On June 29, affirmative action policies were overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States, sending shockwaves through educational institutions nationwide.

The Supreme Court decision struck down affirmative action policies that allowed race and ethnicity to be considered factors in college admissions.

Universities are fighting to understand the implications of this ruling in their admissions process and campus diversity.

“In Missouri, every state institution got a message that said you cannot use affirmative action for scholarships or hiring,” Leah Murray, politics professor at Weber State University, said. “They basically threw affirmative action out the window.”

WSU has an open enrollment policy, which provides accessible education to all students.

“A kid could have hated high school and not done super well on their tests, but maybe now when they are 20, they are ready to buckle down and do the work,” Murray said. Harvard would say you can’t come here, but Weber would say you can.”

WSU accepts all high school graduates regardless of their academic performance, test scores or other qualifications.

Under current affirmative action policies, WSU and all other open enrollment schools could face new challenges in maintaining their commitment to a diverse student body.

“I don’t know if this decision sets up a cascade effect that eventually affects Weber State, but that would be in the long run,” Murray said. “As far as the short-term effects go, not much changes.”

There is a fear that eliminating affirmative action may decrease the representation of underrepresented minority students and hinder efforts to rectify historical disadvan-

tages.

“Affirmative action is a policy that tries to disrupt historical expectations,” Murray said. “A good example of affirmative action on our campus at Weber State is veterans applying for a job. We acknowledge that veterans have a harder time getting employed when they

return from their service, so they will receive extra points.”

Weber State University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. According to WSU, its policy is to provide equal opportunities to every employee at the university.

Utah’s state holiday, Pioneer Day, was celebrated last Monday on July 24. While some people in the Ogden area were traveling up to the mountains in hopes to to get away from the intense heat, others decided to celebrate by attending the Ogden Pioneer Days rodeo.

The Ogden Pioneer Days rodeo is an event held every year to celebrate the day pioneers came to Utah and settled in the state. This year’s rodeo was held throughout five days, the fifth day being Pioneer Day and the most popular day to experience this particular rodeo.

The rodeo had multiple food trucks for those who wanted a drink or a meal while enjoying the rodeo, though the crowds of people didn’t really come to the event for the food; they came to see the horses and the action that came with them and their riders.

The most exciting part for many is the roughstock events. These events will oftentimes include bronc riding, where a rider will try to hold on to a rope known as a saddle bronc rein as the horse attempts to get the rider off of its back.

While rodeos may not be for everyone, if you decide to attend a rodeo for the excitement and the thrill, the food and the feelings or just to have a reason to dress up like a cowboy for a day, taking the time to attend a rodeo can be well worth your while.

BOTTOM LEFT: A rider sliding down his horse as it attempts to buck the rider off of its back. RIGHT: A horseback rider on the back of his horse riding across the Ogden Pioneer Days rodeo arena.

From the moment the first trailer was released, “Barbie” has been a highly anticipated film. If it were anything else, I would be a bit concerned that all of the hype would create something the actual film could never live up to. But I was never concerned with “Barbie.”

WOMEN’S CENTER

The film not only met my expectations, but exceeded them. Director Greta Gerwig has outdone herself in this bubbly film about America’s most well-known doll. It follows Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken as they travel from Barbieland to the real world and learn about the vast differences between the two.

As one trailer marketed the movie, “Barbie” truly is for everyone. For those who grew up playing with Barbie dolls, the film is filled with nostalgia, but those who dislike the idea of Barbie can still find great enjoyment as it pokes fun at itself quite often.

A lot is packed into its almost two hour run time, including the history of the doll and its effect on feminism. Additionally, themes of mental health, traditional gender roles and equality are considered.

Most viewers will leave with some sort of satisfaction from the movie, whether it be from the comedy, the nostalgia or thought-provoking storyline.

The casting for this movie was incredible.

Robbie encapsulates a stereotypical Barbie doll so well, it almost seems like she was made for the role. I was a little bit skeptical when first hearing about Ryan Gosling as Ken, but he went above and beyond as a Barbie-obsessed himbo.

Personally though, one of my favorite characters was Allan. Portrayed by Michael Cera, Allan represents one of Mattel’s many discontinued dolls in the movie, hence his tag line “There’s only one Allan,” on the movie posters. His awkwardness, much like most other Michael Cera characters, is endearing and in a world full of Kens, an Allan is very refreshing.

I think what I loved most about this movie is the sense of community it created. For the last week, when I’ve been near movie theaters, all I see is a wave of people dressed in varying shades of pink with huge smiles on their faces. Online, it has brought so many people together to reminisce on their childhoods.

In one current TikTok trend, women post montages of them and their friend groups

with songs from the “Barbie” soundtrack in the background to express how grateful they are for girlhood.

“Barbie” has brought expressing joy for historically “girly” things to the forefront. In my opinion, the film at its core is a celebration of femininity, of shameless joy in hot pink and dressing up and sleepovers and gossiping. Of enjoying these things without being labeled as childish or immature. It is a reminder, given at a great time, that it is so important to embrace the smaller things in life and that one does not have to give up their so-called “softness” to accomplish great things.

