I

s it really time for summer to start winding down? Hardly seems possible but the calendar doesn’t lie! I would like to congratulate all of our members who competed at the many junior nationals this summer. I have heard about the many successes our members had. I know that, as usual, all of you did your best and did an outstanding job representing the great state of Oklahoma!

To those members who were not able to make a junior national, I can guarantee you were putting in countless hours of working hair along with showmanship for the upcoming fall show season. A lot of our members attended various leadership camps this summer. We have many members who not only show but also play athletics. They too compete in summer leagues, summer workouts and summer camps. So whatever category you fall into remember to give it 100%, do not to be afraid to ask for help and be ready to share what you learned to someone else. As we get ready for school to start back just remember, IT ALL STARTS BEFORE SUNRISE.

HOOF ROT

By Dr. Kelly Warner, DVM Elgin Veterinary Hospital Elgin, TX

With record rainfall in many areas this year, producers and their veterinarians expect a rise in hoof rot cases. This article will focus on what causes hoof rot, how to identify cases on the farm and current therapies to treat hoof rot.

Interdigital necrobacillosis, Interdigital phlegmon, Foul of the Foot, Hoof Rot – WHAT? Hoof rot (also known to some by the names above) is caused primarily by the bacteria, Fusobacterium necrophorum. This is a gram negative anaerobic bacteria, which means that this bacteria thrives in environments with little oxygen. Other causative bacterial sources that may facilitate the creation of lesions are Prevotella melaninogenicus, Dichelobacter nodosus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Trueperella pyogenes. These bacteria are normally found in the gastrointestinal tract of ruminants, but are not always identified in their feces. For an animal to develop foot rot, the space in between the animal’s toes must be compromised. This can occur when an animal is in constant moist footing (muddy areas, stalls that have not been cleaned). The prolonged exposure to moisture causes the interdigital skin (area between the toes) to become soft. Abrasions or penetration of the skin can occur with any sharp objects (sticks, sharp rocks, concrete, sharp plant life) allowing the bacteria to colonize the tissue. What do you see? Lameness is the primary clinical sign of animals affected by hoof rot. The condition causes inflammation and irritation of the interdigital skin starting along the front of the foot and progressing to backside of the foot. This area can be seen as red and inflamed with local tissue swelling (cellulitis) causing a widening of the interdigital space and separation of the toes. The tissues can become macerated (cracking, pieces of skin or soft tissues can be easily removed) and may produce a very foul odor. Infection of one limb is typical, with hindlimbs more frequently infected than the front. As the disease progresses, tendons, synovial structures (joints in the toe/foot, tendon sheaths), or bone may be affected by the infection. A veterinarian should be consulted if the animal has a non-weight bearing lameness, large amount of swelling, or a draining tract with pus. If the above mentioned structures or clinical signs are observed, typical treatment routines will likely not be effective and may require more intensive therapy. Additionally, some animals may have decreased feed intake, decreased milk production and may be lethargic due to pain associated with the condition. Diagnosis Most foot rot infections have the typical lesion appearance and history described above. Diagnosis is usually made with resolution of clinical signs after conventional treatment protocols. However, other conditions of the foot may need to be ruled out if the patient does not respond appropriately. Beware of the potential for Hairy Heel Warts (Digital Dermatitis, Papillomatous digital dermatitis),

trauma, foreign body (i.e. sharp object), laminitis, infection of a joint, solar abscess or white line disease. Blood work or bacterial cultures are usually not performed, as these results are rarely conclusive. Cultures obtained from the foot are likely to contain a majority of fecal contaminants. However, sometimes a radiograph (X-ray) may be necessary to rule out any extensive damage to joints or bones of the foot. Treatment Typical antimicrobial treatment options include procaine penicillin, oxytetracycline, ceftiofur, sulfamethazine, or florfenicol. As there are many antimicrobial options available, choices are usually made concerning ease of use with regards to route, frequency of administration, and withdrawal times. Anti-inflammatories will alleviate pain and inflammation, which may in turn help to increase appetite. Topical treatments involve cleaning the foot with betadine and water and removing tissues that are loose and non-viable. Foot bandages with topical medications (tetracycline powder, Cop-

