Shed. Grow. Show. Repeat. By Katie Maupin Miller
Even if you’re using all the right products, feeding the right diet and sticking to a near perfect hair care routine, if you’re fighting against their natural hair cycle, you’re likely losing the battle.
I
t’s said to everything there is a season, and cattle hair care is no different. Just like the tides, cattle’s hair growth is cyclical, and the natural ebb and flow of their hide and coat can potentially make or break your show season. Even if you’re using all the right products, feeding the right diet and sticking to a near perfect hair care routine, if you’re fighting against their natural hair cycle, you’re likely losing the battle. We spoke to some cattle care experts to unlock the secrets to a great show day coat, and they all agree it starts with genetic potential and timing. “Hair care is cyclical; in 90 to 120 days, cattle shuck out and start over,” explains Jon Gevelinger of JG Cattle and Coaching. “We try to control that process, but you can actually be growing hair at the wrong time, which will be a detriment to your show day look.” James Sullivan of Sullivan Supply, agrees. Hair care is completely built around your show calendar and season. The Sullivan family starts their hair care routine 100 to 120 days before their biggest shows. After that window, cattle will often completely shed that hair within 45 to 60 days. “It is important to adjust your routine to reflect what shows are your most im-

portant and to land majors shows during that 120- to 160-day window,” Sullivan says. “For example, in the summertime our biggest shows are junior nationals (end of June to early July) and State Fair (mid-August). We want to be hitting our 100-day mark at junior national time, so the hair is starting to hit its peak and looks really fresh. That hair then has hit full potential when state fair comes around.” After state fair, the Sullivans shed their show string and start their hair growth routine again to have their cattle looking their best for the American Royal, NAILE and Denver. The May family, of Wisconsin, has a similar schedule in their barn, which has led them to backdrops around the country. Brock and Lauren cite their sweet spot at 90 days of pre-show hair growth with a similar shed and grow cycle between their targeted shows. A great show day look requires more than the latest supplements and oils, it is built on good genetics, consistent work and an understanding of the natural hair cycle of cattle.
With these tips from experts, you’ll be on your way to show ring success by following these steps – shed, grow, show, repeat.
SHED The shedding phase is often the hardest for most exhibitors, especially those facing the contrast of their cattle’s thick, long, winter hair to their slicker spring/summer coats. “Less hair that is fresh is better than a ton of hair that is dead or stale,” Sullivan says. “In the winter, cattle usually have nice hair coats. Some people like to try and keep that hair in the animal as long as possible, but by the time their spring/summer show comes around it is dull and lifeless. Getting that hair completely shucked out in February and March will allow you to grow back a healthy, shiny hair coat, in the summer, which will make your animal look healthier and fresher, than the one with the 4 inches of dead hair.” One cue it is time for a shed is when cattle’s hair appears dead. Gevelinger uses the example of black cattle. Dead hair on a black steer or heifer looks more like brown fluff
than shiny, healthy hair. Although the idea of getting rid of hair on a show calf can seem intimidating, the May family will tell you one of the main steps to good hair is removing all the dead hair before you try to grow new hair. Gevelinger has a shed routine in place in his barns. His showmen and women will use a shedding comb, like those used on house pets, every day before they rinse their calves. According to Gevelinger, the extra grit of slightly dirty hair makes it easier to comb out dead hair, while any dirt, dandruff or grime on the hide stirred up by the shedder is washed away when the calf is rinsed after. Shedding combs are used on all the body hair, not the legs or tailhead, to remove any old hair. Some people will body clip calves to get their blank slate of fresh hair. Gevelinger avoids this method, unless he’s dealing with a calf that has a patchy or unhealthy coat, such as one with a bad case of ringworm or places where they’ve rubbed hair off. As he explains, clipping a calf to remove dead hair will also remove some new hair, which has already started to grow.

