Fresh & Feminine

This exciting new product has been proven with results and the demand for repeat orders has been tremendous. In fact, many of the major steer and heifer show winners from the past month feed Fresh & Feminine™, the secret to eye appealing show cattle! Feminine shape and freshness throughout the front end of your show animal spells ultimate success or failure in the show ring today. This is how this feed supplement works … the superior science of Fresh & Feminine™

features a combination of strategic vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and a high concentration of by-pass protein sources. This chemistry boosts metabolic fat burning in the body that targets specific areas of the body to reduce fat content, most notably in the neck and brisket area. The animal has a more feminine, attractive physique and even moves better. This helps to offset the results seen from aggressive, high energy show cattle diets. All natural and fertility safe for open heifers, bred heifers, steers and bulls. Simply top dress 6 oz. per head per day of this pelleted supplement on your current ration until desired freshness has been achieved.

Congratulations to the Lillesand Family

Congratulations to the Smith Family Congratulations to the Skiles Family

Upon doing so I saw a dramatic increase in consumption (25-30%), along with increased rib shape and overall body depth. I look forward to using this product when receiving calves in the fall. F

PROFESSORTOPRODUCER or producers trying to harvest forage, it has been a trying summer. Too much rain, too many cloudy days, fields with soil too soft for equipment. Yes, we have put up some goodquality hay, but we have harvested far too much poor-quality hay. Of course, even low-quality hay is better than snow banks in the winter and we can always supplement low-quality forages with corn, distillers grains, soy hulls, CDS, Mix 30, etc. I am sure Extension educators will be writing articles about supplementing poor-quality forages this coming winter. Not only has excessive rain reduced the quality of harvested hay, it also has reduced the growth of corn plants and decreased potential corn grain yields. Farmers expect some cornfields to yield so little corn grain, they are considering harvesting the stunted corn plants as corn silage. This raises several questions about how to manage water-damaged forage as a harvested forage crop, and there is some difference between corn stands flooded with creek water and cornfields with wet areas that collect surface runoff. Lowland fields that have been flooded may contain considerable debris and plants can have a lot of soil on them. These conditions may be harmful to harvesting equipment and at the very least, will result in dirty, dusty conditions during harvest. Nutritionally, the dirt buildup on the corn plant can result in high ash contents, so a forage analysis after harvest and before feeding is warranted. Operators should expect higher equipment maintenance cost from wear on shear bars,

chopper knives and bearings. Silage made from flood damaged corn or alfalfa fields can range from acceptable to black and rotten. Decreased milk production and/or reduced gain performance is likely when feeding flood-damaged crops. High nitrate concentrations in high water-damaged corn plants should not be a problem as yellow or light green corn plants have not taken sufficient nitrogen from the soil for growth. However, a forage analysis following harvest that includes a test for nitrate concentrations will provide peace of mind. Roots in soil flooded for two to three weeks may die due to no or too little oxygen for respiration. On a dry matter basis, more than 0.9% nitrate may be considered as potentially toxic. Levels of 0.0% – 0.4% are considered safe to feed under all conditions. The ensiling process generally reduces the nitrate concentration to non-toxic levels, reducing the chance for nitrate poisoning, even if nitrate concentration is excessively high. A bigger concern for waterdamaged corn intended for silage is fungal and bacterial contamination. Check the forage for molds. Mold and mycotoxin levels can be determined by most analytical laboratories. Mycotoxins in corn are produced by certain molds that infect the ear of corn. Molds may be present without the production of mycotoxins, but mycotoxins cannot be produced in the absence of molds. The mycotoxins of greatest interest are aflatoxin, deoxynivalenol (also known as vomitoxin or DON), fumonisin, zearalcnone and occasionally ochratoxin and T-2 toxin. A number of ear rots are capable of producing mycotoxin-producing molds. These include Fusarium Ear Rot, Gibberella Ear Rot and

