The calf reports are in and we’ve seen enough to know that Loaded Up is the real deal and is here to stay. Loaded up is siring great bulls and females. Functional, practical cattle that have the eye appeal and look to be the profitable kind. He has the uncanny ability to sire cattle that come out of their shoulder correctly, are good fronted, good chested and still maintain the body and depth as cattlemen we should demand. He is a complete out-cross to Dream On. Keep the bases LOADED UP, for proven, profitable genetics.

“Just tell us what you want. What’s the target?”

grading system is plumb outdated. Some would say the same for Quality Grade.

That request was made decades ago to a noted executive from one of the major beef packers. The requestor, visibly frustrated, was one of a group of seedstock producers. If memory serves, the central theme of the meeting was the dog-eared debate about whether carcass quality or yield pays more over the long haul.

Despite such a broad and static target for so long, still too many cattle end up too far from the bulls eye.

“The target is the same as it has been for at least the past 30 years,” was the reply from the packer man, who was also visibly frustrated. “We want Choice, Yield Grade 2 cattle.” Period. Certainly, lots of things are different these days, everything from instrument grading, to the creation of new beef cuts and convenience products, to more precise valuation of cattle for specific value attributes, at least as part of branded and value-added programs. In the great scheme of things, though, achieving the aforementioned target would please more packers than not: a level of quality that should reduce unsatisfactory eating experiences and enough carcass yield to make worthwhile providing the experience, notwithstanding the fact that the current yield

118 September/October 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

Consider the most recent checkoff-funded National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA). Of the $49.06/carcass in lost quality opportunity, 81% stems from Quality Grade ($15.75), Yield Grade ($12.91) or carcass weight ($10.88). The latter two are worse than in the previous NBQA in 2011. These lost opportunities are derived from compliance with consensus target consists established by packers, retailers and restaurateurs. In other words, ideally, what is the ideal mix of Quality Grade, Yield Grade and such across the industry? For Quality Grade, the target was 5% Prime, 70% Choice (equally divided between Low Choice and the upper two-thirds of Choice) and 25% Select. For Yield Grade (YG), the targets was 10% YG1, 45% YG2, 40% YG3, 5% YG4. For carcass weight: 20% at 600-800 lbs.; 30% at 801-900 lbs.; 50% at 901-1,000 lbs. “While the industry is improving the quality of beef being produced, quality is being accompanied by an increase in size and fat-

ness,” according to the 2016 NBQA. “The mean USDA Yield Grade in 2016 was 3.1, increasing slightly compared to the mean yield grade of 2.9 in 2011. More significantly, however, the frequencies of YG 3, 4 and 5 in 2016 increased compared to 2011. The largest percentage of carcasses (29.9%) was Choice YG 3. During the same time period, the percentage of carcasses grading Choice or Prime increased 10% to 71%. Besides the significant increase in Choice and Prime carcasses, the NBQA notes that positives include a high mobility score for cattle entering packing plants and the fact that the number of blemishes, condemnations and other attributes that impact animal value remain small, according to a synopsis by the Beef Board. The NBQA has been conducted every five years for the past 25 years. It and subsequent industry goals and tactics from each is one reason why injection site blemishes are no longer the major problem they once were, why average Quality Grade increased and excess fat declined. Incidentally, the value of lost opportunities in quality issues was $63.27/carcass in 1991. It declined to $47.30 in 2011 before edging higher to the most recent $49.06. Keep in

mind that comparing dollar values between audits is a dicey business since market conditions affecting value vary widely between audits. Instead the dollar values provide a relative gauge of progress over time. Individually, each audit also provides a glimpse of the dollars at stake. Based on approximately 24.2 million steers and heifers slaughtered last year, that about $1.2 billion worth of lost opportunity, due only to the specific quality attributes highlighted by the audit: Quality Grade, Yield Grade, carcass weight, hides and branding, offal/carcass condemnation. “Among areas for possible improvement, are the fact that there was more bruising (although bruising was less severe) and the fact that more than 30% of livers harvested did not pass inspection and were condemned,” according to the report. Although not stated this way, from the following, you could be forgiven for believing that improvement would come simply from beef packers placing a higher priority on consumer eating satisfaction with beef. “The eating satisfaction quality factor, which was primarily defined as ‘customer satisfaction’ by all sectors, was ranked second by all marketing sectors except packers, who ranked lean, fat, and bone second,” according to the report. “Compared to the 2011 audit, a greater percentage of companies were willing to pay a premium for guaranteed quality attributes. However, overall these companies were willing to pay lower average premiums than the companies interviewed in 2011. While not a single packer listed eating satisfaction as a ‘musthave,’ 55% said they would be willing to pay an average premium of 10% if it could be guaranteed.”

