“Stock Show U is a great organization to help kids learn how to take care of their animal before and during the show. I have been to many fitting clinics and Stock Show U is easily the best I've attended. They did a great job of teaching you how to fit your animal for show day. I also want to thank Stock Show U for sponsoring our Shorthorn Junior National fitting contest.”
- Riley Ruble
Riley attended the 2012 Minnesota Grad Program; the skills he acquired helped his team win the Intermediate Team Fitting Contest at the 2012 Shorthorn Junior Nationals.
2012 Stock Show University Two-Day Complimentary GRAD PROGRAM Clipping Clinics A large portion of these winter clinics will be on clipping and some fitting.

“Stock Show University taught me different clipping and fitting styles that are being used today that I did not know about. I considered myself to be an alright clipper and fitter before I went to a clinic, but coming out of the clinic I learned more than I ever thought I would, and I would say that the clinic helped me a lot.” - Trevor Moore Trevor acheived his goal of winning the Grand Champion Steer at the Iowa State fair, but more importantly he clipped his steer himself. Trevor gained confidence from the new skills he learned from the 2011 Winter Clipping Clinic in Muscatine Iowa .
“Stock Show U was so much fun. The things I learned from the grad program will help me be successful in the show ring for the duration of my show career. I had never used things like paints and leg builders so it was really fun to learn about them and get to use them. I also really enjoyed learning to clip. The professors showed me a lot of good tips and gave me a strong base to start learning to clip. It’s a work in progress but I’m slowly trying to learn to clip my own calves. Thank you so much Sullivan Supply for running such a great program!” - Logan Vail Logan was awarded best senior fitter at the 2012 Ohio Grad Program in Lima, OH.

Keys to Reaching the Winner’s Circle Brought to You by Weaver Leather Livestock The Key to
The Right Look: Products with Style and Substance
Signature Series Products “There’s an advantage in the ring to having a clean, professional appearance. That’s why I’m so adamant about using only the highest quality products that not only look great and make cattle look great, but also function properly and stand up to the rigors of life in the show industry.” Kirk Stierwalt, Professional Cattle Expert
Carbon Fiber Show Stick Known for its strength, lightweight properties and sleek appearance, carbon fiber makes this the luxury car of show sticks. Test results show that this stick is, on average, 41% stronger and 25% lighter than typical aluminum sticks on the market, so leave your scratched, dinged and dented one at the gate and make this your go-to choice for the ring.
Black Magic Show Halter Distractions don’t win banners. With quality black bridle leather, matching hardware and low profile styling, this trend-setting halter practically disappears on your black steer or heifer so the judge gets a true, unhindered look at its features.
The classy, refined look of carbon fiber will give any professional showman an edge in the show ring
Kirk Stierwalt Neck Sweat System A clean, attractive neckline makes a difference in the ring and achieving it is made easy with this neck sweat unlike any other on the market. The black Flex Foam liner retains heat for the perfect sweat while the easy-to-clean channels trap dirt and grime to eliminate buildup on your cattle’s skin.

