Downside Risk Increases
By Wes Ishmael
“The past few years have been a demanddriven environment where stronger than expected beef demand led to stronger than expected calf and yearling prices,” says Josh Maples, Extension livestock economist at Mississippi State University, in an early-year issue of In the Cattle Markets. “These have been important transition years that coped with the sharp supply increases. Looking ahead, slower herd growth numbers begin to paint a brighter price picture for 2019 and 2020 if domestic demand and exports continue to grow.” If. Continued strength in both domestic and international beef demand could be a tall order, given ongoing geo-political
turmoil threatening domestic and global economic expansion. Domestically, U.S. economic growth last year was the strongest since 2005, according to analysts with CoBank. However, they say consumers, investors, companies and other market participants have become more wary about the near-term future. That’s according to a comprehensive 2019 outlook report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange Division (KED). Looking outside the U.S., global economic growth continues to weaken, according to the latest World Economic Outlook Update from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
IMF projects global economic growth at 3.5% this year and 3.6% next year; 0.2% and 0.1% less than October’s estimate. “Even as the world economy continues to move ahead, it is facing significantly higher risks, some of them related to policy,” explained Christine Lagarde, IMF chair and managing director, at a press conference for the update. “These risks are now increasingly intertwined: think of how higher tariffs and rising uncertainty over future trade policy fed into lower asset prices and higher market volatility. This in turn contributed to tightening financial conditions, including for advanced economies, which is a major risk factor in a world of high debt burdens.”
“Farmers cannot bank on a fourth consecutive year of above-trend crop yields to make up for low commodity prices and rising costs. To steady the agricultural economy, and boost revenues, the sector is dependent on substantive breakthroughs in trade policy.” “Trade uncertainty, rising debt levels and market volatility are threatening to derail the global economy and creating difficult operating environments for U.S. agriculture,” says Dan Kowalski, vice president of CoBank’s KED. “Trade is the outsized risk. Unresolved disputes with Mexico, Canada, Europe and China are the greatest collective threat to the U.S. economy in 2019.” In fact, the KED report points out the value of total U.S. agricultural exports this year is expected to decline $1.9 billion year over year to $141.5 billion, according to USDA projections. Lost soybean exports account for most of the decline. KED analysts also point out current tariffs assessed by the U.S. on steel and aluminum are increasing costs for agricultural producers. Think here in terms of higher prices for such things as grain bins and machinery than would likely otherwise be the case. Plus, the KED folks say in their report, “Farmers cannot bank on a fourth consecutive year of above-trend crop yields to make up for low commodity prices and rising costs. To steady the aricultural economy, and boost revenues, the sector is dependent on substantive breakthroughs in trade policy.” At the same time, the U.S. government shutdown weighed on the domestic economy and markets. CoBank analysts estimate, conservatively, that each week
of the government shutdown reduced first-quarter GDP by 0.05%. As for cattle and beef markets, plenty of information went missing during the month-long shutdown, including World Agricultural Demand Estimates for January, actual daily slaughter data. The January and February Cattle on Feed reports, and the Jan. 1 Cattle inventory report were pushed back at least a month, barring another shutdown. Never mind missing export data and ancillary crop planting and production data. Depending on which economist you consult, the missing data and reports had minimal impact on cattle markets through mid-February because price information continued to be shared by the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). Production Keeps Increasing The pipeline of beef and competing proteins is already full and promises to grow to record levels again this year. Maples explained beef production, expected to grow about 2% this year, would be about 15% more in 2019 than it was in 2015. “This would be the fastest four-year growth since 1973-1977,” Maples said. “With respect to the cattle cycle, recent cowherd trends suggest 2020 could potentially mark the end of the current U.S. cattle inventory build-up. But, it is worth noting that this is looking like a unique
cattle cycle. History might suggest that after herd growth stops, herd declines will follow, but the ingredients for nearterm herd declines are not obvious at this point. Prices have mostly remained at or above profitable levels for cow-calf producers, which does not provide much incentive for liquidation.” He expects herd growth to be flat this year. So, a lot went right and little went wrong for cattle markets last year or the year before, according to Stephen Koontz, agricultural economist at Colorado State University. He notes strong wholesale margins, efficient movement of increased production through the supply chain and exceptional U.S. beef export levels, particularly to Japan and Korea. “But forecasts for 2019 suggest a further 1.8% increase in beef production, a further 2.4% increase in pork production, a 1.3% increase in broiler produc-
“Interest in purchasing breeding stock has been cautious, relative to current spot and futures market pricing for calves and yearlings…
tion, and 0.5% increase in milk production,” Koontz said in a recent issue of In the Cattle Markets. “There will be plenty of protein and fats. While the stock market has been volatile, the underlying indicators of the macro economy have largely remained strong. That is not the case for the rest of the world. There are clear weaknesses in the world economy. There is plenty of protein. And, there appears to be plenty of downside price risk.”
