Sullivan’s TM
• Nothing matches the Turbo for Air POWER! The Turbo pushes air 5,560 feet per minute at an incredible 1,740 RPMs and an industry leading 8,453 CFM’s. This is 22% faster and harder than the other livestock fans. Keeping your livestock cool depends on providing a push of high velocity air power to your animal. • The Dominant Motor Performance ... We have over-engineered the Turbo motor for added performance. The premium Nidec-Emerson1/2 HP sealed ball bearing motor features a very important component, a 10% larger internal stator and rotor ‘stack’ for more horse power than standard 1/2 HP motors. This extra ‘stack’ powers it to run faster than any other livestock fan that we know of. As an added benefit, the Turbo motor runs 11% cooler than competitors 1/2 HP motors, this allows cooler air output from the Turbo. All while only drawing 4 AMP’s of electricity, equalling a super efficient fan!
Sullivan’s TM
The Showbarn Fan is specifically designed for your livestock showbarn. It runs quiet and its air flow is dispersed in a wider air pattern. You’ll be pleased with our Showbarn Fan features: • The deep cage design allows for less friction between blade and cage resulting in a superior quiet fan with awesome air flow coverage throughout your barn. • Super efficient, heavy duty ½ horsepower ball bearing motor draws only 4 amps. • The improved deep cage has been strengthened with heavier duty wire to add durability. • Front hinged cage opens to provide easy access to clean grime from your blades. • Specially coated cage is black in color for a cleaner appearance that blends with your display. Some deep cage designs that are white easily show dirt and grime and are subject to fragile wires on the cage.

GluCoat is the next level or generation to a fat source or supplement. You will never use a fat product again! • It’s a sugar product, not a fat product such as vegetable oil. Sugar speeds up the rumen for better feed intake. • It contains Cell-rate with millions of dollars worth of nucleotides and nucleic acids studies behind it. • Also contains a refined flavoured fish oil which is great for skin and hair at the same time provides a great source of the Omega Fatty Acids for joint health. • B Vitamins (B12, B6, Riboflavin, Niacin) which has been known to increase appetite. • Molasses base so cattle, sheep, and goats love it. They will feel better, act better, and their eating habits will change. GluCoat will keep you ready for the ring!
Extreme Natural Stride is the most comprehensive formula for join support on the market today! In the show ring, soundness is a Necessity and with the advancements in genetics and performance, we have stressed the structure of show livestock to the limits. Whether it’s swelling, join pain, flexibility, wear and tear, or other basic movement issues, Extreme Natural Stride is your simple solution. Renowned as a natural lubricant, Cetyl Myristoleate is an essential component in Extreme Natural Stride and along with 9 other key ingredients Extreme is an all in one multi-ingredient product that attacks a joint from all directions. You are guaranteed the most bang for your buck!
Don’t use something that only gives you a one shot deal at one show. Use Hide And Hair. It gives you a much larger window of hair growth to broaden your options on shows you might go. Hide And Hair is the ONLY choice in hair growth products if you are serious about showing. It’s time to be thinking about getting ready for summer shows. Use for 90 to 120 days and for optimal results start feeding 120 days out. Don’t get left behind, use what the champions are using!!

A Winning Combination
from: Eric Walker, Prairie Grove, AR I’ve been asked numerous times
“What makes a champion?” My response is very simple! . . . . . . . . It takes
five things! 1. Quality animal to start with 2. Hard work at the barn working hair and focused on the small things 3. A little bit of luck 4. A good showman (hard work at the barn)

5. A good nutritional program and for us that starts with ADM products. When choosing a feed company you need to understand that it is the center of your entire project! Without proper nutrition, your calf will not reach its genetic potential! Every bag of MoorMan’s® ShowTec® we open is consistent and for us that is key!!! Always fresh and a perfectly balanced feed! Sure, you can probably buy feed cheaper, but do you want a champion or a deal? For us we want to feed champions so we choose MoorMan’s ShowTec!

