Champions aren’t bred and born overnight. They’re nurtured and refined over decades. I appreciate what it takes to get there, and I’m patient enough to see it through no matter what. For the same reason, I trust Andis clippers and trimmers. After 90 years in the industry, they know what works, and what I expect when preparing to show a champion, like the AGC Super 2 Speed clipper and blocking blade, as well as the full complement of interchangeable blades. I know cattle, and Andis knows me.
It looks like magic,
but it’s actually the result of research and feed technology at work! MoorMan’s® ShowTec® Shazam™ (No. 82000AAA6A) provides dietary support with key nutrients known to influence hair growth and integrity.

LIVESTOCK SUPPLEMENT & CONDITIONER The easy supplement for show-stopping results. Blue ribbons aren’t easy to come by – but fortunately, premium nutrition can be simple. By feeding your animal just a few ounces of ShowBloom a day, you give them essential protein, vitamins and minerals. The all-natural brewer’s yeast formula is palatable and increases digestibility and feed efficiency to create a shiny coat, clear eyes and improved muscling and hoof quality. Those are results that you – and the judges – can appreciate.

Meat Science and Food SaFety SpecialiSt
Brad Morgan Zoetis | Stillwater, oK
What is your background? I was raised in southeastern Oklahoma on a small family farm. We had a few cows and also raised market hogs. We had a farrow to finish swine operation that we raised a few show pigs but mostly of them were fed out and we harvested them at our family-owned packing plant in Antlers, OK. My sisters and I were the general laborers at the farm and in charge of the sanitation program at the plant. Things have changed just a little bit. Would you describe for us What you really do. Until the past couple of years, I have taught meat science classes and conducted industry-oriented research at land grant universities. I have been fortunate to work with great people at Colorado State (Dr. Gary Smith) and Oklahoma State (Dr. Glen Dolezal) Universities. Three years ago, I decided that I was ready to do something different and I was fortunate to remain in Stillwater, OK but become the meat scientist at Zoetis (formerly Pfizer Animal Health). I oversee food safety and meat science research projects as well as still get to teach meat industry related issues to our sales force and customer base. Love my job and really like supporting our sales force.
pictured above with wife Missy and their two sons jordan and branson.
hoW did you get into this line of Work? By accident. I had conducted research for various companies and Zoetis was one of those. They had seen me at various meetings and industry events and I received a call asking if I might be interested in a meat science position within the company. After visiting with them in more detail as well as talking with my wife, I took the plunge into the industry world. I really have enjoyed it and have learned a great deal about myself as well. I think I could go back to the university environment and be a much more effective instructor and colleague. What do you like about your job? I can honestly say that I enjoy 90% of the things that come with my current position. As mentioned, I like helping our sales force in terms of explaining the specifics about our product line and services offered by Zoetis. Additionally, the opportunity for individual professional development at my current job is outstanding. Lastly, I work with people that are much smarter than I am and that is always a good thing. What are the toughest challenges for What you do? Travel! That is the 10% I don’t like. But, hey, that is part of the job when the U.S. is your territory. The only other thing that I can think of is entirely brought on by me. I need to learn how to say no. Must say that I am still working on that part of the job. do you need a college degree in your profession? Yes you do. Obviously in this position you need to graduate, but need industry experience as well. Just because I have several degrees, doesn’t mean that is the only requirement. The two go hand-in-hand.

Where should soMebody go to get started in your line of Work? I get this question a great deal. What I say is go get a college education, but do a couple of internships during those four years as well. Get your education but sprinkle in some real world experiences as well. This will help you find out if you like what you might be doing in the future as well as students can start with the networking of people which is still very important. What is a typical day on the job like for you? You never know and that’s what makes it fun. I’m in Columbus, OH today for a vet student food symposium that was hosted by Ohio State University. Next week I have customer visits as well will be in a beef processing facility as well. Never a dull moment. What Would Most surprise a student about your career? Hard question. I would say that my job is not much different that their typical days. Just like them trying to juggle school, work, FFA/4-H projects, sports, fun and stuff, My life and career is very similar to that. I juggle work, travel, family, fun, stuff and more work. Just because you graduate, doesn’t necessarily mean that things will get less hectic or exciting. anything you Wish soMeone Would have told you When you Were in school? No, they told me I just didn’t listen. So surround yourself with smart people and do what they take the time to encourage you to do.

BUSINESS MINDED
Keeping Financially Fit
By Morgan Stanley Wealth Management
T
here’s much more to getting and staying ahead financially than earning a good salary. This article offers tips and best practices on ways to help improve one’s financial well-being.
Achieving financial success is no simple matter. It takes hard work, perseverance and adherence to strategies of saving, investing and managing your finances. Just as there are good habits associated with staying physically fit, there are also best practices involved with keeping financially fit. Simple strategies such as using debt wisely, taking advantage of tax-advantaged investment vehicles, and monitoring spending habits all go a long way toward helping you achieve your personal, business and financial goals. Consider the “financially fit” best practices below. If you are not already doing them, consider how they could improve your financial picture.