The life of
An Ag Girl
Real life watermelon feeds.
doing things the same old way they have for years. Young people are the lifeblood of small and rural communities, however if they don’t find that opportunity to belong it can be quite discouraging.
It has been almost a year since my move to rural Iowa, and I am starting to adjust back to small town living. After nearing five years of being in a college town, and then almost another four years of town life and being only 45 minutes from Kansas City, you start to get used to having a Target within 10 minutes of you, a plethora of weekend activities and an endless choice of dining experiences. Now, I am very good friends with the UPS man due to online shopping, and dining choices include a couple fast food options, the pizza place or the Mexican restaurant. If I can’t find it at Wal-Mart, maybe I didn’t need it that badly anyway. My new home isn’t itty bitty by any means, and I grew up in a really tiny town; so in a way it is nice to get back to small town life. However, being the new girl in town, it is sometimes hard to find your place. Especially when you are in that awkward stage between the end of your college years and not ready to start having children. The good old days When I attended Kansas State University, a couple weeks into the first semester one of the best events of the year was held. It was called, Watermelon Feed. Tables upon tables lined the lawn of Weber Hall (where the majority of my agriculture classes and livestock judging practices were held). At each table was a different club or campus organizations you could join. All you had to do was walk up, say hi, ask some questions about the group, write your email down, and boom you were now involved. And then you ate watermelon. But college days are long behind me, and now it is time for me to find new ways to get involved. However, unfortunately there isn’t a Watermelon Feed in our town, nor in many rural towns. If you haven’t figured it out, I am a pretty outgoing person, however it can be intimidating to get involved in a new community. Especially when I am used to taking the lead, and I’m finding that many groups that I am interested in are
For those people that are well established in your communities, remember that some of us are craving to be a part of something bigger – we just need direction. And sometimes we need to be asked, because we don’t always know what is out there. Recently, my husband and I learned that there is a 4-H judging team in our area. Not only would this be a great way for us to offer our skills, but we have invited the team to come out to our place and work out on our Hereford heifers whenever they would like. One small step in the right direction. I remember a sermon that my pastor once gave. He talked about reaching beyond our church and seeking out those that may be looking for a relationship with God. For some people, church can be a scary thing, however if we were to ask that person to join us on a Sunday they might be more willing to take that first step. I think the same applies for our communities. It would be nice to attend a local cattlemen’s, fair board or 4-H meeting with someone that knows their way around the organization and can take the time to introduce you to the other people involved in the organization. My husband and I are now members of the Iowa Farm Bureau, and I look forward to getting involved in this organization at both our local and state levels. We are hoping to find that sense of community in this group. For me, and I would say a lot of other young people, it is about finding organizations that you can: 1. Make a difference; 2. Give back; and 3. Be a leader. Us 20-somethings are pretty motivated by those three things. Good luck to everyone else that is in a similar situation. To those that are currently involved in your communities, ask that new couple or individual in your town if they would like to get involved. The more people we get and keep involved in agriculture, the better off our communities will be.

Oklahoma Club Calf Association - Oct 2012
State Fairs are winding down Congratulation to all the exhibitors who participated. The severe drought in Oklahoma is still bad and I know in other places it is a concern. Hope it is raining in your part of the world when you read this. OCCA Jackpot Shows are fixing to get fired up. There are some new shows this year, check the OCCA web site for those dates, also check your point make sure your points are correct and that they have you in the correct district. Thanks to all the consigners and everyone that help with the Wanted One Sale at the Tulsa State Fair. A big thanks goes out to Morgan Sheive, our sale manager you did a great job! Again we want to thank our Platinum Sponsors CM Trailers, Purina, Cinch and Curl Girl without you guys we would not be able to make this happen. Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook, and the web site for your point. Safe travels and good luck at the shows.
Tim B Stidham, OCCA President www.oklahomaclubcalfassociation.com
Note: According to OCCA Rules, winners of the “Overall Top 10 Exhibitors” are not eligible to compete for “District Awards”.

announcements 2013 Beef aMBassadors announCed Mark Your Calendar for BIf In oklahoMa
Next year marks a hallmark event in Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University, in collaboration with the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF), will be hosting the 45th Annual Beef Improvement Federation Research Symposium and Meeting. The last time the BIF convention was held in Oklahoma was March 1981, when the meeting was held in Stillwater. BIF is an organization dedicated to coordinating all segments of the beef industry, from researchers and producers to retailers, in an effort to improve efficiency, profitability and sustainability of beef production. BIF was initiated almost 70 years ago to encourage the use of objective measurements to evaluate beef cattle. Continuing the tradition, BIF is now the clearinghouse for developing standardized programs and methodology for recording of performance data for all traits from birth weights to carcass traits. The 2013 BIF convention will be held in Oklahoma City from June 12-15, 2013, at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center. More information on the convention will be posted at a later date on the BIF website (www.beefimprovement.org) and through the new genetics and genomics extension portal on the Oklahoma State extension website.
Erin Morrison (Minnesota), Katie Stroud (California), Emma Jumper (Arkansas), Jacquelyn Brown (Oregon) and Chandler Mulvaney (Alabama) were chosen as the 2013 National Beef Ambassador Team at the annual National Beef Ambassador competition, which is funded in part by the Beef Checkoff. Five out of 22 senior contestants, ages 17 to 20, were selected to be ambassadors as they were judged in consumer promotion, classroom presentation, media interview technique and issues response. Contestants from throughout the country vied for a place on this elite team of agriculture advocates and $5,000 in cash prizes sponsored by Farm Credit. Additionally, the American National CattleWomen Foundation, Inc.and Monsanto gave five educational scholarships totaling $5,000. The event was held in Sacramento, Calif. This year’s contest also hosted a junior competition for youth beef industry advocates ages 12 to 16. Nine passionate contestants vied for cash prizes, competing in two categories: media interview and consumer demonstration. The first place winner was Austin Gaspard (Louisiana). This was a repeat first-place win for Gaspard, as he was the JR winner in last year’s contest. The second place winner was Annie Belden (California), and the third place winner was Sage Mijares (New Mexico). While preparing for this national beef promotion and education competition, youth across the nation learn about beef and the beef industry with support from state CattleWomen and Cattlemen’s associations and state beef councils. The preparation highlights industry issues of current consumer interest. Winners of the state competitions compete at the national level where they receive additional training. After the event, the youth ambassadors speak to industry issues and misconceptions and educate their peers and mealtime decision makers about beef nutrition, cattle care, safety and more during consumer events, in the classroom and online. For more information about the National Beef Ambassadors program, follow them on Twitter at @beefambassador or visit www.nationalbeefambassador.org or www.ancw.org.

