Biotin
, is a tremendous vitamin for HAIR GROWTH.The major benefit of Biotin is its ability to strengthen both the hair follicle and hair shaft, along with increased elasticity of the cortex to prevent hair breakage and dryness. This enables healthy, FASTER HAIR GROWTH.
Pro-Vitamin B-5
, is the king of all HAIR CARE vitamins. It stimulates healthy scalp circulation which leads to improved hair health. As an added benefit, it also possesses superior long term moisturizing properties because of its unique ability to penetrate and nourish the hair shaft; then sealing the surface to protect and make the hair shine.
Vitamin E
, is an antioxidant that stimulates circulation throughout the skin and supports capillary growth. When there are more capillaries, the circulation improves leading to increased nutrient absorption into the hair follicles, which speeds hair growth.

Kenny Lee, Mgr. Fairview Angus Ranch Melville, MT “FairView Angus Ranch has used Standing Heat estrus detection patches for the last couple of years with great success. We use around 1000 patches a year and have minimal if any loss, the patch adhesive is so sticky they can actually be difficult to get off the cow. We feel we are catching more true heats, in turn getting more cattle bred. We’ve tried other brands of heat detection patches, but once you use the Standing Heat system you won’t want to use anything else.”
REPEAT ORDERS from SATISFIED USERS!!!
Bryan Vay Rimrock Production, Inc. Giddings, TX “Your patches are the only brand on the market that work, and we have tried them all. Send us another 400! Tree limbs and all, your patches work really well on our cows in the pastures.”

aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.
AJCA
Having an Attitude of Gratitude By Hailey Hilfiker, AJCA Secretary
H
ave you ever wondered where you would be today if it were not for the people who have helped you along the way? As a senior in high school, I have spent a large portion of my time reflecting over the past few years. I began showing cattle three years ago. Along the way, I have been blessed to meet some of the best people in the business. Being a part of the cattle industry has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. As an Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association member, I have had the chance to attend shows throughout the year. Each weekend, I have the opportunity to meet new people, reconnect with friends that I haven’t seen in a long time, and exhibit my cattle. However, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the kindness of others. When I started out, I was about as naïve as they come. With the help of friends, breeders, advisors, and those who had been in the business for a long time, I have been able to come a long way. While they didn’t have to, the people that helped me along did. As independent as we may see ourselves, everyone must have help. As an association, we are grateful for those who give us a helping hand along the way. We’re very grateful to our families for letting us chase our dreams of winning that purple banner. However, sometimes we get so busy chasing

banners that we forget to thank those who make our shows possible. Volunteers such as our state director, show managers, sponsors, adult advisors, livestock directors, livestock show superintendents, show volunteers, breeders, and donors contribute not only to our success in the ring, but to our success in life. Through our sponsors, the AJCA is able to offers scholarships. The AJCA provides its members with leadership and educational opportunities. The life lessons that our members learn such as responsibility, commitment, and hard work will stick with them long after their show days are over. Someone once told me to have an attitude of gratitude. As an organization, we strive to be role models for each other and remind each other that nothing is perfect. There will be ups and downs throughout your show career, but at the end of the day, if you come from a place of gratitude, it’ll all be worth it. I hope that one day I can return the kindness and knowledge that others have shown me.

