“It is imperative at Horn Livestock to create and deliver healthy newborn calves with the growing demand we have for show steers and bulls. The expectation of our customer is higher than ever. So for the past five years, we start with Calf ’s Choice Total to provide consistently high rates of successful passive transfer. We feel that if we can get a full replacer dose in them, our calves will have improved immunity against enteric and respiratory challenges to maximize that genetic potential.” Brandon Horn, Horn Livestock, Anson, Texas For more information contact SCCL: www.sccl.com
BOVINE IGG CALF’S CHOICE TOTAL®
NATURAL BOVINE COLOSTRUM Each minute, a calf’s ability to absorb immunity plunges and more fat stores are burned. Don’t rely on mother nature to guarantee the health of your calves and the future of your herd. Calf’s Choice Total HiCal is a true bovine colostrum. Nothing added. Nothing removed. It is colostrum. HiCal is high in immunity for maximum immune protection and contains full colostral fat for energy needed to survive. It is convenient as a supplement or as a replacer and mixes completely in seconds. 1-866-242-3185

aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success
AJCA
The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.
The Meaning of the Buckle By Makenzie Chambliss, AJCA Area 7 Vice President The Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Association held its Super Saturday Event on August 4th, in conjunction with the annual Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association Convention and Trade Show. The event kicked off with the recognition of our scholarship winners. AJCA gave a total of $14,600 in scholarships this year. During the event, more than 50 awards were given, and 68 buckles were awarded to members for top overall points for the breed of cattle they showed throughout the year. Most people see the buckle as a symbol of winning, but for AJCA members it is so much more. These buckles represent the time and dedication they have invested into their livestock projects.
It shows that all the responsibility, hard work, getting up early, going to bed late, and traveling to all corners of our state, has paid off in the end. It is not only for the wins, but for the times that the judge selected another animal to receive the purple banner. Each AJCA member experiences both wins and losses but still has the courage to get up and do it all over again, no matter what. Being an AJCA member is more than the buckle. It is the drive and determination to want to make our breeds better, to educate people about cattle, to make long lasting friendships, to have awesome role models, and to be a role model for others. I would like to personally congratulate all the members who received buckles this year and
thank them for competing in our shows. I would also like to encourage all AJCA members to start getting ready for our next show season and to keep working towards your goals! Thanksgiving Classic is just around the corner. Authors Makenzie Chambliss (left) & Kacie Bragg (right)

Josie was honored with the Jason Bertschy Memorial High Point Overall Exhibitor Award. This award is presented annually to an AJCA member who has accumulated the most total points for all breed divisions, as well as showmanship. The award includes the use of an aluminum stock trailer for one year and a memorial plaque in the ACA State office with the member’s name on it. Josie won the following awards this year, as well: Chi Overall Heifer, Exotic Commercial Overall Heifer, Overall Junior Showmanship, Overall High Point Registered Breeds Exhibitor, Reserve High Point Commercial Breeds Heifer, Overall Supreme Heifer, and Angus Reserve Overall Heifer. This summer Josie also won a National Sweepstakes award at the Maine Jr. Nationals show. Congratulations, Josie, on a job well done! Thank
you for all of your hard work and dedication to the Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Assoc. If you would like to learn more about Josie and her family, you can follower her personal blog “The Wilkins Sisters” on Facebook.

Wes Underwood is a graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, with an M.S. in Agriculture Education, and he is currently the Photography Coordinator and instructor in photography at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. Underwood’s love for the outdoors and agriculture comes through very clearly in the type of photography that he does. An avid outdoorsman, he finds no greater pleasure then to be on a site to shoot as the sun breaks in the morning or sets in the evening. He has been published in many national magazines, including The Cattleman, Saddelbaron, The Agriculturist, and others. Underwood’s use of natural light to enhance photography is a trademark of his imagery. Underwood was featured on Texas Country Reporter for his work photographing Lost and Forgotten cemeteries across the Southwest. So far, he has shot over 15,000 images on the subject and adds to it constantly. For information on photography workshops with Wes, see his website at www.wuphoto.com.