Reduce and manage debt. • Consider how much you spend on debt service for mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, and student or other loans. lenders typically look at two metrics when deciding whether or not to extend credit: the front-end and back-end ratios. The front-end ratio shows what percentage of your income goes toward housing expenses, including mortgage payments, real estate taxes,

“
Credit Card debt is one of the most expensive debts you Can Carry.
homeowner’s insurance and association dues. The back-end ratio shows what portion of your income is needed to cover all of your monthly debt obligations, including housing, credit card bills, car loans, student loans and other debt service. Most lenders look for
a front-end ratio of no more than 28% and a back-end ratio of 36% or less.1 • Develop a plan for eliminating credit card debt. Credit card debt is one of the most expensive debts you can carry. Interest rates often top 18% on existing balances. Paying off just $100 more per month on a $5,000 balance could pay off the entire balance in 32 months instead of 94 months, saving almost $3,000 in interest (assuming an interest rate of 18% and a 2% minimum monthly payment).2 • Check your credit report. Credit reports offer a snapshot of how the world views your “creditability.” Credit scores range between 300 points and 850 points, and most fall between 600 and 750. A score above 700 usually suggests good credit management.3 You can request a free copy of your credit report once each year from each of three major credit reporting agencies--Equifax, Experian and TransUnion--at AnnualCreditReport.com.
Manage your income and expenses. • Set a budget and track monthly spending. This is one of the most effective ways to control your costs. The simple act of recording expenses forces you to think about them and to see exactly how much you are spending on a given item on a monthly or annual basis. A $5 latte at the local coffee shop may seem insignificant on its own, but if you buy one five days a week, that adds up to over $100 per month and $1,200 per year.
• Pay bills on time using online recurring services. Online bill payment saves time and postage, and lets you avoid late fees by automating payments for many services. Timely bill payment also factors in your credit score. according to FICO, credit history accounts for about 35% of your credit score.4 • Cancel recurring expenses you don’t use. Many services today are purchased on a subscription basis, with monthly charges

and automated annual renewals. That includes club memberships, gyms, newspapers, magazines or online publications, not to mention cable TV and phone service. Taken individually, none of these expenses may amount to a lot, but when looked
at collectively over the course of a year, they can be surprisingly high. Consider how often you use these services or if they can be renegotiated with the provider by reducing elective options.
Save more by taking advantage of tax-deferred accounts • Contribute the maximum to your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. Your company retirement savings plan offers one of the best ways to save for retirement. Contributions to traditional plans are tax deductible, and earnings are tax-deferred. And in many plans, employers will match a portion of your contributions. In a 401(k) plan, employees can contribute up to $17,500 in 2013. Individuals aged 50 or older can contribute an additional $5,500. 5 • Contribute to an IRA. Contributions to a traditional IRA may be deductible, so they may reduce your taxable income. Contributions to a Roth IRA are after tax, but distributions are tax free when you retire. Whether or not you can contribute to a Roth is based on your Adjusted Gross Income. Traditional and Roth IRA contribution limits for the 2013 tax year--which may be made up until April 15, 2014--are $5,500 per individual and $6,500 for
those aged 50 or older. 6 Note that deductibility of traditional IRA contributions phases out above certain income levels, depending upon your filing status and if you or your spouse are covered by an employer-sponsored retirement plan. • Look into a Health Savings Account (HSA). If you have a highdeductible health plan, you may be able to contribute to a HSA. These accounts let you set aside pre-tax money to pay for health care costs not covered under your plan. The maximum contribution to an HSA for 2013 is $3,250 if you have single coverage, or $6,450 if you have family coverage. No income limits apply to HSAs, and funds do not have to be used in a given year. HSAs are offered through banks or other financial services companies, and may be available as part of your employer benefits package. For more information, see IRS publication 969 Health Savings Accounts and Other Tax-Favored Health Plans.7
Plan for the future. • Set aside money for emergencies and retirement. Whether through contributions to an employer plan or automated payroll deductions to a savings or investment account, making regular, systematic contributions is the easiest and most effective way to save over time. And when it comes to saving, time is your ally because of the power of compounding; so the earlier you start, the more you’ll save.
“
and when it Comes to saving, time is your ally beCause of the power of Compounding; so the earlier you start, the more you’ll save.
“
• Create a will. Especially if you have children, a will serves not only to specify executors and beneficiaries of your estate, but also to designate guardians for minors. If you die without a will and have minor children, the probate court will appoint a guardian for them, and there is no guarantee that the court’s appointment of a guardian will coincide with your own wishes. • Review your beneficiaries annually. This includes your will, insurance policies and retirement accounts. Keep in mind that an account with a designated beneficiary is not included in your estate for distribution purposes. It is distributed to the designated beneficiary. So you will want to make sure your account beneficiaries are coordinated with named heirs in your will.

