After two different sports related injuries, it was then Kallee realized what she wanted to do with her life. Kallee has been active showing livestock at county, district and state fairs. Kallee is described by her teachers as having an endless curiosity to learn combined with a willingness to take risks. This will allow her to grow and achieve in both college and adulthood. Kallee can often be found working at the family business, a farm feed store in Glenwood. Connor Miller will attend Arkansas Northeastern College where he will earn a welding certification. He will continue his involvement on his family farm as a fifth generation farmer. Connor is the son of Gordon and Missi Miller. Connor says “It is an awesome feeling you get when you work extremely hard with a calf and receive positive feedback in the show ring. It’s the best feeling in the world. Connor says his involvement in AJCA has taught him responsibility, to take pride in his work and that perseverance pays off. Connor is active on his FFA show team. In FFA he has held the offices of secretary and two terms as vice-president where he has learned extensive leadership skills. Connor is also actively involved in his school’s basketball program serving as team manager. Connors best memory of showing livestock was at the North American International Livestock Exhibition in Louisville, Kentucky. He says this quote holds lots of truth, “Show calves leave hoof prints on your heart.”
Cole Umberson is the son of Jason and Tonya Umberson. He will attend Eastern Oklahoma State College with a goal of transferring to the University of Arkansas to earn a degree in poultry nutrition. Cole has worked with his local Farm Bureau to serve as a presenter with the Ag in the Classroom program that teaches elementary students where their food comes from and the importance of agriculture. Cole is an active leader in his local FFA chapter where is currently serving as his chapter president. His chapter Poultry Career Development Team won state and earned 2nd place in the nation. Cole describes his involvement in AJCA as a great opportunity to show, learn, and meet new friends and network with cattle breeders while exhibiting cattle as being very beneficial to his future. Blaire Wildy is the daughter of Justin and Kristi Wildy. Blaire will attend Arkansas State University in Jonesboro where she will study agriculture business and public relations. Blaire has served on the board of AJCA as an area vice president, president-elect and president. Blaire has chaired many AJCA committees that have included Super Saturday, the AJCA awards program, Arkansas State Fair Spring Show and fundraising. Blaire says, “AJCA has pushed me to become the leader I am today.” Five years ago if you would have told me I would be headed to college to major in agriculture, I would have told you that you were crazy! That all changed when I joined FFA and got my first steer and heifer project!” Blaire plays basketball and this year she has served her school student council president.
AJCA scholarships are made available through generous association sponsors, AJCA fundraising activities, AJCA sanctioning fees and membership dues. For more information about AJCA, please go to www.ajcattle.com.

Let’s Get Critical About the Umbilical As calving season is coming to a close, it is that time of year that we get endless complaints about swollen navels. Common complaints include that of thickened stalks, discharge from the navels, abscesses and hernias. In this month’s article, we will discuss the anatomy of these common defects as well as causes and treatment options.
Umbilical anatomy When we, as veterinarians, receive a complaint involving the umbilicus, it is important that we understand the umbilical anatomy and the structures present in the umbilical cord. In utero, the umbilical cord acts as the main entrance and exit of blood from fetus. The umbilical cord contains one vein that carries oxygenated blood to the heart, two arteries that carries deoxygenated blood away from the fetal heart and a portion of the urachus, or fetal bladder. The umbilical vein attaches to the liver and shunts blood from the heart to the aorta. From here, the blood travels from the aorta to the umbilical arteries which is brought back into maternal circulation. When the calf is born, the umbilical cord breaks and causes these structures to close and eventually regress. The umbilical vein becomes the round ligament of the liver and the arterial remnants become the lateral ligaments of the bladder. With that being said, the umbilical cord breaking too closely to the body wall may cause these structures to not fully regress and can lead to a problem involving the navel, which we will discuss later in this article. Umbilical hernias Umbilical hernias are the most common congenital defect in cattle, especially within the Holstein breed. This is caused by failure of the umbilical ring to close; resulting in the protrusion of abdominal contents through the body wall, including omentum, which can result in adhesions if left untreated. This condition is usually diagnosed by visual inspection and palpation of a reducible mass. Ultrasound examination can be used to help identify any portions of the gastrointestinal tract found in the hernia sack and may help differentiate that of a potential abscess. However, ultrasound may be less accurate and not

