 boys and 3 girls. Cecil was the oldes of the boys. The light in their family home was a kerosene lamp that stood in the center of the dining room table. The water pail stood on a shelf in the corner of the room with a dipper in it, and everyone drank from the same dipper! Cecil attended the Lough country school 2 miles from home. It was a one room school with all the grades 1 through 8 with one teacher. It was heated by a coal burning stove-it was first recess before it was warm enough that we could take off our jackets. We would each bring a big potato to school, carve our initial into the potato, lay it on top of the stove and by noon we each had a baked potato for dinner. Cecil has made many friends in his life, he says too numerous to mention (on his 95th birthday he received 96 cards!). His friendships have been made through the activities he's enjoyed in his lifetime. He is a member of the Catholic Church and its clubs, Williams County Soil Conservation-Board of Directors for 35 years! Also a membership in the local Moose Lodge, District 8 School Board, the Williams County Fair Board, and East Fork Township Board. Cecil worked at the Fort Peck Dam Spillway in 1937. He enjoyed farming in East Fork Township. In 1988, they opened a gravel pit on his farm. The material is mined, crushed, washed and sized and hauled to Williston for the Ready Mix Companies. At age 91, he rode a mule to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and came back up the next day. What a trip! This reminds us of his future plans-to keep on going, only at a slower pace! On his list of things he's enjoyed doing and where he's enjoyed meeting others is delivering meals on wheels. For several years and many seasons he helped us to get meals to the home-bound, also, for many seasons, Cecil has brought his tractor over here and kept our east parking lot clear of snow for us all. For these reasons we would like to honor Cecil Daniel as our First International Bank and Trust and Senior Center Volunteer of the month for June 2009! Thank you Cecil