“When the shedding comb stops pulling hair out, that’s when you put it up,” Gevelinger explains. He often sees people overuse the shedding comb, which can damage new, fresh hair that’s coming in. Besides the shedding comb, Gevelinger has a few other tricks up his sleeve to start a “shuck,” as he calls it. These include bringing your calf in a little later, kicking it out a little earlier or penning it in a brighter part of the barn, to trick the calf ’s natural clock into thinking it is experiencing long, summer days. Clipping can also hit the hard reset button on a calf ’s coat. He will often clip faces and rough tops on cattle he’d like to launch into their shed.
GROW The growth phase is often the one that most exhibitors want to spend the most time on. Our experts have agreed, generally speaking, you should be switching your cattle hair care routine to focus on hair growth between 90 to 120 days before your targeted show. Hair growth comes down to limited exposure to sunlight, cooler environments, brushing and rinsing, hair and hide conditioning, hard work and genetics. During the “grow” part of the hair cycle, a showman’s day should start early. Cattle should be brought in before sunrise. In most
392 August 2018 • theshowcircuit.com
barns, this will be between 6-7 a.m. Calves should be stalled in a clean, dry area with thick bedding to avoid any extra stress on their joints. “This is also a good opportunity to feed and water them out of feed pans and water buckets, so it becomes a normal thing for them, so they will eat better at shows,” Sullivan adds. After they’re fed, it’s time for their first rinse or wash, depending on your routine. Steers or heifers will need to be rinsed for a minimum of 10 minutes to lower their body temperature. Any excess water should be removed with the backside of a plastic scotch comb, and the brushing part of your routine now begins. “Brush for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes each side,” Sullivan recommends. “Try not to only focus on one area, and make sure you treat every area of the body like it’s just as important as the others. The belly, flank and tail head are often neglected, and they are as important as anything.” Sullivan brushes hair with a rice root brush at a 45-degree angle toward the calf ’s ear to stimulate hair growth and train new hair. Gevelinger uses several brushes during the hair growth stage. Right after retiring the shedding comb, he reaches for mini wide range or mini 360 brush to start growing
hair. These brushes, with bristles like women’s hair brushes, are able to easily comb underneath the slicker, often courser summer hair, and the shape of the comb then pops the hair upwards to allow space for the fluffier undercoat to begin to grow. This is Gevelinger’s go-to, until he starts to notice that the brush is getting harder to comb through the hair. Then, he switches to a plastic fluffer comb. Often, after the first 30 to 40 days. After the cattle have been brushed, they need to be blown dry. Sullivan’s rule of thumb is once you think your calf is dry, blow them out for 15 more minutes. “If you leave your animal wet, not only will that hair turn wavy and be lesser quality than the dried hair, but it will also warm up with the animal’s body creating humidity, which will make your animal warmer,” he says. The May family’s No. 1 cattle hair concern is hair and hide health, mainly preventing dander, and fellow Weaver Livestock representative Gevelinger agrees that dandruff is public enemy No. 1 of a good hair coat. “The only way to get the dandruff out is with a blower and physically pop it out of there,” he says. “You don’t need to panic, but
you dang sure need to get the dander off of there.” Once any dander is brushed and blown out of the hair coat, it can be prevented by applying oils and conditioners to the calf ’s coat. (See the sidebar for our expert’s top product picks.) Heavier oils can trap heat, so they should only be used in the winter, on cooler days or in the morning if your calf is in a heat-controlled environment. Anytime your steer or heifer is subjected to warmer weather, lighter oils should be used as your main conditioner. This brushing and rinsing routine is ideally repeated around two more times that day – around noon and 5 p.m. – before the calves are kicked outside after sundown, typically after 9 p.m. All of the experts agree that nighttime turnout is non-negotiable for successful show calves. Cattle need turn out time to properly stretch their joints to maintain soundness, and the extra exercise keeps cattle healthy and happy. You may have noticed Step 1 to hair growth wasn’t buying a cool room. In fact, none of our experts feel that they’re a necessity. Gevelinger keeps calves in barns with cool cells. These drop the temperature about 20 degrees, which keeps nighttime turnout in the Southwest from being a dramatic temperature change. The Sullivan family’s original show barn was set up with misters that ran on timers. Each blast of mist would give their calves a cool shock, like jumping in a pool on a hot day. Misters that run continuously tend to make barns humid and cattle hot, as the water begins to trap heat like an insulator.