HEIFER DEVELOPMENT SHOULD INCLUDE GRAZING EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO BREEDING
BY KINDRA GORDON
F
or producers preparing replacement heifers for their first breeding season, special consideration should also be given to getting heifers grazing experience on pasture before breeding season begins. That’s the advice of SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist Robin Salverson. She explains that grazing experience is important because studies have shown when heifers move from being fed in a drylot to a pasture, most lose weight before becoming accustomed to their new environment. Specifically, Salverson cites one study that found heifers lost on average 56.3 pounds during their first two weeks on pasture – about 4 pounds per day. As well, she says 60% of those heifers were found to become anovular – not ovulating – within 13 to 15 days of the diet change. Additionally, Salverson and her SDSU colleagues have studied heifers developed in feedlot and pasture situations and found that the heifers developed in a drylot had a higher percentage cycling prior to breeding, but the heifers developed on grass actually had a higher pregnancy success. Salverson attributes this to a negative energy crash experienced by the feedlot-developed heifers after the transition from the feedlot to grass immediately following breeding. Salverson says researchers believe this happens when cattle are introduced to a novel environment, they try new feedstuffs a little at a time before increasing intake. This period of adjustment can result in a negative gain on heifers. But, it’s not just the diet change that causes the heifers’ weight loss, Salverson says foraging behavior is also a factor. She explains that when initially put on pasture, heifers expend a great deal of energy moving around and exploring the space. To document this, SDSU researchers placed pedometers on heifers to track and compare the number of steps they take in a drylot versus a pasture setting. Prior to AI, heifers in the drylot averaged about 2,500 to 3,000 steps daily. Meanwhile, heifers on pasture averaged about 6,000 steps per day. After breeding, when the two groups were both turned onto pasture, those that had been in the drylot had nearly double the number of steps on the first day on pasture. Specifically, heifers with grazing experience had about 10,000 steps on the
first day on pasture, while those coming from the drylot had about 18,000 steps. Salverson says by about the fourth day on pasture, both heifer groups were averaging 8,000 to 9,000 steps daily. But she notes that the extra steps the drylot group took during the first few days expends a lot of energy – which may impact weight gain and the pregnancy rate for those heifers. According to Salverson the bottomline from this research is this: If heifers are naïve to grazing, they will experience a negative plane of nutrition, which can impact weight and pregnancy success. Therefore, in heifer development she recommends to producers, “If you are able to allow heifers some access to pasture before breeding it gives those heifers knowledge and ability to graze.” Salverson notes that access to just 40 acres can be beneficial. “Anything so heifers are allowed to graze,” she states. That said, she emphasizes that heifers do not have to be on a full grazing diet while gaining this experience, they can be supplemented with hay, dried distillers grain, wheat midds, or other supplements. How far in advance should heifers be put on pasture before breeding to ensure they are back on a positive plane of nutrition? Salverson says, “If you get heifers on grass at least 30 days prior to breeding, reproductive success should not be affected.” For producers who breed in a drylot, she suggests producers adapt heifers to grass for up to a month before breeding. Then heifers could be drylotted and supplemented for 10 days while AIing. When they are turned out to grass post-AI, they should not go through the negative gain period. For producers who do not have the option of getting heifers onto pasture before breeding, Salverson advises breeding in the drylot and then maintaining them there another 30 days after breeding, or supplementing them on grass if they are immediately put on pasture after breeding. All total, Salverson underscores that the ultimate goal is developing heifers so they stay in the herd and have a long, productive life. Minimizing energy crashes as heifers transition to pasture by managing nutrition before and after breeding appears to be integral to pregnancy success and a heifers transition into the cowherd, Salverson concludes. Greetings: SDJPS Exhibitors
95 73 63 60 58 55 50 25 25
With spring poking it head out here and there, those in agriculture are getting it done. Our hearts and prayers go out to our southern friends who have suffered devastating losses. Ag is not for the faint hearted, farmers and ranchers are in it for the long haul. This season’s baby lambs, goats and pigs are being born right now and that to me is exciting. Getting the new crop on the ground and seeing what your planned matings have produced is energizing. Now does it always go as planned? No! But you have to look at the big picture. Whether its learning more about the project with some late night reading, checking pens more often, feeding in sub-zero temps, extending a helping hand to neighbors- farmers and ranchers go out of their way to make sure that animals are cared for as best as possible. If you are involved in agriculture you are a life long learner. That is one of the best things we can instill in our children, so our traditions, and way of life continue. There will be good days and not so good days, celebrate the things that do go right! Sincerely,
73 70 48 45 40 25 20 20 18 10

