Weber State University isn’t just a place to get your undergraduate degree. With over 20 graduate programs, WSU allows for students to continue their education at the university through master’s, doctorate and other post-graduate programs.

Programs range from criminal justice, electrical engineering, education and the new Physician Assistant program, WSU provides a wide range for graduates from WSU or any other college graduate to choose from. Many fields at WSU offer an advanced degree with multiple emphases for students to focus on.

Graduate programs at WSU include faculty from a wide variety of backgrounds, providing valuable resources for students trying to figure out where to begin their careers. The Systems Engineering program has faculty backgrounds in aerospace and defense, manufacturing, mechanics, business intelligence and data, biomedical, chemical and advanced design.

Some WSU graduate programs offer state-specific curriculums that are valuable to students looking to work in the Ogden com-

munity. The Master of Social Work program offers a curriculum with a focus on “clinical practice skills relevant to Utah’s growing Latinx population,” according to WSU’s Master of Social Work program webpage.

WSU also offers six different health-related graduate programs: Health Administration, Nursing, Nursing Practice, Physician Assistant, Radiologic Sciences and Respiratory Therapy.

One of WSU’s more celebrated master’s programs is Nursing. The nursing graduate program ranked among the best last year according to EduMed, Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workforce, U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review.

The Nurse Educator program and Nursing Leadership and Management three-semester programs are both completely online, making them a more flexible option for students.

WSU is currently the only school in Utah offering a Master’s of Radiologic Sciences program. BestColleges.com ranked WSU as No. 5 in the nation for graduate radiology programs, out of the 39 schools who offer advanced degrees in that field. The Master’s of Radiologic Sciences program offers three different emphases: Innovation and Improvement, Cardiac Specialist and Radiologist Assistant.

Another healthcare-focused master’s program at WSU is the Physician Assistant program. This program has ranked among the best according to multiple college review sources in previous years as recent as 2022.

The Physician Assistant program is new to WSU and comes after a law passed in Utah that allows PA’s to practice medicine without a supervising medical doctor. Utah is one of the few states to have passed a law like this. Because of the passing of this law and Utah’s lack of accessible medical care, WSU’s new PA program could be of great use to the people of Utah.

“One of the things that attracted me to this university is the strong undergraduate programs that they have in the department of the … College of Health Professions,” Sandra Stennett, director for the Physician Assistant program, said. “Right, really strong nursing program, really strong radiologic sciences, respiratory therapy, all of those areas are really strong already, and so we have a huge applicant pool to draw from people that are already in patient-care roles.”

Though most PA programs are 27 months long, WSU’s program is only 24 months long. The program currently has only 20 students per year and does not plan to expand in order to allow the students in the program to get the best possible education they can re-

ceive, especially since the program is shorter than average.

Though WSU’s healthcare-related graduate programs often take the spotlight, many of the university’s other graduate programs also turn out successful graduates. The Goddard School of Business & Economics, which offers a Master of Business Administration, boasts graduates who found work at big name companies, such as Tesla and Goldman Sachs.

The Master of Accounting program reports 99% job placement for graduates, as well as $55,000 average starting yearly salary, compared to WSU’s average yearly salary for undergraduates of $48,000.

With programs in many different fields of study and even more to come as WSU continues to grow in both undergraduate and graduate student body, WSU’s graduate programs are an option for all graduating WSU students, and students from other universities looking to expand their education.

Those interested in graduate programs can easily find ways to apply through WSU’s website. WSU academic advisors can help students interested in these programs find the right program for them.

The fifth annual LatinX Grad Ceremony is coming up at Weber State University. The LGC is a celebration of those who have been able to graduate like the commencement.

The LGC is held once a year in the spring and is for those who are graduating in spring or summer 2023 or graduated in fall 2022. This year, it will be held on April 22 from noon to 2 p.m. at Browning Center’s Austad Auditorium.

The LGC is completely bilingual and dedicated to those who identify as LatinX or Hispanic. The LGC is not an alternative to the commencement but a dedicated event to honor Latin and Hispanic cultures.

