With Independence Day firework celebrations around the corner, it is important to be safe and cautious with fireworks this season, especially as Utah’s weather starts to get warmer.
One way to prevent fires, whether it be local or in a forest, is by being aware of Utah’s fire restrictions. Examples of this include only having campfires in areas that are regulated for this activity and avoiding welding or cutting metal in areas of dry vegetation.
When it comes to fireworks, safety precautions must be considered to prevent local fires. It is also important to be aware of what fireworks can be used within legal limits in Utah. Kevin Brown, the Fire Marshal for the Ogden City Fire Department, explained how to be safe when it comes to the use of fireworks.
“Have a bucket of water nearby, and once you are done with the firework, put it in the bucket of water; let it soak,” Brown said. “Don’t leave the fireworks unattended once it is done.”
Brown said that where the firework might land needs to be considered, as this is a great way to prevent a fire from starting.
“Make sure that the firework isn’t going to land on someone’s property, roof, yard or trees,” Brown said.
Brown states that when it comes to putting out a fire caused by a firework, a water hose or fire extinguisher can always be used if the fire is small enough. Fire spreads quickly and calling 911 is always an option
when it comes to putting out a fire.
“Be safe with fireworks,” Brown said. “You can be held liable if you start a fire negligently with fireworks,” Brown said.
Fireworks are not the only thing to be mindful of this time of year. As the temperature gets hotter in the coming July and August months, fires can start more easily due to the dry nature of Utah.
“The converters on cars can get hot enough to start a fire in grass,” Brown said. “You don’t really want to be driving
through grass that is brushing under your vehicle. This applies to four-wheelers and motorcycles too.”
Brown said spark arrestors are one way to prevent a vehicle from starting a fire. A spark arrestor can contain or dispose of hot exhaust particles that are generated by the internal engine on a vehicle.
However, it is important to note that moisture levels in Utah have gone up since the previous years.
“Fires are always a huge concern this
time of year, but it is not as dry as normal this year,” Brown said. “Basically, by this time of year our fuel moistures are really low, but because of the cool June that we had this year, there is more moisture in the air.”
Hopefully with higher moisture levels this year and taking the correct safety precautions this summer, Utah can have a fire-free season.

The now-22-year long ongoing tradition of Farmers Market Ogden has once again taken over the streets of Historic 25th Street for the summer.
The 2023 summer season Farmers Market began on May 27 and will be running every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m until Sept. 9.
The event begins with a free community yoga class offered weekly in the Municipal Park beginning at 9 a.m. and running until 10 a.m. The free class leads a meditation and helps guide participants to take part in a guided yoga workout for a relaxing beginning to the weekend event.
Afterward, people are able to stroll freely through Historic 25th Street to enjoy many different local musicians that take the stage, as well as the sidewalks and alleyways along 25th Street throughout the event, all while shopping from the many local vendors selling products such as handmade baskets, woven clothing, a variety of produce and plenty of delicious, freshly-baked treats available for purchase.
Something else people may notice while attending the ongoing summer Farmers Market is a sign taped to many vendors’ booths around the market, which encourages shoppers to donate spare change to the vendors participating in the program.
The money donated can go toward purchasing fresh produce options for others in the community who are not able to afford this option, while still supporting these small businesses.
Farmers Market Ogden has always been a staple in the Ogden community. The event allows people to come out and support not only the small businesses and the local musical talents, but it also helps bring together the residents of Ogden and build that sense of community with one another.

turned to their respective teams, with both Green and Irving scoring contracts over $100 million.
Irving returned to the Dallas Mavericks after being traded there earlier this year, continuing the backcourt duo of Irving and Luka Dončić. The Mavericks should be looking for a starting center and some defensive wings who can help them on the defensive end of the floor. They signed guards like Dante Exum and Seth Curry but still need to fill out their roster.
Green is returning to the Golden State Warriors, an organization where he won four championships, continuing his relationship with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Notable pickups were Gabe Vincent, Taurean Prince, Jaxson Hayes, with them also re-signing Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and D’Angelo Russell, building their roster to compete with an aging LeBron.
The Houston Rockets made some splashes by signing unrestricted free agent Fred VanVleet and acquiring Dillon Brooks to pair with their young core. Not a championship team but notable signings. The Indiana Pacers added Bruce Brown, who was on the Denver Nuggets last year.