Professor to Producer
CDS Feedstuff of
ondensed distillers solubles (CDS), back in the 1960s and the 1970s, was referred to as corn stillage. Sometime CDS is called syrup. Whatever name it is referred to as, CDS is receiving new interest as a primary feedstuff for beef cattle diets. Is it the feedstuff of the future? Probably not. I think shelled corn will always be the finishing feedstuff of choice, but then CDS is a processed form of shelled corn.
CDS is the liquid fraction collected after distilling ethanol. Condensed distillers solubles are either sold as a liquid or the CDS are added to distillers grains to create distillers grains with solubles. When dried, distillers grains with solubles are referred to as DDGS. Historically, CDS contained around 60% to 70% moisture, 10% crude protein (CP) and 12% crude fat (CF). Today about 50% of the ethanol plants are spinning the CDS in centrifuges to remove a portion of the corn oil that is then sold for biodiesel production. Today’s reducedfat CDS contains around 60% moisture, 14% CP, 5.5% CF, high sulfur (S) content (0.5 to 0.8%) low calcium (0.02 to 0.05%), high phosphorous (P) (0.4 to 0.7%) and low fiber content (less than 5% NDF and ADF). the Future for
Beef Cattle?
“
C
By Dr. Paul Walker - Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting
In the past, CDS has been limited in beef cattle finishing diets to 20% of the diet dry matter (DM) or less. The last two beef cattle nutrition studies we conducted before I retired used CDS as a primary feed ingredient for beef cows and finishing steers. In this article, I will relate the results of the finishing study.
“
CDS is the liquid fraction
collected after distilling ethanol.
In this study, we fed four diets that were shelled corn based and contained 15% of the diet DM as ground switchgrass. Mature switchgrass has a nutrient content similar to wheat straw. The four diets were a shelled corn-soybean meal control, 20% reduced-fat CDS, 40% reduced-fat CDS or 40% reduced-fat modified wet distillers grains with solubles. The results were similar average daily gains regardless of
dietary treatment, reduced dry matter intake for the 40% CDS fed steers and higher gain to feed ratio (improved feed efficiency) for the steers consuming 40% CDS. No differences in carcass characteristics were observed regardless of diet consumed; the steers average Yield Grade was 3.3 and their Quality Grade was average choice. Our conclusion was that high dietary inclusion rates of reduced-fat CDS can result in similar to improved performance compared to shelled corn and distillers grains (DGS) diets. Therefore, economics should determine whether or not finishing diets include CDS. Generally, DGS byproducts have been more economical to feed than shelled corn and they still are. However, during the early fall of 2013, as shelled corn prices were falling, DGS byproducts were decreasing at a slower rate. Consequently for a period of time in the eastern corn belt (Illinois, Indiana) byproducts were not competitively priced. When we conducted this study, corn was $7.00/bu, modified wet DGS was $125/ton, DDGS was $225/ ton and CDS was $50/ton, as locally priced in central Illinois. As I write this article, shelled corn (Chicago) is priced at $4.25/bu or 8.9¢/lb. DM, modified wet DGS (Gibson City, IL) is $60/ton (5.8¢/lb. DM) and CDS is $25/ton (3.1¢/lb. DM) and DDGS is $225/ton (12.5¢/lb. DM). As I have written in previous articles, DDGS is seldom cost effective in finishing cattle diets. However, modified wet DGS and CDS almost always are cost effective.

In the Illinois State University study, the 40% CDS and DGS diets saved 47.6 and 22.9% in feed cost, respectively, while the 20% CDS diet saved 27.6% in feed cost for the 106 day feeding period. There are concerns that should be considered when feeding CDS. One concern is the high total mineral content of CDS – especially the high P and high S contents. The high S content of CDS, at high inclusion rate (greater than 20% of the diet DM) can predispose cattle to PEM and sulfur toxicity. In this study that fed 240 steers, no sulfur toxicity symptoms were observed. The high P content of CDS implies higher limestone (calcium - Ca) inclusion rates to balance the Ca/P ratio between 1.2/1 and 2/1. The high total mineral concentration and high P in CDS diets can predispose steers to urinary calculi and phospatic stones. Urinary calculi will usually occur during the last part of the finishing period and almost always results in death of the cattle or in the carcass being condemned because of urine contamination. Therefore, when CDS is included as a primary feedstuff, ammonium chloride also should be added at the rate of 0.50% of the diet DM. Ammonium chloride should help neutralize the urine and prevent phosphatic stones from forming and blocking/rupturing the urethra. Urinary calculi is really only a concern in steers. Due to anatomical differences, heifers do not get urinary calculi. Another concern when feeding CDS is how to correctly mix the CDS into a total mixed ration (TMR). The normal recommendation for adding a liquid to a TMR is to add the liquid as the last ingredient. This principal works if CDS is included as 40% of the diet DM. When CDS is included as 40% of the diet DM the total ration has sufficient moisture content to evenly mix and uniformly incorporate all of the dietary ingredients. However, if the CDS represents less than 40% of the diet DM (as in the 20.0% CDS diet) then adding the CDS as the last ingredient causes the dry forage to ball and prevents uniform mixing. A non-uniform TMR causes some cattle to over eat CDS and consume insufficient ammonium chloride resulting in urinary calculi. To help ensure uniform mixing when a dry forage is used, consider adding and mixing all the dietary ingredients except the CDS and dry forage, then mix in one half of the CDS before the dry forage is added and add the last one half of the CDS following incorporation of the hay or straw. Incorporating CDS into corn silage-based diets is much easier and urinary calculi is usually not a problem. Including CDS into cattle finishing diets is both an art and a science. Currently, CDS is the most economical highenergy feedstuff available that managers can add to finishing diets. Good luck!

