WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY
TO P GR A D U A T I N G S EN I OR S The traditional Kente Cloth is a hand-woven ceremonial article of clothing originating from the country of Ghana. Kente Cloths are worn by recognized members of their communal society during important social and religious occasions. The Kente Cloth carries a more symbolical meaning than just a decorative cloth. It is a visual icon of history, philosophy, ethics, and social code of conduct that an individual strives to represent. Within the academic world, Kente Cloths have been used to recognize individuals who have developed and embodied the ideals of the organization who awards them.

BRUISED, BATTERED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN By KAYLA WINN Reporter
Most athletes in college look forward to advancing to the big time. To some, it can be the start of a bigger profile, more money or continuing to play the game they love. However, many athletes have decided to take alternative paths. Some will further their athletic careers, going pro or traveling overseas, while others will put their pads away. Former Weber State football starting center Joe Hawkins came to Ogden from Florida and majored in professional sales. He played at WSU from 2012 to 2015 and cherished the memories he made. He said the strength of the bonds of friendship he made is irreplaceable and will never be taken away from him. During Hawkins’ senior year at Weber, he broke his left pinky, tore a ligament in his left thumb, sprained his ankle, sustained a concussion and ruptured his left MCL. Hawkins also suffered a setback at Pro Day when he tore his hamstring. Hawkins is currently a high school football coach in Florida. He is looking toward a bright future with a positive mindset. “I would hope that I have settled down. I’m stable, relaxed and not stressed about the little things. I’m in my career, and I am on the right path,” Hawkins said. Justin Holliday was a wide receiver on the Wildcat football team from 2013 to 2015, eventually graduating with his bachelors degree in communications. Holliday enjoyed the relationships he made with his teammates. Even though
they may be miles apart, they still find a way to communicate every day and plan a trip at least once a year. He believes they left a solid mark on Weber as a whole. After graduating, Holliday quickly realized he had big decisions to make. He understood his maturity level needed to change to take steps forward. After a period of struggle, Holliday secured his first job. Holliday moved to El Paso, Texas, to become a high school football coach. He continues to look forward to the next step, which he refers to as “climbing the ladder.” He hopes to have a significant coaching job in five to 10 years. “I will be a Division 1 football coach, hopefully at an FBS school and, God willing, at a power 5 school making a lot of money with a beautiful family,” Holliday said. For offensive lineman Tyrone Brown, who played as a Wildcat from 2013 to 2016, he especially enjoyed traveling with his teammates and creating lifetime memories along the way. The Florida native took a liking to experiencing the Western part of the country and had never seen so many mountains. Brown experienced a shoulder surgery and two knee surgeries during his time at Weber. Once his body had gone through such wear and tear, he knew his best option was to stop playing. He moved back to Florida and is currently attending school to earn his master’s in business. “I want to be heavily involved in the entertainment industry to become a publicist or a manager for a well-known artist,”
B
Brown said. “I have gained a lot of experience through my major, and I will stay motivated to make my dream come true.” Xequille Harry was a cornerback and special teams star during his senior season in 2017, which saw Weber State reach the quarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs. He received All-American Honors while amassing 306 punt return yards, 96 career tackles and 13 pass breakups. Harry got to know people, travel to different states and compete at a level a majority of athletes never reach. He enjoyed working with his coaches while working through obstacles. He had to face sitting out a full year due to the lack of offers, the distance between his family and friends, adjusting to the time difference, not attending school while playing and learning a completely new language. Harry decided to go overseas and is currently playing in Germany. He’s continuing his career while playing as a cornerback for the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns, but hopes to reach the promised land for football players. “I would like to become a professional athlete in the NFL,” Harry said. “I am also interested to start working in the field of family therapy and have plans on getting married and starting a family.” Jadrian Clark was the starting quarterback for the Wildcats for the entirety of 2015 and 2016 after joining the team in 2013. He garnered third team All-Big Sky honors while passing for 5,810 career yards, 40 touchdowns and 758 rushing yards. Clark was fortunate to receive a full
