NOW WE DON OUR GRADUATION APPAREL: THE MEANING BEHIND THE COLORS By CAITLYN LARSEN Reporter
At graduation ceremonies, graduates don their caps and robes, stoles and cords and a number of other significant decorations. The multicolored tassels aren’t just for show, though: there’s a meaning behind the colors. Each college or field of studies at Weber State University has a different color of tassel for their graduating students. In the College of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology, most of the tassels are orange: Master of Computer Engineering, Master of Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Associate of Pre-engineering graduates all wear orange. “Orange is the universal color for engineering,” said David Ferro, dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology.
Other graduates in the college graduating in Applied Science and Technology wear black tassels. In the Arts and Humanities college, most graduates wear a white tassel, with the exception of those graduating with a Master of Professional Communication, who wear a crimson tassel. All graduates in the College of Business and Economics wear brown tassels. Similarly, all graduates in all departments of the College of Education wear light blue tassels. The College of Health Professions, though, sports a wider variety of tassel colors. Masters of Respiratory Therapy, Masters of Athletic Training and Bachelors of Athletic Therapy wear sage green tassels. Masters of Health Administration, Bachelors of Health Administrative Services, Bachelors of Public Health and graduates in dental hygiene wear salmon-colored tassels. Masters of Nursing, Masters of
Congratulations
Graduates! We are ever inspired by your success.
Nurse Practitioner, Masters of Radiology and other graduates of health professions wear apricot-colored tassels. Yasmen Simonian, dean of the College of Health Professions, said that most of the students of emergency healthcare wear their class A or B public safety uniforms. If they do choose a cap and gown, they are provided the Health Profession’s apricot-colored tassel. All graduates in the College of Science wear golden yellow tassels. Most graduates in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences wear cream tassels, with the exception of those graduating with Masters of Criminal Justice, who wear citron tassels. Finally, integrated studies graduates wear cream tassels those graduating with their Associates in General Studies wear purple and white tassels. Graduation ceremony apparel has roots in tradition and history, each piece con-
taining meaning, and the colors of the tassels are no different. According to the Washington Post, white has traditionally been assigned to the arts. Green, representing medieval herbs, has been assigned to medicine, with olive green for pharmacy. The golden yellow assigned to science signifies the wealth that scientific research has produced. Today, all of the colors of the tassels for the different studies are frequently the same from one university to the next. Graduation robes for WSU students are purple for associates, and black for bachelors and masters. More information can be found at the graduation page on the WSU homepage for those graduating.

JENNIFER GREENLEE Commentary
Since the beginning of time, college students have wondered if college is worth it. But that’s the wrong question to ask. There are too many variables to the question “is college worth it?” and it’s not a yes or no answer. Students want an easy answer to whether or not they should go to college, but it’s not that simple. You have define each component of the question before you can define it. First, you have to determine what you mean by “college.” Do you mean a technical college, a four-year university, a community college or an institution with graduate schools? Each one of those have different requirements, time requirements, credit requirements and workplace value. The same goes for “worth.” When
MyWeberMedia.com | December 2, 2019 | 21
you say worth, you could be talking about monetary value of a degree, the experience you had in college, the time you spend in college compared to the money you make after or the money you spend on education to make money after you leave. And what is it? The time you put in? The money you spend on education? The monetary value the workforce places on your degree? The enjoyment you receive from studying your major? This question is also variable based on what major you’re studying. If you’re working on a degree that has a lower paying field when you graduate, you have to take that into consideration as well — and also if you value the monetary value of your field more than your enjoyment of the field. So, the question students should be asking? “Is college I am attending right now and the degree I am pursuing worth what I want to get out of it?” It’s not as catchy as a four word question that can fit in almost
any headline. But it does get an answer that applies to you. At Weber State, the monetary burden of education is much lower than at other colleges, especially those in other states. The cons of the monetary effects are diminished because of that. It doesn’t negate them, but it lessens them. The worth of college also depends on where you are in life. It’s much easier for a traditional student to get through a degree in four years without the burden of a mortgage or a family and other factors that impact nontraditional students. Porter Lunceford, a traditional student senior, found he ended up gaining connections and opportunities that have helped him prepare for the adult world at WSU while also being able to find financial aid to support him. WSU also has a high population of nontraditional students that attend school. Some of these are students returning to school after years of working or students who have a family.
Kenji Nakayu, a nontraditional graduating student and a peer mentor for other nontraditional students, has found college to be worth it for him for the future earning potential. “It’s easy to look at cost and break it down and see what you would earn if you went to college and if you didn’t and compare,” Nakayu said. “There’s also the knowledge and the skillset that you learn that are applicable, like working with deadlines and people.” While there is the monetary value to consider when considering college, benefits like improved skills and improved job outlook also has to be considered. If going to school improves your job enjoyment, and therefore your quality of life, that is a benefit to consider when evaluating your own personal view of college worth. “When I started at Weber, I had no idea what I wanted to do, and I end up going because I was expected to go into something,” Lunceford said. “I have learned skills in time management, communication
and problem solving. I have had the opportunity to work with faculty in my field, and it has solidified my confidence moving forward.” But if you want empirical data, The New York Times published an article about the worth of college in 2018. More than a third of Americans, aged 25 to 29, hold a bachelor’s degree, and the total student loan debt rose to $1.3 trillion dollars. However, according to the Pew Research Center, in 2013, Millennials with a Bachelor’s degree made 34 percent more income than those with some college and 38 percent more than those with only a high school diplomas. So is college worth it for you? I don’t know. And there’s no easy answer for you. It just depends on what you want to get out of it.

