No more excuses that you can’t get your calf to eat or you can’t get them fat enough!

A HUGE majority of the champions today are using this product so don’t get left behind, order yours today! “GLUCoat is the fat covering feed additive that has proven to us to be top of the line. It keeps them on feed, lays on smooth fat cover and gives them a shiny, healthy hair coat. The results we have seen with this product are second to none.” - John Sullivan, Sullivan Farms & Sullivan Supply

NOW Why is GLU-Coat Different? • GLU-Coat is not a fat product such as vegetable oil that when fed with today’s show feeds will slow down rumen activity. • GLU-Coat is a sugar product which speeds up rumen activity. You will never use a fat product again! GLU-Coat is a one of a kind all new product that is formulated with a high unique blend of sugars which can increase appetite and palatability. This unique blend of sugars keep the rumen working longer and faster than just a single source of glucose such as cane molasses. Due to the activity in the rumen there is less waste and with less waste the cattle’s stools should be more controllable. It has been shown to dramatically enhance fat cover and change the eating habits of your animal as well as increase feed efficiency and average daily gain. • For a minimal cost you get the best of two worlds - GLU-Coat and Cellrate. GLU-Coat has the Cellarator technology as it contains the active ingredient Cell-rate, which aids in the process of cellular replication, supports the animals immune system, helps animals get through stressful periods and aids in muscle and fat development. With the Cellarator technology your calf will feel better, act better and their eating habits will change. • A refined flavored fish oil is also formulated in GLU-Coat because it contains the highest levels of Omega 3 Fatty Acids which helps maintain a bright shiny hair coat. • GLU-Coat can also increase glucose levels which is stored in the body as fat, giving livestock that bloomier, fuller, softer look that is demanded in the show ring today. • GLU-Coat being molasses based and sweet to the taste, cattle love it.

Cattle GLU-Coat is a unique product to replace any oil or fat that you might be using. When a calf is behind in weight, not eating good, not fat enough, etc. the first thing a person does or thinks of is to ‘ADD FAT.’ Studies show that feed intake and feed efficiency go down when a feed reaches 6% fat content. So as a family putting fat or oils into a show feed of today it will normally sail over that 6% mark. In return, you are defeating the purpose of adding fat and may have a negative effect on weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency. When too much oil or fat is used, it will coat the rumen and the feed particles in the rumen which will slow down the digestion of the nutrients. Excess fat or oil can also create loose stools.

How do the VITA HAIR™ Nourishing Vitamins work? Biotin vitamin is the first vitamin thought of when considering HAIR GROWTH. The major benefit of Biotin is its ability to strengthen both the hair follicle and the hair shaft, where the hair is produced, which prevents hair breakage and dryness. This is a scientifically proven crucial step in the natural hair growing process. One of the chief things that slows hair growth is damaged hair. Biotin enriched hair has increased elasticity of the cortex which prevents breakage. This enables healthy, FASTER HAIR GROWTH. Biotin also thickens the actual hair cuticle providing a fuller appearance. Pro-Vitamin B-5 is considered the king of all HAIR CARE vitamins. Pro-Vitamin B-5 stimulates healthy scalp circulation which leads to improved hair health. It coats the hair and seals its surface, lubricating the hair shaft making the hair shine. It possesses superior long term moisturizing properties because of its unique ability to penetrate and nourish the hair shaft. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that stimulates circulation to the skin and supports capillary growth. The skin needs to have proper circulation in order to keep the hair follicles alive and thriving. When there are more capillaries, the circulation improves leading to increased nutrient absorption into the hair follicles, which speeds hair growth.

Sullivan’s

Vita Hair Volumizer Foaming Shampoo ™

The first livestock shampoo to scientifically produce hair volume!

Vita Hair Volumizer™ Foaming Shampoo is formulated with a natural plant-based proprietary surfactant technology which creates an opposite acting polar electrical charge within each hair strand that actually pushes every hair follicle apart. This prevents the hair from sticking together, and actually springs it loose, making each hair follicle stand on end for a noticeable difference in hair volume and body. This, never before offered, exclusive chemistry for livestock consists of chemically altered ions. Ions are small electrical molecules within surfactants that usually have positive or negative charges which create an attraction to each other. In livestock hair, this attraction causes hair follicles to stick to each other. The non-ionic chemistry of Vita Hair Volumizer™ inhibits an unusual neutral charge to the ionic molecule of each follicle creating no attraction or pull between the hair strands. This neutral charge actually enables each hair follicle to stand free for extreme hair separation. All this with a plant based neutral pH makes it gentle and nourishing to the hide and hair as it gently cleans deep, down to the roots of each hair follicle. Fortified with Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ a nourishing vitamin package to boost hair and skin health without added weight to hair. Designed to be used in a foamer.

A true “game changer” in hair performance!