“Continually rising costs in agriculture, though, are expected to squeeze farmers and ranchers, causing further margin erosion and financial stress in 2019.”
Potential Signs of Slowing Expansion “Interest in purchasing breeding stock has been cautious, relative to current spot and futures market pricing for calves and yearlings…Bred cow prices at auctions during the last quarter of 2018 were down 10%-20% from a year earlier in key cattle production regions,” say analysts with the Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC), in the late-January Livestock Monitor. Based on average prices reported by AMS, analysts with LMIC say prices in Georgia were 19% less for cows weighing 1,200-1,300 lbs. and bred 4-6 months. They brought $912.30/head in December, versus $1,119.89 a year earlier. For the same month, mid-age cows in Montana weighing 1,200-1,300 lbs. sold 6% less year over year. “Not surprisingly, Midwest auction cow price changes from late 2017 to late 2018 posted a drop between that of Montana and Georgia; prices at Saint Joseph, MO were down 15%,” say LMIC analysts. Keep in mind, breeding stock markets
in some areas, like Missouri, were pressured by drought. Roads Ahead As for prices this year, at its late-January Outlook, CattleFax projected: steer calf prices (550 lbs.) to average $164/ cwt., which would be $9 less than last year; 750 lb. steers at $147cwt., down $3 from a year earlier; fed steers steady at $117/cwt.; bred cows $1,550/head, down $100; utility cows $55/cwt., down $4. “With agricultural commodity markets depressed by global supply abundance and ongoing trade disputes, farmers and ranchers face the arduous task of cutting production costs,” according to the KED report. “Continually rising costs in agriculture, though, are expected to squeeze farmers and ranchers, causing further margin erosion and financial stress in 2019.” For instance, interest expense in production agriculture increased 21% year over year in 2018, due to increased interest rates and higher debt levels, ac-
cording to CoBank. In the meantime, so far, wholesale beef demand continues with similar strength to last year. “Wholesale beef markets are starting 2019 with a continuation of generally strong prices seen last year,” says Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in his market comments. “For the first three weeks of the year, boxed beef cutout prices are up 2.9% for Choice and 3.4% for Select compared to the same period last year. “In 2018, weekly boxed beef prices averaged 2.2% higher year over year compared to 2017,” Peel explains. “Wholesale beef prices were higher in 2018 despite a projected 2.8% increase in beef production and larger pork and poultry supplies.”

Australian Cattle Producers Lose More Than 300,000 in Flooding After a severe and prolonged drought, Australians in Queensland have been hit with heavy rains over a two-week period in February that resulted in record-breaking floods. And dead cattle.
group AgForce said to CBS. There are 49 million acres of land affected by the flooding, which was expected to continue along parts of significant riverways downstream.
According to CBS News, about half of the country’s 25 million national herd is raised in Queensland, where they estimate 1 in 40 animals were killed in the flooding and muddy aftermath.
