This is how this feed supplement works … the superior science of FRESH & FEMININE™ features a combination of strategic vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and a high concentration of by-pass protein sources. This chemistry boosts metabolic fat burning in the body that targets specific areas of the body to reduce fat content, most notably in the neck and brisket area. The animal has a more feminine, attractive physique and even moves better. This helps to offset the results seen from aggressive, high energy show cattle diets. All natural and fertility safe for open heifers, bred heifers, steers and bulls. Simply top dress 6 oz. per head per day of this pelleted supplement on your current ration until desired freshness has been achieved.

City, illiNois

33 Angus • 19 simmentAl • 3 Hereford • 4 mAine • 3 XBred • 3 CHi • 1 sHortHornPlus • 19 Bred Heifers • 5 Bulls For anyone that does not know us, we are a family that has been in the cattle business going back to 1835. We really concentrate and dedicate ourselves to raising high-quality, sound, productive steers, heifers and bulls. We take pride and really enjoy working with both young 4-Hers and cattle producers that share the same passion for the business as we do. Our herd consists of 180 cows, 60 bred heifers and 15 main donor cows. We focus on an intense embryo program directed at our RF donors and are aggressive in looking for high-quality donors for the future, to ensure our success in the cattle business for years to come. We are having our 33rd Club Calf Sale this year, and if you’ve never been to one, it truly is a blast from the past. This is an auction style format where we set a sale order and just sell cattle. Our sale will start at 6 pm and will be done by 7:30 pm. We do not beg for bids or bore you with any details about the animal’s pedigree. All the steers, heifers and bred heifers are available for viewing at our farm at any time, until we move all the animals to the sale facility on November 20th. Our family really appreciates your interest and would love to help you in any way possible. Please feel free to reach out to any of us.

Thank you, The Rutledges

Greetings: SDJPS Exhibitors The South Dakota Jr. Point Show was organized to recognize youth who participate in showing beef, sheep, swine and goats throughout the state of South Dakota. For the 2015-16 season, 144 exhibitors ranging in age from 821 and accumulated points at many sanctioned shows over the course of the year. SDJPS would like to thank all the show committees and volunteers who put on these shows for our youth. The year end awards were given out at during the 2016 SD State Fair on Sunday evening. It takes tremendous dedication and work ethic from these youth and the support of their families when it comes to showing livestock. The Overall High Point Market Beef Exhibitor went to Talli Heim of Wessington Springs, SD. Talli is the daughter of Chris and Megan Heim; she received a custom belt buckle. The Overall High Point Breeding Heifer Exhibitor this year was Sydney Johnsen. Sydney is the daughter of Chris and Ronalee Johnsen of Wessington, SD. Sydney also received a custom belt buckle to commemorate her year. This year the NLC Ranch, Rick and NaLani Dunsmore family, donated a new Sullivan’s chute to the highest point getting beef showmanship participant over all age divisions. Receiving this special award is Payton Beare of Ree Heights, SD. Payton, daughter of Allen and Brenda Beare, placed in the top five in twelve showmanship contests earning 302 points. Congrats to Payton and thank you to NLC Ranch for supporting the SD Jr. Point Show! The Overall High Point Meat Goat Exhibitor went to Hannah Peterson of Fedora, SD. Hannah is the daughter of Robert Peterson and Vicki Vining. She received a custom detailed hanging show box. The Overall High Point Market Swine Exhibitor went to John Eilertson. John is the son of Jerry and Jane Eilertson of Wentworth, SD. John received a custom detailed hanging show box. The Overall High Point Market Lamb Exhibitor went to Logan Tlam of Mt. Vernon, SD. Logan is the son of Dale and Amy Tlam and she also received a hanging show box. The 2016 SDJPS Scholarship winners were Justin Ringkob and John Eilertson. Justin is from Lake City, SD, and is enrolled at South Dakota State majoring in Animal Science; he is the son of Jennifer and Chuck Ringkob. John Eilertson is attending Casper College pursuing an Ag Business degree. Both these tremendous young men are receiving a $250 scholarship from the association. The 2016-2017 show season will kick off with the Springs Showdown on Oct. 29 and the Miller Calf Show on Oct. 31.