who’s to foot the bill? Like a judge picking a steer to win the show that the crowd considers too this or too that, when those are the only types in the show, packers deal the proverbial cards they’re dealt. Testing tied to such assurances is expensive, too, things like conducting Warner-Bratzler shear force tests on core sample from carcasses. Some companies go further than that in guaranteeing eating satisfaction on specific premium branded products. But, when beef is far and away the highest priced animal protein available to consumers in volume, surely consumers should expect to enjoy eating any beef that is the result of federal inspection and grading. Why it Matters As mentioned, the NBQA offers the industry an invaluable report card of sorts, documenting how well the beef product served direct customers and their customers during a specific window of time. This gauge also offers individual producers a compass. For instance, based on the consensus of the recent audit, the target is 55% YG 1-2 cattle (95% YG 1-3), with 75% that grade Choice or higher and hang carcasses that weigh 6001,000 lbs.

Did someone say the target was Choice 2? Calves that produce feeder cattle, which produce fed cattle that leave carcasses falling outside those parameters are worth less to buyers because they have less value to customers. For someone selling calves at weaning or soon after, even for those selling feeder cattle, subsequent management can alter carcass quality, carcass weight, yield and the incidence of offal and carcass condemnations. But they’ll never have a chance to hit the broad target without enough muscling and inherent marbling ability to start with. Dan Kniffen, owner of Windy Butte Ranch and an assistant professor at Penn State University shares some insight about the importance of the NBQA to individual producers and to the industry, collectively, in a video that can be found with the NBQA at www.bqa.org/national-beefquality-audit. “It gives us the facts and figures to talk to the American consumer and now the global consumer,” Kniffen explains. He emphasizes the NBQA provides science-based information the industry can use to truthfully tell the story of beef quality and wholesomeness to consumers.

Good grief. Perhaps packers didn’t rank eating satisfaction because they believe it’s a given. If that’s the case, then they should eat more random samples of what they harvest and process because spectacular eating failures routinely still exist, from steaks to ground beef. Yes, it’s difficult to guarantee eating satisfaction. For one thing, no single product will satisfy everyone. And, if carcasses fail, whatever satisfaction test is applied, who’s to blame and

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER

To Keep or to Cull Several months ago, I read a popular press article written by a colleague in the animal science discipline. The focus of the article was on culling open cows. The major point of the article was that open cows should always be culled and replaced with heifers. The problem with that statement is that it simply is not true. Under most scenarios, the statement is true – but it is not true in all cases. My colleague has spent too much time in an ivy tower or on the golf course. When I was getting my degrees (BS, MS, PhD) the professors always told the classes in which I was enrolled that cows that fail to wean a calf should be culled and replaced with a heifer. This is not the same statement as the one made by my colleague but it is similar and it, too, is not true. The rule of thumb I taught my students was that when cattle prices are low it pays economically to cull cows and replace them with heifers; but, when cattle prices are high, it pays to keep the cows and sell the heifer calves. The important thing to remember about rules of thumb is, rules of thumb are intended to be broken. The older I have become and the more practical experience I have gained managing the ISU cow herd, operating my own herd and consulting for others across the country, the more I realize that circumstances change and reality can alter textbook jargon. First, let’s examine why a cow may not wean a live calf. Cows can lose calves due to factors not the fault of the cows. (One could argue the factors are never the cows’ fault and so it is irrational to discuss the issue i.e. cull the cows.) But, if the hired man runs over the calf with a skid steer, it is not the cows fault. (That really has happened.) If the cow is bred in that case I definitely would not cull her for losing a calf. Other reasons for not culling a cow that loses a calf include DOA calves due to abnormal presentations, newborn calves found dead in a subzero snow storm, calves that died from respiratory or diarrhea diseases, calves that drown in a flood, etc. You can think of or remember other situations. While there are few legitimate reasons not to cull open cows, there are a few. For example, the bull goes bad (becomes infertile) during the breeding season. A

By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting

severe drought occurs during breeding season and supplementation is too little or too late to provide cows with enough energy to conceive. There are more, but these two I am almost always willing to accept.

for the heifer is $395.78. Consequently, the cow returns $308.44 over feed cost and the replacement heifer returns $279.22. Low prices favor keeping the heifer and selling the cow, as the cow will generate more dollars income.