any breeders have elite females from which they can market valuable genetics and offspring. With the use of advanced reproductive technologies, more off-
spring can be propagated to help multiply the success of breeding and marketing programs. While many breeders are familiar with embryo transfer (ET), an increasing number of breeders are implementing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) into their reproductive programs.
Embryo Transfer Conventional (in vivo) ET involves specific hormonal treatment (with follicle stimulating hormone) of donor cows and heifers to cause multiple follicles to ovulate. The donors are bred using artificial insemination (AI) following super ovulation after estrus (standing heat). Approximately seven days after insemination, embryos are non-surgically collected or “flushed” from the donor’s uterus and transferred fresh into synchronous recipients who will serve as surrogate mothers, or frozen to be implanted at a later date. Embryo transfer is one option that can increase a cow’s reproductive efficiency, allowing her to have numerous calves per year. While the average cow produces six to seven calves in her lifetime, ET can increase her reproductive efficiency to numerous calves per year – allowing breeders to multiply the success of their superior pedigrees. Embryo transfer is a very accessible technology and produces the option to have embryos transferred fresh into synchronized recipients, or to have the embryos safely frozen to be transferred at a later date. By creating more offspring that are valuable to a herd, breeders can advance their marketing opportunities, improve the reproductive performance, and enhance the rate of genetic gain. In Vitro Fertilization An IVF collection, called an Aspiration or Ovum Pick Up (OPU), is the process of harvesting unfertilized oocytes, (unfertile eggs) directly from the ovaries of a donor cow or heifer. Recovered oocytes are fertilized one day after aspiration, and transferred seven days after fertilization. During this eight-day time period, they are cultured and grown in an incubator with controlled media, temperature and environment to mirror the cow’s uterus. They are then transferred into recipient cows seven days after the recipient’s standing heat or estrus, which is similar to the transfer process for embryos produced by embryo transfer. Breeders who choose to use IVF technology have the opportunity to obtain more offspring from valuable females in their herd, similar to the benefit of embryo transfer. Many breeders do not realize however, the additional benefits when using IVF. IVF is a technology that allows breeders to collect offspring from open cows, preg-

nant cows, virgin heifers, as well as problematic females that have had difficulty in conventional breeding attempts. It is also possible to retrieve oocytes (unfertilized eggs) from donors shortly after a death event to produce one final genetic collection. The applications of this technology allow breeders who would like to get a jump on the next generation to do so without altering other vital aspects of their breeding program. Historically, breeders were forced to decide whether to risk future productivity of young donors by flushing them as virgin heifers or just postponing embryo production until after their first calf. Using IVF technology to create pregnancies from a donor gestating her natural calf allows breeders to generate offspring from elite heifers and keeps them on an annual production cycle to calve on schedule with the rest of the herd. When compared to embryo transfer, IVF may further maximize the potential of an elite female in a shorter time period, as the interval between IVF aspirations is shorter than the interval between traditional embryo transfer sessions. It is possible to obtain IVF cycles every week or every other week, whereas most embryo transfer programs will collect donors every 60 days. While conventional embryo transfer generally requires the use of two to three units of semen per donor, IVF can be used to maximize the value of rare, sexed, or expensive semen. One unit of semen can be applied to oocytes from multiple donors, or semen from several different bulls may be used to fertilize a group of oocytes collected from an elite female. There is a perception in the industry that IVF is a more costly option. However, it actually becomes more cost effective than traditional embryo transfer on donors that produce limited numbers of embryos. This fact – coupled with the opportunity to increase the number of calves, the sex ratio of the calves and the ability to increase the opportunities for collection, makes IVF a leading choice for the progressive producer looking to increase the number of offspring that create the most value in their program. What’s the best option for me? Embryo transfer is likely the best choice for prolific embryo producing donors that can meet the owner’s embryo production needs. In this scenario,