Smartphone Photography By Wes Underwood
H
auling that big camera to the show ring is becoming a thing of the past. With today’s new technology in smartphones, we don’t have to tote those Nikons and Canons around all the time. The photo quality of the iPhone and Android phones has grown leaps and bounds the last few years, and now all we have to do is figure out how to use that technology that we carry in our hands every day. Your smartphone can do everything that a bigger camera can do, except shoot in the full manual mode that allows you to have complete control of the camera. With a few helpful tips, I hope to give you some insight on some of the things you can do with your smart phone. The first thing you need to do is be sure the lens on your phone is clean. If it has a smudge on the lens, this will make the photos look soft focus and can break up the light as it comes into the camera. You need to check the lens on the back of your phone, as well as the one on the front to get that perfect selfie. Use a soft cloth to clean the lens area. If you see scratches, it can cause you problems with the way light is captured in the camera, and dust from the show ring can be super abrasive to your lenses. To get the most out of your smartphone, get
to know the camera functions and what you can do with them. Learn the focus points, exposure settings, and how and where to turn on the flash. Each brand of phone is a little different, but the symbols used to make adjustments are pretty standard. For example, anytime you see an icon that looks like the setting sun, this indicates you would need to adjust your exposure to either allow more light in or take away light if the image is too bright. Another common icon looks like a lightning bolt. This symbol is for your flash. While the flash is not super powerful, it can and will help add exposure and fill in shadows. Flash also helps stop motion. You are using what we call “direct flash” when using the camera flash. It can get harsh, but it can also be the saving grace of being able to get an image in a dark show barn. Although your phone camera does have a zoom effect, the best zoom is your feet! If you can move closer to your subject and allow the camera to shoot at a wider lens opening, the camera will need less light to make a proper exposure. The zoom function on smartphones is not very good, and you will lose image quality the more you zoom in on a subject. So, if you can move in closer, remember: “the name of the game is to fill the frame.” What I mean is, the tighter you shoot an image, the better you will like that image and the better it will view on any media platform.

Since a cell phone does not have a shutter control, that can be adjusted. You should always be aware of motion – whether that motion is in front of the camera or behind the camer. It can affect the quality of your images. You need to hold that camera as steadily as possible in lower light settings, as the shutter slows way down to allow more light into the camera for an exposure. You can help this by using a tripod or simply bracing on a fence panel or post around the show ring or barn. The steadier you can keep the camera, the sharper your images will turn out. Other basic things to keep in mind while taking any kind of photograph: how the light is hitting your subject if you are in a natural setting and the composition you need on that image. Good composition can make a so-so image a great image really fast. Look past the photo to the background. Keep clutter out of that background as much as possible. If you are photographing younger kids or livestock, get on their level. Don’t take photos of the top of their heads when you could be taking photos of those pretty eyes looking back at you. Look around and be inspired! Something you see every day around the barn can change in an instant if you look at it from a different angle or with a different light hitting the subject. Think about where you need to be, in or around that show ring, barn, or pasture, to get the best image
101
you can capture. Look at others’ images and pick out the things you like. While I will never tell anyone to copy work of others, I will always encourage you to look at what you can do better at your location with your kids or your livestock. Finally, when sending or saving files, your smart phone will give you an option of file sizes. Always save your images as large as you possibly can. You can always edit and go down in size, but you can never go up in size. Even when uploading to social media sites like Facebook or Instagram, upload a large image, and the social media site will compress and size that image to fit their platform. If you fill your phone up with images, consider something like iCloud to store your images, or download them and save them on your computer or external backup device. Backing up your images off the phone is the only way to ensure they are safe for future use. If you send an image to media sites (like The Show Circuit, your local paper, etc.), they want high-quality prints. Always remember, the larger the file size you can save and send, the better the quality of your images will be at output or printing of that image. Email the largest file size you can for others to use in publications to ensure the best quality reproduction of your images. It might take a few
seconds longer in the file transfer, but the quality gained is well worth the few seconds difference. If the image is too big to email, file sharing services like Dropbox will send the user a link to the large file they can download. Most of all, have fun! Capture those memories the best you can and never be afraid to experiment with your smartphone. It can do a lot for you, and the quality just keeps getting better. And remember: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
Top Right: Shows center focus. The square box is center focused on the subject, and the exposure slider on the right is in the center. It can go up to brighten and down to darken. Center Right: The same image shot the same way, just moved in closer to the subject with the camera. Bottom Right: Shown at the top of the frame is the flash icon, turned on and ready to fire. You can see the focus box has moved to a lower corner of the subject.

