Unbelievable Daughters > at Bush, SD
Unbelievable is an incredibly designed calving ease prospect that owns unique neck extension, unquestioned structural soundness, extra special belly depth, and super muscle shape for an Angus bull. Unbelievable is sired by the wildly popular Bismarck bull, yet offers extra depth and hair, no doubt due to his maternally stacked pedigree which consists of a double shot of legendary Flashback laced with VRD and TC Dividend. We envision Unbelievable siring extra-ordinary low birth-weight progeny utilizable in both purebred and hybrid cow herds. We can’t wait for Unbelievable progeny!

Member Name: ____________________________ Address: ______________________________ City: ________________ State: ______ Zip: __________ I was visiting at OYE with a member’s father; we were talking about the success that our OCCA members were having at this year’s Oklahoma Youth Expo—which I must say “Congratulations!” to all of you for a job well done. During our conversation, he relayed an experience he had at his county show. He told me that another parent had walked up to him and had noticed that he did not seem all that nervous about his kids competing that day. What that father said really hit home with me. He said that although he WAS nervous, it was a lot different than competing head to head against some of the best cattle in the state and nation like traveling to the various OCCA sanctioned shows across the state. This father also talked to me about the friendships that develop between our members across the state. It can range from helping each other fit, high fives coming out of the ring after a good job, to the “You’ll get ’em next time” encouragement. As our new season is beginning, I want to welcome all of our new members and their families to the OCCA family. We are glad to have you with us and look forward to getting to know you down the road. Good luck to all. May the friendships be many and the experiences be grand. Remember “It all starts before sunrise.” See you there.

Diversify with investments Still a Viable Strategy? By Wealth Management Solutions, Inc. Courtesy of Matthew E. O’Donnell Vice President Morgan Stanley Despite the developing “global economy,” some investors still believe that owning U.S. securities is sufficient – that international securities would just duplicate their efforts. But a closer look at economic and market trends reveals numerous reasons for continuing to diversify with investments from around the world. Unique economic environments – There are still significant difthe financial services and energy sectors represent a much larger percentage of international market capitalization than U.S. market capitalization. On the other hand, the technology and health care sectors represent a larger percentage of U.S. market capitalization. Valuation variations – When international stocks are less expensive than U.S. stocks, value-oriented investors and investors looking to diversify growth-oriented portfolios may find attractive opportunities in foreign markets. Currency considerations – During the 1990s, the rising value

ferences between countries’ markets and economic sectors. For example,
of the U.S. dollar curtailed the returns of foreign investments. More recently, however, the dollar has weakened versus the euro, a trend that some analysts believe could be sustainable. A weaker dollar could enhance the dollar-based returns of foreign investments. Finally, keep in mind that many of the world’s top companies are headquartered overseas. If you decide to tap into that wider universe of investment opportunity, consider the potential advantages of an international stock mutual fund. Be aware that foreign investments entail special risks, including currency fluctuations and differences in regulations and accounting practices. Swimming
is for Bovines Too By Martha Hollida Garrett
140 May 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
SC FEATURE A view of The Bull Pool and the chute leading in and out of the water.
Swimming: it’s long been recognized as an excellent way to exercise. Competitive athletes and world-class race and competition horses use it as a rehab tool, however its scope has broadened and today the bucking bull world also embraces this low impact exercise and rehab tool. The Bull Pool has been swimming bucking bulls for a just a little over a year and has found the practice adds stamina, lean hard muscle, helps rehab injuries to the feet and legs, and serves as a relaxation tool. Swimming adds to the air intake capacity in their lungs, makes them freer moving, lighter on their feet and strengthens their joints. It is especially helpful for older bulls with arthritis that have been retired from bucking, but are still used for breeding.
Marty Foutch and partner, Mike Warren, who are heavily involved in raising bucking bulls and coordinating bucking futurities, opened the facility near Canton, Texas, which is halfway between Dallas and Shreveport, Louisiana in May 2014. They swim their own bulls, but also take in bulls for a 60-day period. Bulls swim twice a week and a swim is considered one lap around the pool. “It’s easier for horses to do the swim than a bull. A bull has considerable more weight to deal with and as the bulls near the end of their two-month stay, some will be able to swim two laps. We have found that the 60-day period is vital. You can’t just swim a bull one or two times and get desired results,” describes Foutch, who grew up in the cutting horse industry and has extensive knowledge and experience in swimming horses.