According to the Sept. 20th release of three-month outlook from the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, many parts of the Midwest can expect a higher probability of above-normal temperatures in the time span of November-December-January 2013. The orange shaded area in the graphic signifies above-average temps, the tan shaded area signifies normal, the blue area relates to below normal temps, and those regions with no shading at all have equal chances of either above, below or normal temperatures. On the precipitation side, Texas and all the states between it and the Atlantic are predicted to have above-normal precipitation during these three months, as indicated by the green shading. The Northwest corner of the country can look for below-normal precipitation and everyone else has equal chances for above, normal or below. If you’d like to follow along as these forecasts change, visit the NWS Climate Prediction Center website (www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/index/php) for official 90-day outlooks issued once a month near mid-month and many other weather and climate resources available for free, such as the U.S. Seasonal Drought Outlook you see here.

drawals from variable annuities will be taxed as ordinary income. 7. Consider professionally man¬aged and tax-advantaged invest¬ment strategies. Now is a good time to evaluate the overall tax efficiency of investments in your accounts. Beyond municipal bonds, consider tax-efficient mutual funds or separately managed accounts (SMAs) that are managed to limit the number of taxable events within your portfolio. These may include tax-managed funds and tax-exempt or low-turnover index funds with mini¬mal capital gains distributions. 8. Review dividend distributions of your current portfolio. Dividend income will potentially receive the most dramatic impact if higher tax rates go into effect. If the top qualified dividend tax rate rises from 15% to 43.4% as suggested — a 189% increase — you will want to look closely at your dividend income and consider realizing gains now to take advantage of lower tax rates. 9. Engage in gifting and legacy planning. After 2013, unless there is legislation to the contrary, estate and gift taxes are sched¬uled to return to rates that are higher than they have been for many years. If you plan to leave an estate to your heirs, you may want to consider strategically transferring assets this year as part of your overall plan. With the gift tax rate at an all-time low and the exemption at an all-time high, 2012 may be a good year to consider larger gifts, even taxable ones. 10. Focus on Your Goals First. As critical as it may be to understand the potential effects of possible tax increases, it is even more important not to make tax planning the sum total of your planning. First and foremost, you should focus on what you want most for yourself and your family now and in the future. Keeping those primary objectives always in the forefront, turn to your financial professional to see how you can best achieve them in the most tax-efficient manner. With changing markets and political pressures affecting the economy — specifically tax legislation and income tax rates — now is the time to be especially vigilant in reviewing and adjusting your overall financial strategy to keep investments aligned with your financial goals. Marinated duck - - - - - By Dan, the Duck Man Ingredients: 1 cup diced onions 1 c bell pepper Marinade Liquids: ¼ cup Kikkoman Soy Sauce 1/3 cup Worchestershire 1 cup white wine, preferably Chardonnay 1 cup water Other needed ingredients: Flour One dozen eggs 1 cup milk Olive oil Boned duck meat Saute the onions and bell pepper, set aside. Simmer the marinade liquids, adding one teaspoon sugar, and the sauteed onions and peppers. Pound the duck meat (use not more meat than will soak in the marinade, or make more marinade). Put duck meat into the hot marinade and let sit for 3 hours in the refrigerator. In a separate bowl, mix eggs and milk. Take meat one piece at a time from marinade and put directly into a dish of flour. Then dip each piece in egg mixture, then place back into the flour. Shake off excess flour before placing each piece in heated pan with just enough olive oil to fry meat nicely. Sizzle for no more than 2 minutes per side. Venison tenderloin Bake Ingredients: 2 lb venison tenderloins, back strap or chops 15 bacon strips, each piece will be wrapped vertically around the tenderloin Marinade: 2 cups homemade soy sauce 3 cups homemade brown sugar, packed 2 tsp homemade garlic powder 2 tsp homemade onion powder 1/2 tsp homemade hot sauce 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper Whisk the marinade ingredients in a bowl and pour into a resealable bag that the tenderloin will fit in. Add the tenderloin and make sure the piece of meat is covered in marinade. Place in the refrigerator overnight. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, spray a 9x13 inch pan with vegetable oil. Take the venison out of the marinade. Wrap the bacon around the tenderloin girth, and cover entire tenderloin with bacon. Place carefully in the prepared pan and pour the reserved marinade over the entire tenderloin. Bake (rare: 25-30 minutes; medium: 30-40 minutes; well done: 45-55 minutes) according to how you want the meat. Place on a grill or broil to crisp the outside of the tenderloin and the bacon. Let the meat rest for at least 10 minutes and carve the width of the bacon slice, so each portion has a slice of crispy bacon around it. Find more recipes like this at: misshomemade.com.