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting
PROFESSIONAL ETHICS................... As you read this article, the summer show season has come and gone. I hope you won some and had a lot of fun. I want to boast a little as a proud father. My daughter, Leslie, received the American Junior Simmental Association Gold Merit Award (1 of 5 awarded) at this year’s National Classic for her ”leadership, scholarship, extracurricular participation and direct involvement within the beef industry” (AJSA words, not mine). That recognition topped an already great summer show season. I have been judging livestock shows (primarily beef cattle) since 1972. During those five decades, I have seen a lot of good things and a few bad things happen in the show ring. The last few years, the most disturbing observation has been a growing violation of professional ethics by some of our young judges. There is an unwritten code of ethics that most people follow when judging livestock shows. I am most certain that judging coaches across the country either directly teach or informally discuss these values with their students. I know my coaches (Don Birk and Glen Richardson) did. The purpose of this narrative is to emphasize these values and to put these rules in writing for all judges to review and refresh their memory from time to time.
Rule 1: Guarantee Availability. Do
not accept a judging assignment without checking your availability and ability to arrive at the show on time. If compensation for your service is important, agree to an amount before accepting the assignment.
Rule 2:
Avoid Conflict of Interest. Do not accept judging assignments if owners of cattle in which you have a partnership interest want to show those cattle in the show you will be judging. Do not accept a judging assignment for a show in which someone for whom you work (either directly
or as a consultant) is showing. Do not accept a judging assignment if livestock you have sold or if cattle for which you have previously had an association will be in the show. Exception – of course this rule excludes personal friendships, co-owners of livestock for livestock not in the show and previous employers. Everyone knows someone and any knowledgeable judge will know one or more exhibitors – that is expected.
Rule 3:
Arrive on Time. A good rule of thumb is to arrive at the show and check in with the superintendent about 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the show. Avoid livestock stalls at all times (both before and after the show). Prior to the show avoid visiting with exhibitors (other than a friendly greeting, if the situation arises). If you arrive at the show early, spend your time away from the stalls of the livestock or particular breed you will be judging.
Rule 4: Leave Promptly. Following
the show and pictures of champions, leave the show. DO NOT GO TO THE LIVESTOCK STALLS and visit. Certainly cordial conversation in the show ring with exhibitors following the show is acceptable. This rule does have an important exception, the responsibility for which falls on the judge. Many times at our large, national multi-breed shows (such as NAILE, American Royal, etc.) one will be asked to judge a breed other than the breed he/she is showing. It may be acceptable to judge in such a situation if the breeds are stalled in separate sections by breed with two caveats; you obtain approval when the show offers the invitation, and you avoid the stalling area where the breed you are judging is housed. If different breed stalling areas are intermixed, do not accept the assignment or only attend the show on show day. Someone else should care for your cattle.
178 September/October 2018 • theshowcircuit.com
Rule 5:
Multi-Day Shows. Often, judges are asked to judge one or more breeds over a two- or three-day span. When judging one breed over a two-day span NEVER VISIT THE STALLING AREA. Following judging on Day 1, leave the show and return the next day, 30 minutes prior to start of the show. If judging multiple breeds over a two-to three-day period, it is acceptable, following Day 1 judging, to watch other breeds or species show -- as long as you do not socialize with exhibitors of a breed you will judge. The downtime between shows can be boring, but you must be vigilant to avoid visiting with exhibitors of a breed you will be judging. Perception is everything, and the judge must appear unbiased and objective in his/her evaluation.
Rule 6: Attire. Always dress appropri-
ately. National shows and winter shows (unless the show ring is really cold) require a sport coat/tie (professional dress). Summer shows require a tie at minimum. A hat or English cap can be worn at the judge’s discretion – never wear a ball cap. Jeans may be suitable for county fairs but trousers/slacks are best for state and national shows. I am not one to get bogged down about one’s attire, but a professional look is always best.
Rule 7:
Reasons. This is where our young judges shine. Many have learned the art of giving descriptive and comparative terminology very well. One word of caution, just be sure the reasons fit the animal(s). I enjoy listening to judges who say little but whose terms accurately describe the livestock. Less can be more, especially if the words are accurate. Nothing taints a show like flowery, descriptive terms that are not accurate. In junior shows, when feasible, try to speak positively about each animal in the ring (it is not always possible to address each animal in large shows).
....for the judge Rule 8: PMA. Always present a Positive
Mental Attitude. Be upbeat. Act like you are having a great time. If the judge is upbeat and positive, the exhibitors will be upbeat, and suddenly you will have a great show. Exhibitors will think the judge did a great job and are more likely to go home with a positive memory, if the judge seemed enthusiastic and had good things to say about the livestock and the people. It’s important that judges maintain integrity. Perception can be reality. If exhibitors and observers perceive honesty in animal evaluation and professional conduct in our judges, the show ring and all that is good about it will continue for a long time.