pertox) may be applied but need to be changed every 2-3 days. Bandages must be monitored daily for any indications of wetness or if they become too tight on the animal’s foot. Foot baths may provide some relief in a herd outbreak situation. Typical footbath formulations may include 2% copper sulfate, lincomycin-spectinomycin, or oxytetracycline. Footbaths can be a little tricky for some producers, as it may be difficult to ensure a long enough contact time to the affected foot or adequate concentrations of the additives to water. Additionally, organic debris

from the animal’s feet may inactivate added substances to the foot bath treatment, making the process futile. Affected animals should be isolated from the herd until clinical signs are resolved. Animals should be stalled in dry areas to decrease recovery times. Having dry footing is paramount to the treatment protocol. Cattle from the same herd should be monitored closely for similar signs since early treatment decreases overall treatment time. It is worth noting that there are no approved feed additives for

There are commercial vaccines available on the market that have had mixed outcomes in regards to efficacy. Take Home Footrot is a commonly observed lameness issue in show cattle that typically responds to conventional therapies. However, those that do not have usual clinical appearance or those that are not responding to treatment within 3-5 days may need to be seen by a veterinarian. The most beneficial way to prevent hoof rot is to keep animals on dry footing as often as possible. Dr. Kelly Warner is a 2013 graduate of Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. After completing an Equine Sports Medicine Internship in May of 2014, she returned to Elgin, Texas to work alongside her father, Gary Warner, for a year. PROFESSORTOPRODUCER

MORE ON CREEP DIETS By: Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting

Since publication of my last article regarding creep feeding, I have had several requests for more creep diet recipes. As I have written previously my two favorite creep diets are: 1) a 50:50 mixture by weight of corn gluten feed pellets and soybean hull pellets, and 2) a 50:50 mixture by volume of beet pulp and whole soybeans supplemented with Kent Baby Beef 34 ™ containing 240g of Bovatec : ton (on a weight containing basis this is a 1:1:1 mixture of beet pulp, oats and protein supplement). There are many creep diets available and this article will list several. The important points to remember regarding creep diet are 1) the energy to protein ratio should be medium to low, 2) only natural protein should be fed (no non-protein nitrogen, no urea) 3) the diet should contain whole grains, be pelleted or the grain should be rolled, not ground, and once offered to calves the creep should always be available. One alternative creep diet does not include grain at all but rather allows calves to graze on adjoining pasture containing legumes that is not available to the cows. This creep feeding method is offered with reservation as it often causes bloating and poloxalene blocks must be provided to aid in prevention of bloat. Providing polaxalene blocks to calves consuming creep feed is a preferred management practice as calves consuming any creep diet in large amounts are subject to bloating. I routinely place a poloxalene block in the creep bunk within the creep areas for our operation. However, these blocks draw moisture and placing the blocks in a self-feeding creep feeder trough is not recommended as the blocks can contribute to moldy feed. In our operation the creep areas are 16’ x 16’ pens containing a wood bunk in an open front cattle shed within each pasture. We hand feed the creep ration twice each day (morning and evening) so the feed is always fresh. Table 1 contains commodity prices (current prices July 5, 2015) used to calculate the cost: pound of the following creep diets. Several creep diets are listed that provide 13-17% crude protein. This is not an exhaustive list but just some example diets. None of these creep diets represent a TMR so they are not completely balanced diets. They are creep diets. Good luck selecting cost effective feedstuffs to design your creep diets. TABLE 1 COMMODITY PRICES FEEDSTUFF

uring my experience from being as a member of the Arkansas Junior Cattleman, there has been one board member that has influenced me the most. There has been one person, one friend, one amazing guy that has been the biggest influence on my life more than anyone. Someone I am proud to also call my brother, Wyatt Mosher.

Everyone has a hero in their life. Someone that they look to for guidance and help. Someone that is always ready to lend a helping hand. Someone who is always there for you. Wyatt is not always wise and helpful, sometimes he is quite the opposite. His kindness goes to a point COLTE MOSHER of annoyance sometimes. For instance AJCA Area 2 Vice President when we are at the front of the line, and he holds the door for over 400 people at nationals or when he helps someone with their heifer even though his shows before them. Sometimes he bosses me around and we lock horns over who does what. Wyatt tells me “life’s not fair” and that life can’t always go our way. He always told me the truth no matter how much it hurts. He is the most honest person I know and also the kindest. There is no better brother I could ask for to raise and grow up with me. He has always been looking out for me. Never letting me put myself at risk. He has always done the hard work. He took care of the farm during my recent hospitalization. He worked my heifers while I recovered, and he has taken care of me and truly cares about me.

