No gun, no case A caller said she saw a male individual walking east, up the hill from the Science Lab. The caller said she thought she saw a gun case and she had seen the individual multiple times on campus. She said she confronted the individual and then called the police several minutes later. Lieutenant Mike Davies said the police arrived and they searched the area; however, by that time, the individual was gone.
Do no doughnuts Police received a call about three vehicles doing doughnuts in the Dee Events Center parking lot. None of the callers could give a description about the vehicles or license plates. Two officers immediately responded but found no one one driving recklessly. The officers spoke to two individuals in a car nearby who said they had been there but didn’t see or hear anyone driving recklessly.
Left for dent A parked vehicle was hit in the W-1 lot on Nov. 13 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. The car was dented on the left side. The victim said initially there was a white car parked next to them, but that there was no damage to that car.
Sister slander A student got into an argument with two university staff members because of an alleged issue his sister had brought to their attention. The argument occurred on Nov. 13 in Elizabeth Hall. Lieutenant Michael Davies said that when police arrived, the student had left the scene.
Panic! at the Alarm A panic alarm was hit in the Miller Administration Building on Nov. 13. The alarm was hit by mistake by a member of the staff, and there were no reported incidents.
No leash can hold me A passersby called in that a dog was running loose behind Stewart Library on Nov. 12. It appeared that the owner was walking him but did not have the dog leashed. The officer who responded was unable to locate them.
Daddy issues The testing center in the Student Services Center reported that they had received threats over the phone on Nov. 10. The staff said two females had come in that day to take a test but did not have the proper identification. It was determined that it was the father of one the students who called and made the threats.

the dorm rooms. The tenant was cooking a quesadilla, and it burnt in the oven, which set the smoke alarm off. The tenant opened the windows to clear off the smoke and nobody was harmed. The quesadilla was being cooked in a toaster oven, which are not allowed in dorm rooms, only in the kitchen.
Caught green-handed An RA at the Wildcat Village reported that they believed a resident was smoking marijuana. The student admitted that they had smoked marijuana off-campus and disclosed where he had smoked. He claimed to not have any in his room and gave consent for his room to be searched. Police found paraphernalia. He was not charged with possession, just a warning, as this was his ďŹ rst time. Housing said they would do an investigation on their behalf, and the resident would be referred to the dean for the housing violation.

LONGTIME ATHLETES SET TO MOVE ON
Assistant Sports Editor
With Weber State University’s fall convocation approaching, this time of year means the end of college careers for graduating WSU athletes. The Wildcats will say goodbye to several decorated players, including volleyball outside hitter Andrea Hale. The Elk Ridge, Utah, native will finish her career with 1,055 kills, as she became the 12th player in WSU history to reach the 1,000 kill plateau. “I love Weber. It’s very sad and hard for me to leave it,” Hale said. “I owe a lot to the teammates and coaches who have made me the player I am today.” Hale helped lead the ‘Cats to back-to-back postseason appearances the last two seasons, something that had not been accomplished since 2007-08. “I’ve grown so much,” Hale said. “When I first got here, I had no idea who I was. I had this dream to be a really good teammate and leader, and I was able to fulfill it.” On the gridiron, fullback Brady May is set to move on after the conclusion of Weber State’s historic season. “It means a lot, both athletically and academically,” May said. “It’s been a great experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Seeing how things have changed, I’m sad it’s coming to an end.” May has scored four touchdowns during his career, while providing key blocking for the offensive line. He has made countless memories throughout his time at WSU, dating back to his freshman year. “My freshman year, beating Montana (in Missoula)

is a day I will never forget,” May said. “Also, the workouts, early mornings, the conditionings, they are all memories that I will cherish forever.” Hale said the loss in this year’s Big Sky Tournament was difficult because of the finality of it all. “I wanted to just get back and get after it in the gym,” Hale said. “I wanted to get back at it, but it hit me that I was done.” Hale expressed gratitude for her head coach, Jeremiah Larsen. “His first day was my first day,” Hale said. “We did a lot of growing together. He is a phenomenal coach. I owe so much of who I am today to that man.” For May, he is going to stay involved with WSU. “I just got into graduate school here,” May said. “I will be in the communications program, so I am going to pursue that and see where it takes me.” Weber State women’s soccer coach Tim Crompton has six seniors who recently played their final games. He said the athletic department has multiple goals in helping student athletes graduate. “In this department, we have two reasons for being here,” Crompton said. “The primary reason is we want them to leave with a college education and degree and have options in life. Secondarily, we want to win games along the way because we are competitive.” In terms of replacing players on the field, Crompton said the key is to have a veteran team. “You always want to be old,” Crompton said. “If you’re old, you generally have a good chance.” Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

