LETTER FROM PRESIDENT MORTENSEN
APRIL 14, 2020
Dear Spring 2020 Graduates, One of the iconic photographs from the annals of Weber State’s history is a photo of students paying their tuition with fruit, vegetables, and livestock during the Great Depression. Faculty and staff accepted these in lieu of their typical monetary salaries. Despite the extraordinary strife of their day, the Weber State family rallied together, supported each other, and demonstrated the fortitude to persist through the challenges. Images of your faces will be held with that same admiration. Against all odds, the Class of 2020 persisted. You did not allow the mountain of COVID-19 to stop your climb; you kept climbing and made it to the top. You are a graduate! Congratulations! Admittedly, the pursuit was not easy. A mid-semester switch to 100% virtual courses with a three-day transition is unprecedented. Like the The Köln Concert by Keith Jarret, which is the best-selling solo album in jazz history and the best-selling piano album of all time, circumstances required you to perform in less than ideal circumstances. Instead of a concert grand piano, Jarret was forced to perform on a worn, out-of-tune baby grand piano. With the help of a piano tuner and encouragement from the producer, he delivered an improvisational virtuoso performance. Like the piano tuner, our Weber State faculty have worked to make the best learning circumstances available for you in an online environment. Like the producer, our Weber State staff have continued to encourage you and provide support. And like Keith Jarret, you went to a new level and completed this semester, and your education, in virtuoso style. Effectively, you, and your peers who remain students, helped confirm that Weber State can take unprecedented steps to protect your health and educational pursuit simultaneously. We all learned together in this pursuit, and we will emerge stronger than ever before with even more options for student success at Weber State. When I think back to you choosing Weber State, I am grateful for that choice. Your time and contributions here pushed Weber State higher. Our future is brighter because of you. Thank you for your commitment and the support of your entire circle of friends and family. It’s no secret that my favorite day on campus is commencement. Nothing is sweeter than seeing you celebrate the triumph of your educational pursuit with family and friends. I look forward to a day, which is currently being planned, when we can join together for this celebration. Know that Purple and White will forever be yours, standing by to support you in your future endeavors. I salute you, and may endless opportunities be yours as a result of your education from Weber State University. Best, Brad L. Mortensen President

GRADUATION POSTPONED
By WESTON SLEIGHT
WSU announced the postponement of its Spring 2020 graduation ceremony on March 18.
DUE TO COVID-19 Reporter
Editor’s note: The Signpost has changed publication date of the Graduation Issue with the list of the graduate’s names from April 10 to April 14. Graduating Weber State University students who were planning to walk during Commencement on April 24 this year were notified on the evening of March 18 via an email from the President’s Office that the ceremony would be postponed until later in the year. The delay is part of an effort to protect the health of students and others in the community as the spread of COVID-19 remains a nationwide concern. “Many of us consider commencement the most important event we hold on campus,” President Brad Mortensen wrote. “I know this news is disappointing to us all, but especially our students who were looking forward to celebrating this incredible milestone at the end of this semester. We
know their families and loved ones share in the disappointment.” The email stated that Commencement may be virtual if necessary, and students will be notified as soon as possible so the graduating seniors can be acknowledged for their accomplishments. “I don’t want members of the Class of 2020 to miss out on this momentous occasion in their lives,” Mortensen said. This news was hard to take for those who were planning on walking at the commencement ceremony, especially those who are also first generation graduates. “As a first generation graduate student, hearing the news about Commencement was devastating, and now it just feels like it’s not going to happen,” Karen Valdez, a WSU senior, said. Graduation and Commencement is usually a happy occasion for students and a huge milestone in their lives. “I was looking forward to taking family pictures and saying goodbye to all the
friends that I have made while being at Weber State,” Valdez said. Valdez has an immediate and extended family who live in Arizona, and she was able to notify them about the postponement of Graduation. Though many students may feel that Graduation is over and they won’t be able to celebrate, there are ways those in the Class of 2020 still can. “Families should do something to honor their graduates, no matter where, how or when the ceremony occurs,” Allison Barlow Hess, public relations director, said. Prior to Mortensen’s email, no news had been given out on the fate of WSU’s graduation ceremony, although other universities in Utah had postponed the event. These decisions follow the current guidelines set by the CDC. “Once we went online and everything closed down, there was no news on Commencement; there was still that hope, and I never gave up,” Valdez said.
The Signpost will still publish a Graduation issue with the list of all the graduate’s names on April 14 although the ceremony is postponed. Once grades have been submitted on April 28, the rest of the graduation process will continue as normal, excluding the ceremony. Diplomas will be mailed off when degrees are processed and grades are finalized. Students can expect to receive their diplomas within around four days of April 28. “Hope is what we can hold onto. I’ve accepted it, soaked it in, and I’m ready to move on,” Valdez said. “Living through something like this is quite the experience. When a milestone like Commencement is postponed, it’s devastating to have something you’ve worked so hard for taken away.” Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