scholarship, play as the starting quarterback for Weber and experience the western part of the United States. He enjoyed all the responsibilities he was given in his position and is thankful for what Weber State has done for him. During Clark’s years at Weber he experienced multiple injuries, some tearing his throwing shoulder and breaking his collarbone. After graduating, he had a tryout with the Seattle Seahawks, but it didn’t turn out the way he’d planned. Clark thought his career was over, but shortly after visiting Seattle, he received an offer to play in Germany. He gained a lot of responsibility and learned the importance of taking care of his body. Clark is also a writer for Titan’s Wire with USA Today. “I hope to have had a successful career and be the most accomplished quarterback to ever play in Europe,” Clark said. “Career wise, outside of football, I hope to go to law school one day and hope to maybe have a family by then.” Ryan Richardson played on the men’s basketball team for four years as a guard. He graduated in 2018, receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He played in 117 games and started in 84 at Weber. With 1,024 points, Richardson is 29th in career scoring points, fifth in career three-pointers made with 235, ninth in career three-point percentage and earned Big Sky All-Conference Honors. Richardson didn’t experience the social life most athletes do, but this was by choice. He liked the feeling of walking around the school and feeling like a

“somebody” but also enjoyed spending time with his close friends and girlfriend at the time. Winning the Big Sky Tournament in 2016 and advancing to play Xavier in the NCAA tournament is also one of Richardson’s favorite memories at Weber. Richardson faced many mental blocks along the way. He never understood why he would be taken out of the lineup as a starter but believes that it has made him a stronger athlete and overall has given him more confidence in himself. He had to pick an agent who he believed would allow him to work and create opportunities. He decided to travel overseas and is currently playing in the Netherlands as a guard for the Dutch Windmills. He gets many minutes in a starting role but also comes off the bench to help his team offensively. “For me personally, I want to have two to three kids with my wife, Ashlynn Richardson,” he said. “I see myself playing at the
highest level possible and trying to make an impact on lives around me who are less fortunate than myself.” Zach Braxton was born in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, before making his way to Weber State where he was the starting center for the basketball team for a majority of his four years. Braxton set a Weber State record with 127 career starts, 780 career rebounds, 100 blocked shots, a career field-goal percentage of 58.9 percent. He also earned Big Sky All-Conference honors. Braxton enjoyed the trips he was able to experience with his teammates. Like Richardson, he will never forget the moment when Weber won the conference tournament in Reno and went to play in the NCAA tournament against Xavier in 2016. Braxton struggled with maintaining the balance of becoming a Division 1 athlete and the amount of schoolwork he was given. He had to adjust to different classroom
settings and it became difficult when he was away for three days out of a five day school week. Braxton has signed with an agent and is hoping to go play in Europe, Asia or South America for the next few years. “I want to play basketball at the professional level for a couple of years,” Braxton said. “I hope to move back to the United States, hopefully married, with a family and doing the best I can do to provide for them.” Linebacker Tre’Von Johnson played at Weber from 2013 to 2016 and has experiences success in the NFL. He was a twotime team captain, notched 258 career tackles, nine career sacks and was selected to play in the 2017 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017, then with the Dallas Cowboys practice squad later in the season. He was promoted to the roster in 2018 before being released.
He found his way onto the rosters of the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers before the 2018 season was over. Johnson’s favorite memory came in his senior year when Weber made it to the playoffs to play against Chattanooga. This was the first playoff appearance for Weber since 2009. He was raised in Missouri and Utah and had to overcome the feeling of being away from his parents, wife and kids to pursue his career in the NFL. “I see myself hopefully retired from the NFL,” Johnson said. “I plan to play for eight seasons, and I am on my third year now, Super Bowl rings, of course. Mainly I see myself as a business owner. I opened a boutique with my wife, Myley, and I want to be able to sit back with my kids, be financially stable and not have to work again.” Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

WSU ART DEPARTMENT PREPARES
GRADUATES FOR THE FUTURE
By COLTON HEWARD Reporter
Weber State University’s Department of Visual Art and Design offers students several programs including Art Education, 2D and 3D Media, Photography and Graphic Design. Some of these fields are designed to prepare students to enter different career fields. Students are given a path to graduation from the time they begin their college careers. Graduates often find themselves thrown into the unknown, feeling overwhelmed and lost while entering the work force and trying to find a career. WSU recognized this problem and does its best to help prepare students to find employment in their desired field after graduation.