As the end of the semester creeps up, students are contemplating what will come next. While some are inviting their grandmas to graduation, others are cashing grandma’s birthday check to pay for next semester’s tuition. Whether you’re overwhelmed by the beginning of your college career or the end of it, professors from the Lindquist College of Arts and Humanities have advice for you. Dr. Jenny Kokai, an associate professor of theater, has advice for freshman. She recommends they always be on time, prepared with questions and ready to learn along the way. She also wants people to acknowledge the good things they see other do.
For graduates, Kokai acknowledges the future holds many uncertainties. She encourages students to take every opportunity to learn as much as they can. “Say yes to every opportunity,” Kokai said. “Be kind. Take risks.” From theater to art to foreign languages, the College of Arts and Humanities has long provided students with a better understanding of the world and themselves. While some argue these skills may be difficult to apply in a practical setting, Kokai believes this is what makes art and humanities graduates so competitive. “Most studies show that future employers don’t care what your major is, just what higher level thinking skills you have: collaboration, communication, analysis,” Kokai said. “So study
something you love, but study the heck out of it while you have the opportunity. What I learned that was most useful as an undergrad was how to learn and how to build relationships.” Building relationships can be one of the most important steps to landing a job after graduation. Networking and connections are an invaluable resource for career searches. Catherine Zublin, a professor of theatre, advises students to build relationships with their professors early. “Try to connect with at least one professor a semester, and then you have options for letters of recommendation,” Zublin said. Dr. Emily January Petersen, an assistant professor in the English department, believes students must learn to make connections between what they
have learned and what their employers may be looking for in the workplace. Then, students can articulate those connections. “My advice for those graduating is to be patient and ambitious,” Petersen said. “Learn to speak about your work in ways that anybody will understand. Become an expert in your field, and then become an expert at translating your skills across disciplines.” Regardless of your major, the career you choose or how far along you are, continue to do your best and never give up. Whether you’re preparing to walk across the graduation stage or into Math 1010, stand tall and work hard and you will be met with success. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