“It’s just a separate, intimate ceremony to be able to celebrate the accomplishments from students who identify as part of this community and a space for their families to celebrate their achievements,” Jacqueline Perez, an academic advisor for concurrent enrollment and president of the LGC, said. Students who wish to participate must have applied to graduate, be eligible to participate in commencement activities, be graduating during one of the three semesters that the LGC is for and attend all meetings and the rehearsal.

During the LGC, there will be cultural performances and student speakers. The student speakers will be chosen from the participants.

“These students are able to celebrate the way they want to,” Perez said. “We don’t

have a dress code, we don’t make them wear their cap and gown; that’s optional. They can wear cultural attire, you’re able to see a little bit more of where they came from.”

This ceremony is not only important for the student, but also for the parents who only speak their native language.

“I think it’s very important that their family also is able to interact within the graduation and understand the ceremony, which is like, for example, if you’re a native speaker, or you have parents who only speak your native language, a lot of the times, they don’t understand the ceremonies in English,” Perez said. “Whereas in this, the whole time, they understand the entire ceremony. They interact — you can see it in their faces how happy and excited they get that there is something offered for them. In that sense, it’s not just an accomplishment for the students, it’s an accomplishment for the families as well.”

Students who choose to participate will be given a stole they can wear during commencement, a certificate and 30 seconds to speak and address family and friends in their native tongue. Students don’t have to speak if they don’t want to.

In the past, The turnout counting participants and those just attending was between 300 and 400. Perez hopes to see at least 500 attendees. This year, 145 graduating students signed up.

The LGC is open to all staff and students who would like to attend regardless of ethnicity. The application for those who wish to participate is located on the LGC website.

Graduation at Weber State University is quickly approaching. A great way to celebrate this honorable achievement is by attending the 2023 Senior Send-Off hosted by the Student Involvement & Leadership and the Alumni Association.

The Senior Send-Off is an event for Weber State seniors who are graduating with their bachelor’s degree. This year’s Senior SendOff will be held in the Outdoor Adventure & Welcome Center located on the south side of campus on April 20.

Senior Send-Off is a great way for graduating students to celebrate the work they have done at Weber State with their fellow students.

“We have done this for a couple of years now,” Sara Triplett, coordinator for Student Programming at WSU, said. “We started with just the gift baskets during COVID, and then last year, we incorporated the party. This year, we are doing the party and the gift baskets.”

Triplett said the gift baskets change year to year. This year, the gift baskets have more merchandise and gifts than they’ve had in the previous few years.

“There are some things that are kind of constantly the same, but the gift bag has always got a little bit of variety to it,” Triplett said. “The food will be different. In general, the themes and the ideas kind of stay the same, but the pieces are sometimes different.”

The future of Senior Send-Off hopes to

grow in both what the gift baskets have to offer as well as what is offered at the event.

Triplett said that the limited number of gift baskets that are given out will likely stay the same, but the contents of those baskets will continue to change. The current number of gift baskets that are being given away is limited to 100.

Triplett recommends non-graduating students to keep an eye out for this event when they near graduation for the chance to win one of these gift baskets and the opportunity to attend the Senior Send-Off reception.

If students have any questions, they are advised to contact the Student Involvement & Leadership center in the Shepherd Union Building.

Facing Portland State University for their first home games of the season at the Wildcat Softball Field, Weber State University’s softball team won one of their three matchups against the Vikings on April 8 and 9.

Weber State started out the first game of the weekend on top, scoring twice in the first inning. Down by 1 point, the Vikings had six runs in the fourth inning, making the score 8–3.

After scoring in both the fourth and the fifth, the Wildcats were down by only one. Portland State was then able to score three runs during the top of the sixth, the last points of the game. The Vikings ended up winning 12–8.

In the second game, Weber State catcher Mika Chong got the scoring going early, hitting a home run toward the Ice Sheet. Both teams were shut out in the second inning. Things started to pick up during the third. Viking catcher Paetynn Lopez hit an RBI single to right field to bring home infielder Olivia Dean. A single from catcher Trinity Holden then brought home catcher Bailee Noland to give Portland State a 2–1 lead. Putting another one over the fence, Chong hit another home run with infielder McKell McCuistion on base, giving Weber State the lead back.