As the final buzzer sounded on the NBA Finals, marking the end of another exhilarating season, a different kind of excitement swept through the basketball world. Excitement for the NBA off-season, a time when teams and fans alike eagerly awaited the frenzy of NBA free agency.

The closest Lillard has gotten to winning a championship was the Western Conference Finals where he lost to the Kevin Durant Warriors. This is an opportunity for Lillard to win an NBA championship. The top teams that are looking at Lillard on the trade market are the Miami Heat, 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers. As of right now, Miami is the leading candidate to get Lillard after making the NBA finals themselves this year.
A team last year that didn’t make the finals were the Los Angeles Lakers. They lost in the Western conference to NBA champions the Denver Nuggets. When free agency hit, they stacked their team so they could get to the
The NBA off-season is a whirlwind of activity, with trades, signings and contract negotiations taking the center stage. During this part of the off season, teams redefine their identities, making bold moves that have the potential to reshape the entire league. The landscape of the NBA shifted as new alliances formed, rivalries intensified and underdogs rose to prominence.
For fans, the off-season and free agency are a roller coaster ride of emotions. These are moments of elation and disappointment, surprises and shocks.

Weber State University sits in the middle of unrivaled natural beauty, extending an open invitation to exploration, adventure and education. Recognizing this, WSU has worked to make its Outdoor Program largely successful by offering a diverse range of inclusive outdoor activities intended to foster both a love of the outdoors and a feeling of community.
Outdoor Program coordinator Hayley Prine detailed the program’s intriguing lineup of adventures, educational clinics and special events for this summer.
Thrilling overnight adventures
The multi-day adventures are among the most thrilling options, including the Snake River Rafting Trip, which runs Aug. 11-13 and the yearly Experience Weber trip on Aug. 2425.
The Snake River trip gives participants the chance to ride Wyoming’s ferocious rapids in Alpine Canyon, providing a weekend of thrilling water experiences and peaceful nights spent beneath the stars.
Experience Weber offers new students a warm welcome at the picturesque Pineview reservoir, enabling them to connect and make friendships before the fall semester starts.
Single-day escapades
You don’t need to look any further if you’re searching for an exciting day.
“We also have lots of single day opportunities: mountain bike dawn patrols, paddle boarding trips, rappel clinics and adaptive climbing programs,” Prine said.
Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a nature enthusiast, these activities are made to suit everyone’s interests.
New initiatives: Collaborations and events
The Outdoor Program is stepping it up this summer with a number of fresh projects. The culmination of the most recent partnership
with Snowbasin Resort and Pineview Reservoir was the triumphant debut of Outdoor Adventure X on June 17 and 18.
The weekend was jam-packed with practical clinics on kayaking, traditional climbing techniques and outdoor first aid treks. This collaboration demonstrated the Outdoor Program’s adaptability and dedication to a variety of outdoor activities.
The WSU Outdoor Program will additionally assist the Utah Outdoor Recreation Summit on Sept. 6 and 7. They will provide their knowledge to this event held right here at Weber State as the clinic provider.
The program is also preparing for Swell by Outspring, a novel initiative aimed at encouraging women-owned businesses in the outdoor industry, which will be another first-time event. This event, which is planned to take place from Sept. 15 to 17, aims to highlight female leadership in the outdoor recreation industry.
Additionally, the Outdoor Program is keen
to connect with various populations and has partnered with Ogden Valley Adaptive Sports and Salt Lake Area Queer Climbers to offer unique climbing activities.
Interdepartmental collaborations: Enhancing student experience
WSU’s Outdoor Program engages in more than just external collaboration.
“We will be running the second annual Beach Bash with Wildcat Scholars and First Gen Club, and custom paddling trips with WSU Housing, WSU Women’s Center and Study Abroad,” Prine said.
By fostering a feeling of community among the students through these interdepartmental partnerships, outdoor learning benefits are extended to the larger university community.
Leave No Trace: Conservation through education
True to its mission, the Outdoor Program
promotes respect for the environment and sustainability.
“At the Outdoor Program, we use and teach Leave No Trace principles in our programs,” Prine said. “We hope that our participants leave us appreciating the land we use for recreation and have a few more tools to care for it.”
Accessibility and community impact
The WSU Outdoor Program places a high priority on enhancing the student experience and fostering a feeling of community. It supports the Ogden community by making many of its events and rental items available to the general public. Despite not offering academic credit, the program has enormous value since it promotes community building, skill development and practical education.