One of the biggest questions students in college ask themselves is ‘Will I be able to get a job after graduation?’ Career Services at Weber State University can help students to put their best selves forward and get the attention of future employers Career Services offers resources including career counseling and major exploration, career café, career resources, career development class, employment and internship resources, resume and interview preparation and career, internship and employment fairs, all with a mind toward helping students land jobs following graduation. One major aspect of career services is Wildcat Handshake. Building a positive profile is essential to making connections according to Career Services Director Dr. Winn Stanger. “Everybody is busy, and recruiters want to find the best people that they can in the most efficient and effective way possible,” Stanger said. By putting in the work up front with a job profile, such as what job you are looking for, what companies interest you and what salary you want to make, employers don’t have to guess or wonder if you will be a good fit. Students can put their best foot forward and appeal to employers. Through Handshake, students can schedule an appointment with their career advisor, find out about career and internship fairs and learn about other career-minded events on campus. Students can also share information with others about job opportunities, experiences or tips on interviewing they have had and can make connections with others who were or are in similar situations. Stanger also recommended that students use personal connections to find employment opportunities. A total of 87 percent of people who find an acquaintance or friend that works for a company they are interested in, and asks them to recommend them for the job, get the job they want.
Networking through sites such as LinkedIn, as well as using Handshake, can help students to get their name out there. Stanger noted that it doesn’t matter so much about who you know, but who knows you. The Career Center has a counselor for each college who is available to meet with students personally and get to know them. The more people that know you and what your interests are, the more people can recommend you as a potential employee. Building connections with Weber State Alumni, faculty and potential employers is a first step to find new possibilities. Building a resume is another accomplishment that Career Services can help students achieve. While advisors are available to help review students resumes and can help you to practice interviewing by appointment, starting in Spring of 2020 Career Services, will be offering a new program called Career Station. This activity will feature career mentors and peers as well as advisors who will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day to provide assistance and look over resumes. Students can drop in during their free time to gain professional help on polishing up resumes. One important tip for a great resume is to be specific. Having specifics such as numbers or statistics are important details that employers look for. Career Services also has a resume guide that walks you through how to build a qualified resume. Listing skills and accomplishments that are specific to the position that you want is one way to set your application apart from others, according to the guide. “Having the positive attitude of ‘I can do that,’ to whatever we are asked to do in an organization, knowing that is going to lead to other possibilities and opportunities. Knowing who you are, and where you want to go is key in moving forward. This is the best time to be in college and graduating,” Stanger said. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

Weber State’s Office of Access & Diversity and MEChA organization are hosting their second Latinx graduation ceremony in spring 2020, celebrating the achievements of the WSU Latinx community. The first Latinx graduation cer-
emony was held in spring 2019, with about 50 students who received their associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degrees. Cristian Gutierrez, a WSU college access advisor, helps prepare the ceremony. He hopes to double his number with the spring 2020 ceremony. Students who are graduating in fall 2019, spring 2020 or summer 2020 can participate in the ceremony if they choose. Gutierrez emphasized how this ceremony does not take away from the commencement. The Latinx grad ceremony is held in Spanish and English, which is specifically important for Latinx students’ families to be able to get the full experience of the occasion without any barriers. “My pops went to my high school graduation, and the language spoken was English, which he didn’t mind. My dad was taking in 20 percent of the actual ceremony,” Gutierrez said. “At the Latinx grad ceremony, he understood everything. I remember him saying, ‘I understood everything like it was made for me.’” At the event, graduates receive their stole and are given 30 seconds to say whatever they would like in the language they choose. “This type of ceremony and platform really creates that space to showcase what we have done as a whole and will continue to do no matter what people say about us, and we will rise above,” Gutierrez said. Adrian Cendejas, a WSU junior studying professional sales, believes this ceremony is a great way to
feel represented. “A lot of what we do for our parents derives from them,” Cendejas said. “You’re given a voice. It’s special to be around your people.” Gutierrez said events like the Latinx grad ceremony are important to students of color. It’s a moment to be recognized when at times they can feel marginalized and forgotten, according to Gutierrez. Gutierrez recognizes how WSU has been great at supporting this ceremony, and he wishes for it to grow. President Brad Mortensen also participated in the inaugural event, wearing the stole given to him at the ceremony to the commencement in front of all WSU graduates, families and faculty. “It was beyond anything I imagined,” Mortensen said. “It was so powerful to be able to have a program that our graduates and families could connect to.” Mortensen added how he could feel the pride from the families in the ceremony. He hopes the word gets out and more students become involved in this more intimate graduation ceremony. Mortensen hopes programs like this inspire students to believe they can reach their aspirations. “We all have our own identities, some of which are shaped by our skin color or our ethnicities, and it’s impossible for me to understand somebody else’s journey,” Mortensen said. Mortensen said any group is worth celebrating their unique culture, background and journey. Some of his most enriching experiences at WSU have been where he was involved with participating and experiencing someone else’s culture or identity. “The world is a diverse place and we can all go into our camps and think about ourselves, or we can try and understand each other and see how we can work together,” Mortensen said. and plead in order to go back to school.” She said that she wasn’t ready to go college right after high school and said she would’ve wasted whatever money that she got, partly due to the lack of preparation she received for real-world experiences. “In high school, nobody prepares you for the other things that you have to deal with as an adult. You’re told you have to go to college, but you’re not taught how to pay for bills. You’re not told that your parents may or may not be able to afford for you to go to school and keep you in the house still,” Hickman said. “It’s very hard, especially when you don’t have outside support.” Having lived in St. Louis, Illinois, Hickman described that going to college would have been a miracle for her and many other students.
