By Katie Miller “I’ve always said we sell livestock on our family name,” Tom Farrer says. A name which three generations have worked tirelessly to ensure is backed by superior genetics, but more importantly is synonymous with honesty and integrity. With the fourth generation just getting old enough to lead show steers and drive barrows, the Farrers continue to look to the future, while always remembering their roots. Farrer Stock Farms was founded in 1947, when Bill and Betty Farrer received a couple of Spot gilts as a wedding gift from Betty’s parents. Soon, Bill gained a reputation as being one of the finest minds in the Spotted swine business, and the Farrer name began its long history of being associated with good livestock. “That makes you want to keep working hard,” Taylor Farrer, Bill’s grandson, says. “I know my Grandpa, whom I never got to meet, raised some of the best hogs in the country. That is what gets me going every day, because I want to be like he was.” Shorthorn cattle joined the Spot hogs in Royal Center, and the family continued to improve their stock. About the time Tom and Steve Farrer finished their junior livestock career, Farrer Stock Farms launched their now longest-running show calf and show pig auctions, which both mark their 44th annual sale, this year.

In 1972, the brothers A.I.ed their parents’ Shorthorn cows to imported exotic bulls to make show calves, before it was common practice in the industry. It must have worked, because in 1977, they raised the Champion Steer at the Indiana State Fair. This steer was the first of a long history of state and national show winners including Denver, San Antonio, Maryland State Fair and Michigan State Fair. The Farrers were some of the first swine producers to use artificial insemination, in 1978. In ’82, they started with embryo transfer, followed by IVF transfers in 2011, and in 2015, they cloned one of their most important herdsires, FSF Starburst. While the Farrer family has used various technology to improve their genetics through the years, today’s operation still sits firmly on the foundation it was built upon seven decades ago. Although the 300 head of cattle they run now consist of several breeds and some crossbreds designed to be club calf mamas, the majority still are Shorthorn and Shorthorn-influenced. While their 60 head of sows now include Duroc, Hampshire and crossbreds, there will never be a time when their barn doesn’t have good Spot gilts kept back to continue the next generation of their family’s tradition. Keeping all the wheels turning on this operation is truly a family effort. Grandma Betty Farrer still leaves water and cookies in the garage for the family, if they need a snack during their chores. Tom makes many of the breeding and management decisions, but he often asks his sons, Payton and Taylor, for their input – just like his father did

in the ‘70s. His wife, Lisa, grew up showing cattle. Today, her support and organization are paramount to the family’s success. She keeps all the cattle breed registrations and transfers in order for seven different breeds, on top of teaching school. Payton and Taylor both live nearby, but work off the farm. They often work well past dark to keep FSF going. The brothers both help with the family’s crop and hay operation. Payton is more interested in the cattle side of things. Together, with his wife, Kristen, and children, Kendalyn, Alexis and Kolton, they help with the family’s 300-head of cows. Taylor’s passion lies in the swine side. He and his wife, Kristen, work farrowing 60 head of sows, collecting boars, marketing their swine genetics and handling litter recordings, transfers and AI certificates. Bailey, their only daughter, moved to Oklahoma two years ago to join Elanco as a beef representative. She still makes it back for every sale and helps market FSF genetics in any way she can, whether it’s delivering semen and embryos to Southwestern customers or keeping the website up to date. Farrer Stock Farms is built to be a family legacy, and Tom takes pride in affording his children and grandchildren the same opportunities his parents gave him. “I’ve been able to continue doing what I enjoy doing, and I have three kids who are interested in their own direction and way of continuing some of that legacy, which is the same as what my dad and mom had to do,” Tom says. “You are proud when you hear that you’re considered an honest person to deal

with when you go states away. Then, you are humbled when you talk to someone an hour away, and they’ve never heard of us. It just shows you that you have a lot of work to do.”

family has seen several show ring trends come and go, yet their cow and sow herds have hardly wavered. When your genetics are sound, stout and efficient, you’re always on trend.

Working with one another day in and day out can come with its own set of challenges, but to the Farrers it has even greater rewards. Perhaps, one of their greatest rewards is learning from one another. Tom is a true stockman with a mind for breeding livestock.

“I’m really proud of the fact that we’ve been around so long and have never left,” Bailey says. “We have really stuck to what we started with. We focus on what we’re good at and where we’ve had success, and then we try to take that to another level. We have stuck to our roots and continued to improve on what our focus is. We don’t try to be everything and have everything. We just focus on what we want to be good at. Your reputation follows you and people come back to support us year after year.”