Earlier in the article, I suggested that if prices are low keep heifers and cull cows. Remember low prices and high prices are relative terms and what is low can be high and what is high can be low. But, let us assume finished cattle are $105:cwt. and 500-lb. heifers are selling for $135:cwt and cull cows are $65:cwt (actual prices during the week of 8-21 to 8-25-17).

On the other hand, let’s assume cattle prices are relatively high i.e. fats sell for $130:cwt., 500-lb. heifers bring $240:cwt. and cull cows have a value of $95:cwt. The same 1,300-lb. cow is worth $1,235 and the 500- lb. heifer calf sells for $1,200. Subtracting the feed bills of $536.78 for the cow and $395.80 for the heifer returns $698.44 for the cow and $804.22 for the heifer. High prices favor keeping the cow and selling the heifer, as the heifer returns more dollars income.

These prices mean a 1,300-lb. cow is worth $845 and a 500-lb. heifer is worth $675. To calculate the cost to feed the cow and heifer, let’s assume MWDGS costs $45:ton delivered, shelled corn is $3.60:bu. (actual values for the week of 8-21-17) and corn yields 200 bu:acre or 24 tons of corn silage. These values calculate into $30:ton (1.5¢ lb.) corn silage and 2.25¢:lb. MWDGS. A diet of corn silage and MWDGS is the lowest cost diet I have found for beef cows, including pasture, depending on the value per acre for land. For comparison, a 2-year feed bill is calculated for the cow because the next calf sold (whether the cow is open or is bred but did not wean a calf) will have two years’ feed bill charged against the gross calf income. A replacement heifer will have 2.5 years of feed bill to charge against the income of the first calf. Another assumption is that the cow will consume an average of 40 lbs. corn silage and 6 lbs. MWDGS per day and the replacement heifer will consume an average of 10 lbs. corn silage and 8 lbs. MWDGS. Accordingly, it costs 73.5¢:d to feed the cow and 33.5¢:d to feed the heifer in year one and 50¢:d in year two and three due to increased feed intake. The 2-year calculated feed cost for the cow is $536.56 and the 2.5 year feed cost

Of course, other factors that ultimately affect economic return such as improved genetic value of a replacement heifer, time value of money, age of the cow, etc. should be considered. These other factors may alter the rule of thumb i.e. low prices favor selling the cow and high prices favor selling the replacement heifer. Yes, real world practicality often replaces textbook ideology. Editors Note: If you have questions about this topic, please feel free to contact Dr. Walker at 309-963-4913, pwalker@ilstu.edu or 578 Old Peoria Rd, Danvers, IL 61732

T

he Caldwell family is no stranger to the show ring or the back drop. Todd and Kim Caldwell both grew up showing cattle in Indiana and Illinois, respectively, and they have passed their love of the livestock industry to their three children Maddie, Olivia and Cole. The Elmwood, Illinois, family works together on their cattle and show pig projects that they show both in state and across the country.

Let’s read more about these siblings and what they enjoy on and off the circuit...

Maddie Caldwell Age: 19 School Info: I am currently a sophomore at Lake Land College in Mattoon, IL studying agriculture business. What species and breeds of livestock do you show: I have shown pigs for ten years now on the local, state, and national level, and occasionally show cattle if my dad is desperate for a showman! What is your favorite show memory and why: As I get older it seems that the memories that stick in my mind are those that don’t include banners or prize money. Instead, it’s those that include my closest family and friends. This past August I got the opportunity to exhibit at my last Illinois State Fair. Although it was tough to hang up my whip for the last time, I left the fairgrounds with more memories that I could have imagined. I got to watch my two siblings exhibit in the grand drive - something I have dreamed of doing my entire show career. What more could a big sister ask for?

Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: My favorite show animal of all time was actually one that I never showed, but occasionally visited in the cattle barn - my sister’s steer, Mario. Although he may not know it, he truly left a lasting imprint on my family and I’s life. I am forever grateful for the experience he gave us at the American Royal in 2015 and know that he watches over us every day. Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: Working through the nerves on show day. What do you like to do outside of the barn/ show ring: I enjoy cooking and spending time with my friends and family. Favorite book or author: This might sound bad, but I am not a fan of reading! My favorite “book” would have to be reading through livestock magazines. Favorite TV show: Greys Anatomy

Favorite food: Anything sweet! What are your career goals: In the future, I hope to transfer to Western Illinois University in hopes to obtain a degree in Agriculture Business. I plan to use my degree to pursue a career in Animal Pharmaceuticals. Do you have a quote or motto you like to follow? If so, what is it? “You’ve got to be good enough, to get close enough, to get lucky enough” Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring: There have been numerous people who have played a role into my show career, but if I took the time to name them all, this article would be far too long for anyone to read over. I would like to take this chance to thank my Mom & Dad. They truly give everything they have in order to see my siblings and I succeed. Thank you will never describe how grateful I am.

Age:14 School Info: Freshmen Elmwood High School

would run up to the fence when I was playing basketball and watch me play. He was such a pet to us all.

What species and breeds of livestock do you show: I show both cattle and pigs. We show all different types of breeds within both of those species. We split the pigs between myself and my two siblings. I usually show crossbred steers and a variety of breeds in the heifers.

Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: cleaning pig pens!

What is your favorite show memory and why: Each show is unique and they all hold a special memory for me. However, one of my all time favorites is winning the 2015 American Royal Steer show with my steer Mario. He was a favorite of mine and I will never forget him.

Favorite book or author: Unstoppable by Tim Green

Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: I have been lucky to have had several special animals but Mario was my favorite. He

What are your career goals: Finish high school and attend a junior college for judging

What do you like to do outside of the barn/ show ring: I play basketball and hang out with my family and friends.

Favorite movie: The Blindside Favorite food: Ice cream or Mexican

Do you have a quote or motto you like to follow? One of the most beautiful qualities in a true friendship is to understand and to be understood. That saying hangs in my room with a picture of myself and my calf. Maddie got it for me for Christmas one year, and I love it. Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring: My family. Without them and without us working together we could not get it all accomplished. It is truly a family effort in our house. We each have our jobs to do and we are always willing to help each other out. I thank my parents for allowing us to do this and supporting us. A special thanks to all of the guys that have helped on the farm. Each one is like an extended family member. (Especially Brandon Jones, he is like a second dad to me!) I am very thankful for all the support each has given me!

Cole Caldwell Age:11

School Info: 6th grader at Elmwood Grade School What species and breeds of livestock do you show: I show pigs and cattle. I have just started to show more cattle. I had a heifer and a steer this summer What is your favorite show memory and why: When I got 3rd overall Land of Lincoln at the Illinois state fair with my steer Artie. Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: My Angus Steer from this past summer. He is really tame and I enjoy working with him. Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: Cleaning pens What do you like to do outside of the barn/show ring: Run cross country and farm with my Grandpa. I like to hang out with my family and friends. Favorite book or author: I really don’t like to read much! Favorite movie: Benchwarmers Favorite food: Tacos What are your career goals: Finish school and go onto college. I would like to farm one day. Do you have a quote or motto you like to follow? To work hard and stay humble. Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring: I would like to thank my dad for all of his help and for always working so hard for our family. I would also like to thank my mom for everything she does for us. I have the best parents.

FEATURE Guided Job Hunting

Guided Job Hunting

YOU SEEK A GUIDE WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE BIGGEST FISH AND PAY FOR GUIDED HUNTS WHEN IT’S ABOUT GETTING THE BIGGEST BUCK, SO WHY NOT SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP WHEN SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT JOB? IT’S A SMART MOVE FOR JOB SEEKERS AS THE “GUIDE” IS USUALLY FREE TO YOU BECAUSE POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS PAY FOR THE RECRUITING SERVICE!