Sullivan’s

Hair Savior Adhesive Breakdown ™

Hair Savior™ is just that! Finally, a liquid adhesive breakdown that is healthy for your leg hair. Hair Savior™ adhesive breakdown features a proprietary blend of the purest, mild cosmetic grade plant-based ester technologies to naturally attack and gently remove adhesives and touch-ups away from the hair. These specific plant based surfactants have been specially identified for their unique ability to naturally counter-act the tackiness of adhesives, changing their rubberized molecular resin structure to gently dissolve the bond from the hair without any harsh stripping action. This properly balanced pH formula prevents heavy, oily residues and will not create heat. Contains the Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ nourishing vitamin package. Hair Savior™ is the first liquid adhesive breakdown product with added hair vitamins to hydrate and regenerate the hair. Mild and gentle, no harsh chemicals like other removers.

Hair Savior™ ... the showman’s choice for repetitive show schedules and leg hair health!

BUSINESS MINDED

Today’s College Degree: Still a Good Investment

A

courtesy of Matthew E. O’Donnell, Vice President Morgan Stanley Smith Barney s the cost of a college education continues to soar, and consistently outpaces the rate of inflation, many wonder if the value of higher education is

overrated. But college graduates still enjoy a sizeable earnings advantage, better earning potential and greater job security. Young people starting out in any industry can expect to face a difficult job market, particularly in today’s economic environment. However, a recent study by the Pew Charitable Trust shows that following the last recession, college graduates fared far better than high school graduates, experiencing less unemployment and more stable salaries. While the study does not factor in the cost of attending college, it does indicate that although the job market is difficult for young people, a college degree can greatly enhance their outlook.1 Another recent study by the Lumina Foundation and Georgetown University reports that since the recovery began, the economy has added two million jobs for workers with a bachelor’s degree, while nearly 6 million high school diploma-only jobs have been lost. The results reported indicate that following the recession, the divide between college-educated workers and those with a high school degree has never been greater. Statistics from the study reveal that the unemployment rate for college graduates is 4.5%, while those with a high school diploma are experiencing a 24% unemployment rate.2 A Long-Term Investment in Future Earning Potential Determining the long-term earning potential of a college degree and the premium it generally offers over a high school diploma is a calculation that should take into account lost earnings while in college, the actual cost of college and debt repayment. The Pew Research Center’s study offers a current analysis based on Census Bureau

Tax-Wise College Saving Options There are many savings vehicles available that can be used to help offset the spiraling cost of a college education and provide important tax benefits such as: • 529 Savings Plans: Earnings on savings can be withdrawn tax free for qualified higher education expenses. Contributions can be made by anyone, including grandparents, other relatives or friends. Annual contribution limits may apply depending on the plan, with total contribution limits per child generally maxing out at $300,000.3 • Coverdell Education Savings Account: Contributions of up to $2,000 per child per year can be made until the child reaches age 18. Distributions are withdrawn tax-free for any qualified education expenses including private school and equipment such as computers beginning with grades K-12 and post-secondary. Eligibility is based on MAGI (modified adjusted gross income) not earned income so if the parent’s income level is too high to qualify, a student can contribute to his or her own account.

data, which estimates that an adult with a bachelor’s degree will earn an average of $1.42 million over a 40-year career, while a high school graduate will earn $770,000. Once the cost of college and lost income is factored in, the study projects an average earnings premium of $550,000 for those with a college degree.1

• Roth IRAs: Can be used to pay for qualified higher educational expenses (postsecondary) incurred by yourself, your spouse, your children or your grandchildren. Original contributions plus earnings can be withdrawn tax free and without penalty. If the funds are not needed for college expenses, the Roth assets can maintain tax-free growth potential for retirement.

A sizeable earnings premium coupled with a significantly lower unemployment rate for college graduates offers a strong case for the long-term benefits of a college degree. Additionally, the study indicates that individuals who have a college degree

are more likely to receive substantial increases in salary and progress further in their chosen career compared with those who hold only a high school degree.

It is important to note that some savings options can impact financial aid pack-

OKLAHOMA CLUB CALF ASSOCIATION Wow! It’s spring time again. The 2013 Oklahoma Beef Expo was a great success! This show is also where we recognize members’ outstanding achievements from the previous point year and begin a new year. It was good to see our members receive the awards they had worked so hard for all year. This year’s awards included trailers awarded to the All-Around Exhibitors in the steer, heifer and showmanship divisions. Also, show boxes to the All-Around Runners-Up, 72 buckles for breed and reserve breed winners, district, novice and loyalty awards. There were 18 members who earned their first-ever OCCA letterman jacket for making the Top 10 in at least one division. On behalf of the OCCA Board of Directors, I say thank you to all of our sponsors for making these awards possible. Speaking of the Board of Directors, the Oklahoma Beef Expo is also where both the junior and senior boards change. I sincerely appreciate the leadership Tim Stidham has provided to our organization the past three years as OCCA President and look forward to working with the Board of Directors and membership in my new role as your OCCA President. With spring comes summer. I know several of our exhibitors are already getting cattle ready to go to many of the breed junior national shows across the country. These competitions serve to let our members not only showcase their cattle and hard work, but compete and meet with several other junior showmen from around the nation. There are a lot of lifelong friendships made during this time. I wish everyone the best of luck and safe travel to and from these shows. I was fortunate to be able to attend the 87th Annual Oklahoma State FFA Convention recently held in Oklahoma City. This year’s theme was “Grow Like That,” and it was an honor to watch several of our older members be recognized for the impressive individuals they have become. I am proud to be part of the Oklahoma Club Calf Association. This organization helps to instill hard work, dedication, sportsmanship, responsibility, and the willingness to go that extra mile to achieve success in whatever endeavor they choose to participate in. Congratulations to all of our members on another successful year; you make us proud. Until next time, good luck, God bless and remember IT ALL STARTS BEFORE SUNRISE!