ALEC MYERS TAYLORVILLE, IL | AGE: 20
Species and breeds of livestock you show: I show and raise mostly Chianina, Maine-Anjou, Mainetainer, and crossbred cattle among the many breeds represented within my herd. I primarily show Hampshire and crossbred market wethers. Siblings names/ages: None What is your favorite show and why? The NAILE. I enjoy it so much because it is a show my family and I do our best to attend every year. From the facilities to the green shavings, Louisville is a truly great place to experience as well as one of my all time favorite places to exhibit. All-time favorite show animal and why? Maverick, my Simmental steer I exhibited last year. He sticks out to me as my favorite because of the fact I raised him and throughout the spring and summer had a great amount of success with him. Being able to win the Simmental breed and be top five overall steers at every show I went to with a steer I raised is something not very many people can say very often. While he was a bit of a pain at times, I will always remember the great times and the success that we managed to have together. Favorite show memory: Winning Third Overall Steer at the Illinois State Fair last summer is one of my all time favorite memories. Being able to exhibit in the coliseum as well as being in the top five was such a great experience. I can still remember everything about that day and all the great memories that came from it. Least favorite show-day task: Breaking down glue and paint on cattle after a long day of showing. Favorite TV Show: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Favorite book/author: J.K. Rowling Favorite activities outside of the show ring: Playing or watching sports of any kind, spending time with friends and family. What do you want to do for a career? I plan on obtaining my degree in Ag-Business. After I obtain my degree I would ideally like to work in the sales sector of the industry. Favorite food: A ribeye steak. Would you rather watch a scary or funny movie? A funny movie. What is your pet peeve? My mom making sure my shirt is tucked in before I enter the show ring. Would you rather encounter snakes or mice? Mice Who is someone you want to thank for helping you succeed in the show ring? My dad is a huge part of the reason I’ve been so successful not only in the show ring but in many aspects of my life. He is the one person that has helped hone in my knowledge on livestock and being successful while in the ring. I am fortunate enough to not only have my dad be my biggest mentor and supporter, but my best friend as well.
SAVANNAH PAGE JEFFERSON, GA | AGE: 13
Species and breeds of livestock you show: I show Hogs and Beef Cattle. I show SimAngus & Angus heifers. I also show crossbred, hampshire, duroc, yorkshire, and landrace hogs. Siblings names/ages: I have a 4 year old brother named Carson Page. What is your favorite show and why? My favorite show is the National Junior Swine Association Summer Spectacular a swine show in Louisville, Kentucky. The Summer Spectacular is my favorite show because I get to see my friends from all across the country and I enjoy all the different contest activities they have to offer. All-time favorite show animal and why? I have a couple of favorite show pigs! But my favorite pig is the first pig I showed at the North American International Livestock Show and his name was Si. I loved him because of his personality, show ring presence, and what he accomplished. He always gave me kisses and made me laugh! He was the first pig I showed at the NAILE and I didn’t know what to expect since the show is terminal! When I had to say goodbye to him it didn’t go so well because I had spent countless hours in the barn with him, practiced with him, bonded with him and even did well in the showring with him. Favorite show memory: My favorite show memory is winning the North American International Livestock Exposition with my hog named Murray. This was such a special memory because this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me! Least favorite show-day task: My least favorite show day task is just having to wake up so early in the morning on cattle show days to prepare for the show ring. I am not a morning person! Favorite TV Show: Chrisley Knows Best Favorite activities outside of the show ring: I do not do any sports but I am very active with FFA. I am the Reporter for my FFA Chapter so i am very busy writing articles. We also do a lot of community service projects so I am very busy with that. What do you want to do for a career? I am still deciding on what I would like to do when I am older. I think I might to be a teacher or a veterinarian. Favorite food: Chicken and Dumplings Would you rather watch a scary or funny movie? I would rather watch a funny movie. What is your pet peeve? Don’t talk about someone behind their back unless you can tell it to their face. Would you rather encounter snakes or mice? Mouse Who is someone you want to thank for helping you succeed in the show ring? I would like to thank my parents for multiple reasons. I am so thankful for what they do for me because I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for them. They push me to be the best I can be and strive to be a better person. We spend countless hours in the barn together working as a team to achieve something greater than just winning. I just want to think them again for all the help and support for me.