The I’m In It 2 Win It Series is the Premier Texas-based junior show series open to any junior exhibitor throughout the USA. This series was created to recognize the efforts of junior livestock exhibitors and reward them for their accomplishments. It is our goal to create new opportunities in livestock showing for these exhibitors so they can set and attain new goals, learn new animal husbandry and skills, and also have more avenues to show their beef projects. The I’m In It 2 Win It Series consists of several cattle shows throughout the year, beginning in April 2018 and ending December 2018 with a Year-end Banquet to honor the exhibitors for their accomplishments. It is by purpose, a competitive program that promotes the advancement of the show industry, providing consistency and continuity to a Show Series tools to increase exhibitor knowledge, education, and opportunities for personal development in Youth Exhibitors.

Maddie Fugate Species and breeds of livestock you show? Pigs and cattle (mainly Angus) What is your favorite show and why? I will always have a soft spot for NAILE. It is where I first started showing. Over the years we have transitioned from the pig barn to the cattle barn, but there is still nothing like showing on the green shavings. What is your favorite show memory & why? Being able to be 3rd Overall gilt in 2017 at World Pork Expo and National Summer Spectacular. Ever since I started showing I always wanted to crack the top five overall with a gilt, especially at NJSS. Not only was I able to accomplish that goal, but I was able to do so with the best people by my side. The gilt that I showed was a Hampshire from Fecke Livestock. We met the Fecke family during some of our first years of showing. Over the years our families have traveled the country going to NJSA events. What made that accomplishment so special to my family was being able to do so with some of our dearest friends who we have the upmost respect for. Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal. It is almost hard to pick an all-time favorite, but there is one that sticks out above the rest. Her name is Precious, and she was my Landrace gilt that I showed in 2016. From the very beginning she was special to me. Her littermate, Faith, was always the one that did better up until NJSS - so much so that my mom tried to get rid of Precious several times. But I wouldn’t let her. It was a tense summer with those two gilts, but Precious was my baby. It’s funny because to me she is a
total sweetheart, but to anyone else, she is really mean and bitey. Whenever my mom helped me walk pigs that summer, Precious would follow her around the yard and nip at her. I don’t think that any pig after her will ever compare to the emotional bond I have with her. She certainly is precious to me. Do you have anything you keep in your show box for good luck or any good luck rituals on show day? My mom is very superstitious, so we can never cross the path of a black cat. Once we were at State Fair, and one darted out in front of the truck. She backed all the way out the gate and went in a different way, because it was show day. Also, I wear the exact same thing every time to show gilts. I always wear a purple shirt, because I like to dress for what I want. In this case it is a purple banner. We also have a princess towel in our show box that we have had since my very first show 17 years ago. Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity? Easy, cleaning pens. What do you like to do outside of the barn/show ring? I love to read! Part of that comes from being in a car a lot, with not much to do. Past that, I also enjoy public speaking and livestock judging. Favorite book or author: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. For many it is not an easy book to read because of some of the gory scenes, but I love that it brings to light a rampant issue at the time. Even though its intended mark was not to change the meat packing industry, it did. I think the book lead us down the path we are on today

