As one of the most talked about bulls in Denver 2013, Game On is perhaps the most versatile bull to come along in sometime. He is moderate, stout, and stylish. He has the muscle, bone, and hair to sire show ring winners at the most competitive steer shows while maintaining a place in the purebred industry. Game On is a great match for Heat Wave daughters and granddaughters or any cow needing look and power.

Grand Champion Junior Market Lamb, 2011 National Western Stock Show

Showing lambs is competitive business; success in the ring is dependent on getting the most out of your lambs from day one! What does it take? Dedication and a feed ration that is second to none. Showmaster® feeds provide a wide variety of products that I could match to the individual needs of my animals. Overall health and wellbeing is a must if you are showing multiple weekends over hundreds of miles. I never worried that my lambs would go off feed as they charged the feed pan every time. Showmaster® Lamb Developer has led me to the winner’s circle time and time again. When you are looking for a product that will increase muscle mass, touch and show ring appeal, look no further than Showmaster®! Grand Champion Market Lamb, 2012 Indiana State Fair 4-H Show

Professor to Producer Creep Feeding Can Pay Dividends

by Dr. Paul Walker, Professor of Animal Science at Illinois State University

Each year, producers must decide whether or not to creep feed calves. Under many conditions, creep feeding is an inefficient and costly way to increase calf weaning weight. Generally, it takes 8 to 9 lbs. of creep feed for each additional pound of gain. Calves that have been creep fed during most of the nursing period are often “fleshier” or in excess condition at weaning and, consequently, bring a lower price per pound for the commercial producer than thinner calves. In addition, there is increasing scientific evidence that suggests medium frame heifer calves that consume a high-energy creep will have comparatively lower milk production yields when they are mature cows. This is most likely due to increased fat deposits in the udder, which cause the aveoli (milk secreting cells of the udder) to become non-functional. Generally, this process is irreversible. Once a heifer becomes overfat, feeding her to lose weight will not regain the “lost” aveoli. Some research studies have suggested creep feeding larger framed, later maturing heifers may actually have no effect or the opposite effect, i.e. may increase subsequent milk production potential. If this is true, larger framed cattle may require more energy during the early growth periods in order to realize maximum production later in life. Another reason to creep calves is to prepare calves for early weaning (90 to 120 days of age). Creep feeding a high-energy feed from a very early age is imperative if early weaning is successful. For many commercial producers, the disadvantages of creep feeding outweigh the advantages. However, there are cases when creep feeding is desirable, and in some instances, a must. During seasons of drought when pastures are short, calves may require a supplemental source of energy if satisfactory weaning weights are to be achieved. Rapidly growing calves whose mothers are genetically or nutritionally marginal milkers, also, may need a supplemental source of energy. A cow’s milk production increases to – and then peaks at – 60 days

postpartum. The calf’s total energy requirement becomes greatest after this point because of its increase in body size. Consequently, the milk-producing capabilities of the cow may not be capable of completely meeting these requirements.

“Once a heifer becomes overfat, feeding her to lose weight will not regain the “lost” aveoli.” The mothers of calves that are creep fed generally maintain higher condition scores. Because calves that receive a supplemental energy source have less nutritional dependence on their dam for increased milk production, the cow is able to store more of her energy intake as body fat. To a point, this may be desirable for some purebred producers, as potential bull buyers are often impressed by large cows, and many cannot tell the difference between a 1,300-pound medium frame cow in moderate to thin condition and a smaller frame 1,300-pound cow in moderate to fat condition. However, care should be taken that cows do not become too fat because reproductive performance will decrease. Potential show calves that have been creep fed will generally bring more at early fall calf sales because of their bloomy appearance. This is especially true for breeders consigning heifer and steer calves to club calf sales. Most calves will not begin to eat creep until

about 60 days of age. My recommendation for club calf producers is to put limited amounts of creep feed out when the oldest calf is about 60 days old. As older calves begin entering the creep feeder, it will entice younger calves to begin eating as well. The extra weight and condition club calves put on prior to weaning will enhance their phenotype and generally increase their sales value. Under some circumstances (excellent pasture for grazing or heavy milking mother cows) producers may choose to delay creep feeding March-April-May born show calf prospects until early October.

