Dominant Motor Performance READ BELOW HOW. • Sullivan’s TURBO America’s #1 Livestock Fan • Nothing matches the Turbo for Air POWER! The Turbo pushes air 5,560 feet per minute at an incredible 1,740 RPMs and an industry leading 8,453 CFM’s. This is 22% faster and harder than the other livestock fans. Keeping your livestock cool depends on providing a push of high velocity air power to your animal. • The Dominant Motor Performance ... We have over-engineered the Turbo motor for added performance. The premium Nidec-Emerson 1/2 HP sealed ball bearing motor features a very important component, a 10% larger internal stator and rotor ‘stack’ for more horse power than standard 1/2 HP motors. This extra ‘stack’ powers it to run faster than any other livestock fan that we know of. As an added benefit, the Turbo motor runs 11% cooler than competitors 1/2 HP motors, this allows cooler air output from the Turbo.
STOCK SHOW FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED SINCE 1989.
• The Problem-Free Guard... Built for Longevity! Constructed of extra-thick 7 gauge and 11 gauge steel wire that is formed into a continuous one-piece spiral formation for reinforced strength that is not provided in other fans. This engineered craftsmanship has proven to create strength that is virtually crush-proof! Baked-on powder coat treatment for corrosion resistance and a cleaner appearance. No other fan guard withstands the rigors of the show road like the Turbo.

Unbelievable Daughters > at Bush, SD
Unbelievable is an incredibly designed calving ease prospect that owns unique neck extension, unquestioned structural soundness, extra special belly depth, and super muscle shape for an Angus bull. Unbelievable is sired by the wildly popular Bismarck bull, yet offers extra depth and hair, no doubt due to his maternally stacked pedigree which consists of a double shot of legendary Flashback laced with VRD and TC Dividend. We envision Unbelievable siring extra-ordinary low birth-weight progeny utilizable in both purebred and hybrid cow herds. We can’t wait for Unbelievable progeny!

“FairView Angus Ranch has used Standing Heat estrus detection patches for the last couple of years with great success. We use around 1000 patches a year and have minimal if any loss, the patch adhesiveis so sticky they can actually be difficult to get off the cow. The patch rub off rate is a true reflection of how much the animal has been ridden. We feel we are catching more true heats, in turn getting more cattle bred. We’ve tried other brands of heat detection patches, but once you use the Standing Heat system you won’t want to use anything else.”
Tim Marshall, Marshall Cattle Company, Medicine Lodge, KS
“We used your patches, and they are awesome!!! Those cows were wet hided when we put them on, and we didn’t have any fall off early. If you don’t have a dealer in this area, I would like to get set up as one if possible and start getting my AI customers switched over to your patches. Just wanted to say thank you for making such a great product and let you know I was impressed with how well they worked! My brother’s cows were dry when they put your patches on, and they actually had to use pliers to get some of the patches off after they bred - I never dreamed there was a self-adhesive patch out there with that kind of sticking power!”

V ViEW FROM A VET
By Dr. Kelly Warner, DVM | Elgin Veterinary Hospital, Elgin, TX
Bovine
SinuSitiS With the end of the spring show season near, preparations are being made for next year’s livestock. During this time of year, calves are struggling with the stresses of a new environment: different feeding routines, halter-breaking, varying weather conditions and potential routine surgeries. Something that calf owners and veterinarians will encounter during this time is a medical issue called “sinusitis,” or inflammation of the sinus cavity. This article will focus on what may be causing this problem, signs and symptoms of sinusitis, as well as treatment and prevention. What are the causes? Cattle have several sinus cavities within their skull. The frontal and maxillary sinuses are the most involved with typical clinical concerns. These sinuses communicate with one another as they travel from the horn/pole region and down towards the nose, but do not communicate from left to right. Sinuses are lined with respiratory tissue (epithelium) that is also found in the nasal passages and in the trachea. The most common predisposing factors for sinusitis in show cattle are post-dehorning complications. This can occur with the occasional post-operative infection or if a piece of bone is not completely removed. The offending bone fragment can be as small as a few millimeters and can act as a “foreign body” to the calf ’s immune system. This means that the immune system will respond by sending white blood cells to “clean up” the problematic piece of bone by producing pus and inflammation. Clinical signs associated with a post-surgical dehorn may occur immediately after the surgery or several months later and will persist until the bone fragment is removed. Upper respiratory infections (similar to humans) are another major cause of sinusitis. These infections may be bacterial or viral in origin. Additionally, an infected tooth (an upper premolar or molar) can develop an infection that extends toward the sinus. Trauma to the face of the animal can cause fractures of the facial bones. These fractures can allow bacteria from the environment to set up infection in the sinus cavity. Since the caudal compartment of the frontal sinus extends into the horn, fractures involving the horn can lead to sinusitis. Lastly, sinusitis can be caused by fungal infections (which are more common in certain regions of the country), cancer, or parasites (Oestrus ovis in sheep).