For this reason I feel that Greta Gerwig has created so much more than just another summer blockbuster. She has created a movie that adults can seek comfort in and children can gain strength from. I will most definitely be seeing this film again and would highly recommend going to the theater and dressing in pink for the full experience.

Margot Robbie plays the role of Barbie in the new film directed by Greta Gerwig that was released July 21.

Adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” leaves its mark as one of the most ambitious films of the decade so far.

“Oppenheimer” follows the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer during the height of World War II and his creation of the atomic bomb. While a biopic and a film of this size is new territory for filmmaking auteur Christopher Nolan, his most recent venture in filmmaking still contains some of the hallmarks in his films.

In traditional Nolan fashion, this film finds itself jumping between three separate chapters of the Oppenheimer story. The first being the story of how Oppenheimer came to create The Manhattan Project. The second part of the story revolves around a post-WWII humiliating clearance hearing, and the final chapter follows a senate hearing that determines whether or not Lewis Strauss, played by Robert Downey Jr., should be appointed a federal government role.

Nolan’s approach to this film, like many

others, creates a feeling that time isn’t always linear. Once again, we see Nolan’s obsession with men who seem to be conflicted, tormented, and riddled with anxiety. It comes as no surprise that Nolan would make a film about Oppenheimer.

It is worth noting that the characters in “Oppenheimer” are not the most likable batch of folk. This choice feels intentional in pushing forward the realism and nightmarish state of Los Alamos at the time. Oppenheimer is played hauntingly by Cillian Murphy, who creates a lead protagonist that feels like neither a hero nor villain. If anything, General Leslie Groves, portrayed by Matt Damon, is the closest thing this film has to a hero, and Lewis Strauss portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. fills up the villain role.

Murphy’s performance packs emotion despite being quiet and subdued. This is truly shown after Oppenheimer hears the news that his creation has been dropped on Hiroshima. Everything the audience needs to know about how Oppenheimer feels is portrayed through the look in Murphy’s eyes.

The editing for “Oppenheimer,” done by Jennifer Lame, who previously worked with Nolan on “Tenet,” keeps the film moving like a speeding train, and is another aspect of the film deserving praise.

For scenes comprised largely of people having conversations, the editing makes these conversations feel exciting. This also assists the film in jumping back and forth between the three main stories of “Oppenheimer.” Then, once the film finally arrives at the Trinity Test, the first trial detonation of

the atomic bomb, the editing works in such a way that the film itself feels like it’s going to explode with anxiety and tension.

The execution of the Trinity Test within this film stands a towering achievement. The sound design, cinematography and anxious feeling of the entire sequence are all truly remarkable features, but an aspect of the scene that truly stands out is the characters. Everything you need to know about the ensemble cast is presented in this scene through how the characters prepare for the bomb and how they react once it has been dropped.

“Oppenheimer” tells the tale of a man who created something very dangerous and then paid the consequences for his actions on both a societal and personal level. The film presents a look at the United States when everything felt cynical and paranoid, a nation that cared more about a possible communist invasion than the potential dangers of a weapon of this size.

The film does not show the damage done or lives taken by the dropping of the two atomic bombs. This says something about turning a blind eye and ignoring the possible repercussions of one’s actions, whether that be personal or national. The infamous line, “Now I become death, the destroyer of worlds,” is uttered by a disturbed Oppenheimer in the film. It is presented as more than just a statement J. Robert Oppenheimer said about himself 80 years ago, but also as possibly something that could still apply to the world today.

Cillian Murphy plays the lead role of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

On June 13, a boy was bitten by a rattlesnake near the trailhead on 27th Street, and general sightings in neighborhoods have been increasing. Rattlesnake season can start as early as April and lasts the warm months, usually ending around October.

If you spot a rattlesnake, be conscious of its space and leave it alone. If it is on campus, contact facility management at (801) 626-6331.

If it is off campus, call the Ogden non-emergency line at (801) 395-8221.

Weston Woodward, director of facilities management at WSU, explained the process for dealing with a reported snake.

“If it’s on the trailhead, we would just shoo it back towards the wild,” Woodward said. “If it was on campus property, we would talk to the Division of Wildlife to have it removed.”

A species commonly mistaken for rattlesnakes is the gopher snake. There are many ways to tell the difference between a gopher snake and a rattler, but unfortunately, most of these distinguishing factors are not things

that are noticeable in a split second.

The main difference is the head and pupil shape. Gopher snakes have heads that are roughly the same width as the rest of their body and their pupils are circular. All Utah-native rattlesnakes have an elliptical or diamond-like pattern on their backs, and as they are all types of pit viper, have slit eyes and heads that are considerably wider than the rest of their body.

The most common rattlesnake in Utah is the Great Basin rattlesnake. Others that have been recorded in Utah are Mojave, Speckled, Sidewinder and Midget Faded.

Mojave rattlesnakes have a venom so strong it rivals true cobras. The danger of Mojave venom is it is both a neurotoxin and hemotoxin, meaning it targets both nervous system and brain function as well as muscle function. Mojave venom is one of four venoms used to produce Crofab, the antivenom used for pit viper venoms.

Though Mojave rattlesnakes are likely the most dangerous found within Utah borders, with proper medical intervention, bites are rarely fatal.