ingredient. Oats are the single best feedstuff for young growing animals because oats are the only feedstuff other than GMO grains for which the protein quality increases as the percent composition of protein increases. The creep diet should never be composed of 100% shelled corn. Corn is too high in TDN and too low in crude protein. Corn contains approximately 91% TDN and only 8%-10% crude protein. An exception for including a high percentage of shelled corn in a creep diet is for early-weaned calves that will go onto an accelerated, single phase, finishing pro-

“My recommendation for club calf producers is to put limited amounts of creep feed out when the oldest calf is about 60 days old.” Commercial producers who sell their calves at weaning may also find an advantage for creep feeding their calves the last 30 days of the nursing period. Some feedlot operators will pay a premium for calves that are started on grain as part of a pre-conditioning program, i.e. “bunkwise” calves. A creep feed should be palatable and readily consumed.A good creep diet should contain at least 14% crude protein and 70%-80% TDN. The protein should be composed of all natural protein. Urea or other NPN (non protein nitrogen) sources should not be used, as young calves cannot consume enough energy to utilize the urea. The addition of low-level antibiotic is desirable. The creep feed should contain approximately 70-100 grams of antibiotic per ton of mixture. Including an ionophore such as Rumensin or Bovatec® to prevent coccidiosis is important, also. Choices of feed ingredients may vary according to locale. Cost of feed ingredients and availability of feeds should determine what feedstuffs make up the creep diet. For most areas of the United States, oats are the single best ingredient. If oats are of a high quality, high in crude protein and TDN, they can be the sole

gram. Research has found that feeding a creep diet high in shelled corn increases propionate production (one of the three major volatile fatty acids in the rumen), which in turn increases onset of marbling – thereby increasing quality grade at harvest.

My favorite creep diet contains: • Kent® Baby Beef 34 with 240 grams Bovatec:ton • Beet Pulp shreds without molasses • Whole oats Other diets I recommend include: Diet 1: • 57.8% crimped oats • 22.5% cracked shelled corn • 20% 32% commercial protein supplement Diet 2 • 25% ground alfalfa hay • 55% cracked shelled corn • 20% 32% commercial protein supplement Diet 3 • 4% dried molasses • 5% ground corn cobs • 10% ground alfalfa hay • 29% soybean meal • 30% cracked shelled corn • 3% animal fat • 1% added calcium carbonate

Other than oats, I prefer not to incorporate any grains into a creep diet. Cattle are ruminants and as ruminants they are designed to eat high fiber diets. Therefore, I prefer creep diets that contain highly digestible fiber feedstuffs along with oats and a protein supplement. If you are interested in show cattle, a highly digestible, high-fiber creep feed will expand the rumen and the intestine in calves, helping to create cattle that are deeper flanked. Feedstuffs that contain highly digestible fiber include soybean hulls, beet pulp, brewers dried grains, corn gluten feed and distiller’s grains. These feedstuffs are low in starch, also. Therefore, overeating

“Oats are the single best feedstuff for young growing animals because oats are the only feedstuff other than GMO grains for which the protein quality increases as the percent composition of protein increases.”

disease (enterotoxema) is not a problem if these are the primary ingredients in a creep diet. If soyhulls, corn gluten feed or distiller’s grains are used as creep feed ingredients they should be pelleted. Meals should never be included in creep diets as they separate in the creep mixture and can cause palatability problems.

7) Place the creep feeders in the same location each year to minimize pasture kill. 8) If the cow herd is large enough and the pasture is available, consider dividing the cows with heifer calves into a separate herd from the cows with bull calves. This gives the producer the option of creep feeding only the bull calves or of giving the heifer calves a lower energy feed.

“NEVER allow the creep feeder to become empty or allow the calves to be without creep for more than six hours. Erratic consumption and overeating may result and can lead to severe digestive disturbances in the young calf.” 9) Above all else, once the producer begins to creep feed calves, NEVER allow the creep feeder to become empty or allow the calves to be without creep for more than six hours. top 10 things you didn’t know about

April

Everyone knows April showers bring May flowers (we hope anyway). But here are some fun bits of trivia to entertain you on those long drives to spring shows:

10

April hasn’t always been the fourth month. According to “Road Tickle,” April used to be the second month of the year back in the days of the Roman Empire. It was bumped to fourth when the Romans decided to make January the first month of the year.