126 April 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
What Will We see? hoW do We diagnose sinusitis in cattle? Depending on the length of time of the infection, many different clinical signs can be seen. Some of the more common signs are a decreased appetite, fever, or creamy discharge from one or both nostrils that may have a foul odor. Some of the more severe signs can include abnormal breathing sounds, a head that is tilted abnormally, squinting or bulging of the eyes, or neurological signs such as pressing their head against objects (it is thought that the animal may be trying to relieve sinus pressure). Additionally, if a calf has recently had a surgical or “cosmetic” dehorn, there may be swelling or abnormal drainage from the incision site. Diagnosis of sinusitis involves a thorough physical exam and “percussion” of the sinuses. The percussion may reveal a dull sound and the animal may have a painful response. Radiographs (X-rays) may be taken of the skull or of the horn. These radiographs can show fluid in the sinuses, or show other causes of infection such as trauma to the facial bones or evidence of an
infected upper tooth. Sometimes a veterinarian will choose to perform a procedure called a “sinus centesis.” This procedure involves making a small incision into the skin over the sinus and drilling a small hole through the bone. Fluid may be removed from the sinus to culture for the presence of bacteria. hoW do We treat sinusitis? After determining the primary cause of the sinus infection, veterinarians may choose to open the sinus to allow for flushing and drainage. This process is called a “sinusotomy” and is accomplished by trephining (making large holes in the sinus) at strategic places of the skull to allow for the best drainage. Many trephine sites may be necessary for complete resolution of clinical signs. Betadine and saline are often used to flush the sinuses to remove pus and mucous. If an infected tooth is the problem, a trephine site is placed directly over the tooth to allow for removal. The tooth is pushed downward through the open mouth and the site is flushed in the same process mentioned previously.
V ViEW FROM A VET Cattle with horns that have an exposed sinus from trauma or having their horns “tipped back” may be flushed with a pipette and pressurized saline with betadine. Sometimes, a small bandage will be placed on the horns to prevent debris from traveling down the exposed sinus tissue of the horn and leading into the rostral portions of the frontal sinus. This bandage must be “breathable” to allow air flow to dry the exposed tissue but prevent contamination from debris. If the primary cause of sinusitis was a post-surgical dehorn complication, a veterinarian may choose to re-open the incision to allow for drainage and to examine the site for any evidence of bone fragments. If bone fragments are found, they are removed and the area is flushed daily with betadine and saline until the wound is healed. To note, it is imperative to find any remaining pieces of bone as clinical signs will not resolve until they are removed. Animals should receive antibiotics based on the presentation of each animal or based on culture and sensitivity results from a laboratory. They should also be placed on an anti-inflammatory for pain management and to decrease inflammation. If a patient is diagnosed early, clinical signs usually resolve in less than two weeks. More chronic cases require a longer time frame of therapy and may be more difficult to resolve. hoW do We prevent this from happening? Dehorning cattle at a young age is preventative against the more common complications. Younger animals do not have a fully developed sinus system and may be less at risk of encountering open sinus tissue during the procedure. Unfavorable weather conditions (rain, excessive dust, or wind) should be avoided during and after dehorning as this may contaminate the dehorning site. Cattle that are being “tipped back” should have the tips of the horns cauterized to help stop bleeding and prevent bacterial colonization of the fresh tissue. Surgical dehorns should be performed under sterile conditions and care should be taken to remove all bone fragments. Please consult with your veterinarian about any concerns over the clinical signs mentioned above. Your veterinarian will be able to assist you in finding a diagnosis and planning appropriate treatment for your show animal. Dr. Kelly Warner is a 2013 graduate of Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and completed an intensive year-long internship at Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery in Weatherford, Texas, in May of 2014. She is certified in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture and Animal Chiropractic and has a special interest in show stock, bucking bull athletes, and neonatal care. She is currently practicing at Elgin Veterinary Hospital in Elgin, Texas.

