The Sullivan’s wish you a Happy Holiday Season and a Blessed 2016!
DAN SULLIVAN 2576 Old Brandon rd • Hillsboro, TX 76645 (254) 582-7096 • (254) 582-0814 online at: sullivanranch.net
The holidays are a time to look back and reflect. It’s not about buckles, banners and winning, but who we really are. Being a father is one of the single greatest gifts a man can ever receive. I thank God daily. He blessed me with an amazing son like Daniel and two beautiful daughters, Kaitlyn and Grace! It’s such a privilege to be able to raise and mold such awesome blessings from God. The past three years my life has forever changed, the support has been nothing but overwhelming! I want to thank my family and friends for being by side and helping me be the best dad I can be.

PROFESSOR TO PRODUCER
Rules should be Practical
M
By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus
y article for this issue was going to pertain to preconditioning calves. I thought that was a timely subject given that it is early fall. However, I have chosen to provide my perspective on an issue that affects a subject right there next to God, family and friends – showing livestock.
This year at some state fairs, the champion market animal in different livestock species has tested positive for one or more pharmaceuticals. At some show, this results in negative consequences for the exhibitor and can include one or more of the following: forfeiture of prizes won, barring participation in future shows, the stigma of being a crook, etc. As a trained animal scientist with two degrees in animal husbandry and one degree in ruminant nutrition; as a member of a State Fair Board of Directors, and a member of a Beef Expo Committee; as a father of two daughters who grew up in 4-H and as an individual who loves the show ring for all that is good and all that is not so good, please consider my comments to have some merit.
First, the purpose of testing market animals at a show is for two primary reasons. 1. One, testing is to ensure food safety of meat from animals receiving pharmaceuticals approved for use in livestock by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This test can be either a qualitative test or a quantitative test. Under a qualitative test any animal that tests positive, regardless of the concentration of the pharmaceutical (it is present at any level, no matter how small) is in violation. Under a quantitative test, the FDA approved pharmaceutical may be present but the concentration or residue is below a set maximum allowable tolerance (MAT) – the concentration of the pharmaceutical is so small as to not result in a food hazard. The MAT can vary depending on which pharmaceutical is of concern and for some pharmaceuticals the MAT may be zero or
very close to zero. The concern regarding these pharmaceuticals is that some people are allergic to a given pharmaceutical and consuming even a small concentration of the pharmaceutical can cause severe allergic reaction (sometimes death). 2. Two, testing is to prevent the use of unapproved FDA drugs or substances considered adulterants that may or may not impair food safety, and in which their use and presence could give an animal a competitive advantage. Whether qualitative or quantitative, these tests are expensive to conduct. Consequently, at state fairs only the animals that sell in a state fair sanctioned sale are tested (usually only the grand champions and sometimes the breed champions). Sometimes animals in a show are randomly selected for testing, but generally the testing is limited to a small number of animals.
106 November/December 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
Second, an important component of showing is to teach children the art and science of animal husbandry that includes how and when to treat sick animals and the consequence of pharmaceuticals, residues, withdrawal times and treatment relative to harvest (slaughter) date. There are three realities of life for those that show. One, no matter how good the animal care, if you show, some animals are going to get sick (usually it will be a respiratory illness). Common veterinarian treatment for respiratory illness is an antibiotic of choice and Banamine. Two, most county fairs and national junior shows occur before the state fair so often times show animals have an illness episode prior to the state fair. Three, the state fair show for any particular species occurs on a set date each year for which the exhibitor has no control. Accordingly, to be fair to all exhibitors a qualitative test is not
a reasonable test for FDA approved pharmaceuticals. Only quantitative tests are practical for the purpose of ensuring food safety of meat animals. In my opinion, show animals sold for meat consumption should be subject to a quantitative test for FDA approved pharmaceuticals and if a residue occurs below the MAT they can be harvested. If the animal has a pharmaceutical concentration above the MAT, harvest date should be postponed until the pharmaceutical threshold level is below the MAT. For champions in a state fair sale, there is nothing magic about harvesting the animals on the “first Tuesday following the sale.” Just hold the positive champions at the owner’s expense until the animal tests below the MAT. In commercial production that is standard operating procedure. That is, withhold a treated animal form harvest for
the required number of days. Then, test the animal using either a serum or urine test prior to harvest and there is no predetermination date on which the animal must be harvested. The animal is harvested following a negative test. The situation is different, however, for animals entered in a terminal show or carcass contest. Because carcass analysis on a predetermined date is a requirement, all animals must be free (below the MAT) from all pharmaceuticals of concern. Regarding show animals that test positive (a qualitative test) for FDA unapproved drugs, there can be (maybe should be) consequences for the exhibitor. However, a positive qualitative test for an unapproved FDA drug should be followed by a quantitative test. My rationale is that today’s testing procedures are so sensitive (ppt) that sometimes (depending on the
adulterant) animals can incidentally come into contact with an adulterant and test positive in a qualitative test but in a quantitative test the concentration may be so low as to be insignificant from a practical perspective. One thing we do not want is for pharmaceutical testing to indirectly teach our children not to treat sick animals with the best pharmaceutical available because they may test out at the state fair. Testing is necessary to ensure food safety and fair competition; but many of our exhibition regulations are antiquated and should be rewritten to be consistent with today’s technology.

aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.

