During the last week of April, Weber State University will be holding a general commencement for all students graduating, along with separate convocation ceremonies for the individual colleges on campus. Tassels are available for pick up at the WSU bookstore or when graduates pick up their cap and gown from Grad Finale at the Dee Events Center on April 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The different colors of tassels represent each college, and there are tassel options available for different groups on campus — for example, the LGBTQ+ community and Veterans. Tassels representing the WSU Davis Campus will also be available to graduates.

WSU’s graduation ceremonies will span two days. The first day will be held on April 26, and the second group of graduations on April 27.

The convocations being held on April 26 include the Jerry & Vickie Moyes College of Education, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Dee Events Center; College of Science from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Browning Center; Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies from noon to 1 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Building; Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Dee Events Center; and Dr. Ezekiel R. Dumke College of

Health Professions from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.

The General Commencement for all graduates will also be held on April 26 from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.

This year’s commencement ceremony will feature Emmy-nominated actor and comedian Rainn Wilson, best known as Dwight Schrute on American sitcom “The Office,” as the speaker.

The second day of graduation, April 27, will include a breakfast for honor students from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m at the Marquardt Field House.

Convocations for the day will start with General Studies from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Dee Events Center; ROTC Commissioning will take place from 9 to10 a.m. in the Shepherd Union Building; College of Social & Behavioral Sciences from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dee Events Center; John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Dee Events Center; and the College of Engineering, Applied Sciences & Technology from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.

Seating for the commencement ceremony is first-come, first-served for the general public; for graduating students free tickets will be available at Grad Finale in the ticket office at the Dee Events Center or on the weber.evenue.net website. Graduates are also encouraged to wear their caps and gowns in the seating area at the commencement ceremony.

THE FUTURE OF COMMENCEMENT AT WSU

Weber State University shocked students and staff when the university announced this year’s graduation commencement speaker would be Emmy-nominated actor and comedian Rainn Wilson. With this announcement came another: WSU will continue to have higher-profile speakers for future commencements.

As WSU continues to push community-focused initiatives, graduation has made its way to the list of university events that can be enjoyed within the university, as well as in the

community that Weber is a big part of.

“Weber State and Northern Utah, our histories are really entwined and we’ve established ourselves as an enduring presence in the community,” Bryan Magaña, public relations director for the university, said. “So especially on the biggest day of the year, we want the community to be a part of that.”

The university has a few different reasons behind this push for a more community-inclusive graduation, including attendance of graduation from community members

“A lot of universities, including Weber State, have seen a drop in attendance at commencement. The folks who do tend to come,

they enjoy the formal and ceremonial aspects of it,” Magaña said. “But this year, we wanted to make it a little more celebratory, where graduates can really come together and celebrate their achievements with each other, and now with members of their local community.”

Another reason for the community-focused push is to get eyes and ears on the university. Those who may not be involved in or aware of the university may get the chance to learn more about it through this extra incentive to come to graduation.

“Something I’m really excited about is maybe there’s a younger brother or a sister or a spouse or a friend who’s in that audience,

who maybe would not have come before, and now they’re thinking, ‘Hey, maybe I could do this too. Maybe I could consider Weber State,’” Magaña said. “And, for me, that’s really exciting is just getting more eyes on those graduates, more eyes on Weber State and potentially opening up more possibilities for people in terms of their academic dreams.”

Graduation at any institution is a big deal for graduating students, and with much of WSU being made up of non-traditional or remote students, commencement has lost some of its sparkle within the community and WSU is determined to get that back.

“We want to get more eyes on our gradu-

ates,” Magaña said. “Commencement really is absolutely all about our graduates and their achievements. They’re the stars. They’re the focus. Bringing in eyes on those graduates and more eyes on Weber State just creates an even bigger celebration.”

The inaugural speaker for this initiative is actor and comedian Rainn Wilson, best known for his role as Dwight Schrute on the American sitcom “The Office.” Wilson’s speech will take place on April 26 in the Dee Events Center from 7 to 8:30 p.m. during WSU’s General Commencement.

“We see his quotes all over social media, all over the internet, but what people may

not know about him is that, besides being an acclaimed actor, he’s a producer, he’s a director, he’s an author, a podcaster and he also is someone who holds a master’s degree,” Magaña said. “I think a lot of people might be surprised about that. He can really speak to the value of higher education, and the opportunities that it offers. And this is a message of course, we’re always trying to get across in general, but especially at graduation.”