Crossroads
to success
Bovine Elite’s founder Carl Rugg used his experience and entrepreneurial drive to build his business from the ground up, focusing on customer service. By Martha Hollida Garrett
I
n 1991, Carl Rugg found himself at a professional crossroads. Deliberating his options, he chose the road of small business ownership. Today, his company, Bovine Elite, LLC is recognized as a leader in the beef semen sales and reproductive services industry.
His background, education and work experiences would prove invaluable over the next few years, as he would need all his resources to establish BEI. Rugg knew almost every aspect of the business from his time studying animal science at Cornell University and reproductive physiology at Colorado State University, plus work experience with Elgin Breeding Services, Ankony Genetic Center and Granada Sire Services—three giants in the business in the 1980s. In fact, he had been hired at Granada in the conception phase. He was charged with the responsibilities of designing the facility, establishing and building the business. He also traveled internationally to develop new markets. Then in 1991, Granada, which was located within an hour of Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas, closed all of its divisions. Rugg was at a crossroads. “I had experienced the momentum of Granada Sire Services first hand, knew the market potential that existed and decided it was time for me to work for myself,” he recalls. He bought the rolling assets of Granada, including the semen storage tanks, semen and embryos and moved it to his house in College Station, Texas in the beginning. He decided to focus the company on the main aspects he enjoyed-- sales and marketing of bovine semen and related AI equipment, education, traveling, evaluating bulls and international sales. He would leave the collection of semen and embryos sides of the business to others. “After just a month of having the business in my house, I leased a 1,500 square foot warehouse in
town. At one point, I sold my house, and had a small apartment in the back of the warehouse. That was home and work for while,” Rugg describes. In 1994, Rugg purchased land and built a 5,000 square foot facility that included a warehouse, office and classroom. Rugg moved Bovine Elite into that facility in 1995 and it continues as the company’s location today. “The first years of business were difficult and 1994 was a particularly tough year, but I was able to maintain the company. Then in 1995, things began to turn around on several fronts. We started producing our annual four-color semen catalog, which we still produce today. We were also one of the first to market semen through our website. I can say that I felt like I had come a long way at that point,” he says adding that today they have incorporated social media tools, email blasts and video blogs as part of their marketing plan. Rugg credits the decision to set up online sales as key to the expansion and progress of Bovine Elite. “It’s convenient for cattlemen to use. It’s easy and cost effective for us to maintain current information on all the bulls we market and it’s powerful, when you look at all the data we can share with cowmen on each bull,” remarks Rugg and he adds, “it’s a good fit to our traditional print methods of advertising.” Today, Bovine Elite markets semen from many bulls across breeds, but they are recognized as the top source in the nation for Charolais semen, and are strong in American breeds, Angus and club calf sires, too. They currently represent over 2,000 bulls. “I fell in love with Charolais cattle, when I first went to work for Dr. Cardwell at Elgin Breeding Services. We not only love the cattle, but we truly enjoy working with Charolais breeders,” he describes. Webb Fields, who has been with the company since 2013, cites experience as one of the critical points that sets Bovine Elite apart.