What It’s Like To Be...

A Beef Risk Manager/Trader With Ben Brophy, Cargill Meat Solutions

SC: What is your background – were you raised on a farm or ranch? I was raised on a cattle ranch in southeastern Arizona. SC: Would you describe for us what you really do (sometimes job titles aren’t reflective of the actual work): I buy and sell Live Cattle futures and options to manage our price risk exposure for our feedlot and packing plant inventories. SC: How did you get into this line of work? I started as a management trainee in our cattle feeding operations after graduating from college. SC: What do you like about your job? Risk management requires extensive information gathering, analysis and interpretation to determine market drivers, trends etc – therefore, you are never done… there is always more to understand, more questions to ask. The mind stays challenged. SC: What are the toughest challenges for what you do? Identifying the correct market drivers – Is it boxed beef wholesale demand? Cash market fed cattle prices? Money

Flow from Hedge funds? Macro- economic events/data? SC: Do you need a college degree in your profession? Yes. SC: Where should somebody go to get started in your line of work? Depending on your field of interest – Agricultural commodities, energy or financial – there are banks, hedge funds and independent commodity brokers that you would talk to. SC: What is a typical day on the job like for you? I spend the morning on technical and fundamental analysis, then am trading futures from 9 AM to 1 PM while the market is open, followed by more analysis in the afternoon. Mining data for trading opportunities, working across our business segments to obtain market intelligence from procurement, pricing and sales.

SC: What would most surprise a high school or college student about your career? You have to push a broom for a few years even if you have a college degree.

SC: Anything you wish someone would have told you when you were in school?

AJCA ARKANSAS JUNIOR CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION AJCA AwArds College sCholArships The Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Association is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of graduating high school senior scholarship awards. Katy Tunstill of Fayetteville receives $2,000; Katie McNinch of Enola receives $1,800; Emily Bilbrey of Walnut Ridge receives $1,600; and Hunter Yates of Walnut Ridge receives $1,600. Katy Tunstill, past AJCA president, has spent her life raising and exhibiting Angus cattle. Most of her extracurricular activities have been agricultural-based programs such as 4-H, FFA, Arkansas Junior Angus Association, Arkansas Jr. Simmental Association and the AJCA. She first joined AJCA in 2004 and has held the offices of president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer, area vice president and even was the AJCA points administrator. Katy has chaired the AJCA state leadership conference, the AJCA bake sale and has coordinated the AJCA year-end awards ceremony. She served as chairman of four statewide cattle shows and one regional cattle show. Katy believes that being a part of AJCA has truly been one of the best experiences of her life, so far. “I will always cherish traveling from show to show every weekend, spending time with family and friends, and gaining confidence not only in my ability to exhibit cattle, but gaining experiences such as writing articles, organizing events and shows and speaking to adult cattlemen and cattlewomen about the benefits of AJCA,” she says. Katy was a member of the FFA state winning livestock judging team in 2012 and awarded 2nd high overall individual. Katy is the daughter of Darrell and Sheri Tunstill. She will attend Oklahoma State University where she will study agricultural communications and agribusiness. Katie McNinch will attend Central Baptist College in Conway to study physical therapy. Katie is the daughter of Dale and Kelly McNinch and has been a part of AJCA since 2007.

She has held leadership positions in FFA and FCA, along with being a member of FCCLA, Beta Club and a member of her school yearbook staff. Katie is an excellent athlete playing both basketball and softball for her high school. Her years exhibiting cattle with AJCA has provided her with self-confidence. She has learned responsibility, sportsmanship and leadership. Katy has learned that she must be responsible for the appearance and care of her cattle. They depend upon her to take care of them, and she has learned that you don’t always win, but you must keep your chin up and head on to the next show just the same. She has learned that your actions speak louder than your words. Others watch her and she wants them to emulate the good things she does and the positive attitude she portrays. These traits will carry her through college and her career. Katie exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer at the 2012 Arkansas State Fair. She says, “I have had many success stories while showing. But most of all I have had the opportunity to spend time with family and make friends that will last a lifetime.” Emily Bilbrey, the daughter of Tanya Bratcher, will attend Arkansas State University majoring in Animal Science/ Veterinary Medicine. Emily has been an AJCA member since 2008 and shows commercial heifers, Angus, Shorthorn and Red Angus cattle. During Emily’s years of showing cattle, she has received many Grand and Reserve Grand Champion awards at local, district, state and national shows. One year at the Arkansas State Fair, she exhibited both the Grand Champion Shorthorn heifer and the Grand Champion Red Angus heifer. Last year at the Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo, she exhibited the Reserve Grand Fall Calf Champion Red Angus heifer. Emily has been inducted into the Arkansas State Fair Purple Circle Club for exhibiting grand champions and won two prestigious AJCA belt buckles last year for both the Overall Red Angus Bull and Overall Red Angus Heifer. Emily is very active on her high school campus, serving as president of student council, vice president of FFA and FTA, secretary of HOSA and secretary of

