Unbelievable Daughters > at Bush, SD

Unbelievable is an incredibly designed calving ease prospect that owns unique neck extension, unquestioned structural soundness, extra special belly depth, and super muscle shape for an Angus bull. Unbelievable is sired by the wildly popular Bismarck bull, yet offers extra depth and hair, no doubt due to his maternally stacked pedigree which consists of a double shot of legendary Flashback laced with VRD and TC Dividend. We envision Unbelievable siring extra-ordinary low birth-weight progeny utilizable in both purebred and hybrid cow herds. We can’t wait for Unbelievable progeny!

PROFESSORTOPRODUCER [ PART ONE ]

ToTal ConfinemenT for Beef Cows: is it economical? Paul Walker, Professor emeritus Di Walker Consulting

A

s a result of reading my recent articles regarding the economics of starting a feedlot operation and a commercial cow-calf enterprise, several readers have requested information pertaining to the economics of a total confinement cow-calf operation. During my 33-year tenure at Illinois State University, we maintained a commercial cow-calf herd in total confinement, in open front cattle barns with concrete pens and fence line bunks. During my first 20 years, the herd consisted of about 60 mother cows. During the last 10 years, the cowherd contained about 128 mother cows. As a result of that experience, I will first share some of our learning experiences about what can be done and what should not be done.

During that 33-year period, the cowherd calved each year in a 60-day time span during February and March. The cows were synchronized each April with a timed insemination occurring on April 29 unless the 29th fell on a Sunday. Replacement heifers, retained from each year’s calf crop, were synchronized and inseminated one day before the cows. Immediately following AI, the cows and replacement heifers were allowed access to earth paddocks in addition to their concrete pens, and clean-up bulls were turned in for a 60-day natural breeding period. Calves were weaned in early September around Labor Day. The cows/replacement heifers were checked for pregnancy and all open cows were culled from the herd.

WhAt We leArned:

One – Cows can be housed year-round in confinement on concrete without pasture, without compromising production. However, degree of management expertise does go up and cow culling rate (as a percent of total cows) increases- in large part due to feet and leg soundness problems. We recognized early on that little genetic selection can occur from the cow side if a rigid 60-day breeding period is followed. After culling open cows, cows that failed to wean a calf, and problem cows (bad udders, hoof and leg unsoundness, etc.) there were not enough replacement heifers and still have a calf crop to sell. Almost all of the genetic selection (improvement) came from the sire side. tWO – While cows can be housed on concrete, natural mating on concrete is a problem. We learned very early that concrete is

64 March 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

too slick for natural mating. Too many bulls, whether they were yearlings or mature, would injure themselves during mating. Our solution, which solved the bull injury (primarily stifling) problem for us, was to allow the cows access to earth lots during the natural mating period. Cows prefer to loaf on earth as opposed to concrete - even deeply bedded concrete. In total confinement, cows will access the concrete lots to eat and drink, but will spend the rest of their time in the earth pens where natural mating occurs. Consequently, bulls stay sound and do not suffer leg injuries during mating. three – During the winter months (December through March), bedding requirements are essential and deep bedding packs increase cow comfort. Expect to use at least two, big round bales of bedding per cow during this time period. During the months of May through November, little to no bedding is required if the concrete pens are scraped free of manure at least once each week. FOur – Bedded creep areas may or may not contain creep feeders. These pens must be bedded and free of manure. Total clean out during wet weather may be required on a weekly basis. Five – Calving pens equipped with calf heat boxes make life much easier. A good rule of thumb is one calving pen per 10 cows when calving within a 60-day interval. Generally, keeping cow-calf pairs in a calving pen for no more than three days is adequate. These pens must be kept free from manure build-up and will require additional bedding to what is required in the creep areas and cow pens. Calves born during the first half of the calving season have fewer health problems (less diarrhea and respiratory illness). In most years, 75% of the cows calved within the first 40 days of the calving period. Six – Cow pens containing about 20 to 30 cows is preferable to maintaining one large pen for all of the cows. Another option is to house pregnant cows in one pen during the calving season and lactating cows in a second pen following calving. In addition, first calf replacement heifers (2-year-olds) should be housed in separate pens from the cows (3-year-olds and up). This housing approach makes diet formulation and ration allotment much easier and helps prevent over/under feeding cows of different production stages housed together.