MAKING USE OF WATER-STUNTED FORAGE

Aspergillums Ear Rot. Aflatoxins are a family of toxins that are particularly worrisome because they are potential carcinogens and thus represent food safety, and livestock health and production issues. The most common Aflatoxins, are B1, B2, G1, and G2. Aflatoxins may cause reduced weight gain and impaired immune system, liver damage and death. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) has established maximum acceptable levels of aflatoxins in grain and feed (20ppb) and in milk (0.5 ppb). Breeding livestock diets should contain no more than 100 ppb and growing diets no more than 200 ppb. Aflatoxins are produced by the fungi Aspergillums flavus and Aspergillums parasiticus, which came Aspergillums Ear Rot in corn. Cornfields should be monitored for molds. The risk of molds is a function of the exposure to water and the stage of the plant growth. Corn that was under water will have increased risk of molds and bacterial rotting. This contamination may be more pronounced in corn that

was already drying down (< 40% grain moisture) and took on water during a standing water period. Monitor plants for bacterial stalk rots. Fields that remain flooded for more than 12 hours are at most risk for stalk rots. Corn plants and grain that have been damaged by standing water and/or flooding can be utilized as silage but some precautionary measures should be utilized. The weather this fall also, will affect how we utilize water-damaged corn. Editors Note: If you have questions about this topic, please feel free to contact Dr. Walker at 309-963-4913, pwalker@ilstu.edu or 578 Old Peoria Rd, Danvers, IL 61732

Advice Can Add Value On Many Levels By Wealth Management Solutions, Inc. Courtesy of Matthew E. O’Donnell Vice President Morgan Stanley Professional financial advice adds value to client relationships and may help individuals achieve their goals. This article explores different reasons why readers may wish to turn to an experienced professional when making investment decisions. In today’s Internet-enabled, do-it-yourself world, many investors are opting to go it alone. They pick their own stocks, bonds and funds; choose their own strategies; and make their own buyand-sell decisions. While this self-directed approach may work for some, it may not be the wisest course for many. Investment Complexity May Require Professional Advice Investors today can choose from more than 5,000 publicly traded stocks, in excess of 7,000 mutual funds, 1,200-plus exchange traded funds and several thousand bond issues – and that’s just those listed in the United States.1 Then, there are the alternative asset classes that includes commodities, real estate, hedge funds and private equity. The breadth of the public securities markets and the complexity of alternative investments require a high level of experience, and this is the value provided by a professional Financial Advisor. In addition, qualified Financial Advisors may have access to sophisticated strategies, institutional quality research and risk management tools that are generally unavailable to untrained individuals. Discipline and Objectivity – The Hallmarks of Successful Investing There are a number of classic mistakes that retail investors inevitably fall prey to: overreacting to market news, selling an investment too soon or holding it too long, trying to time the market, or under- or overestimating risk. A qualified investment professional is trained to identify the conditions that lead to these reactions, and may help you avoid these missteps. Objective, third-party advice can also help you maintain a disciplined investment strategy because it requires that you set achievable goals, implement trading guidelines and establish rules for buying and selling securities. Investment publications, blogs and television and radio shows are filled with stories about investors overpaying in a bull market and panic selling during a market correction. A Financial Advisor is more likely to view such situations dispassionately and offer a more balanced and long-term perspective.

The added value of Professional advice is its holistic approach to investing, taking into account life events, shifting goals, changing economic and market environments, tax events, insurance issues and legacy planning needs. So, if you are currently managing your own investment portfolio, you may want to consider tapping into a Financial Advisor’s experience. It may make a big difference in achieving your long-term goals. With a beautiful trailer like this one from Murphy Trailer you want to make sure your investment is protected and your cattle are safe.

Many SC readers will be hitting the roads this time of year to buy and bring home next year’s great show steers or heifers. Before you hook up the trailer, take a look at these important tips on routine maintenance that – in the worst-case scenario – could mean the difference between life and death for those future champions riding in back.

