Whether you are 9 or 90, if you’re involved in the cattle industry, then most likely you recognize the name Griswold Cattle Company (GCC). The Griswold family has a long history, in fact more than a century, in the purebred segment. Today, the family business includes many other phases of the beef industry with headquarters in Stillwater, Okla., and an additional location in Dupree, S.D. “We grew up with grandparents and parents raising Angus seedstock. It was something we developed a love and an appreciation for and wanted to have as our livelihood,” says John Griswold, who directs GCC operations. The family tree includes parents Joe and Elaine; sons John, Greg and Garfield and their families who reside in Stillwater; plus David, Joseph and daughter Melanie and families of Miami, Okla. “Joseph and David have cattle operations of their own, but they help us a lot, and they run about 200 head of mother

cows for us. Dad and Mom’s advice is still needed, plus Dad oversees the haying and planting of wheat pastures. We couldn’t do what we do without the backing and help of family, and we wouldn’t want to either,” stresses John. The family background, a desire to raise good cattle, academic knowledge, as well as hands-on education, and the fortune of meeting and establishing relationships with savvy cattlemen, have combined to make GCC a powerhouse in the cattle industry. “Dad always told us, ‘when you go to college it’s who you meet that’s important’ and that has played out in our lives and operation just like he said it would,” describes John. John, the oldest of the three brothers, is a 1985 Oklahoma State University (OSU) graduate with a degree in animal science. He clipped steers and started trading steers in college, something he continued doing after graduation, and folks started noticing.

“I helped the Loomis family with their steer selection and clipping, and they had a real successful run. Then I worked for Cal Herring in Denver, the year they had the champion and reserve champion pen of feeder steers. Those two associations really stand out to me, as I look back on how things evolved,” recalls John, adding that Greg and Garfield would also graduate from college and, over time, the three began their extension of the family business. The hard work and cow savvy of their dad, Joe Griswold, would pay off when John had the opportunity to purchase back a female that Todd Thrasher had purchased from Joe. The cow was known as 066, and she proved invaluable to putting the new generation of Griswold brothers on the map. She is the granddam of Chill Factor, and they now have more than 50 direct granddaughters of this history-making matriarch in the program. Her influence is still heavily represented in many top sellers at Griswold Cattle, “if they have 066 in the

pedigree--they’re good,” says Greg. Chill Factor was used on the family Angus cows and their own small herd, plus many others would purchase semen on the bull. Over a span of 17 years, Chill Factor is still a “go-to” maternal sire. Just this year at the National Western Stock Show, the Grand Champion steer was out of a Chill Factor daughter. His daughters are producing cattle that win championships across the nation. In 2001, John and his brothers began to envision their operation on a larger scale and just as their dad had told them from an early age, who they knew would be critical to the next development step of Griswold Cattle. “The Birkeland family of South Dakota and I became friends through buying steers. They had the best herd of cattle I had ever seen. In 2002, everyone knew it was really dry, and I started calling Gary Birkeland once a week just to see what pairs where bringing in Faith, South Dakota. One week I called Gary, and he said his brothers and him had made a decision and they were going to sell their cowherd and he wanted me to come up and look at them. I went straight to Dad, who said, ‘You need to leave today to get these cows bought.’” The three brothers would also rely on the help of Ed Burke, a banker and cattleman in Genoa, Neb. They had established a strong connection with Ed, who believed in their ability. With his help, they were able to purchase 1,309 pairs, 365 bred heifers and lease the Dupree, S.D., Birkeland operation. Ten years later, Ken Birkeland still runs the cows in Dupree. “Ken has forgotten more about cows than most people know. He is a dear friend to us and has been invaluable to our success. It has taken all of the family to coordinate the logistics of having cattle 800 miles apart. It has become a second home to us, as we are there many days from March to October. Bryson Johnson about lives with the cows during calving and breeding – him and Ken have about as much fun together as two people could. They love the South Dakota cow base,” says John. Also in 2001, they began marketing cattle through Christy Collins’ Exposure Sale, which really elevated their program. It was

also here where they would sell half-interest in a three-quarter Maine bull (Todd Thrasher and Dale Newman raised) named Irish Whiskey. “Irish Whiskey gave a new look to Maine cattle. He didn’t just make them good, he made them great. His first calf crop started the Whiskey craze nationwide. I would say Irish Whiskey has produced more great ones than any bull I’ve ever been associated with--so far,” says John. Irish Whiskey clicked on the Birkeland cowherd and with the combination of Irish Whiskey genetics and the prestige of the Exposure sale, Griswold genetics continued to climb the ladder of success. In 2005, Griswold Cattle reached another milestone when they purchased 500 cows from Tim Ohlde. “I stopped to buy semen from Tim on my way to Dupree. I ended up spending the whole day helping him haul pairs and looking at some great Angus cattle. During the day, he told me the cows were for sale. My brothers and I saw this as a real opportunity. It didn’t take long for us to arrange to buy the OCC females. Greg’s true love is good Angus cattle. He knows them like the back of his hand and can tell you how a cow is bred generations back without ever seeing an ear tag or a freeze brand. He handles all the registered Angus cattle and a pretty intensive ET program,” says John. The acquisition of the OCC cow base led to the development of the annual Grass to Grid bull sale held each year at Jeff Bourquin’s sale facilities in Follett, Texas. “Jeff buys thousands of feeder cattle and calves every year. When we were first discussing having a bull sale, he needed quality bulls for his customers, and he liked the type of cattle that we were raising. After a lot of talking, we struck a deal to hold the sale in Follett. Jeff knows the kind of bulls we raise will produce the kind of calves he needs to make our customers profitable,” explains John. Their bull sale is held in April, and this year they marketed 180 SimAngus, MaineAngus, and Angus bulls at an average of a little

over $4,700. In addition, to the Maine and Angus programs, in 2008 they would purchase a Simmental bull named SVF Steel Force with Ratcliff Farms, Vinita, Okla. This would be the beginning of one of the most dominating sires the Simmental breed had seen. Steel Force progeny have won every major show across the nation and demanded top dollar in both progeny and semen sales. A large facet of the company is the feeder calf segment. Griswold Cattle helps to sell many of their customers’ calves. “Garfield keeps us focused on valuebased genetics and the fact that any cattle we produce have to perform in the commercial segment,” stresses John adding, “Garfield sits in a sale barn most days every week and is invaluable in his ideas, the people that we meet, the cattle that we sell, and keeping us up on the markets. He keeps our purebred program in check with the commercial cattlemen.” Another opportunity arose in 2010, when Griswold Cattle had the chance to form a partnership with Kim Klotz of Seward, Neb. Klotz has tremendous knowledge of pricing, hedging and corn prices, as well as oversees the semen sales account 1#1/0Ǝù÷øùƎƎēƑtheshowcircuit.com

This column is the fifth in a series exploring careers that our young readers might be interested in pursuing, through the eyes and experiences of successful people in a variety of professions.

Trent Loos, Host of Loos Tales, Rural Route and other radio programs I grew up in West Central, Ill. near Quincy. The first Loos came to Illinois from Germany in 1832, and my father still farms the same land they originally settled on. We had a typical diversified farm: a few cattle, hogs, corn and soybeans. I never took any interest in the farming aspect, but rather it was the cattle and hogs that really got me going. At the age of 12, I bought two purebred Spot gilts and launched into the purebred breeding stock business. By the time I graduated high school in 1984, I had 60 sows. I had a chance to play baseball on a scholarship, but I decided livestock was my future and chose not to go to college. My father bought half of my sow herd, we partnered and built the operation to where we were selling about 2,000 commercial F1 gilts and 300 boars each year. Purebred Limousin and Angus cattle were added to the mix in 1990, and at our peak we sold about 60 bulls each year. Today, my wife Kelli and I ranch in central Nebraska with our three daughters, and we have 200 cows, 40 sows, 40 horses and 20 meat goats. What do you do? If I meet someone in an airport and they ask me “What do you do?”, I always tell them that I am a rancher. That is because I believe there is no job that is more important in improving human lives than those of us who tend to land and livestock in the production of food. In addition to caring for animals, I host 6 radio shows each day and write a weekly column – both with the mission of connecting the farm to the fork. Thirteen years ago, I decided that people did not know enough about who, where and how their food was produced; so I explored all avenues with the goal of educating consumers. I get to travel the world speaking to audiences about the importance of modern farming practices and meeting hundreds of amazing people in the industry. Each year I speak in about 35 states, Canada and Australia about how important farmers and ranchers are to the general public. How did you get into this? As a 6th generation U.S. farmer, I suppose I didn’t really even consider any other profession. The advocacy work for agriculture started simply because I got fed up with individuals within the animal rights community attempting to mislead the consumer into believing that we should get rid of animal agriculture. For years, Kelli and I would complain to each other about how the kid in the grocery store didn’t even know where his milk comes from. One day we finally decided to do something about it. I walked into Jim Thompson’s radio studio in Spearfish, SD, in May of 1999 and told him I was Trent Loos, a 6th generation United States farmer and I wanted my own radio show. Today, Loos Tales is on the radio in 19 states with about 3 million daily radio and web listeners. What do you like about your job? I don’t have a job per se. I have a passion for agriculture and what it does

400 1#1/0Ǝù÷øùƎƎēƑtheshowcircuit.com

AN AGRICULTURE ADVOCATE to improve human lives around the world. You show me a country without a strong agriculture system, and I will show you a country where the people are struggling. I truly like the balance between hands-on ranching and the opportunity to share ag stories with people that don’t know the truth. I enjoy the interaction with non-farm people – like the day I spoke at Ag Day LA with 200 Los Angeles school teachers. However, the complete thrill of bringing cows home on horseback and watching my 14-year-old daughter ride a horse and handle cattle like no other is the highlight of any week. It is the combination of hands-on ranching, teaching three girls what is truly important in life and the ability to shed light on the reality of agriculture with those who have been so badly misinformed that drives me. What are the toughest challenges? It is sometimes challenging to juggle my schedule between jobs that need to be done on the ranch and travels to educate the unknowing. There is always one more thing that needs to be done online or a speaking engagement that seems like another great opportunity to present the information. In addition, there is the challenge of getting the information to those that need it most. I find right now the “cool” thing is for celebrities, including chefs, trying to be trendy and as a result they mislead people. Ellen Degeneres regularly has guests from the animal rights community on her program talking about why you should not consume meat, milk and eggs, and she has (yet) to accept my request to be on her show to share another point of view. In one week, 600 people sent in suggestions to Ellen for me to be a guest, and she simply ignores the plea to share the truth in food. Do you need a college degree? Since I don’t have a college degree for what I do and I’ve been doing it a while, I guess I don’t really need one. I honestly believe that depending on what you plan to do, college is highly overrated in our society. I would never discourage anyone from going to a school of higher learning, but I would never tell anyone that you have to go to be successful. I frequently hear people say, “Well that is not what my degree was in.” A college degree does not teach you about a particular subject, as much as it teaches you how to succeed. It teaches you how to interact with others and develop friends that you may call on any time later in life. It teaches you the importance of personal communication. Some of us do not need to spend four years in school to get that, others do. My advice to anyone who asks is always follow your own passion in life. Whether that leads you to college or not, if you follow your heart relentlessly you will succeed. How can someone get started in your line of work? The average age of the United States farmer is two years older than the average age of the residents of St. Petersburg, Florida, a retirement com-

Trent Loos family munity. My point is that everyone knows the farmer/rancher is aging, and we need another crop of young ones to get involved. Yes, the capital requirement today is unbelievable, but I assure you that no matter what part of the country you live in, there is group of aging farmers/ranchers who would love to have some young family come in and work into a sweat equity position. If I can be critical for a bit, I believe that the biggest change in mindset with young folks today is the lack of willingness to start at the ground floor and work their way up into a management position. The truly effective leaders in business can relate to the people they work with and supervise because they have “been there and done that.” As far as advice on being an advocate, I would suggest you don’t do what we did for 10 years and whine about how stupid the consumers are. Get involved today, and make sure what people know is so. If you overhear something that is incorrect or see an opportunity to share your production story at the grocery store, don’t pass up the chance. That one-to-one relationship does more to build confidence in American food production than all the slick advertising we can buy. What is a typical day like for you? I typically spend about four hours each day on a computer researching and producing radio programs. I am constantly looking for one more angle that may assist in explaining the importance of meat, milk and egg consumption. If I am home, I truly love starting the day doing chores and observing animal behavior and the changes that happen from one day to the next. At 8:30 every morning the Rural Route radio program starts, and I have allowed radio production to control my day as if I were milking cows on a schedule. It is very regimented and there are deadlines every day. If I am traveling for speaking engagements, the daily chores are replaced with conversations and interaction with people. That interaction with people is very important to me and to my role in sharing the story of agriculture. The most surprising thing? Follow your heart and don’t listen to the people who tell you what you can’t do. You can make anything happen. I am a farm kid who loves farming and wants the world know how important it is. Because of my willingness to follow my passion, I get calls every month from other countries asking me to share my passion and the importance of agriculture. So the surprise is that others care about your passion if you let it be displayed. Remember that you are an expert in your own experiences, so share those experiences. Anything you wish somebody would have told you? They did and I heard it: “If it is to be, it is up to me.” Today too many people sit back and wait on the masses to get the ball rolling. I can share example after example of where one person makes a difference and moves a mountain. Always remember you have to live with the decisions that you make every day for the rest of your life; but you also have to live with the decisions that you don’t make every day for the rest of your life.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN...

The Life of

...I just can’t wait to be on the road again. That has certainly been the theme song for the Sure Champ team this summer. For the past five weeks my interns, our sales team and myself have been on the road attending seven junior national events. We’ve traveled from Des Moines to Ohio to Nebraska, back to Ohio and then landed in Louisville before I climbed into my own bed and never appreciated my pillow so much. The experience has been amazing, I’ve seen more good livestock in those five weeks than I’ve probably have seen in my whole life, and getting to see old friends and make new ones was certainly a highlight. So what does one learn when traveling across the country to junior livestock shows? Everyone does it a little differently. At World Pork Expo, don’t worry about stopping at McDonald’s for lunch; there will be an unlimited supply of food three times a day, with overflowing amounts of ice cream. The National Junior Shorthorn Association does a Top Five Heifers. And yes, I did a fist pump and little holler when we realized all the juniors in the Top Five were our Sure Champ customers. At the National Simmental Classic, you must compete in a required number of educational contests in order to compete in the showring. And I am pretty sure the next Bobby Flay or Pioneer Woman will come out of the Angus breed because their Cook-Off Contest will knock your socks off. I am also blessed to be working in an industry that contains some of the most wonderful people. I think judge Eldon Krebs said it best in his Grand Drive selection at the National Junior Hereford Expo (NJHE). “I’ve never worked with a more polite set of kids, and what’s really impressive they don’t have earrings and they don’t have tattoos.” There are a lot of not so happy things going on in the world, and I realize that our industry isn’t perfect, however there are a lot of really, REALLY, good people in agriculture.

An Ag Girl

I spoke with a family that was attending a junior national for their very first time. They live in town, but their young daughter idolizes her older farm cousin, so they decided to let her getting involved in showing cattle. They weren’t able to provide much direction as their daughter bounced from contest to contest, or began to fit her heifer on show day, and weren’t so such about all this cattle showing. I reassured them that whether their daughter chooses to remain in agriculture in the long run or choose a career path outside of agriculture, letting her be involved with junior livestock programs was one of the best decisions they could have ever made. Those banners are fun to win but the confidence, public speaking ability and respect that is learned from the agriculture community is invaluable. No summer camp can teach that. Finally, I have said it before but the power of a thank you card is amazing. Between the JNHE and the National Simmental Classic I was able to go home for six hours. I didn’t even get to see our house in the daylight. However, as I sorted through a huge pile of mail I came across two thank you cards from two families that had attended the Tusa Show Camp, an event that Sure Champ helped sponsor. The cards expressed their gratitude and the young girls told me how much they learned and were enjoying working with their projects. One family even included a picture of them in their camp T-shirts. Those thank yous made all my travel, time spent away from my new husband and our own cattle worth it. During the Senior Showmanship Finals at the JNHE each of the finalists were given the microphone to say thank you to those that had helped them get to where they are today. It was certainly heartwarming to watch all those young people say thank you. I think there may have been a few wet eyes in the house. Whether we are a sponsor, staff member, chairman, junior board member or exhibitor, a lot of hard work and long hours are put into livestock shows. However, I will never forget the memories I made this summer, and can’t wait until the next livestock show rolls around.

“We give MULTIMIN 90 at birth, branding, breeding & on all of our bulls Ž

Producers know that we use MULTIMIN 90 on our own herd and that we’re sold on it. They see the success we’ve had with it and make the decision to use it on their herds. It’s spreading by word of mouth. Producers are saying “Doc’s got me on the blue stuff and they want it. We AI using MULTIMIN 90 on customers’ heifers to help synch their program and we’re seeing a 10% to 15% increase (from 55% to 70%) with settling rates and that’s a BIG DEAL. In our bull breed programs with first calf heifers, we’re seeing 96% to 97% conception rates and second calf heifers a rate of 94% —again that’s really good! Before MULTIMIN 90 we were only seeing an 82% rate.

ting immune response from vaccine on the first shot just because of the way they act. They don’t break and we’re just not getting the number of pulls we used to. No wonder producers are saying “Doc’s got me on the blue stuff and they want it!

With MULTIMIN 90 we’ve seen benefits on the reproductive side. On the herd health side we’ve seen some really impressive results on calf sickness, mortality and morbidity. We used to treat 15–20 head, how we treat 1 or 2. We’ve pretty much eliminated health issues and treatment. And in our stocker cattle, we’re using a lot less antibiotics. We give them an initial shot of MULTIMIN 90 and another after 60 days. They seem to have a good solid immune system. I believe 90% of the cattle are get-