WELL-KNOWN UTAHNS By FRANCIA BENSON Asst. Section Editor

As of April 13, the Utah Government portal reports a total of 2,303 cases of coronavirus. Among those cases are politicians, businessmen and businesswomen and sports players. Robert Garff, 78, chairman of the Ken Garff Automotive and philanthropist, died on March 29 from COVID-19. He is one of the 18 people who have died from the virus in Utah. Garff’s wife also contracted the virus, and she is at home recovering. U.S senator Mitt Romney tweeted, “With profound sadness, I have learned that my friend Bob Garff has passed away from COVID-19. It breaks my heart.” Mitt Romney is self-quarantining as well
as Utah Sen. Mike Lee. They both had contact with Sen. Rand Paul, who tested positive for COVID-19. Utah Jazz players, Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell tested positive on March 11 on March 12, respectively. They were the first famous people from Utah to give a positive test at the beginning of March. They announced that they both are recovered and have received a clean bill of health. On March 18, Utah Congressman Rep. Ben McAdams announced that he tested positive for COVID-19. The Salt Lake Tribune reported that he was hospitalized but has since recovered and is back home. State Senator Luz Escamilla, D-Salt Lake City, tested positive for the virus on March 22, and she and her family have been in quarantine since.
Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz.
Escamilla sent a statement that reads, “As someone who has asthma, this is a scary diagnosis, but I am confident that I will make a full recovery.” Utah law makers were suggested to self-quarantine after having contact with Senator Escamilla. Salt Lake City Council members Darin Mano and Dan Dugan also had a positive test. The virus is spreading like wildfire throughout the country and the world at alarming rates. Globally, the virus infiltrated the Royal Palace of Britain and the Prince of Whales, Charles, and his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, have contracted it. Actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were among the first celebrities to contract COVID-19. BBC News reported that they both had recovered and are back in the
United States. The actor from the famous television show “Game of Thrones” Kristofer Hivju is one of the many celebrities who are sick with the virus. The British actor Idris Elba announced on his social media sites that he also tested positive. The famous chef Floyd Cardoz, owner of restaurants in India and New York, and who competed on “Top Chef,” died from the coronavirus, ABC reported. They are just some of the many actors, actresses, politicians, singers and writers that are infected with COVID-19. There are currently 1,872,073 cases around the globe and 116,098 deaths as of April 13. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