TALKING About Agriculture Last month we offered tips when talking to the media about agricultural topics. This month, we want to continue that conversation and provide talking points for those “hot topics” in the media today. By Lindsay Allen

There is no such thing as hormone-free food as hormones are the chemical messenger that makes life possible,” says Troy Hadrick, South Dakota founder of Advocates for Agriculture, along with his wife Stacy. Hadrick says when talking to

While the rules and regulations for hormone use vary for different species, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) monitors and tests all meat to ensure it is safe before it hits the grocery store shelves. While the conversation should always focus on what you know and are comfortable speaking to, it is also wise to do your own research and know the facts. Research has shown that a 3 oz. natural, nonimplanted beefsteak has 1.39 nano grams of estrogen and a 3 oz. hormone implanted beefsteak has 1.89 nano grams of estrogen. Compare this to 3 oz. of cabbage, which has 2,017 nano grams and a normal adult male who has 136,000 nano grams of estrogen. But how much is a nano gram? It is one-billionth of a gram. Here you can find more specific information, facts and talking points regarding the welfare of the livestock you raise and the standards producers are being asked to meet. Harvesting animals Because production agriculture results in food products, those who are involved – and especially those who show market animals – may find themselves helping people understand their food source. The focus on safe and humane actions involved in harvesting animals has been an area of concern for many, including the government and producers themselves. Hardwick points out that the fact remains that people raise animals to feed people. “Ruminants have an incredible ability to take grass and forage, digest it and turn it into a product that is a human consumable protein,” he says. “There is a small percentage of this earth that has farmable land that we can use to grow food, but what we can do is let these animals graze on that untillable land and let them turn that grass into beef.” The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 requires animals to be inspected before and after slaughter and ensures that slaughter is done under sanitary conditions. The act helped address questions the public had about the safety of their meat, but questions about the humane treatment were addressed in the 1958 Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA). Amongst many of the guidelines set forth in this act for packinghouses to follow was the requirement of all animals to be stunned prior to slaughter-thus making them unconscious and unable to feel pain. “As food producers, young people must realize that it is their respon-

sibility to produce safe, wholesome products. This is called ‘quality assurance.’ Quality assurance should be important to all youth livestock producers and they should realize that it is their responsibility to produce safe, wholesome products and that the animal husbandry decisions they make affect the quality of the food they produce,” Gunn notes.

Nutritional value of meat Due to many misconceptions too numerous to list, many people are forgoing meat as their primary protein source and looking for alternative options.

According to the 11th Annual Food and Health Survey, the Top 3 sources of information on proCarbon footprint tein are scientific studies, media headlines or article, and family or Often, animals get a bad rep for friends, which means we can have the “excess waste” they produce, but a powerful effect on our family and in reality, livestock are extremely ef- friends regarding their views about ficient at converting food and water meat. into a protein source for consumers. Hooked on Showing Cattle By Jacob Tapley, AJCA Area 7 Vice President

Showing cattle . . . for some just nothing more than just another hobby and yet for others, a passion, a way of life. Showing cattle has impacted me greatly. I know that from now on I’ll have something to do with it whether that's actually in the show ring promoting my cattle or breeding and selling them to others. To be very honest, I’m hooked on showing cattle. As far as my show ring experiences have gone, I've been extremely blessed with how well I’ve placed in the ring. However, this intricate “game” isn't all about the winning. Don’t get me wrong, that's a wonderful part of showing. I've got nothing against it! But by no means is showing cattle that shallow. It's about

the hard work, the responsibility, the people A+ you meet along the way, the life lessons you learn and the knowledge you gain about cattle and life. The more I learn, the more I realize the less I know. Feeding, clipping, fitting, hair care … it's as much an art and it is a science! Hard work is a big part of this experience. The more work you put into your livestock projects, the more you get of them. And that part of the equation doesn't matter if you bought a heifer or steer for big money or pulled it up out of the pasture. Early mornings, late nights, rain, sleet, snow, or sunshine - the more work that goes in not only does your project benefit but you as a person benefit as well. You build that work ethic.

Yes, just like everyone else, I pulled my fair share but there's always someone behind you whether it be a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, advisor or a friend.

The people that supported you – whether that's financially or just emotionally – the person or people who taught you, advisers, extension agents, breeders, your fitters if you had any, even all the way down to the guy that sales you feed at the feed store. There's someone behind you, someone who has backed you to get you to the show and to that backdrop. Be sure to say thank you to those people. I believe one of the most important things showing cattle teaches is how to say thank you. You should think about all the people it took to get you where you are and the personal sacrifices they made to support you. For me personally the most humbling part of this whole thing is after the work, the long hours, the show, the