“All we knew was to work. It was a miracle that I graduated high school. It was a miracle that I wasn’t pregnant in junior high,” Hickman said. “Nobody prepared me for that sort of thing. They think that you’re supposed to work, that you got it together. But you don’t.” Both Hickman and Muster’s experiences as non-traditional students are part of the large percentage of adversities that half of the WSU populate have faced. As graduation nears, non-traditional students face new challenges as they begin their search for careers in their chosen areas of study. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

Whether it’s marriage, divorce, children, age or multiple jobs, non-traditional students at Weber State University face various obstacles that demand their time and attention, which can impede progress toward completing a degree. Mar Muster, a WSU public relations student, went to college right after high school but didn’t earn her degree immediately. Societal pressures like marriage and children got to her and going back to school didn’t seem like an option after. Muster, who is graduating in December, said that balancing her school and home life was one of the most difficult things she had to do. “I balance it as best as I can, but oftentimes I feel guilty that I can’t put 100 percent into school, kids and work all at the same time,” Muster said. “I’m constantly hard on myself. But trying to balance life is something I have to do.” Like so many non-traditional students, there are usually motivating factors that lead them to pursue higher education. For Muster, it was a lack of support from her former husband. “When I was thinking about going back to school, my husband at the time said to me, ‘I just don’t think you can do it,’” Muster said. “And right now, I have a 3.9 GPA and I’m graduating, so he was wrong. That whole experience taught me that I am smart, and I can do hard things. I’ve put in the hard work and there’s a good chance I’ll be successful because of it.” Non-traditional students make up roughly 56 percent of WSU’s population. WSU’s Nontraditional Resource Center helps students schedule Smart Start appointments to help them prepare to go back to school and manage their finances. Smart Start also assists in leaving children at the local daycare center while the parents attend class. First-generation and non-traditional student Meltia Hickman didn’t go to college right after high school but found
success at WSU after following her late father’s advice to pursue higher education. “My dad was so much into education because he wasn’t able to get one,” Hickman said. “After high school, I went to a trade school. My dad always said things like, ‘You don’t like what you’re doing, so go do something different.’ After my dad passed away, I felt like I needed to honor what he was telling me to do, so I went back to school.” With a constantly-changing education system, those who continue to put off their schooling may not be able to use certain test scores they got in high school in order to receive financial assistance. Since Hickman waited seven years to return back to school, none of the test scores she earned in high school counted toward receiving scholarships and grants. “I literally had to start all over again,” Hickman said. “None of my scholarships were academic-based, so they all had to come from private donors or needbased organizations. I pretty much had to beg

Richardson mentally approaches mathematics and music in the same way. According to her, both disciplines require the mastery of skills. “You cannot just have somebody explain math and music to you,” Richardson said. “They both require lots of practice. They are both symbolic. They are languages in their own right. In both, you learn how different symbols interact with each other.” Richardson sees little difference between solving a complex mathematical problem and performing a classical piece. She believes both acts require the disciplined application of knowledge and skill. This is why she rejects the idea that a performing arts education is a waste of time and money. “Believe it or not, there is a little bit of this attitude within the musical community, itself,” Richardson said. “It is so competitive, and few musicians make it big. It is a labor of love, but you can take the learning and discipline skills of music and
apply them to other careers.” According to Richardson, the nature of music education and instruction inherently teaches people how to deal with discomfort and how to achieve goals. She believes music also helps people learn how to more fully appreciate the beauty of life and how to acquire coping mechanisms. She encourages music students and professionals to stay passionate about their art. She also invites others to attend the various on-campus concerts and performances. Richardson believes high school and university music programs can reach out to more students, especially minority students, by diversifying the musical curriculum to include more study of the Pop, Rock and Jazz genres. “When you allow a human being to be creative, they become more human, more of themselves,” Richardson said. “They learn to control emotions, to discipline themselves. Plus, they have fun doing it.” Comment on this story at: signpost.mywebermedia.com

High schools and universities across the U.S. are emphasizing STEM learning, and schools that come up short in the budget often look to make cuts to music programs. Also, arts and humanities majors often make the short list of the “Top Worst College Degrees” in various online publications. In a modern economy where everything from advertising to stock trading relies on big data and computer coding, it is easy to see why educational institutions are increasingly emphasizing careers in science, technology, engineering and math. However, some WSU performing arts majors want to remind their peers about music’s integral role in human history and society. Whenever somebody asks Music Education major Cara Richardson “What are you going to do with your degree?”, she gives them a big grin in return.