embryo cost is economical and in vivo embryos hold a slight pregnancy rate advantage for both fresh and frozen embryos when compared to IVF. In many instances, IVF provides more value. It is more cost effective to use IVF on low embryo production donors or females you would like to keep in the production cycle. Additionally, IVF can reduce donor boarding costs and semen costs by utilizing a single straw of semen to fertilize multiple embryos, with the opportunity to use more than one sire on a single donor aspiration. IVF is also a more economical choice if offspring of one gender are strongly desired from bulls that do not have frozen sexed semen available. Even if the initial cost of the procedure is higher, the actual cost per embryo will often be lower. Conclusion Depending on the specific needs of a breeder’s program, various approaches can be taken. It is important for producers to understand how each and every reproductive technology can be used to benefit your operation. While IVF may not be the answer for every donor program, many have realized it is a tool that offers unique opportunities to extend elite genetics provided by both proven donors and rare or expensive sires. To effectively and economically integrate IVF technology into a breeding program, breeders are encouraged to carefully review their goals, understand the opportunities and limitations of both options, and work with the experienced, professional teams to determine the best advanced reproductive technology programs to meet their goals.

Well the year has once again kicked off and with record attendance at the first shows of the season. I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and happy New Year! There were a few shows over Christmas break for juniors in SD; and I can’t think of a better way to get in some great family bonding! I would like to remind members to make sure they get their livestock registered with the purebred breed association they are affiliated with. Most point shows request registration papers at check in time. This is a busy time of year for breed registration offices so allow 3-4 weeks for your papers to arrive. This will hopefully save you late fees if you plan accordingly. We have some great shows coming up such as : Sioux Empire Farm Show, the Jackrabbit Classic, and AGR Presiden-tial Preview. for Conservation Easement Donations
T
he Mule Deer Foundation, in early December, joined 29 sportsmen-conservation organizations to urge Congress to support tax incentives for private landowners who donate conservation easements on their property. The groups sent a letter to members of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus urging them to co-sponsor bills in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate that would make these conservation tax incentives permanent.
“Giving private landowners a tax incentive for placing their property under a conservation easement is a win-win for landowners and wildlife, and it is essential that Congress act to make these deductions permanent,” commented Mule Deer Foundation President, Miles Moretti. “Conservation easements help keep working lands in the hands of farmers, ranchers, and private forest owners. It also provides key habitat benefits for wildlife, including mule deer.” Enhanced conservation tax deductions have been in place since 2006 were a large factor in increasing the pace of donated conservation easements by a third to more than a million acres each year. Landowners who make a conservation donation can deduct the fair market value of their donation, up to 50% of their adjusted gross income, in the year of the donation and over a subsequent 15-year period. But the authorization for the program expires at the end of this year. Legislation in the Senate (the Rural Heritage Conservation Extension Act, S. 526) and the House (the Conservation Easement Incentive Act, H.R. 2807) would make the incentive permanent and sportsmen’s groups are urging members of Congress to sign on in support. “Mule deer thrive in areas where there is large, unfragmented habitat and private ranch lands provide a significant portion of this habitat throughout their range,” Moretti continued. “Enhanced conservation tax provisions are cost-effective and help ‘land rich, cash poor’ ranching families to stay on the land. I hope that western lawmakers recognize this valuable program and join in support of these bills being considered by Congress.” – The Mule Deer Foundation

W
hen Jared Paul Wilson was growing up near Aledo, Texas, just west of Fort Worth, he was fascinated by the cattle in the pasture next to his house and spent as much time as possible exploring the outdoors. Then he went inside to draw pictures of what he found. Today, that little boy has grown into a respected artist specializing in pencil drawings of the wildlife, western culture and landscape of Texas. His artwork is described as realistic and authentic. “I try to explain what I see,” Wilson says. “I am at peace in the outdoors with wildlife. My work is not to recreate that but to interpret what I experienced.” While he says there isn’t a medium

that he hasn’t explored, he prefers pencil, specifically Prismacolor Premier Soft Color pencils, which give his art a photorealistic feel. His art teacher at Mansfield High School introduced him to this medium and he ran with it. Wilson has led an extraordinary life, having battled cancer twice and being homeless for a while after college. It was during this hard time that he wrote a children’s book – “Shoe Fly, Don’t Bother Me.” Today his artwork has won many awards and is found in private collections and exhibits all over the world. Last summer, Wilson traveled to Parker Ranch on the Big Island of Hawaii and roamed over 130,000 acres of the most beautiful and unique ranchland found on the globe. “I’m always looking for new ranches to go out and document,” he explains. “State
parks are also great places to go to see many different things. Particularly in Texas, the terrain and the animals start to change very quickly as you explore. “ Wilson also is available for commission pieces if you’re interested in documenting special animals, places, etc. He offers seminars as well if you want to learn about technique and create your own masterpieces. To any budding artists reading this, he offers this advice: “A lot of people say to me, ‘You are living the dream, doing what you love.’ That is true, but realistically dreams come with a price. It’s a lot of hard work and practice. You don’t just wake up as a child and draw like this. Pursue your interest in drawing, but challenge yourself to get better and better.”

