More than $1 million in combined grants will help improve cancer therapy, treatments and diagnoses. BY BRYAN BASTIBLE The Shorthorn staff

Three university professors and their associates are on their way to helping patients with the No. 2 leading cause of malignancy-related mortality in men — prostate cancer. With more than $1 million combined in grants, some of the research the professors have been working on includes designing a testing device, developing prostate cancer treatments and improving diagnosis.

TESTING DEVICE Electrical engineering professor J.C. Chiao and bioengineering assistant professor Kytai Nguyen headed a team that created a microdevice that tracks how cancerous cells spread from the tumor to other places in the body. “The goal for our research is to use a patent-pending device ... to identify and quantify the important factors in prostate cancer metastasis,” Chiao said. “The results will be used to find potential targets in cancer therapy.” Chiao and Nguyen’s team received a:FDDLE@:8K@FE three-year $205,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to further their research developments, and with the help from collaborators in UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Urology depart-

Dang said he’s paid more than $1,000 through the course of the four years for the game cost and two expansion packs, which retailed $40 a piece when they were first released, and the $15 monthly membership fee. The game’s social aspects keep Coker coming back. He said he enjoys spending time with friends whether it be through killing monsters or other players in battle grounds or even just sitting around chatting in a city. Most WoW players form guilds, like teams, which allow the members to bond even closer under a motto, a crest and even a guild charter. While some groups get together at a coffee shop or at the basketball courts, he and his friends like to hang out in the game. “It’s somewhere where I can go and hang out with friends,” he said. “Usually there is someone on I can talk to about any number of topics, and we all show interest in what each other have to talk about.” WoW has received much

In 2007, a Chinese teen threw gasoline on his classmate and lit him on fire, saying he did it because he transformed into a “Fire Mage,” one of the character classes within the game. Dang said he doesn’t face too much ridicule. When he mentions the game in class, most people think it’s cool or interesting. The only people that tease him about his hobby are within the gaming community and the university’s group Gamers on Campus. He said they consider it an easy game for babies because of the colorful aesthetic and accessibility to anyone. “I know they’re just joking,” Dang said. “They don’t say it to hurt.” When school isn’t in session, Coker spends around 40 hours a week playing WoW and about six when classes start. even though he said other people might let the game become their life and eventually lose jobs or drop out of school. “WoW gets a lot of bad rap for that and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about it,” he said. “People who desire to escape from reality already have a problem, they just find WoW to be a really good source of escape.” Coker attributes his selfcontrol to his family, who taught him to limit his playtime and that friends, family and health are more important than video games. While some people think of WoW players as loners, Dang said the game has helped his social skills. He said he has become more open and acts like himself. Architecture junior and WoW player Daniel Glenn said he’s even gotten his friends to play along with him. He said sometimes male players create female characters, but he prefers not to run

Coker said people who play the game are labeled as weirdos because of a lack of understanding about the game. “You can’t just go up to someone and talk about what items dropped from a raid last night,” he said. “They wouldn’t know what you are talking about, but you can always tell someone about what plants you just put in your garden or what was interesting about that book you read.” At this point, Dang said he has no plans to quit WoW. He’ll continue to attend every raid night that his guild plans and be in those same back lines as the big time healer of his group.

Hearing could lead to exoneration in rape case AUSTIN — The mother of a man who died in prison while serving 25 years for a rape that DNA tests now show he didn’t commit tearfully pleaded Thursday for a judge to overturn his conviction. Timothy Cole died in prison in 1999 from complications from asthma at the age of 38 after years of insisting he was innocent.

Inmate escapes from transport company PHILADELPHIA — A private prison transportation company lost an attempted-murder suspect somewhere between Florida and Pennsylvania, leading to a search for the cuffed and shackled inmate and drawing complaints that such companies are poorly regulated. The discovery Thursday was at least the second escape in six months involving an inmate being moved by Prisoner Transportation Services of America LLC. Still, industry critics said the major issue is not escapes, but mistreatment of inmates and poor traveling conditions.

New jobless claims jump more than expected to 626K the associated Press

WASHiNGToN — New jobless claims jumped far more than expected last week in an already dismal labor market, and there’s no relief in sight for workers as mass layoffs persist. The labor department reported Thursday that the number of newly jobless workers seeking benefits rose last week to a seasonally adjusted 626,000, from the previous week’s upwardly revised figure of 591,000.