For as long as she can remember, she has wanted to perform music. Her parents were not musically-inclined, and they did not push her to take lessons as a child. Instead, she asked them if she could enroll in piano lessons. “I have wanted to do music my whole life,” Richardson said. “But according to others, it’s not a ‘real career.’” Richardson began her university education with the goal of becoming an engineer. While she discovered she hated her engineering courses, she realized she still loved mathematics; she is completing a second major in Mathematics Teaching. Despite being close to finishing her degree in Mathematics Teaching, Richardson could not escape her desire to continue her musical career. “I was almost done,” she said. “But music just kept calling to me. I figured that I was already in education, so I was set on also getting a Music Education degree. So literally, it is almost five years later, and I love it.”

WILDCATS CLAW PAST BOBCATS, FINISH SECOND
By KAINOA NUNEZ Reporter
The Swenson Gym was packed the night of Nov. 23 as the Weber State University volleyball team took the court for the final time at home against the Montana State Bobcats in a 3–0 set sweep. The matchup on Nov. 23 was also the last time seniors Katelyn Erwin, Helena Khouri, Megan Gneiting, Hannah DeYoung and Aubrey Saunders-Adams took the court at the Swenson Gym. “It’s always nice to win for your seniors,” head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. “I thought we played really well for three straight sets and beat a really nice Montana State team.” After the pregame honors, the Wildcats and Bobcats took the court for the first set, trading points throughout. The gym was loud with chants and erupted every time WSU scored. The evenly matched set needed extra scoring as the Wildcats squeezed by with a 26–24 set win. WSU kept the momentum going into the second set with a 25–18 set win, and
took a 2–0 lead into the five minute break. Montana State jumped out early in the third set with a 10–4 run, but the Wildcats retaliated with a 7–1 run and tied the set at 11–11. The Bobcats again found themselves with another lead that quickly vanished with a 7–2 run for the Wildcats. Both teams were tied again, this time at 20–20. The packed house was on their feet as the Wildcats finished the match with a 5–2 run and a 25–22 set victory. Weber State finished the season with a 22-7 overall record and 13-5 in conference. “Every home game, I love to see how my teammates come in everyday to work hard, and they drive and push me to be the athlete that I am,” DeYoung said. DeYoung is studying exercise and sport science and hopes to become a physical therapist to help rehabilitate those who sustain injuries. She has played over 320 sets and 95 matches and is one of the best blockers on the team. She also has the best hitting percentage in WSU volleyball history at .322 and 354 blocks. Erwin is studying elementary education and wants to be a teacher. She finished
her career with 310 sets and 95 matches, recording 600 digs. “I love children, and I believe that with this field, I can learn how to affect their lives growing up in the education aspect,” Erwin said. Gneiting is studying nutrition education and hopes to one day be a volleyball coach. “I love food and I got to be careful with what I eat if I want to be healthy for the rest of my life,” Gneiting said. Gneiting has played 400 sets in 110 matches, recorded 960 kills from 2,760 attacks and averaged 2.39 kills per set. She added 100 Service Aces and 650 digs and was selected in 2018 and 2019 for First Team All-Conference. Saunders-Adams is majoring in physical education and health and also hopes to become a volleyball coach. She played in 350 sets in 101 matches and recorded 320 blocks. “I can’t step away from the sport that I love,” Saunders-Adams said. “So I want to keep playing and coach it to my kids and to other kids in the future.”
Hannah DeYoung leaps to spike the ball during the Wildcats vs. Grizzlies volleyball game Nov. 23.
Khouri has a history of playing volleyball in her family, who are from Rio de Janiero, Brazil and continuing her passion for volleyball has come a long way for her. “I started playing because of my older sister and my mom, who has been a huge inspiration for me,” Khouri said. “Both have been my role models, and once I started playing, my family has supported me all the way to today.” She is studying communication in public relations and advertising, and because the field provides different options and choices, she hopes to pursue a career in advertising. Khouri played in 200 sets in 55 matches and recorded 720 digs as a Wildcat. Weber State enters the Big Sky Tournament as the second seed and will take on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Thanksgiving Day. The ’Cats are looking to the tournament for the first time since 1988. Comment on this story at: signpost.mywebermedia.com

As Weber State University’s football team prepared for their final home game of the season against Idaho State, the team’s 11 seniors also look to the matchup as their final home game of their Weber State careers. This year’s seniors have seen a lot of success over their four years, with head coach Jay Hill saying that this year’s senior class is the winningest in Weber State football history. “They’re great people, and they’re great football players,” Hill said. “They bust their butt, and they work hard. This program owes this group of seniors a lot because they’ve really changed this program.” After a victorious final game in front of the Wildcat home crowd, let’s take a deeper look at each senior’s time while at Weber State.