Get Hair Growth Fast “I used ProHair100 for the last few months with great success. I noticed how the hair stayed softer, had more bloom and had tremendous hair growth in a shorter period of time on a steer that was light on hair when starting ProHair100. No I-80, no Ali and he works awesome on those pedigree's! Data Bank is extremely well balanced smooth made individual that has an undeniably great look. He hails from some of the greatest cow families in the breed who have shown their power in the show ring but most importantly in the pasture. In an era when the search for a purebred Maine option has been somewhat limited Data Bank is the answer. He is awesome footed, smooth jointed and is athletic as you can make a mature bull, he's square made and extremely soft middled. Look for his offspring to compete and perform at the highest levels and carry on a great family tradition. Contact Tessa Schotte for all your Griswold Semen needs 785-268-0470.

RURAL
CHANGE MAKER Nebraska native Brent Comstock offers encouragement to rural youth and communities
W
hen one thinks of a rural community with few – if any – stoplights, no Starbucks and a small population, the words opportunity and possibilities may not be the first to come to mind. But Auburn, Neb. native Brent Comstock wants to prove otherwise. Comsotck, who started a computer repair business in his hometown of 3,500 people at the age of 12, is now a 21-year-old college student whose business has morphed into providing digital and web services to rural campaigns, causes and companies. He has employees and clients across the country. In addition to seeing his company BCom Solutions thrive, Comstock is on a mission to encourage others – especially youth – to find the possibilities in their rural communities. Here’s the advice he suggests to see rural possibilities with fresh eyes. Don’t take no for an answer Comstock admits that “no” is a word he heard often as a teenager. He shares, “As a teen I heard, ‘No
78 May 2017 • theshowcircuit.com
you can’t be successful or smart or a multimillionaire in a small town.’” He suspects other rural youth often experience that stereotype as well. However, Comstock suggests hearing the word “no” should not deter anyone from pursuing their ideas. In his own case, he adapted the mindset of aiming to be a “problem-solver.” Specifically, he recognized a decade ago that rural communities lacked technology and technology support. Thus, he pursued helping individuals with their home computers – and eventually businesses, organizations and rural politicians came on board as clients seeking to enhance their digital presence and message. To others looking at pursuing new ideas or a potential business startup within their rural community, he advises looking for problems and brainstorming solutions. In that process he underscores a few key components, including: - Listen to what people may say, but also study their actions and behaviors. Comstock says to look for “what excites people” and then strive to amplify that.
By Kindra Gordon
- Build relationships. He suggests having “coffee shop” sessions between youth and the senior generation. “Meet with community members and don’t have an agenda, see what you learn. It’s about relationships first and then working together,” says Comstock. - Change your vernacular. “Instead of saying ‘but’ use ‘and,’” he suggests. For instance, identifying “We have this problem, but…” vs. “We have this problem, and…” By using “and” instead of “but,” Comstock says, “You’ll be amazed at how the viewpoint changes from a negative to a positive connotation. …When you use ‘and’ you become a problem solver.” Talent, passion, people In addition to those initial steps toward identifying opportunities, Comstock believes there are three factors integral to an individual’s success – no matter their location. These include: 1) Talent. Comstock points out that today ev-
erything is online. Thus, “It’s easy to know things,” he says. However, he suggests knowing things is not as critical as having a true talent or skill. “You have to have a talent – be the best at something,” he says. He also advises, “You have to hone in on that talent in rural communities. It’s easy to sign up for 30 things, but identify your talent and focus on developing it instead of being spread thin.” He suggests pondering the question: How is being spread thin impacting my talent? 2) Passion. Hand-in-hand with talent, Comstock says, “You have to love what you are doing.” He adds, “If you have the talent and passion, I guarantee you can find opportunity.” 