WILDCAT GRADUATES ARE
IN THIS TOGETHER
DARYN STEED Columnist
Four years ago, I sat down for my first class at Weber State. It was Intro to Literature, and my professor didn’t make us go around the room to share fun facts that aren’t ever fun, so we were off to a great start. She gave us a syllabus and the list of books we’d be reading for the semester and sent us on our way. I spent twenty minutes doing homework that night and thought I’d been lied to about college my whole life. It wasn’t hard. Senior year of high school had been more taxing. I floated through the first few assignments in a haze of naiveté and bliss. My reality check soon hit me: In the second week, I found out I’d only signed up for twelve credits when my scholarship required fifteen. I lost my scholarship and was suddenly left to come up with $1800 in three days to pay for the semester. I was working 20 hours a week making minimum wage; the closest I’d ever been to $1800 was my parent’s supposed college fund before they spent it to take our family on a cruise. I dropped my classes and felt like a total failure. I considered my options: I could look for full-time jobs that didn’t require a degree, I could move into the forest and strike up a life as a nomadic wanderer or I could suck it up and wait the semester out to try again. Looking back now, I’m so proud of the outcome. I took 18-credit hour semesters to make up for my early mistakes. I hounded my advisors for scheduling advice and successfully avoided taking a single math course, which is probably the only reason I made it this far. On a whim, I joined the campus newspaper, which was simultane-
ously electrifying and terrifying. I’m almost an entirely different person than the girl who sat in Intro to Literature. I had opinions but didn’t project them. I believed in things but didn’t fight for them. I was scared of things and shied away from them. I wanted to learn things but didn’t go after them. During my time at Weber, I’ve written books, essays that were only partially plagiarized in idea and articles that angered both a good portion of The Signpost’s readership and most of my family. I’ve stayed up nights for assignments and I’ve been on campus for fifteen hours for night classes. I’m not “just” graduating from Weber. I sacrificed a lot of energy to make this happen, and I’m proud of myself. I’m proud of you. We made it through the bizarre zoology course that really doesn’t seem like it should have been required and the uphill pathways in winter. We battled four years of flu seasons and rambling professors and students who talked more than should have been allowed. Weber has a large non-traditional student population: dads coming to school for the first time, moms coming back after taking a break for the first baby and another and another, career-changers and self-starters and second-chance-believers. We sat by each other in class, and we wrote our essays, and we internally groaned over every added homework assignment, and we never really knew each other or each other’s struggles. You never recovered from the incident freshman year. He’s been reeling from an awful breakup for months. She’s trying to figure out how to tell her parents. I’m making mistakes and apologizing, and I’m hurting people but not trying to. We’re failing assignments and begging to re-do them. We’re crying in bathroom stalls between classes. We’re laughing so hard at lunch we’re hunched all the way over. We’re making fun of our teachers but still writing emails to thank them. We’re making friends in classes that we’ll never speak to again once the class ends.
We were in this together, but we never understood it. Now we’re ready to put on our caps and put this time in our lives behind us. We’re applying for jobs or dental schools or internships or master’s programs. We’re developing finals colds and feeling stressed about things we can’t quite diagnose. The future looms over us, and we feel like we’re supposed to know what to do next. But we don’t. Among us are future doctors and salespeople and and tax attorneys, because somebody has to do it. Some of us will end up working dead-end jobs at call centers, even though we vowed we wouldn’t. We’ll travel and cook and move away and come home again. We’ll make friends and lose them and get haircuts we hate, but we’ll look back and hate them a little less. We’ll forget about that assignment in history that took six hours and caused a horrible acne breakout the next morning. We’ll forget about the boy across the hall that we never went up to. We’ll make money (but not a lot) and call our parents (but not enough), and we’ll keep making mistakes and apologizing. We’ll vote and make playlists and keep staying up too late and we’ll try our very best. Soon we’ll put on our caps, but I hope we never put Weber totally behind us. You don’t have to bleed purple, but you were forged in the fire of a Wildcat education. You learned and you grew and you changed. I found strength in my opinions and the things I believe in. I realized the impact my words can have. I watched people around me doubt themselves and their ability to enact change, and I felt sorry because you are all remarkable. You got this far by yourself, and you can do anything from here. We don’t know what’s going to happen next, but the future is ours. We’re in this together, 2018. Let’s make something happen in this world. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

