Tail Bag
™
Protection for your precious tail hair! • A Daily Hair Care Must! Use the Tail Bag every time you operate your Roto Brush, protects the tail from being caught and pulling out valuable hair. Safety! • Show Day Grooming - great while grooming legs to prevent matting of tail hair caused by the over-spray of adhesives and touch-ups. Surprisingly, the weight of the tail bag essentially eliminates tail switching. • Easy on. Easy off. Cinches on tail with a draw string & stays tight with a barrel lock. • Constructed of stretch spandex material that conforms to the size of almost any tail.
HYBRID HEAT Neck Sweat ™
This NEW, composite sweating system features the benefits of neoprene and the durability of leather all in one deluxe unit. The removable neoprene lining is constructed of the same closed cell SBR copolymer neoprene material as our popular BLACK HEAT Neck Sweat. This material has been scientifically proven to be ideal to reach maximum sweating potential for cattle. It is sewn with a no-fray fabric binding around the outer edges to prevent tearing. The durable leather casing surrounds the neoprene to provide support and protection. Velcro attaches the neoprene to the leather, holding it firmly in place, yet allowing it to be removable for easy cleaning or replacement. Available in two sizes.
Sullivan’s

Champions aren’t bred and born overnight. They’re nurtured and refined over decades. I appreciate what it takes to get there, and I’m patient enough to see it through no matter what. For the same reason, I trust Andis clippers and trimmers. After 90 years in the industry, they know what works, and what I expect when preparing to show a champion, like the AGC Super 2 Speed clipper and blocking blade, as well as the full complement of interchangeable blades. I know cattle, and Andis knows me.

LIVESTOCK SUPPLEMENT & CONDITIONER The easy supplement for show-stopping results. Blue ribbons aren’t easy to come by – but fortunately, premium nutrition can be simple. By feeding your animal just a few ounces of ShowBloom a day, you give them essential protein, vitamins and minerals. The all-natural brewer’s yeast formula is palatable and increases digestibility and feed efficiency to create a shiny coat, clear eyes and improved muscling and hoof quality. Those are results that you – and the judges – can appreciate.

gray Show Cattle & Umbarger Show Feeds are excited to join forces and bring you a monthly article, in hopes to help juniors across the country. We hope the variety of topics brought to you in each issue are found to be beneficial and that juniors can find ways to incorporate them in to their very own programs.
Starting on the right foot The fall is an exciting time a year as it brings a new set of calves into barns all across the mid-west. While the fall is an exciting time for the buyer and seller it can be extremely stress full to young cattle. It is important to make sure your calves get off to good start as they transition to a new environment. The best way to do this is to make sure we keep calves on feed and healthy through periods of high stress. The best way we have found to accomplish this goal is feed diets designed to keep the “gut” functioning at a high level. These diets are usually higher in fiber and contain some type of yeast fermentation product. Primer Plus is the product of choice for us during this time. Primer Plus is a higher fiber diet that is fortified with stress levels of Amaferm and Bovatec. This is a great feed for getting calves ready for sales and to use as you transition them to their new homes. Another product to consider is a Stress Tub, such as the VitaCharge Stress Tub from VitaFerm. This is a 50# tub that is designed to provide calves with stress levels of vitamins, minerals, MOS, and Amaferm. These types of products are easy to use and should in every pen of cattle during the fall. Remember while you are excited and eager to start working your new calves this fall, the calves are adjusting to a completely new routine and environment. If you keep that in mind as you start this fall and pay attention to small details you’ll be sure to get off to a great start! As your fall search continues, be sure to visit grayshowcattleinc.com to seek out details for the upcoming Oct. 6th Phone Private Treaty sale, with information to follow on the 2nd Annual Reloaded Steer Sale on C/W Sales. If you have questions regarding Umbarger & their elite product line, call your local Umbarger representative or their home office at 317-422-5195.

stock show
diva
{by jen hummel}
These days, everyone is into a little do-it-yourself when it comes to home décor. Pinterest has encouraged us to roll up our sleeves, get out the hot glue gun and channel our inner Martha Stewart. Whether it’s breathing new life into old trinkets or giving something new a vintage twist, it’s all about the D-I-Y. So what does Martha Stewart have to do with livestock? How many of us have boxes, drawers and cupboards full of old stock show ribbons, banners and trophies just sitting around collecting dust? Or, for some of us, these mementos of our showing days may still be in a tub in the attic at our parents’ place. Whatever the case may be, it’s time to wipe off the dust, clean up the clutter and get crafting. Check out the ideas below for a little “upcycle” inspiration.
Sarah Moore of Jerseyville, Ill., shows Shorthorn cattle and Polled Dorset sheep, and decided to make a ribbon
wreath for her Junior National arts and crafts project this summer. “I had lots of ribbons just sitting in boxes and decided to make something with them,” she says. “I found this idea on the Internet and thought I’d try it.”