“We consult on a daily basis, and in my mind, Carl is one of the true pioneers of the cattle reproductive industry. He has some great experience and hands on knowledge that we can translate and give to our clients. We combine that with my cattle selection and breeding knowledge and we are able to give our clients some real insight on how to successfully get their cattle bred and which bulls will put them successfully in the driver’s seat for years to come,” he says. Bovine Elite is recognized nationwide for their AI clinics, which are held eight times a year. A number of experts in the reproductive physiology field discuss a variety of topics in the classroom portion and Bovine Elite’s staff also participates in the teaching portions. Rugg thrives on the education portion and makes sure all aspects of AI are covered and is willing to answer all inquiries from students, as well as their customers. “We teach AI and palpation and we limit the size of each class to 24 students for each four day clinic. We have classroom sessions here at the office and then we spend considerable time with cows at a nearby ranch. We get our students inside more cows than any other school in the country and we have a new set of cows every day. We get young and older folks, some foreign cattlemen and our clinics fill up fast,” says Rugg stressing that they teach total management of an AI program. FRoM THE BEGInnInG, RUGG CHoSE To MAkE CUSToMER SERvICE A Top pRIoRITy. “Service is key and it’s easy to say that, but it’s something we practice. We visit with our clients, we try to understand their goals, their program and take care of them. Anyone can get the same products we have to sell, but not everyone can take care of the customer, like we do,” he emphasizes. Fields adds, “We try to set ourselves apart with great customer service. We strive to handle each order and inquiry in a timely and professional manner. Not only that, but we are a small office and love visiting with both our regulars and new customers. We make sure our customers are taken care of, as we enjoy and appreciate them coming back to us year after year.” The company with Rugg and his wife, penny, at the helm includes Fields, and four other full time employees, plus they traditionally hire two students from nearby Texas A&M University on a part-time basis each semester. Rugg faced another crossroads in late 2013. He was diagnosed with leukemia and has been unable to be in the office and out in the field due to the treatments, required isolation and related health issues. He is quick to credit his staff for keeping the company going, as he managed the company from a distance and largely over the phone. He is now in complete remission and continues to regain his strength and has recently been cleared for limited contact. The best part for him is being able to discuss bulls and visit with cattlemen. Rugg sees a bright future ahead for Bovine Elite and summarizes it this way, “good cattle keep coming from the breeders and this gives us a good product to market.”

Member Name: ____________________________ Address: ______________________________ City: ________________ State: ______ Zip: __________ Well, we have all made it through the 100th Anniversary of the Oklahoma Youth Expo! This means we have reached the end of the 2014-2015 OCCA point year. The final tabulations of the points earned from many miles and countless hours of hard work are being figured and checked over as we speak. I would like to say congratulations to all of this year’s winners and competitors! The Oklahoma Beef Expo is already here. During this time, we celebrate the past year’s winners and kick off the new point year in style. The 2015 Oklahoma Beef Expo will be held April 17-19 at the Payne County Expo Center in Stillwater, Okla. We will have our showmanship contest on Friday night at 5 p.m. The steer show will be Saturday starting at 8 a.m. with Ring 1 and Ring 2 starting right after. Our year-end awards banquet will start at 7 p.m. Saturday night, with the heifer show starting Sunday morning at 8 a.m. We invite everyone to join us a fun, competitive weekend in Stillwater! Again, congratulations to all of this past year’s winners and I look forward to seeing all of you at the Beef Expo to start off another exciting competitive year. Remember “It all starts before sunrise.” See you there.

aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.
ajca
By: Sarah Caldwell - AJCA President-Elect I would like to start by saying thank you to the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association and the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association for allowing me this opportunity to serve as president-elect for this wonderful organization. The 2015 AJCA sanctioned show schedule is in full swing. Our leadership for this term is excited for a great year. With Blaire Wildy leading the team as president, myself as president-elect, Zachary Andrews as secretary, and Will Clark as treasurer, we cannot wait to tackle this year together and work to lead you all to our best abilities. This year, Will Clark embraced the role as our junior treasurer and is doing an immeasurable job. Will is 17 years old, living in Rogers with his mother Cheli and father Cleve, and attends Bentonville

High School. He is the vice president of his FFA Chapter and is the only student in his 7A school of over 4,000 young people to show cattle! Will has been a member of AJCA for seven years. We are so proud of all that he has accomplished and all he will continue to strive toward. Being one of the older members of AJCA, I have had the opportunity to watch my fellow board members flourish into influential young people in life and in the cattle industry. Will has a sheer passion for FFA and is blessed with the gift of speaking to people, encouraging them in all their abilities and dreams. He shows steers, commercial, Simmental, and Maintainer heifers and has been very successful in showmanship! This past show season, Will was awarded with 5th Overall Showman and an Area 1 vice president plaque at our end of the year awards. Now, when discussing Will’s personality, anyone who knows him loves his witty personality. I honestly cannot name a time that I did not laugh when being around him! Whether he cracks a joke about our favorite celebrities or shows Blaire and me a goofy video from our social media, Will always knows how to make us smile. The three of us spent a good portion of our afternoon cracking jokes and having knots in our stomachs from giggling so hard at this year’s Thanksgiving Classic. He is one of my best friends in the show world. I am so thankful to have him at my side as an AJCA Board Member. “Every Champion was once a contender that refused to give up.” - Rocky Balboa

What’s It Worth:
How Stock are Valued By Wealth Management Solutions, Inc. Courtesy of Matthew E. O’Donnell Vice President Morgan Stanley What is a stock’s true value? This question has challenged equity investors and analysts since stocks were first traded. At the core of any buy or sell recommendation lies some estimate of the stock’s intrinsic value — what it should be worth. But analysts calculate this value many different ways, employing different methodologies and taking into consideration a multitude of different qualitative and quantitative factors that can result in wide disparities.