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
Are Heavy Beef Carcass Weights Sustainable?
A
s I write this column, I just returned home from attending the Midwest Animal Science Meetings held in Omaha. While attending these meetings I sat in on the Harlan Ritchie Symposium offered each year in honor of the late Harlan Ritchie, renowned Extension Specialist for over 40 years at Michigan State University. The four speakers Dr. Shike (UIUC), Dr. Sexton (CAB), Dr. Bruns (UN), and Dr. Lawrence (WT A&M)] presented excellent papers on the subjects of beef cattle type, quality grade, yield grade, selection trends and future opportunities. This symposium, one of the better ones I have attended in recent years, gave me cause to reflect about our great industry. Consequently, I will share a few of my random thoughts in this article. Over the years, I have served on numerous boards, listened to many professors, read far too many articles, and heard way too much barn talk. What have I learned? Most (not all) of our opinion influencers and experts of the time for any industry (you name it) have been wrong regarding future predictions. In 1971, as a junior in college, I sat in pork production class and listened to the experts tell us we were getting market hogs too large. We were informed that large hog carcasses resulted in hams too large for consumers to purchase. The swine industry needed to moderate market hog size. At that time, market hogs weighed around 220 to 240 pounds. How wrong was that analysis? Today market hogs are 280 to 300 pounds. I thought to myself at the time, why couldn’t we just cut bone-in hams in half? And, what about canned ham – size did not matter – canned ham could be any size?

By Dr. Gary Warner, Elgin Veterinary Hospital
In the early 1980s the official rhetoric of the NCA (National Cattleman’s Association the forerunner of the NCBA) was that beef was a commodity industry and that promoting branded beef products was counterproductive because a branded product implied something was bad about generic beef. How wrong was that analysis? I guess the marketplace proved that opinion wrong – look at all the branded beef products available today, especially Certified Angus Beef. I remember great discussions and the numerous symposiums of the 1980s and early 1990s regarding optimum market steer size, whether the discussion centered around carcass weight or live weight. I remember when the experts expounded that beef cuts had to fit the box and carcass weights should range between 700 and 800 pounds. At a 63% dress, that is 1,111 pounds to 1,270 pounds. The industry blew by those weights, did they not? My father, an excellent swine producer, was right about at least one thing – the beef industry should watch what happens in the swine industry i.e. trends in the cattle industry always follow trends in the swine industry. It is partly an effect of generation interval. Remember when the champion market steer could not weigh 1,300 pounds (that was the kiss of death) but if your steer weighed 1295 pounds, he was in the hunt. Those days are gone and they should be. In 2015, the aver-
age market steer carcass weighed 928 pounds. Since then it has decreased some but not much. There are several factors affecting the increase in carcass weights we have observed over the years. These factors include an increase in cow size, economies of scale (size) on the kill and processing floors, decrease in cattle numbers of the last two decades and a need for increased pounds of retail beef , and the wide spread use of distillers grains that make it easier to feed cattle to heavier weights without experiencing lactic acidosis. Since the 1990s, packers have raised the maximum carcass weight at which price docks can occur from 900 pounds to 950 pounds to 1,000 pounds. Live weights at which steers are routinely marketed have increased from 1,000 pounds in the early 1970s to 1,400 to 1,500 pounds currently. The carcass weights of some steers harvested today are greater than the live weights of the 1960s. Can the industry continue to increase market weights? Maybe not. There are physical limitations to carcass size and the human ability to handle the carcass within the packing plant that may not be relative to the pork carcass – at least not yet. However, the carcass weights today are far removed from the discussions of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. So, where is the beef industry head-
ed? I do not know. But I do know this, too often our opinion influencers forget about basic scientific principles or use only the science they choose to pick. Some facts about where we are now: The semen from over 100 breeds of cattle is available within the U.S. Of the service sires marketed, Angus/Red Angus, Hereford, Simmental genetics and Charolais make up over 95% of the total; and Angus are responsible for about 80% of the total. As the beef cattle inventory declined in recent years, the percent of fed cattle comprised of Holstein breeding has increased to nearly 20%. In 2005, 52.9% of cattle carcasses graded Choice. In 2015, 69.1% graded Choice and 5.1% graded Prime, or stated another way almost 75% graded low Choice or higher. What has contributed to this increase in quality grade? Increasing the number of days cattle are on feed, increasing carcass weights, improved EPDs for marbling, changes in diets and improved bunk management, and selling cattle on a grid formula as opposed to selling on a live weight basis. All of these factors have contributed to where the industry is currently. Where are we headed – I do not know – but I do have an opinion. Maybe I will share my opinion in a future article. Editors Note: If you have questions about this topic, please feel free to contact Dr. Walker at 309-963-4913, pwalker@ilstu.edu or 578 Old Peoria Rd, Danvers, IL 61732