up·cy·cle [uhp-sahy-kuhl] verb, up·cy·cled, up·cy·cling, noun verb (used with object)
1. to process (used goods or waste material) so as to produce something that is often better than the original: I upcycled a stained tablecloth into curtains.
Show mom
Pam Herzog, Ind., also tried her hand
at the ribbon wreath. She made one of these for
each of her two sons, who show cattle and pigs. Pam says she has many other DIY plans for a tote full of ribbons when she finds the time.
.Jennifer Cox has a really unique ribbon DIY story. During her reign as National Shorthorn Lassie Queen from 2011-2012, Jen-
nifer noticed there were always ribbons leftover after the shows. Because the year of the show was printed on the ribbons, they were typically just thrown away. “I asked if I could have them to make something, and they said yes,” Jennifer says. After looking for ideas on the Internet, she made this quilt, which was then auctioned off at NAILE last fall as a fundraiser for the Lassie Queen organization.
Show mom
Cari Butcher from Indiana is truly a stock show
DIY diva. She has made everything from ribbon pillows to trophy top bottle stoppers. “I decided to start these projects because, like many people, the trophies and ribbons I had won over the years were just gathering dust at my parents’ house,” Cari says. “I got ideas from Pinterest, then put my own spin on them.” A couple of the easier projects Cari has done, for those who might not have a strong crafting gene, are the show stick wall display and ribbon jar below. “When my son started showing, we wanted a way to display his ribbons in his room and thought a show stick would be a neat way to do that – then we just added his name with painted wood letters to create a unique wall display,” Cari explains.
With the holiday season just around the corner, we could all use a little inspiration from 13-year-old
Erin Easterling of Arkansas,
who used her Grand and Reserve Champion ribbons to decorate
the Christmas tree in her bedroom. This proves that in stock show households, purple is the new color of Christmas! Ribbons can also be used to add a fun, sentimental touch to old mirrors and windows.
Laura DeOrnellas attached ribbon rosettes
around the frame of a mirror for her daughter, Shelby, who shows market lambs. (not pictured)
Mallory Early made a special gift for her
friend by displaying her horse show ribbons in an old window. This is a unique, fun way to display ribbons anywhere in your home! There are so many unique ways to show off your stock show accolades, and the ideas above prove that you don’t have to be a Martha Stewart to do it! We’d love to see more of your DIY diva projects – just send them to jen@theshowcircuit.com for a chance to be featured on our Facebook page!