Mark Biddle, professor of Graphic Design, has been teaching at WSU for 38 years. During his tenure, Biddle has helped many of his students find jobs within the graphic design community. “There are many opportunities given to our students to find employment after graduation,” Biddle said. One of the ways the graphic design program helps prepare its students for employment is through the design seminar. The design seminar helps students prepare portfolios for future employers, as well providing tips and tricks for interviewing. “Graphic design is everywhere you look,” said Biddle. Job opportunities for graphic design graduates are numerous, and most graduates are able to find work quickly after graduation.
“Career options are constantly changing in design. The best advice that I can give to our graduating students is that they must be willing to adapt,” Biddle said. The Art Education program takes advantage of internships by requiring their students to participate in a semester of student teaching before graduating. “My semester of student teaching is the number-one thing that prepared me for a career in education,” WSU Art Education graduate Jaclyn Heward said. Internships, such as student teaching, give students real world experience that cannot be taught or experienced in a college classroom setting. “It not only gave me the confidence that I needed to be able to run my own classroom, but it also put me in contact
with individuals who were instrumental in helping me get my current job,” Heward said. The value of internships was evident throughout the Department of Visual Art and Design. “We do our best to equip our students for success. One of the ways we accomplish this is through internships,” said professor of photography Paul Crow. Along with the core curriculum taught in these different programs, skills such as critical thinking and creativity are emphasized. “These skills prepare our students to go into all sorts of different fields,” Crow said. ‘CATS FEARED FOURSOME
LOOKS TO FUTURE
By JOE TRAUB Desk Editor
As spring commencement approaches, four of the most decorated basketball players in Weber State history are looking to the future. The men’s and women’s teams have combined to win 147 games in the last four seasons but must now face the future without Brekkott Chapman, Zach Braxton, Emily Drake and Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman. Drake and Welch-Coleman have been stalwarts for the women’s squad since arriving at the program, as the two combined to miss only four career games. Despite the ups and downs of the team on the court, Welch-Coleman said she will leave WSU with positive memories, specifically from when the team was traveling together. “My best memories are from when we were on the road,” Welch-Coleman said. “As a team we would just enjoy each other’s presence and have fun and have conversations about random things we noticed while traveling.” Welch-Coleman looks back to the end of her freshman season as a turning point.
The Wildcats were competing in the Big Sky Conference tournament in Reno, and she provided a lift in the team’s first-round victory over Portland State University. “It was my first tournament game, and it was exciting,” Welch-Coleman said. “I came off the bench with energy, fed off the crowd and even set my first career high at 16 points.” Drake leaves WSU averaging 11.2 points per game. She recently traveled to the women’s final four in Tampa Bay and competed in a camp led by a European scout. She said she is going to explore opportunities to play professionally. On the men’s side, forward Brekkott Chapman played two seasons in Ogden after transferring from the University of Utah. He established himself as a quality defender and shot-blocker while also leading the ‘Cats in three-point shot efficiency in 201819 at 43 percent. Chapman is signing with the YouFirst sports agency and believes he has a solid chance to reach the promised land of professional basketball. “I believe the NBA is mine to get to if I put the work in. That’s what I’m pushing for,”
Chapman said. “But I want to play professionally whether it be the NBA, G-League or overseas, whichever is the best opportunity for me.” Center Zach Braxton was as steady as they come for the Wildcats, as he played in 128 of 133 possible games in his career. He was a fierce competitor and proved to be a tough test for opponents in the post. “It’s been a heck of an experience, and it’s definitely sad to be leaving,” Braxton said. “But I’m excited for the young guys to have a chance to grow and enjoy the same stuff I did.” Braxton has signed with JCK Sports Group, a worldwide basketball agency represented by NBA and FIBA clients. He is taking a realistic approach about his professional career but is remaining hopeful. “I think right now my chances at the NBA are slim, but I have a lot of confidence that if I go overseas and put in the work I can have a lot of success,” Braxton said. “Maybe someday I can come back to the states and play professionally here.” Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

SO LONG FOR NOW,
BUT NOT FAREWELL
JOE TRAUB Columnist
Celebrating a football victory in Cedar City with the Destruction Zone.