AN ACADEMIC
RECESSION TORI WALTZ Editor in Chief
Last Friday carried on almost exactly the same as the week before, with one exception. In the midst of my daily quarantine routine — which consists of staring at Twitter, sleeping and eating in various intervals — an email hit my inbox that I’d been eagerly anticipating. “Thank you for your interest in joining our team!” The email came from a potential employer, whom I had submitted an application to months prior. “We appreciate your patience as we work through the ambiguity that we all face right now due to COVID-19. In light of this uncertainty, we are prioritizing the care of our current team members globally. In order to do this, we have decided not to add any new team members at this time.” This type of notification has become increasingly common during my job search as a soon-to-be graduate from Weber State University. Regardless of my qualifications for a potential fulltime position, I still never seem to reach the coveted first interview. This has inevitably led me down a road of insecurity and fear. Am I doing something wrong? Did my years in higher education fail to prepare me for the one task college is meant to facili-
tate? I worry that the answer to both of these questions is no, and that my experience is simply a glimpse into what the future as a newcomer to the professional world may look like in the age of coronavirus. A month ago, college seniors were preparing to graduate into one of the best job markets the United States had seen in decades. Now, an unforeseen pandemic has placed the nation, and its economy, in a chronic state of uncertainty. COVID-19, a strain of coronavirus first discovered in 2019 in Wuhan, China, has infected 1.8 million people worldwide and killed over 112,000 people, at the time of publication. With the U.S. currently having the highest death toll and number of cases in the world, millions of Americans have been asked to do the unfathomable in a capitalist society: don’t go to work, school or out in public unless you have to. This has caused thousands of businesses to shut their doors, taking several of their employees’ jobs with them. According to a Federal Reserve estimate, nearly 50% of companies say they are somewhat likely to conduct layoffs over the next three months due to the virus, while more than 37% of firms have already instituted hiring freezes. These actions, while significant, are not the first examples of health crises’ impact on the global economy. In 2016, the flu season was estimated to cost $5.8 billion in health care and loss in productivity, while the swine flu in
2009 had an economic loss range from approximately 0.5 to 1.5% of gross domestic product in affected countries, according to Forbes. In today’s era of illness, daily economic output in the U.S. is down 29% from where it sat a month ago, according to a Moody’s Analytics report published in the Wall Street Journal. As that number continues to intensify, the anticipation of a global recession looms in the air almost as formidably as the coronavirus itself. This could not have come at a worse time for spring college graduates. As if spending the end of an academic era online wasn’t enough, now it seems that the task of finding a job after graduation may be just as difficult as it is to find toilet paper in a grocery store. However, if there’s anyone who is prepared for this kind of shift in the market, it’s the class of 2020. According to Flexjobs, remote work has grown 91% over the last decade. Given the contagious nature of the coronavirus, and the uncertainty of its duration, remote work might become the new normal. This would mean thousands of companies will be looking for fresh new faces to help make the transition online easier. Who better to do that than the guinea pigs who prevailed under the same circumstances in college? If there is one thing that these final weeks of the semester have taught me, it’s that we, as a student class, can succeed amid even the most unprecedented of events. We graduated, despite
living in a global pandemic, and will go down in history much like those before us who were unlucky enough to graduate into a recession. When the classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011 hit the job market, their prospects for employment were few and far between. However, studies show that despite their early career misfortunes, most employees from that generation tended to be happier with their positions than others who graduated before them. One reason explaining this could be the continued adversity and setbacks that recession graduates experience during their first few years in the professional world. After being forced to move back home and work in lessthan-ideal jobs, the graduates of 10 years ago developed a less narcissistic attitude in the workplace that allowed them to be more grateful for the opportunities that came their way, according to the Harvard Business Review. While this a hard truth that faces graduates today, history shows that we will eventually manage to come out on top. The economy will heal, but in the meantime, our technological savvy and ability to adapt during change will ensure our capacity to press forward. College taught us how to succeed, but living during the coronavirus conditioned us to survive.

IN THE HOT ZONE: A GROCERY WORKER DURING COVID-19 By MARISA NELSON Asst. Section Editor
close to my heart. The people we see every day are people we know, who are still trying their best to feed their families as well. We hate to tell customers they can’t get something. It hurts to see other suffering, but it also hurts to see others have so much and not give back. I, in no way, want to point fingers or judge. We are all just trying to do our best, but I think that this situation can be an eye opener for all of us. The common theme here is that we can learn some valuable lessons. One is that it is possible for all people to work together for the common good. All of us are facing these times of turmoil, and none of us know how long this will last. Working together with the people in your community right now is ever more important. We just want everyone to have a fair chance. Look for chances to give back, look for the lessons that can
be taught by being strong in times like these, and look for ways to show kindness, in a world that really needs it now. Working in retail, or any other essential job, right now is scary, and we know that you are scared as well. As someone who works in this industry all we are asking of you is to be patient and kind. Take a step back before you speak and think about all the others who are in the same situation. Each of us have a role to play in helping to slow the pandemic. Our job as grocery store workers has become even more stressful, but I am grateful for the opportunity I have to serve others, but it is not an easy place to put myself in.

