Lost and found On Oct. 16 just before 2 p.m. the Weber State University Police Department responded to a call after a bullet was found in Lampros Hall. The bullet was later identified as a live .45 cal hollow point ammunition round. WSU safely disposed of it. Security camera quality prevented identification of the owner.

Possession of the live round was swiftly taken by WSUPD who saw to it that the bullet was adequately and safely disposed of. Trespasser found behind Alumni Building Just before noon on Oct. 19, WSUPD officers on patrol found a trespassing individual drinking alcohol behind the Alumni Building. Upon speaking with the individual and running his ID, the officers discovered that the suspect had nine active warrants for his arrest.

The officers took the suspect into custody and he was booked into Weber County Jail for the charges associated with his warrants. Returning to the scene, officers reportedly cleaned up a dozenTwisted Tea cans, leading them to suspect that the individual would frequent that spot as a place to drink his alcohol. Another instance of vandalism A WSUPD officer was dispatched to the Stromberg Complex on the afternoon of Oct. 23 to investigate a report of vandalism. The

The Oct. 23 Weber State University’s student senate meeting was quiet compared to last week’s when student senators heard protests from students in response to the vandalism at the Dee’s Event Center on Oct. 13. Student senators heard about this week’s events surrounding Mental Health Week, which includes a variety of events in the Shepherd Union atrium involving coping mechanisms or learning about yoga.

Brandon Flores, the new executive director for belonging at WSU, joined the senators for a brief presentation on how he plans on making changes to the multicultural centers. Regarding his plans for the center currently in the works, Flores discussed how “knocking down walls” will make all the difference. “I think there’s little things that we can do to make it more inviting, more welcoming, and a lot of it comes down to our programming, a place for students to come down there,” Flores said. “They need to sense and see the value of that space, what we do, how we do it, is going to create that value, and it’s

going to be inviting, that’s what’s gonna really invite people to that side of campus.” Last week, Native American Senator Aaron Egli introduced a bill that would change the words in the Weber State University Student Association Constitution. The bill aims to change how the student senate nominates candidates to fill vacancies in the Senate. Egli’s proposal will give organizations and clubs a say in the nominating process, while taking power away from the president and vice president. The Constitution states that “The Executive Vice President, in coordination with the WSU-

SA student body president, shall nominate candidates to fill vacancies in the Senate to be ratified by the Senate”. The change that passed unanimously in the senate comes after clubs complained that student senators nominated in the past ignored them. The new change adds six words that will make all the difference for many students, “After consulting with the organization/club, to be ratified by the Senate.”

Dinosaur bones aren’t the only fright to see at Ogden’s George S. Eccles Park this Halloween. Dinosaurs in the Dark is an annual tradition held on the week of Halloween. The walk around the park consists of prehistoric life, decorated festively for Halloween. “Everyone, from our maintenance staff to our office manager to folks and guest services, we all come together and we, you know, make this amazing plan and it’s just executed well,” Angela Horn, executive director said. The event began as a more casual carnivore carnival. After COVID-19 altered social events, Horn continues the tradition with a more controlled walk with guided lights and pathways that tell a story. “It started off as kind of this carnivore carnival, lots of games and trick or treating. And Covid happened, it kind of changed,” Horn said. “Instead of it being like, just melee all around the park, it’s very controlled. We have

a one way flow kind of story as you’re going around.” Attractions like food trucks and a playground have been brought back. “This year we’ve brought back food trucks. We have someone doing live music. It’s a great time for families to come out to the park and see something that is Halloween-themed that’s not too scary but fun,” Horn said. The annual event has brought back many families year after year. Jennifer Irvin and her children have been attending the event for the last three years. “We’ve come for the last three years and it’s just something we’ve enjoyed and we’ve tried to make it a bit of a tradition so that we can kind of see year to year all the fun stuff,” Irvin said Dinos in the Dark continues to provide fun and entertainment for families. “It is something that everyone looks forward to doing every single year,” Horn said. “So as soon as we’re done with this event, we already start planning for next year.”