The idea for swimming the bulls was one Foutch and Warren had discussed for sometime. Warren, a former National Football League player knew firsthand about the benefits of swimming and water therapy from his playing days, while Foutch had seen the difference it could make in a horse’s ability to perform and heal from certain injuries. They work closely with Dr. Tim Eberhart, a veterinarian in the area to develop the exercise, nutrition and total program they offer for the bovine athletes. “In the bucking bull business, bulls are now bucked starting as yearlings, as opposed to three and fours years of age as in the past. Their joints take a lot of pounding and they spend considerable time traveling to events. We’ve found the swimming makes them stronger, more durable, makes them feel better and it increases their appetites in the hot summer months, when they traditionally go off feed,” explains Foutch who adds they require a veterinarian referral before taking bulls for rehab purposes. Bulls are all weighed prior to starting a 60-day program and Foutch says that bulls need to be in good body condition when starting to swim. “We have found that bulls that have low body condition scores have trouble swimming, plus the swimming will take the fat off a bull and replace it with lean, hard muscle. Often owners will think the bull has lost weight when they come to pick them up, but we weigh them when they are leaving and they usually weigh about the same, but they will appear leaner,” says Foutch. The pool is located in a barn that is partially open on one side and has stalls for 34 bulls. It is 12 feet deep, 10 feet wide and is 50 feet in diameter. It is a salt-water pool and the temperature is maintained at 65 degrees year round. It holds 90,000 gallons of water and the current can be reversed. “We are very concerned about the appearance and cleanliness of the pool. We initially had three industrial pumps on it, but we have increased that to six. We have four rock filters, as well as sand filters and it is vacuumed very often. One bull is the equivalent of nine people in the pool,” describes Foutch. The bulls are walked down a chute into the pool. The bull wears a halter with lead ropes on both sides and two people walk with the bull around the pool and then he exits the same chute. “Some bulls take to the water better than others, just like in people. We find some bulls will swim harder and others take a less aggressive approach to swimming. It takes anywhere from 30-45 seconds on the average for a bull to swim the pool and once we have the bull acclimated to swimming we will often switch the direction of the current to get the bull to swim harder,” says Foutch, who runs the facility with his wife Michelle, and sons, Chase and Caden. The Bull Pool has used the pool for some barrel horses recently and a show heifer, which suffered an injury to her back. “The horses and the heifer had to be brought in each time they swam, as we don’t have the facilities to house them, but again we put them on a program with multiple swims, as we believe this is key to gaining strength and rehabbing,” said Foutch. The heifer was owned by Circle M Farms, Rockwall, Texas, a Simmental, Angus and SimAngus purebred operation, which is about one hour away from the pool. “She developed a hump in her back as a calf and as she got older it seemed to get worse and restrict her movement. The swimming stretched her muscles out and after just a couple of
142 May 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
visits, she was running and kicking her heels, which was something she had never really done. We could tell she felt better almost immediately, but we stayed on the program developed by The Bull Pool for about six weeks. She has now calved and is doing fine. I could see where this could have some real benefits for show animals, particularly steers that are somewhat tight wound and help them to move freer,” said Greg Burden, Circle M Farms, manager. Another benefit that Burden sees would be for sires that are in an AI Stud or older breeding bulls, as it would increase their physical stamina and as in the bucking bulls would provide relief from arthritis. Foutch points out that when they take outside animals in for treatment that the weather has to be favorable for hauling. “You can’t swim an animal in cold weather, then put it on a trailer soaking wet and haul it,” he says. Foutch is quick to point out that they mulled the idea over a long time before building the pool. “We didn’t know if this would work. We didn’t know if the bulls would take to the water and we often refer to it as a lot like walking on the moon. When we swam the first bull, you probably could have heard the celebration yell miles away as we were elated. Now a year later, we can really see how it has improved the bulls. It’s not a cure all by any means, but it is a tool that we think has proven to be useful in developing and maintaining bucking bulls and could be used in other areas of the cattle industry,” he concludes.
The bulls walk into and out of the water through this chute. They have halters on them, with lead ropes on both sides, as two people walk along the edge of the pool with each bull.

Even though it can seem that the practices of your cattle operation only affect what’s on your own property, they can actually affect your county, state and country. Being involved in state and national organizations such as the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association allows farmers to promote their practices and have an outlet of expression. These groups are “consumerfocused, producer-directed organizations representing the largest segment of the nation’s food and fiber industry.” With that being said, cattle producers – whether it is their first rodeo or not – are given the opportunity to be on the forefront of innovation regarding the cattle industry. I have seen firsthand how the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association protects and serves the interests of Arkansas cattlemen. After traveling to my area conference, I was overwhelmed by the excitement in every cattleman and cattlewoman’s eyes as we discussed the future of our industry and how our involvement in a state association promises a bright and profitable future. The Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association also is extremely involved in youth. With the ACA being a diamond sponsor of the Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Association, I, among nearly 200 other youth, have personally benefited from their generosity and support. State and national cattlemen’s associations are also supporting cattlemen on a political playing field. Recently in Arkansas, the ACA was instrumental in passing SB341, a bill that exempts disaster relief payments from income tax. The passing of this bill is just one example of how being involved with your state cattlemen’s association pays off, literally. Now let’s focus on the future. Young people involved in their junior cattlemen’s association learn the value of teamwork. These associations, whether it is a local, state, national or breed association, provide invaluable opportunities for young cattlemen. In turn, associations benefit from producing knowledgeable and proactive cattle producers willing to take a stand on a state and national level. The Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Association has a variety of exciting things coming our way. From a state fair team fitting contest to a super Saturday event where our members compete in a variety of educational contests, hear motivational speakers and receive year end awards, AJCA members have their mind set on growing not only as well rounded citizens but also as young cattle producers. While you are having fun washing, blow drying, combing and burning up the show circuit, always remember that there is a bigger picture and that our hard work will develop into a successful future. The young men and women that you see in the show ring will for sure shape the future of the cattle industry. By investing in youth programs like the AJCA, we as supporters of the cattle industry are not only ensuring that the beef industry will prosper, but the youth of today will be effective leaders for our industry and their communities in the future. Words cannot describe how thankful the AJCA Board of Directors and members are for the continued support of the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association as well as other supporters and sponsors. We look forward to continuing our unique relationship with our many supporters for many years to come. Good luck out on the show circuit and safe travels to all of our cattle friends and families.