#9 - Adam Rodriguez, DE
Since his debut with the Wildcats in 2016, defensive end Adam Rodriguez has been key in making the Wildcats’ defense one of the most lethal in the country. In his freshman season, Rodriguez played in 11 games, where he totaled 21 tackles, including three for loss, one sack and two kickoff returns. His game grew in his sophomore campaign, finishing second on the team with 58 tackles and 3.5 sacks, with eight tackles and 2.5 sacks coming in the playoffs that year. Rodriguez also had a fumble recovery and two pass breakups in 2017. As the Wildcats became a bigger force in the Big Sky Conference, Rodriguez be-
Omar Gutierrez
came one of their most important players on either side of the ball. In his junior year, Rodriguez exploded, starting all 13 games of the season and finishing with 61 tackles, seven sacks, the third-highest total in the Big Sky Conference, 15 tackles for loss, which ranked fourth in the Big Sky, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Rodriguez received numerous recognitions for his stellar junior season, such as being named to the All-Big Sky First Team and HERO Sports All-America Third Team. Throughout his senior season, Rodriguez has continued his outstanding play. Before the season, he was named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference Team. So far, he has racked up 36 tackles, including six for loss, 4.5 sacks, four pass breakups and one quarterback hit. Rodriguez will major in athletic training as he finishes at Weber State.
#29 - Jacques Carter, CB
After sitting out the 2018 season, cornerback Jacques Carter played in two games for the Wildcats this year, against San Diego State and Northern Iowa. Before transferring to Weber State, Carter spent three seasons for the College of Idaho, where he recorded 38 tackles, eight pass breakups and two interceptions. Carter, who hails from Bogalusa, Louisiana, graduated from Clearfield High School in 2014 after two seasons at Layton Christian Academy. He will graduate from Weber State with a Bachelor of Integrated Studies degree.
#41 - Doug Lloyd, P
Originally from Mount Gambier, Aus-

tralia, punter Doug Lloyd has played a key role for the Wildcats’ special teams the past three seasons. His senior season has proven to arguably be his best, with Lloyd averaging over 43 yards per punt, currently ranking him sixth in the Big Sky Conference and eleventh in the nation. Lloyd was named Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the Wildcats’ September 28 game against Northern Iowa. In that game, Lloyd kicked seven punts, including five that landed inside the 20-yard line, three downed at Northern Iowa’s two-yard line and one that went 72 yards, a career-long punt for Lloyd. On the offensive side, Lloyd ran in a fake field goal attempt for a 30-yard touchdown against Idaho in October. In his junior season, Lloyd earned second-team All-Big Sky honors for helping the Wildcats reach the FCS quarterfinals. Lloyd recorded 80 punts for a total of 3,214 yards throughout the season, finishing ninth in the Big Sky with an average of 40.2 yards per punt. Off the field, he received Big Sky Academic All-Conference honors in Information Systems and Technology, which he plans to major in as he finishes at Weber State.
#51 - Chris Faaumu, OL
Hailing from Federal Way, Washington, offensive lineman Chris Faaumu looks to close his senior year with the Wildcats on a high note. Faaumu signed with the Wildcats in February 2018 and played in one game in the 2018 season but then suffered a season-ending injury. Before making his way to Ogden, Faaumu played two seasons at Cerritos Community College
Gordon Moimoi
in Norwalk, California, and achieved First Team All-Conference honors during his senior year at Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup, Washington. Faaumu is majoring in exercise science at Weber State.
#53 - Auston Tesch, LB
A local man throughout his career, linebacker Auston Tesch joined the Wildcats in 2014 after playing at Weber High School. After his LDS Church mission to Washington, D.C., Tesch joined the Wildcats’ defense and made an immediate impact, playing in all 12 games his freshman year and totaling 10 tackles and seven kickoff returns for 85 yards. He was also named to the Big Sky Academic All-Conference team in Health Sciences. His game stepped up further in his sophomore season as he recorded 39 tackles, two fumble recoveries, one blocked kick and one forced fumble as he played in every game in 2017. Tesch continued his dominance on defense in his junior year as he racked up 41 tackles, including five for loss, 1.5 sacks, two pass breakups and nine kickoff returns totaling 144 yards. Tesch was named to the All-Big Sky Third Team for his efforts in 2018. In his senior season, Tesch has continued to produce for the Wildcats’ defense, so far accumulating 42 tackles, six going for loss, three kick returns and one sack. In 2017, he was again named to the Big Sky Academic All-Conference team, this time in business administration, which he plans to major in.