Parts of the area received in one week what they’d normally expect in a whole year. Some cattle who survived the initial onset of wet, windy and chilly weather have had to be euthanized, and the staggering loss numbers continue to rise at press time.
“We think that there’s over 300,000 head of cattle that have been lost, drowned or washed away” in the state, Georgie Somerset of farm lobby
Brune Named As ASA 2019 Golden Book Recipient J.W. Brune been named the recipient of the 2019 Golden Book Award. The award recognizes individuals and organiza-
tions that have made significant contributions to the development of the Simmental/Simbrah breeds. The Golden Book
is given on behalf of the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) and is the most prestigious award given by the
American Simmental Association. Brune and his wife, Carol Lyon Brune, DVM, are the owners and managers of White Star Cattle Company. They maintain both a spring and fall-calving herd consisting of purebred to percentage cattle marketed by a variety of means, including private treaty, bull test sales, and breeder group sales. A member of both the Missouri and Kansas Simmental Associations, Brune is also active in numerous other livestock organizations. A veteran of the US Army, he served a tour of duty in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.
Miller Named ASA’s Lifetime Promoter Recipient Ron Miller been named the recipient of the American Simmental Association’s (ASA) 2019 Lifetime Promoter Award. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the development of the Simmental/Simbrah breeds. The Lifetime Promotor is one of the highest awards given by the ASA. For more than five decades, Ron Miller has been an effective voice for the beef industry, including Simmental. Growing up on a farm/ranch at Cambridge, Nebraska, his work with beef cattle began at a very early age. Immediately after high school in the 1960s, he established his own fitting and showing enterprise, exhibiting his own cattle along with those of his clients. Later, he branched out into other aspects of the industry, including cattle hauling and consulting. He terminated his trucking career almost 25 years ago, but not before he transported cattle into every state in the continental US and most Canadian provinces. He has consulted on hundreds of sales across many breeds and offered his assistance and expertise to ensure the smooth running of countless local, state and national livestock expositions, including the renowned National Western in Denver and the American Royal in Kansas City. Partial to Simmental, he has maintained a small herd of select females over the years and holds ASA membership number 3237, issued in the early years of the Association’s existence. Miller has made countless close friends during his lifetime. “It’s the people. The people are the primary reason I still stay involved, people I have met clear across the beef industry,” he said. “A friendly cup of coffee, con-
versation over breakfast or lunch—you can’t believe how much they have meant to me over the years.” Miller recalls working with and for a number of producers who led the way for the breed in America. “I worked Jack Winninger’s first sale in Cody, Wyoming, I was involved with Tom Risinger and Rio Vista in Texas, had a 24-year relationship with Hudson Pines in New York, and worked Gateway Simmental’s first sale in Montana,” he added.
Kansas Family Honored for Historic Angus Herd April Valley Farms has been home to Angus cattle for more than 50 years. Edmund Theis purchased his first Angus heifer near Atchison, Kansas, for a 4-H project. What started as a simple project would be the beginning of April Valley Farms. When Edmund married his wife, Alice, he had already established a small herd of cattle they decided to relocate to Leavenworth, Kansas. This is where they established their registered Angus herd in 1960.
“I chose the Angus breed for a combination of reasons: one being the desire to start a high-quality beef herd with good fertility and maternal qualities,” Edmund said. “Another factor was as a child, I had more than my fair share of milking dairy cows.” Edmund purchased his first registered Angus heifer from Andrew Corpestein. Some other early purchases were from the Leske herd
in Junction City, Kansas, and Laflin Ranch in Olsburg, Kansas. As the family grew, so did the herd. As Edmund’s four sons became actively involved with the herd, Artificial Insemination (AI) and Embryo Transfer (ET) were incorporated into their operation. In the beginning, their cattle were marketed through private treaty sales, but for the past 22 years, an annual production sale has been held.
Mark, Larry and Jerry, three of Edmund’s sons, manage April Valley Farms today, but Edmund is still involved with the herd that consists of 180 spring-calving cows and 190 fall calving cows. The Theis family was recognized by the Kansas Angus Association this year as an honorary member. They also have had many show winning animals on a local, state and national level.