View from a vet By Dr. Kelly Warner, DVM | Elgin Veterinary Hospital, Elgin, TX
Skin Wound Management Animals are notorious for finding ways in which to injure themselves (as are accident-prone people like myself). As an animal-owner, you need to be prepared for these occasions and know when to seek veterinary attention. This article will help to prepare you with some basic knowledge wound healing, wound management, and expectations when dealing with wounds. Your animal sustained a laceration – what do you need to know? 1) Where is The Wound? The location of the wound will dictate available treatment options and likely prognosis. some examples of serious wound locations are lacerations over joints, penetrating injuries to the abdomen or chest, or proximity to vital organs (the eyes) or vascular structures (large arteries or veins). These types of wounds are an emergency and should be addressed by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Wounds in areas of tension or motion (for example, over a joint) may add difficulty when attempting to close the skin. This is due to the pulling of tissues away from the edges, which will inhibit the body’s ability to lay down the regenerating structures necessary for scar tissue formation. Be aware that these types of injuries may require more time to heal. 2) hoW Big is The Wound? WhAT is iTs shApe? The size and shape of a wound may limit its ability to be closed. The larger the wound, the more difficult it may be for a veterinarian to close edges or decrease all of the dead space (open areas or pockets of tissue that are not tacked down) or to be able to place rubber tubing as a way to drain fluid from the area. deep penetrating wounds have the ability to allow air to under the skin (another reason to close dead space) causing a problem known as “subcutaneous emphysema.” This condition can complicate the healing process and is painful for the animal. The shape of the wound oftentimes dictates how it may be closed. sometimes skin flaps will lose blood flow at its margins, making the tissue non-viable. Veterinarians will adjust their closure to help alleviate these problems.
176 May 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
3) hoW dirTY or conTAminATed is The Wound? The more contaminated a wound, the greater potential for infection. contamination can come in the form of body hair, hay/feed materials, dirt, feces, etc. Veterinarians focus on thoroughly cleaning wounds when they are encountered as infection will limit healing ability or can cause a sutured laceration to dehisce (to come apart). many vets are taught the phrase, “The solution to pollution is dilution.” This means that with any contamination of a wound, it must be cleaned with appropriate antiseptics and saline and flushed/scrubbed to eliminate as much of the contaminants as possible. This can be accomplished many ways, but is commonly performed with a flush solution and debridement of tissues. debridement means to mechanically remove contaminants (not necessarily seen by the naked eye). debridement can take place with gauze, a blade, scissors, etc. during debridement, veterinarians will remove non-viable (dead) tissue, as this tissue will also inhibit the healing process. if you find a contaminated wound on your animal, call your veterinarian for first aid instructions. 4) is The AnimAl lAme? is The AnimAl heAlThY? make sure to note if the animal is sore or lame, dragging a toe, etc. or if the animal is currently sick or has previously been sick. malnutrition, health status, medications, age and many other factors can cause a wound to be delayed in the healing process. make sure to alert you veterinarian to any of these factors. 5) WhAT cAused The lAcerATion? When did iT hAppen? This is often a difficult question to answer if an animal is found after it was wounded. however, if the offending object/structure/predator animal is found or suspected, make sure to tell your veterinarian. Vets need to make sure that there are no foreign objects in a wound (pieces of wood or metal for example) as that can delay the healing process. older wounds are more difficult to close as the wound has already begun to retract and develop new tissues. Biting wounds (varmint or snake bite) can cause serious tissue damage and infection. if you find a wound that is actively bleeding, apply compression with soft clean padding. This might be anything you can find in an emergency. As a veterinarian, we want to prevent infection. however, we also want to prevent excessive blood loss!
Wound closure: cAn We close iT? is iT A good ideA To close iT? hoW long Will This process TAke? 1) primary closure or healing by First intention – This is a wound that is not severely contaminated and is closed with sutures or staples in hours of when the laceration occurred. Time is of the essence when attempting to close a laceration. The earlier that a wound is attended to, the better probability of complete closure and cosmetic outcome. 2) secondary closure or healing by second intention – This is a wound that is left open (not sutured) that heals by normal body mechanisms. The wound will eventually contract in size and develop new skin cells. This type of closure may occur with wounds that were too contaminated, edges too far apart to close, older wounds, an area where there was too much motion or tension, etc. This process can be slow and may have the potential for a greater amount of scar tissues. These wounds often require daily treatment to keep the wound clean and slightly moist. 3) delayed closure – This is a wound that is left open for a period of time to allow for treatment of infection or for the formation of some granulation tissue (for example, large wounds where skin margins are not able to be apposed) with revision and closure of tissues at a later date. There are two options for delayed closure. The first is “delayed primary closure” and second is “secondary closure with tertiary or third intention healing”. delayed primary closure occurs before granulation tissue is present (~4-5 days). secondary closure occurs after granulation tissue is present. Veterinarians will assess the wound based on all of the factors mentioned above and possible after care options (as some animals may be less amenable to having bandages changed, etc.). The vet will decide if and what antibiotics are appropriate, necessary anti-inflammatories, topical wound agents, or other reasonable therapies to aid in tissue healing. example case: “montana” (Montana’s owners gave permission to use photographs and Montana’s history for this article) i apologize for not having a livestock example of wound healing, but “montana’s” case is too valuable not to share. montana’s owners found her early on a saturday morning with a very large laceration down her left side. They were uncertain as to how exactly she sustained this trauma, but suspect she got herself stuck between a fence and a roping box in the early hours of the morning. montana’s owners immediately