I’ve worked many holidays in customer service. I’ve seen families buy two cart loads of chips and hot dogs for summer, last minute shoppers buying a full frozen turkey on Thanksgiving Day, and even working a 10-hour shift on Christmas Eve that didn’t seem to put a dent in the lines. But amid the panic that came with COVID-19, we are seeing triple the customers than any of these holidays have brought. Working at a small-town grocery store can have its unique challenges. Working customer service in general can be mind-numbing. But on March 13, our small grocery store was busier than any other Friday. As panic began to set in, people showed it. It was mind blowing to me to see so many people in our store at once. Christmas Eve was close, but the amount of food and supplies was unreal to me. Us employees began to panic too. What was going to happen? Would we be able to feed our families? Would we lose our jobs if customers cleared all the product off our shelves? So much unknown has come with COVID-19 and not just for the general public. People often ask us when we will be getting more product, but, even more now, we get questions about restocks (especially on toilet paper) and if we are hiding products in the back all while some are upset by the limited quantities of products. While all these concerns are valid, it is important for customers to think about the repercussions that fall on employees, as well as management. Our job as retail workers is to help the customers the best we can, not lie to them. In all circumstances, our goal is to answer questions and accommodate. But amid these unusual circumstances, it seems that lots of people have excuses why they should be an exception, and why they should have things over everyone else. This pandemic is real, and some people are feeling the squeeze more than others. This time is so uncertain for all of us, and NONE of us know what the next day will bring. How can we provide in-
side information to you when we don’t even have it ourselves? Almost all of my co-workers have stepped up, working longer hours trying to get product back on the shelves, and some have stayed later to help us through the crowds of people — some working 12-hour shifts. While this may not sound unusual to some, many of these people are like me going to school, some are still in high school, and some have families to take care of. To me, these people I work with really are heroes. We don’t have the choice to stay home because our job is so essential to all of you. I can’t speak for everyone, but this job for me is more than just essential. While we may not love every moment of every day, the task of helping others and serving the community is a call we willingly accept. Our job is something that I hold

PRISONER IN MY OWN HOME Columnist
Voluntary confinement in a 28 feet by 28 feet apartment can feel like a prison, but I’m afraid to leave my home. The closure of the Weber State University campus and my work has been beneficial in that I have plenty of time to complete course assignments from home. My sanity, however, is a little worse for wear. My mental health provider tells me to go about my day as usual: get up at a decent hour, make my bed, take a shower — just don’t go anywhere. Sure, this sounds easy enough, but how long can one person go without any physical human contact before you go crazy? My friend and neighbor Elizabeth Deweese, like myself, chose to stay home amid the pandemic due to underlying health conditions. Deweese suffers from Type 1 diabetes and requires an insulin pump. “I’m really scared,” Deweese said. Contracting COVID-19 is just one of the many fears plaguing my mind in these uncertain times. While my commencement ceremony is not nearly as important as people’s health,
my door — inside was spaghetti sauce, pasta and much more. Feelings of gratitude cannot begin to describe how wonderful it is to have someone help me in my time of need. Of the many takeaways to cherish from the COVID-19 pandemic, I will remember the generosity and kind acts of others, and the
selfless, courageous men and women in the medical field who choose to work for those in need of care, despite the risk involved. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