Nutritional Considerations for Donor and Recipient Females
Not only are emaciated cattle not attractive to look at, they are also not going to get the job done, reproductively speaking. Females that are too thin may have problems with normal estrous cycles and conception. This is a challenge for commercial herds that rely on timely calving of the entire herd. It is an even greater challenge for breeders working with elite genetics and using advanced reproductive technologies such as embryo transfer (ET) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) to multiply the success of one or more superior individuals. A good ET and IVF program is an excellent tool to use to propagate elite bloodlines, but good nutrition must be provided to these cattle to truly achieve a return on the investment in reproductive technologies.
lactation, growth (for young females) and reproduction. This means that when adequate nutrition is not provided, reproduction is the first to be negatively affected, and the last to return to full function. Research indicates that a cow’s body condition is closely linked to her reproductive performance. Many breeders use body condition score (BCS) as a management tool to evaluate nutritional needs of cattle. This is done by evaluating the back, tail head, pins, hooks, ribs and brisket of cattle. Using the BCS system, breeders assign a numeric score from 1 to 9, with 1 being extremely thin and 9 being very obese. This helps estimate a cow’s energy reserves (muscle and fat) and thus her nutritional needs.
Prioritized energy use When cattle consume energy through feed, they prioritize their bodies’ needs as follows: maintenance (heart, lungs, kidneys, etc.),
1-4 is “thin” Cows that are angular and bony with minimal fat over the back, ribs and rump, and no visible fat around the tail head or brisket, are
170 November/December 2012 • theshowcircuit.com
considered “thin” and given a score of 1 to 4. “Thin” cows have reproductive problems including failure to cycle, failure to conceive, increased calving interval and increased days to estrus (heat). Similarly, thin cows tend to have smaller calves with less vigor. In the worst cases, “thin” cattle become emaciated, making them susceptible to a variety of health problems and sometimes leading to death. 5-7 is “ideal” “Ideal” cows are in the 5 to 7 range and have a good overall appearance. A cow that is scored 5 has visible hips, with some fat over the hooks and pins, but the backbone is not visible. Meanwhile, cows that have a BCS of 6 or 7 are fleshier, with not visible ribs, and some fat around the tail head and brisket. 8-9 is “fat” An obese, or over-conditioned cow looks very smooth with bone structure hidden from sight. These cows that are scored an 8 or 9 for BCS may have large fat deposits around the tail head and on the pin bones. “Fat” cows are not only costly to maintain, they may have impaired mobility and greater likelihood of calving difficulties. Like “thin” cows, “fat” cattle may also fail to cycle and conceive. Bos Taurus breeds and crossbreds will more uniformly distribute extra body weight, while Bos Indicus cattle are more likely to put fat on over the hooks and pins. Breed make-up of individual animals also affects how she lays down fat. Different breeds or breed influences may mean that the herd is not uniform in BCS, despite similar feeding programs.

Supplemental feed Breeders should consult an animal nutritionist, extension agent or veterinarian to discuss how nutrition affects cattle’s reproductive performance. If cattle are not getting adequate nutrition from their normal grazing program, industry experts recommend supplementation. Feeding a small amount of protein supplement, such as soybean meal, to thin cows during the summer can go a long way toward increased body condition. If cost seems prohibitive, grouping animals according to BCS and focusing on the animals with the greatest needs or those who have elite genetics and warrant special care may be a good management approach. Advanced reproductive technologies For breeders using ET or IVF on elite females, it is all the more important that donors’ nutritional needs are met. Donors that are too fat or too thin will have trouble producing viable embryos in embryo transfer. Putting donors that are too thin on a gaining plane of nutrition 60 days prior to the embryo collection can help yield better embryo results. Those 60 days are crucial to follicle production. Conversely, donors that are too fat may need to be put on a diet before attempting to flush them again. Weight may first need to be taken off them, and then later return to them to a gaining plane of nutrition the 60 days prior to the next flush. A negative plane of nutrition equals negative reproductive results. Experienced ET practitioners should be able to give sound management advice and answer questions about the needs of a donor.