Though commencement is focused on the graduates, anyone within WSU’s community is invited to join the graduates at commencement. There is no cost to tickets or limited entry, though seating is first come, first serve.

“We’ve had questions on social media. I’ve heard people saying, ‘I wish I could come.’ Well, you can. It’s open to the public,” Magaña said.

As Weber State continues to push community-focused incentives like commencement speakers, a newly-announced year-round lighted “W” on the mountain and more community-based events, the goal is to create a more tight-knit connection between Weber State University and the community that surrounds it.

Though guests of graduation do not need a ticket to attend the event, graduates must pick up their ticket for their section of the

event. They can pick these up at Grad Finale on April 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dee Events Center, where they can also pick up their free cap and gown and other graduation essentials. WSU’s Davis campus will host their Grad Finale on April 10 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Stewart Center.

“I’m hoping that graduation and commencement only gets better and better every year,” Magaña said. “I think this is a stepping stone toward greater and grander commencements in the future.”

Spring semester is coming to an end, which means many Wildcats will be leaving Weber State University to pursue and achieve their professional dreams, but who says their time at the University has to end here? WSU boasts some of the best graduate programs in Utah — from Nursing to Business Administration to Computer Science.

Georgetown’s Center on Education & the Workforce declared Weber State University’s undergraduate and graduate programs as the best return on investment in Utah higher

education.

One of Weber’s most popular advanced degrees, the Master of Science in Nursing.

Fortune named it one of the best online master’s nursing programs of 2022. This program offers two leadership role specialties: Nurse Educator and Nurse Leadership and Management. These skills and certifications set students apart from the crowd in the competitive field of nursing.

“Graduate students will experience diverse and evidence-based learning opportunities from highly qualified graduate faculty, culminating in a community-based residency experience in nursing clinical, academia, or administrative leadership,” the WSU website

states.

This program is completely online, allowing WSU students to achieve their highest peaks without missing out on gaining work experience.

Anne Kendrick, assistant professor at the Annie Taylor Dee School of Nursing and director of the Master of Science in Nursing Program, called attention to the growth and community impact Weber State students are able to have after earning their advanced degrees.

“It’s great to be able to see people continue to grow and develop in their profession and make such an impact in the community,” Kendrick said.

WSU’s MSN program is a pathway for these hard-working students to achieve career advancement and potential increases in pay in the competitive industry of nursing.

“It will definitely open doors, it will give them opportunities to progress within organizations, which will definitely increase pay,” Kendrick said.

A boost in education is only one benefit of having a master’s degree. According to CNBC, having a master’s degree could increase starting salaries by 44% in the field of nursing, 32% in computer science, 51% in the field of business administration and 37% in the field of social work.

Heidi Shaw always knew that she would attend Weber State University, so it was no surprise to her when she found herself on campus in 1988.

“When I was a senior in high school, the Weber State cheerleaders came to Bonneville High, where I went to school,” Shaw said. “They did this whole big thing, trying to recruit people to try out for their cheer team, and I’m like, ‘That sounds cool.’ So, I tried out and made it.”

Shaw spent four months attending the university as a cheerleader, during which time she met her husband.

“I had a class every Tuesday and Thursday in the Social Science Building. I would walk

from Lindquist Hall up to the Lind Lecture Hall,” Shaw said. “My husband was coming from Lind Lecture Hall down to Lindquist Hall, the opposite way. We would pass each other every Tuesday and Thursday. I just noticed him and thought, ‘There’s something about him that is super cool.’”

Shaw’s twin sister set the two up on a date, and they eventually married. Shaw recalled that their very first conversation was in front of the David O. McKay Library in the Weber State Institute of Religion. The Institute and the Shepherd Union Building became the pair’s favorite places to spend time with each other and friends on campus.

“I loved it up here. It was really social,” Shaw said. “I had all the friends that I made on the cheer team, which led to meeting other people, and I loved the classes.”

Four months after her marriage, Shaw became pregnant, and dropped her classes to pursue other priorities.

After 23 years away from school and the death of her husband, Shaw returned to school and received her Bachelor’s in Science in Family Studies with a minor in University Studies through Brigham Young University-Idaho online.

Two months after the death of her husband a friend approached her and asked her a question.

“He asked, ‘Have you ever thought about teaching seminary?’ And I’m like, ‘No’,” Shaw said. “He said, ‘Because maybe you should’ When he asked me that question, it just felt right, and I just knew.”

Shaw went through a training program and was first hired as a seminary instructor at Bon-

neville High School. This is her first year back at Weber State University.