Whether you’re showing a steer at a Midwest county fair or a slick steer in Houston, the work you put into your calf ’s hair and hide health will be very visible. Regardless, of how well you can pull a leg, you have to have a great coat to start, so the “show” stage is a pretty quick one. There is one thing to keep in mind when preparing for a show, clipping can sometimes affect your “grow.” “In the winter months, you may clip a calf for a show one weekend and need to touch them up before they go in the ring the next weekend. But in the summer months, the hair tends to grow slower allowing the clip job to last a lot longer,” May explains. “We also have learned that clipping in the summer can promote hair loss. We wait as long as possible to clip them, in fear of them losing their hair before show day.”
REPEAT Just like that, your months of work and toil to get the perfect hair has come to an end. You’ve shown your calf at its peak of freshness and hide health; now just like the seasons, it’s time to start over. Repetition may be the key to great hair all along. “The most important hair care tip is consistency. If you make a solid routine and stick with it consistently day-after-day, you will see results,” Sullivan says. “Some people will do everything correct one day, and the next day do about half the effort but expect to see the same results, and that’s not the case in growing hair, or in life in general.”

“We do not keep our heifers in a cooler room to grow hair,” May says. “They are in a barn with fans and rinsed twice a day.” During the winter, you likely won’t even have to bring your calves in at all during the day. They can stay outside, as long as they have fresh water, deep, dry bedding and shelter. Of course, you should still brush and work their hair daily though.
SHOW Now that moment you’ve been waiting for – the show – is finally here. Believe it or not, the results you see in the ring likely aren’t due to any fitting product you spray on your steer or heifer today, but rather a culmination of months of hard work and your calf ’s natural hair cycle.

1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE BUSINESS AND HOW DID YOU GET IN THIS PARTICULAR PART OF THE CATTLE INDUSTRY?
Honestly, I can’t remember a time in my life when cattle were not around. Back when I was 3 or 4 years old, I would be checking cows for heat, sitting on the fence with my dad, and finding an empty bread sack in the kitchen for my AI glove at home telling mom, “I was going to be like dad and raise cows.”
names of family & employees:

years in cattle business: 22 years
From the age of 8, I started showing steers at the county fair. As the years progressed, we switched to showing heifers only. My goal every year was to have calves better than the year before, and by the time I made it through high school, the quality had come a long way from that steer I showed at 8 years old. Better yet, the heifers I showed are now well into production serving as the foundation of our program today. I sold a few calves we raised privately in high school and started to establish a few customers, but our operation didn’t really take off until my senior year, when I assembled a set of calves with Devin Olson for our first private treaty fall sale. From that fall on, I knew selling calves to junior exhibitors and sharing the knowledge I had acquired over my show career with those youth exhibitors is exactly what I wanted to do!
2. WHO DOES WHAT AROUND MINNAERT CATTLE?
The first place I’d like to start is behind the scenes with the people everyone doesn’t necessarily see and know about. That would be my parents and everything they do for me. Both of my parents have a full-time job, but Jay is at the farm every morning and, as soon as he gets off work every night, checking herd health and assisting with chores anyway he can – especially when I’m on the road. If it wasn’t for him, I’d be broken down half the time since I can’t seem to fix anything. He always gets me back up and running. Julie isn’t on the farm much with the cattle, but I’d be lost without her. She makes the world go around with all the paperwork, accounting and trying to keep me organized. The thing I appreciate the most is knowing the crew and I can always count on a great home-cooked meal every Sunday at noon. The support and advice they have given me over the years goes unmatched! I’ve also been blessed to be located only 25 minutes away from Black Hawk College East Campus and, over the years, I’ve had the best barn help imaginable. The new friends I’ve made and the young talent I’ve seen come through this barn in Atkinson, Illinois, over the years is simply unbelievable. Without their help, the volume of calves we break, clip and sell would not be possible. Starting this fall, we are excited to have Zane Ward joining the Minnaert team full time as the show barn manager. His knowledge and eye for evaluating cattle, not to mention his great clipping and fitting talent, has me confident and excited for his future here. We are hopeful his abilities will help us take our program to the next level.