For instance, Hooter remembered it was one of his first kneehigh customers who informed him, “I don’t get this whole cookies and milk deal. I thought you brought me stuff because I was good or because you liked me or something.” “That’s right sweetheart. Have you been good this year?” “Good enough. So why do I have to give you cookies and milk? That seems kind of like a bribe. Come to think of it, can’t you get into trouble for peeping in people’s windows? Mom says that’s why my Uncle Bob had to go away.” “Hmmm…ahhh, yep, that’s right,” Hooter had said. “So, you don’t ever want to peep into anybody’s windows. Santa doesn’t. I just wriggle my nose and poof, there I am underneath your Christmas tree with my bag of goodies.” “Impossible,” said the little boy, crossing his arms in defiance. “Mom sets up rat traps all around the tree so the cat will stay away from it. You’d get mooshed.” So it went, but Hooter always enjoyed the challenge. One thing had changed, though. Hooter noticed as time went on the kids were asking for fewer material gifts and for more of the stuff that kids used to take for granted. Some of them asked for a new mommy or daddy to replace the one that had disappeared because of unexplained causes, natural and otherwise. Others asked if Santa might not bring a job for a parent or for the parent of a friend in need. Hooter did his best to explain that he could only do his best, but he always felt like waddles on a porcupine about then.
All I Don’t Want
It was going much the same this year when little Hector Rodriguez showed up on Santa’s lap. Hector is a favorite of all the moms, small for his age, big black eyes, straight black hair and a mischievous smile that glows in the night. Mr. Rodriguez ran some cows but spent most of his time on the road in West Texas with the construction company he’d built from scratch. Mrs. Rodriguez tended Hector and his new little sister. In between, she was a whirlwind of help to everybody for miles around. Hector was polite, but he seemed a whole lot less interested in his visit to the Apache Flats North Pole than his mom. “Hector, have you been good this year?” asked Hooter, gleefully sticking his frosted beard into Hector’s face.