“My dad can talk five generations back on livestock,” Taylor says. “He is not only able to generate breed-improving livestock, but he can talk about them. I don’t care if it is cattle or hogs, but he can reach back and recall stories all the way back to the 1980s.” This steadfast commitment to genetic improvement has helped Farrer Stock Farms carve out a consistent type of livestock that are recognizable in such a competitive industry. If you were to look at a Shorthorn carrying an FSF herd prefix, you’d see a more moderate, structurally-sound calf standing on extra substance and bone, with a wide, square pin set and a little more thickness than most. This represents the years of breeding in each and every one of their cattle, which gives them this unique look and almost unrivaled consistency. It’s also the reason why so many of their Shorthorn sires go on to be greatly influential in the breed, such as Outrageous, FSF Starburst and FSF Bearcat. The same can be said about their Spotted swine. The foundation of Farrer Stock Farms has been and will always be efficiency and structural integrity. Replacement gilts must be able to lay down and farrow well-performing litters. The catch is these females also need to have the stoutness of feature and the show appeal to get their progeny noticed on a national stage. Through the decades, the Farrer

Although the third generation of Farrers are interested in blood lines, some of the greatest things their father taught them about Farrer Stock Farms have nothing to do with livestock. One such lesson is hard work. The Farrer kids many times didn’t get to pick the best cattle or pigs for their own 4-H projects. Theirs were usually what was left after their sales. “There were a lot of mornings, when we were young, that we went with dad or rode our bicycles to Grandmas to take care of our 4-H projects. We’d build forts in the sow lots or do our chores and help bring in cows,” Payton explains. Aside from the forts in the sow lots, the family still does many of the same chores together today. It’s a good thing they learned to work hard, because the livestock business is not easy. Working hard when times are tough takes a certain level of grit and determination that less and less people seem to have. “One of my dad’s favorite sayings is, ‘If it is easy, everyone would do it,’” Payton adds. “Raising livestock can really be turbulent at times. To me, when you think things can’t get any tougher or get any worse they do. That’s when

you learn perseverance. That’s when you stay the course.” Lastly, and most importantly, Tom has always stressed that you should treat customers like you would want to be treated. Arguably, it’s the Golden Rule, just as much as it is their commitment to their genetic program, which has made the Farrer name so recognizable. “I’ve had a lot of lessons learned because I’ve done a lot of things wrong, but I suppose the biggest thing I learned is that you’ve got to treat other people how you want them to treat you. If you do that consistently ,then you’ll have some success in this business,” Tom said. “That’s what gets you longevity in the business. I’ve seen a tremendous amount of people that go ahead of you and then fall behind because they didn’t have the same foundation to their business.”

Farrer

Although it’s hard to summarize 70 years of work with one sentence, Taylor might have: “Good livestock never goes out of style, and honest and hardworking people will always be there through the years.”

FSF Starburst and FSF Near Perfect typify the moderate, thick and sound type of Shorthorn genetics for which the Farrer name is renown.

F

or these two young ladies, being named royalty is more than a title that comes with a sash and a crown. The title comes with added responsibility to represent their breeds, advocate for agriculture and serve as a role model for younger exhibitors. The title comes with the honor to serve the breed they are passionate about, and it

comes with big shoes to fill from those who wore the crown before them. And the title comes with opportunity to travel the country, host receptions and meet other queens in the breed and teach them too. For Keegan Cassady and Annah Dobson, serving as royalty is another way that they keep busy both on and off the circuit.

Annah Dobson

Hometown: Johnson Creek, Wisconsin Age: 19 Current Title: National Hereford Queen When and Where were you Crowned: American Royal in Kansas City, MO on October 30, 2016 List some of your Royal duties: As NHQ I attend and assist at National Shows & Sales such as Denver, Louisville, Reno and Keystone. I also put on a Queen’s Tea at Junior Nationals as well as a service project and an auction basket. The majority of my duties are being a role model and spokesperson for this amazing breed of cattle. Species and breeds of livestock you show: Just my Herefords. What is your favorite show and why? My favorite show is Junior Nationals. I love meeting new people and being able to do so many different activities while spending a week doing what I love, showing cattle! It’s also a great time to spend with my family, as it is our family vacation. All-time favorite show animal and why? Zeus, he was my bred and owned steer 2 years ago. He is my favorite because he was the ugliest little calf in the world. Seriously! But he sure made some progress and ended up winning his class at the Wisconsin State Fair, and was 4th Overall Wisconsin Bred Steer. He will always have a special place in my heart. Favorite show memory: Winning Champion Hereford Steer at the 2013 Wisconsin State Fair. Least favorite show-day or daily around the ranch task: Filling out entry forms for shows. What is your favorite part about wearing a crown and banner: I love meeting kids of all ages and hearing about their cows and their passion for showing. It reminds me of why I love it, and why I love representing the cattle industry but more importantly, Herefords!