Seven – Year in and year out, corn silage and modified wet corn distillers grains (MWDGS), and/or corn condensed distillers solubles (CDS) is the most economical diet. Using a mixer wagon or vertical grinder/mixer to feed a total mixed ration (TMR) is paramount. Feeding long stem hay in bale feeders is not practical from a labor and equipment usage perspective in confinement. eight – When remodeling an existing building or designing a new facility, include a circle-flow design for working cattle. Two alleyways are required: one for cattle and one for cattle that also serves as a feed alley. For buildings 200 feet or less in length, the calving pens and cattle chute can be located on one end of the building. For buildings longer than 200 feet (the ISU Cow barn is 706 feet long) the calving pens and cattle chute should be located in the middle of the building to facilitate access to all cow pens. Ideally, the minimum building width is 72 feet; this includes a 12-feet-wide cattle alley, 60-feet pen depth and cattle/ feed alley outside the building. I prefer a mono-slope roof or an A-shaped roof with an open ridge vent running the length of the building. For buildings open to the east or to the south, the west or north wall respectively, should have a retractable curtain side running the length of the barn to increase air flow during the summer and to block the cold wind during the winter. nine – Sanitation and herd health are important to prevent calf loss due to diarrhea and respiratory disease. Annual vaccinations of all cows for IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, Lepto, Vibrio, Haemolphilus, Clostridium and Escherichia Coli, as well as treating for external and internal parasites are essential. Use of an oral Escherichia Coli Antibody at birth in calves also helps. Treatment of navels at birth with iodine is more important in confinement calving than birthing on pasture to prevent navel ill. Continued on page 66

ten – When maintaining cows in year-round confinement, producers should consider retained ownership of the calf crop through the finishing period until harvest. An accelerated feeding program for the calves will increase weaning weight and increase marbling scores at harvest. Begin creep feeding when the oldest calf is 30 days old, but put very little feed in the creep feeders or calf feed bunks until the calves are consuming consistent feed intake. Keep the creep feed fresh until calf intake increases. eleven – Vaccinate calves around 90 days for Clostridium C + D and with a killed IBR, BVD, PI3, and BRSV vaccine. These recommendations should help make a total confinement cow-calf operation successful from a production perspective. In my next article, I will outline the economics of a total confinement cow-calf operation.

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” - John C. Maxwell. AJCA has a goal to develop youth who have an interest in the livestock industry into leaders. First of all, I want to thank everyone for allowing me to serve as your president. It’s an honor to be leading such an amazing group of young showmen and show women.

Serving as your president, I have a lot of plans to make this AJCA President year a huge success. We recently held our January AJCA Board meeting at the Arkansas Cattlemen Association headquarters in Little Rock. We greatly appreciate the support and the hospitality of the ACA. Several new ideas were thrown around, and a lot of big decisions were made. We are looking forward to see how things will unfold this show season. Two things we are excited to reveal is that AJCA will host a team fitting contest at the Arkansas State Fair Spring Livestock Show. At the suggestion of many members, AJCA will also help facilitate a ministry called “Cattle for Christ” at shows held on Sundays. I feel that our organization is definitely taking huge steps in the right direction. Meeting with the board members and advisors accounts for us making our show season the best it could possibly be. By: Blaire Wildy

At our meeting, we accepted our sanctioned show list that we are very thrilled about. We have a lot of great shows coming up. AJCA once again sang the praises of our dedicated show managers. Our first show will be at the end of January and run through May. We added a lot of new faces to our board this year, but we also have several returning members as well. Not only do we have great area vice presidents, but we also have adult advisors who have the determination to do what it takes to help make our organization the best it can be. It’s exciting to have so many members wanting to take a leadership role in such a great association. It’s also a privilege to be serving under the ACA. A lot of things we do would not be possible without them. The AJCA sanctioned show list is now available on the website. Keep checking the website for updates as show managers submit flyers, entry forms and other show details. If you have a question or suggestion, please contact our state director or any of our board members.

