Weber State University’s student retention rates have grown as administration continues their efforts to help students stay at WSU, especially those in risk-categories.

WSU’s retention rates for first-time, degree-seeking students have continued to increase over the past five years, even through the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that has been ongoing since early 2020.

WSU administration, including Jessica Oyler, Associate Provost for Enrollment Management and Student Success, and Eric Amsel, Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Assessment, have worked to focus on those marginalized groups who are most susceptible to dropping out.

These groups include first-time, full-time Bachelor’s Degree seeking students, first generation students, students placed in

developmental math and English courses and non-resident students.

In WSU’s efforts to desegregate the data on student retention, it was found that students with lower ACT/SAT scores or had lower high school GPAs were the most at risk of not returning for another semester or another school year.

“One of the things I think we’ve done is to really help developmental students, developmental English, developmental math, because they can get stuck in the developmental sequence,” Amsel said.

“They’re not earning college credit. They’re paying a lot of money. Trying to get them out of developmental as quickly as possible has been a goal. And we’ve been creating what are called co-requisite classes. So they combined the developmental course with the college credit bearing course.”

WSU has worked to ensure these students and other enrolled individuals are not left behind. There are programs, courses and

resources in place for every WSU student in order to promote success and retention.

“There are a lot of initiatives, including faculty outreach, building corequisite courses, embedding student learning assistants in some courses, creating learning communities, requiring orientation, Ask Waldo nudge texts, targeted outreach for financial aid, building advising capacity,” Amsel said.

These initiatives have increased firstyear retention at WSU. In 2012, the Dream Weber program was implemented, which raised retention from 47.7% to 53.7% in just two years. In 2014, the Take Math in First Year policy was removed, followed by the Student Success Steering Committee and Wildcat Scholars Programs in 2016. The Strategic Enrollment Management Plan, the hiring of eight retention advisors and Early Alert being implemented in 2017 raised retention to 55.1% in 2018.

In 2018, the Four-Year Scholarship Model and Starfish Progress Surveys were im-

plemented, followed by Key Performance Indicators being launched. Faculty members were asked how they contribute to student success beginning in 2019, which helped WSU to reach its goal of 60% firstyear retention in 2021, five years before the original goal of 2026.

Both WSU’s Fall-Spring and Fall-Fall retention rates have risen through this process. In fall 2017, the Fall-Spring retention rate was 74.6% while in the fall of 2021, that rate was 79.1%. In Fall 2017, the Fall-Fall retention rate was 54.2%, while in Fall 2021, that rate was up to 60%.

First-year student retention has improved through the availability of four-year scholarships, which allow students to worry less about their finances and focus more on their education. This has prevented many students from dropping out due to unforeseen financial circumstances or the loss of a scholarship.

“We implemented a four-year scholarship

New students attending an orientation of the Weber State campus. Students can schedule orientation through their eWeber Portal.

model so students, instead of not being guaranteed each year, could have scholarships each year … it was implemented four years ago,” Oyler said. “We’ve hired more advisors overall. And then this last year, we launched texting system as well.”

WSU is making way for students from marginalized groups and backgrounds, such as Dev-Dev students, or students placed in Developmental English and Developmental Math, to obtain their degrees and succeed through their education and also push the institution ahead of many others in the nation.

“Dev-Dev students had an overall retention rate of 43% in 2016 … The 2021 cohort of Wildcat Scholars, representing about 25% of first-time Dev-Dev-placed students, were retained at 72.%. More generally, this year, our BIPOC retention rate surpassed our retention rate for white students. We have small gaps for our Pell-eligible students and first-generation students that we still want

to close, but they are smaller gaps than nationally,” Amsel said.

Through the process of trying to increase student retention, WSU has worked to personalize the process of getting a degree to each student and work with the students to ensure the best plan possible to get their Bachelor’s degree within a six-year period.

“I think what we’re trying to do is really tailor supports to students in unique ways, depending on what they need,” Oyler said. “So Weber was always this ‘Come to Weber, we’ll give you a process.’ Now we’re really sort of figuring out what supports are needed by which students and when and that seems to be moving the needle on students saying, ‘Yeah, I’ll stay. I feel like this is a place I could learn and grow,’” Oyler said.