The fourth inning was the difference in this game. Portland State scored three unanswered runs to go up 5–3. Looking to close the gap, Chong hit another home run

in the sixth inning, breaking a school record and becoming the third player in Big Sky history to hit three home runs in a game.

Able to fend off a comeback, the Vikings didn’t allow the Wildcats to score again, even bringing in a run of their own. The final score was 6–4.

Portland State started the last game of the weekend off strong, going up by one as Noland brought home Dean for an RBI. The Wildcats responded during their half of the inning as outfielder KC Whiting hit a home run to tie the game.

Outfielder Logan Riggenbach gave Portland State the lead in the third inning by bringing home Lopez on an RBI double. While Weber State failed to respond in their half of the third, pitcher Brooke Hatfield

and the defense held Portland State scoreless for the rest of the game.

Up to bat in the fourth inning, infielder Sarah Ruhl hit an RBI double to bring home catcher Riley Whalen and Whiting. During the fifth, Chong singled to center field and brought home outfielder Victoria Rey for the final points of the game, solidifying the score at 4–2.

This series marked the first time since 2018 that Weber State has lost a series to a conference opponent.

The Wildcats will face the University of Utah on April 11 in Salt Lake City at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.

After having the first spring game against Idaho State canceled due to the snow, Weber State University’s men’s baseball club traveled to Boise to face off against Boise State University. The Wildcats won one of the three games they played against the Broncos.

“Heading up to Boise, I was excited to see our players compete against a higher level of competition and show what we were really made of,” Club president Nicholas Garcia said.

Weber State played two seven-inning games and won one nine-inning game 6–3. Pitcher Jaxon Hill pitched eight innings, holding Boise State to three runs. Third baseman Esteban Romero led Weber State’s offense with

two RBIs and went 3–4 in the batting rotation.

In the 2021-22 season, the team had a 3–12 conference record and a 4–12 overall record. Keeping four of their players from last season, the Wildcats added nine players: outfielder Brock Holmes, outfielder Hunter Swalberg, shortstop Jackson Hoffman, pitcher Jaxon Hill, first baseman Bryson Hales and pitcher Christian Espinosa.

“Everything’s better when you’re winning,” Garcia said. “We already have a total of more wins and more success compared to last year, and it’s awesome to see the progress with this baseball team.”

Before the start of their 2023 spring season, Weber State played in a Spring Tournament in Henderson, Nevada. They

competed against teams like San Diego State University, The Channel Islands and St. Mary’s University. The team finished with a 1–2 record.

“I definitely feel like we have more team chemistry this year rather than last year,” Garcia said. “We’ve had nine new players on top of our four returning players, and when you watch our chemistry, it looks like we’ve been playing together for years, but really, it’s only been a couple of months.”

Heading to Lindquist Field, the Ogden Raptors’ stadium, the Wildcats will face off against Utah State University on April 22 and 23. With field lights and a professional environment, Weber State plays most of their home games from Lindquist Field.

“It gives us some energy,

especially when a larger baseball organization like that recognizes us not only as a baseball team but being Ogden’s only collegiate baseball organization,” Garcia said. “It’s more than a group of guys playing baseball.”

The Wildcats will hit the road to take on the University of Montana on April 16 and 17. The Grizzlies are currently at last place in the Northern Pacific East with a 0–6 conference record.

Después de la cancelación del primer partido de la primavera contra la universidad Idaho State debido a la nieve, el club de béisbol de la universidad Weber State viajó a Boise para jugar contra

la universidad Boise State.

Weber State University’s chapter of the Utah Women in Higher Education Network participated in a state-wide conference held at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. UWHEN aims to promote and build strong professional networks for women in higher education.

Teri Bladen, former chair of UWHEN and current WSU director of campus recreation, was honored with the Distinguished Leader Award at the conference on April 7. Bladen was nominated by colleagues and then voted on by the state board to be awarded.