Docility EPD Added to the Suite of Gelbvieh and Balancer® EPDs The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) released the BOLT-powered docility expected progeny difference (EPD) in January 2019. This is the latest update to the extensive suite of EPDs used to accurately describe registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. “The AGA is excited to be able to add docility to the line up of EPDs we offer to help cattlemen and women make selection decisions
when utilizing Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics,” says Megan Slater, AGA interim executive director. “Docility is one of the many AGA EPDs produced through the multi-breed genetic evaluation powered by BOLT, and therefore is directly comparable to several breeds who also participate within the evaluation.” Docility is an important trait that impacts beef operations’ bottom lines in each
sector of the industry. Studies have shown that animals with calmer dispositions are more productive both on the ranch as well as in the feedyard and ultimately exhibit higher carcass values and greater tenderness, among other advantages. Higher docility EPD values for Gelbvieh and Balancer animals indicate a more favorable temperament. Over the past 20 years, the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed has
gained favorable progress in docility on top of a solid foundation of historically docile cattle. However, the range of docility EPDs of active sires proves that there is genetic diversity, which means further progress can be made. It’s also important to note that in herds where temperament is not currently a concern, differences will not be as intensely realized.
Donated AJBA Heifers to be Sold in International Sale
This year, the American Junior Brahman Association (AJBA) will be selling two fantastic heifer lots at the 2019 International Sale in order to help generate funds for the youth of the Brahman breed. The first lot being sold was generously donated by Walters Livestock Enterprises of Brenham, TX. WALTERS VIRGINIA 412 has the royal pedigree to make a solid impact on any herd. The gorgeous second lot being sold to benefit the AJBA was graciously donat-
ed by Rancho Monte Cristo from Friendswood, TX. RMC MONTE MUNECA 44/78 (#975827) is a dark red, big boned female with good rib and lots of natural muscling. Her pedigree includes +MR WINCHESTER MAGNUM 999/3, SRS RED STROKE 552, +MR. 3H X-RAY 825, and the famous CB MS BAILEY’S FANCY 123. This beautiful, dark red, halter broke female is ready to add to your ranch today!
“We are honored and thankful for the generous donations of Walters Livestock Enterprises and Rancho Monte Cristo,” said Shelby Schiefelbein, Director of Youth Programs for the American Brahman Breeders Association. “Both of these heifers are top quality females whose proceeds will greatly benefit the youth of the Brahman breed and whose genetics will greatly benefit the ranches that purchase them.”

GET IT
TOGETHER 5 Steps to Organize Your Digital Photos
By Sharla Ishmael
Truth or Dare: Would you
sometime in the future. Also, rather get your mud boots most livestock photographers offer discounts if you SEPTEMBER 12-23, 2018 \\ OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA stuck on the way to the buy more than one at a time, so maybe put a list together trough with two full buckets of several photos from the of feed and 10 hungry heifsame shutterbug and get a ers in your pocket or spend good deal. half a day looking for photos you need urgently for an ad – photos you know you have, but can’t find – when you have 50 other things on the day’s To Do list? They’re both frustrating situations. At least one of them can be avoided. In today’s digital world, whether you need photos for your cattle business or you’re documenting your family’s life together, you need a plan to conquer the chaos.
Step 1.
Make sure you HAVE the photos you need. If you sell show steers, heifers, bulls, seedstock or anything that requires advertising …. BUY YOUR PHOTOS FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER. You know when somebody wins a big show with an animal out of your program that you will want that picture in your ad. So, go ahead and get online and buy that picture! Do it before you forget, no matter how soon your ad will run. You probably want to put it up on social media anyway. And it’s really bad form to use photos (even on Facebook) with the photographer’s watermark on them. It tends to aggravate that photographer, whose help you might need to look up a photo from 10 years ago
Also, yes magazines can pull photos from their show results – sometimes. But they do have to pay the photographer for advertising usage and will add that price to your bill. What you may not realize is that slows down the process of your ad getting built. Because the organized folks who have everything together when they send it in will get their ads to the designer first. Yours will be set aside until we have time to do your picture shopping for you. And, there are some photographers that don’t ID their photos on their websites. So, you can tell me is was the Reserve Maintainer in Ring B of the Super Duper Jackpot show, but unless there is a banner I can blow up big enough to read, I won’t know what photo to get for you. Save us both some time and get it taken care of on the front end.