“No obtienen créditos universitarios.

Share this story at thesignpostwsu.com

As 2022 fall semester inches to its much-anticipated end at Weber State University, this semester’s graduates are preparing to enter the next chapter of their lives and receive their diplomas during this year’s fall convocation ceremonies.

During WSU’s 2022 Fall Commencement on Dec. 16, students will attend the convocation ceremonies of the colleges they’re graduating from.

This year, there will be a total of 10 differ-

ent college convocation ceremonies held by WSU. It is important for graduating students to remember that all of WSU’s Fall convocation ceremonies will be held on the same day, Dec. 16. Each ceremony is scheduled to be two and a half hours long, with eight of the ten ceremonies split equally between being held at the Dee Events Center and the Austad Auditorium in the Browning Center.

WSU ROTC’s convocation ceremony will be held at the Shepherd Union Building’s Wildcat Theater at noon and the Bachelor of Integrated Studies convocation ceremony will be held in the Hetzel-Hoellein room at the Stewart Library at 1 p.m.

The ceremonies taking place in the Browning Center and the Dee Events Center will begin at 8 a.m., with both locations’ last ceremony of the day scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Graduates from WSU’s College of Science, the John B. Goddard School of Business, the Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities and those graduating under General Studies will receive their diplomas in the Austad Auditorium at the Browning Center.

At the Dee Events Center, convocation ceremonies for the Jerry & Vickie Moyes College of Education, the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, the College of Engi-

neering, Applied Science & Technology and the Dr. Ezekiel R. Dumke College of Health Profession will be held.

In the wake of years past where the COVID-19 pandemic made group gatherings complicated to orchestrate, students and staff are looking forward to a simple, straight-forward commencement day this year. All the ceremonies will be held in person and broadcasted online.

Becky Thompson, the events coordinator on WSU’s university advancement team, said the schedule for this year’s fall commencement ceremony is “pretty cut and dry.” Thompson added that the individual

colleges this year have done well in communicating with their graduating students about the details of this year’s convocation ceremonies.

Graduating students are advised to keep an eye on their WSU email inboxes should updates or additional information from their college be sent out.

WSU’s Disability Services department will be providing American Sign Language interpretation for all ceremonies being held at the Browning Center and the Dee Events Center. In both locations, the images of the interpreters will be broadcast so they

can be seen from any seat in the respective auditoriums.

The ASL interpretation for these ceremonies will also be present in the broadcasts, along with live captioning.

As far as the ceremonies not taking place in either the Browning Center or Dee Events Center, ASL interpretation is currently not planned to be featured. However, students who are in need of ASL interpretation can request that accommodations be made for either ceremony by contacting deafservices@weber.edu 72 hours in advance.

Students and family can access the full

Weber State University diplomas stacked together. There will be a total of 10 different college convocation ceremonies planned for this fall.

Weber State University’s graduation commencement ceremony is taking place on Dec. 16 at the Ogden campus. When attending, one may notice graduating students wearing different colored tassels with their cap and gown. These differing colors signify the different colleges at the university.

The history behind wearing colored tassels at graduation dates back to the 14th century. European universities used them to signify specific academic achievements and exploits.

At WSU, these tassels help show what each graduate studied, celebrating their accomplishments and experiences made during their education.

Graduates wearing orange tassels completed one of the following degrees; master

or bachelor of computer or electrical engineering or an associate of pre-engineering.

White tassels are given to those who complete an arts and humanities degree or earn a Master’s of English. Master’s of professional communications will receive crimson tassels.

Business and economics degrees wear a brown tassel, the same goes for Master’s of business administration, accounting and taxation. Those who got Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education wear light blue. Health professions, Master’s of nursing, nurse practitioner and radiology wear apricot colored tassels.

Students who complete degrees in respiratory therapy, athletic training or athletic therapy receive sage green tassels.

Salmon is reserved for Bachelor’s degrees in public health or health administrative ser-

vices and Master’s of Health Administration. Science degrees get to wear yellow tassels and Master’s of criminal justice wear citron. Cream is for social behavioral sciences and Bachelor’s of interdisciplinary studies, a purple and white combination is worn by students who have completed associates degrees in general studies.