MINNAeRT
As for me, when people ask what I do my response is, “Whatever it takes!” I assist on the operation wherever I’m needed. I take pride in customer service, and value days where I’m just on the phone aiding customers with daily care questions, talking cattle and discussing sire selection for the upcoming year. One thing is for certain – it takes a small army to make this operation work and I couldn’t be more thankful for all the hard work everyone does around here!
3. what is the makeup of your herd and where are you headed with it in the future? Quality is always valuable and as we have built our cow herd, that is all I have ever focused on. So with that said, there’s a little of everything running around our operation. The core of the herd is Angus, Chi, Maine and Simmental, with the occasional Charolais and Shorthorn. Breeds aside, they all have the same traits of great structure, strong maternal characteristics, body and a quality look. In addition to those things, I also am one who prefers added size, power and hair when and where I can get it. What I like most about having a diverse group of cows is we have something for everyone. This is a program built on cow power and we take pride in the calves we sell, knowing they are backed by phenomenal cow families.
4. WHEN SOMEBODY VISITS YOUR PLACE, ARE THERE PARTICULAR ANIMALS YOU ALWAYS SHOW THEM?
I enjoy giving tours of the farm and the cattle we are offering for sale, but there is one cow on the farm that’s not for sale. She goes by the name “Katie.” She is one of the most impressive mature donors you will ever lay your eyes on ,and I think those of you who have seen her will agree. Katie is the cornerstone of this operation even at the age of 12. This one cow has single handedly given me the opportunity to do what I love for a living. Year after year, producing high sellers, champions and several promotional sires such as Hard Whiskey, Hybrid, Crowd Pleaser and Class on Class. Katie has made her mark and is the pride and joy of this operation with numerous daughters in production. If she’s not away getting flushed, she is a must see on a visit.
5. WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART OF WHAT YOU DO? I think one of the biggest challenges of being a breeding is reminding yourself on breeding day that you’re not breeding for what the business wants today, but what the business wants two years from now when that animal will be in the showring. The challenge of trying to be one step in front of everyone else and not just replicating last year’s success, but striving to always make them better. Also, we face the same August 2018 • theshowcircuit.com

challenges as everyone else in the livestock industry relating to Mother Nature, and being reminded that we just have no control over thing like excessive heat, grass shortages, freezing cold weather and knee deep mud that make some days more difficult than others.
6. WHAT’S THE MOST ENJOYABLE PART OF WHAT YOU DO?
What I enjoy the most is getting to work with so many good people, and this business is full of them. This business has allowed me to travel more than I ever dreamed possible. From traveling the back-country roads in search of the next great one, to hooking up the truck and trailer and going showing at the countries biggest shows like Kansas City, Louisville and Denver – I just can’t get enough. I always tell people that if wealth was measured in memories made, I’d be the richest person you knew. The stories and memories I’ve made with friends, family and customers over the years are priceless!
7. IF YOU WON A MILLION-DOLLAR LOTTERY, BUT HAD TO SPEND IT ON YOUR OPERATION, WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND MOST OF THE MONEY ON?
That’s an easy one for me! I’d use the money to purchase as much land as it can buy me. Pasture ground and a place to house the cattle is our most limiting factor, especially where we are located. It’s almost all corn and bean ground, and pasture is extremely hard to come by around here. My goal is to continue to grow the operation in the future and more ground would be a huge help.
8. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHANGE YOU HAVE SEEN IN THE CLUB CALF/SHOW CATTLE INDUSTRY? I think the way the cattle are marketed has changed the most since I started in the business. With the new era of online sales, we’ve been able to go from selling 30 to 40 calves a year, all in a small radius, to over 100 calves across the country. The last couple years we’ve sold and marketed a large majority of our offering on SC Online and we’ve been able to sell our show prospects and genetics all over the country with great success, generating champions from coast to coast with new customers and breeders that I don’t think we could have met otherwise.