9

The first Pony Express route began on April 3, 1860. It ran between Missouri and California.

8

The Revolutionary War began and ended in April. It began on April 11, 1783 and ended on April 19, 1775.

7

Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King were both assassinated in April. Lincoln was killed in 1865 and King was gunned down in 1968.

6

The Titanic Sunk on April 15, 1912.

5

April used to have only 29 days. The Romans changed it to prevent inaccuracies in the calendar due to the rotation of the Earth. Now April is one of four months that have 30 days.

4

William Shakespeare was born and died on April 23. He was born in 1564 and died in 1616.

3

April is believed to come from the Latin word that means “open” – aperire. Others think it’s named after Aphrodite, the goddess of love.

2

Nickelodeon started in April of 1979. What would our kids watch now if this famous TV channel had never been?

1

What do April 1st and April 15th have in common? On April Fools Day, you get to play pranks on people. On Tax Day you feel like you’re in an episode of Prank’d when you have to write that check to the IRS.

• Up N Coming is a full brother to the popular Styles Upgrade J59; purchased by ABS Global, Wagonhammer Ranch and Baldridge Bros. for $30,000, in Styles Angus 2009 sale, and is becoming one of the most popular calving ease bulls ABS has to offer. • There is some amazing cow power behind Up N Coming with his dam posting a BR of 9/90, 7/113 for IMF, and 7/106 for REA. His grand dam also had a BR 9/94. • Up N Coming has an amazing amount of thickness and depth of rib, yet still has a great phenotypical look. Not all calving ease sires can say that!

ANNOUNCEMENTS TRANS OVA GENETICS JOINS FORCES WITH VIAGEN Trans Ova Genetics of Sioux Center, Iowa is pleased to announce the acquisition of ViaGen of Austin, Texas. The two companies have been joint venture partners in the bovine cloning company, Bovance, since 2007.

“In addition to strengthening our domestic offering of services to all species, we look forward to interaction with collaborators from around the world that will help further advance this technology as a whole.”

“This is a tremendous opportunity for both Trans Ova Genetics and ViaGen,” says Dr. David Faber, President of Trans Ova Genetics. “We are delighted to bring the world class team of scientists and personnel from ViaGen to join forces with the Trans Ova Genetics team. Combining this elite group of reproductive experts under one roof will benefit all of the technologies in our reproductive toolbox.”

OHIO BEEF EXPO WELCOMES BEEF INDUSTRY

ViaGen will now operate as a wholly owned division of Trans Ova Genetics. They will continue to serve the livestock industry by providing Genetic Preservation, Express Tissue Banking and Cloning services to many livestock species including horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, and deer. In addition, ViaGen will also continue to provide Genetic Preservation services for all other non-primate mammal species. Trans Ova Genetics will continue to help progressive cattle breeders effectively implement the entire reproductive toolbox of ART (assisted reproductive technology). This will include embryo transfer (ET), in vitro fertilization (IVF), sexed semen for use in ET and IVF, and ViaGen Cloning technology. Trans Ova Genetics has 20 locations across the U.S. with headquarters in Sioux Center, Iowa and has been serving the reproductive technology needs of their clients for over 33 years. Bovance, the joint venture entity formed by these two parent companies in 2007, will transition its business components to ViaGen – a division of Trans Ova Genetics. Diane Broek, Cloning Sales and Marketing Manager for ViaGen indicated that “Bovance clients can rest assured that their agreements, cell lines and animals produced using cloning technology will be managed in the same place by the same people. The changes for our clients will be minimal.” “We are very excited about the opportunities this acquisition presents to us as a business and the additional opportunities it will bring to our clients” says Blake Russell, President of ViaGen.