Step 2.
Gather up all your pictures into one place. Most of us have photos stored on our phones, our tablets and our computers. Maybe even old ones that we don’t use anymore and possibly an external hard drive, cloud service or just social media accounts. To get started, you really need to gather all those photos into one place – probably your com-

puter if you have room or the hard drive/ cloud storage program of your choice. You can’t organize your collection until you know what you have. If you have a lot of photos, particularly high-resolution photos (the kind we use in print publications) you will need a lot of storage space to keep them, especially if you also have some videos you want to keep. For The Show Circuit, we use Dropbox as our hub for all things digital. For one thing, we can share large files easily between staff, designers and outside agencies. If the photo or file is too big for email, we can easily send you a link to open it. There are tons of others, iCloud, Google Photos, Flickr, etc. Depending on whether you’re an Apple or Android user and how much free space you can get (or whatever your budget is), just try a few and see what you think is easiest to use. If you happen to be a Pinterest user, there is a great pin from Refined Rooms that gives you a 10 Week Digital Photo Organizing Challenge. Each week you have a different part of an overall plan to accomplish, since we all know this is a job that probably can’t be done in a day. They even have a handy checklist to remind you of places where you could have photos stored that you’ve forgotten – old CDs anyone? And they also have links to help you figure out how to transfer photos from your phone to your computer if you need that type of instruction. They also make a really good point about cloud services. “I’m a firm believer that you shouldn’t entrust your original set of digital images to any third-party service. Companies go out of business, change their terms of service, and experience service outages. By choosing a digital photo hub that’s locally based, you guarantee that you’ll always have access to your photos when you want them.” – Refined Rooms
As well, a follower to their page makes another good point. In the event of some huge catastrophe (like an EMP attack that takes out the company’s server) you might want to go ahead and print your most important photos. To be ultra-safe, keep them in a safety deposit box at the bank. And remember, if you’re not using a cloud service but some type of physical backup at home, the rate of change in technology can make your device obsolete. For example, at the magazine we used to keep our monthly archives on CD disks then mail those disks out to our designers. The last time I bought an Apple laptop it no longer had a CD drive, so I had to buy a mobile CD/DVD reader just to be able to access those old files. Is it worth buying a professional’s time? If you just don’t want to mess with this whole project and you can afford to, there are professional services that will help get your photos gathered, backed up, cleaned up and organized into a coherent system. While convenient, it can get pricey. “The cost varies depending on the level of organization you want and the number of photos you have. For the DIYer, assuming that you already have a computer, you can organize your photos for about $150. This covers the cost of a cloud backup service and an external hard drive. “Professional photo organization can range from $1,500 to $10,000 and up. Some photo organizers charge by the hour, while others charge by the project. When working with a professional, the costs include the backup options, the organizer’s time and any additional organization tools, such as a photo management software program.” – Houzz.com Backup options Whether you gathered up your own pics or paid someone to do it, backup is an essential part of this process. Again,
there are a multitude of options from a thumb drive or other external storage device to cloud services. For example, there’s a product called Picture Keeper that backs up your images when you plug it into your computer. For us, that’s another reason I like Dropbox because you can set it to synch your files on your computer with their cloud. Not only is it good backup, it allows you to access those files from your smartphone or tablet anywhere in the world you can get a connection.
Step 3.