presented her to the hospital for wound examination and care. The skin flap and muscle tissues were cool to the touch and contaminated with some dust/debris from being in the pasture. This indicated that the wound may have been several hours old and may be slightly devitalized (without blood supply). We as veterinarians knew that the skin flap may not survive. however, the exposed tissues needed a very large band-aid to prevent infection and leakage of serum proteins from its surface (potentially life threatening!). our best band-aid was her own skin! Typical wound preparations included sedation for montana (so she would not be concerned while we worked on her wound), antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for pain control, cleansing of the wound, shaving hair from the skin margins, “deadening” of the wound edges with an analgesic called, “carbocaine,” to block any pain response from angry nerves, removal of devitalized tissue (tissues that would not survive the repair process), and more scrubbing/flushing of the wound (“the solution to pollution is dilution!). penrose drains (sterile rubber tubing) were placed at the bottom of the wound to facilitate drainage (pus, serum, other debris). “Walking sutures” were placed along the inside portion of the wound to help decrease dead space and lessen tension. The next phase of repair involved four hours of work and a whole pack of sutures. The suturing process involved using a pattern to help relieve skin tension and took so long that the doctors involved were too tired to count the number of sutures (believe me, it was a lot)! This process was intended for the wound to heal by primary closure (as mentioned above). montana’s drains were cleaned daily and she had a “body band” to help fight the pull of gravity against her sutures and healing tissues (and to also prevent any increase in dead space under the skin). she continued to receive antibiotics and anti-inflammatories daily and was allowed very light hand walks as exercise.
178 May 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
View from a vet montana’s wound progressed as many large wounds do: some of the skin around the sutures died, she drained a large amount of pus and serum (which did decrease her body’s protein values), and her wounds smelled bad. some of the dead skin was removed seven days after she was initially treated. more skin eventually died a few days after that and needed to be removed. her veterinarians were thrilled! she had been fortunate to have that “biologic band-aid” for ten days! having her own skin to cover the wound underneath allowed her to keep that area clean, prevented excessive serum protein loss, and probably just saved her life! she always had an excellent appetite and slowly but surely increased her activity level. When she was discharged from the hospital, her wound remained open but was clean and had an excellent bed of granulation tissue. The wound is now healing by second intention. her wounds will be treated at home by her diligent owners and she will be rechecked for the next few months. All of montana’s veterinarians look forward to seeing the day when her wound is nothing but a small scar. TAke home: lacerations can be difficult for the owner, animal, and veterinarian, especially when dealing with a show animal who needs to be aesthetically pleasing to a judge. This means that with any wounds, seek veterinary advice and care to help the wound to heal as best as possible and to help the animal recover more quickly.