Beef industry enthusiasts gathered in Columbus, Ohio, March 15-17, for the 2013 Ohio Beef Expo. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) hosted more than 30,000 participants and attendees at the Ohio Expo Center. Eight breed shows and one breed parade were featured Friday, as well as numerous breed displays. The Genetic Pathway, in the upper hall of the Voinovich Livestock and Trade Center, had the industry’s most popular sires and donor prospects on display throughout the weekend. Seven breed sales brought in large crowd on Saturday, March 17, selling 384 lots with an average price of $2,809 and a gross of $1,078,765. Three recipients were honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for their loyal support of the Expo. Doug Conkle of the Ohio Expo Center maintenance crew; Johnny Regula, owner and operator of an auctioneer and mulch business out of Ostrander, Ohio; and Wood County Beef Producers, long-time supporters of the youth judging contest; were chosen for their time and dedication in contributing to the success of the Expo. For junior exhibitors, Friday afternoon began with two fitting and clipping demonstrations and a welcome party. Events continued Saturday with Beef Quality Assurance training, a showmanship contest, and a judging contest that included 290 participants. The junior portion wrapped up Sunday with the market animal show and heifer show with a combined total of more than 690 head from across the state. The dates for the 2014 Ohio Beef Expo are March 14-16. Visit www.ohiobeefexpo.com for more information as well as complete coverage of the 2013 event.

TECH TRENDS

Turn investment for the future into marketing for today with advanced reproductive technologies.

Advanced reproductive technologies can increase the rate of genetic change and be an investment for future calf crops. However, embryo transfer (ET), in vitro fertilization (IVF), sexed semen, and genetic preservation and cloning offer additional opportunities for marketing your cattle’s elite genetics. Auctions offering frozen genetics (cryopreserved embryos and semen) have become increasingly popular. Freezing and banking ET embryos can be a very effective way to help generate early revenue from a cow or heifer that was recently purchased, or from a female that a breeder does not have an interest in selling. “Frozen embryos are very easy to transport across “Embryos are typically offered in packthe country, so buyers from ages of three at embryo auctions such as thousands of miles away can the Embryos on Snow event held each year consider purchases without during the National Western Stock Show,” significant added costs.” says Mark Allan, director of marketing and genomics at Trans Ova Genetics. “Frozen embryos are very easy to transport across the country, so buyers from thousands of miles away can consider purchases without significant added costs.” Once in a while, a bull comes into high demand with very Also, it allows an interested buyer to sample multiple, dif- limited amounts of semen available. One advantage of IVF is ferent breeding programs with a fairly small upfront invest- the limited number of sperm cells it requires for fertilization. ment. “If a client chooses not to sort the semen before use in Offering even greater flexibility for a buyer is a right to IVF, we can often use one straw of high quality semen on 5 or flush package, which allows an interested breeder to pick the more donors at a time,” says Allan. “But, this is highly depensire they would like to use for the flush. Many times these dent on semen quality and quantity packaged per straw.” are sold on prominent females and there are guarantees on the number of embryos produced on these packages, but it is Some breeders are beginning to understand the marketing important to look into the details before making a purchase. opportunity behind IVF technology. A breeder will use one unit of semen, aspirate three cows from their program, and sell fertilization “slots” to other breeders. Donors would need Sexed Semen Sells Sexed semen is another value-added market. Many new to be collected on the same day. Through some logistic coorbulls have a hard time differentiating themselves from com- dination, this application of IVF gives the elite semen owner petition, but offering packages of sexed semen is something the option of selling one unit of semen several different times. unique. Since sexed semen can be sorted for males or females, and differentiated for artificial insemination (AI) or ET programs, there are opportunities to develop a creative marketing plan around sexed semen. Recently, the combination of sexed semen in ET and IVF programs has allowed breeders to market sexed frozen embryos on specific mattings. This holds tremendous potential to offer a package that is very specific to what buyers may be looking for.