man Gordon Moimoi has played a considerable role during his time at Weber State. During his first three seasons with the Wildcats, Moimoi played in 21 games for the Wildcats, totaling three tackles during gameplay. Prior to joining the team, Moimoi redshirted his freshman year after serving an LDS Church mission to Samoa and graduating from Timpview High School in Provo. Moimoi plans to major in social work as he finishes at Weber State.
#73 - Xavier Stilson, OL
Having been involved with the Wildcats since he signed in 2012, offensive lineman Xavier Stilson has seen the program grow substantially. After he returned from an LDS Church mission to Brazil, Stilson rejoined the program in 2016, although he didn’t see any playing time his freshman year. He first saw game action in his sophomore season, playing in five games as he helped the Wildcats to multiple honors, including a Big Sky title, a national ranking of fifth place and a school-record 11 wins. 2018 saw Stilson’s impact continue to grow as he became a more prominent force on the Wildcats’ offensive line. He played in nine games, starting in eight of them, and assisted in guiding the Wildcats to consecutive Big Sky titles and a trip to the FCS quarterfinals. In his senior season, Stilson has started every game on the Wildcats’ offensive line, helping the Wildcats reach a number-three national ranking and guiding their offense to many dominant FCS wins. Stilson plans to major

As he finishes his time at Weber State, Stilson cites Hill’s goal-oriented approach and his care for his players as something that will stay with him after he leaves. “Coach Hill takes the time to look at our own goals personally,” Stilson said. “I thought that was really cool. I think that being goal-driven and motivated every day is huge. That’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned from Coach Hill.
#84 - Martrel Holmes, WR
In his four years with Weber State, wide receiver Martrel Holmes has suited up for the Wildcats in six games, including three this season. In February 2015, Holmes signed with the Wildcats from Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, California. While playing for the Grizzlies, Holmes was named the 2014 Offensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-League First Team for his efforts. Holmes plans to graduate with a degree in professional sales from Weber State.
#92 - Kawika Tupuola, DE
As he finishes his time with the Wildcats, defensive end Kawika Tupuola leaves a considerable hole in the defense for next season. Tupuola has played in at least nine games every season that he has played for the Wildcats, playing a part in the Wildcats’ run to the playoffs each year. In his freshman year, he recorded six tackles, including one tackle for loss. His sophomore
year brought improvement to his game, playing in every game for the Wildcats and accumulating 19 tackles with one sack. He received Big Sky Academic All-Conference in Health Promotion in 2017. In his junior year, Tupuola again played in all of Weber State’s games, where he finished third on the team in sacks with four and also had 28 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss. He made a small impact on special teams as well, returning a kickoff for 24 yards and blocking a kick. This year, in his senior season, he has totaled 17 tackles with 3.5 for loss and half a sack. He will graduate this year with a degree in Exercise and Sport and plans to attend a physician assistant school and eventually pursue a career in pediatrics. Tupuola said that above all, he will miss playing with his teammates and coaches the most after he finishes his time as a Wildcat. “I’ve had awesome teammates, awesome brothers that I’ve made for life,” Tupuola said. “That’s something that will go on way past my senior year. More than anything, that’s what I’m most grateful for. When times get hard, that’s what makes it easy to stick around.”
tackles, including four for loss, four sacks and a blocked field goal attempt. Williams was named to the HERO Sports FCS All-Freshman team in 2016, one of five freshmen from the Big Sky Conference to make that list. Williams continued to improve in his sophomore season, finishing second on the team and 10th in the Big Sky with 5.5 sacks, 37 tackles, six for loss, two blocked kicks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, which earned him second-team All-Big Sky honors in 2017. His junior year continued his run of success, starting all 13 games on the defensive line and totaling 42 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. His play in 2018 earned him a spot on the All-Big Sky First team. In his senior season, Williams has maintained his level of play throughout the Wildcats’ season, being named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference Team and racking up 46 tackles, eight for loss, 6.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. Williams has also been named to the Big Sky Academic All-Conference Team the past two seasons in his major of business administration and finance.

When the clock finally struck midnight, the Wildcats rushed onto the field, gave Head Coach Jay Hill a Gatorade bath and relished the moment as Queen’s “We Are the Champions” blared on the speakers. The Weber State Wildcats were Big Sky Champions for the third season in a row. For the third straight year, Weber State kicked off with Idaho State as a top 10 team to end the regular season with a Big Sky Championship on the line. Just like the two previous years, the Wildcats handled business and celebrated another Big Sky title after pounding the Bengals 38–10. Weber State came into the Nov. 23 matchup ranked 6th in the STATS FCS Poll after last week’s slip up against Montana. They survived running into the claws of the Grizzlies and learned from it as they set their sights on the Bengals. Due to last week’s win by Montana, the Big Sky Championship was up for grabs and the Weber State Wildcats, Montana Grizzlies and the Sacramento State Hornets all held a claim to the throne after a wild year in Big Sky play. The trio of conference leaders each played each other but left no certainty on who was the conference’s best. #6 Weber State - Won @ Sacramento State 36–17. Lost @ Montana 35–16.