Someone once said, “The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves.” By: Blaine Wildy, AJCA Area 6 Vice President Can you imagine what kind of feeling it would be to know that you just were elected to be a State FFA Officer? AJCA member, Will Clark, can tell you all about it! Out of about 14,000 members, there are only six FFA State Officers. These six officers will do great things throughout the year in their leadership role. The officers will conduct workshops, give multiple speeches, conduct three Greenhand Conferences, and serve as delegates at the 88th Annual FFA National Convention. Will is a college freshman at the University of Arkansas. This past summer he was elected to be the 2015-16 Arkansas FFA State Secretary. Will says the way he went about the process took a while, but it was well worth it. “During convention we had to go through a nominating committee process. That consisted of a knowledge exam, facilitating leadership development workshops, storytelling, a stand and deliver speech, and multiple rounds of interviews. All of that took place during convention. However, in my case, I went through a couple months of preparation. I felt that in order to fully succeed in the nominating committee process, I would need to do that. We had a 24-hour period to campaign. That time was used to build relationships with FFA members at convention. Once election night was

upon us, I had to give a two minute campaign speech.” One thing that Will said was super special about election night was that he got to wear his father’s FFA Jacket from 1988. Will gives all the credit to his success to his father, Cleve Clark. Without his father ever introducing him to FFA, Will said he wouldn’t be where he is today. This summer, Will and the rest of the State Officers lead three weeks of the Arkansas Leadership Conference. Will also had the chance to go to Washington D.C. with our State FFA President, Sam Harris. The two attended the States Presidents Conference. Will’s leadership roles do not stop at FFA. He also has served on the AJCA board of directors for a few years. AJCA is proud of Will and all of his accomplishments.

Calf Scours: A Loose Discussion By: Dr. Clint Shireman, Dr. Aaron Slater and Dr. Gary Warner
As we reflect on the past issues, topics of delivering a live calf and assuring adequate colostral intake, we feel it is important to continue this trend and discuss a topic that all cattle producers are faced with throughout their career – calf scours. Calf scours are usually seen within the first 28 days of life and being able to properly identify and treat this condition is an asset that will reduce the chances of a decreased bottom line. In this issue, we will discuss common causes, prevention, and treatment of neonatal scours.
142 November/December 2015 • theshowcircuit.com
Causes of Scours When diagnosing a case of scours, the source breaks down into two categories: noninfectious or infectious, or a combination of the two. Noninfectious causes are usually a result of poor management more specifically, inadequate nutrition of the cow and poor calving environment. During the last trimester, proper nutrition is critical to ensure that the cow is receiving adequate protein and energy to produce an ample supply and quality of colostrum for that calf. As we focus on the calving environment, it is important to avoid overcrowding in the calving area and keeping that area as clean and dry as possible. This is an extremely important concept to practice, especially during the winter months when low temperatures and wet conditions can add additional stress to calves. Continued calving on the same bedding or general area can lead to a calf becoming wet and hypothermic predisposing the calf to becoming less vigorous and result in the calf not nursing properly. Infectious agents that cause neonatal diarrhea are broken down into three groups: bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Common causes of each group can be seen in the chart provided.
“Continued calving on the same bedding or general area can lead to a calf becoming wet and hypothermic predisposing the calf to becoming less vigorous and result in the calf not nursing properly.”
Calves that are still able to stand and are willing to nurse can be supplemented with milk or oral electrolytes that are formulated with adequate sodium, glucose, potassium and bicarbonate that will act as an alkalinizing agent. Providing adequate milk, either natural or a quality milk replacer, is ideal for providing extra energy for the calf as well as to improve gut healing. Antibiotic therapy may be implemented if an infectious component is diagnosed.
In severe cases, if calves are weak and unable to stand, the use of intravenous (IV) fluids is required. Calves in Escherichia coli (E.coli) Rotavirus Cyptosporidium need of fluid therapy are over 8% dehydrated and may need veterinary intervention to ensure that the proper Salmonella Coronavirus Coccidia amount of fluids are being administered safely and efClostridium perfringens Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) ficiently. As a producer, being able to properly identify a dehydrated calf is an invaluable management tool. Easily It is important to note that it is difficult to make a diagnosis based identified signs of dehydration include sunken in eyes, a slow return of on the clinical signs. These agents can be broken down into a timeline skin to normal position and dry and tacky mouth. to help lead to a more specific diagnosis based on the calf’s age. Veterinarians may utilize fecal samples from untreated calves to identify common pathogens. It is important to note that these infectious causes Prevention can also cause diarrhea in humans. When handling animals, be diligent As stated, prevention is the most important factor. As we return when practicing good hygiene techniques in and out of the barn. to the focus of last month’s article, providing good, quality colostrum within the first six hours of life is essential for optimum absorption. With that being said, providing good quality colostrum early in life is the single most important requirement. In order for colostral immunity to be effective, dams should be provided with good nutrition during the last trimester. Cows should also be vaccinated before calving to increase the amount of antibodies to E.coli, Rotavirus and Coronavirus in the colostrum. Older cows have a stronger immune system than heifers, meaning the older cows provide a higher quality colostrum. Calves should be vaccinated with an oral Rotavirus and Coronavirus vaccine and an E. coli antibody as an added precaution before colostrum is given. Bacteria
Virus
Protozoa
Treatment In general, prevention is the key to treatment; however, some cases may rely on increased efforts that are essential to calf survival. The use of fluid and electrolyte therapy is crucial regardless of the animal’s hydration status. A scouring calf is losing a large amount of fluid during these scour episodes, so it is important to rehydrate the calf using commercially available products that can replace the fluids and electrolytes lost.
Most cases of scours are seen during changes in the weather. Although we cannot control the weather, we can control the environment in which that calf is raised. Providing a clean, dry place with good sanitation is ideal. Changing bedding regularly and when different groups of cows and calves are moved in and out of the calving area is a vital management practice. In conclusion, practicing good management techniques is the key to scour prevention within the herd and to ensure that calves are at the level of highest performance. It is imperative to be able to identify the signs of scours as well as the signs of dehydration. By working closely with your veterinarian to establish vaccination and treatment protocols, the presence and severity of calf scours can be minimized greatly.