our feeds... 18 Show Lamb Our most popular show feed. ‘18 Show Lamb’ is the first step in our show lamb feeding program. ‘18 Show Lamb’ is a feed with a great track record for producing lambs that stay on feed, are healthy, and do well in the show ring. While ‘18’ has fed many State and County Fair Grand Champions, it has also fed thousands of class winners and lambs which placed at the top end of their class. ‘18 Show Lamb’ is easy to feed and helps make a club lamb project go well and be enjoyable. This texturized sweet feed is made with cracked and rolled grains, soy oil, liquid molasses and a special pelleted protein supplement. With a uniform particle size and no whole grains, there is less sorting and higher performance. This formulation is high in barley and ingredients which aid in promoting a firm finish.
Show pro TopdreSS is our mineral based topdress. Show Pro aids in fiber digestion, improves feed utilization, and maintains normal rumen pH. Regular use of Show Pro can aid in maintaining muscle tone, improved hair coat, add bloom, and keeps animals fresh and healthy and on feed.
Show Lamb 2000 is our higher protein, fiber, and barley texturized feed for show lambs. Use Show Lamb 2000 for lambs needing less energy, and less corn—while maintaining muscle building protein and important vitamin and mineral levels. Show Lamb 2000 is often used as the second stage in show lamb feeding program. SHOW LAMB 2000 is best used to control rate of gain and fat cover on lambs, while maintaining muscling. The formulation is different than 18 Show Lamb #1. Show Lamb 2000 is a lower Show CaLf 4000 is an intermediate fiber and calorie, lower energy, higher fiber feed. Feed about 3 energy texturized feed, perfectly suited for Heifers and lbs./day with fresh water and a small amount of hay. Steers in many show calf feeding situations When holding weight on show lambs, you can topdress 4 oz. of ‘TOPLINE’ and 2 oz. of SHOW PRO per day. Show CaLf 5000 is higher in energy and lower in fiber than Show Calf 4000. Use Show Calf 5000 when Show Sheep 165 A texturized show feed for calves need very fast gains and extra cover. show breeding stock and replacement ewes. This TopLine helps maintain the ‘tops’ of animals that are being worked and/or having weight held for a show. Topline also contains ingredients which aid in stimulating appetite, improving feed utilization, keeping animals fresh and healthy, and maintaining normal rumen pH. Show pro GoLd is a soy oil based, flavored liquid, feed supplement. Use as a source of energy, to reduce dust in feeds, improve feed conversion, and palatability. Show piG 18-120 is a nutritionally superior formula which puts on muscle and the correct finish on pigs. 18% protein and 1.20% lysine.
feed contains a fiber level in between the levels contained in 18 Show Lamb and Show Lamb 2000. Contains cracked corn, oats, barley, a pelleted protein supplement, cotton seed hulls and liquid molasses. This clean, dust free formulation can be fed to show lambs, but is specifically formulated for show and replacement ewe lambs and ram lambs. Feed from 6 months to 2 years of age. Show Sheep 165 is 16.5% protein
fiLL peLLeT is a pelleted show animal supplement that expands and retains water in the animal’s stomach, which is especially helpful in keeping a full appearance. According to the Livestock Marketing Information Center, the outlook for cattle prices in the second half of the year is down – in terms of year-over-year declines – at least compared to the record-high cattle prices of 2014, even though both first-quarter prices and second-quarter prices were higher than last year in most classes. “In the second half of last year, about everything that could push cattle prices higher occurred. This year, there are more headwinds facing fed cattle prices, especially: 1) softer beef export markets, and 2) surging pork and chicken production. Calf and yearling prices are now faced with cattle feeders that are mired in red ink after a very profitable 2014. LMIC forecasts that compared to a year earlier levels, fed cattle prices will moderate as the second half of 2015 progresses. By this year’s fourth quarter, prices for fed cattle, yearlings and calves are all forecast to be below a year ago. However, remember that alltime record high cattle prices were established in the fourth quarter of 2014.” – LMIC
NEW SENSOR TO DETECT SPOILED MEAT
DISCOvER DROPS AffINITy CARD WITH HSUS
Ever wondered if that package of hamburger you bought several days ago is still safe to eat? New technology developed by chemists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) may someday help answer that question.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), not to be confused with your local animal shelter, recently lost a big source of potential revenue when Discover ended it’s partnership with HSUS through an affinity card program that could have benefitted the faux charity anywhere from $450,000 to over $2 million, according to HumaneWatch.org.
“The sensor, which consists of chemically modified carbon nanotubes, could be deployed in ‘smart packaging’ that would offer much more accurate safety information than the expiration date on the package, Timothy Swager, the John D. MacArthur professor of chemistry at MIT, said. “It could also cut down on food waste, because ‘people are constantly throwing things out that probably aren’t bad,’ added Swager, who is the senior author of a paper describing the new sensor this week in the journal Angewandte Chemie. “There are other sensors that can detect the signs of decaying meat, but they are usually large and expensive instruments that require expertise to operate. The advantage we have is these are the cheapest, smallest, easiestto-manufacture sensors,” Swager said. The new device also requires very little power and could be incorporated into a wireless platform Swager’s lab recently developed that allows a regular smartphone to read output from carbon nanotube sensors. The researchers have filed for a patent on the technology and hope to license it for commercial development.” – Feedstuffs
HumaneWatch led a public awareness campaign, “Discover the Scam,” to draw attention to the animal rights organization’s long history of portraying itself as a champion for abused/abandoned animals when only 1% of it’s budget goes to supporting shelters. The campaign included Facebook and YouTube videos, billboards in Times Square and encouraging people to contact Discover and ask them to stop supporting HSUS. HumaneWatch challenged HSUS with an ongoing 50% Pledge, meaning when the CEO of HSUS will commit to sending “just” 50% of the organization’s income to hands-on U.S. pet shelters, the HumaneWatch website will shut down. So far, they have been waiting for more than four years for an answer to this challenge.