“It’s hard to tell sometimes, you know?” said Hector, holding Santa’s gaze. “Indeed. I know exactly what you mean,” said Hooter, stroking his beard. “Well, what would you like this year, Hector?” “There’s nothing I really want,” said Hector. “Just give anything you were going to give to me, to my sister. I’ll tell you what I don’t want, though,” said Hector, lowering his eyes, then following with his tiny head. “What’s that?” said Hooter, instinctively ready to fight anything or anybody who was taking the joy out of the season for his little friend. “I just want that Mr. Pilkington to not come to the Christmas Pageant. I get to play little Baby Jesus, you know?” The man in question, Maurice Pilkington, was an agent from the Texas State Judicial system. He’d come to a city council meeting a month before to tell the residents of Apache Flats that it had come to the department’s attention that the town intended to have public prayer as part of their annual Christmas Pageant, and since that pageant took place on what was technically state ground, the state could not allow the pageant to take place there unless the town promised to remove prayer from the evening’s agenda. “But we always have prayer,” pleaded the gravel-to-rafters crowd that showed up, kids and all, to defend their right to do what they’d always done. “Nobody in this town is against it, why should you folks care?” To his credit, Pilkington appeared to be an unwilling messenger who would have much rather been playing bugle at the Alamo than face the crowd he saw before him. But he had a job to do, he told them. He empathized, but if the pageant was going to take place in the exhibit building at the county fairgrounds, there could be no prayer. Technically, the exhibit building—the only structure in the county large enough to accommodate the annual pageant crowd—was built on an annual easement granted by the state after some eagle-eyed land manager spied shifting property lines two decades ago. Hooter looked down at Hector, as much at a loss as all the parents had been at the city council meeting. How do you defend what’s right in front of the kids without teaching them to act in a way that you’ve been telling them isn’t right? “Yep, I know you get to play Baby Jesus. And, I’m looking forward to it. You’ll be the best Baby Jesus since the real thing,” said Hooter. “Don’t worry about Mr. Pilkington. The town has it all worked out.” “Really?” said Hector, brightly. “It’ll be fine,” said Hooter, thinking the only thing that would make it fine is if someone could swat Mr. Pilkington
between the ears with a small anvil. “Say, isn’t that your baby sister? Whatya say we ask her what she wants?”
The Right Light
Actually, since the town didn’t want to expose the kids to such ugly nonsense, they agreed to the traditional presentation of the Christmas story, acted out by the children of Apache Flats and directed as always, by both the Apache Flats First Baptist Church and the Rio Rojo County United Methodist Church. Unlike past pageants, however, which ended with a benediction and the Lord’s Prayer, they agreed to finish up singing Christmas Carols. No one felt good about it. Sure enough, on the night of pageant, Pilkington showed up, along with a couple of Texas Rangers in tow. “You ever notice how that guy looks just like Ichabod Crain?” said Izzy Franklin, leaning over to Hooter in the front row. He was referring to the eagle nose and the Adam’s apple that looked more like a skin-covered tennis ball set on constant quiver. “Good observation,” said Hooter, “But wrong season, knucklehead. Now, hush. Game’s about to start.” Like every year, on cue, the lights went out. Then, after a fair amount of ruckus, the lights came back on, revealing the Nativity scene set atop the makeshift stage: Mary on one side of the manger, Joseph on the other and nestled in the crib so you could barely see the edges of his black locks was the Baby Jesus, Hector Rodriguez. Standing warily by were several other local kids dressed as sheep, oxen and donkeys. Justin Fenster had wanted to dress up like a camel but the oversized head constructed for him was too heavy. He kept losing his balance and flopping into the donkeys, which then fell into the oxen, domino style, and so on. Dangling high overhead was an old tattered tinfoil star, the Christmas Star that Lonnie Johnson’s dad had fashioned years ago. Things went without a hitch as the first two Wise Men clambered up the stairs and offered their gifts at the foot of the Manger. But Justin Fenster, relegated to Wise Man status after the camel fiasco, tripped on his long robes just as he reached the manger. As he went down, the metal box that was supposed to contain Myrrh flew out of his hands, hit Joseph square in the eye, and the rabbit pellets kept inside for ballast went scattering across the stage floor. Effect of the Drought on Beef Cow Reproductive Performance
I’m not referring to just any drought, but the drought of 2012. to abort. Hot days and hot nights when the temperature fails to In a normal year, fall birth weights are lighter than winter and drop below 80ºF can cause cows to become anestrous and stop spring birth weights. Hot weather curbs cows’ appetites. Cows cycling. Therefore, the reason cows don’t show heat is not because consume fewer nutrients, especially energy, and calf birth weights they are bred but because they are not cycling. Hot environmental are lighter. During a drought, especially a severe drought like temperatures can negatively effect bulls, too, by killing sperm. It 2012, decreased cow nutrient intake is magnified as pastures burn takes 60 days from the time sperm are produced until they are ejaculated. Therefore, hot-weather sterility can last for the greater up and grazing opportunity is limited. The combination of decreased appetite, limited grazing and part of the breeding period. It is always important to pregnancy check cows shortly after the excessive heat will decrease fetus growth rates, resulting in lighter birth weights. In some cases, light birth weights transfer into end of the breeding season. Those producers who adhere to a 60small newborns with reduced vigor and vitality at birth. Produc- 90 day breeding season may have a higher than normal number ers can minimize reduced vigor and vitality of newborn calves by of open cows this fall. Those producers who don’t pull bulls until providing supplemental energy and protein to the mother cow weaning time may not have as many open cows, but they could have a lot of late-calving cows next spring. The down side is a during the last one third of gestation. As an example, my fall calving cows completely ran out of pas- reduced or a late calving, light weaning weight, 2013 calf crop. This is exactly cup half full perspective. One of the big problems for cow-calf producers still enduring how we feed winter-calving cows in January/February. As a result, the drought of 2012 into the fall is thin cows. the cows gave birth to vigorous calves that Cows with body condition scores (BCS) benursed within 30 minutes following birth, low 5.0 will require increased supplementaeven though the Simmental calves averaged Those producers who adtion during the last one third of gestation only 65 pounds. fewer tons of corn silage and did not have enough corn silage to fill all the silos. As part of a U.S. Department of Energy project, ISU has 40 acres of switchgrass (SG). During 2012 we harvested approximately 600 big round bales from this 40 acres. During 2013 we will harvest approximately 300 bales. We are grinding this switchgrass that is very low in acceptability (palatability) and very low in nutrient quality for use in our beef cow diets. Our TMR’s (total mixed rations) will include ground switchgrass, corn silage and CDS. This fall the ratio of SG:CDS:CS is 1.67:1.47:1.0, on a dry matter basis. On a wet weight basis, a typical cow in the middle one-third of gestation receives 11.1 pounds of SG, 20.3 pounds of CDS, 10.0 pounds of CS and 0.4 pounds calcium carbonate in addition to 200 mg of Rumensin and 100 mg of Thiamine per day. This diet provides about 12% crude protein, which is higher than the minimum daily requirement of 9.5% to 10.0% recommended by the NRC. Currently, CDS is selling for $25:ton FOB, which is 1.25¢:16 weight basis. We value the SG equivalent to wheat straw at 4.0¢:lb. and our corn silage cost is based on 90 bu.:acre shelled corn at $8.00:bu. and 16 tons SC:ac (down from our usual yield of 24 tons:ac.) Therefore, the corn silage cost is equivalent to 2.25¢:lb. wet weight basis. Accordingly, this diet costs $1:day:cow. The hidden costs are trucking the CDS and grinding the SG. On a dry matter basis, this diet contains 35% CDS. Condensed Distillers Solubles (CDS) is the liquid syrup added to distillers grains to make distillers grains with solubles. Condensed Distillers Solubles is the most economical feed product produced by an ethanol plant and is a good buy anytime of the year. By using ground switchgrass and CDS, the ISU Farm will have enough corn silage to last until the 2013 corn silage harvest. Producers can use other innovative roughage sources such as wheat/oat straw, corn stalks, soybean stubble, low quality CRP hay, etc. to replace high quality hay and/or corn silage. Yes, the drought of 2012 is one for the record books. But, I was around for the drought of 1953 and 1956, and the one in the 1960s, the one in the 1970s and the drought of 1988. I don’t remember any of them very much. We’ll survive the drought of 2012 and the beef industry will prosper – if we keep the cup halffull. Diets for Dry Pregnant Mature Cows Feedstuff