#3 Montana - Won vs Weber State 35– 16. Lost @ Sacramento State 49–22. #4 Sacramento State - Won vs Montana 49–22. Lost vs Weber State 36–17. Each team needed a win on Nov. 23 to hold a share of the title and make their case for being the conference’s highest-seeded team in the FCS playoffs. Before the kickoff, WSU honored their seniors because it was their last regular-season home game; the seniors are the winningest senior class in school history. “They’ve been great, they turned around a program where it was not where it could have been and now we’re getting closer to where it should be,” head coach Jay Hill said about the seniors. “I owe everything to these guys.” It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to strike against Idaho State. The game kicked off at 2:06 p.m. and by 2:08 p.m. WSU held a 7–0 lead. Junior quarterback Jake Constantine threw a dart across the field to junior wide receiver David Ames, who snagged it and went untouched into the end zone for the first score of the night. A statement was made in the first half by the ‘Cats, filled with big plays and hard hits, ultimately finishing with a 31–0 lead at halftime. The first half scoring barrage featured a 37-yard field goal from junior all-American kicker Trey Tuttle to bring the score to 10–0. Then, WSU opened their bag of tricks and
pulled out a flea-flicker that went 38 yards from Constantine to sophomore wide receiver Devon Cooley to give the Wildcats a 17–0 advantage. A stingy WSU defense gave the offense more chances to score, and they did just that with a 24-yard touchdown from sophomore all-American running back Josh Davis. The lead was then 24–0. Around 40 seconds later, Constantine and Cooley linked up a second time to bring the score to 31–0 right before the half and the rout was on. Constantine was boiling in the first half as he completed 12-16 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. His leading pass catcher was Ames, who had 4 catches for 140 yards and a touchdown. Constantine finished with 289 yards as the Wildcats kept the ball on the ground to keep the clock moving. “I feel like after we scored that touchdown on our first drive, the confidence went through the roof, and you could tell everyone was playing with confidence, and that was the biggest thing in today’s win,” Constantine said. Early in the second half, Idaho State broke the shutout by knocking down a field goal to put a small dent in the Wildcats’ 31–3 lead. The Wildcats responded to the Bengals score with a grueling 13 play, 75-yard drive that lasted nearly seven minutes and ended with Constantine throwing a laser to
sophomore wide receiver Ty MacPherson from six yards out to push the lead to 38–3. While the Wildcat offense put on a clinic, the defense left bruises and headaches. The defense had only given up 113 yards and 46 yards while the starters were in the game. Junior linebacker Conner Mortensen finished the game with eight tackles while senior linebacker Auston Tesch had five tackles of his own. In the final quarter of play, both teams exchanged possessions for most of the quarter before the Bengals found the end zone with 2:06 left in the game to trim the lead to 38-10. The Wildcats got the ball back, running out the clock as the video boards showed 2019 Big Sky Champions. The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 9-3 overall record and 7-1 in conference play with two of those loses coming to FBS programs. The Montana Grizzlies lost to rival Montana State in lopsided fashion, but Sacramento State held on to beat UC Davis. With the Wildcats and Hornets wins, both teams share the Big Sky Title, but WSU’s victory over Sac State earned them the automatic bid into the 2019/2020 FCS Playoffs. “Win and advance,” Hill said. “That’s the best part about college football at this level.” Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

’CATS BACK FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR
By BRANDON MAY Section Editor
As Lil Wayne once said, “I’m back, 3-Peat,” and the Weber State University football team did just that. For the third year in a row, the Wildcats are Big Sky Champions, and, for the fourth consecutive year, the ’Cats are back into the FCS Playoffs. On the Nov. 24 Sunday Selection Show on ESPNU, Weber State was announced as the third seed just behind North Dakota State, the number-one seed, and James Madison the number-two seed. “That’s where we’d hoped we’d end up,” head coach Jay Hill said. “Nobody was go-
ing to overtake James Madison or North Dakota State.” With the third seed, the Wildcats are guaranteed at least two home games through the quarterfinals. The ’Cats will take on the winner of Wofford and Kennesaw State in the second round on Dec. 7 at Stewart Stadium, with kickoff at 1 p.m. If Weber State were to advance to the quarterfinals, they could take on the University of Montana at Stewart Stadium. “We got the matchups the way we wanted,” Hill said. “We have a very good opponent here in the second round (Wofford/ Kennesaw State).” Weber State could also have another
rematch in the semifinals. James Madison beat the ’Cats in Virginia in the 2017 FCS Quarterfinals. The Wildcats have made it to the FCS Playoffs eight times in their history; four have been under Hill for four straight years. However, Weber State has yet to make it past the quarterfinals. The Wofford Terriers play in the Southern Conference, where last year they finished top of their conference with an 8-3 record. Wofford College is located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Kennesaw State Owls finished 10-2 and second in the Big South Conference. KSU is located in Kennesaw, Georgia.