BIG pIcture the

StronG cattle prIceS expected aGaIn In 2015

One of the most popular sessions of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association annual meeting held recently is the Cattle Fax Outlook. Attendees at this year’s meeting heard good news from Cattle Fax analysts, including CEO Randy Blach, who said while the market peaked in 2014, prices would remain good for cow-calf producers as the industry anticipates moderate expansion in the coming year. Improved forage supplies and lower grain prices were also cited as factors that will support cattle prices. Blach explained that as cattle numbers grow and beef supplies increase, the normal price and margin environment will eventually rebalance and retreat to the lower end of the trading range. Even so, cow-calf producers should be optimistic about their returns for the next four to five years. – NCBA

tax relIef for Small BuSIneSSeS paSSeS the houSe On Feb. 13, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 636 America’s Small Business Tax Relief Act of 2015. This bill, sponsored by Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-Ohio) will make permanent the $500,000 expensing levels for small businesses under Section 179 of the tax code. NCBA President Philip Ellis said permanency to the tax code is critical for cattlemen in order to make necessary purchasing decisions and informed business decisions. The passage of this bill allows farmers and ranchers to write off capital expenditures in the year that purchases are made rather than depreciate them over time. The passage of this bill follows a letter NCBA along with 33 other groups signed to Speaker of the House, Rep. Boehner, urging the permanency of Section 179 of the tax code. “Section 179 small business expensing provides agricultural producers with a way to maximize business purchases in years when they have positive cash flow,” the letter reads. “Under the expired law the maximum amount that a small business can immediately expense when purchasing business assets

instead of depreciating them over time is $25,000 adjusted for inflation.” Agriculture requires large investments in machinery, equipment and other depreciable assets and the ability to immediately expense capital purchases provides an incentive for farmers and ranchers to invest in their businesses and offers the benefit of reducing the record-keeping burden associated with the depreciation. “We appreciate Rep. Tiberi’s leadership on behalf of small businesses like so many in the cattle industry,” said Ellis, a Wyoming rancher. “We urge the Senate to take up similar legislation and continue working toward a comprehensive tax reform that provides a stable business environment.” – NCBA

farm/ranch Women Set for aprIl and may In fort Worth According to the 2012 Census of Agriculture, there has been a 10% increase in the number of farms principally operated by women since 2007. Women now manage 15% of the nation’s farms and about 38,500 farms in Texas. A series of workshops is scheduled in Fort Worth to help cater to this trend, according to an expert.

port provided by Farm Credit Bank of Texas. Interested participants with questions about the program can request a brochure and registration form by contacting Johnson at 254-968-4144 or the AgriLife Extension office for Tarrant County in Fort Worth at 817-884-1941. The registration form is available at http://bit.ly/1JmMUG9 .

Annie’s Project is a national educational program dedicated to strengthening women’s roles in the modern farm enterprise, said Dr. Jason Johnson, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service economist, Stephenville. The series will be offered in six sessions, from 6-9 p.m. each Tuesday beginning April 9 through May 14, at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden – Garden Center, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd.

Scheduled speakers include a broad spectrum of local professionals, practitioners and experts from Texas Farm Bureau insurance, U.S. Department of Agriculture-Farm Service Agency, U. S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service, crop insurance, farm credit, as well as an agricultural attorney, family financial management specialist and a registered investment advisor. Gaining confidence to understand the complex agricultural business surrounded by the support of other farm women is the foundation of Annie’s Project, Johnson said.

Designed to help educate on the fundamentals of maintaining a farm, Annie’s Project, a women’s workshop series, empowers farm women to be better business partners through networks and by managing and organizing critical information, Johnson said. “Often farm women do not feel comfortable in the coffee shop network that is so familiar to farm and ranch men,” Johnson said. “Annie’s project provides a place where farm women can learn both from the perspectives of local agricultural professionals as well as the experiences of other class members.” Cost is $50 per person, and class size is limited to 30, he said. Registration slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The conference is sponsored by AgriLife Extension, with program sup-

“The program is based on the experiences of farm women who spend their lifetime learning how to be an involved business manager or partner with their farm husbands and other family members,” Johnson said. “The reality is that over 90% of farm women usually end up managing their personal and farm business finances at some point in their lives as a result of death, divorce or disability.” For additional information about the program and to find seminars in other areas visit www. extension.iastate.edu/annie .