What’s it like to be a
Cattle buyer What is your Background? i grew up in Weld County, Colorado. My family had registered Polled Hereford cattle when i was very young, but sold the cows prior to my direct involvement with them. i grew up around the cattle business through my father’s involvement. it was not until i got to Colorado state university (Csu) that i became interested in and involved with the beef cattle industry. i attended Csu in the early ’90s and received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural Business. at Csu, i was a member of aGr fraternity, on the meats judging team, a member of Csu’s NaMa (National ag Marketing association) chapter and an officer in Block & Bridle club. Would you descriBe for us What you really do. My job title is very simple and very accurate … i’m a cattle buyer. i work for a company called Meyer Natural Foods and am responsible for the area of northwestern Kansas, southwestern Nebraska and northeastern Colorado. i buy cattle for our all Natural angus brand which entails working closely with feedlots in my area to identify cattle that can be documented to have been raised from birth without the use of any antibiotics, synthetic hormones or any form of animal by-products. in addition to being Natural, we also need to be able to identify cattle as being half angus – we accept both red angus and Black angus cattle in our program. once we identify a group of cattle that meets our specs, the feedlot manager and i will write a contract specifying the premium structure and delivery time of the cattle to the packing plant. i, along with my fellow cattle buyers, are responsible for ensuring that we have enough cattle for each month of the year to meet the beef sales demands of our customers. hoW did you get into this line of Work? since my experiences on the meats judging team at Csu, i’ve realized how important each segment of the industry is in producing a good piece of beef for the customer to enjoy. i knew that i wanted to work within a system where the efforts of the producers and value created in the product could be shared with all parties involved. i was very fortunate to have made the contact with Meyer through my previous position as the commercial marketing director for the red angus association of america. When offered a chance to come to work for the Meyer Natural angus brand, it was an opportunity that i believed fit right into what i had envisioned i was looking for. What do you like aBout your joB? Without a doubt it is the people that i work with. it does not matter what job you end up with, there are going to be days that it is very challenging and difficult. However, when you are doing something you love and are able to work with really good people, it makes the tough days a little easier to get through. as a whole, cattle producers are just a great group of people! the other part of my job that i really like is knowing that i am a part of a system that is producing an end product that the consumer is asking for, because at the end of the day we should all be about selling more beef! What are the toughest challenges for What you do? in our business, as is the case with more and more industries all the time, we are being required to document and verify at a much deeper level certain practices that our producers do, because of a general lack of understanding by the consuming public. the statics are very accurate – the majority of the people in the united states have little to no practical understanding of what happens on a farm or ranch. they are continually bombarded by messages from activist groups that make producers out to be terrible and greedy people. therefore, you see grocery store and fast food chains developing “standards” as to what they will expect of the producers who are responsible for growing the produce and meat they purchase. although many things in these standards are common, everyday practices that most all producers already do, there are some of the standards that are a little more extreme. it cannot be said enough … we must do a better job of telling our story and setting the record straight with the consumer or it will just continue to get more difficult to stay in business. do you need a college degree in your profession? i have worked with many cattle buyers in the course of my career that did not attend college, so it is possible. With that said, i do believe that having a college degree is much more than just the studying and exams it takes to get it. i believe the college experience is about the friendships and relationships you build and the activities that you have an opportunity to participate in. i traveled very extensively in college either on judging team trips, leadership development conferences or attending Block & Bridle club national conventions. i probably gained as much from these events and activities as i did in the classroom. your studies are important and you learn a lot of valuable
Blake W. angell
Cattle Buyer | Meyer Natural Foods ellis . KaNsas information, but you also can gain so much more by attending college. What is a typical day on the joB like for you? a typical day for me is spent in my pick-up driving to my feed yard customers to look at cattle and talking on my cell phone. our company harvests cattle 52 weeks a year, so i am constantly looking at cattle that we had contracted for the immediate delivery time slot to make sure they are still on schedule, while also looking at newly purchased cattle that will be ready six to eight months from now and determining their eligibility and slotting them for the appropriate delivery time. i also will receive the carcass data results from the previous week’s cattle and provide that to my feed yard customers and answer any questions that they may have in regards to the outcomes. every set of cattle that comes through our program requires an extensive paper trail and documentation, so i am constantly making sure that all the required paperwork is in order on all my cattle prior to harvest. What Would most surprise a student aBout your career? the paperwork – although we are able to do more and more with technology, we still require an enormous amount of documentation and record keeping. even though i carry a smart phone and laptop, in our business we still have to record things the old fashion way! anything you Wish someone Would have told you When you Were in school? i have come to the conclusion that we succeed in life for one primary reason: because i was very fortunate to have received some extremely good advice while in school. the one that i was most thankful for was the encouragement to get involved in more than just your studies. the activities i was involved in opened a world of doors and opportunities that i would have never had the chance to experience if i would have stayed in my apartment and just went to parties. My travel experiences in college really sparked my interest in traveling even more. one of the most valuable things i took away from all my traveling was learning how people do the same thing in different ways across this country. in part due to my travel experience in college, i have spent the majority of my professional career traveling all across this country and meeting some incredible people along the way and seeing some beautiful country. i never realized what getting involved would have meant when i was in school, but now 20 years later my experiences continue as i will be traveling to russia in the fall of 2013 as part of a delegation to assess the current state of the russian cattle industry. don’t be afraid to get involved!