it’s difficult to accept that I will not have the opportunity to walk across a stage and receive my degree in the presence of all who have supported me. Life being what it is, and full of surprises, it has taken me 10 years to complete my bachelor’s degree. Now that graduation is 29 days away, it all seems insignificant knowing my diploma will come to me in the mail. There will be no grand recognition and no celebration with family, friends and fellow Wildcats. This is reality, a reality that becomes more surreal with each passing day. While statewide lockdowns and stayat-home orders are considered necessary measures by public health officials, the resulting ghost-town effect makes me feel as though I’m living in a movie. A movie where there is not only an absence of people going about their lives but also an absence of basic necessities. Because I was minutes behind in the trend of hoarding in response to the pandemic, I found myself without day-to-day essentials. I vow to never take toilet paper for granted again. I can only assume people’s thought processes for stockpiling are that somehow there will be an end to all consumer goods. Well, at least, that’s what it felt like to me when store after store bore empty shelves. In my search for spaghetti sauce, I found none; nor did I find tomatoes to make some with. Not that it mattered much, considering there was no pasta, nor any flour or eggs to make it from scratch. Deweese left a bag of goodies in front of

Spring brings new flowers all over the city. BRIELLE HARKER | The Signpost
Even in the hardest of times there is always something to bring you joy. For many of us, the COVID-19 pandemic brings uncertainty and anxiety. But we need to remember that joy is still all around us; we just may need to look for it. Joy can come in any shape and size. It may be a dog jumping on you and licking you, or running to get the stick that you just threw into the river. Maybe joy is watching your cat curl up on the floor in the sunlight streaming through the window. Joy can be the sight of your niece holding your finger for the first time, or your newborn holding his head up and grinning from ear to ear. Children and babies constantly bring people joy through their
chubby cheeks and toothless smiles. Joy is winter transforming into spring right before our eyes. Watch the new flowers blooming outside of your window and the birds chirping in the warm blue sky. Spring is a magical season of regrowth, so take a look and join in with the season. Joy is family. Family will always be by your side through the hard times. They know the best ways to make you laugh and to make you smile. Maybe it is playing rock paper scissors or going on a hike. Whether you are inside self quarantining or if you still have a job that you go to every day, joy will always be around. Sometimes you just have to pause what you are doing and look for it.