always indicate the presence or absence of an infection based on depth of the ultrasound. Depending on the size of the hernia ring, these conditions may heal on their own. However, calves with this condition are at risk of developing a strangulation hernia that can entrap portions of the gastrointestinal tract or twisted jejunal loops. Animals with this condition have a poor prognosis due to compromised blood supply to the intestines. In this situation, we suggest diagnosis and intervention be performed as soon as possible. Surgical correction involves dissecting into the hernia sac to identify any complications of strictures or compromise of the gastrointestinal tract. Once in the hernia ring, the body wall is inspected for any signs of existing umbilical structures using digital palpation. Conservative treatment is possible, however, re-herniation is common. Thus, surgical correction is the preferred method of treatment. It is important to note that this surgery is a very serious procedure. The hair must be clipped around the surgical area to improve sterility and decrease the chances of potential contamination. The size of the hernia and surgeon’s preference determines the amount of hair that is clipped. Hair will always grow back. Do not let the illusion of hair compromise surgical techniques. Being attentive early of umbilical issues will allow quicker resolution and time for sufficient hair growth. Umbilical stalks (abscesses) When discussing umbilical stalks, we are describing a variable-sized thickening of the umbilical remnant. This also could potentially fall in the realm of an umbilical abscess involving that of the arteries, vein, and urachus as discussed previously. These conditions are usually caused by poor umbilical care soon after birth. The cord may have
been cut to close to the body wall or may have inoculated bacteria from a poor calving environment. Either way, proper hygiene and cord care, such as dipping, should be practiced in any calving facility. The umbilical stalk is diagnosed using palpation, and, to further investigate the structures involved or an abscess, ultrasound can be used as well as a needle aspirate. Abscesses can be palpated as a walled off fluctuant masses with or without a drainage tract. Determining if there is an abscess present is critical during surgery so infected material does not enter the abdominal cavity. During surgery, the origin of the abscess can be found using digital palpation. A small incision is made into the body wall cranial to the stalk and a finger is inserted to determine if the umbilical artery, vein, or urachus is potentially involved. For all surgery involving umbilical remnants, the surgeon must be prepared to extend the incision. When dealing with umbilical remnant masses, the urachus is the most frequently infected remnant. Calves may be seen dribbling urine. This condition is seen commonly the Brahman breed and often goes undiagnosed. In severe cases, the bladder could potentially ruputure. During surgery, once the location of the remnant is localized, the incision is extended towards the bladder. Once the urachal remnant is found, it is ligated using an absorbable suture and removed. It is possible that the urachus may still be attached to the apex of the bladder. If this is the case, the urachus is dissected away from the bladder leaving the interior of the bladder exposed. The bladder then must be sutured closed to prevent any leaking of urine into the body cavity. An Infection of the umbilical vein is called a omalophlebitis. The infection may extend the en-

It is carried to the heart where it is shunted through the foramen ovale (6) to the ductus arteriosus (4) then into the aorta (3). The aorta carries the blood to the umbilical arteries (13).

tire length of the vein and may potentially involve the liver. This condition can result in abscesses of the liver or septicemia leading to poor doing, sick calves. Umbilical vein abscesses without liver involvement are treated by ligating the vessel using an absorbable suture. If the liver is involved, a marsupilization technique is performed. This technique involves rerouting the vein to exit outside the body cavity by suturing the vessel to the body wall. Although this procedure sounds excessive and may not be cosmetically appealing, the vein and the body wall will eventually heal over with no apparent scar. We have used this technique in show calves and have a had an extremely high success rate.
Pre-treating animals with antibiotics before surgery is ideal to limit potential complications. This will help limit the size of larger abscesses. Once antibiotics are on board, surgery can be initiated. With simple stalks, the stalks can be removed with minimal surgical technique. If an umbilical structure is involved, the structures are carefully dissected and traced to the area of origin. Once the surgery is complete, the calf should remain on antibiotics for 7 to 10 days depending on the type and severity of the defect.
Omphaloarteritis, or infection the umbilical arteries, is the least common infection of the umbilical remnant as the arteries retract into the abdomen after birth. Either one or both arteries can be infected. This condition is likely to involve the omentum being adhered to the umbilicial
True abdominal hernias True abdominal hernias are classified as defects in the body wall located behind the navel. This has been seen more commonly in show cattle and is considered a congenital condition. Animals are usually identified by having a reducible mass