By Lindsay Allen

Hitting the road with a trailer full of cattle is not a task that should be taken lightly. When you look at the cost of a truck and trailer unit, not to mention the cattle on board, it is obvious that proper handling and maintenance should be exhibited. Unfortunately, stock trailer maintenance seems to be more of a reaction than a preventative measure. Dr. Clyde Lane, Jr., professor emeritus, Department of Animal Science, University of Tennessee, explains because the stock trailer is such an essential piece of equipment on most livestock operations, understanding the principles of proper cattle transportation is important for cattlemen.

He went on to say that the main focus of hauling with a truck and trailer, especially when it is full of cattle, is safety. “We want to do everything we can to make it safe on the road and to ensure that others can see the stock trailer. You would be surprised how many noncompliant trailers are on the roads,” Lane says. A reflective tape (Dot C2 reflective tape, which is alternating red and white with a height of 2 inches) needs to run at least one-half the length of the trailer between 15 inches and 60 inches off the ground; and in the rear, the tape must run the full width

140 September/October 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

of the trailer. He notes an inverted L using solid white tape, measuring 12 inches long on each leg, must mark the top corners of the trailer and reflective tape on the rear door at the bottom makes the trailer more visible to other motorists. It is suggested that cattlemen visit their Department of Transportation website for a list of compliant measures one must follow when pulling a trailer. Apart from the compliancy issues (which many cattlemen don’t meet), maintenance and inspection on the trailer should not be forgotten. Lane says when hauling cattle, you

Trailer have to think about the perception other motorists have. “If someone sees you hauling cattle on the road and everything seems fine, then the consumer feels more confident about the product. The perception we want to avoid and prevent is the opposite. If you are broke down on the side of the road with a trailer load of cattle, then people passing by start to question how long you have been sitting on the side of the road and so forth and might start asking questions.” In order to avoid a trailer breakdown, there are many quick inspections and steps producers can take to keep their trailer in good working condition. He suggests that before you even go to the trailer and start loading, you should first visit with your insurance agent. Your policy might cover your cattle trailer in the event of an accident, but if hauling someone else’s cattle, then only the truck may be covered and so forth. It is also good to know exactly how the insurance company views your truck and trailer unit (as one unit or separate). Looking in the owner’s manual for the gross vehicle weight (GVW), which is the total weight of the truck plus all the contents of the truck, should be done at the very beginning.

“You may end up needing to select a different vehicle to pull your trailer after reading the GVW,” Lane says.

ensuring that a spare tire is available and easily accessible with a sufficient jack to lift the truck or trailer in the event of a flat.

In addition to the GVW, Lane suggests checking both the truck and trailers gross axle weight rating (GAWR) and make adjustments as necessary if the weight is exceeded. The gross combined vehicle rating (GCVR) is the combined weight of the truck and trailer, plus their contents and is another area where a producer does not want to be found exceeding the allotted weight.

Lane notes wrenches that will fit the lug bolts need to be in the toolbox, as well as a handle extension to fit the lug wrench or socket wrench and flares or reflectors should also be in the truck so they can be used in the event of a breakdown. It’s not a bad idea to clean out the floor board of the truck so nothing can roll under the driver’s feet and to clean the windshield and fill the truck up with gas so it is ready to be used. Again, this is all about preventing the worstcase scenario and avoiding extra stress on your cattle during transportation.

“Keep in mind that if there is an accident and the GVW, GAWR or GCVR are over the specified limit, it may be difficult or almost impossible to win a lawsuit even if the driver is not at fault,” Lane said. When you start to inspect your trailer to ensure it is in proper condition to haul livestock, Lane says begin by making sure all bolts that attach the trailer hitch are tight and