These days, the main purpose of the tassel is to turn it from one side of the graduation cap to the other. This signifies that the student is going from a candidate to a graduate. The tassel will often have a charm with it to show the year that the student graduated. Share this story at thesignpostwsu.com

There are many costs associated with graduating. Many of these costs are well understood, like the application fee, the fee to walk, the cost of the gown and the diploma with its particular frame. However, Weber State University does not charge for applying or walking for graduation, graduates’ caps, gowns and cords.

When it comes to tassels, students have the option of purchasing a commemorative tassel from the Wildcat Store for $15.

For many, a Stole of Gratitude is important as they are sashes worn during graduation with a personal thank-you note to whoever was important during the student’s path to graduating.

After a student walks, they take the stole off and give it to the person that they had dedicated it to. These can be bought from the Wildcat Store for around $20.

Josten’s, the company WSU goes through for graduation gowns and where students can find graduation rings, offers other forms of graduation jewelry.

A band with the graduation year will be $368. On the high end, most rings will be around $800. Collegiate tags range from $389-$497.

Josten’s also sells “the uploma,” a statue version of a diploma that can be made from wood or metal. They are either $250 or $270.

“The Grad Finale is the best place to go,” Gavin Jensen, deputy director of the Wildcat Store, said. “There, the seniors can pick up their gowns, caps and cords.”

Grad Finale takes place on Dec. 6 this year and seniors can celebrate the progress they’ve made, collect their items for graduation and sign up for the Alumni Association. Those who sign up for the Alumni Association can also get a special license plate cover.

If students would like to buy a frame from WSU’s bookstore, a simple black frame costs about $10. The ones with a dedication for students’ tassels are $50, and the wood frames with WSU engraved into the glass start at $250.

Other graduation merchandise available include thank-you cards, class rings, professional photos, celebration dinners and possible graduation trips.

Graduation announcements range from the cheaper end from businesses like Shutterfly to the more expensive options like Josten’s. The cost depends on the style,

the amount and the business they are purchased from.

Thank-you cards tend to be a cheaper option compared to announcements. Students can buy a 50-pack of thank-you cards from Walmart for $10.

In terms of graduation photos, the photography cost calculator, Snappr Photography, estimates a two-hour graduation photoshoot in Utah costs around $350-$400.

If graduates decide to celebrate their graduation with a trip, the price can range from a few hundred dollars in the U.S. to a few thousand internationally.

No matter how graduates decide to celebrate, there are always more affordable options to create a unique graduation experience.

As the fall semester comes to an end, graduation ceremonies begin. It brings into question how students can stay connected with Weber State University after graduation.

Some ways graduates can stay connected with WSU is through the alumni association, professional connections they have made, or future employment opportunities.

Amanda Nef, a WSU student graduating this fall, said that WSU has provided experiences that are valuable to her.

“My favorite part about my time at WSU is the time spent connecting with the Davis Campus,” Nef said. “I’ve held two jobs at that campus.”

Nef shared the personal impact the alumni association at WSU had on her. She mentioned that she wasn’t familiar with the association until being granted the Cat2Cat scholarship this semester.

“It not only helped give me that final push my last semester, but it also made me appreciate the people who are giving back,” Nef said. “As a childhood cancer survivor, I occasionally like to donate time and money to Primary Children’s Hospital. The doctors there are amazing, and I want kids to experience the same joy and hope that I did when struggling on chemotherapy too. I think on a different scale, college is like that too; alumni students give back to current students because they understand how hard it is and want others to succeed.”

Abby Monroe, the new alumni coordinator

for the alumni association discussed the Cat2Cat scholarship and how it is an important part of the alumni association.

“We work hard to meet alumni where they are, and help them stay connected with volunteer service, engagement through experiential opportunities, give-back opportunities with philanthropy, and the ability to stay up-to-date with interactive communication,“ Monroe said.

The alumni association has an important part for the alumni and current students at WSU. They provide scholarships, and career help, service opportunities, the traditions keeper, and more. To keep students engaged at WSU, and to promote further connection to the university even after graduation.