As I look back on my time as a student at Weber State, I wonder where the time has gone. It feels like yesterday that a wide-eyed 18-year-old fresh out of high school moved to Ogden from New Mexico. I will graduate with nothing but gratitude and appreciation for how WSU has transformed me as a person. In my first two weeks as a freshman, I was uncertain I would last the first block of classes, let alone the whole year. I learned to believe in myself and kept saying “you can do this.” This way of thinking helped ease me into campus life, both academically and socially. I was blessed with tremendous roommates in my freshman year, something that set the tone for my fouryear tenure. A key learning experience occurred at the conclusion of my first semester. I was enrolled in a Math 990 course, which admittedly was not my favorite, but I pushed through and appeared to be in solid position to pass the class. That all changed when it was time for the final. I went in on the Monday morning of finals week to take the exam and received a poor score. This was a test I had to get 70 percent or higher on to pass the course and could take an infinite number of times. Yes, I considered quitting, especially after three days of taking it without passing. At that point in the semester, people want to be done and headed home for the holidays. I felt if I put my mind to it, I could do it. I ended up passing on the last day possible to take the exam and sure enough, my Christmas was much more rewarding that year. There have been inevitable ups and downs, but I leave Weber State satisfied with my academic career. Instructors such as Jean Norman, Anthony Sanders, Alexander Lancaster and Allison Hess helped contribute to many of my successes. They all pushed me to be stronger, work harder, and I cannot thank them enough. I have been fortunate to be involved on campus, whether the experience has entailed covering a Wildcats FCS football playoff game, taking a trip down to Cedar City with the “Destruction Zone” or anything in between. Out of the nearly 1,350 days I have experienced at WSU, it will be hard to top Dec. 1, 2018. The football team demolished
Southeast Missouri State in an afternoon second-round playoff game at Stewart Stadium and immediately after, the men’s basketball team defeated BYU for the first time in 15 years at a raucous Dee Events Center. I have a tendency to classify my favorite experiences based on what happened in the sporting world, but this was a truly special day for Weber State. The accomplishments for both teams was unprecedented and led to a festive day across campus. Joining The Signpost was the best decision I made as a Weber State student. I wish I would have been on board since day one, but the last two years have been quite a ride. I started out as a green, naive reporter and everyone was incredibly welcoming. I recently looked back at my first story which was published two years ago and it is evident how far I have come along. Of course, a large portion of this success must be attributed to my colleagues at The Signpost. I am also grateful for how my fellow staff was here for me during a time of heartache when my grandfather passed away of ALS this January. Their support meant the world and helped me heal quicker. My advisors, editors and fellow writers have been instrumental in my progression as a writer. I had many questions throughout my first semester on staff. No, I had no clue that you were not supposed to use an Oxford comma. I did not know why using words such as “good” or “fun” is frowned upon. Fast forward two years and I am now helping others learn these same grammatical rules. It has been an honor to serve as assistant sports editor in 2018-19 alongside Brandon May, who I am also proud to call one of my best friends. The Signpost trips have also been quite rewarding. In my last year alone, I have been afforded opportunities to travel to Pocatello, Nashville and Boise. I have either covered high-stakes games for athletics or attended a conference in which I boosted my broadcasting and writing skills. As I make my ascent into the real world, Weber State will always be with me in one way or another. I do not have the slightest clue as to where I will be a year from now, but one thing can be guaranteed and that is I will always carry the purple and white on my sleeve. Thank you for everything, Weber State. I am eager to see the future developments which occur on and off campus in the near future and hoping the football team will soon bring an FCS championship back to Ogden. I am saying so long, not farewell. Go Wildcats. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

WILDCATS’ FINAL IMPRESSIONS By CHRISTIAN JOHNSON Reporter
Life after high school as an athlete either means going on to play at the next level or adjusting to a life without daily practice and prepping for game days. Graduating collegiate athletes face this situation a second time. However, the bonds made in college are often much deeper than the those made in high school. Tatiana Su’ese’e, senior pitcher for the Weber State University softball team, shares a close bond with all of her teammates. “Everybdy on my team already knows that I would do anything for them,” Su’esu’e said. “I’m kind of like everyone’s big sister.” Su’esu’e recorded a combined 99 strikeouts in her first three season at Weber State, helping to bring the ‘Cats back-toback Big Sky Championships during her sophomore and junior seasons. The softball team is currently on a