announcements Michael Bradley
to lead the arizona National livestock Show as executive director
After completing a national search, the Arizona National Livestock Show has named Michael Bradley, Granite Bay, CA, as the new executive director. The Arizona National Livestock Show is the largest Livestock Show in the Southwest annually attracting exhibitors from more than 19 states. It is a western tradition that began in 1948 for the Grand Canyon State that also produces a prestigious and highly successful Horse Show held at West World equine complex in Scottsdale, AZ. “The success and future of the Arizona National Livestock Show are in the very capable hands of an experienced leader who is highly regarded within the nation’s fairs and expositions industry. We are excited to have Mr. Bradley as our new Director and welcome him to our Arizona National family,” said Jim Loughead, President, ANLS. Bradley hails from California and has developed an international reputation for creating the nation’s most innovative livestock and agricultural showcases. His exposition talents are diversified having created and directed expansive outdoor entertainment venues, premier wine and food events and rodeos in addition to museum-quality exhibit programs. ” I have known Michael for many years and admire his enthusiasm and dedication for agriculture. He demonstrates vision, creativity and passion in all he sets out to do and we will truly miss him in California. He is a great selection for this leadership position and Arizona agriculture is gaining a valuable friend,” stated Karen Ross, Secretary, California Department of Food and Agriculture. Long known as an innovator, The Livestock Market Digest declared that he was one of 25 individuals, businesses or organizations who are making a difference for the American Livestock Industry. His work is well known within the Western Fairs Association, International Association of Fairs and Expositions and the North American Livestock Show and Rodeo Managers Association. Bradley has strong ties to all of agriculture and affiliate industries having dedicated 28 years of management experience with the California State Fair and during the past five years with the California Farm Bureau Federation.
OhiO cattleMeN’S aSSOciatiON aNNOuNceS BeSt Of the Buckeye PrOgraM! Ohio seedstock breeders will have an enhanced marketing opportunity through the Best of the Buckeye program beginning in the 2014 show season, announced the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) at the 2013 Ohio State Fair. The Best of the Buckeye program, hosted by OCA in conjunction with the Ohio Beef Expo and the Ohio State Fair, will recognize top-placing Ohio born and raised calves, along with the breeder and exhibitor, in each breed division at the two shows. Thanks to generous sponsors, $45,000 will be given through premiums, scholarships and awards. This year’s sponsor are Green Oak Farms, heifer division; Steve R. Rauch, steer division; and Franklin Equipment, scholarship. The program was formed to provide Ohio seedstock breeders an additional marketing opportunity, create a source for moderately priced show steers and heifers by providing a program with awards and prestige, and to attract new participants interested in showing at the Ohio Beef Expo and/or the Ohio State Fair. Eligible nominations for Best of the Buckeye are registered cattle that were calved in Ohio. ET calves are eligible if they were calved in Ohio, and breeders and exhibitors must be OCA members and in good standing with OCA. Exhibitors must be eligible for the Ohio Beef Expo and Ohio State Fair junior shows and be an Ohio resident. As the Best of the Buckeye committee finalizes details in the upcoming months, they encourage Ohio breeders as they sell cattle this fall to make note that calves sold to Ohio youth may be eligible and nominated for the program. Nominations can also be made post-sale, and families can nominate calves they’ve raised and plan to show. The deadline for Best of the Buckeye nominations is January 15 at $25 per head, which is paid by the breeder. Nomination information will be available on the OCA website, ohiocattle.org/best-of-the-buckeye. FRESH SHOW RING EXHIBITORS CATTLE HEIFER RIB FAT SHOW BARN THICKNESS 250 September/October 2013 • theshowcircuit.com

Several years ago, I wrote an article explaining why, oftentimes, terms describing cattle were overused and inappropriate. A term I heard in the show ring this summer, used far too many times and by far too many judges, was the word “fresh” to describe show heifers. So, what is a fresh heifer? What makes one heifer fresher than another? Yes, I am being somewhat hypocritical, as I sometimes use the term myself. Usually, fresh implies one heifer is trimmer, carrying less body condition (fat) than

which brings me to the point of this article.