“I’m doing something that I think is very important and that I love,” Bladen said, “Just being involved with this network and trying to further women’s initiatives.”

Bladen said she didn’t expect the award and is grateful for the recognition.

UWHEN is modeled after and supports the American Council on Education Women’s Network. There are 52 networks nationwide, with one in each state, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

The six ideals of the network are identifying, developing, encouraging, advancing, linking and supporting women in higher education.

“It’s a great opportunity to connect not

just with Weber State, but with people all over that share similar values and goals,” Stephanie Speicher, past-president of the chapter and WSU digital fluency faculty in residence, said.

Weber State is one of four campus chapters in Utah. The other chapters are located at Utah Technical University, Salt Lake Community College and Southern Utah University, as listed on the UWHEN website. Universities can be members and not have an official chapter.

WSU’s chapter has its own set of bylaws that align with the state and national goals. The network’s page on Weber.edu reads, “Our chapter advocates for an inclusive climate that shapes the institutional and public agenda for higher education.”

Mercedes Ziegler, chapter marketing and research coordinator and WSU’s violence prevention coordinator, said that the chapter is striving to promote diversity that reflects the WSU community.

“We are aware that we need more diversity in UWHEN,” Ziegler said, “and we do acknowledge the experiences of all of the different intersections of identity that occur in women in higher education.”

Individuals who identify as women are the focus of the network, but everyone is welcome in participating with UWHEN.

“Regardless of how you identify, everyone

is welcome in our events,” Speicher said. At past conferences, there have been workshops specifically to help men and allies support women in higher education. Speicher and Bladen commended WSU President Brad Mortensen for his support of UWHEN. Mortensen will often go to and participate in events, “And that speaks volumes,” Speicher said.

“I know President Brad Mortensen is a huge supporter of the Weber state chapter,” Bladen said. “When I became the state chair, it was with the blessing from Brad.”

Ziegler said that as a young girl, she dreamed of an opportunity like this.

“Being surrounded by this wealth of experience and expertise and knowledge … we all kind of fought our way through what it is to be a woman in any kind of workplace or academic setting,” Ziegler said. “We’ve overcome those barriers, and we’re here and we’re together doing all of these wonderful things.”

For more information go to weber.edu/ uwhen. Specifics about future events will be posted on the university’s announcement page.

The HNRS 3900 “What were you wearing?” is a brand-new course in WSU’s catalog that aims to address questions that are often asked of victims of sexual violence.

“What did you have to drink?” and “Were you flirting with him?” are some questions cited as being common responses to those who open up about their experiences with sexual violence. This course aims to push students away from the mindset that a victim deserved what they got or brought the violence upon themselves.

The objective is to dispel the notion that a victim of sexual assault invites their

attacker through their choices in things like how much they were drinking, if they were flirting with their attacker or if they were dressed a certain way.

Addressing a victim of sexual assault through these lines of questioning implies that the burden of fault lands on the victim, not the attacker. Aptly, these lines of inquiry have been coined “rape myths.”

The students in HNRS 3900 aim to do their part in refuting these myths and raising awareness among students about how to appropriately approach a victim of sexual violence.

“In Utah, ‘What were you wearing?’ definitely applies,” Danielle Husberg, WSU student taking HNRS 3900, said when asked about prevailing rape myths in Utah.

“The question implies that if a woman is

dressed a certain way she’s inviting sexual assault upon herself.”

Husberg, along with her classmates in the HNRS 3900 class, will be doing their part to discredit the “What were you wearing?” myth by organizing an exhibition that will display recreations of outfits worn by sexual assault victims along with written testimonies of their traumatic experiences.

The exhibition, which is set to take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Lindquist Hall on April 12, is designed to demonstrate how the clothes worn by victims of sexual violence during the time of their assault are just that — clothes, not invitations to be sexually assaulted.

“These exhibits are powerful because they’re just everyday clothes,” Husberg said. “You walk through and you see someone’s

sweats, their evening dress, or their workout clothes, just everyday clothes that people were wearing. It’s impactful because it shows you that what happened to them had nothing to do with what they were wearing.”