winning streak, having just completed a sweep over in-state rival SUU as they look to win another Big Sky Championship. Su’esu’e’s teammate Addie Jensen, also a pitcher, shares a similar level of fondness for her time spent at Weber. Jensen is a transfer from Utah Valley Utah who started her collegiate career at Salt Lake Community College. She appreciates all of the support she received in Ogden. “I think the city of Ogden is a great support system,” Jensen said. “We always have people coming out to the games.” Jensen has a total of 19 strikeouts this season and looks to keep up her excellent level of play as the season continues. Weber State’s football team finished with a 10-3 overall record this past season and is 7-1 in conference play. Brothers Jordan and Parker Preator got to play their senior seasons in the same defensive backfield. The duo played opposite each other at the cornerback position and helped Weber advance to the quarterfinal of the
NCAA FCS playoffs, where the Wildcats lost a close battle to Maine. Jordan Preator had a season-high two interceptions against Southeast Missouri. Parker Preator’s best game of the season came against the University of Northern Colorado with six solo tackles and eight total tackles. The Weber State soccer team had a good year finishing at 9-5-4, hosting the Big Sky Championships on their home field. Senior forward Morgan Quarnberg had a career year, scoring 14 goals on 27 shots, including two game-winning scores. She was named to the Big Sky All-Conference team. Quarnberg played her entire collegiate career at Weber and improved each year to become one of the top players in her conference. Her teammate Madison Garlock, also a forward, played all four seasons at Weber and has a combined 32 points and 16 assist in her Wildcat career. These student athletes will never don a
Weber uniform again, but the legacy they leave behind for their teammates and the city of Ogden will be felt long after they’re gone. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

DRESSING TO IMPRESS
GRADUATION ATTIRE EXPLAINED By KAINOA NUNEZ Reporter
Wildcats may bleed purple, but when it comes to graduation at Weber State University, there are many other colors that students wear with pride — each with its own unique meaning. During the commencement ceremony on April 26, students will represent their colleges as they walk. With a total of 13 different colors, the cords corresponding with each academic college will be as follows. White will be used to represent associate and bachelor’s degrees in the College of Arts and Humanities as well as Master’s of Arts in English. Students graduating in the College of Sciences will wear golden yellow. Light blue will represent the College of Education as well as the master’s degree in
athletic training and education. Students who achieve associate and bachelor’s degrees in the College of Applied Science and Technology will wear black. Graduates in the College of Electrical Engineering will wear orange. Students in the College of Business and Economics, as well as those who achieve a master’s degree in accounting, taxation and business administration, will wear brown. Cream will represent the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, as well as graduates receiving a Bachelor of Integrated Studies. Students graduating in criminal justice will wear citron. Apricot will represent the College of Health Professions, as well as graduates who receive a master’s in radiology or nursing. All students graduating in health admin-
istration services will wear salmon. Crimson will be used to represent students achieving a master’s degree in communication. Weber’s school colors — purple and white — will represent graduates receiving an associate degree in general studies. “It’s cool to have different [cord] colors because if you know what they represent, then you can tell from someone else on what they accomplished,” graduating senior Micah Van Sickle said. Students receiving their diplomas will wear two colors of robes: purple and black. The black robes will be worn by students receiving a bachelor’s degree, with black caps and a color tassel representing the department or major they’re graduating from. Students graduating with departmental honors will don a white ribbon suspending a gold medallion, and those graduating with university honors will appear wearing
a purple sash. Graduates achieving their master’s degree will have a slightly different look to their gowns, sporting a long and draping sleeve to distinguish them from the other degrees. Although WSU doesn’t award doctoral degrees, those with a Ph.D. will wear gowns that include a hood with a stripe representing the program from which they graduated with three stripes on the sleeve bearing the color of the area from which they received their doctorate. In the front of the gown is a velvet trim. Students graduating this spring are able to pick up their caps, gowns, tassels and other mementos at the Grad Finale on April 16 in the Shepherd Union Ballrooms from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

HOW LGBT AND LDS CHURCH MEMBERS BUILD BRIDGES TOGETHER By SIERRA HAWKINS Desk Editor