What Drives Success? Focus on being a life-long learner and success will likely follow.
By Kindra Gordon
I
n the beef industry – where weather, market conditions, input prices and consumer influences are ever fluctuating – success can seem like an elusive goal. How can those in the industry sustain their involvement and optimism?
development and identifying values and goals are essential to future success. He says, “If you’re not dedicating 10% to 15% of your time to improving [yourself and your business], you’ll be outpaced.” He adds, “Invest in yourself. It will change your life and career.”
A strong work ethic, faith, valuing integrity and moral character are all key traits that many successful people emphasize. But another critical ingredient toward achieving future success may be having an open mind to be a life-long learner.
Additionally, Spence likes to prompt people of all ages to think big about the future, posing the question: “What do you need to do that will make an impact 10 to 15 years from now?”
He tells individuals, “You can’t just make John Spence, a business and leadership con- daily decisions; you must make 20-year decisultant emphasizes that investing in personal sions and think about the next generation.”

Read and learn
Regarding resources for learning, Spence notes that many options are available online –from free college courses to TED talks on an array of topics. He also encourages individuals to read books to challenge their thinking and increase knowledge. He reports that after graduating from college the average person reads 0.5 books per year. To this, Spence said, “If you read 6 books a year, you would be in the top 1% of the U.S. population for selflearning. If you read 12 books per year, you would be in the top 1% of the world for self-learning.” Books and articles can be a useful tool to prompt changes in thought. And, when articles (or webinars) are shared among a farm or ranch family or business management team to read and discuss, they may help stimulate new ideas for the business. Of this approach toward preparing for change and new ideas, Spence notes, “The industry is changing, and we have to change or we won’t survive.” Spence also encourages individuals to take time to develop a focused plan for their future. He said, “Ninety percent of people have no written goals. They have no plan for success. Hope is not a strategy.” Spence also believes that being surrounded with a network of successful people is important. He notes, “You become what you focus on and like the people you spend time with…What you focus on will determine what your life looks like 10 years from now.”
and started for area feedyards, over 75,000 cattle fed-to-finish and nearly 40 research projects completed. Houghton notes, “When start-up challenges are combined with the normal day-to-day obstacles every business owner faces such as long hours, debt load, cash flow, market fluctuations, burdensome regulation, etc., it can all become overwhelming. An ability to tackle each challenge one-by-one, while maintaining focus on the overall business concept, was crucial to finding our way through the maze.” Assembling a team of high quality, committed employees and identifying customers who share the business vision is also important to achieving success, she says. “It takes priorities,” is what brothers Shawn and Shane Tiffany say when asked how they can accomplish so much. As co-owners of a Kansas-based feedlot, these brothers jokingly say they don’t watch TV, rather they pour their time into their faith, family and business. Shane adds, “We are both Type-A personalities. In the early years of our business we felt we had to have a say in everything. But we learned to turn responsibility and trust over to key employees and they’ve flourished in those roles. In turn, it’s allowed us time for family and other roles.”
“If you read 6 books a year, you would be in the top 1% of the U.S. population for self-learning.
Industry Perspective
What do those within the beef industry attribute their success to? We posed that question to a few key individuals and got the following responses: “The ability to see the big picture of the past, living in the present, but envisioning the future,” is what Ronnie Green, Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, credits with his path to success. Along with being visionary, he adds that the ability to communicate with people is essential. “Persistence, along with a strong belief in the value of our business concept,” is the core quality Patsy Houghton attributes to her success in establishing Heartland Cattle Company in McCook, Neb. After 26 years in business, Heartland counts over 105,000 heifers developed and AI’ed, over 175,000 calves weaned
Being a successful leader
For individuals who have the additional responsibility of being a business or organization leader, business strategist John Spence advises that to be a successful leader you must first recognize what people want from leaders. Based on his research of successful business leaders, he says it boils down to the following:
People want a leader who: • Tell the truth; • Have a clear vision for where the business or organization is going; • Have the skills to get the business or organization there successfully; • Are excited [passionate] about taking the journey with their employees; and • Treat individuals fairly and support them along the way. In a nutshell, Spence says the best leadership advice is to simply follow some basic rules: show up on time, do what you say you will do, finish what you start, say please and thank you, and give more than others expect. “It’s that easy, but very few people do those things. If you become one of the few people who do those things, you will become other people’s hero,” Spence concludes. Editor’s Note: Learn more about Spence at his website www.johnspence.com and see some of the books he recommends by clicking on Resources.