A VIEW FROM A VET

Calving with

EASE Dr. Kelly Warner | elgin Veterinary Hospital

Spring at Elgin Veterinary Hospital is a time for sick calves and worried clients. To help ease some of that anxiety, this article will help to focus on primary concerns with young calves. Colostrum is Key The path to a healthy calf crop starts with high quality colostrum. Colostrum is made with immunoglobulins during the last four to six weeks of pregnancy. Cows that are appropriately vaccinated during pregnancy should transfer acquired immunoglobulins from their serum to their colostrum. Most vaccine guidelines suggest vaccinating cows 30 to 60 days prior to breeding and 30 days prior to calving. The most common vaccines used are a multi-way Clostridial (C. perfringens, C. dificile, etc.), for respiratory pathogens (IBR, BVD, PI-3, etc.), for neonatal diarrhea pathogens (E. coli, Rotavirus, Coronavirus, and C. perfringens), and sometimes for Leptospirosis serovars (L. hardjo, etc.). Timing of colostrum intake is imperative: calves need to ingest colostrum two to four hours after birth as their ability to absorb immunoglobulins through their gastrointestinal tract decreases after 12 hours and is almost non-existent after 24 hours. Calves should be monitored after birth to ensure that they are able to nurse. Calves that may require supplemental colostrum are those whose dam has poor anatomical teat/udder structure (too large of teats or lack of udder development), calf who is slow/too weak to nurse, calf who is unable to nurse (swollen muzzle due to prolonged time in birth canal), or those calves who had a difficult delivery from dystocia (stress may decrease colostrum absorption or calves may be too sore to stand). Calves should ingest at least 100 grams of immunoglobulins. Commercial powdered colostrum products are available through veterinary hospitals and feed stores. However, be aware of the quality of powdered colostrum as there are differences. Colostrum is species specific. Additionally, colostrum may be stripped from other vaccinated cows in the herd after their own calves have nursed, and stored in the freezer until needed. Frozen colostrum should be slowly warmed in tepid water (no microwaves!) before administering to calves (either with a bottle or by orogastric tubing).

Small hernias can be more of a concern than large hernias. Small

hernias may allow intestines to pass through the opening where they can become entrapped. This situation can be life threatening as the intestines may lose blood flow which can kill the tissues and may be lethal. Patients with abdominal contents trapped within a hernia may be uncomfortable (laying down often, kicking at abdomen), stop nursing or eating, have elevated temperatures, or unable to defecate. If a hernia is palpable, surgery will be required to close the body wall. This is a relatively standard surgery that does require anesthesia. An infected umbilicus also requires surgery to remove the affected tissues and a course of antibiotics. Although not proven scientifically, anecdotal evidence shows that 90% of hernias experienced in beef cattle are due to an infection of the umbilical components. As a side note, hernias can be a heritable trait. Due to this, considerations should be made when repairing hernias in breeding stock. ConClusion Calves should always be monitored closely after birth for any abnormalities. Those described in this article are common issues presented to veterinary hospitals. Some may be more life-threatening than others. However, your veterinarian can help to diagnose and treat these issues before they become worse and hopefully prevent any lasting damage to the calf.