total market value (stock price times number of shares outstanding) by its yearly revenues. Investors will often use this approach when companies have not recorded a profit. The logic is that if sales are strong and growing, and the company is otherwise healthy, earnings may be just around the corner. Value investors, on the other hand, look for low price to sales ratios for stocks for companies that may have been unwittingly thrown on the scrap heap.
While there is no “right” way to value a stock, certain valuation techniques can be more valid in some cases. A growth-oriented investor, for instance, may place greater weight on a company’s earnings growth potential, while a valueoriented investor may place greater emphasis on a stock’s valuation relative to its peers.
• The price-to-book value ratio (P/B) is the result of dividing market capitalization by book value, also known as shareholder equity. Book value represents the company’s theoretical liquidation value, if the company shut down operations, paid off its debts and sold off its assets. As such, the usefulness of book value as a valuation tool depends significantly on the industry. It is particularly relevant in capital intensive businesses.
Three of the most widely used approaches to security valuation are net present value, the dividend discount model, and multiplier analysis. We’ll focus on multiplier analysis because it is the most widely used.
Multiple Ways Looking at a stock’s price as a multiple of its earnings, revenues or assets is the most commonly used valuation metric among analysts and investors. Analysts will typically scrutinize the results of these ratios to examine how investors are currently pricing a publicly-traded company, noting how these multiples compare to industry peers, benchmark indices and market levels. • The price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E, is by far the most widely used valuation metric. It indicates how much investors are currently willing to pay for each dollar of the company’s recent, current or estimated earnings. • The price-to-sales ratio (P/S) indicates how much the market is willing to pay for each dollar of sales. It is derived by dividing a company’s
use the entire tool kit In practice, investors will consider several different valuation approaches and then look at a variety of other information before arriving at a final value. They will try to determine whether a company is fundamentally sound by scouring public reports (10-Ks, 10-Qs, Annual Reports) examining industry trends and understanding the regulatory and market environments, among many other things. They will also consider technical factors such as the stock’s trading history and trends. Ultimately, the “final” valuation will consider a multitude of factors, which may vary widely from analyst to analyst, and is ultimately up to the market’s judgment.
CoMpany Valuation analysis Analysts use multiple criteria for valuing a company, including:
intrinsiC Value analysis
o Determines the security’s “intrinsic value” based on discounted “free” cash flow (DCF) analysis. o Includes estimates of future “free” cash flows that are discounted back to current dollars, including variables such as risk assessment and capital structure. o Looks at present value of shares vs. current share price. o Considers 10-15 year projection. o Defines parameters around DCF to make it more reasonable (e.g. interest rate inputs)
relatiVe Valuation
o Assesses a security’s relative value by comparing appropriate financial ratios across peer groups and industry group. o Reviews company value metrics, including P/E trading history, high/low in cycle and current P/E level justification. o Compares valuation vs. appropriate index.
suM of parts
o Attempts to quantify “fair value” of a stock by determining private market values for a firm’s individual units. o Breaks divisions up as stand-alone business units. o Calculates a relative value for each division. o Arrives at a blended valuation.
risk assessMent
o Examines technical risk, which involves analysis of market trends and patterns rather than an exclusive focus on company fundamentals. o Evaluates insider buying, which may indicate whether company executives or employees believe their stock is undervalued. o Quantifies “beta,” a measure of the volatility of a stock’s price relative to the general market.