Favorite TV Show: It’s a tie between Grey’s Anatomy and NCIS Favorite book/author: J.K Rowling….I love Harry Potter! Favorite activities outside of the show ring: Watching movies and playing cards What do you want to do for a career? When I grow up… which is only a few years away, I want to become a speaker or advocate for agriculture. I would love to use my experiences to motivate people to use their talents in agriculture and inspire them to chase their dreams. Favorite food: Ice cream What is your pet peeve? When people don’t use their blinker Who is someone you want to thank for helping you succeed in the show ring? I want to thank my Grandpa Reinke. He is the reason I started showing Herefords. Without my first steer 13 years ago I would not have fallen in love with cattle, nor Herefords and I especially would not be as involved as I am today. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without his guidance and support since day 1, and I thank him for always helping me in and out of the show ring.

Keegan Cassady

Hometown: Normal, IL Age: 19 Current Title: Miss American Angus When and Where were you Crowned/Named: November 2016, Angus Convention in Indianapolis List some of your Royal duties: I organize and pass out awards, speak at royalty events, and represent the Angus breed at all the major Angus shows and events across the country. Species and breeds of livestock you show: Angus cattle What is your favorite show and why? My favorite show is the National Junior Angus Show! There’s so many activities going on all week between the show, contests, mentoring program, basketball tournament, and educational clinics. I am usually exhausted by the end of the week, but the friendships and memories made make it the best week of the year. All-time favorite show animal and why? My favorite show animal was my heifer last year, Khloe. She was a nightmare to show! She would throw her head the whole time we were in the ring and drag me all around, but I still loved her! She was a really good heifer, and I did very well in the show ring with her. Even though she was very hard to show, she was really sweet at home, and, as every showman knows, we just had a special bond that I’ll never forget. Favorite show memory: The National Junior Angus Association has an award called the Crystal Award that goes to one boy and one girl that gain the most points in the contests at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). I absolutely love the contests at junior nationals, so winning the Crystal Award had been a goal of mine for a long time. At the NJAS in 2015, closing ceremonies were almost over. I had done well in the contests, but I didn’t think I had done my best. They were reading the description of the award, and I leaned over to my friend and said, “I don’t think this is my year.” To my surprise, the next think the announcer said was my name. It was such a shock at the time, but now I remember it as one of my favorite moments because I was able to achieve a goal I had worked towards for a long time. Least favorite show-day or daily around the ranch task: Breaking down and washing after the show

What is your favorite part about wearing a crown and banner: Every time I put on my red blazer, crown, and sash, I am reminded of all the women that stood in my shoes before me. I feel like I am a part of a long legacy, and it makes me feel very proud and humbled to serve as Miss American Angus. Favorite TV Show: Keeping Up with the Kardashians Favorite book/author: The Fault in Our Stars Favorite activities outside of the show ring: Spending time with friends and family, reading, bargain shopping What do you want to do for a career? I’m still unsure, but I am looking at a career in agriculture policy or law. Favorite food: Certified Angus Beef ® Filet (of course!) What is your pet peeve? Loud chewing Who is someone you want to thank for helping you succeed in the show ring? My dad got me involved in the Angus breed, bought me my show heifers, and took me to shows across the country. My mom has been the best queen mom around! She helps me stay organized and makes sure I always look professional. My show career wouldn’t be possible without the Dameron family and Cody Bock as well. They have helped me since day one, and my show career wouldn’t have been possible without their continuous support and guidance.