when it comes to meat safety and packing/processing procedures. Favorite food? Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake What are your college or career goals? Currently, I attend Lake Land College, where I am on the Livestock Judging Team. After Lake Land, I plan on attending a four-year university where I will finish out my Livestock Judging career while majoring in Animal Science and Ag Economics with a focus on policy. Past that, I would like to either pursue my masters or law degree. Upon completion of college, I want to be Lobbyist who helps influence agricultural policy. I want to be able to provide a voice to farmers. Eventually, I would like to own my own business helping people overcome their fear of public speaking. Do you have a quote or motto you like to follow? “If the plan doesn’t work, change the plan, not the goal.” Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring? It is all the people along the way who offered words of encouragement or even constructive criticism that influence who I am. But, of those there are two who stand above the rest: my Mom and Dad. They have believed in me since day one. Never once, have they ever tried to stifle who I am. They gave me the wings (or wheels) need to go forth and pursue my greatest passions. It is they who taught me to never give up, and if you can dream you can do it. I truly cannot thank them enough for all they have sacrificed in order for me to live as if I’m dreaming with my eyes wide open.
Species and breeds of livestock you show? Market Lambs and commercial ewes.
When I was younger I showed mainly dorsets and speckles. As I have gotten older, my breeds have changed to showing crossbreads, hampinfluenced sheep, and natural colors.
What is your favorite show and why?
My favorite show is the Arizona National in Phoenix, Arizona. It’s my favorite, because I love the atmosphere of the show, along with the weather.
What is your favorite show memory & why? My favorite show memory is when I won
the Illinois State Fair in 2015. It was my first ever big win, and the feelings I had after it where just different than anything else.
Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal. My all time favorite show animal was a
crossbred wether I had last year. His name was Jamaica. There was a different side to him than I’ve ever felt with any other animal, and it just made us really connect. Along with the fact that his personality couldn’t be passed up. He is now a
permanent member at Titus Club Lambs.
Favorite movie? My favorite movie is John

your show shirt before the grand drive, no matter how dirty it is. There is little luck to winning. It is more about the hard work and dedication that is invested at home.
I hope to one day attend Texas Tech University and judge livestock. GUNS UP!

washing. I mean who wants their feet to be wet when they have to show?
What do you like to do outside of the barn/show ring? Showing livestock is pretty
much my life. It’s what I do most days all day, so there isn’t much time for anything else. I am also highly involved in United FFA and Alexis All-Stars 4-H Club.
Favorite book or author? I’m not really a big book reader unless I am forced to at school. But I do enjoy looking at livestock sale catalogs.

I would first like to thank my mom and dad for everything they do. Thank you to Neff Livestock for always putting good ones in my hands. After them it takes a village to get it done. This past summer our intern, Gabe Barrett, was an asset to our show season. Thank you to the Allen, Kennedy, Middlesworth, and Newcomb families for always making sure we do our best.

VALUE OF GAIN
Offers Stocker Opportunity By Wes Ishmael
Although calf prices will likely continue to decline seasonally, they remain at a higher level than many expected when the year began. Plus, value of gain continues to offer opportunity for adding more weight to calves before selling. First, the price trend, which is under pressure from both seasonality and the cattle cycle. “Looking at the rest of 2018, feeder prices are expected to be a little lower than during the same period of 2017,” says Josh Maples, Extension Livestock Economist at Mississippi State Univer-