When looking at the trailer, Lane says to check that the hitch is attached properly and the safety chains are functioning properly as well. Is your spare tire in good condition? Or is it too old to be used? One issue that most producers face,

according to Lane, is tires that are out of working condition. “Cattlemen may have a six- or seven-year-old trailer and only use it three or four times a year. The tires may look fine and have never had a flat, but could still be too old to use,” said Lane. He continues, “Look at the DOT number on the sidewall of the tire. The last four digits of the number

have not broken are all visual inspections a producer should take before loading cattle said Lane. Another area Lane suggests looking is the sides of the trailer. “Be sure that there are no broken or weakened slats on the sides of the trailer. Animals put a lot of pressure on the trailer walls when loaded on the trailer. An animal’s foot or head sticking out of the side of the trailer

“Cattlemen may have a six- or seven-year-old trailer and only use it three or four times a year. The tires may look fine and have never had a flat, but could still be too old to use,” said Lane. indicate the week and year that the tire was manufactured. It is recommended that tires over seven years of age be replaced regardless of the tire appearance. Many times the older tires may not show signs of structural breakdown.” The air pressures of tires should be looked at next and inflated to the recommended pressure found printed on the sidewall. To measure tread depth, Lane said to put a penny down inside the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down and as you look across the flat surface of the tread, determine if all of Lincoln’s head is showing. If the entire head is showing the tread is worn down too much to be safely used he said. Because a flat doesn’t happen that often, Lane said it is best to loosen each lug nut and retighten it (and make sure all lug nuts are present) every now and then as there is nothing worse than actually being broke down and finding out that your lug nuts are too tight and rust has made them difficult to remove. Looking for rust on the trailer as a whole is important and ensuring wheel bearings are in good condition, making sure the axle has no cracks or breaks and verifying the welded joints of the trailer frame

makes for a dangerous situation.” Other areas that should be given attention before loading include ensuring that the rear door and hinges are securely fastened and applying lubricant to the hinges if needed, and being sure the latch is properly working. “It is a good idea to have a short piece of chain that can be securely fastened around the end of the door and the back post of the trailer side to ensure the door does not accidently open,” he said. Checking the lights on the trailer is a vital step in the trailer inspection process, too. Going inside the trailer and inspecting the floor and divider gates is well worth the time of a producer. Ensuring there are no holes in the floors or weakened areas can save a lot of heartache further down the road. “If there is a hole in the floor of a trailer, a cow won’t stick her leg in the hole and may not bring it right back up. It may stay caught and that will cause some serious issues.” Lane noted. Cleaning the floors out of the trailer periodically is important, not only for health and sanitation reasons, but also safety. You want animals to have some bedding there

142 September/October 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

for comfort and footing, but cleaning it out allows you to inspect the bottom of the floors and the more bedding, the more weight you are adding to your load Lane points out. Once you have deemed your trailer fit to haul cattle, Lane suggests the following to help keep stress low in the cattle. “Inspect the animals you are hauling and make sure they are fit to travel. You also want to make sure that like-sized animals are in the same compartments – a calf in the same compartment as a cow could lead to injuries, and I recommend putting the heavier animals towards the front of the trailer.” Lane says. He suggests waiting till the last minute to bring cattle up to the loading area to avoid stress and added heat of cattle being confined in close areas. Also, consider the time of day in which you are hauling cattle. In the summer months, Lane suggests traveling in the mornings or evenings when it is cooler and during the winter, traveling in the mid-day when it is warmer, to make it easier on the cattle. Avoiding rough routes or heavy traffic areas are other topics that should be considered when hauling cattle as well. Stock trailer safety and inspection may add a few minutes to your “loading routine” but may save you hours down the road. Again, Lane says it is all about making your trailer visible, and creating safety measures for the cattle. Lane points out: “A lot of time, effort and money are used in producing cattle. Safeguard this investment by taking time to inspect the truck and trailers so breakdowns and accidents are kept to a minimum.”

Members and families enjoyed the ACA Trade Show, which is the largest farm show in the state. Several participated in and won the trade show farm obstacle course known as “Cowboy Capers.” Waddie Mitchell of Nevada, well known cowboy poet and story teller, provided entertainment for convention & AJCA guests prior to the AJCA awards session. Also prior to the awards, members and guests enjoyed a reception coordinated and sponsored by Wildy Family Farms of Manila. AJCA presented $12,000 in college scholarships and over $10,000 in year-end awards, which included 75 belt buckles to association members. AJCA members competed in public speaking and photography contests. All of these scholarships and awards were made possible by the many and generous AJCA sponsors.