Zero Tolerance – What does it Mean?
T
his article is not necessarily about science or animal production, or even livestock show management; it is intended to discuss the position of zero tolerance toward drug residue adopted by most of the major livestock shows. It is a policy that places undue burden on livestock exhibitors, parents, animal health professionals and county agents/agriculture teachers. Drugs that are labeled for use or have a label declaring dosage, route of administration, etc. in food animals have recommended withdrawal times established with defined tolerances for drug residues at harvest of the animal. These tolerances have been identified after extensive drug testing in animals destined for the food chain, not only for excretion via urine or feces , but also tissue residue levels; both for muscle and organs.
This testing has continually been performed for many years, and although residue from certain drugs could be present, the levels were proven to not be harmful to humans at those levels. This method has been proven for several decades and food safety is the No. 1 concern and intent of the meat production industry. Therefore, it could be said that our federal food safety standards

don’t ascribe to a zero tolerance policy but do operate under a scientific system of tolerance and understanding. There are guidelines established by USDA/FDA/APHIS/FSIS on the appropriate use of drugs in food producing animals that are not approved or that have established withdrawal times: these guidelines are included in an act known as AMDUCA (Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act). AMDUCA guides veterinarians in their usage of drugs, treating patients where VCPR (Veterinarian/Client/Patient Relationship) is present. The guidelines are for approved animal drugs as well as some that are not approved but prudent for use to benefit the welfare of the animal. If an approved drug is available for use in treating a specific condition, it must be used. Dosage, route of administration, and intended use must be strictly followed. Those drugs that are not listed for approved use in food animals must meet a recognized withdrawal time which can be difficult to determine in some species. Furthermore, route of administration may make a huge difference in elimination withdrawal times and further complicate establishment of proper withdrawal.
Stock Shows’ Zero Tolerance As the rules now stand for some of the majors, there is zero tolerance of any drug residue found in any market animal. Breeding animals may get a pass for certain approved antibiotics but also come under zero tolerance when it comes to performance enhancing drugs (analgesics, anti-inflammatories, or growth enhancement). This zero tolerance puts undue burden on all associated with the animals, as no one has specific guidelines established with which to make an educated decision on when to withdraw treatment. As a veterinary practitioner, am I supposed to tell a child or a parent that I can’t help them get a project to a show that they have spent a year working on? Not to mention the monetary investment in the project purchase and feed expense which goes along with raising a quality project. Zero tolerance actually facilitates enforcement of residue rules by the stock show. Because no level of drug is allowed to be present in an animal, it removes all the grey areas that might be used to explain why an animal had some level of drug present. Therefore, legal counsel has the opportunity to enforce rules without concern for allowing reasonable explanation of a drug’s presence causing