A FOND FAREWELL TO MY FACULTY AND FRIENDS AT WEBER STATE
FRANCISCO RUIZ Columnist
My Weber State experience started as a happy accident. In 2015, I was searching for a job after a stint with Wells Fargo. I had applied to several positions with companies in Ogden and Salt Lake. My father suggested I look for a position at Weber State, as he knew several people who worked for the university. I will admit that I scoffed at the idea. Why would I, a former BYU student and self-declared cosmopolitan, apply to work at what I saw as a glorified community college? I had no ill-will towards Weber, but it was not Utah State, the University of Utah, or BYU. I had also been working in the private sector. Why should I waste my talents in education? However, I was looking for a job and I was not getting anywhere, so I decided to access Weber’s jobs website and indiscriminately apply for several positions. I figured I would take the proverbial “throw mud at the wall and see what sticks” approach. (Several years later, I would learn in COMM 2550 that this is a terrible method for seeking employment. Thanks, Dr. Ault!) I finally got a job interview, but it was not with Weber. The accounting firm Deloitte had me visit their Salt Lake offices to interview for an administrative position. They certainly impressed me. I figured working for one of the “Big Four” auditors would present plenty of opportunity, and the offices were on the fourteenth floor of one of the shiny office towers downtown. To my surprise, they offered me the position. I accepted without hesitation. One week went by. Then two. Then three. The recruiter was very apologetic. She
explained that the end of the quarterly tax season was causing a backup in the necessary hiring approvals. I had no problem with waiting. Then I got a call from Brogan. “Are you still interested in the administrative specialist position with Radiologic Sciences?” she said. I had no idea what she was talking about. “Which company is this?” I said, rather embarrassed. She explained that it was with Weber State. I had totally forgotten. After all, more than 60 days had passed since I had applied to the Weber jobs. I figured it could not hurt, so I accepted the invitation to interview with the faculty and staff of the Department of Radiologic Sciences. I can only imagine what the faculty and staff were thinking as I did my best to answer their interview questions and pretend I had an idea about what radiology was, or how to best help students succeed academically. (I was a mediocre student at BYU.) I can honestly say that in the 45 minutes of interview time, I really did grow to like them. I felt that I would be able to fit in. A couple of days later, they offered me the position. It was hard to say no to Deloitte, but Weber presented its benefits. I really liked the Radiologic Sciences crew, and I would not have to commute to Salt Lake. Within the first few weeks of working at Weber, I repented of my previously elitist attitude. My boss and department chair, Dr. Walker, demonstrated that professors can be as pragmatic and forward-thinking as any business leader. He wanted all of us to dream big. One of the most transcendental things I witnessed was that the professors personally cared about the success of their students. The smarts and drive of my teammates in the department also inspired a sense of desiring excellence within myself. Working with students taught me how to eval-
uate my own scholarly habits. I noticed that the students who succeeded in Radiologic Sciences were the ones who were smart, but they did not act smart. Instead, they went out of their way to associate with the professors and to truly learn and understand the material. They learned with passion. If I were an employer, I would have easily hired one of these Weber State students over any BYU or U of U student in a heartbeat. My own conscience condemned me. I had gone to college, but I did the bare minimum to succeed. I had not formed any meaningful networks of professionals or friends, and this is what had made my job searching so fruitless. I figured that the best way to remedy the situation would be to learn how to learn, again. So, I enrolled in some courses at Weber State. One of the first classes I took was a general education botany class. I was very nervous because it had been some time since I had taken a university course, and being a non-traditional student, I figured I would be an old man among a bunch of fresh-faced recent high school grads. I quickly learned that I was not the only non-traditional student in the class, and I was not even the oldest student in the class. This gave me a view into the possibilities Weber State could present to folks who had a genuine desire to learn. The course’s instructor, Dr. Root did not simply recite PowerPoint slides full of facts and figures. She taught with gusto and she wanted every student to understand why we should at least be thinking about the implications of climate change. That botany class was just a sampling of the educational excellence I would experience at Weber State. Through my work on campus, I was able to participate in a study abroad trip to China, twice. On a whim, I joined the Wildcat Investors Club. I had a small stock portfolio of my own, so I was curious what other students were doing with their investments. The club’s advisor, Dr. Fan was very wel-
coming, and she made sure that I, a communication major, would feel confident surrounded by business and finance majors. She even let me tag along on a club trip to New York City. The club was a great way of using the language of business in real-world applications. Dr. Allred’s marketing class took the language of business a step further. He made it clear that we would not get by with mediocrity, and he challenged us to create our own marketing plans. Dr. Ault taught me that research can be fun, and that critical thinking is one of the best skills a person can take away from college. Professor Hess helped me to understand that I was not doing the world a favor by hiding my talents. Dr. Norman showed me that I am a solid “okay” writer and that life is more meaningful when people ask difficult questions. She still rightly believes I need to lose my rose-colored glasses for life. (It was not all positive experiences. I had a professor who made me take a test at an on-campus testing center even though I was sick with the flu.) Dr. Josephson (Dr. J!) helped me to realize that learning should be a life-long pursuit, and that I can take my education seriously without having to take myself too seriously. There are countless other people, including the friends I made in my classes, who have forever influenced me for the better. I will cherish these relationships and opportunities for growth that Weber State has provided for me. I have learned that college is much more about the journey than the destination. Thanks to the relationships I formed at Weber and the skills the faculty helped me to obtain, I now have even greater opportunities awaiting me than I did back in 2015. My choice to say “yes” to the interview with Radiologic Sciences was a happy accident, indeed. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