Sort and Categorize Now that you have your entire photo collection in one spot, you’ll have to decide on an organization system and clean out duplicates or bad photos you don’t need. This is where you’re probably better off to DIY the chore unless you can hire someone with livestock experience. The right file system for you depends very much on how you plan to use them in the future. For example, you could organize files by date, show, sale, pedigree, herd number, you name it. Whatever system you use should make it easy for you to find a photo later on. Also, don’t forget to rename photos to make them easier to find and easier for somebody else to identify. For example, instead the AB_0565 your camera named the photo, rename the file to SCC Zsa Zsa 930 (my first show heifer by the way). Or for sale pics, maybe Monopoly x Char-cross steer. Another tip, particularly on herd bull pics, remember to label photos likely to be updated in the future. So, if your bull is named Hot Shot and you have a yearling pic, rename the photo to indicate his age. When he’s older and you have a new photo of him, name it Hot Shot-mature. That way you won’t accidentally send the wrong photo for your ad. Some photo management software programs also allow you to tag photos – location, people, etc. Google Photos, which I use for personal pics, automatically
sorts photos so I can easily pull together a collage of our cats, or my daughter’s basketball games, etc. It’s actually kind of fun to play around with if you have a few minutes. It can even recognize faces and help you search more efficiently.
Step 4. Maintain
As you add photos to your digital library, you’ll need to stick with your plan to keep things organized, tidy and backed up. Plus, it’s probably good to set aside time every so often just to go through your library and keep or cull or add information. You might even decide to adjust your filing system once you get going. The main thing is don’t get overwhelmed or give up. Your photos should bring you joy, whether it’s remembering a special heifer or the day your kid won the State Fair or whatever. That’s part of the magic of photography – capturing a memory you want to savor.
Step 5. Share
What’s the point of having a nicely organized library of digital photos if nobody else sees them? Livestock people love to look at old photos of show animals to see how type preference has changed, so share them on social media! That will help drive people to your ranch’s Facebook or Instagram page in a flash. Make something special for a VIP customer. There are all kinds of photo memorabilia that can be created now, from photobooks to a coffee mug with your face on it. If you sold a steer to a special customer, particularly one you’d like to have repeat business with, make some kind of photo gift with one of their winning pics on it and send it to them. A little thoughtfulness goes a long way! Here’s a tip for sharing with family members: Amazon Prime membership gives you the ability to have up to five family members share a “Family Vault,” where
everybody can upload and see each other’s photos. And, it comes with unlimited full-resolution backup, which is also good for the pics the grandparents want to print. Just download the Amazon photos app; you can even use Alexa with it.
“
“I’m a firm believer that you shouldn’t entrust your original set of digital images to any third-party service. Companies go out of busi-
Finally, if you have a streaming app, you can stream your photos from your phone or tablet to your big screen TV in order to see them better or show to a group of people. There’s no limit to the ways your photos can be shared with friends, family and customers.
ness, change their terms of service,
Like most things, you get out of your photos what you put into them. Who knows? You might decide to learn how to use Photoshop and edit your pics for all kinds of uses. Maybe make family calendars for Christmas or something, who knows what fun you could have.

and experience service outages. By choosing a digital photo hub that’s locally based, you guarantee that you’ll always have access to your photos when you want them.”
“
Obviously, this article was geared to the amateurs among us who remember when we still used film. So, there are advanced versions of everything mentioned here. The hardest part is just getting started. So, like dieting, pick a day to get started, make sure you have all the supplies you need and have a plan. Then the next time an advertising deadline comes around and you need a certain photo, you’ll know exactly where to find it and then have more time in your day for the other 49 chores calling your name. Let’s just hope feeding in the mud isn’t one of them!