forfeiture of prizes and income from an otherwise successful project. In other words, zero tolerance greatly improves enforcement of livestock show rules with minimal cost and expended time of show personnel. Further consideration may need to be given to reported recent research involving environmental contamination by treated animals. Some reports speak of known “clean” animals being exposed to the bedding of “treated” animals. The “clean” animals then test positive for the same drug used in the treatment of the animal that contaminated the bedding. How many times has it occurred that animals may follow others at a stock show and reside on the same bedding? Or what about the market hog that tested positive for an antihistamine at a major livestock show in the northern U.S. recently? We in the veterinary community are very concerned about prescribing approved or extra label drugs for fear of initiating residue in the project animal. The recent positive test of an animal at a state fair in the northern United States for an itch cream could have actually resulted
from cross contamination from an untested, non-placing animal, either through direct contact or oral ingestion. Have the livestock shows thought of this as a possibility, or does the owner responsibility rule, which so many of the stock shows include in their rules, supersede such an event? For those of you that are not familiar with owner responsibility; these rules specifically state the owner of the project animal is specifically responsible for all actions regarding that animal; any residue the animal may have from any contact with drugs or feed stuffs carrying the residue (ingested, topical, injected, etc.) any liability caused by an unruly or uncontrolled animal or any other event that may cause adulteration of the sub-
sequent carcass of that project animal. Zero tolerance and owner responsibility relieves the stock shows from having to make difficult choices. For the benefit of all concerned – the stock shows, the exhibitors, the parents, Ag teachers, county agents and, in particular, the veterinary community – there needs to be a process involving all the stakeholders to come to some understanding of issues involving residue testing at the stock shows. There are many health care professionals with a vast amount of experience that can help dictate a better approach to the issues currently at hand.

Trading Up in Herd Revenue By Wes Ishmael

lthough still discounted relative to fed cattle, resurgent calf and feeder cattle prices continued to lift hopes through March. “It is possible that current market strength is more than just a seasonal first-quarter price rally,” says Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in recent market comments.
214 April 2017 • theshowcircuit.com
Supply is part of the story with harvestready cattle through early spring likely the snuggest they will be for the year. For that matter, harvest supply will likely be the tightest for the next several years, considering the current trajectory of the cattle cycle. Demand is playing a starring role, too.
“However, February retail beef prices were stronger with both retail Choice and all-fresh beef prices higher. The ratio of retail all-fresh beef price to poultry price increased in February despite a slight increase in poultry prices as well. Retail pork prices were also higher in February.”
“Domestic beef demand appears to be continuing stronger, though March data are not yet available,” Peel says.
U.S. beef exports continue to gain steam, despite the higher value of the U.S. dollar.

The Big Picture (continued) fied the real-world benefits of getting heifers bred earlier in the season.
From a management standpoint, they follow these rules:
Lamb inherited management of the research herd 9 years ago. This is a 300-head cow-calf operation. About half the mamas are Angus or Sim-Angus; the other half are Brangus or Braford. Management was loose and the calving season long.
• Only heifers that become pregnant within the first 25 days of the breeding season are considered as replacements.
“We decided that from a production standpoint, the No. 1 thing we needed to select for was pregnancy,” Lamb says. He adds that reproduction has four times the economic impact on herd economics than any other trait. Specifically, Lamb and his crew developed a set of nonnegotiable rules for cows to enter and remain in the herd.
• Every female is exposed to synchronization and artificial insemination (AI). Rather than think of synchronization as way to get semen in the cow or heifer, Lamb encourages producers to think of it as reproductive technology that stimulates cycling.
Every female must: • Calve by the time she’s 2 years old. • Calve every year. • Calf without assistance—that includes replacement heifers and any amount of assistance. Lamb explains that data indicates pregnancy rates are 10% less in cows that require assistance of any kind. • Provide sufficient resources for her calf to reach its genetic potential. • Raise a calf genetically capable of performing to expectations. If a heifer has a calf that doesn’t perform, the heifer is culled. • Maintain the Body Condition Score for their conditions. That keeps them away from having to manage more than one group of heifers and cows in terms of nutrition. • Be calm.
216 April 2017 • theshowcircuit.com
• The breeding season will be tightened as much as possible.
With heifer selection and these rules in mind, Lamb emphasizes their first criteria is breeding within the first 25 days. Rather than select heifers and then hope enough of them get bred on time, they synchronize and breed 90 heifers. Typically, 70-80 heifers will breed on time. That leaves them 10-20 to cull based on other criteria in order to arrive at the 60 needed replacements. The results are stunning A higher percentage of cows and heifers calve within the first 30 days each succeeding year. Calves from the 2014 season were worth $169 per head (price constant basis) more than those produced six years earlier, much of it due simply to a higher percentage of calves being born earlier in the season.