FirsT sTaTewide elk HunT in OklaHOma?
T
he Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) recently proposed a statewide elk hunt for 2014. According to the Oklahoman, the proposal, if approved, would allow hunters to harvest one bull or cow elk to aid in controlling the increasing population.
Currently, elk hunting is closed on all DWC-owned and -managed lands. Only a small number of sportsmen are fortunate enough to be able to hunt on private land or participate in a controlled hunt. One of the best hunting grounds for elk in the state remains the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. In 1966, the refuge opened up to elk hunters through a partnership between the DWC and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a way to curb the local populations. Since then, elk have been spotted in at least 33 of Oklahoma’s counties and farmers are reporting problems from the burgeoning herds. “And almost everywhere they are, they are causing issues, primarily agricultural depredation issues,” said DWC wildlife division chief Alan Peoples. An absence of natural predators means that the elk have free range over much of Oklahoma. Experts say that the herds found in the state now are primarily refugees from wildlife refuges such as Wichita Mountains, Pushmataha, Cookson Hills, Spavinaw, and Cherokee. According to the DWC, unmanaged elk may overpopulate their existing range and cause habitat damage if left unchecked. The proposal must be approved by the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission before the DWC can move forward. Regulations in wildlife refugees such as Wichita Mountains will not be affected. – OutdoorHub

ccording to a conservative website (Top Right news), “Daniel Defense, one of the nation’s leading manufacturers and retailers in the firearms industry, was willing to pay top dollar for a commercial in the 2014 nFL Super Bowl. But the commercial — emphasizing personal responsibility, family security, and fundamental rights – was rejected “due to the rules the nFL has set into place for [Daniel Defense’s] category.” “This despite the fact that Daniel’s Defense does not actually violate those ‘rules.’ Top Right news looked in the nFL rulebook and we quote: ‘The nFL’s Advertising Policy addresses several Prohibited Advertising Categories, including guidelines for ads featuring alcohol, video games, movies, prescription drugs, and, of course, firearms. ‘The firearms portion of the nFL’s Prohibited Advertising Categories states: ‘5. Firearms, ammunition or other weapons are prohibited; however, stores that sell firearms and ammunitions (e.g., outdoor stores and camping stores) will be permitted, provided they sell other products and the ads do not mention firearms, ammunition or other weapons.’ “According to these guidelines, Daniel Defense’s Super Bowl commercial does not violate nFL policy for two reasons: 1) Daniel Defense has a brick-and-mortar store, where they sell products other than firearms such as apparel; and 2) The commercial itself does not mention firearms, ammunition or weaponry. “So the 62-second ad features no firearms, and Daniel Defense was even willing to swap out the company’s rifle logo at the end of the ad with an American flag — but the nFL rejected them a second time.” The ad itself shows a working dad, who was apparently in the military at one time, coming home to his loving wife and a new baby. The voiceover describes how the dad feels about his responsibility to protect his family and how he believes nobody has the right to tell him how he can or can’t do that.” Very simple, but apparently not politically correct enough to air during the Super Bowl alongside the usual risqué ads and musical acts. Check out Daniel Defense Super Bowl Ad on You Tube to judge for yourself.

This is the third consecutive year that Texas Tech has won the title, making it only the second university in the history of intercollegiate meat judging to accomplish the feat. The team won the lamb judging, pork judging, specifications and reasons divisions. The students finished second in placings and beef grading.

“
“
“We are very proud of the efforts of these young men and women and their representation of our university on a national stage,” said M. Duane Nellis, president of Texas Tech. “The meat judging program has a successful and storied history and continues to be the benchmark nationally for other programs. A tremendous amount of praise and gratitude goes to Coaches Mark Miller and Loni Woolley and to the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources for its dedication and commitment to our students.”
We are of the efforts of these young men and women and their representation of our university on a national stage.
The team won the contest by a 51-point margin. The remaining top five teams in the contest included Angelo State University, Kansas State University, Texas A&M University and Oklahoma State University.
Individual placements included: Christy Woerner, high individual; Austin Langemeier, fourth; Nick Hardcastle, fifth; and Kassandra Ognoskie, eleventh. Woerner and Langemeier were both named First Team All-American Team members. The members of the All-American Teams are selected based upon scholastic achievement and competition performance. Ognoskie was named Second Team All-American. The prestigious Rachel Hamilton Spirit Award, an award given in recognition of the commitment, dedication and teamwork displayed during a team member’s meat judging career was given to Childers. “This is a very special group of students who have worked hard this year,” said Mark Miller, professor and San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo Distinguished Chair in Meat Science. “They courageously came back from a loss at the Eastern National and the American Royal contests and committed themselves to working hard as a team to win decisively at the International.” The team was coached by Woolley, who is a graduate student, along with Miller. Texas Tech now boasts a total of 11 national championships in intercollegiate meat judging (1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013). Because the university has won it three times again, the trophy will be retired at Texas Tech. This is the third cup to be retired on the campus.