3) People. Comstock says this one may sound obvious, but he says the caveat is that it’s less about you and more about others. “This is about the people we surround ourselves with, people who are smarter than you. You have to find mentors, people who will challenge you or you will fall back. The people you surround yourself with are so important,” explains Comstock. He surmises, “People, passion and talent – if you are missing one of those three things, it’s difficult to move ahead.” An additional piece of advice that Comstock shares is this: “We all want to be successful, we just have different ways of defining success. One of my mentors told me it’s so important to live your own life.” Comstock likes to use the quote: “It is better to fail at your own life, than succeed at someone elses.” Prioritize Lastly, Comstock emphasizes that it is important for every individual to know their priorities. In today’s tech-laden world, Comstock notes, “It is so easy to get distracted. We consume millions of pieces of data
from our phone, radio, newspapers, Facebook.” And he adds, “Especially for students coming out of high school, there are a lot of messages coming at you.”
Additional Insight From A Rural Entreprenuer
Thus, Comstock says it’s important to have a system to identify what’s valid and what’s important to you and what’s not.
Nebraska entrepreneur Brent Comstock hopes to see other youth in rural communities survive and thrive through pursuing their own innovative ideas just as he has. He offers several nuggets of advice:
As one strategy to help prioritize, he suggests picking a set number of people – three to five –who will provide you with advice and information to help you make difficult decisions. “Choose people who you know and trust for your best interest.” Additionally, Comstock says weekly it’s important to purge. He likes to use the analogy: “The garbage truck comes once a week.” Comstock explains, “It’s easy for each of us to get caught up in what I consider trash – being distracted by problems or dwelling on something that upset us. So once a week, I suggest you throw it away; get rid of it. Don’t pout or complain. Throw it out and start anew.” Comstock likes to apply this same principle to other aspects of life as well. He explains, “It’s easy to beat an idea to the ground. So if you have ideas you don’t use within a year, it’s time to toss it. That goes for stuff, relationships, and roles on boards, too. If you don’t use it or get anything from it, leave it or throw it out.” Lastly, Comstock encourages individual from rural communities to embrace their uniqueness – and share their stories with others. “Telling your story is important for people to know what occurs in small towns,” he says. Likewise, Comstock says there’s often a belief – especially toward youth – that “if we achieve success in rural communities, you then need to go somewhere bigger or better.” But he concludes, “If you think population is the solution to your problems, that’s false.”
• Comstock says identifying rural opportunities should not be hindered by focusing on the population base, rather, he emphasizes it’s essential to identify the customer base. • Likewise, he has found it virtually impossible to be a member of a rural community, while also trying to be a change maker in a rural community. He says, “It’s impossible to do both. You have to do one or the other.” • Looking ahead, Comstock suggests rural business owners must be willing to adapt and change. He has done this with his company – realizing that computer repair is no longer integral to his business, he stopped offering that service a year ago. Comstock suggests having the ability to listen and change are essential to long-term business success. • Comstock notes that failure is part of any process. However, he says there can be positives from that experience. He notes, “When you fail, you’ll weed out those who are not committed, but you’ll find those who are passionate.” • Comstock is a proponent of giving to communities. Rather than “give back” he suggests, just “give.” He says one way to do that while also engaging your community is to share your talent or resources by teaching others a skill. • A tip for older generations looking to involve the younger generation (aka Millennials) Comstock says it is important to recognize that most youth are action oriented. They want to “do now and learn later,” he explains. Therefore, asking them to “sit on a board” is not exciting to them. Instead, Comstock suggests, “Change the term or project and give responsibility to the younger generation by focusing on the action and asking if they will lead an event or cause.” • Finally, Comstock says of utmost importance is having a mindset toward “continual improvement.”