behind the navel that is variable in size. An ultrasound exam can be used to identify if strangulated bowel is protruding through the abdominal wall. This condition is only treated surgically. However, the risk of reherniation is more significant in these types of cases and some animals require a second surgery. If hernias are larger than 15 cm or require a second surgery, a mesh hernorrhaphy may be a potential option. This procedure involves using a mesh graft to increase the tensile strength of the body wall. In conclusion, umbilical issues need to be identified quickly and medical / surgical resolution should be initiated. The conditions that we have discussed can also occur in combinations. Calves’ navels should be inspected and maintained at birth to prevent further issues. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for giving your calf the best prognosis and for limiting the chance of potential complications that can affect your calf’s growth and potential success.

Turn-Key Construction Know What It Means So, you have made the decision to build a new confinement building. You have decided on a building design and the salesperson says the company will do turn-key construction. Sounds great. To you that sounds like all you have to do is write one check, then start feeding livestock in the new facility. But ‌ wait one minute, the definition of turn-key construction to you and to the salesperson may not mean the same thing.
PROFESSOR TO PRODUCER By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting
F
or the purpose of this article, turn-key is defined as “the producer paying one price for a livestock facility that is ready for operation as soon as construction is complete.” Too often producers who have purchased turn-key construction have learned of additional costs that must be paid after construction is finished and the salesperson is long gone. In order to prevent this situation from occurring there are several components of turn-key construction that must be identified.

suggest producers contract with a professional consultant/ environmental engineer company. The paper work and forms can be onerous at times and many producers do not have the time and in some cases, knowledge to commit to the permitting process. Nutrient Management Plans (NMP) should be considered an important component of any livestock building. Manure handling may or may not be a required component of the permitting process. Regardless of state requirements, a well-developed manure management plan should be considered an essential part of any livestock building process. If EQIP funding is involved a NMP is an essential requirement of the project protocol. The phrase “the devil is in the details” especially applies to turn-key construction when subcontractors are involved. To many sales companies, turn-key construction implies they will build the building and coordinate the work of the subcontractors. Coordinating the work of subcontractors is often not synonymous with overseeing the quality of the work. Many building companies will coordinate the work of the subcontractors the producer hires or recommends to the building company, but compensation for the subcontractors and inspection of the work quality is the responsibility of the producer, not the building company.
In reality “turn-key” construction is a

misnomer. For most turn-key construc-

Producer/Sales Co.
Before construction begins, the producer must identify the type of building desired, the size of the building required and the functionality aspects of the building. A knowledgeable salesperson can be of great benefit in assisting a producer during this decision making process. Regardless of where a building is sited some type of construction permit(s) will be required, whether it is on a county (Zoning Board), state (Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources, etc.) or national (NRCS, NPDES, EPA, etc.) level. Producers can complete this permitting process themselves with minimal assistance from the building company technical representatives and/or extension educators, but I
the building company as the construction manager or coordinator. A frank discussion with the building company prior to the signing of any contact regarding the construction components listed in Table 1 can prevent misunderstandings during the construction phase. Knowing who pays for what and who is responsible for oversight of which component will help make all involved with the process pleased with the outcome. Member Name: ____________________________ Address: ______________________________ City: ________________ Wow! What a great Beef Expo show we had, from the showmanship competition Friday night, steer show Saturday, awards banquet Saturday night and the heifer show Sunday. I would like to congratulate all of the participants on a job well done. I also would like to thank all of our sponsors again for without you this show and our year end awards would not be possible. Thank you to Purina, Supreme Trailer sales, Cimarron Trailers, Cinch, Cruel Girl, Sullivan Supply, Supreme Show Supply, and Jobe’s Show Supply, to name a few. I would also like to thank the many volunteers that help behind the scenes to make this show happen and a very special thank you to Rhonda Elizondo for all of her hard work putting our YearEnd Awards Banquet together. The OCCA board is very excited to announce that Ms. Adrienne Bethel has been hired as executive secretary for our association. She will be keeping points, updating the website, taking care of memberships, and will be working on increasing our presence on social media just to name a few of her responsibilities. We look forward to working with Adrienne going forward. I know we have a lot of our members gearing up to head to their respective junior national shows this summer. On behalf of the OCCA Board of Directors, I say good luck and safe travels to all. Remember “IT ALL STARTS BEFORE SUNRISE”