Hello all! As I write this article for the March edition of The Show Circuit, I can only hope that each of you has had a good and productive winter. I know at this very minute our members are in the barns and on the wash racks getting their steers and heifers ready for the 100th edition of what we now call the Oklahoma Youth Expo. I would personally like to wish each of our exhibitors the best of luck this OYE with lots of memories made. As I was in Ft Worth the end of January for the open cattle show, I saw a father I knew walking down the aisle tailing a heifer to the ring behind his daughter to show. I looked at him and told him good luck. He looked back at me with a smile on his face and said everyone that fitted on this heifer today to get her ready were former OCCA members. It brought a smile to my face too. Again, I want to say GOOD LUCK to all of our OCCA competitors at this year’s 100th anniversary of the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Remember“IT ALL STARTS BEFORE SUNRISE”

Lindsey . oh | age:17

Breeds you show: Simmentals, Half Blood Simmentals, Crossbreds Siblings: 3- Brittiny 26, Allison 20, Justin 15 Favorite activities outside the show ring: I enjoy running, hanging out with friends and working in the barn. Favorite movie/TV show: My favorite movie is The Fault In Our Stars and my favorite TV show is Say Yes to the Dress or the HGTV channel Favorite singer/music group: Jason Aldean Favorite book/author: Message in a Bottle by Nicolas Sparks Pet peeve: People talking over me Names of your current steers/heifers: My steers name is Charlie and my Heifers names are Princess and Queen B What’s your favorite stock show and why? I have been showing at NAILE for 3 years and showed at Fort Worth one year. I have also been to NWSS but have never show. I don’t really have a favorite because they are all excellent stock shows and are unique in many different ways. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to work with the marketing end of the agriculture business as a sales person or financial worker. What quality/skill do you have that you’re most proud of? I love to talk and get to know different people. Favorite subject in school: Math Would you rather dance, play cards or hula hoop? Dance, because who doesn’t do that in the barn! One weird habit/skill/fact about you: At the shows when it is cold and it’s not show day I like to wear sweatpants under my wash pants. Favorite show memory so far: My favorite show memory so far is being picked Reserve Champion Simmental Heifer at the state fair and going back and showing in the final drive. Another one is this past year at the 2014 NAILE I was picked Grand Champion Simmental female in the Junior show and then being able to go back out into the final drive the night after that. Just like my sister was the year before that. Then when I was picked

Reserve Champion Simmental in the open show the following week. Least favorite show day task: Breaking down after a long day of showing Most embarrassing stock show moment: At state fair we were tearing down the stalls in the champion isle and I pulled the mat off the mulch and fell straight on my butt.

Cassidy Hanson gLinn grove | age:17

Breeds you show: Herefords Siblings: Jake 14, Austin 23 Favorite activities outside the show ring: Golfing and reading Favorite movie/TV show: Grease Favorite singer/music group: Miranda Lambert Favorite book/author: Cassandra Claire Pet peeve: When people don’t follow through with promises. Names of your current steers/heifers: Heifers: Cally, Sweet Caroline, Grace, Black Betty What’s your favorite stock show and why? National Western Stock Show – I’ve gone to that show every year since I was born. Every family has their own traditions when going to the NWSS and it’s cool to hear all about them. We have taken bulls down in the yards, to heifers up on the hill. What do you want to be when you grow up? Ag Teacher What quality/skill to you have that you’re most proud of? Determination Favorite subject in school: Agriculture classes Would you rather dance, play cards or hula hoop? Definitely play cards! During my free time at shows you will always see me and my friends playing cards, plus I can’t dance. One weird habit/skill/fact about you: I like to clean our show barn and have everything organized but when it comes to my room it’s a complete mess. Favorite show memory so far: Exhibiting the Grand Champion at the 2014 Hereford Jr. Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Least favorite show day task: Packing up your stalls to go home. Most embarrassing stock show moment: I was showing my Hereford Heifer at Aksarben 2 years ago and my heifer stepped on my pant leg and I tripped and fell down in the show ring, I popped back up and kept going with wood shavings stuck in my hair and jeans. Luckily the judge wasn’t looking.

La Prix Scholarship Winners Announced

Pictured from left to right are 2015 La Prix Scholarship Award finalists: Bailey Core, Kyndal Reitzenstein, Spencer Scotten, Brady Jensen, Thomas Glascock and Maci Lienemann. Jason Scheetz with Embryos on Snow is pictured far right.

I

owa State University junior, Bailey Jean Core, of Pleasantville, Iowa, was named the top applicant for the 2015 La Prix Scholarship during the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo.