Missouri CLUB CALF ASSOCIATION
This year the Battle of the Breeds show was a huge success, we added a lot of new things this year! One of those included our snapchat filter and many of the young exhibitors enjoyed that greatly and we believe that is something we are going to have in the next coming years again. This show wouldn’t have been possible without all the people behind the scenes. Mostly, we would like to thank all of our sponsors this year, because without their generous donations this show wouldn’t have awarded so many cash prizes as well has other awards. Another thank you goes out to the scholarship committee! Without them, this show wouldn’t have reached so many young exhibitors and we are very excited about the youth of our organization. They are the future of agriculture. One last big thank you goes out to the MCCA junior board! They do so much behind the scenes to put this show on for the youth. We can’t express our thanks again to everyone who help make this show a success. We would like you to look into the future for our scholarship deadline this summer. We will be awarding one $500 scholarship. Must be a MCCA member. Check out our website for guidelines! Also, be checking with the updated points for this year at www.missouriclubcalfassoc. com and like us on Facebook! Bryana Public Relations Chair

aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.
AJCA
BOARD MEMBER PROFILE
Meet Yo u r A J CA Tre as u re r – L og a n S i g mon Age: 16 Hometown: Berryville, Arkansas I live on a 300-acre cattle farm between Green Forest and Berryville, Arkansas where my family and I run 150 head of Simmental-influenced cattle. Type of cattle: Purebred and Percentage Simmental heifers and bulls How did your family get into the Simmental business? In 1994, my grandpa gave my parents a Simmental cow as a wedding present. How has AJCA affected your life? I have learned a lot through the AJCA since I joined back in 2009, and I have made many friends. I often try to encourage younger members to step out, meet new people and make new friends, as those friendships will last a lifetime. AJCA has taught me leadership skills and the responsibility of working and caring for livestock. Who is your role model? One of the biggest role models in my life is probably my older sister Kylee. She is a sophomore at the University of Arkansas and is a two-time winner
98 May 2017 • theshowcircuit.com
of the AJCA Overall High Point Exhibitor of the YearJason Bertschy Memorial Award. Kylee has always helped me with working with my calves. Kylee also helped me with preparing and studying for the educational contests at regionals and nationals. What is your responsibility as an AJCA Board member? I am responsible for coordinating the solicitation of sponsors that support AJCA. The goal for this year’s sponsorships is $12,000. Sponsors’ generous donations assist in providing college scholarships to members, as well as helps pay for year-end awards that consist of trophy belt buckles for all breed and reserve breed champion high point exhibitors. Personal AJCA goals for year: My leadership goal to be selected as president-elect at the end of this year. My show goal is to earn the Supreme Overall Bull in the Top 5 competition.

BioZyme® Names Kevin Arand as Area Sales Manager in Central/Northern Wisconsin Northern Minnesota -- Kevin Arand, Madison, Wisconsin, is now the Area Sales Manager in central and northern Wisconsin and northern Minnesota for BioZyme® Inc. He has been working for the company for a year, previously serving the dairy sector. In his role as an ASM, he will work to develop new and build upon current dealer/partner and customer relations while promoting the BioZyme line of products. “I am really looking forward to getting out and working with the producers, finding out about their problems, making their prob-
lems my own and finding answers for them as they relate to animal health and nutrition,” Arand said. Arand has a strong background in animal nutrition. He earned his degree in Animal Science and Nutrition from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He then worked for WS Ag Center in Columbus, Wisconsin, where he helped formulate diets for dairy cattle, dairy goats and cow-calf producers, as well as show livestock of all species. He grew up raising and showing cattle in Northern Illinois, and still likes to help livestock exhibitors custom
formulate diets for their project animals. “I really enjoy the people I get to work with and culture of the company at BioZyme,” he said. “We have a great staff with versatile experiences. VIEW FROM A VET
Treating Baby Calves with Broken Limbs
W
ith calving season in full swing, I thought it prudent to discuss traumatic injuries to the lower legs of calves. Most often these injuries occur during dystocia (difficult birth) with incorrectly placed obstetrical straps or chains and or due to forceful extraction attempts. Other times, limb fractures occur due to older cattle stepping on a calf as it lies on the ground, especially in confinement situations. Limb fractures in small calves usually occur in the lower third of the leg. The distal metacarpal/ metatarsal (cannon bone) above the fetlock (ankle) and most often involve the growth plate area. Lower Limb Fracture Care In all instances, traumatic injury as described should be examined and diagnosed by a veterinarian when possible. Treatment of these injuries include analgesics and anti-inflamma-

tories (pain/swelling) as well as antibiotics along with proper immobilization. When it is not practical to get immediate veterinary care, some action may be taken to reduce further damage until proper care may be attained. For those injuries caused by forced extraction, compression bandaging with splint application is most important initially. During mechanical-assisted delivery attempts, crushing injuries can occur to the vascular/nerve supply at the fracture site. Although it may not be readily apparent initially. The calf should be observed closely for signs of poor blood flow closely for signs of poor blood flow for several days after the injury. Evidence of vascular injury will be discoloration of tissue, cool to the touch and persistent tissue swelling. When using compression bandages with splints; bandages should be changed every other day, as shifting of the bandage can cause undue pressure and necrosis over the fetlock or behind the knee.
Once swelling has resolved and blood supply is assured a longer palpation external fixation may be removed. Upper Limb Fracture Fracture of the radius or tibia (the long bones above the knee or hock) are a bit more challenging. These two may be repaired with the external fixation, but once again we must remember the joint above joint below rule. They can heal well with external fixation but casting alone will not work unless incorporated with transfixation pinning. The Thomas Splint is a very handy device to aid in immobilization of the limb. It is a bit more difficult for the young calf to manage but with assistance the calf can manage successfully. Use of this device necessitates the supporting limb is bandaged as it will require excessive loading. Incorporated with casting, the Thomas Splint can be an effective device in the repair of an upper limb fracture.