Making a Cow-Calf
ToTal ConfinemenT Building
EConoMiCally fEasiblE Most cow-calf operations, whether they are considered small- or medium-sized animal feeding operations (AFO) according to herd size, are usually recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as pasture operations. In a panel discussion I shared with an EPA staff member, the question was asked, “What is a pasture operation?” The EPA staff member’s response was simple: if it is green it is a pasture.
The problem from an EPA perspective is that during the winter months (late November through the first of April for those in the northern states and December – February for those in the southern states) grass is not green and pasture is often supplemented with other feedstuffs in a “dry lot” area. Many pasture operations will confine cows to a smaller area during the winter months; it may be a smaller pasture or it may be an open lot with a building and a feeding area (feed bunks, round bale feeders, hay feeding wagons, etc.). According to EPA regulations, this housing area moves by definition, and therefore enforcement, from a pasture AFO to a confined AFO a (CAFO) and potential for runoff becomes a controllable EPA concern, and may open an operation up for NPDES permitting (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System). How do you know if your cow-calf operation has potential for runoff that falls under EPA control? Ask yourself the following questions and if the answer is yes to just one, then you should consider changing your management so your operation is EPA compliant. - Does the winter housing area become a mud lot by the end of the spring? - Does the housing area contain a waterway that frequently holds standing water? - Does the waterway channel water to a ditch that ultimately runs into a creek? - Does the concrete lot in front of an open-front cattle barn allow water to flow into the earth lot that surrounds the barn? - Does your winter housing area contain a hillside that is more earth (mud) than pasture and does a waterway, ditch, or creek at the bottom of the hill channel water away from the general area? Consequently, consideration of and construction of a beef cow-calf total confinement building (TCB) for seasonal use becomes a realistic option to avoid EPA regulated runoff. Using a TCB seasonally for beef cows allows the building to be used for other purposes during the rest of the year, thereby reducing the cost of the building proportionally for the cow-calf operation. One option is to consider confining cows to a TCB from November 15 to the end of April (166 days) and utilizing a winter calving
206 May 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
program. Calving in January, February and /or March facilitates breeding by AI during April, followed by turning cows to pasture for natural mating and summer grazing.
This management scenario allows other use for the TCB from May to November (214 days total, 184 for cattle feeding days - allowing 15 days during November for barn clean-out). A winter calving program allows a TCB designed to house 200 cow-calf pairs to house 628 yearling steers providing 50 square feet per steer on a bedded pack. The TCB described in my column in the last issue designed for 200 mother cows has 11 pens that contained 60 feet of bunk space per pen. Sixty feet of bunk space would feed 120 steers (6 inches per steer) but at 50 square feet of housing per steer the limiting factor is pen space. Therefore, each pen would hold 57 steers. The 36,480 sq. ft. TCB described in my last article cost $836,640 or $61,560 per year ($307.80 per cow per year). For most operations, this building cost per cow is too expensive. However, if the TCB cost is prorated between a cow-calf operation and a feedlot finishing operation the cost per cow-calf unit is more affordable. Prorating the TCB cost over 166 days (November 15 to April 30) the cost is $27,997.15 or $139.99 per cow-calf unit per year – a more manageable dollar figure. The TCB cost per steer is $53.44. In this scenario, 628 steers weighing 848 lbs. could be purchased coming off wheat grazing in May, fed to gain 3lbs/steer/day in the TCB to put on 552 lbs of gain and market at 1,400 lbs. in late October. Another scenario that can reduce the cost of a TCB for beef cows is to consider an early weaning program. Calving in a 60-day time span from January through March, AIing cows while in confinement, turning cow-calf pairs to grass, weaning at 90 to 120 days and using the TCB to house the weaned calves beginning in June or July (depending on calving period – Jan/Feb or Feb/March) will limit the TCB cost for the cow herd to $140 per cow-calf unit per year. In this scenario, about 180 calves (90 steers and 60 heifers for finishing and 30 replacement heifers) could occupy three pens in the TCB and 456 purchased calves could occupy the other eight pens. If the calves average 3lb. ADG for 123 days, in November the calves would be ready for movement to a finishing building weighing 600 to 700 lbs. Because of increasing EPA regulations, the idea of a TCB for beef cows is a viable management option for the times. Seasonal use of a TCB when combined with another use for the TCB makes total confinement building use affordable for a beef cow operation.

th e s h o w c i rc u it a n no unce me nt s NUtRitiON SCieNtiSt, RegiSteRed dietitiaN URgeS SeCRetaRieS tO ReCONSideR Flawed ReCOMMeNdatiONS The Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture hosted a meeting for public comments on the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s report released in February. The recommendations in the report, made by government-appointed nutrition scientists, fail to fully recognize the nutritional benefits of lean beef and conclude by advising Americans to eat less meat.
Nutrition Scientist and Registered Dietitian with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Shalene McNeill, said the Advisory Committee’s recommendation to exclude lean meat from a healthy dietary pattern is a historic move that ignores decades of nutrition science and all previous editions of the Dietary Guidelines. While the Committee defends the report saying lean beef is mentioned in a footnote, the recommendations are contradictory.
“It’s time to take a step back and look at the real world application of these recommendations,” said McNeill. “Americans have already moderated their red meat servings, and science reinforces that current consumption is within amounts needed to promote good health, protecting the population from a shortfall of nutrients and providing a satisfying form of nutrition. Rather than cutting back, Americans need to be encouraged to eat lean meat with more vegetables, fruits and whole grains.” Significant scientific evidence supports lean red meat, like nutrient-rich beef, as part of a healthy diet. NCBA encourages the Secretaries to finish the scientific review of red meat’s role in a healthy diet and re-instate the 2010 Dietary Guidelines recommendation on lean meat. -- NCBA Submit YOUR Comments by May 8
“Despite being charged with examining new evidence, the Committee based its conclusions on outdated, weak evidence from stereotypical dietary patterns,” said McNeill. “Advising people to cut back on their red meat intake has had harmful consequences. As red meat intake has declined, we are consuming more empty calories and obesity rates have steadily increased. History has shown us that sweeping recommendations often get lost in translation and exacerbate obesity and nutrient shortfalls.”
You can lend your voice to the public comments on this proposed change to dietary guidelines that is so terribly misguided. But you need to act fast! Comments will be accepted through midnight EDT on May 8, 2015.
While the recommendations in the report are influential in the development of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Secretaries Burwell and Vilsack have the responsibility to review all the scientific evidence in tandem with the recommendations before developing the guidelines. The public comment period for the report is open now until May 8, 2015.
Or visit the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association website for links and helpful information about submitting comments at www.beefusa.org.
You can email your comments through an easy online process at this address: http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/ dga2015/comments/writeComments.aspx
Your input is needed as a beef producer! Do it today if you feel it’s important to keep lean red meat part of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines.