It’s no secret that there’s tension between the LGBT community and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For people who are “gay and Mormon,” this tension is not only an outside force, but an internal battle between their two identities. As part of their macro-level social work class project, social work majors Brooke Cowley and April Skeem hosted the panel “A Rainbow to Heaven” to bridge the gap between these two seemingly opposing communities. Cowley admitted that while she was nervous about putting on the event, she felt it was important these two communities find a way to blend together. The beginnings of this panel started when Cowley went to the LoveLoud Festival created by Imagine Dragons band member Dan Reynolds and watched the documentary “Believer,” which documented the creation of the festival. While not experiencing discrimination and stigma herself for being part of the LGBT community, Cowley did feel she understood a bit of what that stigma felt like. “I’ve felt a little bit a stigma for mental health, coming home from my mission early with depression and anxiety, so I feel like I can relate in a way with that discrimination, but in a different sense,” Cowley said. Skeem agreed with Cowley, and she hoped this event would create a bridge between the two communities. “I think the lack of support has led to a lot of suicide, isolation, different problems, but we’re hoping to make a bridge with the main church here (in Utah) and see if we can help the two communities maybe have a little more respect and compassion for each other,” Skeem said. The event was comprised of a panel of five people who represented various intersections between the LDS church
and the LGBT community. Cowley and Skeem moderated and asked panelists questions about their experiences with the relationships between the LDS church and LGBT community, including what they thought the greatest barrier between the groups was. A consensus among the panelists was the misconceptions held on both sides. Panelist Kole Pei, an active transgender member of the LDS church, said many members of the church feel uncomfortable because they feel the LGBT community wants to change the church and change the doctrine without listening to members’ feelings. Carson Tueller, a former member of the LDS church and a gay man who works with Affirmation, offered an example, talking about his relationship with his mother when the LDS church created its November 2015 policy stating that all members who were in a same-sex marriage were considered apostates and the children of these marriages could not receive church blessings and covenants. The policy was later reversed in 2019. “I was so determined that my mom come my way 100 percent that I was incapable of listening to what her experience was like as a mother,” Tueller said, “that she was navigating her own very complex experience with her faith and grieving certain things and trying to do her own process.” As a gay man, Tueller felt justified in his actions because he felt he was more marginalized and that his mother needed to understand him and his struggles, but it only weakened their relationship. “That really put a wall between us because I put conditions on how my mom loved me,” Tueller said. However, he said that once he practiced giving her unconditional love and acceptance without putting requirements on how she could love, they rebuilt their relationship.
While Tueller acknowledged the pain that many LGBT people face because they feel that kind of conditional love, he said it’s important to still give unconditional love to those who may hold antiLGBT views. “It’s almost like we’re doing some modeling and saying, ‘This is what we’re looking for, and we’re going to exemplify what we’re looking for,” Tueller said. Overall, many of the panelists stressed that to combat these misconceptions, education and advocacy were important tools. Nathan Winterton, a former member of the LDS church and a gay man who works as a public speaker, believes that because members of the church may not be educated on LGBT topics, members may say harmful and hurtful things casually without realizing it. Jen Bastian, an active member of the LDS church and ally for the LGBT community, was tired of these misconceptions and mentioned how her son had come to her and told her the preconceptions that people had about him because he was gay, including associating him with pedophilia. Bastian takes pride in the efforts she made to understand her son and the greater LGBT community as a whole. So hearing the comments that people make because they don’t know or refuse to learn about the LGBT community irritates her. In her opinion, allies are an important part in breaking down these prejudices and preconceptions. “People are dumb. It’s our job (as allies) to educate them,” Bastian said. “We need to stop being so dang silent. If we know stuff and know it’s true, don’t keep your mouth shut. Open it up. Go tell people. It’s your responsibility.” Later, Cowley asked the panelists whether it was better for LGBT members to stay in the church or leave. Jason Williams, a licensed marriage and family therapist, said it was up to the individual. He said if the member felt comfortable staying in the church and it was something they felt strongly about, then they gave their congregation a voice it might lack if they left. While she stays in the church for other reasons, Bastian said she also stays to educate her fellow members. Pei stayed because the members of the church were his biggest support group, despite what President Dallin H. Oaks said about gender being eternal. Pei’s extended family was beyond supportive of him after he came out as transgender.
