IN LOVING MEMORY

p1-9-25

of Robert “Goody” Godejohn. September 26, 1946 to August 11, 2008. We thank all the good people in our lives for your love and support during this sad time for our family. As we remember Robert’s birthday, we find comfort in these words. “You can shed tears that he is gone, or you can smile because he has lived. You can open your eyes and pray that he’ll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all he’s left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can remember him only that he is gone, or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can do what he’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.” Linda Godejohn, Mark and Lynn Skelton and Shelby, Marshall and Laurie Wendell, Jackson and Wyatt, Katie Godejohn.

THE FAMILY OF BERNICE DAHL wishes to thank all of the staff at Bethel Home for the wonderful care Mom received there. Special Thanks to Pastor April Peterson, Pastor Steve Anderson, and Pastor Betty from Bethel for all their visits. Heartfelt thanks go to Pastor April for her comforting words at the service, Lisa Hanson for the beautiful music and Gloria Dei Church for the delicious meal served after the service. We would also like to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, food, memorials and flowers. Our family thanks you for your presence, kind words, and thoughtfulness. God Bless You All. Having retired from his high school position this spring, Parker wasted little time making the shift to his new post at WSC. While starting from scratch, Parker has assembled a concert choir at

their responsibilities to venture into a four-year program. “It is so important to have both band and choir available,” said Parker.

FOUNDATION DRIVING FORCE While the new program is being offered in conjunction with WSC and the WSC Foundation, Parker credits the foundation as the driving force. “Terry Olson has just been great with us, while also providing scholarship funds and we are on the move here,” said Parker. While starting from scratch, last year the WSC Choir consisted of four students. “That’s a quartet, not a choir,” said Parker. SAME AS ATHLETIC PROGRAMS Parker likens his role to being a coach working with scholarships in recruiting and attracting new students to campus. “It’s a lot less expensive for a couple years here,” said Parker. At the same time he pointed out that the programs are not only for those interested in music, but for those who have a “desire.” By filling a big void, Parker points out the music programs can be “very beneficial both to WSC and the WSC choir students Jay Borseth, Brittney O’Neill, Ella Van Berkom, Leah Martin, community.”

WSC with 8 students taking part. His plans call to double the number of students to 16 for the second semester, as he spends time on campus recruiting choir members. In addition, Parker is working to have a concert band in place for the second semester. IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS Parker notes the program is very important for students who would like to go into music and be able to transfer. “They can have what they need when they leave here and transfer,” said Sasha Panasuk, Bekka Ryan and Carrissa Knutson gather around the piano as Parker. In doing so, they will be ready for instructor Herb Parker Jr. leads them through a vocal session. Not pictured is Jenalyn Seiger.

Alumni being asked to provide information

Terry Olson Executive Director WSC Foundation

Greetings form the Williston State College Foundation! I am happy to say that our first Scholarship Celebration was a success overall. As always, I would like to have had better attendance from both donors and students, but we served almost 200 people and I am confident it will grow each year. The celebration was well received by the donors that attended, and I appreciated their positive comments.

Attention alumni! We are working with two companies, one to update our database, and another to produce a hard copy alumni directory. Harris Connect, the trusted company that has been chosen to produce our alumni directory, will soon contact you via email, postal service or telephone. Please take the time to answer their questions and update your personal information. It seems that alumni data management gets put on the back burner every year. No More. We hope complete the directory by the end of this school year. A special thanks to Carmin Klein and Tom Kvamme for their help in this important task. Until next time…Go Tetons!

WAHUS RECEIVES STATE AWARD Don Wahus, a Williston Licensed Addiction Counselor, was recently presented with a leadership recognition award at the annual Alcohol and Substance Abuse Summit in Bismarck.

This award was presented by the North Dakota Addiction Counselors Association and the North Dakota Addiction Treatment Providers Coalition. The award was in recognition of his 36 years of outstanding contributions to the addiction counseling field and his dedication to helping people in the state of North Dakota. This annual award is presented to an individual meeting criteria for leadership in the field. Wahus now works in private business with his wife Deb managing their firm, Wahus Consulting, Inc. We send out a Scope Salute to Don on being selected for this honor. SORENSON GEARS UP FOR EVENT A reminder for you to consider making a pledge to help support the effort of Williston State College graduate Phil Sorenson. Sorenson will be competing in an upcoming half-marathon and through pledges he will be raising funds in the battle against melanoma. You can click on to www.scopingitout.org and look for the reference which will take you to the site. TARGET FIELD IS NEW TWINS HOME Last week we told you about Phil Rabon Field coming to life in Williston, honoring a man who has given a lot to WSC and the community. Perhaps some of you missed it, but the new name of the outdoor facility being constructed for the Minnesota Twins is Target Field. This naming is a little different story. Huge corporate funds come into play in purchasing the tag and as a result that’s the name that will brand the field for years to come. This blends in nicely with the Target Center, located in downtown Minneapolis. Target has been around for a long time, much like the Twins and this should prove to be a good partnership. MOVING OUT OF THE METRODOME We’re old enough to have fond memories of the days when all we heard was the need for a domed stadium for the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. Now, some 20 years later, the spin is reversed as the time spent at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome is nearing an end. The Twins will have a new outdoor stadium, while the Vikings work to battle the elements once again. The idea behind a dome was to assure fans who travel a long distance a game would be played. Now, it will be a gamble for fans from this part of the country to venture to the Twin Cities. REMEMBERING METROPOLITAN STADIUM We had the privilege to take in numerous games at the old Metropolitan Stadium, while also spending numerous years covering the fortunes of the Vikings. After viewing the final game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night, this jogged some fond memories of being on hand for the final baseball and football games at the Met. Over the years we have had the pleasure to meet New York players including Roger Maris, Moose Skowron and Whitey Ford. Going even further back, Don Larsen, who hurled a no-hitter for the Yanks in a World Series game was married in my home town of Benson, Minn. Thinking back to that final Vikings outdoor football game in Bloomington, we recall fans going wild following the final football game and it proved to be a near riot. That’s perhaps why New York brought in a huge police force for the finale.