I also enjoy livestock judging and working with my show heifers, of course. Favorite movie/TV show: My favorite movie is 8 Seconds and my favorite TV show is Law and Order: SVU. Favorite singer/music group: Kenny Chesney Favorite book/author: The Hunger Games series Pet peeve: Hypocrites Names of your current steers/heifers: Bonnie, Sadie, and Sable What’s your favorite stock show and why? The National Western Stock Show is definitely my favorite. The atmosphere of this show is so unique and there is nothing else like it. What do you want to be when you grow up? I would like to work in marketing, promotions and/or advertising somewhere in the agriculture field. What quality/skill to you have that you’re most proud of? I would like to consider myself as a dedicated person. When my mind is set on something, I will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. Favorite subject in school: English classes and Agriculture classes, which led me to major in Agriculture Communications at South Dakota State University. Would you rather dance, play cards or hula hoop? Dance One weird habit/skill/fact about you: I have terrible handwriting; my teachers in high school would actually make fun of me for it! Favorite show memory so far: My favorite show memory so far happened this past year at the 2014 Minnesota State Fair. My sister Sara and I both did well with our heifers, coming home with Champion Shorthorn Plus/ 3rd overall heifer and also Reserve Champion Hereford. I had won the Minnesota State Livestock Judging Contest and was apart of the champion team earlier that week. It made for a humbling experience that I will never forget. Least favorite show day: Breaking down the cattle afterwards. Most embarrassing stock show moment: Sometimes my fingers will dislocate while I’m showing—one time, I had to lead with the opposite hand until they would pop back into place!

SC READER’S VOICE By: Bailey Rist Isn’t it funny to look back and think about how we thought our lives were supposed to happen? How as a child we said what we wanted to be when we grew up and, by gosh, we were going to be it! Why couldn’t we, right? Everything was going to go smoothly in that adolescent mindset: get through school, have a bunch a friends, own nice things, have the perfect wedding ... yet as those years come into play we quickly realize life has a different agenda. At times, life’s road blocks have gotten the best of me because I’ve been so dead set on Plan A that I never molded a Plan B. As I’ve gotten older and hit some potholes on my journey, one thing has remained constant. I’ve never wavered from my passion. I think the best thing we can do for ourselves is find our niche in this world and live it day in and day out. I found mine early, thank goodness.

Bailey R ist
The cattle industry has never been absent from my desired plan. It’s the core of who I am: bringing me friendships, success, heartache, laughs, lessons, struggles and tears. I’ve caught myself
wondering: “Why in the heck do we do this?” as another 2 a.m. alarm goes off on show day. Or, as I have watched a calf take his last breath after staying up all night caring for it. That question has never stopped me from taking off the covers and having my feet hit the floor to walk back out to the barn or get in the truck and live the gypsy life that I (along with many others, some who are reading this) crave. Monday mornings going back to reality after a show weekend never get easier, but the late Sunday nights walking back into my room and dropping my bags or suitcase get sweeter. It’s then when I look around my room at the banners on the walls and trophies on my dresser that it all sinks in again. It’s not a sense of arrogance that flows; it’s pride and accomplishment. I did that, me, the little girl who always wanted to be a large animal vet and graduate from Purdue University – who is now going to Oklahoma State for a degree in Ag Communications. You never know what a new show season holds when you’re in Iowa, Nebraska, etc. picking out the calf you are going to show. You certainly can go in with a plan, be well educated, have a big budget, but nothing is guaranteed. Having such a passion for this “sport” as many of us do sets us up for so much more than a slap from a judge. When things don’t go as well as we hope, we’re tenacious enough to go back out everyday, weekend and year to do it all over again, to strive for better. That’s what I see when I look at the felt, fringe and string all along my walls: every argument, decision and setback that got me that win. The parallels that this industry teaches us about life in general is second to none and I am so beyond thankful to be completely im-
mersed in it. It’s given me the confidence and belief in myself that no matter how many times you’re belittled or told no, you can stand up and say “Watch Me.” NO ONE can stop you from achieving your goals and from finding true happiness besides the voice in your head. Remember that when you’re trying to make life decisions and you feel like a squirrel trying to cross the road with a semi coming full blast towards you. Trust me: been there, done that. Grasp what you love to do and never let it go; you are the only mode of transportation to living the life you’ve always dreamed of, even if you take some detours and pit stops along the way.