One In The Chamber & Loaded For Bear are the best sons of Tracy Goretska’s legendary 805 donor. One In The Chamber delivers extra foot size and power on flatter made females. Kerry Danker of Avoca, Iowa had four One In The Chamber calves born in 2016 with all making the sale pen and the top two selling for $27,000 and $25,500 the following September. Talk about return on investment. Loaded For Bear is a slightly shorter legged version of his brother that also has explosive muscle pattern and elite structural soundness. We look for these two powerful full brothers to continue to gain widespread popularity in 2017.

He shouts style and class. He is the hottest bull in the Simmental breed and for good reason. He is the kind to build a base around and we couldn't be more excited to be in on this great sire. He is the big footed, solid made kind that breeds solid, consistent, good looking offspring. Plus he has the added bonus of being a complete outcross to Dream On. Keep the bases LOADED UP, for proven, profitable genetics.

First calf heifers are something everyone in the business deals with, getting a nice small calf has so many advantages. You have a live calf, that get’s up and sucks (if they don’t do those two things does anything else matter?), a first calf heifer that will breed back quicker because she’s had no trauma, and you get a replacement female that is a great cow with calving ease bred into her pedigree.

“Haired Up is a product we truly believe in. Within 10 days we could see it working. Bulls normally have a courser feel to their hair especially big bulls. The texture, condition and softness it made in our National Champion Bull “Tradition of 24” hair was exactly what we were looking and hoping for. Go ahead and give Haired Up a try, it’s worth it” - AMIE STERTZBACH, STERTZBACH CATTLE CO. GRAND CHAMPION ANGUS BULL, 2017 NWSS
“Haired Up has become our top choice for a supplement to encourage hair growth in the summer months leading up to Jr Nationals and State Fair season!! The results speak for themselves...its tested and proven and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a solution in that category!!” - RAYMOND GONNET, COMPETITIVE EDGE GENETICS
SUPREME CHAMPION HEIFER, 2016 KS STATE FAIR JR. SHOW “Haired up I feel is one of the best products on the line at CSS. I love how cattle grow a thick, healthy coat of hair and unlike most cattle hair promoters they get picky eating. With haired up they still eat and stay on feed. You won’t need coolers when you use haired up. Feed as its instructed and with proper daily hair work at home you will be as hairy if not hairier than anyone else at the show.” - TY BAYER, TC REDS GRAND CHAMPION ANGUS HEIFER, 2015 JR. SHOW NWSS

We have been searching for a new Maine-Anjou herd sire for several years. When I spotted BOE Epic in the yards in Denver I knew he was the one! He is basically a total outcross to our cow herd as well as an outcross to most of the popular pedigrees in the Maine breed today. However, his phenotype is what separates him from the rest of the field. Incredible structure, bold center rib, massive hipped, and an awesome look. He's not all fluff and stuff, in Denver at 10 months of age, scanned a 17.8 in REA and weighed 1,221 lbs. You don't find a 75% Maine-Anjou sire like this everyday! He was the top selling bull in the Denver Maine Bull Sale and he was a steal in our mind. We have had an overwhelming number of cattlemen placing semen orders. The semen cost is $100 per unit with a 10 unit minimum and we will fill semen orders on a first come, first serve basis.
