The University Center welcomed in the new year with a couple of cosmetic modifications, including the foyer restrooms and the Chick-fil-A restaurant in the Plaza Food Court. UTA renovated the restroom facilities closest to Bowling and Billiards and the Bluebonnet Ballroom during winter break. The $200,000 changes include a complete overhaul of the counter tops, tile work, fixtures and partitions to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards, said David Albart, University Center Operations Director. The ADA currently outlines strict regulations concerning public restroom accessibility for urinals, toilet stalls, grab bars, floor space and counter and faucet heights. “Additionally, the restrooms were starting to look pretty dated, as they have not been worked on since they were installed in 1987,” he said. The new look caught the eyes of several students including political science sophmanaging-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu News Editor ................................. omore Chris Corbelic, who noticed the changes immediately. “It’s a lot nicer,” he said. “It smells good, and it looks good.” Not yet completed, the face of the Chick-fil-A restaurant remains covered by a simple blue board displaying the restaurant’s dining options to hide the remodeling. The update began Dec. 15 and should be finished Jan. 26. The new look includes updated tiles and signs to match the new color scheme for all Chick-fil-A restaurants. “It’s going to mimic going to an actual Chick-fil-A,” retail operations manager Raj Surinarain said. Along with the face-lift, the restaurant also received new kitchen equipment, including a waffle-fry fryer and dispenser, sandwich dispenser and ice dispenser. Chick-fil-A employee Koushik Sadish said the renovations haven’t stopped him from serving food, and everything is business as usual. Aside from these changes, Albart said there are no future renovations planned for the UC.

through the lens Associate professor continues show production to air independent filmmakers’ work By Johnathan Silver Contributor to The Shorthorn
Unique. Expressionistic. Compelling. Such are the stories told by North Texas filmmakers for area viewers through a camera lens via KERA’s “Frame of Mind,” said Bart Weiss, art and art history associate professor. The show, Weiss said, though it has been around for years, initially experienced rough times after original producers left for other projects. But Weiss stayed on and has continued producing the show. He said the show has “done well” despite the early years. The program showcases works from independent Texas filmmakers on a broad range of topics. “Sometimes they’ll be documentaries, dramas, music videos and expressionistic things,” Weiss said. Weiss uses a 24-hour video race to attract content for the show. During the race, each participating team uses a theme, prop, location and dialogue that comes together in a 5-minute or less short film. All production takes place
within 24 hours. But for film senior Daniel Laabs, whose piece “Deep Ellum in Passing” was recently featured on “Frame of Mind,” the opportunity came from the producer’s discretion. In Laabs’ case, the producer is also his professor. Originally, in order to avoid favoritism accusations, Weiss was reluctant to include any work from UTA students in the program, but he made an exception for Laabs’ film, which he considered well done. “Bart called me and said, ‘Hey, we’re gonna do Deep Ellum,’” Laabs said. “I got excited and recorded it.” Deep Ellum, an East Dallas art and entertainment district, has fallen on rough times over the years, resulting in the collapse of area businesses. As such, part of Laabs’s motivation for making the short film was personal. “I was part of a band that played Deep Ellum,” Laabs said. “My friends and I thought it was sad what was happening in the area. Clubs were closing week by week.”
Three weeks of the project went toward filming of the swiftly diminishing cultural district. Although Laabs hasn’t seen a career boost by his film’s inclusion on the show, having the experience on his resume remains a plus. “It’s really a special show because there’s nothing like it around here,” he said. Weiss had advice for prospective filmmakers submitting work for the show. He said their work must be “fresh, interpretive, and show things that wouldn’t otherwise be shown on public television.” Meg Fullwood, KERA’s public relations manager, called “Frame of Mind” a “wonderful series” that highlights the work of North Texas filmmakers. “While the themes may vary episode to episode, the work is always unique and compelling,” she said. “KERA is pleased to work with the Video Association of Dallas in producing this series and sharing the voice and vision of local filmmakers with our community.” Johnathan Silver news-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu

UTA-Hosts to have welcome back mixer on Thursday UTA-Hosts is giving a welcome back mixer from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Bowling and Billiards in the University Center. The mixer is for UTA mentors, mentees and upperclassmen who are considering becoming mentors and for first semester students who are interested in becoming mentees. The mentors are group members who give advice to those (the mentees) who want
to learn more about college life. “The welcome back mixer is a way that mentors and mentees can regroup and get together,” said Molly Alfers UTAHosts staff coordinator. The mixer will have fun activities such as board games, bowling and video games. The social is a way to show that UTA-Hosts is an organization that matches mentors with incoming students.
“If you want to become a mentor there is no set time — it is what you’re willing to give your mentee,” said Jennifer Lopez, UTA Hosts student coordinator. Two completed semesters, a minimum 2.0 GPA and the ability to attend training sessions are interested mentors’ requirements.