Amy Sanders Hairston
SC: What is your background – were you raised on a farm or ranch? I was raised near Bryan, Texas. My family had cattle, and my brother and I showed cattle and hogs. I showed Charolais and Brahman heifers and crossbred steers. I was also involved in many other 4-H activities, including livestock judging, sewing, cooking, and record-book competitions. SC: Would you describe for us what you really do (sometimes job titles aren’t reflective of the actual work): I am a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor. This means I prosecute cases against employers who have violated federal labor laws. The cases involve a variety of issues, such as obtaining pay for employees who were not paid the proper wages and obtaining civil penalties from employers who failed to provide a safe workplace to employees. Much of my dayto-day work involves discovery, which is where parties exchange information prior to trial. I also regularly engage in settlement discussions, and I actually settle most of my cases prior to trial. SC: How did you get into this line of work? After working for several years in agricultural communications jobs (first, as a public relations specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and then as a writer for The Cattleman Magazine), I decided to go to law school. After law school, I worked at law firms, practicing labor and employment law. In 2003, I started working at the U.S. Department of Labor. SC: What do you like about your job? I enjoy working with my client representatives and with employers and employers’ attorneys to get a better understanding of each party’s position. Once I understand the parties’ positions, I enjoy working with them to try to reach a favorable resolution of the case. While it can be fun to go to trial, I get even more enjoyment out of negotiating good settlements prior to trial. I also enjoy writing, and much of my job involves writing legal analyses and documents to file in court. SC: What are the toughest challenges for what you do? In my job, we deal with a wide variety of issues, such as complicated occupational safety and health problems, wage and hour issues, employee benefit issues, mine safety and health issues, and class employment discrimination issues. Gaining a thorough understanding of these topics and staying on top of changes in the law is a challenge—but it’s part of what