what’s your BRAND Honing in on standing out By Kindra Gordon
252 September/October 2013 • theshowcircuit.com
C
attlemen know that a brand on livestock signifies who the owner is, and because of this, everyone wants their own unique brand. After all, you wouldn’t want your livestock to be confused with the neighbors.
Similarly, in the marketing world, Roger Brooks says branding – and standing out in the crowd – is essential for an entity to survive. Brooks specializes in helping small towns and communities brand themselves to be successful in the tourism industry, but his branding advice can carryover and be applied to cattle operations and agribusiness as well. Brooks notes that today, we are inundated with marketing and advertising campaigns. He says that, on average, most of us are exposed to nearly 5,000 marketing messages each day – which has created an environment where 97% of these messages are essentially ineffective. As a result, he says, “Competition [for customers’ dollars] has never been more fierce.” The good news? There are things you can do to make yourself and your business stand out in the crowd. identify your Brand An important method to cut through the marketing clutter, according to Brooks, is to “get into the branding game.” He emphasizes that having a logo or slogan alone is not a brand. “Those are simply an exclamation point on your marketing message,” he explains.
He suggests asking yourself a series of questions to help identify your niche and, ultimately, your brand: • What is the one thing that puts you and/or your business on the map? • What do you offer that people can’t get elsewhere? • How does your product set you apart from others? • Why should they buy yours instead of someone elses? It is important to find and promote whatever it is that makes you different or better, Brooks says. He adds, “If you can fit anyone else’s business name into your ad and it still rings true, then start over. You need to keep working to identify your niche.” WHat’s your WHy? Additionally, Brooks stresses that “why” someone should buy something closes the sale as opposed to telling them “what” to buy.
As An AdditionAl mArketing tip, Brooks shares a quote by famous advertising guru David Ogilvy: “Your ad headline is read five times more than the body copy. When you’ve written your headline, you’ve spent 80% of your marketing dollar.” So, Brooks says, “When you write a headline, evoke an emotion and make a statement.”
A brand, Brooks says, is what people think of you and your operation. “It’s a perception – a feeling. It’s what they think as they drive by, or what they read about you, or hear from others through word of mouth,” he explains. “With a brand, you must set yourself apart from everyone else. That’s the essence of branding.” Brooks says a common mistake in branding is trying to be all things to all people. He contends that, “If your brand stands for everything – you stand for nothing.”
“Tell the world why, then who, where and what,” he says. “What doesn’t close the sale. Instead, sell the advantage first. Tell me why I should choose you over anyone else.” To illustrate this point, he cites some iconic marketing taglines: The Army’s Be All You Can Be; McDonald’s You Deserve A Break Today and Loreal’s Because You’re Worth It. “Evoke an emotion to pull people in, and they’ll remember you. Sell the experience, not the business,” he advises.
“Avoid trying to offer something for everyone,” he continues. “Trying to please everyone all the time is a recipe for failure. You must narrow your focus.”

The Complete Guide to
HUNTING WILD BOAR AND JAVELINA
T
he author’s description of his new book: “The Complete Guide to Hunting Wild Boar and Javelina” details the history, habits and habitat of North America’s second-most popular game animal and the Southwest’s smallest big game animal. Included are biological information, hunt methods and tactics, rifle and ammunition choices, and archery suggestions from the nation’s top hunters, game biologists, outfitters and outdoor writers.” written?
Okay. That’s nice. But what’s the book about and why was it
While I’ve known Gayne for more than 10 years – hunted with him several times, spent time with him at the Dallas Safari Club show each year and talk via phone weekly – Gayne, I have to say, is sometimes a bit off the wall. Consider his penchant for hunting in the hottest, nastiest, humid areas in the world while scoffing at a nice pheasant hunt in the cool, clean air in the Dakotas. Gayne would rather hunt in the heat of the Amazon jungles where all manner of deadly critters from scorpions to snakes can bite your backside and inflict horrible consequences. Gayne doesn’t write the stereotypical story about “me and Bob went deer hunting,” or “how I killed the buck of a lifetime.” His writing style is crisp and fresh and free of the old-time outdoor writer “hackisms.” He paints word pictures about the subject that are a joy to read, while educating the reader at the same time. Think history and fun when reading Gayne. Regarding quirkiness, it would only make sense that Gayne would author this book on wild hogs and javelina because, well, they are kind of off the wall in the big game category – just like Gayne. But make no mistake, after reading “The Complete Guide to Hunting Wild Boar and Javelina” you will be … enriched. And ready to go kill some porkers. So I asked Gayne, “Why a book on mangy old wild pigs?” And he told me, “I think they’re neat. They can be formidable adversaries when encountered up close and personal. And besides, nobody else has ever written a book about wild hogs. How many boring whitetail deer books are out there?” Good point. Thousands of the latter and all with a sameness that makes you wish you hadn’t bought the latest guide to deer hunting. He tells me there are 5 to 6 million wild hogs in the U.S. and 50% of them live in his native Texas. They inflict millions and millions of dollars of agri-