No matter what your investment goals may be, a systematic process for stock selection can help take the emotions of your decision making. With that in mind, and advisor can assist you in developing a process that will help determine which stocks to buy or sell and how to manage your overall portfolio. One weird habit/skill/fact about you: When it comes to getting up at 6:30 for school it’s next to impossible for me to open my eyes, but I can gladly wake up at 4:30 for a show. Favorite show memory so far: My very first show was at Hoosier Beef Congress and it was showmanship. I was 7 years old and weighed maybe 50-60 pounds. I had practiced with my dad out in our barn lot and was so ready to show. When I got into the show ring, the calf I was showing tried to eat EVERYTHING. It tried eating the garland decorations around the fence, the fence, the straw bales, and the poinsettias. Not only did that happen but he also stepped on my foot in the same place twice. I came out of the show ring crying because I was so small and I got pushed around the whole time and my foot hurt. Ten minutes after that I looked at my parents and said “That was fun! When can I do it again?” That’s when I got hooked on showing. Least favorite show day task: Breaking my calf down to go home Most Embarassing stock show moment: My second year in 4-H I had a steer that was tame, I had taken him to a couple open shows and he acted fine. For some reason, when I got him to our county fair and got him in the ring for the show, he just got excited. He started jogging, whipped his head, flung me out in front of him and he trampled me, hurting my knee. I ended up getting taken out on one of those emergency medical golf carts and had to go to the hospital. When I got there I told the doctors I had to make it back for the Grand Drive.

Favorite singer/music group: Either Turnpike Troubadours or Taylor Swift. Complete opposites, but I love them both! Favorite book/author: Hmmm... Jen Calonita most likely, but mostly all the books that I read are all by different authors! Pet peeve: I cannot stand to get anything below an A at school. I think it’s because I’ve never had anything but all A’s on my progress reports. Names of your current steers/heifers: Kelsie is my maintainer, and Cinderella is my Sim-solution What’s your favorite stock show and why? Denver!! The fact that I’m there for 2 weeks does get tiring, but the scenery, they yards, everything is so wonderful! ( especially the shopping!) What do you want to be when you grow up? The fact that I will work hard whenever something is expected of me. Favorite subject in school: Math Would you rather dance, play cards or hula hoop? Play cards! PROFESSORTOPRODUCER [ PART TWO ]
ToTal ConfinemenT for Beef Cows: is it economical? Paul Walker, Professor emeritus Di Walker Consulting In my last column, I outlined some guidelines that should be considered when operating a total confinement operation for beef cows. In this article, I will share the costs to operate a total confinement cow-calf operation. The costs are high, in part because EPA requires that all the runoff water must be controlled from discharge. The easiest method to avoid discharge water is to house all the cows totally under roof (no open concrete lots). Practically, this is impossible during breeding season because natural mating should occur on earth to avoid bull injury. For winter-spring calving operations this may be possible without having discharge, as natural breeding will occur between the months of June and August. However, total facility design will be important to avoid an EPA “potential to discharge.” In the scenario described here, the operation contains 200 mother cows with calves and replacement heifers. This operation is a medium size CAFO, as EPA counts head number and not animal units i.e. (200 cows, 180 calves, 30 yearlings, and 4 bulls equal 414 cattle). If this were a pasture operation without total dry lot confinement of the cow herd, EPA would consider it a small-medium size animal feeding operation (AFO) and potential to discharge is not a concern. As a medium size CAFO, potential to discharge must be controlled or the operation must apply for a NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) permit. A NPDES permit can be highly regulated, so producers really do not want to qualify for a NPDES permit.