IT'S SHOW SEASON By Ryan Lane
The time of year has rolled around

and just giving up on unloading tack out of the trailer – it’s show season. We have more shows than ever scheduled this year all across Arkansas. These shows will be open to anyone who would like to show, AJCA member or not. As the quality of shows go up, so is the need for new members and more entries. If you have ever wanted to show or to start showing, now is the time to do so. This year is

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
130 March 2019 • theshowcircuit.com
By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting
Cold Weather Cattle Management the cows’ diet with 3 to 4 lbs. of whole shelled corn, distillers grain (DGS) or soy hulls. In this scenario, I prefer soy hulls, as they are 8% to 9% crude protein and contain highly digestible fiber. Supplementing with DGS just adds too much protein. Sometimes, during extreme cold weather, just providing a big round bale or small square bales of grass hay to supplement the alfalfa baleage will increase the heat increment enough to “keep the cows warm.”
As I write this column, it is late January and a Polar Vortex is covering the central U.S. This morning it was 20 degrees below zero with 40 degrees below zero wind chill. Only one water fountain was frozen, and it was just the float valve – it thawed in only five minutes with a hot air gun. Cattle are truly remarkable creatures. The cold really does not bother them much if their hair coat is dry, they can get out of the wind and their rumen is full. Hence, feeding management is SOOO important as the environmental temperature drops below zero.
SCENARIO 2:
Everyone knows cattle should be fed more energy when it is cold, but what type of feed is the most effective to maintain body temperature and performance? Old timers will suggest feeding more hot feed to increase energy intake. From a lay person’s point of view a hot feed is an energy dense feed (shelled corn is generally called a hot feed). However, from a nutritionist perspective a hot feed is a feedstuff that results in a high heat increment and those feedstuffs are generally not energy dense (forages have a high heat increment).
Again, these cows are probably consuming dry matter as a maximum percent of body weight. Supplementing the diet with shelled corn or soyhulls will increase energy intake. Again, I prefer to supplement with soyhulls. If the crude protein content of the grass hay is low (below 9%) my preference is to supplement the diet with DGS. The DGS is high in crude protein, low in starch, and high in digestible fiber.
During cold weather, the heat increment potential of a feedstuff can be as important as the energy density and digestibility of a feedstuff, especially regarding the feedstuffs potential to keep an animal warm. In warm weather environments, heat increment (the energy produced during the digestion process) is considered a waste or an energy loss; but during extreme cold weather, heat increment can help keep cattle warm. Heat increment/energy density/digestibility are interrelated and their proportional values are related to the diet (feedstuffs fed) and the ration (amount fed: 24 hour period). As an example, I provide the following scenarios.
SCENARIO 1:
Beef cows are self-fed big round bales of alfalfa haylage (balelage).
These cows are consuming adequate to excess crude protein and are probably consuming their maximum intake as a percent of body weight. To increase energy intake, supplement
Beef cows are self-fed big round bales of grass hay that are around 12% crude protein.
SCENARIO 3:
Beef cows are limit-fed or programfed a base diet of corn silage and a source of crude protein (DGS, soybean meal or a commercial protein tub).
In extreme cold, these cows need more dry matter intake. Increasing the ration of corn silage may be possible if the cows are consuming less than 4% of their body weight. However, if the cows are already consuming 4% of their body weight as corn silage, then supplementing the diet with more shelled corn or DGS may be the best option. My preference is to add/increase DGS in the diet.
“One of the most important things to remember is that if you are housing cows that have calved with cows that have not calved, you are either overfeeding the cows that have not calved or you are under feeding the cows that have calved. “
SCENARIO 4:
Finishing cattle on a high concentrate diet that contains 10% or less roughage.
