MISSOURI Club Calf Association
Missouri Club Calf Association has had a very busy show season. Thank you to all who participated and became a member of the Missouri Club Calf Association. Good luck and congratulations to all those who showed and will be attending the Missouri State Fair. We had an outstanding turnout for our end of the show season awards ceremony, where we had large amounts of prizes, a pizza party and games to recognize the achievements of the MCCA exhibitors. We also gave out one scholarship to a very deserving MCCA member. We have updated the website with all of the points from this show season! Make sure you go check it out and like us on FaceBook for updates! If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, get ahold of a junior board member, or check out our contact page on our website. www.missouriclubcalfassoc.com

The brother-sister duo of Eric and Lizzie Schafer know how to make their hard work pay off with successes, both in and out of the show ring. Their parents, Aaron and Sue Schafer, have raised the young livestock enthusiasts to be well-rounded, showing multiple species of livestock, participating in public speaking, livestock judging and other life skill contests through FFA, 4-H and their junior breed associations. Here’s your chance to learn more about 16-yearold Eric, and 15-year-old Lizzie from Owaneco, Illinois, and what they enjoy doing On & Off the Circuit…
Lizzie Schafer Species and breeds of livestock you show: I show Aberdeen Angus Cattle, Simmental Cattle, and I used to show market lambs.
What is your favorite show and why? My favorite show is the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. I love this show because it brings back so many great memories with friends. What is your favorite show memory and why: My favorite show memory has by far been when I got to work the show ring with Miss American Angus, Keegan Cassady, at the 2017 National Junior Angus Show as an Illinois Angus Princess. Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: My all-time favorite show animal is most definitely Hope. She is a half-blood Simmental with a white baldy head. I had to carve a pumpkin in the shape and color of Hope and post printed off pictures of her all over my dad’s room and truck
320 August 2018 • theshowcircuit.com
to get her; and I have to say, she was definitely worth it! Do you have anything you keep in your show box for good luck or any good luck rituals on show day? I have some 4-leaf clovers that I keep in the show box for show days. Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: My least favorite show-barn activity is most definitely blowing out cattle! What do you like to do outside of the barn/ show ring: Outside of the barn and show ring, I enjoy snapchatting friends, assisting younger kids with their learning, and helping anyone that needs help. Favorite book or author: Insurgent Favorite movie: The Greatest Showman
Favorite food: Air Heads Extremes What are your college or career goals: My college goal is to attend a university where I will judge on the livestock team. I will then transfer to another university where I will get my Dr. degree and go on to help kids with Austism. Do you have a quote or motto you like to follow? If so, what is it? My quote that I like to follow is “Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card, and the way you make other people feel is your trademark.” Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring: Someone that I would like to thank for helping me succeed in the showring is my Grandma Gayle. No matter what she is always there for me cheering me on in the stands and she does whatever she can to help my brother and I be successful.
Species and breeds of livestock you show: Angus and Hereford cattle, Market lambs, and Hogs of all breeds
around in the barn every day and made me want to get up early every morning. She had a great personality and always knew how to put on a show in the ring.
Favorite movie: Hacksawridge
What is your favorite show and why? The National Western Stock Show is my favorite show of the year because it brings so many high-quality cattle to one place and you are able to see the history and the heritage that has brought the livestock industry to where we are today.
Do you have anything you keep in your show box for good luck or any good luck rituals on show day? Nothing really particularly that I keep in my box but I always have one show halter that I make sure to put on my favorite heifer for luck.
What is your favorite show memory and why: Winning reserve champion owned heifer at the 2014 National Junior Angus Show. This is my favorite show memory because it represents months and months of hard work and time put in, in the barn with my family and friends accomplish something I had only dreamed of. It was even more special that the show was so close to home that my whole family was there to see it and share in a very successful and fun week.
Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: I honestly don’t really have a least favorite activity as cliché as that sounds. I love it all, from washing, to fitting, to blowing and love to see the end result of the blood, sweat and tears you put into an animal to get it to the ring.
What are your college or career goals: In the future I’d like to go to college and get a degree in marketing, animal science, or nutrition and hopefully get a masters and a Phd. While in college I hope to participate on the livestock judging team and afterwards hopefully coach a judging team. I would then like to come back to the family farm.
Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: Even though I’ve been blessed with lots of great animals my favorite show animal hands down was my heifer that was reserve at the NJAS in 2014, but she would be my favorite regardless of the wins. Lady Diana was her name and she was just so fun to be
What do you like to do outside of the barn/ show ring: I really like to golf because it really helps me to relax, but by far my favorite activity is livestock judging and even just studying livestock in general whether they be show hogs or just feed lot calves and appreciating them for what they are. Favorite book or author: Veronica Roth
Favorite food: Pizza
Motto you like to follow? Pressure makes diamonds- General George S Patton Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring: This is an extremely hard question for me because there are so many people that have helped me throughout my show career and there is no way I could name them all. From my parents to friends like Andrew Livingston as well as the Zwilling’s and the Anderson family, but I’d really like just to say thank you to everyone that has helped because there are so many great people and friends that I have been blessed with to teach me and guide me throughout my life, thank you.