Finally, cloning offers additional possibilities for breeders to capture more from their genetic assets. A breeder with an elite animal can collect a tissue sample that can be developed into a cell line, or Genetic Preservation. These cells can be used in the cloning processor simply preserved as an insurance policy for future use. Many animals produced using cloning technology have been sold in recent years and there

have also been Genetic Preservation packages sold by creative producers. Diane Broek, Sales and Marketing Manager for ViaGen – the division of Trans Ova Genetics that provides cloning services, indicated that “An additional sale feature that has gained popularity in recent years is the right to clone an animal; one time. In this case, the original owner keeps all rights to the Genetic Preservation but will release enough cells for a one time cloning opportunity at the discretion and expense of the purchaser. In this case, the buyer has a unique opportunity to obtain world class genetics that would otherwise not be offered at public auction.”

Adding Revenue Quickly

Breeders tend to view advanced reproductive technologies as investments that have long-term impact on our breeding programs, and they certainly are. However, these services also offer ways to market genetics in a way that adds revenue to a breeding program very quickly. Breeders have found creative ways to meet customer needs through these technologies and many other opportunities still exist. April 2013 • theshowcircuit.com

THE SHOW CIRCUIT

FEATURES SCHEDULE THE BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAMS SOON By Dr. Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Emeritus Extension Animal Scientist Although the spring calving season may still be ongoing, the next breeding season is only a few weeks away. Now is the time to schedule the old and new bulls for their prebreeding soundness examination. For the breeding soundness evaluation to be successful, bulls should be evaluated 30 to 60 days before the start of breeding. It is important to allow sufficient time to replace questionable bulls. Bulls could also be evaluated at the end of breeding to determine if their fertility decreased. A breeding soundness exam is administered by a veterinarian and includes a physical examination (feet, legs, eyes, teeth, flesh cover, scrotal size and shape), an internal and external examination of the reproductive tract, and semen evaluation for sperm cell motility and normality. The physical examination studies overall appearance. Flesh cover is one factor to evaluate. Body condition can be affected by length of the breeding season, grazing and supplemental feeding conditions, number of cows the bull is expected to service and distance required to travel during breeding. Ideally, bulls should have enough fat cover at the start of breeding so their ribs appear smooth across their sides. A body condition score 6 (where 1 = emaciated and 9 = very obese) is the target body condition prior to the breeding season. Sound feet and legs are very important because if they are unsound, this can result in the inability to travel and mount for mating. The general health of the bull is critical since sick, aged and injured bulls are less likely to mate and usually have lower semen quality. The external examination of the reproductive tract includes evaluation of the testes, spermatic cords and epididymis. Scrotal circumference is an important measure since it is directly related to the total mass of sperm producing tissue, sperm cell normality and the onset of puberty in the bull and his female offspring. Bulls with large circumference will produce more sperm with higher normality and also reach sexual maturity sooner. Examination of the external underline before and during semen collection will detect any inflammation, foreskin adhesions, warts, abscesses and penile deviations. The internal examination is conducted to detect any abnormalities in the internal reproductive organs. Also, be certain to ask your veterinarian about the need to test the bulls for the reproductive disease, trichomoniasis. The semen evaluation is done by examining a sample of the semen under a microscope. The veterinarian will estimate the percentage of sperm cells that are moving in a forward direction. This estimate is called “motility.” In addition, the sperm cells will be individually examined for proper shape or “morphology.” Less than 30% of the cells should be found to have an abnormal shape. Any bull meeting all minimum standards for the physical exam, scrotal size and semen quality will be classed as a “satisfactory” potential breeder. Many bulls that fail any minimum standard will be given a rating of “classification deferred.”

230 April 2013 • theshowcircuit.com

EVALUATION

For the breeding soundness evaluation to be successful, bulls should be evaluated 30 to 60 days before the start of breeding.

This rating indicates that the bull will need another test to confirm status. Mature bulls (that were listed as classification deferred) should be retested after four to six weeks. Mature bulls will be classified as unsatisfactory potential breeders if they fail subsequent tests. Young bulls that are just reaching puberty may be rated as “classification deferred,” and then later meet all of the minimum standards. Therefore caution should be exercised when making culling decisions based on just one breeding

soundness exam. Many producers work hard to manage their cows for high fertility. They may assume that the bulls will do their expected duties. However, it’s important to pay close attention to bulls to establish successful breeding.