Halloween is here, and what better time than now to catch up on some of this year’s horror films? 2023 has been an interesting year for horror. Sequels have been huge hits at the box office, but so have a handful of smaller indie projects from new and upcoming filmmakers. The Blackening Currently streaming on Apple TV+, “The Blackening” is the new film by director Tim Story. The movie’s advertising ran with the tagline, “We can’t all die first.” This film is a twist on the horror-comedy genre. While the jokes might not always land, there is enough to keep audiences engaged with the movie’s more satirical aspects.

Horror satires that take an introspective look at the common tropes of these films aren’t made quite as often as they were in the late ‘90s throughout the 2000s. This movie is an exciting new entry in this subgenre of horror-comedy filmmaking. Totally Killer “Totally Killer” is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime. “Totally Killer” is a time-traveling slasher, to put it in the simplest way possible. This film is quite aware and acknowledges the “Back to the Future” influence that can be felt throughout its runtime. This feature finds our protagonist, Jamie (Kiernan Shipka), traveling back to the ‘80s in hopes of preventing a slasher who has resurfaced from the shadows and kills her mom. This new film pays tribute to the classic slasher films that dominated horror through-

out the 1980s. While the end of the film can come off as a bit predictable, “Totally Killer” is enjoyable enough to put on Halloween night. Sick “Sick” is a film that debuted on Peacock earlier this year after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. “Sick” is a slasher film that takes place during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The film tackles themes of isolation while mostly taking place in one location. Just three years later, it is fascinating to see how filmmakers approach making features that deal with the pandemic. The film offers a tight and claustrophobic feeling throughout. “Sick” features a truly bizarre ending that turns an otherwise fairly by-the-book slasher film into an interesting look at the pandemic and our time in quarantine. No One Will Save You While not about the pandemic, “No One Will Save You” is still a film that deals with the feeling of being isolated. This film about an alien invasion can currently be found on Hulu. What is impressive and makes this film standout amongst other films in the same vein is that there are maybe two lines of dialogue spoken throughout the entire film. “No One Will Save You” follows Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) who has a distant relationship with

her community due to events that happened in her past. Through the course of this alien invasion film, she must find closure with the mistakes of her past. The film also has one of the most chilling final sequences in a horror film this year, that feels very inline with the end of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978). Talk to Me “Talk to Me” will likely go down as A24’s horror phenomenon of the year. This new occult film is brought to us by filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, who got their start making short films on their YouTube channel “RackaRacka.” “Talk to Me” is about a group of teenagers that have found a ceramic hand that lets them communicate with the dead. Amongst the plethora of films that deal with the concept of possession in horror, this new film finds a way to stand out with a unique approach to this subgenre. “Talk to Me” includes some of the most frightening imagery that this year’s batch of horror films has to offer.

By GRACIE STEPHENSON Reporter

Founded nearly 200 years ago, Ogden is home to decades of history. Since its founding, Ogden has seen many people from all walks of life come and go, but what if some have never left the city, even after death? Do they still walk along the streets or around the buildings still standing? With as much history as Ogden has, many believe that yes, ghosts and/or spirits are present all around the area and are not hard to find. Many local legends, however, are focused on the area around Historic 25th Street and Washington Boulevard. The Bigelow Hotel first opened in 1927 and is one of Ogden’s most notorious paranormal hot spots. Since its opening the hotel has found itself the place of numerous fatalities. Many believe that the Bigelow is haunted by many guests that never checked out. Prior to the opening of the hotel, a cook fell to his death down an elevator shaft, giving the hotel its very first death. Since then an elevator attendant was stabbed to death, two men took their own lives by jumping from the

