Bishop, CA—Dancers, drumming, contests, pageantry and traditions are all a part of the decades old Bishop Pabanamanina Pow Wow, happening September 23-25, at the Bishop Paiute Pow Wow Arbor, near the Wanaaha Ca sino and grounds. There will be three full days of arena contests, with Arena Director Hank Johnson, and MC Ruben LittleHead, with Host Drum, Indian Hill. Helping with the Grand en tries are Head Man, Shane Thomas, and Head Woman, Aurora Toledo.

will be wearing Hats and Boots in this contest. The older women, ages 18 and older, will dance in a contest of old style vs contemporary jingle dress. In memorial of Shaylee Lynn Dondero, a Jingle Dress Healing Special will be held on Saturday, September 24, following the Grand Entry; each dancer will be recognized with a gift on behalf of the Dondero family.

The Berkshire pork prod ucts at Manor Market join other locally grown and raised animals in the Eastern Sierra and Sierra Nevada including Barb Wire Beef, the Bartletts from Hammil Valley; Dietsel Farms’ turkeys from Sonora, CA; Borda Land and Sheep from third generation sheep herding in northern Ne vada (when available, lamb), and soon, beef products from the Mont gomery Creek Ranch, in Hammil Valley, north of Bishop, off US Highway 6.

Bishop, CA--It’s fine swining time at Manor Market these days, as the family-owned and operated neighborhood store stocks its meat case with flavorful fall pork selec tions. The Talbot and Sons’ Berkshire pig, raised locally in Bishop, was expertly butch ered into pork chops, roasts, and ground pork by Josh Mappus, store butcher, and Steve Wagoner, manager of the meat department. It’s not every day the market has Berkshire pork products, and these cuts of meat are selling quickly, says Wagoner. “It’s free range, clean, good, ol’ fashioned meat,” adds Wagoner, “and the pig wasn’t raised in bulk.” There are more pig litters on the way, and Wagoner notes the pig must be raised to a certain weight before it is taken to Fallon, Nevada, to be killed and rendered ready for the trip back to Bishop.
Berkshire pigs, known for being an English breed, normally black with a bit of white on the lower legs and some on the snout, are an old breed of swine or hogs. These pigs are “prized” for the juicy and flavorful meat, and are also excellent meat producers. The meat has a high fat content, nice marbling, and is very popular for long-slow cooking or smoke houses, or very high temperature cooking, popular with Asian dishes.

Combine pork shoulder in a saucepan with one quart water and cook, moderate heat, for one hour. Drain, and reserve the broth. Get rid of the bones, and chop up the meat to fine. Blend in the cornmeal, salt, one cup of water, and two cups of the broth in a saucepan. Cook, stirring it constantly, until it’s thick. Stir in meat, onions, all the spices, and herbs. Cover and simmer gently for one hour over a very low heat. Then, pour the mixture into a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan and chill until firm. Cut into slices about ½ to ¾ inch thick, dust it lightly with flour, and fry in a small bit of shortening or oil over a moderate heat until crisp on both sides. Serve at once. In the Midwest, they eat scrapple with scrambled eggs for breakfast, or as a meat loaf dish, served with vegetables, minus the rice or potatoes, since the scrapple has a high grain content.

This would launch his love for the lumber and building industry. He leaves behind his successful business, Automated Structures, as his legacy. He had a strong devotion to his employees and considered them part of his family.
Mark is preceded in death by his son, Wyatt Todd Watts in 2017, and his father, Gar Albert Watts. He is survived by his wife Julie, of 29 years, daugh ters Autumn Ann, and Katie Brook. His mother , Bonnie Watts of Big Pine, brother, Mike Watts and his children, Kimberly and Mikey. His sister, Missie Watts-Weed and her children, Ashton, Gar, and Tadd, of Yreka, California.

Betty Jane Allen, 97, of Bishop, CA, passed away on September 8, 2022 in her home. Bet ty was born in Pasadena, Ca and met Clan cy Allen in Southern California where she moved to Sky Valley and lived there for 30+ years before relocating to Bishop.