“Being up here on campus now, I feel like I’m coming back home,” Shaw said.

Shaw expressed her love for the community and for the students that she works with, and offered some parting advice to current college students.

“This time of life for your age is foundational. You’re setting up the rest of your life. You’re laying the foundation of your careers. You’re going to maybe meet your spouse, and determine your belief system,” said Shaw. “Take it seriously, but have fun doing it. Have fun, date, be social, talk to people, but at the same time, realize that you’re in the decade of decisions.”

Graduation is right around the corner and one of the most important parts of planning a party is the food. To help out with your celebratory plans, here are five of the best places to eat in Ogden after graduation.

First up, the Union Grill, located on 24th Street, has something for everyone. The menu has a variety of options, including vegetarian dishes.

“It’s just a great place to grab food. The service was top-notch,” Shane Chase, a regular customer, said.

With a welcoming atmosphere, good service and outdoor seating, the Union Grill is a great spot for a post-graduation meal with

friends and family.

Another popular local spot is the Sonora Grill, a Mexican restaurant on Kiesel Avenue. The brick walls and exposed beams create a warm, friendly atmosphere, as do the restaurant staff. Though the menu is pretty standard for any Mexican restaurant, customers practically sing their praises to the flavors.

Bailey Butler recently visited Sonora Grill to celebrate with family and friends.

“The food was absolutely delicious, and our server was so kind and went above and beyond,” Butler said.

If you happen to be looking for something a little more laid back, The Pie Pizzeria, located on Harrison Boulevard, is definitely the way to go. There is plenty of seating, including an outdoor patio area for those warmer weather

days.

The Pie offers a variety of pizzas, pastas, salads and desserts, including gluten-free and vegan options. If none of the specialty pizzas happen to catch your eye, try the Build-YourOwn to make your own custom pizza.

Not only does The Pie have great food, but customer Jesse Leubner also pointed out the hardworking staff members.

“Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful,” Leubner said.

For those who enjoy a more traditional Italian feeling, Stellas is the perfect place to grab some grub after graduation. Down on 25th Street, Stellas is a bit more expensive, but its charming atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food make the prices worth it. Stellas offers a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches,

as well as pizzas and pastas.

“Stellas is outstanding. Every time I visit this restaurant, the service is wonderful and the food is so delicious,” Dylan Mathews, a regular at Stellas, said.

Overall, Stellas is one of the highest-rated restaurants in Ogden.

Finally, the Golden Jade Restaurant on Harrison Boulevard is a great choice for any fan of Chinese food. Though the restaurant itself could be described as quaint or unassuming, the staff members are friendly and service is quick, not to mention the delicious food.

Offering a variety of traditional Chinese dishes, including vegetarian options, Golden Jade was described as “the best Chinese food in Utah,” by customer Cory Anderson.

Weber State University created excitement on its social media channels on March 22 by announcing that Rainn Wilson will be giving the 2024 commencement address.

Wilson, known for portraying Dwight Schrute in “The Office,” will speak at the Dee Events Center on April 26 at 7 p.m.

The university began teasing the idea of someone special at commencement the week leading up to the announcement, posting hints on their Instagram story.

These hints stated that the speaker once compared themselves to a mongoose, panther and snake. The snake story included that the guest was not Taylor Swift, despite guesses that it could represent the singer’s “Reputation” era.

Jessica Kokesh, social media writer and edi-

tor for the university, said some of the guesses they received were Kevin Durant and Nathan Lane.

“The mongoose looked a bit too much like Timon from ‘The Lion King’, alas,” Kokesh said in an email, referring to Lane’s voice acting performance as that film’s meerkat character.

On the day of the announcement, the university posted a quote from “The Office”: “I am fast. To give you a reference point, I’m somewhere between a snake and a mongoose. And a panther.”

Heather Cimino, assistant director for student involvement and leadership, said this has been in the works for a while. The department first started out with a list of a few different people students, faculty and staff were interested in inviting, and Wilson was ultimately selected from this list.

Community members are welcome to the

event, with graduates, faculty and staff getting priority, the university said in a press release. Because of this, families are encouraged to arrive early.

In the release, WSU President Brad Mortensen said he is hoping this commencement will start a tradition in which the ceremony becomes an event not just for students but also the community.

During the event, Weber State will be awarding Wilson an honorary degree.

The press release also emphasized that autographs and meet and greets will not be held at the event. Those who’d like to see the Assistant to the Regional Manager should come prepared just to listen.