2) The operation contains 200 mothers cows, weans a 90% calf crop, replaces 12.5% of the cows: year, sells all calves at weaning except replacement heifers, 15% of the calves (1/3 of the heifer calves) are kept as replacements, calving occurs in a 60-day time span and all cows are bred at a timed insemination followed by a 60-day natural breeding period. The cows have an 8 year life span, are valued at $3,000 with a 4% capital recovery interest rate equivalent to $446: year. 3) The base cow diet is corn silage (CS) and modified wet distillers grains with solubles (mWDGS). Outside of using corn condensed distillers solubles (CDS), mWDGS plus CS is the least expensive diet I can calculate. During peak lactation, the cows will consume a diet of 10.85 lbs. of mWDGS, 35.83 lbs. of CS, 0.3lbs. of limestone, and 0.2 lbs. of a thiamine/rumensin premix per day. This diet costs $1.03: day or $375.95: year : cow. Bulls will consume the same ration as the cows. Yearling heifers will be fed the cow diet that contains 2/3 the amount of CS costing 84.26¢/day or #307.55: year: heifer. Calves will be fed a creep diet containing 50% soy hull pellets and 50% corn gluten feed pellets from day 90 to day 230 (140d). Estimated consumption of creep is 7 lb. / day / calf, costing 47.25¢ / day or $66.15 / calf / year. Following weaning, the replacement heifers will be fed the creep diet for 70 days and the cow diet minus 2/3 of the CS for 65 days, to complete their first year of life 4) Housing for cows is a monoslope structure open to the south or east, with solid end walls, open front and curtain sided back wall. The building could be an open ridge vent roof or a hoop structure. Capital recovery for the building is at 4% interest over 20 years. 5) To avoid having to build a concrete manure storage structure (EPA requires 6-8 months manure storage) manure and bedding pack will be either composted or spread on agriculture fields during appropriate times of the year. Developing a compost site and purchasing a new compost turner/used tractor combination is less expensive than constructing a concrete manure storage pad. 6) Corn silage will be stored in plastic bags as opposed to using a bunker silo to prevent the need to control potential runoff. Bedding and mWDGS will be stored under roof to prevent potential runoff. 7) The cow barn will contain 10 cow housing pens, 1 heifer pen, 8 – 12’ x 12’ calving pens, a cattle handling facility and fence line bunks in a circle flow design. The limiting factor determining size of the cow barn is the amount of feed bunk space that is required. Cows must be limit fed or program fed to prevent them from becoming too fat. Cows in late gestation require 30 to 36 inches of linear bunk space, if all cows are allowed to eat at one time. Therefore, 200 cows x 3’ = 600’ of bunk space, at 20 cows per pen this equals 60’ of bunk space required. using an indoor feed alley, 30’ of linear bunk space with a 12’ cattle gate can be placed on each of two sides of the pen; making each pen 42’ wide. The midwest Planning Service suggests each cow-calf pair requires 75 sq. ft. of space in confinement, but if each pen contains one 32’ x 16’ creep area for the calves and the total building width is 80’ each cow has 104.6 sq. ft. of space; this is more than the minimum required but the bedding will remain cleaner, longer. This is a management strategy that keeps pens cleaner, reduces manure handling and improves sanitation and calf health. 8) This scenario includes a two acre fenced earth lot, to which cows can have access during the natural mating season. Five acres are allotted to the facility to locate the cow barn, earth lot, commodity shed, and bedding storage facility. The u.S. average land cost in 2013 was $2,950: acre, in Illinois it was $7,700. This scenario used the u.S. average with a 20-year capital recovery at 4% interest. 9) Four bulls will be used each year with a purchase value of $4,000. If each bull is used for 3 years, on average 1.3 bulls must be purchased/sold each year. For a producer who owns the cows, land, buildings, and some amount of equipment, pulling cows off pasture and housing them in total confinement can be marginally profitable returning $55,942 to management and labor. For a young producer just starting an operation who must purchase everything, total confinement – just like a pasture-based system outlined in my column two issues ago – is a losing proposition to the tune of $80,134: year. Even when cow cost and land cost are excluded for a young producer, a total confinement operation only returns $9,000 to $10,000 to management and labor. Now is not the time for beginning operators to get into a commercial cow-calf enterprise. Now is the time to already be in the cow-calf business; the time to enter was prior to 2010 when prices were lower. Existing producers with minimal debt can successfully expand at this time, but those who expanded prior to 2012 will make the most money.

Just as small scale, farrow-to-finish swine producers of 1960s and 1970s found out, buying sows when prices were higher was not profitable. We called those folks the “Inners and Outers”. These farmers bought sows when prices were high, created debt and as u.S. pig numbers increased, they lost money. As a result, they dispersed the sow herd when prices were low and lost more money, only to get back in when the prices went back up. If you want to keep the glass half full or more, you must be in a value added business. That is why it is always a good time to be in, expand or get into a registered seed stock enterprise.