STATE FAIR Show Stopper By Haley Herzog

B

ig Tex isn’t the only crowd favorite at the 2016 State Fair of Texas. On Tuesday, Oct 4, 2016, a new man on the fairgrounds stole the show. Jaren McTee, from Farmersville, TX competed in the Youth Market Barrow Show and took home not only an eighth place ribbon, but the spotlight as well. Ten-year-old McTee has a medical condition known as cerebral palsy. Although this condition restricts him in some ways, he doesn’t let it affect his ability to do all the things he loves. The wheel chair that he uses allows him to communicate with his friends and family by providing words and thoughts onto the screen. “Jaren’s screen on his wheel chair lets him talk to us.” Jaren’s mother, Jenger, said. “When he looks at a person or words on the screen it lets us know what he is trying to say. On the way to the stock show as we were in the car he was telling us that he was really excited about ‘the big wheel’ or in other words the ferris wheel.” Due to his condition he needs some assistance when it

comes to entering the show ring and driving his hog around. Family friend, Jaci Horton, was all smiles helping McTee get around the show ring to exhibit Toca, his hog. His sister also helped out by assisting in driving the hog around the ring. “Our families are friends and so I was more than willing to help out and be a part of Jaren’s experience. It was really fun and he did great,” Horton said. As McTee entered the show ring his family and friends watched closely around the ring with feelings of excitement and nerves both over coming them. The judge quickly took a glance at Toca as he entered the sorting pen and without hesitation pulled the hog to stay and continue competing. Huge smiles came across the faces of all three exhibitors involved, along with applause from all watching alongside the ring and in the stands. When the pre-selection of the class was finished the judge had each of his top barrows re-enter the ring for final evaluation. As the gate opened and McTee and his team entered the ring driving Toca at full force, the judge evaluated him

“We are so proud of Jaren’s success today! He plays baseball, rides horses, and he loves going to church camp, but showing his hogs is his most favorite thing,” Jenger said. “He enjoys putting in the work every day and going out to work with his animals. The State Fair has been great this year and the thing we love most about showing “There were a lot of great hogs in this class from top is getting to do it with friends and family. It’s a family to bottom but this barrow coming in eighth place was pretty affair.” intensely. As he narrowed down the class to the top 10 exhibitors he took one last glance at Toca before giving the eighth place chip to McTee. The arena filled with applause and looks of genuine happiness as the stands and individuals ringside watched McTee grinning from ear to ear, thrilled with his success.

special,” the judge said. “I love this hog’s width and dimension down his loin and he’s probably one of the best put together hogs in this class. He gets a little off at times in his movement and a little plainer made, but overall a very complete barrow and the young man does an exceptional job exhibiting this hog and I congratulate him on his project.” Although McTee didn’t end up snagging a market show sale spot or taking home the blue ribbon it didn’t matter. He and Toca were the crowd favorite by a landslide and stole the show. After letting go of his hog, he and his family along with friends gathered to share the excitement. The smile on McTee’s face could’ve been seen all the way from “the big wheel” if anyone were looking.

The McTees had a fantastic 2016 State Fair of Texas experience. They plan to attend more major stock shows as the year continues but there’s one big goal the family hopes to achieve in years to come while exhibiting livestock. “Jaren’s main goal is he would love to eventually be able to drive himself in his wheel chair and be able to drive his hog on his own,” Jenger said. Banners and ribbons eventually fade colors, trophies continuously tarnish, but memories made at the State Fair of Texas last a lifetime.

PROFESSOR TO PRODUCER

By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting

GETTING CATTLE ON FEED THE EASY WAY

A

ctually, this title may be an oxymoron. Getting cattle on feed successfully is not always an easy process. Getting cattle on feed is both an art and a science. It is an art based on scientific principles. I am not really sure which came first, the art or the science.

Over the years, I have known some excellent cattle feeders who knew little about scientific principle, but a great deal about feeding cattle. In many cases, the art came first followed by some researcher wanting to know why. The latter is why in the last 20 years the way we finish cattle has changed. However, the art really has not changed. Remember the articles I have written about the Four Golden Rules for Feeding Livestock. The principles contained in the Four Golden Rules have not changed and I have been feeding cattle for over 60 years. In case someone does not remember, these rules they are: Feed the same time. Feed the same feed. Feed the same amount. Feed the same way (procedure). The Four Golden Rules are not the subject of this column. In this article, I will highlight some of the recommendations I provide to feedlot operators. Recommendation No. 1 Feed newly arrived calves long-stem grass hay the first 48 hours. No legumes, just grass hay. Long-stem grass hay is acceptable and cattle know what it is. Second, long-stem grass hay helps maintain a neutral pH rumen and it stimulates saliva production, which helps maintain a neutral rumen pH and helps start rumination. Recommendation No. 2 Avoid shelled corn in any form for 40 to 60 days. Shelled corn contains starch and starch is the root of all evil for lactic acidosis. I encourage feeders to feed a 50:50 mixture of pelleted corn gluten feed (CGF) and pelleted soybean hulls (SBH) along with 50% haylage or chopped hay of some sort. I prefer ryelage, a chopped dry hay/grass hay will work, but no legumes – too much protein. Start the ryelage at 1% of body weight on a dry matter (DM) basis and