EYES IN THE SKY
What if you could fly a drone over the calving pasture to check on that first-calf heifer instead of spooking her with the pickup? Or how about checking heat or looking for lost yearlings from the sky instead of horseback? As drone technology improves, their use in agricultural operations is expanding into all kinds of ways that can save a producer time and money. By Lindsay Allen

t’s hard to talk about the future of agriculture without talking about technology. As unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones as they are more commonly referred to, continue to gain popularity and capability, those in the cattle business have the opportunity to use this technology to their advantage. The U.S.-based Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International predicts that agricultural uses will eventually account for 80 percent of the commercial market for drones. The numerous uses of drones in agriculture allow farmers and ranchers to make better management decisions and increase productivity. “Unmanned aerial vehicles, or drone technology, is in its infancy, so new uses are only as limited as one’s imagination.
For beef producers, examples could include counting cattle, watching herding habits, checking on fences and for rustlers, locating and identifying weeds to be sprayed, monitoring calving and heat synchronization, checking for sick animals and feed intake, scouting rough terrain areas inaccessible by vehicles, and biosecurity,” according to Bob Schultheis, natural resource engineering specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Drones really can be used in all areas of the industry. Take for instance Penny Bowie, owner of Omni Advertising and Graphics Inc. of Newnan, Georgia, who purchased a drone that is used in her cattle advertising and her real estate sales with
The Auction Way Company. Bowie has owned her drone for over two years now after waiting for one to be released that had the high-quality camera she desired. “When I was originally looking to purchase a UAV, I found that the camera quality was not very high end. However, when the Inspire 1 was released, with 4K video capability, I immediately purchased it,” said Bowie. She went on to say that when she arrives at a ranch to take photographs, which are best to do at the first and last part of the day, she is often left with down time. Fortunately, the best time to fly a drone is in the middle of the day, so Bowie is able to capture footage of the ranch and cattle at an aerial level now on her photography shoots. “I can add these aerial photographs and videos to the client’s website now and provide a different perspective from an advertising and marketing standpoint. I have not had anyone disappointed yet with the images,” Bowie commented. She does hope that as the capabilities and controls of drones continues to progress that the noise level will decrease with the improvements. “They sound like a weedeater, so when you get close to cattle they will scatter and run away. Currently there are only wide angle lenses available for the drone, which means you have to be pretty close to the herd to capture your footage and the closer the drone gets, the more suspicious and nervous the cattle become and then they flee,” she said. Bowie is anxiously awaiting a drone with a zoom lens that will allow her to capture videos and photographs for a longer period of time without bothering cattle. She notes that she flies her drone so often that her personal cattle have become used to it. Lori Duncan, row crop sustainability specialist, with the University of Tennessee Extension said that while “there are many applications for drone use, the most useful, basic applications that come to mind are those that remove a person from actually
going into the field.” Drones act as an extra pair of eyes for producers. Allowing visibility into areas that perhaps producers cannot access easily and allow producers to conduct cattle and land mangement checks from afar.
Thermal technology goes beyond vision by allowing a producer to monitor livestock temperature and even warn the producer of declining health before actual symptoms appear according to Duncan. David Melde of Hamilton, Texas, has been using his drone to watch and trap predators on his cattle and farming operation. “I use my drone to hover over and watch the wild hogs on our property. I track them with the drone and follow them to the brush where they hide. I have also used it to follow coyotes and was able to get one coyote that was three-quarters of a mile away from me to turn around because of the drone and I do believe that if I had a shooter with me, I could have kept bringing that coyote my direction with the drone and eliminated him,” Melde said. Quick to point the potential of drones, Melde is also excited to use his drone this summer for the first time to fly over his crop and check for holes and insect damage. He also adds that his 70-year-old neighbor recently invested in a drone and during calving season was able to fly over his pastures and find missing cows verses driving around in their rough terrain. The same goes for Don and Wendy Denny, who raise registered Angus cattle and run commercial Angus cattle in Paducah, Texas. They are still figuring out the many ways to use the drone on their ranch. “We bought it mainly for our commercial operation as we see the impact and helpfulness it could provide when checking cows and especially those calving,” Wendy said. Don added that they are excited for the “Follow Me” feature on their drone that allows the user to push a button and if you are on horseback, walking, driving, or whatever it may be, the drone will follow and stay within 20 feet of the user and then you can push another button telling the drone to go to wherever you have programmed home. While Schultheis recognizes that the possibilities are limitless, especially with add-on lenses to the camera, thermal imaging (infrared) and hyperspectral lenses that can monitor crop growth and do plant identification and LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) which can measure plant height and do 3D terrain mapping, he says the question will be whether agricultural producers want to learn this technology themselves, or pay for the services of a company that can do it for them. “Just collecting the images and data won’t pay the bills. This data will need to be analyzed and the results put into practice to make the farm and ranch more productive and efficient,” Schultheis said. If producers chose to fly the drones themselves, the process of learning to do so is relatively easily. When Bowie purchased her drone, she mentioned to the seller that she hadn’t a clue how to operate it. “He had me come out back and watch him fly it. He took it to the right and to the left, then handed me the controller and told me to do the same. That was my crash course. However, the same day I received my drone, I found out about and enrolled in a three-day school to learn more about flying a drone and I had to pass written and flying tests,” Bowie said, who is now FLYSAFE certified following the school, has registered her drone with the FAA.