Beta Club. Emily says, “I was always a very shy person. Showing cattle has helped me to come out of my shell. I love meeting new people in AJCA. I will always have ribbons and awards reminding me what I won. But it’s the people involved in AJCA that have boosted my self-confidence. Nothing can ever replace that.” Hunter Yates will attend Connors State College in Warner, Okla., majoring in Purebred Ranch Operations. Hunter is also planning to pursue a veterinary medicine degree later at Oklahoma State University, and he is the son of Jeff and Kellie Yates. Having been involved in AJCA for the past five years, Hunter has attended various cattle shows and earned numerous Grand and Reserve Grand Champion award exhibiting Angus, Red Angus, Chianina, commercial heifers and market steers. He is active at his high school, serving as both FFA vice president and FCA president along with being a student council member, science club and livestock show team member. He participates on the livestock judging, horse judging, land judging, meats judging and forestry judging teams. Hunter is an active member of the football, basketball and track teams. “I became a member of AJCA because I wanted to learn more about the cattle industry and meet people who shared a common passion for cattle,” he says. “The three main lessons AJCA has taught me include responsibility, time management and sportsmanship. My membership in AJCA has led me to my chosen career path. AJCA has literally been life changing by giving me a sense of direction and purpose. I am truly thankful for all those affiliated with AJCA and the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association for their willingness to encourage, uplift and support me as I chase my dream of a future cattleman and veterinarian.” Funding for the AJCA scholarships is provided by funds from the AJCA sponsors, along with monies raised from the AJCA Thanksgiving Classic Show. Congratulations to the winners.

MULTIMIN® USA

Scholarship

Katy Tunstill of Fayetteville, Ark., has been named the winner of the AJCA MULTIMIN®USA scholarship in the amount of $500. Katy attends Elkins High School. This scholarship is made possible by AJCA supporter Mike Runner, who our regional MULTIMIN®USA sales representative.

Katy Tunstill is a vibrant, young leader in the livestock business and works hard to accomplish her life goals and dreams. She exhibits exceptional leadership skills. Whether it is leading a group of officers or a committee to plan an event like our state leadership conference, or organizing her peers into completing certain tasks at our annual fundraiser cattle show and awards program, Katy has always been willing to jump in, do her part and more. Katy Tunstill is a young lady who has made great achievements. These awards and accolades have been much deserved. She works hard with her livestock projects from working daily with her show cattle to carefully making breeding decisions to leading livestock related youth development groups like AJCA or the Arkansas Jr. Angus Association, the Arkansas Jr. Simmental Association or the Goin’ Showin’ 4-H Club – all of which she has served as president. In all of her cattle-related organizations and projects, Katy shows a strong work ethic, determination, dedication and commitment to her many and varied responsibilities. Katy is constantly promoting the positive message of our beef industry by advocating for agriculture. She promotes all aspects of livestock-related, youth development organizations that include the following: livestock and life skill educational experiences, leadership development and developing lifelong friendships. Be it in her actions or her words, Katy is a role model to her peers and a mentor to younger livestock enthusiasts. MULTIMIN®USA has many products to enhance our animal health management programs. Katy will be presented her scholarship at the upcoming Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association Convention in August.

the big picture The Weather Channel’s Summer Outlook: June-August

T

he Weather Channel Companies have released their summer temperature outlook for 2013. For a large majority of the lower 48 states, above-average temperatures are expected this summer.

Temperatures are expected to be the farthest above average from Texas westward through the central and southern Rockies to the West Coast from northern and central California to Oregon. One pocket of the country, the Great Lakes region, is expected to see temperatures coolerthan-average this summer. This would include Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo, N.Y. According to WSI Chief Meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford, “The summers of 2010-12 were the hottest three consecutive summers in the U.S. since at least 1895. The heat was due, in part, to a combination of (1) warmer-than-normal North Atlantic temperatures, (2) a lack of El Nino conditions and (3) expanding drought conditions. Heading into the upcoming summer, an examination of these factors reveals a lesser degree of consensus regarding heat relative to the past three years. “In particular, while a significant El Nino event is not expected, recent and expected warming in the tropical Pacific may occasionally support a pattern that favors cooler-than-normal temperatures in parts of the eastern U.S. Further, we expect the most significant spring rains to impact areas from the Plains eastward, while the western U.S. will continue to dry out. This evolution is more suggestive of a west-based drought this summer which would favor very warm summer temperatures there, and potentially cooler-than-normal temperatures downstream in parts of the eastern U.S. Finally, there have been persistent trends in recent climate model forecasts towards a cooler summer across parts of the eastern U.S.

The latest Drought Monitor released at press time shows a large swath of “exceptional” drought areas in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Southeastern Colorado and Western Kansas. As you can see from the graph, most of the entire Western half of the U.S. is under some level of drought conditions.