WSC’s enrollment picture is improving Our official credit headcount for fall 2008 increased to 850 students on the official enrollment date of September 23, 2008. WSC’s 2008 fall headcount increased by 16% from the official fall 2007 headcount of 731. This resulted from the hard work of our student services and distance education staff as well as the efforts of our faculty, staff, and administrators. The WSC Foundation played a major role by increased support of grants and scholarships and by starting a new grant program for regional dual Dr. Joe McCann credit students. WSC has just established a new WSC President enrollment management director position to focus more effort on student recruitment and marketing. Roxane Molinari has been on the job as the new Director for Enrollment Management for three weeks now. This investment by the college will bear fruit in the future. Williston State College faces a number of immediate challenges including the twin effects of the MonDak Region’s hot labor market and a decrease in the number of high school graduates over the past ten years. Community colleges are intimately tied to the region they serve. The oil well drilling boom has brought about significant changes at Williston State College. To thrive, WSC needs not only to change with the boom but to embrace the change and to enhance our capacity to serve our students, to attract students, to prepare them for opportunities to stay in the MonDak Region, and to serve as a cultural center for this Region. We are rapidly expanding WSC’s Petroleum Safety and Technology Center’s (PS&TC) infrastructure and capacity to train new hires and provide ongoing training of incumbent oil field employees. We could not have accomplished this feat without the support of the North Dakota Legislature, Governor’s office, the Williston Star Fund, Williston City Commission, and the WSC Foundation. However, our business partners

in the petroleum production industry, through contributions of equipment, services, expertise, and valuable professional time on the PS&TC advisory committee, made it happen!! Over the past four years the number of oil field employees trained increased from less than 50 to over 4,200 annually for the period July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. During that same period, there was drastic decline of 23% in the number of WSC students, who take credit courses in preparation for transfer to a university, or who are pursuing an associate degree or certificate. WSC’s enrollment decreased from a record 947 in the fall of 2005 to 731 by the fall of 2007 while the percentage of male students dipped from 42% in 2000 to 26% of our student enrollment in 2007. WSC must seek the resources to offer construction industry education, to expand our capacity to educate diesel technicians, to be responsive to labor market needs, and to increase our student recruitment to find students who will be the petroleum engineers, geologists, managers, entrepreneurs, agri-businessmen, farmers, educators, technicians, physicians, and other professionals direly needed in the MonDak region. We look forward to an increased role in Senator Dorgan’s Energy Corridor project and to the next North Dakota Legislative session to assist in finding and educating the employees for our burgeoning economy, while playing a larger role in increasing the quality of life for residents of the MonDak region. This is truly a time that is filled with opportunity for Williston State College, and more importantly, for our students as well as the vitality of MonDak region. Next issue I’ll focus on the profile of the students and trainees at WSC this fall.

PARKER Continued from Page 1 PEP BAND IS BEING FORMED With already 8 students in place for the concert band Parker hopes to have up to 20 participants. His plans also call to form a pep band to help with athletic events, to add some flavor at The Well. While this will be a voluntary program, Parker notes The Well is a great place to play. HAS PLANS TO MARCH ON For Parker, following his retirement after 27 years heading up the choral department at Williston High School, his experience also included four years of directing the freshman band from 1987-91. His band experience also goes back to his days at Minot State College. As a matter of fact, Parker is looking forward to a 40-year reunion of the Minot State College Beaver Marching Band this weekend. This band participated in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., and Parker expects a large number to be on hand for the reunion. BEGAN CAREER IN MINOT Having graduated from Minot Model High School in 1965, Parker went on to graduate from Minot State College 1969. He then spent his first five years as the vocal director at Minot High School from 1969-74. Following that he took one year to attend graduate school at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

PLAYS IN NIGHT CLUBS Parker then made a career decision to leave teaching and was off to Oklahoma City where he played music in night clubs from 1975-79. After that period it was time to return home and resume teaching band and choir at Minot Bishop Ryan, beginning in 1979. MAKES FINAL MOVE HERE Parker had an initial interview in Williston, only to have a follow-up interview that led him here permanently in 1981. It was while playing a nightclub in Tulsa he received a call from WHS Principal Del Easton. Easton knew his father Herb Parker Sr., and was very impressed dating way back to 1973 when Herb Jr. had brought his Minot High School Choir to Williston for a performance. “He remembered that performance,” said Herb Jr., in reference to being considered by Easton. APPRECIATIVE OF SUPPORT Now ready to make a move to the college ranks, Parker looks back and notes he has really appreciated the support of the school administration and the community over those years. “They all have been very supportive,” said Parker. He looks for that same support to be there as he tackles establishing a solid music program at Williston State College. Kvamme can be reached at scopend@yahoo.com