cultural damage every year – to the point that the state of Texas is going to pay hunters to come down and kill them! There’s another good reason why Gayne wrote this book. And you’re in luck because “The Complete Guide to Hunting Wild Boar and Javelina” is available now in Kindle format, so you can read and harvest all of the knowledge that he has gathered over his hunting career, plus that which he uncovered during his tireless research for this book. What you’re going to learn: • Science of wild hogs • Origin of wild hogs (some Spanish, some Russian, some domestic and the intermingled) • Biology (wild hogs are breeding fast – the hands-down champions of wild procreation) • Behavior of wild hogs (mostly devious, destructive and oft dangerous) • Weapons (everything from rifles to shotguns to archery gear to bang sticks to knives to spears to pig stickers for the really brave) • Hunting techniques (where and when and what time of day and how) • Hunting gear for wild hogs (what to take in way of lights, shooting sticks, gun cases, backpacks, camo, binos, blinds and stands) • Butchering wild hogs • Wild hog trophy mounts (taxidermy) • Wild hog leather (as strange as it may sound, wild hogs make wonderful leather) • Stuff that will get ya’ while hunting wild hogs (poisonous snakes, bugs, thorns, assorted fevers. It’s all here with best medical advice on how to get over whatever got ya’. Valuable stuff) • Where to hunt wild hogs (this is specially useful because Gayne lays out a state by state, outfitter by outfitter contact list with names, addresses and phone numbers to make it easy for any would-be wild hog hunting luminary to succeed at the sport) This is about as complete a book as I have ever read about hunting any wild game animal. I wish someone had written a similar book about elk hunting before I wore my knees out hunting those fools for 40 years! Wild hog hunting presents a tremendous opportunity to any outdoorsman or woman, or child for that matter, who wants to hunt yearround. There is no season on wild hogs. There’s no limit. There are lots of them. And farmers and ranchers universally hate them! Wild hog hunting is just a kick. And if you smack a few smaller ones, say 150 to 200 lbs., the meat is excellent; totally different than domestic pork, but every bit as good if not better.

State of the BirdS report
t
private landowners’ contributions
he fourth State of the Birds Report, released today, highlights the enormous contributions private landowners make to bird and habitat conservation, as well as opportunities for increased contributions, according to Ducks Unlimited.
Private landowners, organizations and corporations, including 2 million ranchers and farmers and approximately 10 million woodland owners, own and manage roughly 60% of the land area in the United States. Private lands are used by virtually all of the nation’s terrestrial and coastal birds, 251 of which are federally threatened, endangered or of conservation concern. Many privately owned working lands that produce food, timber and other resources for society also provide valuable habitat for birds.

highlights the necessity of collaborating with
farmerS, rancherS and other private landownerS to ensure their livelihood while conserving the waterfowl habitat that also
results in cleaner water for everyone.
“This year’s State of the Birds Report proves that our nation’s birds can be used as an indicator of our effectiveness as stewards of the land,” said Ducks Unlimited (DU)CEO Dale Hall. “Landowners can add a new way to measure the productiveness of their land with the number of canvasbacks, gadwalls and pintails they see.”
The scientific data in this year’s report indicate a very high dependence on private lands among grassland, wetland and eastern forest birds, as well as the tremendous potential for bird conservation. More than 100 species have at least half of their U.S. breeding distributions on private lands.

“More than 90% of the land in DU’s No.1 priority area, the Prairie Pothole Region, is privately owned,” said DU Chief Conservation Officer Paul Schmidt. “The State of the Birds Report highlights the necessity of collaborating with farmers, ranchers and other private landowners to ensure their livelihood while conserving the waterfowl habitat that also results in cleaner water for everyone.” The State of the Birds Report on Private Lands is a collaborative effort as part of the U.S. North American Bird Conservation Initiative, involving federal and state wildlife agencies, and scientific and conservation organizations. These include North American Bird Conservation Initiative, U.S. Committee, American Bird Conservancy, Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ducks Unlimited, Klamath Bird Observatory, National Audubon Society, National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, Inc., The Nature Conservancy, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, University of Idaho, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Forest Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and U.S. Geological Survey. Converting Your Assets to an IRA When You Retire Courtesy of Matthew E. O’Donnell Vice President Morgan Stanley
Rolling a 401(k), 403(b) or 457 plan account into an IRA could be worth consideration for many retirees. Making a switch may provide access to greater investment flexibility, portability and the value of professional management during retirement. If you’re about to retire – or have recently retired – you have an important question to answer regarding the money in your 403(b) or 457 plan account: Do you take a lump-sum distribution or roll it over? If your plan allows, rolling over your account into an IRA may prove beneficial for a number of reasons. • More investMent options. 403(b) and 457 plans generally offer limited investment options. With an IRA, you have access to a greater range of investments, including mutual funds, ETFs, stocks, bonds and cash. This allows you to develop a more precise mixture of investments that best reflect your own personal risk tolerance, investment philosophy and financial goals. • Lower fees. The fees associated with an IRA can be lower than the expenses in your 403(b) or 457 plan. Fees have a direct impact on your