building and a widow slowly withered to her death following the passing of her husband. However, this doesn’t scratch the surface of death within the Bigelow. Many of these deaths have occurred on the 11th floor of the building, giving way to the well-known tale that floor 11 of the Bigelow is haunted. Although the Bigelow is one of Ogden’s most infamously haunted locations, many members of the staff claim to have never felt the presence of ghosts. Several employees state that in their time working for the hotel they’ve never encountered any unexplained occurrences, any uneasy feelings and never seen an entity. So, if the Bigelow is a hoax, is the notorious ghost town Ogden a fraud too? Luckily for paranormal enthusiasts, Ogden is far from lacking in metaphysical presence. The best place to look is not within the reputation-preceding establishments like Union Station or the Bigelow Hotel, it’s in local businesses located around downtown Ogden. Less than a century after Ogden’s founding, legislation surrounding the prohibition of alcohol was passed. Following the ban of alcohol in the city, tunnels were built underneath

the streets of what is now downtown Ogden. These tunnels spanned beneath the businesses with entrances found in basements of brothels and prostitution houses. Although these tunnels are boarded up now, it was a different story 20 years ago. One of the old tunnel entrances can be found in the basement of Masterpiece Images. One staff member, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims to have never felt any unnerving presence or seen a ghost in her time working there. However, the same cannot be said for her sister. The anonymous Masterpiece Images employee said that her sister used to work in the same building years ago, before the tunnel was boarded up, and she has often felt a different type of presence and feelings of unease during her time there. Along the same side of Washington Boulevard, Weber State University’s very own WSU Downtown is also reportedly haunted. Sydney Pace, WSU senior and WSU Downtown employee, said that there are unexplained occurrences happening within the store. On one account Pace recalls an unexplain-

able event that left her reasonably uneasy. “One night me and my friends were here past midnight and we heard this loud noise, almost like someone threw a chair across the room upstairs. As soon as it happened we got a gross feeling and chills,” Pace said. Legacy Tattoo on 25th Street is far from exempt from ghostly activity. One employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, recounts many times they’ve heard weird noises upstairs or times the doors have unexplainably slammed shut. One experience left the employee feeling particularly afraid. One morning they were upstairs sweeping when they reached a certain area of the room and it felt like they hit a hot wall. They were left feeling sick, uneasy and full of goosebumps. They ran downstairs to grab another employee and when their coworker stopped in the exact same spot that they did and described feeling the same feelings, they knew they were in the presence of a paranormal entity. Peery’s Egyptian Theatre is another one of Ogden’s more infamous paranormal locations and many employees have experienced

strange and unexplainable activities. Braun Pacheco works in the box office at the Egyptian Theatre and explains that there have been several deaths in the theater, the most recent being of a construction worker’s daughter. The construction worker was working on the remodel in the 90s high above the mezzanine when his daughter, whom he had brought to work that day, fell to her death. Since her untimely death the amount of unexplained activity has seemed to increase. “I’ve had random toilets flush when no one is around, or the lights will flick on when no one’s there and people will swear they just turned them off. Sometimes the lights will change or the doors will shut,” Pacheco said. Owner of the now closed Mojo’s Music Venue, Ron Atencio, had his fair share of paranormal encounters as well. The scariest hap-

pened to a few of his employees when they were bit by a ghost they called Emma. “She would bite people. I had two people get bit by her downstairs. One got bitten on both sides of the neck, and there were bite marks to prove it,” Atencio said. Although many of the ghosts Atencio encountered were friendly and mischievous, his building harbored a less friendly ghost as well. On one account Atencio recalls a friend of his who provoked the ghost of a prostitute by calling her derogatory names being left with scratches deep enough to break skin all over his back. Perhaps the hottest paranormal spot in all of Ogden is Two-Bit Street Cafe. Most employees there have felt, and even seen, a ghost. Andrew Shorts describes the establishment as being “rich with paranormal activity.”