Weber State University’s Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán chapter brings the 2024 Celebración de Mariposas to campus. This graduation event will be held on Saturday, April 20 from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Austad Theater and is open to everyone.

Celebración de Mariposas is a student-run ceremony that celebrates the Hispanic and Latino cultures and achievements of the students graduating. This gives students the opportunity to honor and acknowledge the friends and family that have helped them along the way. There are also a variety of performances to celebrate Hispanic and Latino culture along with the graduation ceremony.

Pamela Nuñez is the current president of Celebración de Mariposas. Nuñez is a junior majoring in psychology with a minor in family studies. This is her first year as president.

Nuñez explains that navigating this new role has been fun and challenging, but bringing the community together around this event is something she is proud of.

“The way that we celebrate our culture is through performances. We have the celebration both presented in English and Spanish,” Nuñez said.

At Celebración de Mariposas, awards will be given out to advisors and mentors who have helped students on their way to graduation. During the ceremony students are given a moment to thank whoever they would like to in the crowd for their support.

This year Celebración de Mariposas will feature performances from a variety of dancers from different cultures as well as a mariachi band.

“We also have live transmission,” Nuñez said. “With the Latino and Hispanic community, it is very common for people to have family out of state or out of country that want

to celebrate with them but can’t. It is another way for them to be a part of the community.”

Nuñez feels that a student-run ceremony like this is an important way to build community.

“It helps people feel represented and like they are not alone. There are people who care about their well-being and their achievements,” Nuñez said.

The first Celebración de Mariposas was held at Weber State in 2019. At the time the event was known as “The Latinx Graduation Ceremony” but this year the ceremony has been rebranded as Celebración de Mariposas. The event was first started by students who were a part of Weber State’s MEChA chapter with the help of their Presidential Advisor Juancarlos Santisteban.

“It started off as a very small event…but last year was our largest number of students participating with around 120 students,” Nuñez said.

For the future of Celebración de Mariposas, Nuñez would like to continue to grow the attendance of the celebration, but also explore more social events and activities. Nuñez suggests an activity where students can get together to decorate and customize their graduation caps.

“We are excited to recognize all of the hard work that students have put into this event and give thanks to our advisors who have mentored us along the way,” Nuñez said.

April 12 is the priority deadline for students wanting to be a part of this year’s Celebración de Mariposas graduation ceremony.

The Final Four of the 2024 Men’s March Madness tournament is set with a diverse mix of teams with compelling storylines and distinct paths to the pinnacle of college basketball. Let’s dive deeper into the narratives of University of Connecticut, Purdue University, University of Alabama and North Carolina State University, and what defined their journey to the Final Four in Arizona.

UConn Vs Alabama

UConn, the defending national champions, arrived at the Final Four with an aura of invincibility. Their dominance on both ends of the floor was evident throughout the tournament, with an average winning margin of 27.5 points per game in their first four games.

Led by coach Dan Hurley and propelled by NBA-level talent like Tristen Newton and Donovan Clingan, the Huskies displayed stifling defense and relentless offense. Their ability to maintain focus and intensity in every possession, combined with a winning culture, makes them formidable opponents.

Alabama, making their first-ever Final Four appearance, showcased explosive firepower throughout the tournament. Coach Nate Oats’ squad led the nation in scoring, utilizing a high-octane offense to overwhelm opponents.

Mark Sears and Grant Nelson emerged as key contributors, complementing Alabama’s offensive juggernaut. Despite occasional defensive lapses, Alabama’s offensive dominance proved too much for their earlier tournament opponents. Oats’ emphasis on improving defensive intensity paid dividends, solidifying Alabama’s

status as a legitimate contender.

Purdue Vs NC State Purdue, after a 44-year wait, finally returned to the Final Four. Coach Matt Painter’s team showcased resilience and growth since their last March disappointment. Reflecting on past mistakes, Purdue made subtle adjustments to their game, emphasizing skill and depth.

With Zach Edey anchoring their inside presence, Purdue posed a unique challenge to opponents, drawing fouls and dominating the paint. Their ability to impose their will and adapt to different matchups propelled them to the brink of redemption.

NC State, the underdog with a miracle run, defied the odds to reach the Final Four. Coach Kevin Keatts’ team faced adversity earlier in the season, but they found their stride at the perfect time. Led by DJ Burns

Jr, DJ Horne and a stout defense, NC State pulled off upsets against Texas Tech, Oakland, Marquette and Duke, showcasing their resilience and determination. Their belief in themselves, coupled with a relentless defensive mindset, propelled NC State to unprecedented heights.