How much can you withdraw each year? What about your pension? When should you take Social Security? How do you compensate for inflation? These are all questions you may ask yourself along the way.
• Greater fLexibiLity. Some plans allow only lump-sum distributions, and others may limit the frequency of withdrawals. If you roll the money into an IRA, you can take it out on your own schedule, provided you are at least age 59½.1
If you roll over your assets into an IRA, you can easily access the guidance of a financial professional to help you determine a strategy that’s suitable for you. A financial professional can also assist with your estate planning needs. For example, with 403(b) and 457 plans, heirs must take out all the assets after the account holder dies and face a potentially large tax bill. However, beneficiaries of IRAs may be able to stretch distributions out during their lifetimes.
• More convenience. If you have worked at different jobs during your career and you roll all your previous employers’ plan balances into an IRA, you’ll have a single, consolidated account to track. This makes it easier to monitor your investments, rebalance as appropriate and schedule required minimum distributions.
tax benefits There are a number of tax benefits to consider, as well. A lump-sum distribution could potentially cost you thousands, as the table below illustrates. In this example, a 65-year-old teacher who is retiring with a $350,000 balance in her 403(b) account would lose more than $4,200 a year if she opted for a lump-sum distribution rather than a rollover.2 If you roll over directly into a traditional IRA, you aren’t required to pay taxes until you begin withdrawing money from your account. Note that if you roll over the money from a traditional plan to a Roth IRA, you will have to pay income taxes on the full balance converted in the year you

make the conversion. Any withdrawals made after a conversion are tax free once you have attained age 59 ½ and it’s been at least five (5) years since the conversion date. If you have after-tax contributions in your employer plan, you may opt to withdraw them without penalty when you roll over your assets. However, if you wish to leave those funds in your retirement account in order to continue tax deferral, you can include them in your rollover. When you begin regular distributions from your IRA, a prorated portion will be deemed non-taxable to reimburse you for the after-tax contributions.