“Our final analysis suggests that this summer will not be as hot as the previous three, but will still be characterized by widespread areas of above-normal temperatures, especially across the southern and western US. The best chance for below-normal temperatures this summer will be across the Great Lakes region.” That’s the overall summer forecast. Below we look at the monthly details:

JUNE JULY - The Weather Channel

Cooler-than-average temperatures will stretch across parts of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Upper Mississippi Valley. Once again, well above-average temperatures will be focused on the western states and expand to include the adjacent High Plains and much of Texas.

A large chunk of the West will continue to see above-average temperatures. Meanwhile, below-average temperatures are expected in the Great Lakes and Northeast. Unfortunately, the drought outlook from May through August indicates that drought conditions in the Western half of the country will persist or intensify, though some improvement may be seen roughly up and down the middle of the United States.

In this graphic, areas shaded tan or “B” indicates below normal precipitation for June through August. The small area of green in the Deep South is forecasted for above normal precipitation during those three months. The rest of the country is labeled “EC,” which means equal chances for above, below or normal precipitation.

This sister graph for temperature shows the same areas of the plains that are forecasted to experience persistent or intensified drought conditions will also see above normal temperature for June, July and August (Area labeled “A”).

South Dakota Jr. Point Members, Spring has finally reached South Dakota, and all that comes with it; although we are all feeling the pressure of being behind due to the unseasonably low temperatures we experienced in April. Pig, lamb and goat exhibitors have made their selections for their show pens and it always proves to be an exciting time of the year. 2013 marks the first year of inclusion for the SDJPS Market Goat. The show season starts to heat back up in June and I encourage you all to have fun and make the most out of your summer. Remember some of the best parts of the show livestock industry is the family time spent on the way to the next show, and the new people you meet along the way. Safe travels and see you down the road! Check out the website for a complete listing of upcoming sanctioned shows at www.sdjps.com Sincerely,

Quail Forever’s Covey Reaches All-time Membership Record Quail Forever (QF), the national nonprofit devoted to quail conservation, has set an all-time membership record of 10,216 members located throughout the country. Launched in 2005 by Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever boasts 130 local chapter affiliates across the country. In fact, in the past six months, Quail Forever has added 22 new chapters: California (5), Florida (1), Georgia (3), Illinois (1), Indiana (3), Missouri (1), North Carolina (1), Pennsylvania (1), South Carolina (2), Tennessee (1), Utah (1) and Virginia (2). Chapters utilize the organization’s unique model, which enables them to retain 100% control over how their locally raised funds are spent. This local decisionmaking allows members to see the fruits of their chapter efforts in their own communities via habitat and youth education projects, while belonging to a national organization with a voice on federal conser-

vation policy in Washington D.C. “This milestone is not only significant for Quail Forever, but for quail restoration efforts nationwide. It signifies a growing trend of people actively involved with bringing back quail habitat,” said Howard K. Vincent, Quail Forever President and CEO. “From California to Florida, Quail Forever members have rallied behind our mission of quail habitat restoration and have put in countless hours to turn the tide. I urge all those who understand the importance of these birds to join us in bringing back this iconic game bird. Habitat help is needed more than ever before.” For more information regarding Quail Forever, please contact Rehan Nana, Quail Forever Public Relations Specialist, at (651) 209-4973 or visit www.quailforever.org. Obama Gets “Three Pinocchios” from Washington Post on Gun Control Rhetoric

W

hy wouldn’t we want to close the loophole that allows as many as 40% of all gun purchases to take place without a background check?” — President Obama, remarks on gun safety, March 28, 2013

President Obama isn’t the only one touting an outdated, tortured statistic about the number of guns bought without the buyer having to undergo a background check. But he is the one who the Washington Post called out in great detail, awarding him not one but three “Pinocchios” for the repeated repetition of the discredited claim. According to the newspaper, “There are two key problems with the president’s use of this statistic: The numbers are about two decades old, yet he acts as if they are fresh, and he refers to “purchases” or “sales” when in fact the original report concerned “gun acquisitions” and “transactions.” Those are much broader categories of data. “As we noted before, the White House said the figure comes from a 1997 Institute of Justice report, written by Philip Cook of Duke

University and Jens Ludwig of the University of Chicago. This study was based on data collected from a survey in 1994, the same year that the Brady Act requirements for background checks came into effect. In fact, the questions concerned purchases dating as far back as 1991, and the Brady Act went into effect in early 1994 — meaning that some, if not many, of the guns were bought in a pre-Brady environment. “Digging deeper, we found that the survey sample was just 251 people. (The survey was done by telephone, using a random-digitdial method, with a response rate of 50%.) With this sample size, the 95% confidence interval will be plus or minus six percentage points.” There are numerous other problems with the statistic and they have been made public by several high-profile sources. But staunch gun-control advocates, including the POTUS, continue to quote the 40% number it as if it were rock-solid fact. And that couldn’t be further from the truth.