FROM A

Managing Neonatal Calves By Dr. Gary Warner and Dr. Kelly Warner Elgin Veterinary Hospital

In the last Issue, our focus was on parturition; in particular dystocia and the methodology of making decisions on how best to deal with it. With that in mind, we thought it timely to discuss neonatal calf management; in particular, colostral delivery to the calf and what you might do to augment absorption and utilization by the calf.

VET

Colostral Quality First of all, cows are not created equal and neither is the quality of their colostrum! Some may argue this fact but there can be marked differences in the quality of colostrum based on breed, vaccination history, nutritional management, maturity and environmental stressors. Of course, most folks in the business know to treat most first-calf heifers as suspect when it comes to colostrum quality as many have just not lived long enough to develop the innate immunity required to produce immunoglobulins of sufficient quantities to provide superior protection to their offspring. Immunoglobulins are the proteins within the blood responsible for initiating defense mechanisms to protect the body from invasion of a plethora of disease and infectious processes. There are multiple types of immunoglobulins present in the blood, but the one we are most concerned with is IgG; as it is most important in providing protection to the calf and is the most readily absorbed in the intestinal tract.

212 September/October 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

Within the blood of the dam, there are two different IgG molecules – IgG 1 and IgG 2. The IgG 1 is what is concentrated in the colostrum produced by the dam and is the type most easily utilized by the calf. After absorption by the intestine, this molecule enters the bloodstream and some of it is re-secreted into the intestine and the lung to provide localized protective immunity to introduced pathogens. Good quality colostrum is known to contain at least 50 grams per liter of IgG. Colostral quality may be tested either by laboratory analysis, the use of a colostrometer or by the use of a refractometer. But good colostrum is not just about the quantity of IgG available, it is also about energy substrates, antimicrobiallike compounds (lysozymes, lactoferrin, etc.), fat soluble vitamins and certain growth factors to stimulate intestinal function and proper metabolism. Of special significance is the consideration of colostral fat content, which is vital in helping control internal temperature of the calf during inclement conditions and acts as a stimulus for other metabolic functions. This component is

Optimum absorption really only occurs in the first six hours, with absorptive capability dropping at least 50% after the initial six hours. an important link in the overall vitality of the calf in the first few days of life. Colostrum from cows that have been nutritionally stressed, or colostral replacement products not of colostral origin (blood resourced products) should be closely scrutinized when evaluating the energy content and availability of those supplements. The old adage you get what you pay for has never been more apparent than when you try to source a good colostrum replacement product.

in the first milk they take on to provide them with initial immune system support. The ability to absorb antibodies and other products declines to zero within the first 24 hours of life.

ments, but 150-200 grams IgG is considered to be an optimal consumption level to adequately prepare for challenges to immune function.

Optimum absorption really only occurs in the first six hours, with absorptive capability dropping at least 50% after the initial six hours. The ability to absorb the needed immunoglobulins steadily declines after six hours to the point at 24 hours, the calf is completely unable to absorb any of the beneficial components of the colostrum.

Once again, it is important to remember that the colostrum provides so much more than innate immune factors, that metabolic functions, activity and responsiveness to surroundings are all determined by the quantity and quality of the colostral product received. Ensuring consumption of a quality product is just like insuring the calf for a healthy and productive life.

Supplementing the Calf with Colostrum Soon after birth, the small intestine of the calf has the ability to absorb and transfer the antibodies known as Immunoglobulins (previously mentioned as IgG) into the bloodstream. These are very large molecules that normally are not allowed to cross the mucosal barrier, except only for a short time after birth.