As these four teams converge in Arizona, each with their own narrative and aspirations, they epitomize the essence of March Madness. Despite varied pedigrees and playing styles, they share a common trait: a refusal to accept defeat.

In a tournament defined by unpredictability and drama, UConn, Purdue, Alabama, and NC State have captivated fans with their extraordinary journeys. As they prepare to battle for college basketball’s ultimate prize, one thing is certain: Anything can happen in March.

UConn Vs Iowa

As the anticipation builds for the upcoming Final Four showdown between Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes and Paige Bueckers’ University of Connecticut Huskies, the spotlight intensifies on these two accomplished athletes. Their journey from facing off as freshmen to becoming pivotal figures in women’s college basketball has been nothing short of remarkable.

Since that fateful Sweet 16 encounter in 2021, both Clark and Bueckers have carved out distinct paths marked by resilience, perseverance and unmatched talent. While Bueckers faced setbacks due to injuries, Clark’s ascension to stardom seemed unstoppable as she has propelled Iowa to new heights.

For Bueckers, the road to redemption has been paved with challenges. Despite enduring injuries that sidelined her for signif-

icant portions of the past two seasons, she emerged stronger and more determined.

Anchoring a depleted Huskies squad, she showcased her versatility, shifting positions and elevating her defensive game while maintaining her offensive efficiency.

Clark, on the other hand, has been rewriting the record books with her breathtaking performances and clutch plays. From breaking scoring records to leading Iowa to its first Final Four in three decades, her impact on the game has been mesmerizing.

Yet, amidst the accolades and attention, Clark remains grounded, driven by a singular focus: winning. But beyond the individual accolades and the tantalizing matchup, there’s a deeper narrative at play — a quest for championship glory.

As the countdown to tip-off begins, the excitement reaches a fever pitch. Fans brace themselves for an epic showdown between two of the brightest stars in women’s college basketball history. For Clark and Bueckers, this moment represents the culmination of

years of dedication, sacrifice, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

In the end, whether it’s Iowa or UConn that emerges victorious, one thing is certain: Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers have already left an indelible mark on the sport, and their legacy will endure long after the final buzzer sounds.

NC State Vs South Carolina

As the anticipation for the women’s Final Four reaches a fever pitch, the spotlight shines brightly on the showdown between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the North Carolina State Wolfpack. With both teams vying for a spot in the championship game, the stage is set for a clash of titans that promises to deliver high-stakes drama and electrifying basketball action.

South Carolina enters the contest as the nation’s only undefeated team, boasting a formidable lineup anchored by the dominant presence of 6-foot-7 center Kamilla Cardoso. However, the Wolfpack’s journey to the Final Four has been marked by resilience and determination, defying expectations to secure their first appearance in the national semifinals since 1998.

Despite South Carolina’s status as significant favorites, experts suggest that NC State possesses the tools to mount a formidable challenge. Led by standout guard Aziaha James, who has emerged as a bona fide superstar during the tournament, the Wolfpack bring a potent mix of offensive firepower and defensive tenacity to the court.

In a game that may hinge on the battle in the paint, the matchup between South Carolina’s imposing frontcourt and NC State’s agile guards is poised to be a key determining factor. While Cardoso anchors the Gamecocks’ interior defense, NC State’s guard trio poses a formidable threat, capable of stretching the floor and creating scoring opportunities in transition.

The depth and versatility of both teams add another layer of intrigue to the matchup, with South Carolina’s bench averaging nearly 34 points per game and NC State’s backcourt showcasing dynamic playmaking

abilities.

Ultimately, the outcome of the game may hinge on which team can impose its will and execute its game plan with precision. While South Carolina’s undefeated record and formidable lineup make them the favorites, NC State’s resilience and determination suggest that they are more than capable of pulling off an upset.

As the Final Four showdown unfolds, basketball enthusiasts around the world will be treated to a display of skill, passion and intensity as two powerhouse programs battle for a chance to etch their names in the annals of NCAA tournament history.

Syracuse Orange guard Dyaisha Fair (2) against the Arizona Wildcats at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion during the first round of the NCAA tournament at the University of Connecticut.

I won’t go into the details of when I first started at Weber State University, but I had long graduated from high school when I started. I had begun to create a career as an esthetician, dabbled in fashion modeling, a retired sports photographer and even a social media influencer in China.