HSUS Pushes for Deer Birth Control In Place of Hunting

T

he Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has recently offered their suggestion on how to cut an increased deer population in Washington D.C.- birth control. Deer populations in Rock Creek Park in D.C. have increased to 3-5 times more than what the National Park Service (NPS) deems sufficient, causing the NPS to take action. Controlled hunting has been successfully used as a means to limit the population – something hunters are willing to do and even to pay for the opportunity. But HSUS sees this as a “wasteful killing program.” HSUS is pushing the NPS to administer a form of birth control known as porcine zona pellucida (PZP) that causes antibodies to bind to a deer’s eggs to block fertilization. Administering PZP is expected to cost taxpayers $340,000 for just the Rock Creek Park alone according to humanewatch.org. HSUS has offered to pay for half of the program, leaving taxpayers “holding the bag” for the rest of the cost. Hunting has proven to be a successful means of population control, while also providing vital dollars to state wildlife agencies to maintain wildlife populations. HSUS ignores this fact, and instead is asking taxpayers to use their hard earned money to pay for their unproven “birth control agenda.” In addition, the NPS has set criteria for birth control vaccines to follow in order to be administered, and luckily, PZP does not meet the full criteria. This is just one case of many where HSUS has pushed for a no-hunting agenda, including recent anti-bear hunting and bear trapping legislation introduced in Maine. HSUS fills the number one spot on U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance’s “Dirty Dozen” (see sidebar) list of anti-hunting organizations. – The Sportsmen’s Daily, USSA publication

There are groups that undermine and manipulate systems across America to end hunting, trapping and fishing. These same “less-than-honest” groups also often then exploit wildlife and conservation issues in the name of raising dollars for their devious causes. Here are a dozen organizations that have taken efforts in the past year to prevent you from hunting or trapping: Center for Biological Diversity: This group has repeatedly sued the federal government to end the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): use of traditional hunting ammunition through atAfter losing an effort to have the chairman of Calitempts to ban lead. This ban would also apply to fornia’s Game Commission removed because he fishing tackle and would affect all sportsmen and women. went legally hunting for mountain lions in another The group’s information is based on flawed details about state, HSUS then pushed legislation to end the hunting lead and bullets. The CBD is also working—and suing—to of bears and bobcats with hounds in California. HSUS has stop Western Great Lakes region wolf hunting seasons. also threatened to sue to stop wolf hunting in the Western Great Lakes region. Shame on them.

3

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): This radical animal rights group issued a request for its minions across America to break established hunter harassment laws. PETA urged followers to interfere with hunts by protesting, spreading human hair and other unlawful acts.

5 7

Sierra Club: This group’s board of directors worked for—and implemented—a policy officially opposing all trapping. The Sierra Club also tried to end a decades old elk hunt on public land in Wyoming. Howling for Wolves: A Minnesota-based group suing to stop wolf hunting in that state. The group claims that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources didn’t properly adopt the hunting season even though it went through the same process as other hunting seasons.

9

Defenders of Wildlife: This group has been working to end wolf management in Wyoming and misguiding the public on the truth about overpopulated Yellowstone wolves. Defenders of Wildlife has filed a number of anti-hunting lawsuits and often seeks to recoup its legal costs for the suits from taxpayers.

6

The Fund for Animals: They have threatened to sue to halt established Western Great Lakes region wolf hunts after hunters and state game management supporters were successful in removing the long recovered wolves from the Endangered Species List. The have also filed a suit that would stop wolf management in Wyoming.

8

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: Supports laws to prevent keeping dogs in outside kennels (a standard practice across America). They have also filed a brief supporting the lawsuit aimed at shutting down wolf hunting with dogs in Wisconsin.

Western Environmental Law Center: A ring leader in a group of eight anti-organizations that want to ban wolverine trapping in Montana until the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) determines if the wolverine will be placed on the federal threatened and endangered species lists. This is just another “backdoor” ploy to end all trapping.

11

Friends of Animals: This Connecticut-based group believes “hunting in all forms is unethical, socially unjustifiable and ecologically disruptive.” The group worked against bear hunting in New Jersey, deer hunting in Connecticut, and against many science-based conservation programs. This group claims “hunting is an important cause of many deer/ auto collisions… by inciting the deer to be incautious.”

10

In Defense of Animals: This antihunting group sued to stop bear hunting in Virginia, has called for a boycott of Alaska over its highly successful and sustainable wolf management program, strongly opposes wolf management in the Northern Rocky Mountains, and is pushing for a federal ban on animal testing for medical research.

12

WildEarth Guardians: They earn a place on this shame list for working to ban trapping on public land in New Mexico. This group has also sued the federal Wildlife Services department over their wolf management program and has called on Congress to end funding for this important federal wildlife management entity.

Please spread the word on these anti groups. Your next hunting, fishing or trapping trip depends on it. – Sportsmen’s Daily

Whether it’s your trusted cattle dog, a valuable hunting dog or the kids’ irreplaceable pet, you can protect your dog from an old enemy – the rattlesnake.