“It’s nice to see a community of people who are on the other end, who have crossed

the finish line, and still like to stay connected,” Nef said. “It motivates you as a student to keep on going and to finish school.”

Whatever students’ future plans are, WSU promotes further engagement with the university and community in Ogden even after graduation.

“The advice I would give to a new graduate would be to pay attention to the people you’re sitting next to in class,” Monroe said.

“There are so many great people that walk the halls of Weber State. You are sitting next to incredibly great people. Weber State has something to offer everyone, so take advantage of the opportunities and resources WSU has to offer.”

Nef Said

Weber State University’s Career Services is here to help students get their academic success rolling. When students have no idea what they want to do or want to inquire about jobs or internships, they can turn to Career Services.

Winn Stanger, adjunct professor in the school of business at WSU, has been the director of Career Services for almost 21 years.

Stanger understands that students’ lives can get busy, which is why Stanger says, “the sooner, the better,” when it comes to WSU students getting into the Career Services department on campus. Their center is located in the Student Services Building, room 230.

“We help them understand their interests, their skills, their abilities, their values,” Stanger said. “That helps point towards ca-

reers that those values, skills and values will be best used; then we help students align a major with those career aspirations.”

Career Services goes over students’ resumes and internships with the goal of maximizing the student experience.

Rachel Foster, administrative and event specialist at Career Services, said the Career Services Center offers drop-in services for students and alumni.

During the weekdays, drop-in services are available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for free help with resumes and cover letters.

Jacob Wilkey, a career counselor with the College of Health Professions at Career Services, has been with WSU as a career counselor for over eight years. Wilkey helps students with fine-tuning resumes, networking, social media presence and mock interviews.

“Any kind of career need, we are here for students,” Wilkey said. “Each one of us

counselors also have different projects and assignments, so I am also involved with the marketing team. I love the people we work with, I love meeting with students, I love meeting with students and seeing the lightbulb click.”

Discussing the impact of Career Services, Wilkey recounted meeting with a freshman student who was not sure where to start with college. Wilkey helped the student find the area of study she wanted to go into, take some preliminary assessments and worked with her to find out what to do next.

“Two years later, I met with her,’’ Wilkey said. “She was in a program in the College of Health Professions, and she was really grateful that I was there to help give her some options.”

Wilkey expressed that there are a lot of great things at Career Services. When students come in, staff often hear students saying that they wish they had known more

about Career Services sooner.

Alejandro Silva, a sophomore at WSU and senior career mentorat Career Services, wears many hats at WSU’s Career Services, whether that means training new student employees or having students shadow Silva while he does resume reviews and training for cover letters. Silva also helps run the Canvas page for Career Services.

“The way I see leadership is inspiring others to do things … I had a student come in and he came in the next week and he said, “’I have an interview”’ — and he comes back twice for mock interview — the week after he told me that he had got the job, and it is great to know that our help is helping others,” Silva said.

LOSING THE BATTLE IN BOZEMAN

Ending their FCS playoff run, Weber State University’s football team fell to Montana State University 33–25 on Dec. 3.

“Looking back on this season, I’ll never forget it,” senior wide receiver Ty MacPherson said. “Sucks that we came to Bozeman twice and couldn’t pull it up, but props to Montana State for being tough and doing what they needed to do to get us twice in two close, good games.”

Playing in Bozeman, Montana, the Wildcats were met with freezing colds and a hostile crowd of nearly 17,000 people. Weber State started the game with the ball after the Bobcats deferred their return to the second half.

Playing from their own 25-yard line, Weber State came in ready to make a strong first impression. After receiving a 5-yard pass from quarterback Bronson Barron, running back Dante McMillan broke through the defense and found his way to

midfield. Barron then found his way around the line and upfield, getting the Wildcats to Montana State’s 40-yard line.

During their opening drive, McMillan and Barron netted 52 combined rushing yards. Playing from the Bobcats’ 21-yard line, the Wildcats were stopped as Barron’s pass was swatted by Rylan Ortt and nearly intercepted.