I decided to come back to Utah in hopes of a slower life. That decision wasn’t an easy one, but something I always felt like was missing in my life.

I kept this decision quiet, revealing it to no one initially, fearing it might vanish if spoken aloud.

As the semesters went on, I grew a confidence that wasn’t based on my physical self

but on my capabilities and drive for knowledge.

This new confidence allowed me opportunities for an amazing internship, to study abroad and to create lasting friendships.

And as it comes time to graduate, I’m so grateful I made this decision.

While graduation typically signifies a celebration, a significant milestone, it also marks the passage of time, a testament to our growth and wisdom.

Looking back on my time at Weber State, I realize my journey may have differed from others’. It took me five years to reach this point, and they’ve been some of the most deliberate and introspective yet slow years of my life.

And to those reading, I’ll leave you with this: Never let yourself get in the way of your potential.

The Signpost editor, Adam Montgomery, sitting on a bench at the Chicago Institute of Art. MELANIE KILBURN

If 18-year-old Breanna could see where current, 23-year-old Breanna is, she would probably have a heart attack. The past four and a half years have been a crazy whirlwind of changes and experiences that have molded me into the person I am today.

A huge part of my college experience has been The Signpost. I started here at Weber State University in the fall of 2019, but I didn’t join the staff of The Signpost until the spring of 2020. I had no idea the amount of time or energy or effort or love I would put into the paper.

I came to Weber State as a very shy, anxious person who didn’t really know who she was exactly. High school was a pretty tumultuous time for me, as I think it is for everyone. I am a queer woman who has lived in Utah her whole life and was not raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, so I often felt very isolated and alone as a lot of my peers at the time were not like me. It was hard for me to find my place, so when I finally graduated high school I felt free and felt as if college would give me a clean slate to work on and create the life I wanted.

My first semester was weird because general classes felt like high school part two, but I was pleasantly surprised that my peers were people who actually wanted to be here and learn. It felt different.

I didn’t join The Signpost until my second semester here. My uncle on my dad’s side of the family was the editor-in-chief for The Signpost once upon a time, and working for the student newspaper seemed like something that could be cool. After meeting and talking to this random dude (who is now one of my best friends) in a rock climbing class who also happened to work on staff, I was convinced to apply.

I have always wanted to learn how to edit other people’s work, so I applied for the copy desk. I had no prior knowledge of AP Style or anything, but I got the job.

I was super excited, but also very apprehensive because what if I wasn’t good?

Turns out, I was pretty damn good. I’ve been here for the past four years and it’s been one of the best things I could have ever done for myself. I have grown so much and have learned even more. It’s been a long, crazy, transformative journey. Starting at the paper I just wanted to stay as a copy editor so I didn’t have to put myself out there or make the tough decisions a leader is often expected to make. However, the Gods of The Signpost (Jean Norman and previous editors-in-chief) had other plans.

I quickly moved up through the ranks from copy editor to assistant (to the) copy chief, copy chief and then editor-in-chief. My year as editor-in-chief was challenging, and honestly one of the hardest years of my college career, but it was so rewarding and I grew to love The Signpost even more than I did before.

I am so thankful for everything I have been able to learn and experience here at Weber State. I could write forever about all the stories I have and all the friends I’ve made, but I was told I couldn’t take up every page in this issue, so I’m going to keep it short.

I have loved working with The Signpost. I can honestly say that it has changed my world and my life. I am no longer that shy, anxious, insecure 18-year-old girl, I am confident and not afraid to be loud or to be who I authentically am.

I have loved everything about my college experience and every single person who has come into my life. I am also extremely thankful to the people who are no longer in my life, because they also played a huge role in making me who I am today.

Needless to say, I am so happy and grateful and proud of me and all my accomplishments. I have done things that I never thought I would.

I just want to say thank you to Weber State and The Signpost and all my friends and family. You will forever be in my heart and in my mind. I love you all.

SARA STAKER | The Signpost Breanna Hart former editor-in-chief and copy chief of The Signpost.

Dear Weber State,

When we first met it was the fall semester of 2017. I was a freshman, just graduated from high school and a completely different person than I am now.

That first semester at Weber State University, I didn’t take my education too seriously. I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have an education like this at my fingertips, and to be completely honest, I failed two of the four classes I was taking at that time. The other two classes I barely passed.

I decided not to go back to WSU for the following spring semester in 2018. Instead, I finished up my math credits at Davis Technical College.