The Great Need BY LINDSAY ALLEN
T
he need for students to pursue science, technology, math and engineering (STEM) fields is great. The need for rural animal veterinarians is great. The need to prepare and lay a foundation for students as they prepare for a career is great. For all these reasons and more, there has been an increase in the number of veterinary certifications and course work for high school students. With the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting a 9% growth (faster than average) in veterinarian jobs between 2014 and 2024, the timing for these certifications is perfect to help meet demand. “The need for industry certifications has grown in the past decade. At the local, state and federal levels, Career and Technical Education (CTE) (the umbrella organization which encompasses agricultural science education) programs are being charged with offering students certifications, which are identified and respected by business and industry partners,” says Clayton Franklin, vice president of brand management for CEV Multimedia, Ltd., which provides curriculum and educational resources for the agricultural science and technology sector. “As state departments of education develop accountability systems for these CTE programs, the number of students who achieve industry certifications is being considered as a measure of student success and program quality. Because of this, administrators and educators are searching for innovative ways to provide students with certification opportunities.” What resulted from iCEV, the online platform for educational resources, being brought in to help meet the needs was a partnership with Elanco to develop the Elanco Veterinary Medical Applications certification. This online certification enhances the next generation of animal health professionals and further expands student learning opportunities and experiences in CTE programs. Enrolled students have the opportunity to view materials and watch demonstrations from practicing veterinarians on both large and small animals and offers over 20 lessons with topics including veterinary medical terms and terminology, animals and society, veterinary laws and ethics, common veterinary medical equipment, veterinary medical practices, various animal anatomy lessons and much more. Obtaining the certification entails several steps, all pointing towards a solid foundation of veterinary medicine. Students are asked to complete the 22 lessons, or modules, and the exam that follows each module. Once all 22 are completed, the student can then access the final examination, where a passing grade is required.
“This can be self-taught or instructor-led. Most of the industry-backed certifications offered through iCEV are meant to coincide with a course commonly taught within an agricultural science classroom. So, as students are completing regular coursework, in this case enrolled in a Veterinary Science class, they are completing the required modules for the certification as well,” said Franklin. The video and slide presentation modules were produced in collaboration with practicing veterinarians for both small and large animals. Team members at Elanco helped choose the required modules for the certification, as well as helped in the development of the certification exam to make sure it was vetted by industry leaders and on an appropriate level to help students succeed. This certification, which began in January of 2016, has already seen students from all over the United States enroll and complete the course. These same students are setting the stage for future internships and college course work through the completion and passing of each module. At New Castle Career Center in New Castle, Indiana, instructor Melody Warner has paired her veterinary science classes with the Veterinary Medical Applications Certification, creating an opportunity to expand her student’s learning. “I am always searching for ways to move my students forward and this program reinforces the curriculum and brings a different perspective to my students,” she says. Still in her first year of implementing the certification as part of the course work, she has had 26 students enroll and 13 pass the certification, with the remaining students scheduled to test this month and she is hoping they will follow in the footsteps of her former students who have gone on to veterinary school and others who have become Certified Veterinary Assistants (CVA), herdsmen and animal behaviorists. “According to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), nearly all veterinary schools require and expect a minimum of 400 hours of animalrelated experience before admittance,” Franklin says, “Additionally, all veterinarians search for employees with animal experience and a deep background in animal science and biology. The Veterinary Medical Applications Certification, endorsed by Elanco, provides students with a solid understanding of veterinary science and veterinary medical applications.” Another alternative for students considering a field in veterinary medicine is the Veterinary Science Certification Program, which offers curriculum in 46 states and is May 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