The purpose of the exhibition, apart from raising awareness for victims of sexual assault, is to foster a sense of empathy in those who visit the exhibition for those who have these traumatic experiences and often don’t report them because of the risk of being confronted with these rape myths.

The students putting together the exhibition also hope they can help people understand that in cases of sexual violence, the victim shouldn’t be the one under investigation, as is often the case.

“People’s first initial reaction is to ques-

tion the victim instead of actually questioning the perpetrator,” Nate Holland, a student working on the exhibition, said. “We really want people to be inspired to create real systematic changes that would make it easier for [people] to be believed and actual actions that will alleviate their suffering.”

Currently, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting database, Utah has a rate of 55.5 rapes per 100,000 people, which stands significantly higher than the national rate of 42.6 per 100,000 people.

A recently-released report by a Utah State University-led initiative, the Utah Women and Leadership Project, noted that only 11.8% of Utah women who are sexually assaulted end up reporting the crime to law enforcement.

The students in HNRS 3900 point to a

stigma against sexual assault victims and the wide perpetuation of rape myths as the primary reasons why sexual violence is so prevalent in Utah.

The “What Were You Wearing?” exhibit is open to visitors, who will be able to view the recreated outfits and read first-hand accounts from victims of sexual violence, as well as listen to guest speakers who have been invited to WSU to talk about issues regarding sexual violence throughout the day.

As the spring 2023 semester comes to an end, Weber State University students studying within the McKay Education Building are finding themselves saying goodbye to the structure, which is set to be demolished in the beginning of May.

According to Kristin Hadley, dean of the Jerry & Vickie Moyes College of Education, many of the faculty in the McKay building started the spring semester by having their students do projects on the walls. These projects consist of the students writing a

quote, or something that means something to them and then writing their signature as a way to say goodbye.

Faculty have supported students drawing on the walls but must be associated with the College of Education and have faculty permission before doing so, according to Hadley.

“I think for students who have spent so much time, so many semesters in these classrooms, to kind of do it as a goodbye to the building, I think this is a great thing,” Hadley said when asked about how she feels about students writing on the walls of the McKay building. “That is why we want to have it be for the students who have spent

the time in these classrooms.”

WSU student Benjamin Ess is an English secondary education major who had an essay he was originally going to present at the National Undergraduate Literature Conference held at Weber State University. Because he did not have the chance to present at the conference, Ess decided to write the essay on the walls of the building.

“For me, I get to self-publish on a wall,” Ess said. “I’m 38 years old, and I’ve been told my whole life don’t draw on the wall. When the building is torn down, my work gets to go down, it’s in the dust, it gets buried, it gets to become part of Weber State University, so I get to contribute something

more of myself to the university.”

Inspired by famous poets Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman and American novelist David Foster Wallace, Ess’s project consists of 600 words and took over two hours of writing with a sharpie marker on the third floor wall of the McKay building to finish.

College can be a lonely place. You have all this freedom, but you’re not really sure what to do with it. You’re trying to become your own person and grow as an adult, while still trying to figure out how to make friends.

Making friends is something I’ve always struggled with, being an overly-independent child and an introvert. I never went out of my way to talk to someone or introduce myself, and I would rather die than be the center of attention.

Previous graduates and all of my professors told me that college is the most enjoyable when you choose to be

involved. I chose — to ignore that advice. I told myself I was busy and had other things to worry about. It’s not a requirement to make friends, and I could finish my degree without being involved on campus. That is, until I couldn’t.

My advisor, Jean Norman, told me that to graduate with a multimedia journalism emphasis, I needed to write for The Signpost. I put off social interaction on campus for as long as possible, and then I had to do what I convinced myself I would never do: I had to actively get involved with a club/ organization.

I was terrified, and quite frankly a little annoyed, that I had to join this club that I didn’t know much about and spend my spare time with these people I’ve never met.

But damn, I was so wrong about being involved on campus.

I found myself really enjoying the meetings and making friends with the editors. I was excited to spend more time at school and be involved on campus.

Every day, I fell more in love with journalism, and college became less of a chore and more of an opportunity. Because of The Signpost, I’ve gotten opportunities I never would have thought possible.