ConfidenCe in ag improving New surveys suggest consumers feeling more comfortable, confident with food production.
E
By Kindra Gordon fforts to reach consumers with accurate information about American agriculture appear to be working, according to results from two surveys. The Center for Food Integrity (CFI) conducted their annual Consumer Trust Research among 2,005 consumers for the eighth consecutive year, and CEO Charlie Arnot reports that the 2014 results revealed positive trends when it comes to attitudes about the food system compared to 2013. “We’ve seen improvement in the number of people thinking food production is moving in the right direction,” says Arnot.
Specifically, when asked if the food system was headed in the right direction, 42% of respondents said yes. That’s up 8% from 2013. By segment, the study showed: • Only 33% of women believe the food system is on the wrong track compared with 42% from last year. • Nearly half of men, 48%, believe the food system is headed in the right direction. That’s up from 39% last year. • In 2013, 43% of Early Adopters believed the food system was headed down the wrong track. That dropped to 36% in the 2014 survey, with 40% indicating it’s headed in the right direction. • For the first time, the CFI survey asked the same question of Moms, Millennials and Foodies. Nearly half of the Foodies believe the food system is headed in the right direction, followed by Millennials and then Moms. Arnot explains that an additional aspect of the survey includes asking consumers to rate their level of concern about 18 different “life issues” on a scale of 0 to 10. The issues include such broad topics as the rising cost of healthcare, U.S. unemployment, the affordability of healthy food, personal financial situation and having enough food to feed people in and outside the U.S. The 2014 responses indicated the following top five concerns: rising cost of healthcare (72%); rising cost of food (72%); U.S. economy (70%); keeping healthy food affordable (70%) and rising energy costs (66%). “Concerns for costs and safety are usually the top issues on consumers’ minds,” Arnot notes. He also points out that in 2014 the lowest ranked concern among U.S. consumers responding to the survey was “having enough food to feed people outside the U.S.” (33%). To this he says, “Sharing messages about having abundant agriculture to feed the world is not going to be as compelling of a talking point. Instead, U.S. consumers want to hear what agriculture is doing to keep healthy food affordable.” He continues, “The good news is we can talk about how we utilize technology and systems to do that. That’s the point we should be emphasizing.” Another interesting aspect of this year’s survey asked consumers where they get information, as well as who they trust as information sources. Regarding where consumers go for information, Arnot says, “It’s no longer T.V.” This is the first year the CFI survey results showed online websites as the top source for information across consumer sectors including Mom’s, early adopters, and Millennials. Interestingly, Moms’ second-highest ranked source for information is family.
226 May 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
And, who do consumers trust as information sources? Arnot says this revealed some of the best news for farmers and ranchers. In the ranking, farmers and ranchers were at the top of the list as a credible source, along with university scientists, whereas Dr. Oz was ranked at the bottom. “People trust you more than they trust Dr. Oz! People need to hear your voice; you are a trusted voice on ag and food issues,” Arnot emphasizes for farmers and ranchers. That said, he cautioned that sharing messages with consumers takes time. “Those in ag are accustomed to fixing everything in the next cycle of production. But with the public, building trust needs a longer horizon and must be done over time. Iowa survey goes one step further An annual survey of more than 350 food-minded Iowans indicates similar trends in improved consumer awareness and understanding about how their food is grown. But more importantly, it reveals that farmers and foodservice partners who have formed the Iowa Food & Family Project (Iowa FFP) are “moving the needle” of consumer trust and confidence in a real and positive way, says Aaron Putze, who is coordinator for Iowa FFP. The Consumer Pulse survey, conducted by Campaign HQ of Brooklyn, Iowa, polled 353 health-conscious Iowans who are mostly female, highly educated and affluent and make the majority of their household’s food purchases. Respondents were queried on a variety of food topics, their familiarity with the Iowa FFP and how that familiarity changes their perceptions about today’s farms and food system. It found that 95% of respondents said they are “very” and “somewhat” knowledgeable about how the food they purchase is produced, up 6 percentage points from last year and 9 points from 2012. The survey also found 81% of people have a positive impression about farming. Fifteen percent of respondents said farmers “do things right regardless of financial benefit,” up 6 percentage points from last year. In addition, 31% of those surveyed were familiar with the Iowa FFP, up 6 points from a year ago. Their awareness of Iowa FFP matters, says Putze. When compared to the overall sample, those familiar with Iowa FFP were: • 13% more likely to say they have a positive image of farming • 10% more confident that farmers care for the well-being of their livestock • 9% more confident that farmers protect the environment • 9% more trusting that farmers balance doing what’s right
228 May 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
with financial considerations “What these numbers tell us is that we’re influencing the food influencers,” Putze says. “Those involved in the Iowa FFP have a passion for helping Iowans be healthier, happier and more informed about the food they love and the farmers who grow it. “Our work is groundbreaking and the results are real, positive and measureable,” he adds. Additionally, the survey results showed: • 71% said farmers were doing a good job caring for the well-being of livestock and poultry (up 11% over the previous year). Only 6% of respondents held a negative opinion of farming or were indifferent. • An 11% increase in the respondents who believe that farmers are doing a good job of caring for their livestock, • A 5% increase in peoples’ trust that farmers are doing a good job in caring for air, soil and water quality. 61% of those surveyed believe growers “balance doing what’s right” with profit, • 14% think farmers are “driven solely by profit,” down four points from last year. The Iowa Food and Family Project was launched in 2011 to facilitate greater confidence among food-minded Iowans about how food is grown and acquaint them with the farmers who grow it. It involves nearly 40 commodity and foodservice partners including the Iowa Beef Industry Association. Also of note from the survey, food labeled “local” was viewed most positively, at 62%, compared to hormone-free (48%), antibiotic-free (43%), natural (27%), organic (25%) and non-GMO (22%). Those who believe food labeled organic is better than non-organic food declined 11% over the previous year. The survey also indicated consumers were less concerned with quality of food (over the previous year) but more concerned with price (up 7%).

“FairView Angus Ranch has used Standing Heat estrus detection patches for the last couple of years with great success. We use around 1000 patches a year and have minimal if any loss, the patch adhesive is so sticky they can actually be difficult to get off the cow. We’ve tried other brands of heat detection patches, but once you use the Standing Heat system you won’t want to use anything else. We feel we are catching more true heats, in turn getting more cattle bred. We’ve tried other brands of heat detection patches, but once you use the Standing Heat system you won’t want to use anything else.”