managed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases, under the direction of Dr. Joe Mask. This program is designed for students age 12 and up and requires completion of the curriculum, in addition to a minimum of 500 apprenticeship hours under the direction of a veterinarian or credentialed veterinary technician. “The goal is to help students understand the field of Veterinary Science and further their career development and work force readiness. We give them the math and science side of the job and help them decide if this is the career they really want or thought they wanted because of a love for animals,” Mask says. The program developed out of a need for paraprofessionals who could work alongside veterinarians and thus, those who complete the program become Certified Veterinary Assistants (CVA) under direction of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association. With over 100 lessons involving genetics, infectious diseases, terminology, handling, restraining and movement of animals, plus many more, students are learning the materials, usually in a classroom setting with an agricultural science teacher or 4-H agent/volunteer. While the participant is working to complete the 100 lessons with a passing grade the 500 apprenticeship hours can begin under the direction of the veterinarian with a list of 78 clinical skills that have to be learned and checked off. “STEM is a buzzword these days, but I like to refer to it as STEAM, by adding the “A” for agriculture. “STEM is a buzzword these days, but I like to refer to it as STEAM, by adding the “A” for agriculture. Agricultural literacy is a big part of what we do in this program. We know veterinarians do more than treat sick animals; they consult ranchers when it comes to breed selection and what is best for the environment,” Mask says.
we do in this program. We know veterinarians do more than treat sick animals; they consult ranchers when it comes to breed selection and what is best for the environment,” Mask says. The program takes into account that not all who want to pursue the veterinary field will work in a clinic. As a result, there are different tracks students can select. There is the clinical, one health (environment) and laboratory (research and diagnostics) tracks with the business (practice manager) track in the development phase. “College isn’t for everyone, but by completing this program it gives students the option to go on and have a successful career with their CVA or the foundation they need to pursue veterinarian school,” Mask said, “Students see material that will most likely be presented in college courses and have the required apprentice hours for their veterinary school applications and above all a true knowledge of this career path.” The program usually takes anywhere from two to five years to complete and requires five continuing educational units each year after to maintain the CVA status. With the doors wide open after high school graduation, completing these certification programs and similar ones can help guide students to a desired career path or field of study. With a competitive job market, it’s reassuring to know that programs are in place to help set the stage for the next industry professionals.

In far Western Kansas just outside of the small town of Wallace, there is a family who shows livestock together, plays sports together, judges livestock and work on the farm and ranch together. They are following in their parents’ footsteps, and have two older siblings/cousins who have set an example for them – Grace Hammer, a May 2017 graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in Agribusiness, and Callahan Grund, a senior at K-State, majoring in Animal Science. Both Grace and Callahan served in leadership position on the American Gelbvieh Junior Association board. Read more about the other young exhibitors who are siblings, cousins and friends...

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
Do I Need To Hire A Nutrition Consultant? I will never forget, years ago, when a student in my Introduction to Animal Nutrition Class stated, “He did not think he needed to know how to balance a livestock diet, that is what he would have his feed salesman do.”
That statement took me back a bit and as I thought about a response. I shared the following with the class. If a person has no/little knowledge of nutrition and no experience balancing a diet, how does one know if what the feed salesman tells you is correct or not? In fact, how do you know which feed salesperson to believe? All feed salespeople’s ultimate goal is to sell their feed product(s). That student barely passed Introduction to Nutrition and I don’t know if the student has been successful in life or not. Sometimes hiring a nutrition consultant can be advantageous for an operation and sometimes it may not be worth the endeavor. So, how do you know if you need a nutrition consultant? First let’s examine why an operation needs a nutritionist. - The owner/operator/manager may have a limited knowledge of animal nutrient requirements, the nutrient composition of various feedstuffs, the steps required to balance a diet, or the variety of feedstuffs available. - The owner/operator/manager may not have the time or skill set required to balance least, cost diet(s) for an operation. - It can be overwhelming trying to keep up with commodity prices and feedstuff availability. - Oftentimes, an operation is made aware of non-traditional feedstuffs at what appears to be bargain prices and knowing if these feedstuffs can be utilized and how they can be utilized without negatively affecting performance can be challenging. Before hiring a nutritionist an owner/operator/