It found its origin as a general store and mercantile in the 1880s. Throughout time it’s evolved and changed in purpose. At one point it became a spot that was frequented by Al Capone and his two large bodyguards for poker games. Shorts, a self pronounced skeptic, conducts a small history tour of the cafe and recounts three separate occasions that individuals have encountered the ghosts of the bodyguards in the Capone room. “Before I even get to talk about ghosts or the bodyguards, I’ve had people go white as a sheet, goosebumps on their arms, go ‘This is a really cool story, but there’s two really looming, intense presences standing behind you right now, could you finish this story in the main room?’” Shorts said. Penny Allred-Dayley, owner of Two Bit Street Cafe, has had more paranormal en-

counters than she can even recall. Her first experience happened just shortly after she purchased the building. It was December and a small dusting of snow covered the sidewalks outside. Allred was the only person in the cafe at the time when she saw an old man walking on the sidewalk just outside the window. “I see this little old man in a tweed coat and a bowler hat very slowly walk past the front door. I got up, opened the front door to see if I could see where he went, and the street was deader than a doornail. I look out and he’s gone, I look down and there were no footprints in the snow,” Allred said.

The Texas Rangers are heading to the World Series, making this their third World Series appearance in franchise history. The last World Series the Texas Rangers were in was against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011. The Rangers lost to the Cardinals. The Arizona Diamondbacks are heading to the World Series for the first time in 22 years. In the 2001 World Series, the Dia-

The first two games of the 2023 World Series have provided baseball fans with a thrilling spectacle of skill and determination. In the first game, the Texas Rangers narrowly edged out the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a walk-off home run from Adolis García in the 11th inning securing a dramatic 6–5 victory. However, the Diamondbacks came back strong in the second game, winning with a resounding 9–1 victory to even the series. The action now shifts to Arizona for the third game, where the anticipation is at its peak. With both teams showcasing their strength and resilience, it’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top in the pivotal third game, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable seven-game World Series showdown.

On Oct. 26, Weber State University’s second annual Human Trafficking Symposium took place in the Shepherd Union Ballrooms from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The featured keynote speakers were Elizabeth Smart, Lauren Book and Ron Book. Elizabeth Smart is known to residents of Utah as being a champion for abuse, trafficking and trauma after her kidnapping at such an early age in the early 2000s. She spoke regarding her experiences and the symposium’s mission to bring awareness to these issues. A representative of the Utah Attorney General’s office spoke next on what they do to combat human trafficking in Utah. They discussed the methods they use to find perpetrators in cases of exploitation and trafficking.

Utah Detective Kimberly Burton and her K-9 named Flash, who is specifically trained to target electronic storage detection. Dogs like Flash were instrumental in exposing Subway spokesman Jared Folger’s involvement in child sex crimes. At the midpoint of the symposium, community partner Wendy Jensen-Nicholls acknowledged the potentially triggering nature of the subject matter and invited anyone who was triggered by presentations to step outside. The next speakers were Florida State Sen. Lauren Book and her father, Ron Book, as they spoke about their work in sex trafficking advocacy. At a young age, Lauren Book was trafficked and sexually abused by her nanny. Book talked about grooming, the process a predator will take to gain the trust of victims.

“At first, it was small things like letting me ride in the front seat and having an extra snack after dinnertime,” Lauren Book said. “Gradually, it became more overt things like getting a candy on her tongue with my tongue.” The Books explained their organization, Lauren’s Kids, has a curriculum for parents to teach children about the dangers of sexual predators. Ron Book noted that even though Lauren Book and Smart are survivors of childhood sex trafficking they still deal with trauma related to their individual experiences on a daily basis. After a lunch break, several Utah survivors participated in a panel discussion with the attendees and the Attorney General and Sheriff’s Offices. One of these survivors, Julie Whitehead,

was trafficked in Layton when she was 30 years old. She wrote about her experience in her book “Shadowed,” with a foreword by Smart. “Through healing and therapy, I was able to acknowledge my experience,” Whitehead said. “Awareness needs to be brought to this state. Many people just don’t think it happens.” Though the topic of trafficking is hard to acknowledge, Nicholls is grateful to WSU for being such an advocate for the work it’s been doing in spreading awareness and providing resources. “We are so grateful to Weber State for partnering with us on this,” Nicholls said. “Brad [Mortensen] really pushed for it to happen last year, and it’s been incredible for it to happen again this year. It’s been a really great partnership.”