GOODBYE TO THE FIELD, HELLO TO THE PRESS BOX BRANDON MAY Columnist
From the moment I could walk, I was always around sports. Whether it was a ball in my hand or watching NASCAR as a newborn on the couch, it was clear what my life would consist of. Although my parents were heavily involved in athletics and the sports life, my grandma on my mom’s side likes to take the credit that she introduced me to sports from day one. We’d always spend hours in the garage or backyard playing hockey, football, base-
ball or soccer until it was time for bed. To me, sports, aren’t just something you watch on television or play on the court or field. They’re a way of life. While most people thought about dayto-day life, I thought about what college I wanted to play football at — Notre Dame or Boise State, and baseball — Texas or Florida. I thought about what I wanted my dorm room to look like and and all the cool places I would travel and play at. Sports didn’t just teach me about teamwork, it taught me about how to live life and to be the best man that I can be. After winning the high school football CIF Championship, I quickly decided that I wanted to play both football and baseball at the college level. It became less of a dream in December of 2012. Sitting in my anatomy class, my teacher got a phone call from the coach’s office, and after watching so many upper-
classman in years previous get these calls, I knew there was a coach who wanted to talk to me about coming to his school. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was sitting in the office when I walked in, and it was the start of the recruiting trail that I will never forget. In June of 2013, after two campus visits and four different university talks, I signed to play college football and baseball at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. I spent two years at Olivet and because of that experience met some of the greatest friends and memories. Through the struggles of being a college student and everyday life, sports have always been there for me, even after transferring to Weber State in the fall of 2016. It had been two years since I stepped on a diamond, but when I came to WSU I got my second chance at playing college ball.
Playing collegiate sports has brought memories and friendships that I’ll cherish forever. From playing on Saturday afternoons or under the lights on the gridiron to under the lights at Lindquist Field and in front of a rowdy, trash talking, crowd in Logan, UT, it is something I can remember forever. Memories like never ending bus rides in the Midwest where you saw miles and miles of cornfields to a walkout single and a home-run in Ogden that my dad finally got to see. Sports are a grind, but the rewards are always tremendous, and the memories and lifestyle is something I can pass down to my future generations. Although my time on the field came to an end in the spring of 2019, it’ll continue on press row or up high in the press box. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

Graduation Thoughts During COVID-19 SHARON VALVERDE VARGAS Columnist
pexels.com
I sit here on my couch, thinking about how I will be graduating in 13 days. Three years ago, I definitely didn’t see myself graduating. My life at that time was consumed with partying and wasting my time doing the wrong things. Nevertheless, I can proudly say I am happy with this accomplishment. I worked hard and pushed myself, taking 18 credits for two years straight just to graduate. I saw 2020 as being a big year for me to celebrate my accomplishments, but unfortunately, things turned upside down for many of us. So yes, there are days when I shed a few tears because I may not have that moment of feeling proud and excited to walk with my dear peers, with whom I have built amazing relationships. COVID-19 took that opportunity away. It may seem dramatic to some, but to me it was important, and that alone matters. All I can do is accept that I can’t change the situation we are living in right now. I wasn’t only excited to graduate. I was excited because, for once in my life, I was going to have my Papí watching my biggest accomplishment. He was going to be here, coming from Costa Rica, along with all my brothers. For

once, I was going to be around my whole family, sharing a moment of pure bliss. I can only imagine how beautiful it was going to be. For some, it is not a big deal and I respect that, but I’m sure I speak for a lot of students. While this situation has turned into memes and jokes surfacing on social media threads, for some it really hurts, and it’s hard to believe. I can’t help but count down the days until I graduate. It does matter. Hundreds
and hundreds of hours of studying, projects, tears, stress, giving up and continuing, mistakes, perseverance and devotion are about to come to a triumphant close. I can’t help but feel that I’m not really graduating, even though I am. My head is up though. There is something about college that you can’t help but hold dear to your heart. It’s been a beautiful experience and for that reason my plan is to return soon and pursue my master’s degree. I hope each graduate gets their mo-
ment of recognition, whether that is shared with the school, with friends or at home with loved ones. I do look forward to that, and I will be sharing this moment with my loved ones. So, let me personally say congratulations to all of the upcoming Weber State graduates. Only we know what we have gone through to get to this moment, and that deserves a lot of respect.