manager should ask his/herself several questions. The answers to these questions will tell each person whether they need to seek the advice of a consulting nutritionist. 1. How do my fed costs compare to other producers? Do I care? 2. How does my cattle performance compare to industry standards? 3. Am I willing to change what I am currently doing? Will I take the advice of a nutritionist? 4. Do I want my cattle operation to be more profitable? 5. What should be my next step to lower feed costs? 6. If the producer does not own a TMR feed mixer; am I willing to purchase one? What opportunities/values should a consulting nutritionist offer? First a nutritionist must be knowledgeable and up-to-date. Second a good nutritionist thinks outside-the-box, but is practical. A nutritionist should be able to make recommendations specific to the needs and abilities of each operation. A diet that works for one operation may not work for another operation. Depending on a feeder’s ability, equipment, facilities, type of cattle and location, some diets are safer than others. This is especially true when it comes to incorporating non-traditional feedstuffs into diets and rations. When it comes to selecting a consulting nutritionist, first and foremost, pick someone you trust. Pick someone familiar with our geographic location. Ask for references. Ask other producers who they might recommend/not recommend. Ask yourself, can I afford the services of this nutritionist? Can I afford not to accept the services of this nutritionist? Will this nutritionist be available to me when I need a question(s) answered or is he/she too busy? The nutritionist you hire should be willing to visit your operation for a nominal cost before making recommendations and should be willing to make periodic visits on an agreed schedule or on an as-

Sometimes a particular producer may not really want a nutritionist; he/she may just want someone to tell them what they are currently doing is okay. If that is the case – save your money – invite your pastor to dinner and ask him. He will tell you that you are doing fine. On a separate issue, regarding a previous column titled VFD and the Small Producer, Kent Nutrition Group (Feeds) recently informed me they are floor stocking medicated feeds in their warehouses and are allowing local feed dealers to order small lots (as little as one bag) with an appropriate VFD Form. It is good companies, such as Kent Feeds, that are sensitive to the needs of both larger and smaller scale producers. Since the average size cow herd in many states is 25 to 30 cows, there are many herds that have fewer cows than the average size herd.

Lower Carcass Weights Support Cattle Prices By Wes Ishmael

arcass weights give and they take away. That may be the mostly likely explanation for the mid-April rally in cattle futures, as well as stronger cash cattle prices than many expected so far this spring.
“Aggressive marketings by feedlots and seasonal tendencies have continued to pull cattle carcass weights down,” say analysts with the Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC), in a recent Livestock Monitor. As of the week ending April 1, (USDA data) they point out that steer dressed weights were 22 lbs. less year over year. “Cattle continue to be pulled through the system fairly rapidly, which results in lower finished cattle weights relative to last year,” says Andrew P. Griffith, agricultural economist at the University of Tennessee, in his weekly market comments the

middle of April. “The price escalation (fed cattle) is far from surprising, but the ability of the market to remain strong for such a long period is worth noting…Although more animals are being harvested than one year ago, the reduced weights help moderate total beef production. “There is no reason to believe finished cattle prices will begin a rapid decline, but fed cattle prices will soften as marketready supplies increase the next several months. This will result in a seasonal price decline through the summer.” For perspective, according to analysts with USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS), the first-quarter, 5-area weighted steer price averaged $122.96/cwt. From the last week of March through the third week of April, weekly average fed steer prices ranged from $124.33 to $130.91 on a live basis; from

“Growing per capita consumption multiplied by an estimated 2017 population of 1.39 billion people (compared to a total U.S. population of 324 million) is pushing total beef consumption in China ahead of the European Union and second only to the U.S.,” says Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in his weekly market comments. “Economic growth is the principal driver of beef demand with an emerging middle class and rapid urbanization dramatically impacting beef demand in the country.” Looking ahead All of this is to day that cattle market fundamentals are lots stronger than at this time last year, even though cyclical price pressure will continue. In fact, there seems to be growing credence to the notion that most of the downside cyclical price correction is in the books. For one thing, cattle feeding economics continue to improve.
Even so, seasonality says calf prices will decline into the summer months.
“Based on seasonal trends, the strength in the calf market will soon be coming to an end as more focus will be put on feeder cattle instead of grass cat“Returns over upcoming months are projecttle,” Griffith explains. “Producers should take advantage of the price ed to moderate, remaining positive through strength in the market. The spring run up in prices has provided proJuly,” says Glynn Tonsor, KSU livestock econducers an opportunity to sell inventory at a strong price or to use omist. “Improvements throughout 2017 to a price risk management tool such as Livestock Risk Protection insurdate mainly reflect higher realized and exance, futures, or options to solidify a market price.”
pected fed cattle prices.”
Projected net returns for finishing steers in April’s Focus on Feedlots survey from Kansas State University (KSU) forecast positive returns through July, ranging from $23.03 per head in June to $143.46 in May. Projected net returns for steers in March was $265.31 “Returns over upcoming months are projected to moderate, remaining positive through July,” says Glynn Tonsor, KSU livestock economist. “Improvements throughout 2017 to date mainly reflect higher realized and expected fed cattle prices.” Calf prices also may receive a boost from anemic wheat prices and dry conditions in winter wheat regions. “The situation likely provides an option for producers to graze-out wheat pastures for backgrounding,” ERS analysts