the 50:50 mixture of CGF/SBH at 1% of body weight, DM basis. I recommend these percentages for all cattle, even for preconditioned calves and yearlings. This diet and ration combination is fault-free. It is hard to screw up and throw cattle off feed even if a mixing error occurs. Why? There is no/little starch in the diet. Even corn silage can contain too much starch (especially this year) for use in starter diets. Some science: shelled corn contains 61.0% starch, 3.8% oil, 8.0% protein and 11.2% fiber at 15% moisture – the way it is purchased at the elevator in the fall. CGF typically is 21% protein, 8.4% fiber and 3.5% fat. SBH are 9% to 11% protein, 2.1% fat and 40.0% fiber. The fiber in the SBH is highly digestible, upwards to 90% digestible. From a science perspective, this diet is around 12% to 14% protein, contains low fat content and is highly digestible. The primary rumen bacteria on this diet are cellulose digesters. Starch fermenters are not required because there is little/no starch in the diet. During the receiving period, I prefer a diet with CGF and SBH compared to a diet containing distillers grains (DGS) in some form. DGS contains more protein and fat than young or starter cattle can handle successfully. DGS is great feed for finishing cattle but not as good as CGF/SBH for starting cattle. DGS contains 29% protein, 7% to 12% fat and 9% fiber. There is little/no starch in DGS but the protein and fat are too high compared to CGF/SBH for use in starter diets. Recommendation No. 3 Increase the CGF/SBH portion of the diet one (1) pound every third day while holding the amount of ryelage constant as long as the cattle are cleaning up the bunk between feedings. For feedlot cattle, once they are on feed I like to see a 5% to 10% carry over in the bunk between feedings; 10% is maximum – never a slick, cleaned up bunk. Increasing the CGF/SBH amount one pound every third day will eventually result in a ration that is 85% CGF/SBH and 15% ryelage. After 30 to 60 days, the CGF/SBH can be replaced with a DGS/shelled corn mixture. Recommendation No. 4 Revaccinate all incoming cattle with a modified live vaccine for IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, Haemophilus and Lepto, and

PROFESSOR TO PRODUCER (continued) a Clostridium C & D vaccine. Vaccinate all cattle upon arrival (within 2 days) even preconditioned calves and cattle with 2 previous vaccinations. Two points – I trust no one regarding what they say about vaccinations. And, revaccination helps increase immunity and interferon production during stress. Revaccination is inexpensive and good policy. One dead calf pays for a lot of revaccination. Recommendation No. 5 Feed a premix that contains an ionophore, appropriate mineral for the diet, and ammonium chloride and thiamin if the diet is high in DGS. For the first four days, the premix should contain an antibiotic (tetracycline) at a therapeutic level (2 grams:head:day). The premix should not contain antibiotic for the next 10 days, but antibiotic should be added to the premix at the therapeutic level for four days beginning on Day 15. In other words, 4 days on, 10 days off, 4

days on for an antibiotic at a therapeutic level. I like this method of antibiotic use compared to feeding a sub-therapeutic level of antibiotic for a prolonged period of time, for several reasons. Recommendation No. 6 Watch and observe the cattle. Followed by more observation. Catch sick calves before they are sick. Recommendation No. 7 Use of a mixer wagon of some brand with scales. One cannot feed more than 20 to 30 calves without one. Portable mixers are a must. By Dr. Gary Warner, Elgin Veterinary Hospital

Managing Diarrhea in Show Cattle For many involved in the junior show cattle business fall brings an end to the old show season and the start of a new one. County and state fairs are wrapped up and the sale offering of spring born calves are all but over as well. So with this article we thought we should address the most prevalent problem we see in fledging show animals….diarrhea. Most often, the call comes in from a frantic owner or parent that relates their new calf is “painting the fence” with a very watery, awful smelling, profuse projectile diarrhea. Although it appears serious and life threatening, a few simple questions and answers usually can define the problem and lead to a reasonable treatment plan. First we want to know about the calf’s appetite, is he or she eating and drinking water? Does the calf have a clean or dirty nose? Have you taken the temperature? If so, what is it? Is the calf drawn? In other words, does the belly appear empty? Do the eyes look sunken into the orbit? What does the diarrhea look like? Is it pure water or loose? How does it smell? Do you see fresh blood or blood clots present? All of these questions should be asked as we determine the seriousness of the problem. Most often times, feed mismanagement is the cause of the diarrhea. Too many carbohydrates at one time to suit the rumen bugs; so they say your tummy is upset and back off the feed to let us heal. The calf will oblige by not eating much of their ration for a couple of days,