Jalyn Smith
Jalyn Smith is 12 years old and attends Rosebud Public Schools. Her favorite saying is: "I never lose. Either I win or I learn." Jalyn advises other livestock exhibitors to be confident. She has two hobbies that consist of showing cattle and swimming. When asked what her friends would say about her, her answer was: “They would say that I am obsessed with cattle, a hard worker, caring, passionate about showing cattle, and a child of God.” Jalyn likes exhibiting cattle at AJCA shows because they are centrally located and there are plenty of them, which allows her to get more practice. The people in involved in AJCA, youth and adults, are very helpful. “I have made lifelong friendships with like-minded people,” she says. Jalyn told us that showing cattle allows her

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting
FORAGES OTHER THAN HAY It is turning into another “one of those years.” Because we have had two or three very timely 1-2 inch rains, the corn and soybean crops in my geographic area look great, even though the soil is extremely low in soil moisture. That said, we are one week away from drought conditions without another timely rain. Hay production is another story. First and second cuttings were 1/2 to 2/3 of normal and a repeat of 2017 in terms of forage shortages is very likely.
indirectly may extend the life of a pasture. Soybean hulls (SH) are high in digestible fiber and can provide 78% of the digestible energy of one pound of shelled corn (SC) at one half the cost (3.8¢: lbs. for SH vs 7.6¢: lbs. for SC), or $70: ton for SH vs $3.70: bu. for SC. Soy hulls are very acceptable to cows (they will run to eat SH) and because SH are high in digestible fiber they help maintain rumen forage fermentation efficiency that shelled corn supplementation disrupts.
I have been most fortunate that my pastures have held up well. We were able to quit feeding the cows soy hulls the last week of May. We have rotated and clipped pastures twice and so far the grazing is good. Yesterday (June 20th) we began supplementing the cows with soy hulls again at the rate of 3lbs./cow/day. Supplementing with soy hulls will help extend the pasture grazing life into fall when we will turn the cows onto a hay field for grazing until January.
Another option for cow-calf producers to consider is to harvest corn silage this fall for winter feeding. During my 33 years teaching at ISU, corn silage was the base feed for the beef cow herd. The saying bears repeating “more cows can be fed per acre of feed with corn silage than any other forage.” This is especially true today because today’s 200+ bushel: acre yields result in corn silage (CS) with higher TDN values than the NRC tables suggest.
Many producers will feed-out of hay again this year, so now is the time to plan ahead. I covered several options to replace hay in a cow’s diets in my last article, but I am choosing to address two options to feeding hay in more detail in this article. Sometime in late August or early September, producers should consider aerial seeding cereal rye into standing corn that will either be chopped for silage or harvested early as corn grain. Aerial seeding will allow the rye to germinate and to grow rapidly once the standing corn stalk is removed/knocked down. Cereal rye makes excellent fall grazing, especially in conjunction with grazing corn stalks. As the stalk grazing deteriorates, rye growth provides additional grazing days, and, if managed correctly, may result in early spring grazing or in late spring ryelage harvest. Aerial seeding of rye at 1.5 to 2.0 bushels: acre can result in satisfactory rye stands—if it rains enough.
The tricky question for many cow-calf producers buying corn silage — and corn farmers selling corn silage — is how to price the corn silage. Whether an acre of ground is producing corn that will be harvested as corn silage or as corn grain the cost of production is the same. There may be some difference in harvest cost of corn silage vs. corn grain. An acre yielding 240 bu. SC: acre at 14.5% moisture and $3.70: bu has a value of $888. If harvesting grain costs $34.80 an acre to combine and $6.20 to haul per acre, the harvest cost is $40 per acre and the gross return is $848.00: acre.
Supplementing cows grazing summer pasture with 3 to 4lbs./cow/day of soybean hulls can help maintain cow body condition score, maintain milk production and
corn for corn grain. Therefore, by subtracting the cost for grain harvest the corn farmer shares part of the harvest cost with the cowcalf producer. Chopping standing corn costs $7.05: ton and $11 per linear foot to fill a bag. If 240 bu: ac corn yields 26 tons of CS: acre, the cost to harvest CS is $183.30 and $286 to fill bag with the CS, or $469.30: ac. or $18.05: ton or 9/10 cents: lb. of CS. The corn silage value at $848: acre and 26 ton: ac yield is $32.62: ton or 1.63 cents: lb. Total cost to purchase and store CS is 2.5¢: lb. On a dry matter (DM) basis, at 60% moisture CS costs 6.25 cents: lbs. of DM. Soy hulls at $70: ton costs 3.89 cents: lbs. of DM and at $112.50: ton SH have a similar cost to CS at 6.25 cents: lbs. of DM. The primary problem with feeding CS as the base energy portion of the diet is CS requires protein supplementation i.e. 1-2 lbs. of soybean meal or 4-6 pounds of distillers grain (DGS), depending on the cow’s stage of production. This is why feeding nontraditional forage---- small grain straws, corn stalks etc. supplemented with by-products such as SH or DGS is often the most economical diet for the beef cow. In other words, the grain farmer should realize $848 per acre if the corn is harvested as corn grain. Harvesting an acre of corn for corn silage costs more per acre than harvesting the August 2018 • theshowcircuit.com