“We don’t know much about them right now,” Hill said on Wofford and Kennesaw. “We will watch a lot of film and take advantage of the bye week.” The ’Cats will look to welcome a warm-weather team into Ogden and continue to be the bad-weather team they pride themselves on. “I’m stocked. The bracket is just how we wanted it,” senior defensive end Jonah Williams said. “We’ve been here two years in a row now and we’re ready to make it past the quarterfinals. That’s our goal. We’re trying to win this thing.” Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

The Weber State University Student Senate, together with faculty, organized a forum to discuss academic freedom, freedom of speech on campus and student safety. This forum was held on Nov. 25 in response to the videos posted on YouTube by Michael Moreno in late October. These videos have raised questions about students recording their professors and what constitutes academic freedom. Moreno stated in an interview that he condemns any violence or safety violations that have occurred because of these videos. However, these videos depict students, and several members of the debate team have been doxxed because of them. The forum began with a debate on whether or not the forum should be recorded. Adrienne Andrews, the Assistant Vice President for Diversity & Chief Diversity Officer, led the forum as the moderator and asked that no one record any audio or video. Moreno initially refused to turn off his recorder, stating that because it was a public event, he did not need the explicit consent of those in the room in order to record. Several students then stated they did not consent to be recorded.
At this time, the Student Code, located in the Policies and Procedures Manual, states “Any unauthorized use of electronic or other devices to make an audio or video record of any person while on University premises without his/her prior knowledge, or without his/her effective consent when such a recording is likely to cause injury or distress. This includes, but is not limited to, surreptitiously taking pictures of another person in a gym, locker room, or restroom.” Many of the students were afraid of the possible repercussions if the audio was uploaded to YouTube or another site and shared with those outside of the room. A vote was taken among the attendees, and it was decided that no recording would be allowed. Moreno stayed throughout the meeting with the understanding he would not be able to record. Moreno’s previously uploaded videos were brought up several times, but the faculty present were unable to speak about them because the discussion may have constituted a FERPA violation and further violate the Debate Team’s privacy. The remaining portion of the forum was spent discussing student safety and academic free speech. Many of those present from the debate team were concerned about how to keep
themselves safe. There has been an increased police presence around campus, specifically in Elizabeth Hall, to allow students to feel more safe. “If there are safety concerns happening, I condemn them.” Moreno said. “But it’s not my fault.” Students also raised concerns with how to report incidents and where they should begin. Public Safety Director and Former Chief of WSUPD Dane LeBlanc encouraged students to immediately report any threats to their safety to police, even if they are not sure of how severe it may be. For issues relating to a student’s right to learn, students can contact the Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity office. This is available for those who feel that discrimination against an identity is prohibiting their ability to learn and participate in class. If a student needs to report feeling unsafe or any harassment, but wishes to do so more confidentiality, Paige Davies advocated for students to go to the Safe@Weber advocate Jessica Miller by visiting the WSU Women’s Center. While most communication doesn’t have to be reported to any outside sources, if there is a threat of harm to students, the report would be taken to the police.
Alongside the concern for safety, academic freedom has been discussed among faculty in a separate forum. Provost Madonne Miner stated that how a teacher decides to educate their students is largely up to their discretion. Students that have a problem with class material or the discussions that are taking place during a course can take them to the department chair and express them. In some cases, exceptions or accommodations can be made with the professor. The forum was largely dominated by students talking about their concerns. As one of the organizers, Nailah Mansa, the African American Student Senator, felt it was successful. “If we could have a better idea of what the ground rules are so that we could send them out in advance, so people know what they are, that would be helpful,” Mansa said. “I hope that everyone felt that they were able to say what they needed to say.” The discussion surrounding recording professors and others on campus will continue to happen in meetings with faculty and those in the various levels of the administration, and policy will continue to be reviewed and updated as needed. The Angel Tree program, originally created by the Salvation Army in 1979, provides clothing and toys for children at Christmas time. For approximately 11 years now, Weber State has partnered with the Salvation Army to bring an Angel Tree to campus. From Nov. 11 to Dec. 13, students, faculty and staff will be able to select an angel or angels, the recipients of the program’s donations, from the WSU trees. One tree is located on the Ogden campus in the Shepherd Union building; the other tree is on the Davis campus in the D3 Atrium. After a participant has selected an an-
gel, they return a new, unwrapped gift no later than Dec. 13 by 2 p.m. to either the Center for Community Engaged Learning in SU 324 or the Davis Student Involvement and Leadership Office in D3 221. There is no limit on how many angels someone can choose. According to the event page on Weber’s website, each angel has information listed about them on their ticket to help the participant select the perfect gift. This information includes the person’s first name, age, sex, clothing/shoe size, wants and needs. Gifts must include the matching Angel Tree ticket when turned in. The Salvation Army will then collect the gifts and allow families to pick them up before Christmas.