much preferring to eat hay or grass. There is a reason for this, as forage helps to buffer the ph of the rumen, helping it to achieve its more normal acidity and balance of rumen bugs. Most often times, cattle with diarrhea from over consumption of grain products need no treatment at all, except for a little time. Another common cause of diarrhea is young show prospects is coccidiosis. Coccidia are a normal inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract and are usually kept under control by the influence of other bacterial species present in the lower gut. But when something upsets the balance of bugs present, many times of which stress plays a big part, the coccidia over grow, damaging the lining of the lower gut and causing the profuse hemorrhagic watery diarrhea observed. Most often times, cattle will respond to treatment with an oral coccidiostat administered in drinking water or by oral drench. Some veterinarians also recommend parenteral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to be administered along with the coccidiostat. Usually within a couple to three days after initiation of treatment, the blood will have disappeared and stool character will have returned to normal. Other causes of diarrhea will be discussed in future articles. We hope this has been informative. Learning on the Fly “Fake it until you make it” is one of Bailee Wright’s key phrases. If someone were to ask her what she wanted to do with the rest of her life a year ago, she never would have imagined landing a job as a county extension agent. Life has a weird way of working things out, but Wright considers her job as a true blessing. Growing up in Lubbock, Texas, Wright exhibited pigs and heifers. While being actively involved in leadership activities, her passion for the agricultural industry grew over the years and Wright made it a point to promote the 4-H and FFA organizations to the best of her ability. When Wright exhibited at Texas major stock shows, she enjoyed traveling, meeting new people, and learning key skills from her advisors. In May of 2016, she graduated from West Texas A&M University with a degree in agricultural communications. While at school, she was involved in leadership activities and was a member of the livestock judging team. For some, 22 years of age is young to be a county agent, but she doesn’t let it interfere with her passion for kids and agriculture. In January, I had a professor approach me and asked what I wanted to do with the rest of my life,” Wright said. “I really had no idea at the time, but I knew I wanted to work with kids, travel, and go to livestock shows, which describes what a county agent does.” A county extension agent wasn’t on Wright’s list of career options, but the week of graduation, she accepted the position in Dallam-Hartley County. “One day while job searching, I came across the opening for Dallam-Hartley county extension agent, and decided to apply,” Wright said. “It was one of those incidents where I wanted to see what happened. After the Houston Livestock Show, I interviewed and the week of graduation, I accepted the position.” Wright moved to Dalhart, which, naturally felt like home. At first, she was worried about having nothing to do in a small town, she learned

that her job constantly keeps her busy and never bored. Wright’s first stock show to attend as a county agent was the State Fair of Texas. Dallam-Hartley County had a combined total of 44 livestock exhibitors and two Swine Skill-a-Thon competitors at the fair. “State Fair [of Texas] has been an incredible experience for me,” Wright said. “When I was still showing, I enjoyed coming to the State Fair, I appreciate how the State Fair wants the show to be all about the kids as well. It’s enjoyable and nerve wracking to sit on the sidelines and watch my 4-H members.” Organization is key for Wright when it comes to show day, as she wants to watch all of her kids show. “One of the hardest parts about my job is making sure I get to support all of my 4- H members,” Wright said, “I even have a color coordinated schedule that’s in my purse telling me what class each exhibitor is in and when they possibly will show.” Learning from 4-H families is an enjoyable part of Wright’s job. Every day brings new adventures and tasks. “My knowledge of goats and sheep aren’t as strong as they are when it comes to cattle and pigs,” Wright said. “I like when my 4-H families are able to teach me a few things.” Despite all the duties Wright has to manage, she loves her job and every aspect she gets to cover. She wants her kids to be happy while learning important skills that are going to take them far in life. She says the reason she stays sane is be-

cause she has learned to just go with the flow. “Being sleep deprived, running in ten different directions, and traveling has always been my way of life,’ Wright said. “I want to teach my 4-Hers how important it is to depend on yourself whether it be turning in weight cards or washing a pig; I want them to learn responsibility, what hard work is, and self-discipline.” When it comes to the future, Wright has a variety of goals she wants to accomplish. “I’m set on staying where I am for the next few years,” Wright said. “I know I’m not perfect and every day I am learning how to become a better agent. I’ve set goals, but I know my goals aren’t going to be achieved in a year. I’ll have to learn how specifically accomplish tasks, but I’m ready for the challenge.” For now, Wright is all about her 4-H members and enjoys each day she is given with them.