Increase the percent forage {corn silage or ground hay or ground whatever (straw, stalks, etc.)] in the TMR to 15%. The forage should be added a day in advance of the cold wave and continue until the weather moderates. Adding fiber to the diet will increase the heat increment of the diet and the increased fiber may help keep the cattle on feed during extreme cold weather. One of the most important things to remember is that if you are housing cows that have calved with cows that have not calved, you are either overfeeding the cows that have not calved or you are under feeding the cows that have calved. The day the cow calves, her crude protein requirement doubles and her TDN requirement increases 50%. To maximize feeding efficiency, these two groups of cows should be housed and fed separately. This is text book rhetoric. A practical management technique for a smaller scale producer who does not have sufficient facilities to separate calved cows from pregnant cows is to have a tight calving season. If all the cows will calve within a 45 day or less time frame, these two groups of cows can be fed together as their energy and protein requirements will be more similar, i.e. the last 30 day of gestation and the first 30 days of lactation. Anyway, here is to spring! I really like summer, especially when it is January and 20 degrees below zero. Tips for young Beef donor development from Trans Ova Genetics
Maximize Genetic Potential: Producing embryos from young heifers gives you the opportunity to maximize genetic gain and capture value on your genetics sooner. Young Donor Expectations: • Age of first OPU is dependent on the size (weight and height) of the young donor. Most young donors can start embryo production as early as 10-13-months of age. Increased results tend to come with age. • Trans Ova data would indicate that there is little difference seen in young donor conception rates after IVF procedures compared to conception rates in young donors that have not had an IVF procedure prior to breeding age. Often IVF procedures can be done up to 100-120 days of gestation and will not increase the average chances of fetal loss in the first 100 days. • Young cycling donors average slightly less embryos per collection com-
146 March 2019 • theshowcircuit.com
pared to mature cows. • Collections can occur on a 2-week cycle depending on production and age.
Young Donor Management Practices for Success Donor selection, appropriate starting age and husbandry management are critical for the success of your young donor program. Nutrition Management: Oocyte quality is maximized with a good nutrition program. It is recommended to have a simple, balanced diet containing high roughage sources. If possible, avoid distiller’s by-products. Rations should supply adequate protein and energy for growth. Excessive levels of protein and concentrates can be limiting to embryo production success. Additionally, the young donor should always have access to high-quality mineral program.
Management of Environment: Heifers should be managed in groups of similar body condition and size, with adequate pen space with access to fresh water and dry bedding. Young heifers seem to be more sensitive to stressors and environmental changes than mature cows. Young Donor Selection: Genetics nutrition and age plays a role in the success in the young donor. We recommend monitoring the cyclicity of your heifer prior to production in order to maximize your young donors’ performance. While all risks associated with any advanced reproductive technology cannot be completely eliminated, the Trans Ova team has minimized the occurrences of reproductive injury, infection and in rare instances, death associated with these procedures.

GluCoat is the next level or generation to a fat source or supplement. You will never use a fat product again! • It’s a sugar product, not a fat product such as vegetable oil. Sugar speeds up the rumen for better feed intake. • It contains Cell-rate with millions of dollars worth of nucleotides and nucleic acids studies behind it. • Also contains a refined flavoured fish oil which is great for skin and hair at the same time provides a great source of the Omega Fatty Acids for joint health. • B Vitamins (B12, B6, Riboflavin, Niacin) which has been known to increase appetite. • Molasses base so cattle, sheep, and goats love it. They will feel better, act better, and their eating habits will change. GluCoat will keep you ready for the ring!
Extreme Natural Stride is the most comprehensive formula for join support on the market today! In the show ring, soundness is a Necessity and with the advancements in genetics and performance, we have stressed the structure of show livestock to the limits. Whether it’s swelling, join pain, flexibility, wear and tear, or other basic movement issues, Extreme Natural Stride is your simple solution. Renowned as a natural lubricant, Cetyl Myristoleate is an essential component in Extreme Natural Stride and along with 9 other key ingredients Extreme is an all in one multi-ingredient product that attacks a joint from all directions. You are guaranteed the most bang for your buck!
Don’t use something that only gives you a one shot deal at one show. Use Hide And Hair. It gives you a much larger window of hair growth to broaden your options on shows you might go. Hide And Hair is the ONLY choice in hair growth products if you are serious about showing. It’s time to be thinking about getting ready for summer shows. Use for 90 to 120 days and for optimal results start feeding 120 days out. Don’t get left behind, use what the champions are using!!