sity, in a recent issue of In the Cattle Markets. “We typically see seasonal feeder price declines heading into September and October, and the large supplies of calves this year provide some reasoning for that seasonal pattern to hold this year. Looking beyond 2018, the slower herd growth numbers begin to paint a brighter price picture for 2019 and 2020. If the strong domestic economy maintains or grows and exports continue to gain steam, it is not difficult to project higher prices in the fall of 2019 compared to fall 2018.” As for seasonality, Derrell Peel, Ex-
tension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, explained in recent market comments: “Prices for feeder cattle typically decline seasonally for all weight classes after August. Calves and stockers up to 600 lbs. (which peak in March) typically have a seasonal low price in October, while heavier feeder cattle decline from an August peak lower through the end of the year. On average, feeder cattle prices decline 4% to 5% from August to lows in the fourth quarter.” Likewise, Andrew P. Griffith, agricultural economist at the University of Ten-
nessee, notes in his late-August market comments: “The classes of cattle with the most downside risk at this point in the year are freshly weaned calves and slaughter cows. As marketings of these two classes of cattle begin to increase moving through September, and then peak in October and November, prices will most likely decline due to calf supply and forage availability. Readers of this information should not take this information as a guarantee, but it should be considered that the probability of prices declining is much higher than prices increasing. “The options that remain available to producers include sacrificing a few pounds and marketing calves as quickly as possible, continuing to grow calves and selling on a market where prices are 5% to 7% lower than today (during the fall), or continuing to grow the calves following weaning and marketing the cattle sometime after the first of the year.” In other words, make the calves part of a stocker enterprise first. After all, cow-calf producers represent the largest segment of stocker production, according to the National Stocker Survey conducted by BEEF Magazine several years ago. Individually and collectively, stocker producers are the reason consumers have year-round access to any cut of beef they want. Besides balancing the supply of calves — the mass majority
born in the spring months — stocker production serves as a shock absorber against all sorts of things, from drught to spikes in grain prices. The stocker sector also removes variation from the industry. You can’t make a diamond out of coal in just a few months; but stocker operations assemble, manage, sort, and market load-lots and pen-lots of similar cattle. That means subsequent management can be more consistent, offering more efficiency and value to the industry overall. At the same time, depending on multiple factors, stocker production can provide positive margins. In the case of cow-calf producers, it can provide an opportunity to add value to calves through both pounds and market timing.
DETERMINING FUTURE VALUE
First of all, I’d never bet against someone with years of hard-won experience in the stocker business when it comes to figuring out whether a particular group of calves or spot in the market represents a solid buy. For the rest of us, though, value of
gain serves as an objective gauge of opportunity. Some apply it on a general basis, looking at the difference in the current cash price of same-class steers at two different weights, for instance, then dividing that price difference by the weight difference. That provides some notion, but the cattle bought that day aren’t going to be sold the same day at a heavier weight. Consequently, others use the current cash price, then assess the opportunity by estimating a selling price for those calves when they’re ready to sell weeks and pounds down the road. For instance, consider a Medium and Large #1-#2 steer calf weighing 518 lbs. and purchased for $157.30/ cwt. at Dickson Regional Livestock in Tennessee on Sept. 3. Adding 232 lbs. and selling in January results in a projected value of gain of *$1.08/lb. (see calculation on following page). That’s with an estimated selling price of $142/cwt. in January, using a weighted average basis (from beefbasis.com) for Dickson, TN, of -$6.72/cwt and the Jan Feeder Cattle contract of $148.725 at the time. The difference between the $1.08 value of gain in this example and cost of gain represents the revenue potential. Peel ran the numbers for Oklahoma the first week of August and came up September/October 2018 • theshowcircuit.com

is not always simply solved through budgeting. Availability of resources such as labor, production knowledge, and feed may be the deciding factor. For assistance answering this question, contact the local Extension office and get in touch with the Farm Area Management specialist. They are a tremendous resource.” At the same time, Peel says stocker demand will be the key to calf prices this fall. He points out forage conditions will determine the degree to which stockers can demand calves, while economic conditions will dictate their willingness to do so. That could be the difference between seasonal declines in calf prices or steeper reductions based on more cattle numbers. He points to the mid-year Cattle report indicating a calf crop this year nearly 2% more than in 2017 and estimated feeder supplies 0.5% larger. *Value of Gain Example: steer purchased at $157.30/cwt. and 518 lbs. Steer sold at 750 lbs. for $142/cwt. • Purchase price (518 lbs. X $157.30/ lb.= $814.81) – sell price (750 X $1.42/ lb. = $1,065.00) = $250.19. • $250.19 ÷ 232 lbs. of added weight = value of gain of $1.08/lb.

with a value of gain of $1.19/lb. for adding 319 lbs. to a steer calf weighing 465 lbs. and purchased at $171.59/cwt. and then selling at 774 lbs. for $150.65. “Value of gain for added feeder cattle weight is largely a reflection of feedlot demand for feeder cattle of various weights,” Peel says. “A value of gain at this level indicates relatively less feedlot demand for lightweight feeders and is an economic signal for increased stocker production. If feeder cattle prices maintain a similar price relationship into the fall and forage conditions are good, fall feeder markets may follow seasonal price patterns rather closely.” In his neck of the woods, Peel considered growing calves on wheat pasture. “Profitability of winter stockers (purchased in October) will depend on numerous budget factors including purchase price, length of grazing period, rate of stocker gain, wheat pasture cost and, of course, selling price in late February or early March,” Peel explains. When asked recently whether cowcalf or stocker production offered the most economic opportunity, Griffith responded via the Think Tank section of his market comments: “Determining which option is best for an individual producer