explain, in the latest monthly Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook. “To the extent that demand for calves to graze out these areas increases, prices of lighterweight calves may find support. However, the timing of movement of these calves off pasture and into feedlots will likely impact both the level of placements and the price of heavier-weight calves in the coming months.”
calves and feeder cattle.
Depending on your particular leanings, Griffith explains the market still could be undervaluing
“One way of looking at the price strength today is that it was a correction from the severely underpriced animals in the fall of 2016. Alternatively, one could view the relatively strong prices of today as over-priced cattle,” Griffith says. “However, calves and feeder cattle appear to be appropriately priced based on deferred live cattle futures contracts. There could be some support for the argument that today’s feeder cattle are somewhat undervalued given the strong cash value of finished cattle relative to the live cattle contract. Thus, some may argue the deferred contracts are undervaluing finished cattle in future months meaning feeder cattle should be worth more today than the realized prices.”

“Haired Up is a product we truly believe in. Within 10 days we could see it working. Bulls normally have a courser feel to their hair especially big bulls. The texture, condition and softness it made in our National Champion Bull “Tradition of 24” hair was exactly what we were looking and hoping for. Go ahead and give Haired Up a try, it’s worth it” - AMIE STERTZBACH, STERTZBACH CATTLE CO. GRAND CHAMPION ANGUS BULL, 2017 NWSS
“Haired Up has become our top choice for a supplement to encourage hair growth in the summer months leading up to Jr Nationals and State Fair season!! The results speak for themselves...its tested and proven and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a solution in that category!!” - RAYMOND GONNET, COMPETITIVE EDGE GENETICS
SUPREME CHAMPION HEIFER, 2016 KS STATE FAIR JR. SHOW
“Haired up I feel is one of the best products on the line at CSS. I love how cattle grow a thick, healthy coat of hair and unlike most cattle hair promoters they get picky eating. With haired up they still eat and stay on feed. You won’t need coolers when you use haired up. Feed as its instructed and with proper daily hair work at home you will be as hairy if not hairier than anyone else at the show.” - TY BAYER, TC REDS GRAND CHAMPION ANGUS HEIFER, 2015 JR. SHOW NWSS

We have been searching for a new Maine-Anjou herd sire for several years. When I spotted BOE Epic in the yards in Denver I knew he was the one! He is basically a total outcross to our cow herd as well as an outcross to most of the popular pedigrees in the Maine breed today. However, his phenotype is what separates him from the rest of the field. Incredible structure, bold center rib, massive hipped, and an awesome look. He's not all fluff and stuff, in Denver at 10 months of age, scanned a 17.8 in REA and weighed 1,221 lbs. You don't find a 75% Maine-Anjou sire like this everyday! He was the top selling bull in the Denver Maine Bull Sale and he was a steal in our mind. We have had an overwhelming number of cattlemen placing semen orders. The semen cost is $100 per unit with a 10 unit minimum and we will fill semen orders on a first come, first serve basis.

The cow maker
1829 and Steel Force, that in itself is worth talking about. Two of the most epic lines of cattle at Griswold Cattle. 1829 has produced over $180,000 in progeny sales and produced Cerveza, and Unwound. Whizard produces back to the genetic quality he holds. His daughters have the eye appeal, big bellied, moderate made look that is demanded. They carry a genetic punch that is unparalleled and make awesome cows. We have been getting back reports of the consistency and quality he adds to club calf bred females. If you haven’t tried Whizard, put in a cane, you won’t regret it. Breed for QUALITY! Use on heifers with caution. Contact Tessa Schotte for all your Griswold Semen needs 785-268-0470.