Core will receive a $10,000 cash award for being named the top applicant. Upon graduation, Core hopes to obtain a marketing/communications position with an agriculture-based company that will allow her to help producers make progressive decisions to help feed the growing population. She also hopes to one day take over her family’s farming operation. Kansas State University senior, Brady Robert Jensen, of Courtland, Kan., was named runner-up and will receive a $3,000 cash award. The Show Circuit Features

Showyard Judging

Past Present & future By: Dale Hummel

219

1969 International Grand Champion Steer: “Conoco” shown by Les Reel, Congerville, Illinois. First crossbred steer selected as Grand Champion by judge Don Good in Chicago.

“The Showyard Judging of Livestock” was the title of an article published in the September 1915 issue of the then popular livestock publication, “The Breeders Gazette.” In this article, L. McWhoster stated “There are few lines of human endeavor that receive and should receive a greater application or concentration of effort than the showing and judging of livestock.” It is clear that a great deal has changed in regard to the purpose of the show ring in the past 100 years. The commercial producer rarely attends livestock shows today with the intention of purchasing a breeding piece for their operation. This is not without exception, but it has become a rarity. The functional purpose of the show ring has changed and will continue to evolve for as long as people choose to exhibit livestock. At this point in time, the driving force seems to be two fold; the choice of families to raise their children with all the benefits that come from the stock show lifestyle and the need to fulfill the innate competitive nature found in both the parents and youth exhibitors. Over the past 30 to 40 years, the show ring has undergone a slow but steady change away from “type conferences” and large open breeding stock shows to focus on the junior exhibitor. Nearly 100

220 March 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

years ago at the Chicago International Stock Show you could view 100 Angus bulls in a single class, all being exhibited with the purpose of directly impacting commercial-based operations. In the past decade we have experienced exponential growth of both the junior breed association participation and participation in the ever-expanding youth market shows. With this change, I believe the show ring still has as much value or purpose today as it did 100 years ago. The objectives have changed from an avenue to market breeding stock to the commercial world to an avenue to foster responsibility, morals and a competitive nature in today’s youth. It is interesting that this is occurring congruent to many state-funded youth programs attempting to make all participants winners, without regard to preparation or the degree of effort put forth. In contrast, the show ring still rewards those that choose to work both harder and smarter. Few can be crowned winners, but many return home from shows with the resolve to dig deeper to make a run at the next banner opportunity. It is the road to the show ring that builds purpose and strengthens one’s fundamentals. It is natural for many to want to still relate the show ring to the real world of commercial livestock

production. Tradition is slow to change. As a positive, basing decisions off of commercial standards lends itself to a more stable baseline for judges to adhere. However, the difficulty of determining the ideal breeding or market animal that will universally fit the various environments, management practices and drastically different packer grids is simply not possible. If a show judge is given a scenario at the beginning of each show they then could select the type of animal that best fits that given scenario. The commercial world and packer grids have no reward for show ring presence, hair, nor the many traits that the show ring industry has come to appreciate. Thus the term “show” comes back into play and our community needs to accept that the show ring industry is an industry in and of itself. This is not anything new or earth shattering, but it is good to open our eyes and better understand the industry that is a large part of our livelihood. Regardless of the type of animal that is currently popular, we are still able to gain the same benefits on our pathway to the show ring. The type of animal that is currently being selected and the future trends are often dictated by a select few popular judges and/or breeders that are in a position to push a trend in the direction that pleases their given preferences. Just as soon as we think we have

perfected and settled into a particular type of animal that is consistently popular in the show ring it is sure to change. Let five years pass and dig back through those pictures and you will see a noticeable difference. To better understand how we can make the show ring experience the best possible we need to better understand the purpose of the show ring judge and the process of which they are selected. Often a pool of potential judges is gathered, and then the show committee ranks them in their order of preference. In many cases, their choice is not an option – whether it be because of scheduling conflicts, budgets or a breeder-judge turning a show down because they will have stock being exhibited at the given show. Most shows make the judges names public prior to the show. Remember, as a parent or exhibitor, that each judge has been hired to give his or her opinion. If you are not satisfied with that given judge, it would be appropriate to constructively discuss the given issues with the livestock superintendent. Become more involved researching potential judges and share your information with show committees and superintendents. They can then attempt to build upon what the exhibitors desire in order to better accommodate the show ring experience.