Crowned national hereford Queen
B
rooke Jensen, Courtland, Kan., was crowned the 2013-14 National Hereford Queen during the 2013 American Royal National Hereford Show in Kansas City. Born into the Hereford breed, Brooke has her work cut out for her as she begins her year long journey as an agriculture advocate, the face of the Hereford breed and a role model for countless young Hereford women.
“As a young girl, I always looked up to the National Hereford Queen. They were an inspiration of the kind of person I should grow up to be: a poised leader, intelligent and kind,” Brooke says. “I want to be a role model and make an impact on the youth like the past queens did for me.” As longtime members of the Hereford industry themselves, Kevin and Sheila Jensen have raised their daughter and two sons, Brady and Ben, since birth in an environment full of a passion for Hereford cattle. Brooke competed against six other young women from across the U.S. for the title. The National Hereford Queen program is managed by the National Hereford Women. Queen candidates are evaluated on their involvement with and knowledge of the Hereford breed, behavior, attitude, appearance and interaction with producers, as well as their résumés and interviews. Judges look for a responsible, well-rounded young lady who is willing to spend an entire year traveling all over the country to represent the Hereford breed to her best ability. First runner-up honors went to Amy Green, Munfordville, Ky.; Katie Burns, Coulterville, Ill., was named second runner-up and Miss Congeniality.
“
“
Brooke began showing cattle at a young age and exhibited her first animal at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Indianapolis, Ind., in 2003, when she was 7 years old. Since then, Brooke has accomplished numerous achievements both in the ring and through other National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) activities such as the Hereford Bowl and contests including extemporaneous speaking, team fitting, team marketing and photography. With her poise and determination, she is a fierce competitor in the national showmanship contest each year. Through the years, she has been named champion peewee, reserve junior and reserve intermediate showman. In the Kansas Junior Hereford Association (KJHA) she has served as a director for two years and as the 2013 Kansas Hereford always looked up to the Queen.
as a young girl, i national hereford Queen. They were an inspiration of the kind of person i should grow up to be.
“Herefords are a huge part of my life,” Brooke says. “It’s an incredible experience being actively involved in an industry with the most amazing, hardworking people in the world.” After graduating from high school in May 2014, Brooke plans to attend Kansas State University to pursue a dual major in agricultural business and food science. Ultimately, Brooke would like to be employed in a field related to food science where she hopes to promote the beef industry. Even in the future, Brooke plans to stay true to her Hereford roots by continuing to build her herd of purebred Hereford cattle and remaining active in the showring. “The Hereford industry is huge right now, and I am so happy to be a part of it,” Brooke says. “‘Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ is the only way to describe what this means to me. I’m honored to represent the breed that built me.”

Drought Lingering Through Early 2014
D
rought likely won’t go away during the early months of 2014, according to the latest “Drought Monitor” report released on December 19, 2013. The map, put together by the National Drought Mitigation Center, shows about one-third of the country was in moderate or worse drought as of Dec. 17. Western states, in particular, will see conditions of severe to extreme to exceptional drought as well as pockets up through the Plains from the Texas Panhandle to Nebraska.
The U.S. Seasonal Drought Outlook – valid from December 19, 2013 thru March 31m, 2014, also indicates persistent and/or intensifying drought in these areas as well. “Scattered areas of drought from eastern Texas northeastward through eastern Missouri and central Illinois are expected to improve or be removed from the Drought Monitor by the end of March 2014,” according to the report. “Heavy precipitation (was) anticipated in association with a strong storm system between Dec. 19th and Christmas Day across this region, with amounts of 1.5 to 3.0 inches or a little more. Forecasts either lean toward dryness or favor neither precipitation extreme thereafter, but in addition to the effects of this storm system, this region of expected improvement climatologically experiences moisture recharge more often than do areas farther to the north and west, where the first three months of the year are drier than most other seasons. Bottom line – the short-term storm system and climatological considerations point toward drought improvement (in this region), though confidence is low. “Farther north and west – across the rest of the Plains and the upper Midwest – the first three months of the year are drier than most other seasons. Climatologically, the moisture budget dries out more frequently than it recharges, except in areas where snowpack or frozen soils exist for much of the period. Most of the Plains and upper Midwest are expected Bottom line – the short-term to miss the brunt of the storm system and climatologimoisture associated with cal considerations point toward the pre-Christmas storm drought improvement (in this resystem, though areas of gion), though confidence is low. northern Texas and adjacent New Mexico and Oklahoma could receive over an inch. Following the storm, there are enhanced chances or below-normal precipitation to the north of central Texas and eastern New Mexico during the last week of the year, and the odds favor a drier than normal January for most of Texas and the southern tier or Oklahoma. For January – March as a whole, neither precipitation extreme is favored,