On fourth down with 4 yards to go, the Wildcats settled for a 39-yard field goal from Kyle Thompson, putting Weber State up 3–0.

Starting from their own 25-yard line, Montana State’s offense entered the field ready to respond. Quarterback Tommy Mellott started the drive with a pitch to running back Elijah Elliott, who ran up the side for 7 yards.

Stuck near midfield on third down with three yards to go, Mellott broke through the defense and ran to the Wildcats’ 25-yard line. Running back Isaiah Ifanse found an opening on the next play with a 7-yard run to the left. After a few runs from quarterback

Sean Chambers, the Bobcats were in the end zone.

Not able to progress on their drive, Weber State punted and put Montana State on the 15-yard line. Despite being pushed back to the 10-yard line after a false start call, the Bobcats were able to capitalize on their possession. Mellott started the drive with a big throw to wide receiver Taco Dowler, putting Montana State on their own 37-yard line.

After crossing midfield, Chambers handed the ball to Mellott for a run to the 22-yard line. Despite their progress, the Wildcats’ defense stopped the Bobcats and forced a field goal at the start of the second quarter.

Ready to tie the game from the 21-yard line, Weber State started their drive with a pass from Barron to wide receiver Jacob Sharp, putting the Wildcats at midfield. During the drive, Barron and Sharp connected for 44 yards.

On second down with 6 yards to go, running back Josh Davis split through the

defense and ran to the 9-yard line. Trying to hold Weber State to a field goal, Montana State safety Ty Okada sacked Barron, putting the Wildcats at the 17-yard line. On the next play, Barron threw to MacPherson in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.

Looking to get their lead back, Chambers started Montana State’s next drive with a 15-yard run. Finding their way to Weber State’s 15-yard line, Chambers and Mellott netted 39 combined rushing yards. Unable to progress on third down and eleven, the Bobcats kicked a 33-yard field goal.

“We should have played it better than we did the first time and we didn’t,” Wildcat head coach Jay Hill said. “I hold myself most accountable. We should have had something a little better for the players to stop that running game.”

With 2:40 left in the half, Weber State’s next possession only lasted a set of downs. After being responsible for four two-point safeties in their last matchup against Montana State, Wildcat long snapper Grant Sands entered the field with chants.

Starting from their own 43-yard line, the Bobcats made their next drive meaningful. On first and ten, Elliot ran left for a 12-yard gain. Running the ball exclusively between Mellott and Elliot, Montana State was able to score a field goal before the end of the half, making the score 16–10.

The Bobcats received the ball to start the second half. Continuing with a run-heavy offensive system, Montana State’s drive ended with a field goal to make the score 19–10.

Trying to respond, Barron dropped into the backfield, only to be pressured and forced to throw the ball away. Hit while he was throwing, Barron was slow to get up for the next play. After throwing to wide receiver Hayden Meacham for a 5-yard gain, Barron left the game.

The Bobcats started their drive from the 25-yard line after a Weber State punt. Continuing to rely on the ground along

with small pass plays, Montana State fought their way to the Wildcats’ 28-yard line. Taking the snap, Chambers found tight end Derryk Snell wide open for a Bobcat touchdown.

Down 26–10, kick returner Abraham Williams tripped on Weber State’s 3-yard line. Looking for breathing room, Davis ran up the middle for 4 yards. Replacing Barron, quarterback Kylan Weisser found MacPherson at the 26-yard line.

Despite the progress, the Wildcats weren’t able to fight for another set of downs after MacPherson’s catch. Punter Jack Burgess failed to get the punt off on time for a delay of game. Burgess then punted to Montana State’s 41-yard line to end the third quarter.

Mellott threw an incomplete pass to start the Bobcats’ drive but ran for 12 yards on their next play. Working from Weber State’s 47-yard line, Chambers threw a long pass to wide receiver Willie Patterson for a Montana State touchdown.

Trying to close the gap, Weisser threw to

wide receiver Hudson Schenck, who tipped the ball into the hands of linebacker Danny Uluilakepa for an interception. Despite getting to Weber State’s 32-yard line, Montana State failed to score as kicker Blake Glessner missed a 49-yard field goal.