The latest total is far more than analysts’ expectations of 583,000. That’s also the highest since october 1982, when the economy was in a steep recession, though the work force has grown by about half since then. The numbers reflect the large spate of layoffs announced last month by companies from all sectors of the economy, including Caterpillar inc., Pfizer inc. and Microsoft Corp. The

layoffs continued Thursday with cosmetics maker estee lauder Cos. saying its fiscal second-quarter profit fell 30 percent and it plans to begin a four-year restructuring plan that will include cutting 2,000 staffers, or 6 percent of the work force. The company will also continue its hiring freeze. economists expect the government to issue a grim report Friday that will show the unemployment rate rose to 7.5 percent in January, up

from 7.2 percent in december. That would be the highest rate in 17 years. The housing slump and financial crisis have hammered spending by businesses and consumers, sending the economy into a recession that is expected to continue until at least the second half of this year. The recession’s impact was visible in other economic data Thursday. Factory orders fell by 3.9 percent in december, the Commerce

department said, a record fifth straight drop. For all of 2008, orders for everything from autos to computers to food rose by only 0.4 percent, the weakest showing since orders actually fell by 1.8 percent in 2002. Meanwhile, many retailers reported dismal January sales. The malaise crossed the spectrum of retailing, from department store chains to teen clothing chains.

Sri Lanka rejects cease fire request COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka’s prime minister rejected calls for a cease-fire Thursday from donor countries worried by reports of growing civilian casualties in the South Asian nation’s civil war, instead demanding the Tamil Tiger rebels’ unconditional surrender. Sri Lankan forces captured the rebels’ biggest sea base, effectively cutting off their supply point and pushing them to the brink of defeat.

iSlAMABAd, Pakistan — A suicide bomber blew himself up among worshippers streaming toward a Shiite Muslim mosque in central Pakistan, killing 24 people and wounding dozens more. The attack in the city of dera Ghazi Khan on Thursday risks sparking sectarian fury in a country already battling rising militancy along the Afghan border and tension with india over the Mumbai terrorist attacks. The bomb detonated as a crowd approached the mosque for an evening prayer ceremony. Television footage showed bystanders and emergency workers trying frantically to help victims lying in the darkened street. Athar Mubarak, the city police chief, said the bomb contained metal balls and nails. As well as the 24 dead, another 40 people were wounded, he said. “evidence collected from the spot indicates that a suicide bomber blew himself up in the crowd,” Mubarak said.

BAGHdAd — Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s allies swept to victory over Shiite religious parties during last weekend’s provincial elections in iraq — a rousing endorsement of his crackdown on extremists, according to official results released Thursday. The impressive showing, which must be certified by international and iraqi observers, places alMaliki in a strong position before parliamentary elections late this year and could bolster U.S. confidence that it can begin withdrawing more of its 140,000 troops. The results were a major blow to iraq’s biggest Shi-

ite religious party — the Supreme islamic iraqi Council — which trailed in every Shiite province including its base in the holy city of Najaf. Still, the margin of victory in a number of Shiite provinces was narrow, indicating the prime minister’s supporters will have to cut deals with their rivals in order to govern. And al-Maliki’s Coalition of the State of law gained little traction in Sunni areas, suggesting that sectarian divisions still play a major role in iraqi politics. Al-Maliki is himself a Shiite from a religious party, but his bloc ran on a platform against sectarianism.

WASHiNGToN — lawmakers reacted angrily Thursday when told that food makers and state safety inspectors are allowed to keep tests results secret. That keeps federal health officials in the dark even when products have been contaminated by salmonella or other dangerous bacteria. “i’d like to see some people go to jail,” Sen. Patrick leahy, d-Vt., said during a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing on a deadly salmonella outbreak linked to a Georgia peanut plant that has sickened more than 550 people and killed at least eight. Federal law does not require reporting of contaminants if companies receive private test results showing them or states find them in their inspections, said dr. Stephen Sundlof, food safety director for the Food and drug Administration. “That’s one of the very serious loopholes we need to plug,” said Sen. Saxby Chambliss, a Georgia republican and the committee’s ranking minority member. Sundlof defended the FdA’s handling of the current outbreak, but also noted gaps in the country’s food safety system that hamper the agency’s efforts. The FdA learned only

weeks ago that the Peanut Corp. of America had received a series of private tests dating back to 2007 showing salmonella in their products from the Georgia plant, but later shipped the items after obtaining negative test results. “We would like to have as much information as possible” from food makers, Sundlof said. leahy said food manufacturers should face possible jail time and other tough penalties to beef up compliance with federal food safety rules. “Fines won’t do it,” he said. Sundlof pointed out that a federal criminal investigation of the outbreak is under way. Also Thursday, the department of Agriculture suspended Peanut Corp. from participating in government contract programs for at least a year. Secretary Tom Vilsack also removed Stewart Parnell, president of the company, from USdA’s Peanut Standards Board. “The actions of (Peanut Corp. of America) indicate that the company lacks business integrity and business honesty, which seriously and directly hinders its ability to do business with the federal government,” said david Shipman, Acting Administrator of USdA’s Agricultural Marketing Service.