unlike areas farther to the east and to the west. Taking all this into consideration, drought persistence is anticipated but no expansion is forecast at this time, save for the westernmost fringe of the Big Bend region of Texas. “From the Rockies westward, climatologically, January – March varies from a slightly dry time of year in the eastern and southern Rockies (where 10% to 20% of annual precipitation usually falls) to a very wet time of year in California (more than 45% of annual precipitation on average). Areawide, it is an important season for snowpack to accumulate and provide a ready source of water for the ensuing warm and (in western sections) dry time of year. Thus January – March precipitation is of particular importance to this entire region. “From central and southern sections of the Rockies westward through most of the Intermountain West and the West Coast, light to moderate precipitation is forecast for the first 7 days of the period, followed by enhanced chances for below-normal precipitation during the ensuing week. For January, below-normal precipitation is favored from central and southern California southeastward into northeastern Arizona while surplus precipitation is more likely from central Idaho to the north and east, with neither extreme favored elsewhere. As a whole, the outlook for the first three months of the year has enhanced chances for deficient precipitation from New Mexico and western Colorado westward through the southern half of Nevada and the central and southern sections of California.” – National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center

attle markets are heading into the final holiday period of 2013 at record or near-record price levels across the board. Cattle slaughter and beef production are falling as the market transitions into a much tighter supply situation in 2014. Cattle and beef prices are expected to push to even higher record levels in 2014. Tight feeder cattle supply will be the major market driver in the coming year with the smallest calf crop since the 1940s squeezed ever tighter with fewer feeder cattle imports and the prospect of increased heifer retention. This cattle and beef market forecast depends on continued moderation of drought conditions. While overall drought conditions in the country are the best since 2010, there remain widespread areas of marginal to exceptional drought that could quickly regress into more severe drought. It is important to monitor conditions through the winter and especially into the spring to determine market expectations and management plans for the year. For most producers, 2014 plans should begin with a forage production and management plan. In many cases, forages are in a state of reduced productivity due to drought conditions and must be managed for recovery. This will determine the overall carrying capacity of the ranch as well as the needed rest and recovery periods for forage. Obviously, the potential for continued or redeveloping drought must also be considered, especially early in the year.
The forage management plan will dictate the level and type of cattle production that is possible. Many producers have reduced cow numbers in recent years and need to develop a herd rebuilding plan. There are indications that herd rebuilding has begun in late 2013 with increased heifer retention implied by lower heifer inventories in feedlots and very strong heifer market prices combined with sharply reduced beef cow slaughter in the second half of the year. Individually, producers need to determine how much and how fast herd recovery is prudent given forage conditions, drought potential, financial considerations and other management factors. Cow-calf producers should not overlook the potential for stocker/ backgrounding programs using retained raised calves and/or purchased stockers to compliment cow-calf production in terms of optimal forage use seasonally while facilitating forage recovery. Stockers can provide income potential or heifer development opportunities for herd growth while minimizing the year-round forage demands of cows. While profit/return potential is high in 2014, given expectations for record cattle prices, producers can do the most to capitalize on these market opportunities by managing cost of production. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be the cost of replacement females. Many producers (and lenders) are concerned about the financial feasibility of replacement heifer and cow costs. One of the factors that determines what a heifer or cow is worth is the annual cost of production which directly affects net returns. Now is the time for producers to assess production and management practices to see if there are potential adjustments to implement in 2014. Feed costs are the largest component of annual cow costs with harvested forage and supplemental feed making up the largest part of feed costs. In many instances, better grazing management is the easiest and most feasible way to reduce harvested forage and supplemental feed needs by increasing the production, quality and timing of forage for grazing. – Cow/Calf Corner

Gray Show Cattle & Umbarger Show Feeds are excited to join forces and bring you a monthly article, in hopes to help juniors across the country. We hope the variety of topics brought to you in each issue are found to be beneficial and that juniors can find ways to incorporate them in to their very own programs.
FEEDING RATIONS ARE IMPORTANT
We discussed the health of your cattle in the last two issues; however it is necessary to focus on the health of your cattle through the winter as it is a vital part of a successful summer. You need to watch for the first indicators of sickness during these challenging winter months. These signs include a runny nose, drooping ears, glassy eyes, and a lack of appetite. The sooner you pick up on these signs, the sooner you can treat them and get your calf back on track. It’s important to make sure you check for the little things every morning and night. The winter is also the time to start transitioning your steers to a finisher ration. A finisher ration usually has more energy than a grower ration and is designed to grow and fatten cattle. We offer 3 finisher rations, Cattle Blaster, Barley Base, and Impact, to help meet the needs of different kinds of cattle. I would work with your local feed dealer to see which ration might be best for your steer. Generally speaking, heifers will stay on a grower ration through this time frame and into early spring. Use caution when switching heifers to a finisher ration as they have a tendency to get too fat. While we need heifers in good condition to show successfully, getting one too fat can create problems down the road. Thanks for reading and remember, we are always available to answer questions and offer advice.
KEEP YOUR CATTLE HEALTHY & ON A GOOD FEED RATION, YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL
