Bishop SDA Church Honors Congregant Admired as ‘A Force for Good’

Imagine being so loved and appreciated by your fellow believers that when you died, they sent for one of Jesus’ own disciples so he could bring you back from the dead.

According to the New Testament’s Book of the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 9, verses 3643, this happened to a kind woman named Dorcas, who was resurrected by the Apostle Peter.

Now imagine, as a modern-day believer, being compared to Dorcas for your good deeds, and honored in front of your entire congregation with words of praise, a plaque, a gorgeous bouquet of roses and a gift certificate to Anne Marie’s Home Boutique on Bishop’s Main Street.

Well, that is exactly what happened Saturday to Kathy Reid, 82, who has been a faithful and engaged member of Bishop Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church since she and her husband, Don, and their children moved here from Loma Linda in San Bernardino County in 1965.

“We have a Dorcas among us as well, and we want to honor her while she is with us,” said fellow congregant Summer Frazier of the church’s social committee. Frazier called Reid “a force for good.”

Reid, who is very unassuming and was totally surprised by the gesture, buried her face in her hands and cried with emotion at the piano, which she plays faithfully during Saturday (or Sabbath) service. She also does landscaping for the church and adorns the altar with flower arrangements. Other of her contributions include having worked as a teacher and principal of Bishop Adventist Christian School, which is next door to the church on Home Street, for 17 years; having taken the schoolchildren on a number of trips throughout the U.S. and overseas; and even having helped put together a stained-glass window once.

“I just love this church,” Reid said.

Some words of public praise for her included:

“We love God so much and the Sabbath because of Mom and Dad. Mom, I love you so much. Thanks for what you’ve done for your church and for your children.” – Son Mike Reid, a nurse anesthetist.

“Thank you, Kathy Reid, for your many years blessing us with your talent. Bishop SDA Church, 2023.” – Wording on the plaque presented to her.

Following the service, a potluck lunch in Reid’s honor was held at the Starlite home of fellow church members Norma and Norman Reitz. Norma Reitz has known Reid since high school.

“We all appreciate what she’s done,” she said.

“It’s such an honor to celebrate her life now instead of afterwards,” said Mike Reid, who made the four-and-a-half-hour trip up from Loma Linda, where he lives, for the occasion, as did his sister, Julie Duffie, a speech pathologist who plays the flute and accompanied her mother on a hymn.

As to whose idea it was to surprise Reid in this way, Frazier said, “I think that was God’s idea. He plants the seed in the brain.”