Still down 33–10, Weber State started their drive from the 32-yard line. Keeping the Wildcats’ chances alive, McMillan broke through the defense for a 20-yard run. Weisser then found Meacham on a 12-yard pass up the middle.

Playing from the Bobcats’ 31-yard line, Weisser threw a deep pass into wide receiver Jon Christensen’s arms for a touchdown. Weisser then found a jumping MacPherson for a two-point conversion.

Forcing a Montana State punt after a set of downs, Weisser facilitated the offense, throwing an 11-yard pass to MacPherson to put Weber State near midfield. Getting the offense to the redzone, Weisser threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Meacham.

With 4:42 left in the game, Montana State took as much time as they could

during their next possession. Bringing in Chambers, the Bobcats ran on every play. Getting to the Wildcats’ 9-yard line, Chambers took a knee to drain the clock and end the game.

Weisser and Barron combined for 193 yards and 3 touchdown passes. Mellott netted 167 yards, while Ifanse netted 91 and Chambers 92.

“I was proud of our guys,” Hill said. “How they fought, never gave up, still gave us a chance at the end. We just needed to get out of that last drive and see what would’ve happened.”

Weber State ended their season 10–3 with a 6–1 home record. Coming back next year, the Wildcats will start the season in Cedar Falls, Iowa, against the University of Northern Iowa on Sept. 9, 2023.

Weber State University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted three games at the Dee Events Center on Dec. 1 and 3.

The Wildcat women pulled away from the week with a 74–69 loss from in-state rival Utah State and a 64–51 win against Seattle University.

The men’s team played one game during the week and fell 77–65 to in-state rival Utah Tech University on Dec. 3.

Women’s Basketball

What looked to be a close game against the Aggies turned into a late surge from USU that the ‘Cats couldn’t come back from. USU won 74–69.

Of the four quarters played, Weber State only outscored USU in the first quarter, 16–11. Laura Taylor and Daryn Hickok led

the squad with six points each, while Jadyn Matthews and Amelia Raidaveta contributed two points each.

USU started to find a flow to the game and collected 16 points in the second quarter compared to the Wildcats’ 14. Despite the Aggies’ attempts to tie the game before the half, their late start in the first quarter left them down 30–27 at the break.

The dynamic duo of Hickok and Matthews led the squad in the third quarter, scoring 11 of the Wildcats’ 17 points. Hickok scored five points in the first two minutes of the quarter off of some free throws and a 3-pointer.

On the Aggies’ side, Olivia Wikstrom had 5 points, while Tamiah Robinson had 6. The Aggies had the lead headed into the fourth quarter, 46–44. The Aggies outscored the ‘Cats 28–22, the largest difference in points scored throughout all quarters.

Hickok led the squad with 27 points, a career high, Matthews was second with 19 and

Taylor collected 14 points.

“We have to be so mentally tough,” Matthews said. “We can’t have errors like that. These are lessons I think we are going to learn from.”

Following the Wildcats’ loss to the Aggies, they looked to their next game against Seattle University to get back into the win column.

The Wildcats looked to capitalize on a lead, and they did just that. At the half, the ‘Cats had a 39–21 lead and were able to close out the game 64–51. They are now 4–4 on the season.

Men’s Basketball

Utah Tech traveled up to Ogden with fans in tow and handed the ‘Cats a 77–65 loss.

What looked to be a back-and-forth game in the early minutes of the half slowly turned into a 10–0 run that resulted in the Trailblazers leading 14–4.

“They came out and punched us in the mouth,” Steven Verplancken Jr. said. “When we have to play from behind, it’s just tough the whole game.”

Verplancken looked to be the answer for the ‘Cats, but the efforts of one player wasn’t enough to keep the team afloat. Verplancken had five points in the first 11 minutes of the first half.

Despite their best efforts, the Wildcats trailed UTU 40–28 at the half.

Both teams scored 37 points each in the second half, but the Trailblazers’ performance in the first half is what kept them from a close game.

Verplancken led the squad with 15 points, nine of those points coming from 3-pointers, Dillon Jones was close behind with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Jones now has four double-doubles on the season.