Going for the Title After topping Arizona, team has chance to win championship By roBerT MATSon Contributor to The Shorthorn

two weeks ago, the wheelchair basketball team returned from a tournament in tucson, Ariz., with a perfect 4-0 record, which included avenging a loss to Arizona earlier in the season. the weekend’s success gives the team the chance to win the southern Conference championship this weekend in tuscaloosa, Ala. the Movin’ Mavs had to win the rematch with Arizona to even the season series with the Wildcats to 1-1. since letting the lead slip away in the first game and losing 64-62 at texas Hall in November, the team had been looking forward to its chance for revenge. this time, they left with no doubt who the reigning conference champions were. An 87-71 thrashing in Arizona’s own backyard was a statement the team had been waiting to make. Head coach Doug Garner was pleased to see his team respond to the challenge and increase its focus on the court. “I think the way we are playing now is a better reflection of who we are as a team,” Garner said. “We have been much better about keeping focused for a full 40-minute game, rather than having lulls off and on.” Another reason the team has picked up its play has been the increase in scoring and leadership from sophomore Ian pierson. Garner encouraged pierson to

be more aggressive with his offensive game. “once coach gave me the green light to look for my shot, my confidence definitely increased,” said pierson, who averaged 28 points per game in the Arizona tournament. “We played the game we wanted to play this time and know what we want to do when we play them again this weekend.” team defense was another point of emphasis Garner stressed to his players during practice. “We have been refining and adjusting our defense throughout the season,” Garner said. “our intensity and focus on that end is something we have been working on.” the third and deciding game between UtA and Arizona takes place at 3 p.m. today at the University of Alabama campus, and players and coaches expect to be up against a determined team. tomas Lobo, who joined the Movin’ Mavs during the winter break after transferring from oklahoma state University, said he understands Arizona will want to prove the first game was no fluke, but expects UtA to be ready, too. “I expect us to win,” Lobo said . “If we play our game, we will win. If we win, we lock up a 3 seed in the [National] tournament and that would be nice.” Although new to the program, Lobo said he realizes the pressure and expectations of playing at UtA. “We have never not won the

Faculty/StaFF Professor returns from first federal health subcommittee meeting in D.C. mittee members attended a half dozen briefings in order to inform them on what is being done to promote psychological health right now. The report given to subcommittee members stressed two overlapping signature issues in military mental health: post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Both can have varying effects depending on the person and its severity. Quick commented on the possible rise in military

suicides. “What’s important to find is what is not visible,” Quick said. Quick also attended the Defense Health Board meeting in December, where he had the opportunity to meet the core members of the board. He will attend one more meeting in March before they lay out plans for the rest of the two-year appointment.

conclusion. “Our task today is to re-evaluate the way we are living so that our children and grandchildren can also have access to the wonderful resource the natural world provides.” The event began with former President’s Sustainability Committee co-chair Jeff Howard’s analysis of the university’s carbon footprint, using factors from a set of behaviors to determine its effect on the environment. He said the university produces 89,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, an equivalent of 6,461 pounds per person. He urged the audience to take their own carbon footprint seriously, because even if carbon emissions ended, the climate would continue to change for years. David Hopman, landscape architecture assistant professor, praised the university’s green roof, the project on top of the Life Science Building where students use vegetation to help lessen energy and en-

vironmental concerns. He presented some ideas that his class developed to counter the lack of green space on campus and water runoff problems. Allan Saxe, political science associate professor, began his presentation with a disclaimer that he would say some things people might find controversial. He identified what he called recycling hypocrisies, like wasting water to wash a glass jar or emissions from a truck gathering recyclables. He said that not every environmental effort is flawless. He also explained the Pickens Plan, billionaire and former oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens’ plan to establish a sustainable energy source — specifically wind energy. Saxe said he agreed with Pickens’ idea that the country first needs a “transition fuel,” like natural gas. “I wish the Democrats, the Republicans and the president, in this stimulus bill, would spend billions of dollars on some kind of new energy source for automobiles,” he said. Saxe’s presentation concluded with the most heated discussion of the day, as the