My brother is the best role model there has ever been. I would die for him and he would die for me. He taught me how to lose with dignity and how to congratulate the victor. How to walk away from a confrontation instead of facing it head on. How I should be me and to do what I want. How to be selfless. How to help others first and myself later. How life is unfair and that there is nothing more important than family. He taught me that blood is thicker than water. He has encouraged me to go through life being the best I can and doing the best I can. To be a good person you have to be taught to be a good person. A good role model ask for you to do as they do and as they say. A good role model does not curse or drink or smoke. A good role model practices what he preaches. I am glad to say that I have the best role model there is. This article is dedicated to my big brother, Wyatt Mosher, the best big brother a man could ask for.

Chad Thompson felt uneasy on June 18, 2014. He needed to cut hay, but clouds gathered on the South Dakota prairie near Wessington Springs. His son’s birthday was the next day, so he decided to drive an hour southeast to Mitchell to buy a gift. His life would forever be changed when he turned back into the driveway.

A Storm’s Wrath

Intuition can be ironic. June brings muggy, mid-80 temperatures to the flat, rolling hills in south central South Dakota. However, rain scarce that time of year loomed in the late afternoon sky. Chad can’t remember a tornado touching down in his lifetime. The last had been in 1960. Yet as he hooked up the hay equipment that Wednesday, Chad told farm hand Luke Starkey, “It feels like a tornado is going to hit today.” Luke replied, “Don’t say that, and we both laughed.” Chad couldn’t shake the gut feeling that something was going to happen, but he remembers being so busy he didn’t check the weather. Around 7 p.m., Luke called because weathermen were broadcasting a tornado towering over the farm. Still in Mitchell, Chad called his wife, Sara, who was putting their three kids to bed, unaware of the storm’s severity or the sirens blaring 11 miles away in Wessington Springs. School tornado drills had left their oldest always asking about tornadoes. Sara always replied, “No, we don’t have tornadoes.” When their son heard Chad say “tornado,” he was scared, she added. With five minutes of warning, Sara grabbed the boys and a flashlight and ran for the basement. She threw a mattress over their heads. They heard banging overhead as they huddled together, and she tried to calm the boys by reading books. “You could feel it. The pressure was so heavy like when you go up in an airplane,” she added. “At that point, reading wasn’t working because I couldn’t keep my voice from shaking so I just said, ‘Let’s pray.’ I felt helpless. I was so scared because I didn’t know how to protect my family.” Driving home unable to control anything while his family was in danger terrified Chad. “I wasn’t even thinking about my cattle or farm at that point.” The phone line went silent when the tornado tore through the house in only one minute. When they reconnected, Sara went upstairs to find shattered glass around mud-stained windows. She told Chad things weren’t that bad, but she couldn’t see what lay outside the windows of the 100-year-old farmhouse that fared the storm with minor damage. She went back to the basement and waited for Chad for what seemed an eternity. As Chad raced home, he saw a hole between the trees from a mile away. Once he pulled into the debris-lined driveway, he realized the barns were demolished and tractors were toppled.

“It looked like a different place,” he said. “It was surreal, almost like I was in a movie.” The extent of the damage didn’t sink in as he rushed to check on his family. Sara had kept it together for the kids until Chad arrived, and that’s when they all lost it, she said. After Chad comforted his family, he began the journey upstairs to a new life. He went outside to deal with the aftermath, not knowing if he had lost his entire herd. Normally calm, Chad started to panic. “I was outside by myself and nobody knew we got hit yet. I could hear cattle bellowing that were hurt. I didn’t know what to do.” Still, his first thought was the loss of three South Dakota cattlemen killed in a plane crash just two months before. “I remember thinking this isn’t that bad,” he said. “This is just material stuff and we’ll go pick it up.” Sara likened the moments coming out of the basement as reminiscent of being in a war zone. “A horrible smell hung in the air of wet manure and mud. It sounds silly now but I asked Chad if I should call my dad, who lives five hours away, to come help. I called him and said, ‘Everything’s gone.’” He couldn’t grasp what his daughter meant. With only an hour before dark, Chad still didn’t know the extent of the damage. “It looked like every animal was probably dead.” Neighbors began to show up and helped push cattle into different pastures before nightfall, and then the long wait began. “It was probably the longest night of my life,” Chad said. Sara stayed up late watching the weather because another

400 August 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

storm was coming. The rest of the night is still a blur to her.