“The reason I stayed is because when I almost left, the most validation and the most love, the most care that I received in that time of need was from members. It’s my biggest support group,” Pei said. “I know that there’s room for change and that there’s room for love to drive hate out.” But not everyone believed staying was the best choice. Winterton left for his mental and physical health, as it was the cruelty of members and their words muttered under their breath that drove him away. Earlier, he said when he came out the first time to his bishop, his bishop recommended he go through conversion therapy. “After going through different forms of it for too long, it just took too much out of me, so I attempted to end my life,” Winterton said, “ and succeeded for a minute and a half.” When he woke up from his medically-induced coma, his parents asked him why he tried to commit suicide, and he said he screamed at them, “I’m gay” and that he was afraid they didn’t want him. Winterton’s mental and physical health improved, but he couldn’t go back to church because he was triggered by church events. Tueller also left, requesting that his name be removed from the records of the church. He did laugh as he mentioned he requested his name to be removed the night before he became the president of Affirmation, becoming even more immersed in church history and politics than he was as a member. He was in church buildings often, trying to push for equality as diplomatically as possible to build bridges between the two communities. But at the heart of this question, the panelists said people needed to be true to their individual self, regardless of whether that meant being a member or leaving. Questions were opened up to the audience and one person asked what the ideal world would look like if these two communities were going to be one. Tueller and Winterton pointed out that while members of the LDS church are afraid of doctrine and policy change, it needs to happen for queer members to be equal to their straight, cisgender peers. “There is no queer narrative inside of or that fits comfortably in LDS doctrine,” Tueller said. “To become like God is to be heterosexual, to marry someone of the opposite sex in the temple and to be cisgender.” According to him, the current doctrine

means that either there is something that hasn’t been revealed yet, or queer members have to accept their orientation or gender identity as an earthly flaw. But because queer members have had their feelings validated by God, the problem they see is in the doctrine. To him, that’s the base conflict. In his ideal world, there needs to be a way for queer members to reach exaltation in the same way that their straight counterparts
do. Otherwise, queer members will continue to have a sub-status in the eyes of God and the church. For audience members, this panel gave them hope about breaching the gap between these identities. Glenn McRae, while on a date with his boyfriend, was excited about the event. “I wanted to be up onstage answering questions too!” McRae said. As a member of the LDS church and because he was
gay, he felt he also had a story that would help people. He said at first, coming to terms that he was gay was hard. But as he went to the temple and prayed about it, he received an answer in three parts. “’You’re still my son, I still love you, just keep doing good,’” McRae said. He was positive about reconciliation, hoping that one day that there would be something in place for him. Howev-

er, there was one thing he wanted to ask of people. “(Don’t) remind me of how God feels about it because I know. I’ve received my own answers to prayer. I know what He wants me to do,” McRae said. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

FACULTY BIDS FAREWELL TO WEBER By ASHLYND GREENWOOD Reporter
Graduation is a milestone most students look forward to throughout their entire college careers. However, it can also be an exciting time for professors beginning a new journey to retirement. This semester, 11 professors will be stepping away from Weber State University for good. After years of teaching, in areas ranging from Library Science to Health Science, the departing faculty will include Joanne Lawrence, Mark Biddle, Stephen Clark, Carol Welninski, Diane Kawamura, Carla Wiggins, Louise Salmond, Jody Reese, Laura Anderson and Kathryn Payne. One member in particular, botany professor Dr. Stephen Clark, will be leaving behind a unique legacy. Clark has been
with Weber State’s Botany Department for 54 years — coming full circle after being in the first class to graduate from Weber State with a bachelor’s degree in 1958. Originally studying electrical engineering, Clark eventually changed his major to something that would allow him to be outdoors. “I thought ‘I’ll become a forester, and in this I was required to take a botany class,’” Clark said. “At the time, I truly couldn’t think of anything worse. I thought ‘Ah, that must be awful. What a girly thing, studying flowers.’ To my surprise, I changed my major in this class.” He was later hired at WSU to teach his specialty, plant taxonomy, and to curate the herbarium on campus. Clark continued to instruct in the general education program for many years, traveling a significant amount to foreign countries, studying various cultures and their interactions with the land

around them. “I am a taxonomist, but I am also an ethnobotanist. I’ve spent over the last 30 years bouncing around five continents, interacting with witch doctors and shamans and wandering through the jungles.” Clark said. Throughout his experiences with the San Bushmen in Botswana, the Masai, Australian Aborigines and more, Clark became inspired to introduce an ethnobotany course to WSU. “The Ethnobotany course allowed students to learn how weaving was done, how labor intensive something like this was, the process of collecting natural materials and essentially how all of this supports your life,” Department Chair Sue Harley said. In addition to his renovation of life sciences curricula at WSU, Clark was also an inspiring force for countless students in his Taxonomy, Ethnobotany,