audience discussed natural gas’ environmental consequences of relying on unsustainable energy sources. The learning sessions concluded with Dolphin Blue CEO Tom Kemper’s presentation, “Greening the Economy,” which had it’s own solution to climate change and the economic crisis. Kemper showed a viral video called “Carrotmob,” which presented organized spending to force businesses to offer more environmentally friendly products and services. “This is about human existence for the most part. It’s about the continuation of our species having some reasonable modicum of life that is close — maybe even better than what we have,” he said. “We need young minds that aren’t indoctrinated with this old, worn out, ridiculous behavior.” The evening ended with a roundtable discussion in the Lone Star Auditorium with representatives from the university and Metroplex.

IMPROVING PROSTATE CANCER DIAGNOSIS

Organizational behavior professor James Quick, who was appointed to the Department Of Defense Psychological Health External Advisory Subcommittee, returned from his first meeting in Washington, D.C., last week since being appointed in December. The subcommittee focuses on the prevention and treatment of problems soldiers experience after returning from combat. Quick and other subcom-

ment and Urologic Oncology Clinic, conduct studies using the device that has the ability to predict metastasis risk for prostate cancer patients. “It is estimated one out of six men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime,” Chiao said. “So, an efficient way for metastasis prediction will save many people’s lives.”

PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT Nguyen and collaborators at UT Southwestern Medical Center are working on a treatment method that can effectively improve drug therapies that will only kill cancerous cells. The team will receive a three-year $484,000 grant from the Department of Defense to help with the treatment method’s development. The original idea came from alumnus Maham Rahimi, who is now a medical student at Texas Tech University, she said.

Bioengineering professor Hanli Liu has been working on ways to help prostate cancer patients’ diagnosis. In the last two years, she discovered that prostate cancer diagnosis is pretty much “blind.” “Because of the poor diagnosis of prostate cancer, the current prostate cancer patients are either under or over treated. Undertreatments cause patients’ lives. Over-treatments cause patients’ unnecessary impotence or incontinence or both,” she said in an e-mail. “It is ... imperative to develop a diagnostic technique that would be used with the regular needle biopsy tool and guide the clinicians to select the biopsy sites where the prostate tissue is suspicious for cancer.” Liu and her team will receive a three-year $508,000 grant from the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program this semester. The program funds innovative ideas and encourages new technology development. “Overall, the proposed work will greatly improve the accuracy of prostate cancer diagno-

Athletics Director Pete Carlon said the athletics benefits in Pepsi’s contract are a large improvement from the previous contract. “We looked at what some other campuses were getting from their soft drink contracts, and we realized we were not even in the same ballpark — both with services and sponsorship,” he said. “So, we encouraged the university administration to do a request for proposals to see what other interested providers could do for the institution, not just athletics.” Carlon said the contract also includes a $600,000 signage sponsorship for a scoreboard,

and all the money the athletic department receives will go to student scholarships. The $600,000 goes into an account with other university money that is not allocated through the federal government, state government or students, said Business Affairs vice president Rusty Ward. Then the money goes into the President’s Auxiliary Account, and the president distributes the money as he sees fit to organizations that do not produce their own revenue. “We are being conservative at the moment,” he said. “We don’t know whether the sum total of what we can spend or allocate will go up or down until the legislative session is over.” Dahncke said sponsoring a college campus appeals to the

After Caldwell completes his degree, he plans to start a career in marketing research or continue his education by pursuing a doctorate degree. “I put my best into everyday,” Caldwell said. “That is success when you have done your best.”

A friend of Caldwell later told him about the wheelchair basketball team, the Movin’ Mavs, and Caldwell decided to try out. He wasn’t sure that he would make the team, but the late Movin’ Mavs’ head coach Jim Hayes saw something special in him — so much that Caldwell ended up with a scholarship. “Coach Hayes did not just prepare me for basketball, but he also prepared me for life,” he said. Doug Garner, who took over the Movin’ Mavs after Hayes’ death, said Tim Caldwell is a hard worker. “He shows up to practice early, lifts weights, watches what he eats,” Garner said. Besides what he does on the court, Caldwell joined the Graduate Student Senate as a member in fall 2007. Caldwell worked his