EL NiñO hAS FiNALLy ARRivED
Just when you were about to give up on seeing it come to life, El Nino has finally emerged, according to forecasters with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC). “Based on the persistent observations of above-average sea surface temperatures across the western and central equatorial Pacific Ocean and consistent pattern of sea level pressure, we can now say that El Niño is here,” explains Mike Halpert, CPC deputy director and ENSO forecaster. “Many climate prediction models show this weak El Niño continuing into summer.” Due to the weak strength of the El Niño, widespread or significant global weather pattern impacts are not anticipated. However, certain impacts often associated with El Niño may appear this spring in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, such as wetter-than-normal conditions along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Forecasters say it is likely (50-60% chance) that El Niño conditions will continue through the summer. The last El Niño, in 2009-2010, was a moderate to strong event. Other recent El Niño’s took place from 2002-2003 (moderate), 2004-2005 (weak), 2006-2007 (weak to moderate). The last very strong El Nino was 1997-1998 and was known for providing heavy rainfall in the West, especially California. As for this year, Halpert says, “This El Nino is likely too late and too weak to provide much relief for drought-stricken California.” – Cattle Current
BEEF TRADE TROUBLES
By Dr. Derrell S. Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist
I dislike the term “perfect storm” because it is too frequently used and too casually applied to many situations. However, it is an appropriate description of international cattle and beef trade in early 2015. Several factors joined forces simultaneously to seriously impact beef exports and imports so far this year. The situation in 2015 is a continuation of trade issues that developed in 2014. Total beef production decreased nearly 6% in 2014 and resulted in dramatic increases in U.S. cattle and beef prices. A rapidly strengthening U.S. dollar in the second half of the year further exaggerated prices both with respect to U.S. exports and imports, making U.S. exports more expensive and imported beef more attractive in the U.S. market. Beef exports were mixed to major export destinations in 2014, compared to 2013, with increased exports to South Korea (up 19%); Hong Kong (up 16%) and Mexico (up 8%) offsetting decreased exports to Canada (down 22%) and Japan (down 1%) and holding total exports to a less than 1% decrease. Continued growth in beef exports pushed the Hong Kong total, which surpassed South Korea in 2013, past Canada to be the No. 3 U.S. beef export destination behind Japan and Mexico in 2014. Total 2014 beef imports were up 31%, year over year, with increases from all major import sources. Import increases were led by Australia (up 74%); Mexico (up 23%); New Zealand (up 14%) and Canada (up 12%). The majority of U.S. beef imports are processing beef, largely for ground beef, the demand for which was enhanced in 2014 by a 14% drop in U.S. cow slaughter. The West Coast dock slowdown that developed in late 2014 culminated in severe disruptions in meat exports by January of this year. The combination of adverse economic values and hampered logistics dealt a serious blow to beef exports in January. The dock dispute has been settled but it will likely take several more weeks for port movement to return to normal. In the meantime, some beef that would have been exported was diverted back into
domestic markets on top of the winter weather impacts that slowed beef movement and demand in the U.S. U.S. cattle imports were up 16% in 2014 from one year earlier as U.S. cattle market prices and the strengthening dollar attracted more cattle form Canada and Mexico. Total feeder cattle imports were up 20% year over year, consisting of a 13% increase in Mexican cattle imports and a 38% increase in Canadian feeder cattle. Canadian slaughter cattle imports were up 7% in 2014 compared to year earlier levels. Recently released Canadian cattle inventories indicate that cattle numbers continue to fall in Canada and that herd rebuilding has not yet begun. Anticipated increases in heifer retention in both Canada and Mexico may limit cattle exports from both countries to the U.S. in 2015. Despite tight cattle numbers and potential heifer retention, strong U.S. cattle prices and weaker Canadian and Mexican currencies will keep the incentives to export cattle to the U.S. strong. Improvement in the port situation should improve the flow of beef in the coming weeks. Moving forward in 2015, it’s not clear whether the dollar will continue strengthening relative to other currencies, but U.S. beef and cattle prices will remain high in any event. The surge in beef imports from Australia has been fueled by drought-forced liquidation and unsustainable levels of Australian beef production. Continued drought may result in additional Australian cattle liquidation but possibly at a slower pace as cattle inventories decrease. Drought improvement could lead to sudden decreases in beef exports from the country if rebuilding should begin. Though some of the factors adversely affecting beef trade may improve, it is likely that U.S. beef exports will continue weak and drop more in 2015 while beef imports will likely remain elevated. – Cow/Calf Corner

“Like many others, we honestly had reservations about going with a new sale site, but in the end we were extremely happy and everybody was great to work with. We found that the Watchlist and the red and green boxes were very user-friendly, from the buyers point of view. There was no question that it was easy to see what you had bid on and what the current status was. We also loved the after sale financials in the sale summary, from the seller point of view. Currently, we are planning to have our 2016 bull sale with SCO.” - Dave & Nancy Caffee, Lacey Caffee