While you may be able to teach yourself how to fly a drone within the first 15 minutes, Bowie recommends learning the rules of owning and flying a drone, whether in a school or on your own. “Once I received my certification license, my classmates and myself had a company seeking to hire us to fly over crops in South Florida. Of course, this meant another day of school and new technology to learn as it was a different type of aircraft, but the possibility of flying drones for a living exists,” Bowie added. Schultheis said, “Most people who fly drones have little aviation experience. But they become pilots as soon as they start to fly the devices, and must accept all the responsibilities for safety that a pilot of a regular manned aircraft does, including the preflight checks. You have to operate a UAV like you are piloting a real plane. It’s not something where you are going to be able to buy one and just start using it.” There are numerous rules and regulations that a user must follow when operating a drone. Bowies credits her three-day course for the information she was provided concerning rules and regulations. For instance, drones are required to be registered, can’t be flown higher than 400 feet and within three miles of an airport and can’t be flown in over 15 mph winds. Bowie recalls a time when she was at a Brangus operation in Florida, about six miles from the airport. While flying her drone, she had to avoid being in the flight path of airplanes and found herself timing when planes came in, so she could fly her drones during the lulls. Uneducated drone users need to be aware that if they get in the flight path of another aircraft or fly too high, there is a possibility that the drone can be sucked into the motor or propeller and bring the larger aircraft down, Bowie commented. While drones are still so new and some things are left undecided as policy makers continue to discuss legal matters, Schultheis said there are concerns about privacy matters. “Privacy laws generally say you cannot video onto someone else’s private property at a resolution that you can distinguish what activities are occurring there. This would apply as well to the agricultural producer viewing their own property with a drone. They would need to hover at their property line and look back onto their own property,” Schultheis said. One downside to drone usage is the short battery life. Currently, a drone battery will last about 15-25 minutes, creating a disadvantage if you are trying to map large acreage. However, as their popularity continues to rise, battery life, along with lens availability and noise level should not be an issue for long. Like most technology products, the price range can be wide, depending on the quality, size, data storage and more. “There are more expensive models out there, but depending on your intended application you can get a relatively inexpensive drone. A multi-rotor copter would be ideal (unless you are planning on surveying large acreages) and several popular models cost approximately $1,000. Some manufacturers will customize a drone specifically for your intended applications and provide training and support as well,” said Duncan.
With robots in agriculture expecting to be a $16.3 billion industry by 2020, according to latest Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research report, and a majority of that business going to drone purchases, we only have to wait and see the possibilities that these products can do for the beef industry.
ABOUT REGISTERING YOUR DRONE If you plan to purchase a drone, a UAV registration mandate became effective Dec. 21, 2015, so anyone who owns a small unmanned aircraft of 0.55 lbs. to 55 lbs. must register with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) registry before they fly outdoors. More details can be found at: http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/.
Here are a couple more links potential drone owners should check out: HOW TO REGISTER YOUR DRONE https://registermyuas.faa.gov/