By Lindsay L Allen

A

gricultural recruiting companies are looking for the right candidates to fill openings with their clients and are ready to help job seekers build their résumé and prepare for the application process.

and putting together a possible match for most any position.” Job seekers can submit a résumé to agricultural placement companies, complete other educational and work history paperwork, provide references and other pertinent information (i.e. are you willing to travel or relocate, etc.) and expect a follow up call from the recruiter.

“Our clients expect us to pro vide them with talented candi dates that meet the requirements of the position and we will help candidates explain their knowledge and experiences in a professional manner,” Shannon Worrell, recruiter with Ag 1 Source, says, “Our services are beneficial for not only our client, but also those job searching.”

At that time, the recruiter may conduct a phone interview with the job seeker and begin looking for a match between a company and the job seeker. If and when a match is found, the recruiter will visit with the applicant and begin preparing that applicant for the interview with company information, hiring manager personality, compensation analysis, etc.

According to Glassdoor, corporations receive 250 résumés on average, for each job opening, so the need to stand out and also seek help and guidance is crucial. This is true regardless of the number of applicants for any career opening. “At Hansen Agri Placement we are looking to fill all types of positions involving agriculture, be it farm, ranch, feedlot, swine, dairy, agronomy, agribusiness, animal health, nutrition, lab and research, organics, finance, loans and customer service,” explains Kerry Glandt, recruiter for Hansen Agri Placement, “We have spent many years in building our databases of both employers and candidates

180 September/October 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

“We work hard to make sure our candidates are prepared throughout the whole process. We provide coaching for résumés, help with first impression interviews, phone and video interviewing, compensation negotiations and more,” Worrell notes, “Our clients are searching for the best candidate and we want to put the candidate on the best path to being hired.” A 2015 Gallup poll showed that 51 percent of those who did have jobs were considering new ones, which means there is a very large number of potential number of job seekers and a very real need to rely on agricultural recruiters.

“We wear many hats in our position as a agricultural recruiter. We are a coach when working with candidates to build their files and assist them in putting their best foot forward. We are also advisors in that we will try to assist those that may not qualify for a job due to lack of experience or are trying to change their career and will provide them direction,” Glandt says. “At the end of every day though, we are always looking for those candidates with good experience, who are stable, honest, flexible to relocate in many situations and willing to give it their best.” A huge piece of the job-hunting puzzle is networking. Worrell encourages youth to start keeping a journal log now of people met and their contact information.

“Be mindful of what you put on your social media accounts and develop a professional LinkedIn account or something similar to help set yourself a part,” she emphasizes. The power of networking is seen in a study conducted by Jobvite Index, which found referrals to be hired 55 percent faster than those applicants who were hired through a career site. Keeping this statistic in mind, a journal of your personal contacts and whom you can visit with when applying to certain jobs will certainly be useful.

{

}

Glandt echoes this by saying the strongest candidates for production agricultural jobs are those that were involved in 4-H and FFA, for several reasons.

“These youth are the ones learning the value of a job well done, reliability, leadership and work ethic. Another area of strength is networking, in terms of building strong references. If I see a young adult coming out of college with an animal science degree, but has no internships or work experience within their area of education, I can’t help them. “But if I have a high school kid that has developed four summers of full-time work and may even hold a part-time job during school doing chores and working, I can build his file and place him with a strong employer that can see the foundation that has been laid and will continue to train and educate them,” Glandt says,

FEATURE Guided Job Hunting “History tells me that the 4-H and FFA kids are the ones who go after job experience and internships the majority of the time.” Glandt does encourage youth to spend their summers in high school and college trying various jobs within the industry. “This is the time to change jobs as you know each will last only three months and at the end you should gain a very positive reference and review following that position,” he says, “Three jobs in the three years following college is not the time when you want to be deciding what you want to do.” Job hunting isn’t the easiest or most intuitive process, but Glandt reminds youth

{

that burning bridges with past employers (leading to no references), DUI, drug history and even excessive speeding tickets can all lead to a loss of a job offer being extended, but noted that employers will pay a premium for candidates with strong references, education, good stability, years of experience and a diverse skill set matching what they are asking for. For the older generation looking for new opportunities, it is important to stay up to date with new technologies in order to stand out. With computer programs and smart phones running the world of production agriculture, a majority of employers will be seeking candidates with knowledge of these resources.