A great day for the Aberdeen Angus and the Irish. Glenn McCarthy, Texas oil tycoon, shakes the hand of Cleo Yoder. McCarthy paid $10.75 per pound, a new International record, for the Grand Champion Steer. Beef from the Grand Champion will feature the opening of McCarthy’s Shamrock Hotel on St. Patrick’s Day.

In 1915, L. McWhoster stated “A man himself a breeder with wide acquaintance must of necessity be the medium through which success or failure comes to his fellow breeders and possible customers. The winners are few and the losers many. In either case the breeder-judge has nothing to gain and much to lose.” This is still an issue today when superintendents are selecting judges. It is without question that breeder-judges are generally some of the most qualified at evaluating a given species, but often tied too closely to specific genetics or individual exhibitors. When utilizing some of the leading breeders to judge, you cannot avoid some of their genetics or acquaintances participating in the given show. Often locating breeder-judges from another part of the country will help, but not eliminate the possibility. With online marketing and social media taking hold in our industry, it will continue to be more and more difficult to find competent, non-biased judges that can objectively sort the stock without pre-conceived distractions. 1946 International

222 March 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

In conclusion, L. McWhoster states “No more arduous or thankless task falls to the judging of livestock at the larger shows. Some of the most capable judges wisely refuse to act in such a capacity.” In contrast, with the transition to more youth-oriented shows the reward of working with the best youth in the country can be greatly satisfying, yet the task of pleasing the masses will always be challenging as there are few winners and many that will not achieve their goal. Take into consideration that those selected to judge shows do not take their task lightly. Much effort is being put forth by most to not only select the best animals, but also to make it a positive experience for our youth.

A truly impressive display of the best of the Aberdeen Angus breed - the final line-up of the ten head showing, and the last class of the International.

Keep this in mind the next time you disagree with a judge’s decisions. Think before you speak in order to spin the outcome to be as positive as possible for your family. Being able to exhibit stock at that show, the quality time your family is spending together and the lessons your children learned along the way to get to that show is where the true value lies. Some may refer to today’s show ring as nothing more than an elaborate game. Whether it is a “game” or simply a historical event that allows our competitive nature to thrive, embrace the good that the path to the show ring brings and do what you can to allow future generations the choice to lead the stock show lifestyle.

1972: “Bold Move” was the first Simmental-cross steer to win at Chicago, shown by Kris Lindskog of Prophetstown, Illinois, and judged by Dr. Gary Minnish.

Dominant Motor Performance READ BELOW HOW. • Sullivan’s TURBO America’s #1 Livestock Fan • Nothing matches the Turbo for Air POWER! The Turbo pushes air 5,560 feet per minute at an incredible 1,740 RPMs and an industry leading 8,453 CFM’s. This is 22% faster and harder than the other livestock fans. Keeping your livestock cool depends on providing a push of high velocity air power to your animal. • The Dominant Motor Performance ... We have over-engineered the Turbo motor for added performance. The premium Nidec-Emerson 1/2 HP sealed ball bearing motor features a very important component, a 10% larger internal stator and rotor ‘stack’ for more horse power than standard 1/2 HP motors. This extra ‘stack’ powers it to run faster than any other livestock fan that we know of. As an added benefit, the Turbo motor runs 11% cooler than competitors 1/2 HP motors, this allows cooler air output from the Turbo.

Applications online at www.sullivansupply DUE March 15, 2015.

Winners will be announced on The Pulse April 15, 2015.

• The Problem-Free Guard... Built for Longevity! Constructed of extra-thick 7 gauge and 11 gauge steel wire that is formed into a continuous onepiece spiral formation for reinforced strength that is not provided in other fans. This engineered craftsmanship has proven to create strength that is virtually crush-proof! Baked-on powder coat treatment for corrosion resistance and a cleaner appearance. No other fan guard withstands the rigors of the show road like the Turbo.