Scouting the Lumberjacks (11-4, 3-0) Six-foot-nine senior forward Matt Kingsley is third in the conference in scoring at 18.3 points per game. Senior forward Josh Alexander is also in the top 25, scoring 14.7 points a contest. In their current four-game winning streak, the Lumberjacks are outscoring opponents by an average of 14.3 points. Scouting the Mavericks (9-7, 2-1) In the three conference games, the Mavs are averaging 6.33 more assists per game than turnovers, which is tops in the league. Sophomore guard Jeremy Smith is averaging a team-high four assists per game in conference. Saturday’s 100-point performance was the first time the team reached the century mark since November 2007 against Texas Southern (102-72). Inside the Series Unveiling of the 2008 Southland Conference Tournament championship banner takes place before the game. This meeting marks the 54th time the two schools have met. Stephen F. Austin owns the overall series lead 27-26. The Lumberjacks defeated the Mavericks last year at Texas Hall 71-49, the worst defeat at home since 2003 and snapped the Mavs’ school-record 17 straight home wins. SFA brings in a four-game winning streak. UTA is 4-0 at home this season. — Stephen Peters

the Activities Building, now known as the MAC. It’s been four years since this approval and absolutely no ground breaking has begun, nor has there been a definitive statement as to where the arena will be built. From unconfirmed sources, the City of Arlington and the university are at odds as to where to build it — one entity wants it in downtown Arlington, the other on campus, somewhere. Heck, an official announcement hasn’t even been given as to when the arena is coming. We, and by we, I mean UTA, have been told numerous times that there will be an announcement for an announcement for the arena, coming soon. Sounds like a Mike Jones verse. Instead, we get announcements such as ‘Tier 1 status could take 10 years’ or ‘Diversity fountain coming to library mall.’ I still haven’t met an average student who knows or, in
fact, even cares about Tier 1 status and what it means. And this is no knock on the College of Engineering, but they get brand new buildings for research and new classrooms and new faculty offices — we’ve got to keep that faculty tenured. It’s obvious I chose the wrong UT System school to attend. Romo and the heads at UTSA seem to have their ears keen on what students say and want. UTA, on the other hand, seems to care too much about looking pretty and having great qualifiers next to its name. Leave that up to TCU . But as it stands now, UTA is the lone charter member of the Southland Conference to not field a football team. Just keep it relative — we’re undefeated since 1986. — Stephen Peters is a journalism senior and can be heard weekdays from 7-8 a.m. on “Sports Banter in the Morning” on radio.uta.edu.

Obama’s inaugural speech a quiet call to arms for Americans The new president rallies Americans to be accountable for actions of the nation. the associated press
WASHINGTON (AP) — He spoke with gravity of the troubled times at hand and with confidence of the possibilities ahead, giving subtle nod to the groundbreaking nature of his ascendance to the presidency. Barack Obama used his inaugural address Tuesday to sketch a quiet and thoughtful portrait of the nation as it is, and as it should be. And then he placed the onus for moving from the realities of today to the promise of the future squarely on the nation at large. The burden of hope, of change, is not simply the president’s, he reasoned, but a shared mission given to all Americans. “Our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed,” Obama said. “Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.” Obama spoke of a “new era of responsibility” and of “our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.”

It was both a call for personal accountability, and a repudiation of the Bush years. The expectations could not have been higher for Obama, known for his eloquence as a speaker, and he answered them with a speech that was both compact and powerful. Only time will tell if the words resonate in the nation’s memory as long as his acts in office are certain to do. Rather than a collection of sound bites, his 18-minute address was a set piece, meant to be listened to from start to finish. Without overreaching for soaring rhetoric, he spoke first to the challenges at hand. “At these moments,” he told the nation, “America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.” Unlike John F. Kennedy’s inaugural, which spoke of a blaring trumpet that summons the nation to service, Obama’s was a quiet call to arms. In his unflinching description of the challenges ahead, he echoed Franklin D. Roosevelt, who spoke in his first inaugural of grim “common difficulties” that the country would conquer together.

Bush bids goodbye at Capitol grounds After President Barack Obama’s inauguration, Bush and his family head to Texas. the associated press
WASHINGTON (AP) — With one last handshake with President Barack Obama, George W. Bush boarded a helicopter on Tuesday at the Capitol and began his postpresidential life, closing a two-term administration marked by war, recession and the biggest terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Vice President Joe Biden gave Bush a brief salute as the chopper left the Capitol grounds and headed to Andrews Air Force Base, flying over the throngs of supporters who came to Washington for the historic inauguration of the 44th president. The unpopular incumbent and Obama, who has ascended to rockstar status even as he faces daunting and international challenges, stood with their wives on the Capitol steps smiling and laughing. If there were any hard feelings between the incoming Democrat and outgoing Republican, they weren’t apparent in the Bush send-off at the base of the helicopter. The two men hugged and clasped hands one final time, sealing the transfer of power. Bush actually began the first few minutes as an ex-president listening to a musical prelude at the swearing-in ceremony. Obama had not yet taken the oath of office, but while the musicians played, he

became president at noon EST, according to the Constitution. Some in the crowd, weary of Bush’s eight years in office, booed the president when the large viewing screens near the World War II Memorial flashed an image of the exiting president arriving at the swearing-in. Moments later, rounds of cheers welled up as the same screens showed the incoming first lady, Michelle Obama, and her two daughters, Sasha and Malia. Unfazed by his unpopularity, Bush smiled and waved throughout the day’s activities. He blew a kiss out the window of his limousine
as he left the White House with Obama. After the inauguration ceremony, some in the crowd waved at the aircraft in the sky. Others, however, cheered when they heard a television broadcaster announce, “George Bush is no longer president of the United States.” Still others in the crowd, broke into chants of “Na-nana-nah, hey, hey, hey, goodbye.” Earlier in the day, a cheerful Bush and his wife, Laura, hosted Obama and his wife, Biden and his wife, Jill, and lawmakers for coffee in the Blue Room of the White House.