makes my job interesting and fun. SC: Do you need a college degree in your profession? Yes, you need a college degree and a law degree. SC: Where should somebody go to get started in your line of work? I would start by talking to as many lawyers as possible to try to get a good understanding of what lawyers do. It would also be great to shadow a lawyer at his or her job for a day or two or, even better, to get a summer job working at a law office. There are also a lot of good books about law school and life as a lawyer, and it would be great to read some of them. Law school is a lot of work, and I recommend making every effort to learn about a career as a lawyer before taking the plunge and going to law school. SC: What is a typical day on the job like for you? Every day is different, which is one of the great things about my job. Most days, I work in the office, keeping up with my cases by discussing facts with the clients, engaging in written discovery, and discussing cases with opposing counsel. Sometimes I travel to participate in settlement meetings, meet with client representatives, prepare for trial, and participate in a trial. Our office covers cases out of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and New Mexico, so I frequently travel to attend meetings, trials, and other events. SC: What would most surprise a student about your career? My job is nothing like “Law and Order” or other television shows about lawyers. In fact, most lawyers’ jobs are nothing like what you see on TV. Much of a civil lawyer’s job involves reviewing and exchanging documents and preparing documents to file in court or send to a client. SC: Anything you wish someone would have told you when you were in school? I’ve learned that personality types are important to job satisfaction and that certain jobs are a better fit for certain personalities than others. For example, an introverted person who is very creative might love a job as a writer, and an extroverted person may prefer a job in sales. I’ve recently read some great books on this topic—I just wish I had read them while I was in school and making decisions about what type of career to pursue. Fortunately, there are so many different types of lawyer jobs that there is a good fit for almost every type of personality.

Sullivan’s
DUALLY ™
Hair Shedding Comb Now, truly a hair shedding comb designed for all show cattle hair coats ... thick or thin! Removing dead hair has never been so simple and effective, EVER ... Saves Days! The extra-large 5” wide head covers 25% more area with each stroke than any previous shedding comb. This double-sided hair shedding comb features rounded stainless steel teeth with extra-wide spacing on one side that gently penetrate deep into the thickest, “wooly” hair coats removing old dead hair, yet leaving the healthy hair unharmed. Flip the comb over to the other side with narrow spaced teeth to remove dead hair from medium coats. Always remember ... the faster the dead hair is shed out, the faster new healthy hair will grow.
Patent pending.
The #1 daily hair care brush just got a big brother! the SMART SENSATION XL ™ In June, the SMART SENSATION became the craze of the show cattle world. To complement the Original, we are pleased to introduce the XL. The XL is a wider version with 10 rows containing 199 uniquely placed ball-tipped teeth. These extra rows containing a total of 54% more teeth creates more gentle, stimulating contact to the skin and hair with each stroke to stimulate the natural oils from the skin to coat the hair and promote healthy hair growth. The XL creates increased hair separation of the hide to amplify hair volume. Sensations are available in two sizes: Original 7 row and now the NEW 10 row XL.
Patent pending.

Get more hair perfection with Sullivan’s new Teflon Combs. Teflon is a solid polymer that is considered to be one of the world’s most slippery and water resistant substances. It has one of the lowest measured coefficients of friction of any compound. For our application, it creates a baked-on surface to the comb teeth for reduced friction and a non-stick lubricant that allows the comb to glide through the hair easier, especially with a sticky substance like adhesives. Although not full-proof, especially since adhesive is still a very sticky substance, you will however be glad to see a 40 to 50% improvement of less matting, less hair drag, less static and less stick to the comb when fitting a leg. It is definitely easier to clean adhesives from the comb and saves time while fitting. Another industry first from Sullivan’s ... the Innovative Leader! Available as Sullivan Combs, Fluffer Combs, and Double-Stuff Comb.
Sullivan’s
Staggered Bristle Roto Brush™ The New Staggered Bristle Roto Brush has rows with staggered lengths of bristles, one row with long, the next row being 1/4” shorter. The short-cut rows allow the long bristles to work deeper into the hair. This creates more lift and volume to the hair, prevents the matted look and invigorates gentle stimulation to the hair base for new hair growth and faster hair training. The short rows are cut to a length 1/4” shorter. Lock nut keeps the brush securely tight and free from spinning loose. Flat side of bolt allows it to lock tight in the drill and keep from spinning loose. A common problem with other roto brushes. Lime green color allows for easy visual while working with all hair colors. The soft, gentle grade of synthetic bristles prevents the brush from being too harsh as compared to stiffer roto brushes that can scratch and irritate the hide.

Due to time restrictions with American Royal date changes, family obligations, and NAILE all running together we are going to postpone the November 3rd Online sale to November 21st. We feel that due to the dry weather conditions this summer, this will give the cattle an extra couple weeks to catch up and look better for your inspection also. We have always had the thinking and will stand behind that ‘the later the better’ on buying your next project because it takes the guess work off the finish line. Anddddddd ... as record shows by the over 20 state Grand and Reserve Grand Champions this year alone that waiting will pay off. Odds prove for many years that we was, are, and will be there at the end when it counts and getting a banner. So be patient and prepare for pictures and video to come out that week before on one of the best sets of cattle we have EVER assembled.