I would not see the walls of Weber State until about two-and-a-half years later, after I got my math credits out of the way and the pandemic had happened. The pandemic forced me to take my first semester back at WSU online in spring 2021.

Leading up to the end of that semester, I was preparing to meet with my academic adviser to get my next semester set up at WSU, when I met The Signpost adviser Jean Norman. Norman was able to help me get set up in the right direction to study my chosen concentration, multimedia journalism. Little did I know how much this one meeting would change my life.

During the summer 2021 semester, I took Norman’s media writing class. It was my first taste of journalism at Weber State. I was obsessed with it.

At the end of that summer I got my first look at The Signpost, Weber State University’s student-run newspaper.

I still remember the feeling when I walked into that room. It was a warm summer day and I was there to meet with the photography editor so she could show me how to upload and edit the photos I took for The Signpost.

After the editor left the room, I took a look around and just knew that was where I was supposed to be. I called my family and told them all about the newsroom, what it looked like and how excited I was to be there.

Little did I know I would spend most of my time at college in that newsroom producing the paper either through photo editing or staying late for paper production.

I remember Norman telling the photographers in the fall that an assistant photo editor position was open and that The Signpost would need a photo editor after my editor graduated. I honestly didn’t think I could do it and I definitely didn’t think I would ever become an assistant editor at the paper, nonetheless an editor. But it happened.

In the spring of 2022 I became the assistant photo editor and in the summer of 2022, I was made the photo editor for The Signpost. Getting that assistant editor position and then the editor position made me feel needed and so happy.

I learned what it was like to be a journalist and I was able to practice what I loved most, photography.

ends I work as a Digital Content Producer for KSL NewsRadio. If someone told me years ago that this would happen, I would have thought they were insane.

During my time at Weber State, I’ve had the opportunity to meet people like Lynsey Addario, a renowned conflict photojournalist who video-chatted with students while she was covering the early days of the war in Ukraine.

I also got to do something I never thought I’d do at Weber State: I got to study abroad in Finland over the summer of 2023. That was an amazing experience I will never forget! It was exciting to study outside of the walls of Weber State and get to travel.

Along with that, I got to experience many events and meet new people through The Signpost. My favorite event to cover every year was Día de los Muertos. I loved taking photos of this beautiful tradition and watching movies based on the holiday while editing those photos.

I was able to learn from so many amazing professors and students, and each one will always have a special place in my heart.

One thing I learned from my college experience is that you can do whatever you put your mind to. What’s stopping you from reaching your goals? Absolutely nothing.

Don’t let anyone tell you what you can do or let anything stop you, because you are worth it and you can do anything. Change your world and change your life.

The Signpost editors and staff were so fun to work with. The whole experience was completely life-changing. This was where I found my place, and believe me when I say, it became my home.

I saw the editors and staff more than I did my own family. It’s hard not to become close and make people like that your family in some way when you see them 24/7.

I ended up doing better in school by this point as well. I had promised myself that I would do better, get better grades and make sure by the time I got my bachelor’s degree that I would have succeeded in different areas at Weber State.

Fast forward to today, on weekdays I am the editor-in-chief at The Signpost, and on week-

There were many days when I had to put my family aside to get homework done or do that extra credit assignment to reach my goals. That was hard. I was lucky to have a family that understood why a college education was so important to me and they only helped to push me to achieve my goals in life.

After the summer of 2022 I added onto that family by marrying my amazing husband who is so understanding and makes my life easier in many ways. His family helped me as well, pushing me to achieve my goals and celebrating every milestone along the way.

Now, at the end of the 2024 spring semester, I am sad to say goodbye to Weber State. I’ve made so many memories here that I will never forget. The only thing I can do now is let every last minute of my time here sink in.

It’s been good knowing you, Weber State University, thank you for the memories.

Love, Kennedy Camarena

I grew up hearing that mother birds push their babies out of the nest. I learned that the baby birds needed the shove to let their flying instincts kick in. Even though it’s done out of love, that always struck me as cruel. I feel like I’m being thrust out of the safe nest of my formal education as I near graduation.

For so long I’ve been neatly labeled as a student. And I respect the title. I keep the name tag straight.

But I won’t lie. The name tag is heavy, and I’m longing to fly. I just don’t feel quite ready.

When I was in junior high school, my older sister taught me how to play hard to get. “Keep the power,” she said. “The person who cares less in a relationship is in control.”

Growing up with five older sisters, I was always receiving some sort of education outside of the classroom.