SUMMIT is a very unique black baldie three quarter blood Maine bull. In 2012 we displayed Summit at the National Western were we had many great reviews from real cattlemen that complemented him for his overall skeletal correctness and his soundness. In the spring of 2012 we ran Summit on 20 first calf heifers threw May and early June, then he was moved to a different pasture and turned out with 19 cow/calf pairs for the remainder of June and July. My point being. Summit, while still a yearling bull ran on 39 head of cattle the summer of 2012. He continued to grow and pre form very well and his soundness held up perfectly. The decision was made for Summit to return to the National Western as a two year old, a feat not many are able to do... As you may have heard Summit was a huge hit in the yards at Denver! All of Americas top cattlemen are ‘IN’ in this bull. PROVEN ... The first Summit calves hit the ground in early February. Consistently weighing in the 70 - 75 range, with several reports in the mid 60’s. Most of these are out of first calf heifers. At this time most are black with a little white on their face. Summit works very well on Maine, Simm and Angus cattle, and being clean he’s a perfect choice for club calf type cows. Summit works especially well were Holde or Duff breeding is present. Also on Draft Pick and Irish whiskey cross cattle. POWER IN THE BLOOD ... Summit is backed by not one, but two of the best cows we own. His mother is a absolutely gorgeous black baldie Ali cow, moderate in her frame size, true on her feet and legs and perfectly square hipped, also has a great udder! Her first calf was kept back in the heard as a replacement heifer, her second was ‘Summit’ and her third was our top selling heifer at this years National Western Maine Sale. Summits Grandmother also travels our pastures. ‘613 Meyer’ is without question the best Meyer 734 cow we have ever owned. She too is also a beautiful black baldie cow with exceptional udder quality. ‘613’ also has the same square hip, wide pin set structure as her daughter and Summit. She carries more style and show ring presents than most Meyer’s. Three generations of baldies! THE HOTTEST

THING GOING!

Shelby is our dual purpose power bull. He combines all of the best Maine, Simmy, Angus quality’s it takes to build a great cow heard out of. He’s huge bodied, high performance oriented bull, that stands on a massive hoof and bone size. Shelby also brings fertility to the table, something I feel that’s been missing in this business for a long while now. He measured 40cm as a yearling, and spends very little time at the stud while putting up a large amount of semen. Shelby also carries the power to make steers out of freakier made club calf cows that need soft middles and that overall fat steer look put into them.

Contact Sojka Farms for semen

Semen will be shipped directly from Hawkeye Breeders. We will pay the shipping on orders of 50 or more units of any Sojka bulls.

At Sojka Farms we only run 150 cows. We have to make every one of them count. From what I’ve seen out of our Shelby calf crop, we will breed over 50% of our herd to him. To this date “Shelby’s” are coming out coal black with no white on them what so ever. They weigh a solid 85 - 95 pounds at birth and are square hipped with great bone and hair. I have several that will bring top dollar and some heifers that will not leave the farm. This bull can be viewed at the farm. If you are tired of “rolling the dice.” Use this bull! He is the real deal. - Grant Sojka

• Solo is sired by Wide Open. Wide Open is making powerful half bloods and he is really getting it done. This great May calf has the kind of rib shape, hip, bone and hair we want to make the next generation. He is really unique - POWER, SOUNDNESS, BALANCE, QUALITY and PEDIGREE out of a GREAT COW! • The dam of Solo is perhaps the most consistent producer of herdbull caliber cattle at Duello’s. She is a beautiful baldy Meyer 734 Granddaughter who also is the mother of the featured Irish Whiskey son of the 2011 Western Elite, that we lost prior to the sale in an untimely death. The first crop of Wide Open Sons averaged over $5,700 per head at DCC and to date every female born has been good enough to make the replacement pen. • His fresh genetics, power and athleticism has made him a favorite among purebred breeders and club calf producers alike. Wide Open’s pedigree traces to X339U on the top and bottom, plus Black Irish Kansas, Black Mick and 600U...maternal legends. • If you are looking to inject some maternal power into your cowherd without sacrificing eye appeal and performance, Wide Open is an absolute must use bull.