A

s a kid growing up on an isolated ranch in New Mexico, one of the things I heard all the time from my folks was: “Watch out for snakes!” Of course, we did have the kind of rattlesnakes that would get your attention. Once, we took a picture of a snake that stretched from tire to tire across the front of our pickup – with his head and rattles already cut off. It was that kind of super-snake that our hired hand killed one day and kindly gave me the rattles for my collection. Unfortunately for him, we had a language barrier between us and I didn’t understand they were mine to keep. So, after looking at the rattles, I casually tossed them onto his bed in the bunkhouse where he could easily find them. For some reason, Arnulfo didn’t turn on the lights when he came home that night – that is until he wearily jerked back the covers and heard that dreaded buzz. They said he almost created a new door in the little house that night trying to get out of there! Rattlesnakes are just part of the fabric of life for ranchers and their animals, with ranch dogs and hunting dogs getting more than their fair share of exposure to them. The good news is dog owners have a tool to mitigate the effects of the snake’s toxic venom, particularly in the western half of the country. The rattlesnake vaccine Red Rock Biologics, a California company, developed

a vaccine that will help your dog recover more quickly from a rattlesnake bite with less pain, swelling and intensive care, as well as buying your dog more time to get to the veterinarian alive, in some cases. “Basically, it works by stimulating the dog’s immune system in a safe manner to recognize the antigen in the venom,” explained Dr. Paula Ibsen, who at the time of this interview was a staff veterinarian with Red Rock Biologics. “Then it will produce neutralizing antibodies against the venom according to the dog’s ability to produce antibodies. “It’s very different from a vaccine against a disease,” she added. “When you vaccinate against the flu in people, if you’re exposed to the flu you have an incubation period. So, the vaccine needs to prime your immune system to produce antibodies and get rid of the flu virus. In this case, you need the antibodies already on board because envenomation is going to occur immediately.” The vaccine is formulated using venom from Western Diamondback rattlesnakes, so it’s most effective against that particular snake. But according to the company, the vaccine also provides “good to excellent” coverage against the following rattlesnakes: Western, Prairie, Great Basin, Northern Pacific, Southern Pacific, Arizona and the Grand Canyon. Ibsen said they classify the vaccine’s coverage as “good to fair” for these rattlesnakes: Timber, Sidewinder, Red Diamond

and Dusky Pygmy, as well as Copperhead snakes. It’s “fair to poor” for the Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake, found mostly in the Southeast. And it provides no coverage against the Mojave rattlesnake, Water Moccasin or Coral Snakes. (The Mojave has a deadlier toxin in its venom called neurotoxin, which affects the brain and spinal cord, resulting in paralysis and suffocation.) A really good thing Dr. Scott Burt of Highland Animal Hospital in Big Springs, Texas, has used the vaccine extensively in his practice, where he sees around 4,000 dog visits a year, and likes the results. In 2006, Burt’s practice saw an unusually high amount of bites – 50 bites in a six-week period instead of the usual three or four a month. Of the four or five vaccinated dogs that subsequently got bitten, he said the dogs experienced mild swelling and weren’t really sick. So, he observed them, sent the dogs home with antibiotics and pain medicine and they did just fine. In one particular case, a farmer had a little Dachshund that was bitten on the chest on a Saturday. His wife was out of town and he decided not to seek treatment for the dog until she got back. Burt says it survived until Monday, which he doesn’t believe would have happened if the little dog had not been vaccinated. Many factors determine results While the vaccine’s general benefits are attenuation of the symptoms with less need for costly treatment, how an individual dog responds to either a bite or the vaccine depends on numerous factors.

“First, there are the snake factors,” Ibsen explained. “The type of snake, the time of the year, when the snake last fed, what kind of strike it was – defensive or feeding – and the age of the snake are all factors. Then on the dog’s side, it’s how long since the last vaccine, the dog’s ability to create antibodies, its size and where on the body it was struck and the dog’s general health and age. So, when you multiply those factors together, it’s very difficult to (characterize) a standard response. Snake bites are notoriously unstandard.”

“Chest bites are really bad,” he explains. “If they get bit on the nose it’s usually a better prognosis than a body bite just because it gets into circulation so much quicker on the leg or chest. Of course, you never know how much venom they have in them when you get them in, and that’s the scary thing. Some of them look fine one minute and within an hour they’re swelled up like a balloon and almost dead.”

According to www.marvistavet. com, around 25% of rattlesnake bites are “dry” bites with no venom injected; while another 30% are mild, causing local pain and swelling but no systemic symptoms. Then another 40% of bites are severe, with approximately 5% being fatal.

“That’s the thing, we have antivenin available and it works really good, but it is expensive,” he explained. “I think our cost of one bottle (was at the time of the interview) about $400. That’s not including all the treatment fees and hospitalization and everything else.”

Burt has seen the variation in his practice. “The Western Diamondback rattlesnake has necrotoxin venom and it causes immediate pain and swelling, depending on the location of the bite and how much venom they get (among other things),” he said. “We had a little Jack Russell terrier that got bit on the nose and it didn’t swell up much at all or feel very bad, even though they are pretty hyperactive.”

Vaccine cost and schedule

He also recalls a Brittany Spaniel that got bit on the nose, but it went into convulsions and shock with projectile diarrhea before the owners could get to Burt’s clinic. It almost died.

Burt has seen the variation in his practice. “The Western Diamondback rattlesnake has necrotoxin venom and it causes immediate pain and swelling, depending on the location of the bite and how much venom they get (among other things),” he said.

Burt said they lose dogs quite frequently to rattlesnake bite because of the length of the time before they’re found or the size of the dog, as an example. Then there’s the cost of the treatment to consider. Sometimes the owner elects to forgo the treatment because of the cost.