I’ve been to media conferences in Long Beach; Washington, D.C.; Las Vegas and San Francisco. I’ve talked to journalists from all over the country and learned from award-winning writers. Every time I step into our little newsroom, I’m inspired to be the best journalist I can be.

Not only that, but I’ve made friends that

have impacted my life forever. I found a community that supports me like no other and understands my frustrations and fears.

Going out of my comfort zone and finding community on campus was the best decision I have ever made. Whatever you are passionate about, find others who are passionate about the same thing. There really is no better place than a college campus.

I’m so incredibly grateful for everyone I’ve met through The Signpost and the experiences we’ve shared. I’m also so incredibly grateful for Jean, she pushed me out of my comfort zone and believed in me from day one. Thank you, Jean, for everything you’ve done for me and other future journalists.

STORY AND PHOTO Columnist Jean Norman and Alexandrea Bonilla at the pier in Annapolis, Maryland, in October of 2022.

When I started really getting serious about my higher education, I had no clue what I was getting into. By coming back to earn my degree, I’ve found that no matter what circumstances I found myself in as a student, there were always helpful, intelligent and insightful faculty and staff to get me to graduation.

It’s stressful being a student, and looking back, I’d say I have had at least one stress-fueled breakdown per semester. I would like to thank everyone who helped me through those times.

I think highly of The Lindquist College of Arts and Humanities faculty and staff. I think highly of the foreign language depart-

ment. I even think highly of certain folks in the math department. Now, I never thought I would write that with such a degree of meaning infused in each syllable.

I like math now more than I ever have. In two months, I went from hating math desperately to enjoying certain aspects of math. I would say that the photography department is top-notch. There’s a lot I find suitable as farewell recollections, still I would highlight the quality of people at WSU.

I think that the resources that WSU has to offer its student body are only half of the equation. It has been my experience that the caliber of staff and faculty are the factors which establish WSU.

One major contributing aspect to my being able to finally earn my degree was

being involved with clubs and organizations on campus, specifically The Signpost. It’s always been a comfortable space on campus with all differing types of peers. Had I not been involved with The Signpost, I would have felt like I was attending a “commuter school.”

I can say with confidence I don’t think I would have gained from my time in pursuing a higher education, like I have at WSU, had I not been involved with something on-campus.

One suggestion I would have to any new student at WSU is to get involved with on-campus clubs and organizations, anyway you can. Start finding out how the school can work for you. WSU is designed to specifically build student success through student experience. There are so many ways to get

involved, and I wish I would have made more of my own time at the university.

At any rate, it is those people who I’ve taken classes from, peers, faculty and staff who have been supportive in keeping me going, especially during the most challenging times when carving a “C” onto the mountain of schoolwork seemed beyond doable.

It seems like everywhere one looks on campus, there are resources to help or to simply take advantage of during one’s time as a student. I am going to miss the wellspring of opportunities that WSU provides its students.

As far as I am concerned, it’s best to find ways to make being a student work for you and there are no shortage of opportunities to do that at WSU.

In the least dramatic way possible, I have dreaded writing this column for as long as I have known it existed. I have found comfort in writing game coverage and athlete features and avoided columns at all costs. However, I’ll put my own feelings aside and try to get one point across: Take the leap.

I started college as a naive 18-year-old who just left home and thought I wanted to be a school guidance counselor. I did what I thought I was supposed to do: I went to college. Six years later, and a few breaks in between, I am graduating with a degree in PR and Advertising and am enrolled in the Masters of Professional Communication

program at Weber State University.

Finishing up my freshman year of college I was depressed, hated my sociology classes and didn’t even know if college was the move for me. After a painful year and a half of classes, I decided to listen to myself for the first time and take a break. This was the best thing I have ever done for myself. I found myself making friends — like, actual good friends — and one thing led to another, and I submitted an application for a sports reporter position at The Signpost. I had a few connections at the time and figured it wouldn’t hurt to surround myself with people I liked for my first semester back.