Summer is upon us and the drought has effected parts of SD severely. Please keep those farmers and ranchers in your prayers as we pray for rain. The next couple weeks are full of shows and then we are onto State Fair. The 2017 SDJPS awards presentation will again be during the SD State Fair after the team fitting contest on Sunday, Sept. 3rd at 7:30PM. There will be a supper served by the SD Beef Industry Council and other sponsors. Stay safe in your travels! Sincerely, Audra Scheel, SDJPS Advisor

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER

388 August 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting

The Real Value of National Junior Shows Leslie and I just returned home from participating in two regional junior cattle shows and we leave tomorrow for a national junior show. Consequently, I am hurried to put my thoughts together for an article Sharla informs me was due last Monday. (Incidentally, I greatly enjoy my limited contact with Sharla- I have found her most professional and to have great editorial talent.) I was going to write an article on the value of keeping open cows vs. replacing open cows with heifers, but that article will have to wait. Several years ago, I cannot remember when , but I think it was in the early 2000s or late 1990s, I wrote an article titled “Investing in Children or Why We Show Cattle.” That article was well received as I received many favorable comments from folks across the country. I thought about asking Sharla to do a reprint, but my current thoughts may be more timely. Most people enjoy the cattle shows at the Junior Nationals, regardless of which breed is featured. The Bred and Owned competitions are important displays of the economic value young people can develop over time through the purchase of an open heifer calf and keeping that calf through her reproductive lifetime. I will never forget the words of my 4-H Leader who stated that if a 4-Her purchased one heifer calf each year she/he was in 4-H and kept all the heifer calves born during their ten years in 4-H, upon entering college the young man/woman would have a herd of 25 cows to sell to pay for college. A fact still true today. The Owned Division of Junior National heifer shows highlight the economically important segment of the cattle industry known as the seedstock industry. Take just a moment and think about how good the class winners, division champions and the national champion heifers are in the Junior National Shows. These cattle are great representations of their respective breeds. Many of these heifers compete at

the National level in open shows across the country. To me, there is little more exciting than watching my daughter compete for a regional or national championship with a heifer she and I have developed together in our own show barn, spending numerous hours together, working hair, training the heifers to stand, correctly feeding and washing, and dreaming about what if – together. Quality time in the barn … and I know thousands of families across our great country enjoy the same experiences. However, perhaps the greatest aspect of the breed associations’ national junior heifer shows is not the heifer show but the academic contests in which the juniors compete. Theses competitions can include showmanship, cattlemen’s quiz, quiz bowl, sales talk, public speaking, judging contests, professional interview/resume presentation, photography competition, and sire summary tests. Some breed associations offer all of these competitions; other breed associations offer some of the competitions. In some associations, a selected number of academic competitions are required in order to show cattle. In other associations, all the academic competitions are optional and participation is voluntary. In some associations, a young person can compete in the academic contests without the requirement of showing a heifer. The purpose of this article is not to debate whether or not the academic competitions should be required or voluntary. My reflection at this time is to compliment and commend the many breed associations and their boards of directors for making the national junior heifer shows a possibility and a reality for so many juniors. The number of exhibitors in the Jr. National programs is growing exponentially. This is a great thing. While only a small portion of the junior exhibitors at these regional and national shows (I recall it may

be around 30%) will actually select cattle production as a career; the values the other 70% receive from their participation are invaluable to animal agriculture. The values of self-esteem, commitment to task, the will to compete, how to be a good winner as well as a good loser, dedication to purpose, acceptance of responsibility, an understanding of animal welfare vs animal rights, and the art of animal husbandry to name a few are quality characteristics that when embraced help form the moral and ethical fiber of the country we call America. Those young people who grow up in our National Junior Heifer Show programs but chose not to own cattle in adult life will be a positive voice for the cattle industry and animal agriculture among the 99% of Americans not directly involved in production agriculture. I could write about this subject for a longtime but in ending my comments in this article let me emphasize:

There is no better way to teach life’s

responsibilities

than

through our national breed associations’ junior show programs. Therefore, the next time a junior show coordinator asks for a monetary contribution, give generously. Your donation will be rewarded. Editors Note: If you have questions about this topic, please feel free to contact Dr. Walker at 309-963-4913, pwalker@ilstu.edu or 578 Old Peoria Rd, Danvers, IL 61732

Three Aces Cattle Company is a Sure Bet When Raising Cattle and Kids By Shelia Grobosky