“The older generation has a lot to offer the work force with experience and learned patience, but I always encourage this generation to not shy away from technology,” Worrell says. Using agricultural placement companies is as easy as visiting their web page and browsing job openings and/or setting up an account with your résumé. While there are many companies seeking to fill job openings, there are also many candidates seeking employment and venturing into the job hunting world is best to do with a guide in the form of a recruiter who can help with each step along the way.

“History tells me that the 4-H and FFA kids are the ones who go after job experience and internships the majority of the time.”

}

For companies wishing to use a recruiting service, contact the company via the website. Gandt recommends that those wishing to use their service regularly check their e-mail so that they don’t miss a candidates file when it is sent over and to give everyone a phone interview as they might be stronger in person than on paper.

Roundups on the ZBy Virginia Ishmael

194 September/October 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

R

oundups at the ranch were held in the spring and fall and in spite of the work, they were always a time of fun. A few days before it started, my Uncle Lester would have one of their boys trail over their remuda of horses. This usually consisted of 10 to 12 head that would keep them mounted without overworking any one of them.

She was a fine cook and nobody every left her table hungry or late. The women and the kids didn’t eat until later, after the men had gone back to work. It was always fun to listen to the good-natured kidding that went on at the table – good, hardworking ranchmen that enjoyed one another’s company. Invariably, there was someone that had gotten themselves in a pickle that morning and they were usually the brunt of their jokes.

Like my dad, Uncle Lester insisted that a horse worked today would have a full day’s rest tomorrow before returning to work the next day. If he could rest them two days, that was better. My dad and Lester always helped each other and this branched out to the wives and kids.

On one such occasion, they had been rounding up at headquarters and one young cow had lost all patience with the activities of the day and promptly went into a sandplum thicket by the house and sulled. It was an open thicket, so a couple of riders took their lariat ropes down and persuaded her to rethink her course of action.

Early on roundup day, mom would have chickens killed and dressed and rolls, pies and cakes made before Viva, Edna and the other ranch women arrived. My mother believed in sharing the wealth, and as a teenager I helped with the baking. Before that, I peeled potatoes, helped dress chickens, set tables, took care of the younger kids and a million other jobs that were waiting to be done.

Instead of returning to the herd (as planned) she turned bunch quitter and hot-footed it for the creek to the west. Of course, a wild scramble ensued and she again took up residence in a huge plum thicket in that area. The thicket was so dense that a horse couldn’t penetrate it, so my cagey daddy dismounted and went in after her with his little spurs jingling.

No one was exempt and there was always plenty of work to go around. Everyone came from the neighboring ranches to lend a helping hand with the cattle (as you would help them in return). It would give the neighbors a chance to look over your stock and see if any of theirs had crawled through the fences.

They jingled even louder as the cow brought him out again a whole lot faster than he went in, for by now she was madder than a hornet. He couldn’t get back to his horse and his “buddies” (?) were much too hysterical to help him, so he headed for the creek with the cow in hot pursuit.

For example, Mrs. Clark, who lived north of our place, lamented that their “gentleman cow” was prone to travel. Her strict upbringing would never have allowed the word BULL to cross her lips and her little husband didn’t speak at all. She ruled the roost and the rooster.

Daddy was about five foot seven, but his legs were short and the cow was gaining. He flew under a low branch on an elm tree and latched onto it by pulling his legs up as the irate cow sped beneath him like a tornado. He let himself down with a chuckle and to the whoops and hollers of his friends … but wait. Here comes the cow again!

Everyone who helped was invited to come home with my dad to eat dinner. The only exception was anyone that was drinking. My dad was not a prude, but he made it clear that he would not take anyone home to his family that had been boozing. Once in awhile, he had to tell somebody and I was always amazed at how well they took it. Instead of being mad about it, they seemed to respect him for his stand.

This game went on until finally the cow got so mad that she dropped dead in her tracks. Needless to say, pappy was the talk of the table that day. My mother was the only one who felt sorrow for that poor cow. The remorse ended there, because there wasn’t a one of those cowboys that thought any other climax would have been appropriate for a cow with such a sorry attitude.