It is preferred that a calf suckle to obtain it’s colostral intake, however for those that are weak, endured dystocia or are challenged due to environmental reasons (hypo or hyperthermic) it is perfectly ok to administer a colostral dose via feeding tube. It is recognized by most experts that a calf should receive up to a gallon of colostrum within the first 12 hours of life.

As opposed to other species, calves are not born with any immunity “on board; they have to rely on immune complexes transferred

It is accepted that a minimum dose of 100 grams of IgG be received by the calf in order to meet minimal immune function require-

BATTLE of the CATTLE

Raisingthe Barfor ProspectShows- Rewarding Excellenceinour Youth BOC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS The Outstanding Youth Scholarship was awarded to 16-yea-old Zach Rodriguez of Pflugerville, Texas. At an early age, Zach was diagnosed with Leukemia, which he battled for four years. When he was 8, he began showing cattle, for which he immediately had a huge passion. Zach was then diagnosed with cancer at 8, which he battled for over two years. Today, Zach is healthy, cancerfree and one of the nicest kids you could meet! He is still passionate about showing cattle. Zach courageously offered this piece of advice to us: “Whatever you’re facing, keep fighting...keep going....you can get through it!” You are truly a HERO to us, Zach! Congrats! A BOC Ambassador Scholarship was awarded to Kirsten, Cody and Cade Miller, a trio of siblings who have touched all our hearts this show season. While physical disabilities impact this family, these siblings rally together to accomplish great things. They are truly the epitome of TEAMWORK. Physical complications haven’t limited their determined attitudes at all! This show team reminds us

that “our only limitations are ones we allow our mind to make.” Thank you, Miller Family, for inspiring us with your work ethic & touching us with those memorable smiles! Congrats! A BOC Ambassador Scholarship was awarded to Cavin Stockman, a senior from DeLeon, Texas, because of his impressive work ethic and dedication to the agricultural industry. Cavin helps with showmanship clinics to share his knowledge with younger exhibitors. He helps with clipping and fitting at the National Brangus Show, as well as works daily with his own livestock. He also manages to plant his own crops and even bales 3,000 hay bales yearly. When you speak with Cavin, you appreciate his humble spirit, his vast knowledge of farming, cattle and showing, as well as his willingness to help with any task. Congrats Cavin....thanks for being a great ambassador for BOC! Thank you to Chris Morlock at Pursch Motors in Pleasanton, TX and to WS Steel of San Antonio, for helping us make these scholarships possible!

WINNER OF THE 2015 TRAILER GIVE AWAY SPONSORED BY PRODUCERS OF CO-OP TRAILERS We’d like to thank Producers CO-OP Trailers, Denny Douglas and Bloomer Trailers for awarding this amazing new trailer to Sydney Jenkins of Bulverde, Texas. Every BOC Member who attended all three shows in our summer series, was entered in the drawing (one chance for every calf they brought to each show). Thanks Producers CO-OP for supporting BOC & believing in our great kids!

WE RISE BY LIFTING OTHERS We are so very proud to announce our silent auction to benefit the Shawn Leifeste Family raised $13,156! Good things happen when stock show families come together to help one another! We would just like to take a moment to thank everyone who graciously donated items and those of you who generously purchased them.

Watching the silent auction area at our BOC Steer Show in Fredericksburg was overwhelming, uplifting and absolutely amazing! Thank you for helping us support the Leifeste Family... Please continue to pray for our little buddy, Shawn!

Unbelievable Daughters > at Bush, SD

Unbelievable is an incredibly designed calving ease prospect that owns unique neck extension, unquestioned structural soundness, extra special belly depth, and super muscle shape for an Angus bull. Unbelievable is sired by the wildly popular Bismarck bull, yet offers extra depth and hair, no doubt due to his maternally stacked pedigree which consists of a double shot of legendary Flashback laced with VRD and TC Dividend. We envision Unbelievable siring extra-ordinary low birth-weight progeny utilizable in both purebred and hybrid cow herds. We can’t wait for Unbelievable progeny!