I haven’t just learned from others though. In my 23 years of life, I’ve learned lessons by myself too. Like, playing hard to get doesn’t always give you the power. Or more importantly the importance of kindness and giving grace.

I started my college journey in Ephraim at Snow College. In an English class, taught by a man named English (really), I learned about creative nonfiction. I was mesmerized by the honest accounts that showed the complex beauty of the world.

I thought I was committed to fiction, but true stories had caught my heart. The simple 1010 composition course, taught outside under crabapple trees, started the affair of a lifetime.

When I graduated from Snow, I switched my major to Communication so I could study journalism while I attended Weber State University. I wanted more chances to see, hear and then share true stories. I have found that truth testifies of magic more than fantasy ever could.

Individuals I interview for stories always seem to teach me something. They widen some edge of my brain or flood some basin of my heart.

On an assignment to write about updates to the Ada Lindquist Plaza and Pond (say that

ten times fast) I met Norm Tarbox, senior vice president of Administrative Services at WSU. He is also a Snow College alumnus who went on to study journalism. He was kind enough to share some of his own stories with me.

I eagerly learned from them — lessons from footsteps taken in the same place I would later walk.

While I’m standing on the edge of formal education’s nest, I’m not flying away from learning. There’s a world of joys, heartaches and wisdom I need to discover.

And of course, higher educational nests… and loans…are open to me.

As I look back at my days that turned into years, then even decades, I’m grateful for all the lessons and teachers I’ve had — in and out of classroom walls. And I’m so eager to meet the rest.

I have had many opportunities through my time here at Weber State University and in life. I have learned valuable skills and lessons that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. One of these lessons is balancing school and life.

I am a hard worker and will always produce work to the best of my ability. For some reason, I like to challenge myself and see how much I can really do and take on.

I have taken 18 credit hours since I started college. This semester was the first time I took less (not by much though, only 15). I learned how to juggle 12-15 assignments a week to stay on top of all my classes, my two jobs and life.

Teaching preschool and coaching gymnas-

tics are both insane and chaotic, but I love it. These kids are hilarious and will always brighten my day, even when it’s hard. They have taught me patience and allowed me to be me.

I work for The Signpost (obviously). I started as a reporter for the culture desk and now am the co-editor for the desk. It definitely had its ups and downs, but the lessons I learned in that office are some I will take with me throughout life.

I have taken some opportunities that many didn’t see me taking. I was on Weber State’s Model UN team, where we went to San Francisco and Germany to compete in national conferences. We won various awards on our paperwork and the delegation as a whole.

I am not a politician, but it showed me how to navigate within a political arena and showed me how the international communi-

ty works. It also helped me build confidence in myself because it was so out of my comfort zone.

My internship was in the Marche region in Italy. There I was able to learn what it takes to be a travel journalist. I learned what it would take to be out on my own as a journalist. I got to experience and see new perspectives on life and learn how to navigate in a new country. I met so many amazing people who taught me a lot and have become good friends.

It’s a lot on someone’s plate. There were times when I thought, “You know what, I really have reached my limit.” But I pulled through. By the end of it, I thought it was a piece of cake and somehow managed to add a little more.

All this said it’s a lot for some people. It worked for me, but I didn’t have a life outside of all of this. If I wasn’t at work, I was at school.

If I wasn’t at school, I was at work. I burnt out for sure at least twice and there were a couple other times when I probably did, I just didn’t admit it. There were times when I definitely should’ve taken a step back, but I didn’t.

I am extremely blessed to have been able to do all of these things. The lessons and skills I have taken away from these experiences will only help me in my life, but I wish I had more time for life outside of school.

If I could do it all over again (I won’t), I would give myself some room to breathe and live. That is the main lesson I’m taking away from my time at WSU. I will still be hardworking and always put my best work forward, but I’m also going to give myself room to have a life and live outside of work.

Graduating students need a ticket for graduate area seating on the arena floor during commencement. Students should wear their cap and gown to sit in this area. Graduating students can easily pick up their ticket at the ticket office at the Dee Events Center during Grad Finale, or online at weber.evenue.net

Faculty and staff can also obtain tickets for special seating for commencement. While tickets are not required, they are highly encouraged to make sure we have enough seats available. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend and wear regalia. Get a free ticket at weber.evenue.net.

There will be indoor pyrotechnics at this event.

No tickets are required. General admission seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, while space is available. Families of graduates are encouraged to arrive early. General public space is also open to Weber State graduates, faculty and staff without regalia.