While the cost of the rattlesnake vaccine to the client depends on how your veterinarian sets his or her prices, my online search found a range of $15 and up per vaccination. Depending on the environment and other factors, a dog will need an initial vaccination followed by at least one booster shot 30 days later. Vaccination protocol may be different for particular dogs in specific environments, too. “Snake season varies quite a bit,” explained Ibsen. “In northern areas, snakes hibernate so they have a six-month period. In southern areas, it’s year-round because they don’t get that cold. So, it’s important to remember that you need to vaccinate 30 days before snake season starts because you need 30 days for the dog to create the antibody. “The antibody titers last approximately six months. So if your snake season is six months long, you can get away with one booster in the spring. If it’s eight months long or if you hunt in the fall, then you’re going to want to booster halfway through, which may only be at four months.

“If you have snakes year-round, July or August is not a bad time to start,” she said. “If you hunt in the fall, it’s perfect because if you’re starting the vaccine for the firs time the dog needs their first show in the beginning of August and the second one in the beginning of September if you’re going to hunt in October and November.” As well, small dogs (less than 25 pounds) may need more frequent boosters because they are more susceptible to injury and large dogs (more than 100 pounds) may need a third booster the first year. Red Rock Biologics literature states that the vaccine is safe to use on pregnant and lactating dogs, puppies as young as four months and healthy older dogs. Side effects As with any vaccination, there is the potential for unwanted side effects -mainly swelling at the injection site and, rarely, cases of vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. “Out of the 500 (initial doses) that we did, we had five or six dogs that formed a big lump at the vaccine site and one Chihuahua that abscessed from it,” explained Burt. “That has happened with any vaccine. I think this is probably a little more prominent because it’s new and it’s not a viral vaccine like all the others. “So, some animals are going to react more severely to it, which is no big

“If you have snakes year-round, July or August is not a bad time to start,” she said. “If you hunt in the fall, it’s perfect because if you’re starting the vaccine for the firs time the dog needs their first show in the beginning of August and the second one in the beginning of September if you’re going to hunt in October and November.”

deal. You drain those and they are fine. It’s just been a bothersome thing to the client and we are warning everybody now. But five out of 500 – that’s 1%. Not too bad,” he said. Like any treatment, discussing with your veterinarian the risks and benefits versus the consequences of your dog being bitten without any protection is a good idea. Always see your vet One thing everyone agrees on is whether or not you decide to vaccinate your dog, always take the dog to your veterinarian as soon as possible if it is bitten by any kind of snake.

“One thing we tell people is that this (vaccine) doesn’t preclude the necessity for treatment,” said Burt. “Bring the dog in to have it checked because again, if they get a big whopping dose close to an artery or close to a muscle that has a lot of blood flow, they may need supportive care. It’s still going to hurt and they have a chance of getting infected. They still need to be treated for pain and infection.” So what should you do if old “Lucky” gets a little too close to a snake? According to www.thepetcenter.com, try to identify the snake, noting size, color, patterns, presence of rattles, etc. And carefully examine your dog to see if there are fang marks and how many bite wounds. If the dog has been bitten on a leg, you might consider wrapping a snug band just above the bite wound – but don’t make it a tight tourniquet. Then start your way to the vet’s office – perhaps give them a call to alert them to the emergency on the way. And stay calm, both you and your dog. Burt advised, “They used to have those kits where you’d try to suck the venom out and pack it in ice, but that’s really proven not to be beneficial. The main thing is trying to keep them calm because you don’t want their circulation going any faster than you can help so that the toxin doesn’t get sucked up into the systemic circulation quickly. “The key thing is just to seek medical care ASAP!”

TURBO

Livestock Fan

• Nothing matches the Turbo for RPMs, CFMs and Air Velocity. The Turbo pushes the air at 5560 feet per minute. This is 22% faster and harder than other fans. To achieve this, the custom engineered Turbo motor rotates at 1740 RPMs, faster than any other competitive livestock fan.

• The Dominant Motor Quality ... How? The sealed ball bearing Nidec - Emerson 1/2 HP rated motor features a 10% longer stator and rotor than standard 1/2 HP motors. This interior assembly is called ‘stack.’ The more length creates more horse power. It borders the edge of what would be considered a 5/8 HP motor, if there was such a category (which there is not). This longer ‘stack’ enables the motor to run faster and handle the load put on this motor from the high pitched blade. In turn, it keeps the motor running 11% cooler as compared to competitors 1/2 HP motors. Hence, the reason for the Turbo’s very few warranties. All while only drawing 4 AMPs of electricity, equaling a super efficient fan!

• The Problem-Free Guard!

Constructed of 7 guage and 11 guage steel wire that is formed into a continuous one-piece loop formation. This one-piece loop creates added crush proof strength because of the elimination of welded butt joints that can break. No other fan guard withstands the rigors of the show road like the Turbo. Guard complies with OSHA regulations. Front of guard opens so you can easily clean the blades to keep your fan running at its peak performance. More Air ... Less Trouble. Specially coated in black color for a cleaner appearance. SULLIVAN SUPPLY, INC.