Lydell Meier played his cards right to end up with a winning hand. He and his brothers grew up in the Texas Hill County near Stonewall, and he started showing cattle at a young age. His dad was the farm and ranch manager for the LBJ National Park, and managed the Herford ranch owned by former President Lyndon B. Johnson. Lydell’s passion for the cattle business developed as he showed Hereford heifers and steers, competing at the Texas Majors in the spring, as well as a large district show in their area. His dad also started a fitting service, where Lydell and older brother, Shane, got good experience each spring, halter breaking, feeding and clipping bulls for two producers. They were getting the bulls ready for two shows and sales. “It was a big undertaking for us at such a young age,” Lydell says. “We had 30 to 40 yearling Hereford bulls to get ready for two shows and sales.” And now, Lydell is teaching his three kids the same work ethic and responsibilities his that his dad instilled into him. “I think it allows them to mature mentally a lot faster, and interact with adults a lot better,” Lydell says of raising his

family on the farm in Tennessee. Taking a Bet After Lydell gradua t e d from Texas Tech, he was working as a loan officer. But remained interested and active in the cattle business. He’d been out of school three years, when his older brother, Shane, was preparing to head East with Doug Satree to the Atlantic National Angus Show in Timonium, Maryland, over Memorial Day Weekend. Lydell had never been to a cattle show East of Louisville, and offered to go along to help Doug. He’d even work for just a plane ticket and a hotel room, just for the opportunity. Little did he know, he would meet his queen of heart that weekend, Holly Gamble. “That was in May of 2001, and three or four months later, I was moving to Tennessee,” Lydell adds. Holly was born and raised in Clinton, Tenn., where she was an active member of the Tennessee Junior Angus Associa-

tion and National Junior Angus Association. She started showing Angus when she was just 6 years old. She says some of her best memories are with her dad traveling to different shows.

“The quality time with the cattle and at shows with my family are times I will forever cherish,” Holly says. She along with her brother, Ben, and dad, John, owned and operated Gamble Angus Farm, and still own two funeral homes and a cemetery in Anderson County, Tenn. It was challenging to balance the work and management of two growing family businesses. After Lydell moved to Tennessee, he started working at Gamble Angus Farm. He and Holly married, and today have three children – Andrew, 12; Annie, soon to be 11; and Alyssa, 10. All three children enjoy working with and showing their cattle.

Lydell, Holly and their kids Andrew, Annie and Alyssa Meier are carrying on family traditions of hard work and good cattle. Straight to Success While Holly and Lydell continued to grow their family, they also grew their cow herd. In 2014, Gamble Angus Farm dispersed. But it wasn’t because they were finished in the cattle business.

about 50 of each breed of cow, and have goals for to hit a larger demographic area with a larger customer base with three high-quality breeds. The three kids each show, but they will focus on showing a breed that they don’t market heavily for that particular year. For instance, this year, the kids had outstanding Red Angus cattle, so the Red Angus were shown more, and marketed less.

“We were ready for a change, and wanted to become more diversified,” Lydell explains. And that is how Three And speaking of marketing, Holly and Aces Cattle Company was formed. Today, the Meier family runs about 150 Angus, Lydell have set a strategic marketing schedule using online sales to maximize Red Angus and Simmental cows. their reach. They will host an online sale “I felt the times were changing, and the first Monday in December featuring people were not as breed focused as fall yearling bulls of all three breeds. they were seven or eight years ago. Today, they run pect or herd sire.

“We have always felt like Show Circuit did the best job when it came to advertising,” Lydell adds. “We have designed our marketing schedule around them.” A Full House – and Bright Future. Although Lydell never attended or competed at a junior national as a youth, he is making up for it now. He did travel the Texas majors circuit, and showed the champion Hereford steer at the 1994 Houston Livestock Show. Today, Holly and Lydell and their children attend numerous junior shows across the country each summer – something Lydell said is tiring as they make their way around the summer circuit, but also worth it to see their children and customers succeed. At the recent North American Junior Red Angus Event, Andrew showed the Supreme Female, which had first won Grand Champion Cow-Calf pair. Annie also exhibited the Reserve Champion Bred-and-Owned Bull. “There’s not a better way to bring up kids than around the livestock industry,” Holly said. “Everyone loves to win, but it isn’t the times I won that I remember the most. It’s the memories and friendships of the families we’ve met over the years that mean the most. People need to cherish those memories and the people you meet along the way because you never know when the friends you make could be gone.” “It’s tough.” Lydell adds. “We want to avoid confrontation and not lose customers, while watching our own kids be successful.” And it’s a sure bet that with Andrew, Annie and Alyssa as the Three Aces, that success is going to pay off with hard work and dedication in the future. Lydell hopes that at least one of his kids will want to continue the family tradition. As the Meier kids mature into teenagers, Lydell would like to develop a legacy for them to continue.