A Blonde Aggie’s Guide to Ad Photos By Sharla Ishmael As a magazine editor, if I got three wishes from a fairy godmother, one of them would be an easy explanation of photo resolution- what it is, how to determine what is needed for print and how to send high-resolution photos to me. Here is my attempt to simplify the issue enough that even a blonde Aggie like myself can understand how to determine if your calf/bull/winner photos are of high enough quality or resolution to use in your ad – and be happy with the end result.
I
t’s almost time to start designing ads for the big State Fair issue of the Show Circuit – that monstrous beast that helps breeders market thousands of show calves in sales all over the country this fall. That means it’s about time for our advertisers to start gathering up photos for their ads or schedule photo shoots for their calves asap – at least in an ideal world, anyway. In the real world, life on the farm or ranch doesn’t slow down long enough for most folks to set aside much time for planning their ads, including taking or gathering up photos. The ideal scenario to get the very best calf photos for your ad (for most folks) would be to hire a professional livestock photographer to come out to the ranch on a nice day when the calves are all cleaned up and you have plenty of help in the picture pen. Then you can ask the photographer to send us print-quality, high resolution pics and pictures are handled for this season. Of course even the best-laid plans can be waylaid by rain that delays your photo shoot until it’s too late to get them in by the deadline. Sometimes drought has caused the calves not to look their best in late spring/early summer when you need to take the pics, or other problems. We get it; often you just have to do the best you can with what you’ve got. This is meant to help you figure out what that is.
“So, what the heck is dpi and resolution anyway?”
In crude, laymen’s terms, pixels are dots of color in your image. The more pixels you have, the more detail your image will have and the higher the resolution. Sometimes instead of dpi you will see ppi (pixels per inch). For your ad in the Show Circuit, we need your photos to be at least 300 dpi to print sharp and clear on paper. That is the very best measure we can use. We use Photoshop to determine what resolution (dpi) a photo is, but if you don’t have that software it’s not a problem. It’s often easier to find the size of a photo. The guideline we use is if the photo is at least 500 KB it should be good to use in an ad (as long as you don’t want to blow it up real big as a background pic, for instance). It might be 500 KB in size but only 72 dpi, which limits how big we can use the photo in your ad, but it should be useable. However, the bigger the better. Most photos that are at least 1 MB in size tend to be high resolution. The only problem with the “bigger is better” rule is that some images can be too large to email. We’ll tackle that problem later on. So now you know that your ad photos need to be either 300 dpi or at least 500 KB in size. How do you know what size your photos are? There are several ways to find out.
There’s an even easier method than that. If you have your Finder open, at the top you have a few different options on how to view your files. If you choose the option that arranges your files in columns (See Example 1), then simply clicking once on the desired file will bring up a thumbprint image of your file with its size at the bottom right in your window. On a Windows PC, follow the same basic procedure. Right click on the file and select “Properties” to find out the size of the photo. Where to Look on Your Phone Maybe you took a quick pasture pic on your phone or perhaps somebody emailed you or texted you a photo. Now how do you determine the size/resolution of the photo? Well, you could email it to your computer and follow the instructions above, but you don’t have to. There are several options to get photo details on your phone. There are free apps you can download that will give you the size and other information about TM your photos including: Photo Investigator , Koredoko, Exif Viewer Free by Fluntro and Exif Wizard (for iOS). Since I have an iPhone, I decided to try this TM out and downloaded Photo Investigator . When you open this app, it asks you to select a photo and then brings up your albums (It may ask for permission to access your photos the first time you use it). I selected a recent photo of my daughter and was then given a number of options to choose from like where and when the photo was taken (See Next Page). In order to get to the dpi and file size, I had to select Metadata and asked to view all the information. I found out this particular photo was saved in TIFF format, was 72 dpi and 3.522 MB in size among other things. It could also tell me what settings I used on my camera to take the picture. [ Continued on page 162 ]
Example 3
Of the many ways to describe photo resolution and image quality, let’s stick with two primary ones for this discussion: dots per inch (dpi) or image size (kilobytes-KB, megabytes-MB and gigabytes-GB).