Plant Geography and Intermountain Flora classes. “What inspires me most about Doc is that he is essentially the botanist that I want to be. He is very knowledgeable, he emphasizes on field work and most importantly, he is in tune with himself, the environment and the things around him,” botany major Sarah McDonald said. Despite his rich history at Weber State, Clark said he is looking forward to a new chapter in his life. With his new free time, he plans to continue staying busy, creating community workshops and generally do whatever he wants. The Botany Department will honor Clark with the Outstanding Alumni Award in conjunction with its award ceremony on April 18. The university commemoration for all retirees will be April 16. The annual Clubs and Organizations Carnival takes hundreds of hours planning and preparing by Weber State University Student Association to ensure everything runs smoothly. WSUSA Vice President of Clubs and Organizations Katie Giddens meticulously reviewed the carnival to make changes for the next year, even when it had just ended. She was more than happy with how the event played out. Giddens was impressed to have so much student involvement throughout the entire event. The event had between 55 and 60 booths total, alongside local vendors and performers. The booths advertised with decorations, food, prizes and giveaways. The planning team brought in samba dancers and the three-time national champion WSU cheerleaders who performed in the
Shepherd Union Atrium. Students could participate in an escape room on wheels in the Bell Tower Plaza. There were even snakes attendees could hold, if they were so inclined. “Five months of planning really does pay off,” Giddens said. “None of it would have been possible without my advisor Heather and my incredible team.” Raven Uribe, a member of the WSUSA Leadership team, said she and her team reserved her table for the carnival about two weeks in advance to ensure a frontrow seat with a lot of traffic. She believed people came to her table because they were lucky enough to get a spot near the many performances, like aerialists. “There was a really good representation by the clubs and orgs, Greek life organizations and student association,” Uribe said. Many used the carnival to appeal to the student population at large, inviting members to join likeminded organizations. Kacey Naea is a member of both of the

SO YOU’RE A COLLEGE GRADUATE,
NOW WHAT? By ALLY NELSON & KIERSTYNN KING Reporters
Recent graduates need resources when it comes to planning out their lives after getting their degrees. Some students will have a prospective job lined up after college that applies to their degree, but many more won’t. Daniel Bedford, professor of geography and chair of Weber State University’s Honors Program, suggested Indeed as a source for students in their search for jobs and to discover their wants and needs within their field. The website helps guide students in finding jobs that correlate with their interests. When students need help with making decisions in regards to their future careers, Bedford finds WSU Career Services to be useful.
Bedford said it is okay when students do not have a concrete idea about what their plans are after graduation. “According to surveys, employers often are not interested in a person’s knowledge on a subject anymore, but rather a person’s skill-set, such as teamwork, leadership and communication,” Bedford said. Alex Weiss, WSU graduate student and English major, has a set of options as to what he could do after graduation. Initially, he planned to publish his fictional novel after graduation, but then realized it’d take longer than anticipated. Another option he considered was to become a journalist. He had concerns being an English major because of the uncertainty in future careers, but he said it was worth it. “It’s difficult when you are an English major, trying to figure out what to do once you graduate, but when you find what you

love, you just go from there and the opportunities are endless,” Weiss said. Receiving guidance as a college student can be beneficial in order to discover oneself. Once a student discovers who they are, they are able to differentiate their likes and dislikes in their career field. When Weiss applied for college, he had no idea who he wanted to become. However, when discussing his interests, he realized writing had always been one of his biggest strengths and an activity he enjoyed as well. Career Services helped Weiss discover that what he loved to do could be turned into a career. Career Service helps students who are undecided choose a major by taking a career interest assessment. There is a follow-up assessment that analyzes students’ career interests to narrow down options. Additionally, Career Services offers employment counseling by helping students
define a career path that aligns with their major, reviewing resumes and hosting mock interviews. Director of Career Services, Dr. Winn Stanger, said that students often start the job and internship process too late. Preparing a resume early can lead to better results when trying to nail down a job or internship. “Often times we have students come in here who are seniors that find out about us too late,” Stanger said. “We want students to utilize our services as early as they possibly can.” There are resources to help graduate students prepare for the future and life after college. Students just have to use them. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com