TechTrends In VItro FertIlIzatIon
D
a PowerFul tool
uring the past 50 years technological advances in the field of bovine reproduction have led to some dramatic changes in the way cattle look, reproduce, perform, and even taste. artificial Insemination (aI) and conventional embryo transfer (et) are two of the main tools used by progressive producers to accelerate genetic improvement within their herds. However, recently many producers have introduced In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) into their reproductive programs. early on, IVF struggled to establish itself as a legitimate technology because embryo production and pregnancy rates were low, which made the cost of a live calf unacceptable to most. at that point IVF was used as a last chance option for donor cows that could not produce pregnancies through other means – but now the technology has improved to such a level that it has become a very practical and competitive reproductive tool with numerous applications for seedstock and commercial operations alike.
How does IVF work? In Vitro Fertilization resembles conventional et by allowing cows to produce multiple calves per year. this is accomplished by generating embryos from elite cows called donors and transferring them into cows with less genetic merit called recipients. after this, there are many differences in the way the procedure works. In IVF, oocytes (unfertilized eggs) are collected using a specially designed probe, fitted with an ultrasound transducer which allows the ovary to be visualized during the aspiration procedure. the technician locates and stabilizes the ovary via rectal palpation of the reproductive tract. the aspiration probe is inserted vaginally where the transducer and ovary meet with only the vaginal wall separating the two. the probe has an attached needle guide that houses a 55cm long needle. this needle will transverse the vaginal membrane and is inserted into fluid filled follicles, containing oocytes, located on the ovary. the contents of the follicles are aspirated out and captured in a searchable filter. the filter is then taken into the lab where it is rinsed and searched using a microscope; the oocytes are then retrieved, counted, and graded. once the oocytes have been processed they are moved into dishes with special media designed to mature them. the dishes are placed in an incubator for 18 to 24 hours where the maturation process takes place. the following day, semen is added to the dishes containing the matured oocytes and fertilization takes place. the media and incubator are designed to mimic the cow’s uterine environment as pertains to temperature, pH,
280 September/October 2013 • theshowcircuit.com
etc. Following fertilization, the oocytes are left in the incubators for the next 7 days as a percentage of them develop into embryos. they can then be evaluated under a microscope and quality graded just as you would conventional et embryos. the grade one and two embryos are now ready to be loaded into transfer straws and implanted into recipient cows that were in standing heat 7-8 days prior to the transfer date or vitrified (freezing method currently used for IVF embryos) for transfer at a later date.
wHat are tHe potentIal applIcatIons? 1. Embryo production from pregnant donors — Because the cervix and uterus are not penetrated during the process of aspiration, oocytes can still be collected without disturbing the fetus. Donors can be safely aspirated from about 45-100 days of gestation. on rare occasions donors can be aspirated up to 6 months of gestation, as long as the ovaries are accessible to the technician. this application is a good alternative for operations wanting to get a jump on the next generation. In years past, breeders were forced to decide whether to risk future productivity of young donors by flushing them as virgins or just postponing embryo production until after their first calf. By getting the heifers pregnant first, they are already on their way to calving in a normal window with their counter parts. It also works well for those operations that want to keep donors on a 365-day calving interval, and can help reduce reproductive failures such as cysts in donors that remain open for long periods of time. 2. Production from donors that do not make embryos in ET — Various reasons can cause donors to be non-productive in et. Blockages, scaring, uterine infections, and un-passable cervices are some of the more common reproductive tract abnormalities that can be overcome through IVF. also, donors prone to overstimulation or those that produce a high percentage of unfertilized eggs, generally perform well in IVF. Donors that typically fail to stimulate and ovulate little to no ova will not necessarily benefit from IVF. 3. Adding value to semen — with IVF, less semen is needed than in a typical aI or et procedure because oocytes are contained in small dishes during the fertilization period. this allows for tremendous opportunities. Depending on quality, one straw of conventional semen can fertilize oocytes from as many as 15 donors. this allows breeders to maximize the effectiveness of rare or expensive semen. If sex selected pregnancies are desired the IVF system offers distinct advantages over conventional et. Quality sexed frozen semen tends to be more effective in IVF because less sperm cells are necessary. Generally 1-2 straws are sufficient per donor, depending on how many oocytes she has produced. Semen does not have to be sexed prior to freezing in order to get sexed pregnancies. Conventionally frozen semen can be sorted for the desired sex prior to fertilization in the IVF process – this is termed reverse sorting. It should be noted that not all bulls will work after reverse sorting. also, oocytes from high producing donors can be placed in separate dishes making it possible to use more than one sire and still be able to identify the matings of the resulting embryos. 4. Short interval between procedures — the IVF procedure can be repeated more often than conventional et. Donors are routinely placed on bi-weekly schedules. During a 90 day period a donor could be aspirated up to 6 times. within a given time frame, more total pregnancies can be created through an IVF program when compared to et.
5. Other applications — Because donors do not have to be cycling in order to perform the IVF procedure, embryos can be created from cows that have not yet returned to estrus post-partum and heifers that have not reached puberty. oocytes can also be recovered from the ovaries of slaughtered females or donors prior to a death event.
wHat are tHe dIsadVantages? no doubt, the best environment to develop bovine embryos is within the uterus of the cow. therefore, embryos developed in a lab are not quite as hearty as those from et. lower pregnancy rates are to be expected and the freezeability of the embryos is compromised. the industry has not developed a standard method to cryopreserve IVF embryos that will produce acceptable results and most companies will advocate fresh transfers only. However, trans ova Genetics has developed methods for freezing IVF embryos and has achieved favorable pregnancy rates. For more information about IVF freezing methods consult with a trans ova Genetics’ client service representative. Some instances of large offspring Syndrome (calves born abnormally large) can occasionally occur. these instances are very rare and generally correlate with matings where extreme birth weights are expected.
wHat sHould you expect For results? oocyte recovery should range from 12-30 oocytes per procedure and will vary by breed, age, health, nutritional status, and cow-to-cow variation. Most high-quality conventional semen has a development rate of approximately 30%. For example, if a cow has 20 oocytes you could expect around 6 transferable embryos. IVF embryos transferred fresh should yield on average a 50% pregnancy rate in well-managed recipients. You can expect a slight decrease in pregnancy rate from frozen IVF embryos compared to embryos transferred fresh. ten to 15% of IVF procedures will result in zero useable embryos. these results represent averages; individual results can be higher or lower than the average.
desIgnIng your own program? Some breeders are using IVF to maximize the impact of their very best cow. one donor currently in the clinic has been worked 10 times in approximately a 5-month period and has made 80 pregnancies. this also happens to be a donor that came in because she was no longer making embryos in et. another client wanted to rapidly increase his herd size. In a 2.5 month period he aspirated 10 heifers 5 times each and used the reverse sorting technology to produce females. He ended up with 103 female pregnancies. another set of clients wanted to maximize the use of a rare straw of semen. they aspirated 9 total cows and fertilized the oocytes with one straw of semen, resulting in 252 fresh and frozen embryos. these are not typical results but are used as testimony of how powerful a tool IVF can be in a reproductive program. Depending on the specific needs of your program, various approaches can be made to accomplish your goals. the main thing is to understand exactly how the technology can be used to benefit your operation. In-Vitro technology is not for everyone or every cow, but more and more cattlemen and women are realizing that IVF has the potential to do things never before possible through other reproductive technologies.