9. HOW DO YOU THINK THE BUSINESS WILL LOOK IN 10 YEARS, 15 YEARS?
As we look into the future 10 to 15 years from now, I’m sure the next generation with be faced with new challenges as every generation has over the years. But, as always, we will adjust and adapt to meet consumer demand. I have hopes that the number of junior exhibitors will increase over the next decade as I think parents can see value in life lessons, work ethic, teamwork and leadership qualities their childen gain from showing livestock for their future long after their show careers are over. However, I fear that the large investment required to be competitive in the industry may leave us with fewer breeders. The types and kinds of cattle will continue to change over the years as it always has. I just hope we make the changes that best suit the consumer and that the breeding cattle we select in the show ring are also the kind that are most useful and productive for ranchers and cattleman in the pasture. I think over the next several years, we may breed females with more power and mass than current day, as I feel we have single-trait selected for body and depth and lost value as muscle. Purebred cattle will always have value in the business, but the hybrid advantage we see in percentage and composite cattle will continue to combine the strength of various breeds into one package and always up shift our trait selection with the times. I’m excited about the future and can’t wait to see where this great industry will take us next!
Katie is the cornerstone of this operation even at the age of 12.

Lots of Genetic Opportunity Remains By Wes Ishmael
Peruse the genetic evaluation of any widely-used beef breed today. Genetic progress over time, for some traits, is nothing short of remarkable. Seedstock producers continue to expand potential in some areas, while bending relationships between genetically antagonistic traits to a degree few would have thought possible just a few decades ago. For instance, if you want low birth weights and moderate cow size accompanied by vast weaning and yearling growth potential, the genetics are there. If you’re after more marbling, but want to maintain carcass yield, the genetics are available. Genomics are adding to the reliabil-

ity of genetic evaluation, especially of young cattle, while a proliferation of economic indexes are making it easier to consider multiple traits all at once. That’s the good news. “Sadly, the current status of most national and international beef cattle evaluation systems reflects a narrow, data-driven approach to choosing traits on which to focus selection,” says Dorian Garrick, professor and chief scientist at New Zealand’s Massey University. That’s from comments he made at the recent annual convention of the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF). “Bull breeders and bull buyers tend to focus more on attributes that they
can easily visualize or measure, such as growth rate or calving ease, and less on attributes that are less visible in their production systems, such as feed intake during grazing, eating quality of the final product and disease resistance,” Garrick says. “Further, they tend to focus more on traits with moderate to high rather than low heritability, and those measured early rather than late in life, as they can easily validate the effects of their selection choices within their own production systems.” None of that is to deprecate the progress made in the easily visualized and measurable traits. It is to say those traits provide an incomplete picture of potential return, relative to the cost of
production. “Much of the selection that has occurred over the past 50 years has been driven by traits for which data collection was relatively easy. This does not diminish the importance of those traits but does constrain the selection program,” says John Pollak, professor emeritus at Cornell University and the former director of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. He’s commonly regarded as one of the animal-breeder superstars that helped the industry get so far down the road of genetic evaluation. He also addressed the BIF gathering. Garrick characterizes a more comprehensive approach as bio-economics driven. Think here of collecting phenotypes and developing measures for everything that impacts cost and profitability related to the system in which the genetics are employed. “There is a logical approach to developing a breeding program that includes thorough biological and economic considerations of the traits to consider,” Garrick explains. “The first step is the formulation of the goal of the breeding program. That would normally reflect some measure of increasing satisfaction—and in an agricultural context, profitability is usually a major determinant of satisfaction… “The second step in developing a breeding
program is to define the breeding objective. This involves two components— the list of traits that influence the goal, and the relative emphasis to be placed on each of those traits. A profit-based goal should consider every trait that influences any component of whole-system income, or any component of whole-system cost.” Yep, that’s a tall order and helps explain the industry’s preoccupation with the easily visualized and measureable. It also underscores potential opportunity.