I had never heard of The Signpost, nor

did I ever think that journalism would make its way into my life. The only thing that gave me a sliver of confidence was my love of sports.

Taking that break and then applying for a position snowballed into what is allowing me to walk across the stage at graduation. No matter the size of the school you go to or how invested your advisor is in your success, the support you receive from the students and faculty that are involved in the same organizations as you is unmatched.

Being able to surround myself with fellow communication majors has given me some of my closest friends in the classroom and out in the real world. I found it comforting to know that in any class I took

for my degree, I would almost always see a familiar face from the paper. It gave me a community and I didn’t even realize it. It led me to opportunities to write for other news organizations as well as my current internship.

This isn’t a sign to join The Signpost; this is your sign to take the leap and try something new while in college. The opportunity to move up in The Signpost has helped me pay for my education and made a degree seem possible, it gave me friends, and it gave me the confidence to believe in myself.

Columnist Emily Miller, copy editor at The Signpost, posing for graduation photos. KADE SCHWEITZER Emily Miller standing in front of the “W” rock at Weber State Univerity. Kade Schweitzer Kade Schweitzer

When I first enrolled, I looked at Weber State University as just a path to a degree. I didn’t want to join a fraternity or club, nor did I have any school spirit. I went through high school the same way and didn’t see a need to change.

I can’t express how grateful I am that I didn’t follow my initial plan. While at Weber State, I’ve been able to become a sports journalist, travel for The Signpost and gain valuable experiences that enhanced my classroom abilities.

Covering sports, I’ve found that many teams follow a model of success. For those starting college or looking for help, here’s what I think it takes to win the Wildcat way.

The importance of passion

As far as professional leagues like the NFL, NBA and MLB are concerned, I can hold my own during any intense debate or trivia contest. That said, when I started writing for The Signpost, my knowledge about sports at Weber State University was practically limited to the Portland Trail Blazers superstar point guard Damian Lillard, who’s a former Wildcat.

Becoming the assistant sports desk editor in 2022, I took every opportunity I could to learn more about Weber State sports. I went to games as often as I could and met as

many people as possible. It was also around then that I started appearing on Weber State Weekly, a podcast dedicated to Wildcat sports.

It was a lot of work, and what got me through it was the love I developed for Weber State’s teams. When grabbing information and interviews for every story I wrote, I geeked out a lot. It’s one of the reasons I teared up on the drive home after covering my last game at the Dee Events Center on February 27.

For those choosing their major or thinking about their career, it’s important to consider how much you’d like your passion to play in your life. Enjoyment is often what sets the achievers apart from the unmotivated.

what that response meant. Players and former Wildcat head coach Jay Hill talked about how involved the team was in the film room during the 2022 season. Many players said the team treated every game like their first of the season, and that it was their job to come out with a 1–0 record.

Their example helped me understand something: Successful players and coaches treat every opponent like they’re the most important. They’ve found their most effective way to prepare, and they follow that model.

I’d never had to write like a journalist before. I felt behind and even thought about switching majors.

Before calling my advisor to start that process, I decided to just try my best and see where it went. Jean played an intricate role in that effort. She met with me when I had questions and gave me writing advice.

Midway through the course, I still felt like one of the weaker journalists in the room. Around that time, Jean introduced me to then-sports desk editor Emily Miller. It was at that time that I started doing game coverages for The Signpost.

Find an optimal

preparation

routine I’ve interviewed a lot of coaches and players before big games and there’s one question I frequently ask: “How do you prepare for a matchup against an opponent this elite?”

Almost every time I ask this question, my interviewee will tell me that they prepare for each team the same way. At first, I found that kind of lazy. It felt like some teams should’ve required a different strategy or practice style.

It wasn’t until I started writing about the football team that I started to understand

The way a student prepares for any assignment sets a routine. I unintentionally studied for everything the same way at Weber State. While there were times I put too much effort into an assignment, I never handed in something that felt unpolished. I prioritized every assignment, and it helped me succeed in class and at The Signpost.

Find someone who believes in you

During the 2021 fall semester, I started classes for my multimedia journalism emphasis. One of those classes was COMM 3130, taught by Associate Professor Jean Norman.