The roundup crew was loaded into pickup trucks and taken to headquarters, which was quite a distance away. There were women and kids stationed at every window getting a head count as they unloaded so that plates could be added or subtracted, as the case may be. We rang the dinner bell when everything was on the table. My mother was a tough taskmaster, but she was organized to a gnat’s eyelash and by the time the hands were clean, she had her feast served and the women and kids hovering in the background with pitchers of tea and pots of coffee.

Virginia Ishmael grew up on the well-known Z- Ranch near Hardtner, Kan., where her father, T.O. Alley, managed the ranch for 28 years. Media mogul Ted Turner recently purchased this longtime cattle ranch where he now runs buffalo, to the dismay of his new neighbors.

Cattle Producers Cope with Fire and Flood Two weeks after Hurricane Harvey hit and the agricultural losses in Texas along the Gulf Coast are still being tallied. So far, it’s thought more than 100,000 acres of rice has been lost, and most of that area’s cotton crop was either blown away or drowned out. Cattle losses are thought to be lower than other previous hurricanes to hit the area – even though the flooding in some places, particularly in Brahman country around Wharton, Texas – was staggering.

But the overall effect on these herds is yet to be seen. How these cattle will be affected by the stress of the ordeal and the difficulty and inevitable delays in getting feed and water to some will likely show up in reduced performance, if not so much in total numbers. Of course, even when the last stray if rounded up and sent home there are fences, barns, equipment and even houses that have been washed away that will have to be replaced. FFA and 4-H programs in the Houston area were also hit hard, according to reports. Numerous ag barns needed help getting feed for the livestock projects that had been saved even when their owners’ houses were not. Luckily, many generous individuals stepped up to the plate and donated feed, hay and money to those hit hardest. While the outpouring of support for those affected by Harvey has been nothing short of amazing, the road to recovery, especially in many of the small rural communities, will be a long one. They will continue to need help for many months to come. Here are some resources where you can donate to specifically help agricultural folks in the area if you feel led: •The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) is currently working with Texas A&M AgriLife for donations of animal hay and feed. If you

would like to donate, please visit texasagriculture.gov and they will provide your information to your local AgriLife county agent to determine the closest location to you where the greatest need may be met.

•The STAR Fund (State of Texas Agriculture Relief Fund) was created solely with monetary donations from private individuals and companies. STAR Fund money may be used to assist farmers and ranchers in rebuilding fences, restoring operations and paying for other agricultural disaster relief. This can be accessed at texasagriculture.gov. •Cattle Raisers Relief Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association has established the Cattle Raisers Relief Fund to support relief efforts for ranch families affected by disasters like Hurricane Harvey and inevitable future natural disasters. The Cattle Raisers Relief Fund (CRRF) is administered by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization. Donations may be made online by visiting tscra.org or checks can be mailed to TSCRF, 1600 Gendy Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76107. •The Texas Farm Bureau’s Agriculture Research and Education Foundation is accepting taxdeductible donations to aid in the relief effort following the dev-

Meanwhile in Montana While Montana isn’t the only western state to deal with devastating wildfires lately, it’s home to a majority of the largest fires. Some estimates put the number of acres burned at over 1 million to date – and fires are still burning. Drought over the entire state is part of the problem as it is in other parts of cattle country like South Dakota. The only upside is that according to the Montana Stockgrowers Association, the main fires have

occurred in the western part of the state where cattle numbers are fewer and losses have been minimal. Even so, there are people who are hurting as the fires rage on.

If you can help these folks, a cash donation to the Montana Stockgrowers Foundation would be welcome (406) 442-3420. To donate hay, contact the Montana Department of Agriculture’s fire and drought assistance hotline at 1-844515-1571 or check their website http://agr. mt.gov/Fire-Drought-Assistance-2017.

What About Irma? At press time, the second major hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast in the last month was still running wild over Florida and there were no details yet on how producers in Florida

were faring. However, the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries and other groups had put together four temporary shelters for livestock and horses that were evac-

uated. One can only imagine there will be help needed in areas along Irma’s track as well.