Garrick believes traits that are adequately considered currently are growth and calving ease. Everything else needs more consideration. “Namely, there is inadequate consideration of reproduction, inadequate consideration of eating quality, inadequate consideration of the human healthfulness of the beef, inadequate consideration of disease resistance,
inadequate consideration of feed intake and feed efficiency, inadequate consideration of lifetime performance, inadequate consideration of welfare traits such as horns, and inadequate consideration of environmental attributes such as water use, greenhouse gas emissions, or levels of effluent, particularly Nitrogen outputs. All these characteristics exhibit phenotypic variation, and all are heritable, so could be included in breeding programs,” Garrick says. As vexing, even if measured, all have different values to different producers. “The beef industry is not one large integrated operation but rather is comprised of a multitude of independent businesses,” Pollak emphasizes. “There will naturally be variation in the emphasis of traits under selection. It is also recognized that, given most seedstock are sold to commercial operations within a limited radius of the seedstock operation, certain traits will be more important in some geographical regions then others. “Fescue tolerance, heat or cold stress tolerance, and high-altitude tolerance are some examples of traits that would need to be emphasized di¬fferently in their respected regions. This does not distract from having a comprehensive breeding objective with a more complete portfolio of traits but rather place emphasis on the economic values
of those traits when being selected within individual programs.” Heretofore, by necessity, genetic evaluation has focused primarily on entire breed populations. “The value of a sire or dam to create more profitable progeny can only be effectively determined by collecting data in the system or environment in which they will be used,” said Matthew Cleveland, at the BIF meeting. He is director of global beef product development for Genus ABS. “One solution to this challenge is to reduce the emphasis on developing somewhat compromised solutions that will work across the whole industry and instead focus on improving individual systems where targeted genetic improvement can have a more rapid impact, and where there is a clear incentive to collect data.” The growing number of commercial producers conducting in-herd genetic evaluations serve as an example. They are developing selection indexes that matter most to their operation, relative to the resources, collecting the necessary phenotypic data and creating EPDs for the cows in their herd. Exploiting what’s available In the meantime, there is still lowhanging fruit left un-harvested by many, which gets at some of the harder-tomeasure traits. Consider reproduction. “Due to the low heritability of most reproductive traits, many producers feel there is little that can be done through genetic management and rely solely on other management practices such as health programs and nutrition management,” says Darrh Bullock, Extension beef cattle geneticist at the University of
418 August 2018 • theshowcircuit.com
Kentucky. In an insightful factsheet about reproduction you can find via the ebeef.org website, Bullock explains available EPDs for reproductive traits can provide valuable, albeit limited improvement. Depending on the breed, various reproductive EPDs currently include traits such as heifer pregnancy and cow stayability. Bullock emphasizes EPDs developed in breeds that require whole-herd reporting offer more reliability. But, there’s a faster, more effective way to improve reproduction, of course. “The single best genetic management tool available for improved reproduction in commercial beef operations is crossbreeding,” Bullock says. “Heterosis has the greatest impact on lowly heritable traits, such as reproduction… The influence of individual heterosis on reproductive traits is improved live births and survival to weaning. Maternal heterosis positively impacts reproductive traits such as conception rate, live births and survival to weaning, along with other important economic traits.” Keep in mind, he’s talking about deliberate, planned, complementary crossbreeding. “Traits such as reproduction and longevity have low heritability,” says, Alison Van Eenennaam, Extension animal genomics and biotechnology specialist at the University of California, in a crossbreeding factsheet available via the same site. “These traits usually respond very slowly to selection since a large portion of the variation observed in them is due to environmental factors and nonadditive genetic effects, and a small percentage is due to additive genetic differences…
“Crossbreeding has been shown to be an efficient method to improve reproductive efficiency and productivity in beef cattle. The greatest impacts on profitability from heterosis are the increases in overall production and the longevity of crossbred cows.” Van Eenennaam stresses that producers exploring specific crossbreeding systems need to consider logistics, costs, benefits and feasibility, relative to their own resources, environment and marketing.