The Morning Day Breaks

When daylight dawned on the mixed grass prairie, the Thompsons could better assess the destruction. Nature’s fury had taken a direct path through a dry lot of approximately 80 steers scheduled to ship at 8 a.m. The loss at Thompson Show Steers tallied approximately eight steers, two bulls and a couple cows and calves. “We were fortunate. It could have been hundreds,” Chad added. “It was amazing how they got through that when every fence was down and the trees were gone. I don’t know where they went or how they survived it, but they did.” The cattle remained skittish Thursday. Particularly rattled were two A.I. cows locked up in the yard that night. They were found back in the pasture with their calves. The twister also razed four main buildings, the corrals, the family van and camper plus Chad’s horse trailer. Nearly all the equipment lay destroyed by the 127-mph winds. Nonetheless, the most eye-opening moment was the support of others. “It was humbling and truly amazing,” Chad said. “Friends, neighbors, family, other cattlemen and people we didn’t even know … that was the thing that choked me up. People showed up that we never would have met and spent days working. We would still be picking up the rubble if it weren’t for the help. I don’t know if we could ever thank them.” People hundreds of miles away called and texted. Chad said it was so chaotic, he didn’t get to respond to many, but the caring thoughts meant the world to him.

The natural disaster was life changing for Chad, emphasizing the importance of others. “It reminded me that even if somebody else has something small happen, you need to go help. It woke me up to the fact that I want to be the first person there to help.”

Changed Priorities

“We looked at the rebuilding process as an opportunity,” Chad said. Built in the 1930s, the farm needed updates. Chad took time to plan a more efficient, functional system while keeping the future in mind. Equipment and portable corrals were replaced first, which took considerable time. Construction started in January. “We rebuilt so we can get work done faster and spend more time with our family,” he said. “It’s been as long a day as I could keep my eyes open for a year now.” Being away from my family was the hardest, but it wasn’t a choice since things had to be done before calving and weaning. “What made it easier was knowing we’d have a better place with a better setup,” he said. Chad advises other ranchers to reevaluate their insurance company. “Our insurance company was great, but it was a nightmare for a lot of people in town. You need to do your homework and make sure you have the right company behind you.” Several friends lost everything when the EF-2 tornado stayed on the ground for 40 minutes and plowed through the heart of nearby Wessington Springs, leaving 77 homeless. “I almost felt guilty because we still had our house and most of our belongings,” Sara said. Small in size, the community is rebounding since the funnel. “It’s been fun to watch this spring as the community rebuilds,” Sara said. “Before our building started, there were other businesses and homes starting to go up and it was just heartwarming to see progress somewhere, even if it wasn’t at your own place.”

What Matters Most

The children ranged from ages one to seven at the time of the tornado, and were in shock when brought back to the farm after staying nearby for a week. Throughout the healing process, not knowing what was next for her kids was the toughest obstacle for Sara.

They’ve strived to include the boys and make the rebuilding process exciting. “We’ve tried to teach them that when bad things happen, you count your blessings and not your sorrows,” Sara said. “We’re still pretty lucky to have everything. The boys pitch in and are understanding when Dad’s still not home at 10 p.m.” The boys anxiously watch the weather now. Sara has tried to explain how tornadoes work and answer their questions directly. “Sara is the strongest, most amazing woman I know,” Chad said. “I had to go outside and deal with the physical stuff, but getting the kids through it was even tougher. I couldn’t have done it without her,” Chad added. Sara responded, “I’m really proud of Chad and how he has handled all of the stress and exhaustion. You think you know your spouse, but when you go through something like this, the true colors come out.” Chad thinks positively and always remembers it could have been worse. “It changed what we did for a year, but everyone is still here and safe. That was a

blessing,” he said.

Talking about that night still

exposes raw emotions and chokes up the couple. Sara said, “You have to give yourself time through a big life adjustment.” Sara fights on by adding, “We both feel strongly this wasn’t a tragedy. It’s a life event — just a chapter in the book.” Life goes on for this South Dakota family as they continue to rebuild. The wounds are healing. Hugs are stronger. Time spent with family is sweeter. The progress at the day’s end is more satisfying. Storms may come, but the Thompson family digs in and epitomizes the strength and enduring spirit of a farm family who weathered the hard times and survived to see another day.