You can right click on the file IMG_2057, which brings up a window with several options, including one that says “Get Info.” (See Example 2). If you left click on the Get Info option, it will bring up another window with all kinds of information. At the very top it should say something like this - Kind: JPEG IMAGE and underneath that- Size: (11.6 MB on disk) (See Example 3) for instance.
Example 2
Quite often, a customer will ask us to pull a photo off of a website or Facebook page. We can’t do that. For one thing, most images you see online are low resolution – 72 dpi or less. For another thing, we don’t know who owns the rights to a particular image unless it’s on your own website, but even so, we can’t print low resolution photos. You won’t be happy with the results – the animal may look blurry, “pixelated” or even have an uneven topline or other misshapen body parts due to distortion of the image.
Where to Look on Your Computer If your photos are on your computer, it’s pretty easy to at least find the size of an image. For example, if you have a Mac computer, let’s say you have your photos in a folder named “2015 Calf pics.” Within that folder you have 5 different calf photos but the one you want is labeled IMG_2057 (See Example 1). You don’t even need to open up the photo to find the size of the picture.
Example 1
First Things First: Photo Resolution So if we assume that Plan A fell thru (hiring a photographer to take and send the photos), that leaves Plan B (use photos from previous years) or Plan C (take a few of your own). Let’s stick with Plan B for now – finding some photos you already have that will work. It doesn’t matter how a good the calf in the photo looks if the resolution of the photo is so low that it will look bad in print. This leads us to the most common misunderstanding with ad photos – ONLINE PHOTOS ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR MAGAZINES.
Tap the “Share” button after opening the photo. This looks like a box with an arrow coming out of the top.
Select “Mail” from the list of sharing options. This will open a new mail message with the image attached.
Enter your own email address. You’ll need to attempt to send the message in order to see the size, so use your own email address so that you don’t bother anyone if something goes wrong. Tap the “CC/BCC” line (iPad only). The iPad doesn’t work quite the same as an iPhone or iPod when performing this method. Tapping the “CC/BCC” line will show you the different size options for your photo. The “Actual Size” option is your photo’s actual size.[2] Tap “Send”. You will be prompted to select the size of your photo. The bottom option will show the actual size of the image.
• Note that the size refers to the entire size of the email. This means that if you selected multiple photos, you’ll only see their total size. • Tap “Cancel” when you’re done so that you don’t send the email. Notice that it will give you four options to send your photo: small, medium, large and actual size. If your sending a photo to be used in the magazine – send it ACTUAL SIZE. Often, email programs will downsize an attachment like a photo to send more quickly. That is NOT what we want. We want the biggest sized image you can send us! Problems with Emailing Your Photos This brings us back to the problem mentioned earlier, what if the photo is really big, like 25 MB? Most of the time if you try to send an email with that large of an attachment you’ll get an error message that says it’s too big to send. Or, you might have 10 photos that you want to send us for your ad, and while none of them are too large individually, together they are too large to send. Sometimes, your email program will automatically downsize your pics when you send a group of them and we have to ask you to resend one or two at a time to preserve their resolution. There is an easy fix for this! We use file sharing services like Dropbox or Hightail (there are others) to send big files back and forth to each other on the magazine staff. It’s as easy as going to the website of whichever service you want to use, setting up a quick account and following their instructions to send me an email with a link to download your files. Anytime you’re not sure about the size of your file and whether or not you can email it, this is a handy option. While these examples are mostly for iOS devices, no doubt the same options exist for Android or Windows or whatever your system is, I just didn’t have one to try it out for you. Chances are if you Google it, you can find answers to your digital image questions. Of course you can always ask your kids for help, but then you’ll have to be prepared for the teasing about what an old lady you are – or is that just at my house? One last tip: if you are taking your own photos, please make sure you have your settings at the highest possible resolution or image size that your camera offers. Once a photo is taken as a low resolution image it will ALWAYS be a low resolution image. There are no magic tricks in any designer’s toolbox that will make it a high resolution photo if it wasn’t taken that way in the beginning.

Open the Photos app and find the photo. While you can’t actually check the size of the photo in the Photos app, you can add it to an email message to check the approximate size. You won’t actually be sending any email.
Example 5
The Mail App Hack There is another way to do it that is probably quicker and easier that I found on www.wikihow.com under Find the File Size of an iOS Photo:
