OKLAHOMA

OKLAHOMA CLUB CALF ASSOCIATION CLUB CALF ASSOCIATION

president’s note... The smell of fresh cut alfalfa, dust in the wheat fields, judging camps and leadership camp means only one thing—it is summertime in Oklahoma! Our members are just as busy in the summertime as they are during show season. Whether they are helping on family farms, working for someone else, or attending many camps throughout the summer, we are proud to have such an active membership. Many of you attended different leadership camps throughout the summer such as the Washington Leadership Conference and FFA Alumni Leadership camp, 4-H State Roundup, the AFR Leadership Summit and Farm Bureau’s Safety Camp. This is where our future leaders learn leadership skills and how to apply them in their schools, community, state and nation. This makes me excited for the future of our state to know that we do have youth that can make a difference in this world, which means our future has hope! One thing you can bet on is that agriculture kids don’t mind getting their hands dirty and helping someone else be successful, even if it means putting their feelings on the back burner. Putting others before yourself, standing up for what is right and finding a way to step beyond the boundary of whatever life deals you…just what our society needs! I know our members do that in their everyday lives; maybe as adults we should take a page from their book and apply it into our lives. Speaking of books, with summertime in full swing it only means that school, county fairs and state fairs are just around the corner and the new school year will be in full swing. I wish everyone a happy and successful school year. To our senior members: remember take advantage of every opportunity that God has put in front of you, not just in the show ring but in your life. We don’t know what tomorrow holds, so make the best of today. Until next time, good luck, God bless and remember IT ALL STARTS BEFORE SUNRISE.

The housing recovery: will iT lasT? The housing market looks to be getting stronger, which could be taken as an omen of more generally good economic news to come. After all, home values are an important barometer of consumer wealth. Home construction is a significant fraction of the U.S. economy. Both of those elements had taken significant hits in recent years.

The rebound in home prices The average home value (as measured by the S&P/Case-Shiller 10-City Composite Home Price Index) shrank 33% from 2006 to 2009. 1 But since those difficult days, home prices have begun to recover. As of the latest data (at the end of 2013’s first quarter), the S&P 10-City Composite had gained 5.4% from its recession low, and most of that gain took place during the past year.1

Courtesy of Matthew E. O’Donnell Vice President Morgan Stanley

Housing starts are now up 23.6%, year over year, supporting a solid growth trajectory in 2013.

Overall, S&P/Case-Shiller home price indexes cover 20 metropolitan real estate markets around the United States. All 20 of those markets showed solid gains from their year-ago levels in the March 2013 report. Phoenix, which saw some of the steepest price declines of the past decade, led the way with a 23.2% recovery. Of the remaining 19, Detroit was the only city whose rate of growth did not increase.2

homebuilding follows apace With home prices rising, construction activity should recover as well. Housing starts are now up 23.6%, year over year, supporting a solid growth trajectory in 2013. More importantly, new housing permits, a leading indicator for future construction, have been rebounding even more strongly, to a 925,000-unit pace in January, the highest rate since June 2008.3

Builders are building because demand has picked up, as evidenced by the shrinking inventory of unsold homes. New home sales surged nearly 16% to an annual rate of 437,000 units in January--the strongest gain since July 2008. Existing home sales came in a little weaker, but in both cases, the data have maintained an upward trend since last June, keeping the housing recovery in place.3

Footnotes/Disclaimers

Other measures of market strength come from the National Association of Realtors (NAR). As of January, NAR’s measure of buyer traffic is up a whopping 40% from year-earlier levels, but the companion measure of seller traffic has held steady. That’s resulted in a near-record low of inventory for sale – it would take just 4.1 months to eliminate the supply of unsold new homes. The inventory of existing homes, at 4.2 months, is the lowest since April 2005, when the housing boom was near its peak.3

1Source: S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC. The S&P/Case Shiller 10-City Composite Home Price Index is an unmanaged index that is calculated monthly to reflect the average prices recorded for single family home sales in 10 major U.S. cities-Boston, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Data are as of January 2013 and reported on March 26, 2013. The S&P/Case Shiller 10-City Composite Home Price Index has been calculated monthly from then-current market reports since May 2006; index values prior to that date were calculated from historical real estate transaction records using the same methodology. You cannot invest directly in any index. Past performance does not assure future results.

A third measure of market prospects is the monthly expectations survey by the mortgage bank Fannie Mae. They report that nearly half of the people they polled (48%) believe home prices will go up in the next 12 months. The number who fears home prices will decline was just 10%, the lowest level ever recorded in the survey. Similar numbers believe that rental prices will also go up in the year ahead.4

2Source: Home Prices Accelerate in January 2013 According to the S&P/CaseShiller Home Price Indices, S&P Dow Jones Indices press release, March 26, 2013. 3Source: Trends & Projections, Standard & Poor’s, March 2013. 4Source: Consumers’ Positive Housing Attitudes Withstand Fiscal Concerns, Fannie Mae press release, April 8, 2013.

capiTalizing on The recovery There are significant implications in this turnaround for investors as well as homeowners. Certain industries stand to benefit from a housing recovery. Homebuilders themselves are not the only business actors who stand to gain from a turnaround. Home furnishing and consumer electronics retailers tend to benefit from increased real estate activity. Further down the road, so do certain manufacturers.

Greetings SDJPS members, The summer show season is upon us and flying by. The results listed here are as of June 20, 2013, and with many more shows to add up! As a reminder ALL points will be calculated prior to the South Dakota State Fair this year. The SD State Fair will no longer be a point show for any species. We will hand out awards during the state fair as usual. Make sure you (like us) on facebook! We use this as a means of notifying you of website updates. We will have a meeting of members following the awards presentation this year. Members will nominate six peers to serve a two year term as a SDJPS Ambassador. Ambassadors will assist and vote on any changes that are recommended. Ambassadors will also help promote SDJPS as an organization. So be thinking about who would be good representatives. As always travel safe and have fun! Sincerely,

Audra Scheel

Feeding to WIN “Avoiding

the Summertime Slump”

Professor to Producer

T

by Dr. Paul Walker, Illinois State University

hree factors determine how much cattle will eat and they are rumen fill, propionic acid level of the blood and social competition. Cattle that are not aggressive eaters should be pair-fed. Cattle fed singularly tend to be conservatory. That is, they will not eat all of their feed at one time but will save a little for later.

our case it’s protein supplement, beet pulp, additives and a little whole oats or steam flaked corn). We really don’t feed very much grain to our heifers because cattle were developed as forage eaters. Too much grain puts on fat in the wrong way on heifers. As the heifers are eating their “grain,” the girls put out one to three flakes of hay into each pen. Each pen also contains a water tank, as cattle will always drink water after eating. This same procedure is followed at shows, too.

Cattle fed in pairs or groups will eat more because their internal drive motivates them to eat their share. This is generally true if the individual animal is full-fed. This assertion does not hold true for cattle that are limit-fed grain. In our show barn, we start calves in small groups of two or three. Once the cattle are “on-feed,” each animal is fed singularly in a separate pen to meet its specific needs. In our show barn, the feed bunks in each pen face each other, so when the cattle are fed they can see each other eating. This management procedure encourages less aggressive cattle to eat because the other cattle are eating (similar to group feeding encouraging eating competition).

Regardless of the season of the year, the cattle are “worked” just prior to eating. In our case, worked means hair grooming (blowing, brushing, etc. in the colder months and rinsing, brushing, etc. in the warmer months). Cattle should be worked prior to feeding for two reasons. For one, working cattle is an element of stress. For “road broke” cattle it is low-level stress as they are used to being brushed, etc. But the act of working (stress) stimulates interferon production similar to real stress, though at a much lower level.

Cattle eat to meet their energy requirement. Cattle full-fed on a high concentrate diet will meet their energy requirement (propionic acid blood level) before the rumen is filled to capacity. Cattle limitfed grain and provided forage ad libitum will fill the rumen before consuming enough energy to meet maximum gain. Limit-feeding grain is generally the procedure followed for feeding show heifers and prospect steers. A limit-feeding regimen keeps heifers from getting too fat and helps fitters target steers for particular shows. When feeding forage and limited amounts of concentrate, there is a correct procedure that improves digestion and helps keep cattle on feed. Always feed a little long stem hay first, the grain portion second and the bulk of the hay third. Long stem hay stimulates saliva secretion and saliva is necessary to add buffers to the rumen. Grain and smaller particle size forage do not stimulate as much saliva secretion as long stem hay. Increased saliva flow increases feed consumption. At feeding time in our show barn, the girls feed each heifer in each pen a handful (one half flake) of hay. Then each heifer gets her allotment of “grain” (in

Following any stressful event, cattle like to eat because eating raises blood propionate levels; propionate is gluconeogenic; and, glucose gives animals a natural high – eating makes them feel good. This procedure helps keep cattle on feed. In the warmer months, the girls always rinse the cattle prior to feeding (morning and night – the same procedure as at a show) because cooling the cattle on a hot summer afternoon (5 p.m.) encourages cattle to eat more aggressively.

Cattle fed in pairs or groups will eat more because their internal drive motivates them to eat their share. This is generally true if the individual animal is full-fed.

Often, steers being fed higher concentrate diets will enter into a summer slump and maintaining adequate feed intake is difficult. Several feeding procedures can be tried. Some procedures will increase feed intake, sometimes, and some regimens will not. In our show barn, we feed “Probias” on a year-round basis. We also feed about 150 mg/day/calf of AS700 on a year-round basis. These two additives seem to help keep cattle on feed by stimulating beneficial microorganism growth within the rumen and GI tract. We also feed 200 mg/day/calf of Bovatec to help reduce coccidiosis and bloat. If maintaining energy intake is a problem, adding vegetable oil to the diet can increase energy intake without increasing volume of intake. There are several good products on the market that can produce desirable results. I’ll never forget what a reader told me about one of my articles several years ago; and, I’ll never forget my curt, less than polite response. He said that following my feeding procedures took too much time and he wasn’t going to feed that way. My response was, “That is okay – that is why we win and you lose.” Remember, the cup is half-full, not half-empty, and anything worth doing is worth doing right. That usually means it takes longer.

TECH TRENDS

SO GIST O L O Y R B M E N A E B O T T N YOU WA

Q: What is an embryologist? you define the term “embryologist?” The term is often used incorrectly to describe a number of roles and A: Can responsibilities from veterinarians to embryo technicians. The term embryologist is more correctly applied to

technician responsibilities involving in vivo embryos, in vitro embryos, or embryos involved in the cloning program. Duties often include searching, embryo handling, grading, freezing and preparation for transfer. Often, these individuals may also have responsibilities that include record keeping and data entry, as well as client communication. Embryologists also require significant experience to be proficient at all tasks that are required, and to be able to process large numbers of embryos each day.

What attributes, experience and education do I need? Most importantly, embryologists must possess a passion for the seedstock and livestock industry. Embryologists are exposed to many elite producers, cattle and genetics. Passion and desire will provide an incentive to go the extra mile for a client and their cattle. Another important component is a quality education in math and science. Personal traits such as organizational skills, attention to detail and work ethic are also important to being a successful embryologist. There may be long demanding days that require intense focus and organization.

Q: Do I need experience before I begin my role as an embryologist? hands-on experience may help you determine whether or not you have chosen a career path that is A: While right for you, it is not a necessary attribute required for employment. For example, Trans Ova Genetics has protocols and procedures that will be taught – an individual will train and perfect these procedures A: specific during their first several months as an embryologist. if I’m interested in reproductive technologies, but I don’t think being an Q: What embryologist is the right position for me? embryology does not sound like a career that is right for you, there numerous roles involved in A: Ifreproductive technologies. Most in vivo embryo collection that is commonly referred to as “flushing” is performed by licensed veterinarians. A veterinary degree has been necessary to prescribe and administer necessary drugs as well as perform procedures such as embryo collection, pregnancy determination, cystic ovarian disease, etc. Some states provide a certification program for non-veterinarians. Many of these states have education requirements and may have certification examinations. Significant experience is required to become proficient with donor collection and embryo transfer. Other roles such as donor and recipient herdsman, client service, information technology, research, semen sorting, cloning, and accounting are also very important pieces to an overall puzzle that results in multiplying success for producers.