Cattle Raisers Issue Warning Amid Uptick in Scams Targeting Ranchers As if hurricanes and wildfires weren’t enough for cattle producers to deal with, there are apparently some scum-of-the-earth types who are taking advantage of folks in increasing numbers. The following is from a press release by an organization, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, that employs a force of Special Rangers in Texas and Oklahoma who specialize in cattle theft and associated crimes. “Over recent weeks, Special Rangers across the state have received reports from ranchers who have been targeted by the scams. The details vary, but most incidents follow a similar theme. A buyer, often from out of state, will call to inquire about cattle, hay or equipment that is for sale. The two parties will agree on a price and the buyer will send a check or cashier’s check, which is where the trouble begins. “The check sent by the buyer will be over the agreed to price, and the buyer will ask that the

214 September/October 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

check be cashed and the extra money wired or given to someone else to pay for transportation and delivery. In some cases, the scammer has no intention of making the purchase. The check is counterfeit, designed to look legitimate for just long enough that it can be cashed and the money wired. In other cases, the scammer will attempt to obtain the items before the check has finally cleared and is found to be counterfeit. In either case, the victim will be left liable for the funds while the crook enjoys the ill-gotten proceeds, and potentially the stolen livestock or equipment. “Knowledge is power in these sorts of situations,” said Larry Gray, the director of law enforcement at TSCRA. “If you are aware of the red flags and act cautiously you can avoid falling victim to such scams.”’ Gray offered a few tips to stay safe: 1. Try to do business with people you know. When working

with an unknown buyer, try to verify their information through a third party. 2. Be cautious about accepting checks—even a cashier’s check—from people you do not know. It can be difficult to pursue a remedy if the transaction goes bad. 3. Never accept a check for more than the selling price if you are expected to give the excess to someone else. 4. If you do accept a check, contact the institution that issued it to verify the authenticity, and if possible ask that the check be drawn from a bank with a branch in your area. 5. Be especially wary if someone insists that you send funds by wire transfer. 6. Make sure the check has finally cleared before you deliver the items, and save all your documentation.

SC ANNOUNCEMENTS Cattlemen Launch Month-long Media Campaign for Comprehensive Tax Reform The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has kicked off a media and advertising campaign that will shine a spotlight on how various federal tax provisions impact America’s cattle and beef producers. The campaign, which will focus heavily on the death tax, aims to build support in Washington for comprehensive tax reform that makes our tax code fair for agricultural producers. The campaign will be centered around a new website, CattlemenForTaxReform.com, and will run through September. “We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enact truly comprehensive tax reform, and we can’t afford to let this opportunity pass or to get it wrong,” said NCBA President and Nebraska cattleman Craig Uden. “Family ranchers and farmers deserve a full and permanent repeal of the onerous death tax, which charges them in cash on the often-inflated appraised value of their property and equipment. This campaign will shine a spotlight on the stories of real ranchers who have had to deal with this issue, and it will also highlight current tax provisions that we need to maintain, such as stepped-up basis, cash accounting, and deducibility of interest payments.”

In addition to the launch of the new website, the campaign kicked off with a two-minute video that will be heavily promoted on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms. The campaign’s first video features fifth-generation California rancher Kevin Kester, whose family struggled for a decade to pay a large death-tax bill after his grandfather passed away. With the specter of the death tax still looming, Kevin is forced to spend precious time and energy – not to mention thousands of dollars – planning for how to pass the ranch on to his children and grandchildren.

“Without a doubt the biggest challenge that keeps me up at night is trying to figure out how to pass the ranching operation – our family operation on to the next generation,” Kester says in the video as he drives across his Bear Valley Ranch near Parkfield, Calif. “The current tax code is… leading toward more fragmentation of farms and ranches, which is not good for the environment or our ranchers and farmers.”

Over the coming weeks, NCBA will roll out several other promoted videos and infographics featuring profiles of ranchers and other members of the cattle-production community. The products will enable American cattlemen and women to share their priorities for tax reform in their own words. The campaign will also connect grassroots ranchers and producers with their elected officials on Capitol Hill as tax-reform legislation is considered this autumn. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there on the tax debate – especially when it comes to who’s affected by the death tax,” Uden said. “This campaign will educate elected officials, the media, and the general public about how the tax code affects our American farmers and ranchers, who literally feed the world.”