Unlike many others in the course, I had no idea what The Signpost was, nor was I a published journalist.

I started to lack confidence in my abilities. While I’ve always done well writing essays,

Emily also helped me start to write more like a journalist. At the end of that semester, she asked me to be her assistant editor. After showing me the ropes, Emily started to trust me as well, and we became an effective team.

The confidence and support Jean and Emily gave me was critical to my success at Weber State. Some of the most brilliant people in the country are Wildcats, and their knowledge isn’t just tied to their area of expertise. If you put in the work, they’ll lead you to incredible opportunities.

I’m originally from California, so moving to Utah was a real culture shock. My whole life, I’ve never lived in snow. California pretty much has one season and the saying “The sun is always shining” is pretty much true. In Utah, you get to experience all four seasons.

Spending four years out here in Utah with no family, you have to find your people. I did that when I joined The Signpost. Even though I have friends on campus outside of The Signpost, the friends I have within it feel like family. Every incoming or current student at Weber State that is not

from Utah, I think you should know that once you find people you connect with, you won’t feel that alone.

Finding people that you share interests with is the first step to making long-life friends. I want to thank Emily Miller and Simon Mortensen personally for welcoming me into The Signpost when I first joined. Without them, I don’t know how my experience would have been, but they made it fun and memorable.

Emily, I will remember the games we attended on our trips to Weinersnitchelz. Simon, what I will remember the most is experiencing NBA All-Star Weekend with you and seeing Mac McClung go crazy in the dunk contest. I would also like to thank

everyone I worked with at the Signpost that welcomed me and made it feel like home. Lastly, I would like to thank our professor Jean Norman for pushing me to do things outside my comfort zone and opening a whole new world. When we went to the National Association of Black Journalists conference, it was one of the most exhilarating times of my life. I appreciate everything you’ve done for me and won’t take it for granted. I can’t wait to work with you this summer.

As an upcoming graduate, I can confidently say that I have learned a lot throughout the years at Weber. It won’t feel real until I’m holding that hard-earned piece of paper. Even then, graduation can feel like a dream. But it’s true, and it means no more classes. While another degree is always an option, I’m content with my current achievements.

Throughout my time at Weber, I’ve learned where to go for the best food, how to save money while getting said food, tricks to save money on textbooks, and even how to navigate the campus without getting lost. Sure, most of these things have to do with how to save money, but that’s just something we students have to learn, right?

There’s a saying that is overused, but I like to live by it: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” It certainly got tough over the years, especially as I got into some upper-level classes. In particular, my upper-level math classes were a challenge. Math has never been my strong suit, but looking back and knowing that I went all the way up to Calculus feels pretty good.

I didn’t start out with a Digital Media degree and a minor in Creative Writing. I was in Computer Science, but what changed my mind was The Signpost. I discovered that not only do I love writing with all my heart, but the design aspect of the newspaper fascinated me.

The Signpost is probably something I’m go-

ing to miss the most. I’m an introvert at heart. When I’m in an environment for the first time, I am really shy and quiet. But everyone in The Signpost quickly broke that shell. I have so many great memories with you guys. Even though I wasn’t on for long, it feels like I have been a part of The Signpost for years. It felt like a family, and the friends that I made, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been able to meet otherwise. I definitely will not forget them.

Being a writer on the culture desk specifically has been an adventure. I got to go to places and speak to people that I wouldn’t have spoken to or visited otherwise. The places and people I have gotten the honor to talk to because of The Signpost will definitely stick with me.

For several articles, I had to break through my uncertainty of talking to people I have never met before. This not only gave me new friends, but a chance to give a voice to the voiceless, so to speak. It always makes my day to see someone light up when I tell them I am from The Signpost and I would like to interview them.

It’s such a rush to see how people react to you wanting to tell their stories. Even when I leave at the end of this semester, I hope to carry that on in my future career. Writing stories and animating may be a different world altogether, but the feelings and lessons I believe will stay the same.

So to end this, I refuse to say goodbye. Instead, I will say see you later.