Leadership Lessons
Management & Leadership Not one in the same By Kindra Gordon
Manager and leader are two words often used interchangeably, and while leadership and management are both important to business success, they are not the same thing, emphasizes Rick LaPlante. “People think they are the same, but they are fundamentally different,” LaPlante says. He describes management as “dealing with current complexities.” For example, he points out, beef producers “manage” grazing, herd health and breeding strategies for their operations. Conversely, “Leadership is about change — creating the environment for change,” LaPlante says. LaPlante further explains that management is about predictability, reliability, control and efficiency in managing systems. He notes that managers want repeatable production outcomes –cows bred at roughly the same time each year; and weaned calves to perform and weigh at minimum what they did the year before; managers don’t like different. He identifies leadership as “creating a reality that wouldn’t likely exist without intervention.” As a popular speaker on the topic of leadership, LaPlante has had firsthand experience – he had a successful 19-year career with Microsoft and guided development and differentiation between management and leadership roles. Today, LaPlante runs his own cattle company near Powell, Wyoming, with his wife and family. He says, “Leadership is a totally different set of skills than management.” And he adds, “We don’t teach it [leadership], in high school or college, and we should.” He also notes that ranchers often take the time to transfer or teach management skills like riding, roping, and other traditions. But he says, “We don’t spend a lot of time passing on leadership – and we should.” Leadership Is… LaPlante says at the core of leadership is understanding that it is about people – as opposed to systems and processes. He offers this analogy: management relates to the way you AI or graze, which LaPlante points out deals with policies and procedures. He says, “People are involved in the system; you give management plans to people to do, but it’s not about the people.” Leadership, he explains, is about thinking of the future and creating the scaffolding or structure for people to make innovative choices and do things differently. “Leadership is all about change, messiness, risk, movement and
creating desire. It is always 100% about people.” He adds, “Leadership is about trying something even if you don’t know the outcome – which is why leadership and management are often at odds.” In a nutshell, LaPlante says, “Leadership is about intentionality – figuring out where you are headed.” LaPlante notes that leadership is an acquired skill. He also believes leadership can – and should – be developed and exist at all levels within an organization. LaPlante says, “Anyone can have a compelling vision of the future, not just one guy at the top. It’s important to get everybody in the game.” Most importantly, LaPlante says is that leaders must motivate, inspire, and influence thinking, creativity, and engagement. And he says the most important part of helping foster leadership among employees is that you can’t push them down when they share an idea. Otherwise, he says, it becomes like a game of Whack-A-Mole and pretty soon people won’t pop their head up to share ideas. Ready To Change LaPlante notes that in the farm and ranch business, owners often convince themselves that their businesses are not like other Fortune 500 companies, but he says the reality is farms and ranches do face the same issues other businesses do. And he shares this: If you sell 500 head of calves annually, you are in the top 30% of businesses in the U.S. by revenue. Thus, he poses the question: “Are you running your business like the top 30% in the U.S.?” He adds, “We cannot have world class corporations without exceptional management. But, we cannot have even better or different world class businesses if we don’t have [and implement] leadership.” To move forward, LaPlante advises individuals to inventory the challenges that face their business, and then: 1) Decide if those challenges require management or leadership. 2) Determine who is the right person to provide the leadership. 3) Decide if that individual has the necessary leadership skills or how that person can get those skills. 4)Schedule time to provide the leadership to others on the team.