Soon-to-be graduates at Weber State University can finish their senior year with a bang at the Grad Finale, the one stop for tassels, caps, gowns, commencement information, rings and graduation gifts. The Grad Finale is on Dec. 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Ballrooms A and B and is meant to provide students with a few final touches before commencement on Dec. 14. Those in attendance receive their free tassels, caps and gowns provided by the WSU Alumni Association. They can also shop for additional memorabilia. Items for purchase include diploma frames, class rings, graduation announcements,
class stoles and graduate gifts. Flowers are available for preorder as well. Once students gather everything they need to make graduation day special, they will then have the opportunity to solidify their achievements by dressing up in graduate attire and have their portrait taken by a professional photographer. Attendees of the event will also have the ability to join the Alumni Association and become members of the Wildcat family for life. If students cannot attend Grad Finale, they can pick up caps and gowns at the Wildcat Store Ogden campus location during regular business hours starting on Dec. 6. Caps and gowns will be available leading up to the day of convocation at the store and at the Dee Event Center on the day of convocation.
Although the event is held in celebration of the Wildcats who spent years of their lives working hard and studying on campus, it is also dedicated to acknowledging the people who helped them get through it. The Putting Student Through program at Weber gives students the opportunity to pay homage to those who helped make their graduation possible through participation in an honorary ceremony. These individuals could include anyone from a financial-providing parent to a morally supportive peer. Honorees who participate in the program will receive a PST degree, pin and diploma. The ceremony will take place the day before graduation on Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. in the Shepherd Union. Students who wish to nominate an
individual in the PST program will be instructed on the requirements and procedure of doing so at the Grad Finale event. Campus parking is usually free to the public of the day of commencement, which is Dec. 14, and tickets are not required for convocation services. Shuttle bus services will pick up passengers in the W8 parking lot just south of the Browning Center and Kimball Visual Arts Center and transport them to the East entrance of the Dee Events Center. The shuttle will operate every 10 minutes during peak hours. It operates from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on graduation day. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com
WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE
The Master of Criminal Justice
ANTHROPOLOGY
Summer, 2018
SOCIOLOGY OR AS A MAJOR OR MINOR? Sociology can teach many transferable skills in your future jobs, such as communication skills, critical and analytical thinking abilities, doing marketing and other research, finding information, asking the right questions, and find solutions. It allows you to look beyond the surface of issues to solve problems and identify opportunities. Sociology can give you a global perspective and prepare you for graduate school. Anthropology is the scientific study of humans through space and time. Anthropologists and Archaelogists and their skills can be readily applied to understanding human problems and offer real solutions to difficult problems. Anthropological skills, based on ethnography and empathy, can impact and offer government agencies, NGOs, software teams and companies concrete knowledge of human problems and conflicts, and produce key insights to local cultures. Biological Anthropology and Forensics offer insights to human evolution and criminal cases. Anthropology is a great major and the perfect minor. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TRIUMPH Diversity Reporter
Maintaining the determination to finish a degree can be daunting to some students, but many have the support of their family, friends and previous life mentors to help them prevail. Many international students, however, lack the luxury of access to their support networks. According to Weber State University’s reports and publications from the 2017-18 school year, WSU hosts 246 students from 61 foreign countries. International students face challenges on the road to their degree that some domestic students never have to worry about. This fall semester brought new policies to WSU international students. They are required to pay close to $500 for medical insurance through a company contracted by WSU, an added expense that was not listed in students’ estimation breakdown when they enrolled. Additionally, international students must remain enrolled full time. For the most part, domestic students have the option of deciding how many classes they enroll in each semester. If domestic students are enrolled
full time and decide a class isn’t working for them, they can drop the course without repercussions in most cases. International students must also have sufficient funds to sustain themselves during their time here. If they want to work, they may only work off-campus jobs that correlate with their course of study. On-campus jobs offer a maximum of 20 hours per week, and they’re scarce. Mary Machira, director of the International Student and Scholar Center, spoke of the pressures international students face. “Some students come from countries where they may have the finances, and suddenly the currency is devalued and less valuable than the dollar,” Machira said. “That can really affect their ability to pay.” Additionally, international students are immersing themselves in a completely new culture with a language not their own. They are adapting to these changes while their support systems are countries away from them. “Coming to the U.S. to get an education is not cheap,” Machira said. “And so when families are sending their children to come over and get a degree, there’s certainly, I would assume, some sort of expectation.”

Despite the added bumps in the road, WSU senior Rodrigue Kissou never felt like giving up on his business economics degree since the reason he came to the U.S. was to get an education. Kissou is from Burkina Faso. His father helped him come to the U.S. to pursue his education. He says he felt some pressure to be successful and get his degree because of the investment his father made in his education. At the time of the interview, Kissou was anticipating an interview with Goldman Sachs. He has applied elsewhere, including positions outside of Utah, but he wants to start his post-graduate career at Goldman Sachs. Had Kissou not chosen to attend WSU or pursue higher education in the U.S., he would still have aimed to get his degree in Burkina Faso, but that could have been more much more difficult. “You have more job opportunities in the U.S. than where I am from. You’re studying, but there is no clear path for what you want to be,” Kissou said. Kissou will be graduating this fall semester. His father will come into town to see his son walk, a reunion five years in the making. While the Weber State University Student Association is proud to see its members graduate at the end of each semester, it’s sad to see them go. However, being a part of the student association is a unique and beneficial experience that helps mold students to be more communityfocused. Carly Capener, Habitat for Humanity chair under WSUSA’s Service Team, will be graduating from the Design Engineering Technology Program. She plans to pursue a career in the field of architecture and construction. “I loved being the Habitat for Humanity chairperson because it allowed me to take the construction and design concepts I was learning in the classroom and apply them to building real homes for families in need,” Capener said. Capener has held her position in WSUSA Leaders for three consecutive semesters, and before holding this position, she was the director of operations for WSUSA’s Clubs and
Organizations for a full year. “I also enjoyed helping other Weber State students find beneficial ways to serve in their community,” Capener said. “WSUSA taught me leadership skills that have helped me during my time at Weber State and will continue to help me as I transition into my career.” Mareille Jewett is also graduating with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She is the Youth Community Connection student chair on the Service Team and has been in WSUSA Leaders for three semesters. “I have enjoyed my time on Service Team because I feel it has really related to my studies,” Jewett said. “I have been able to volunteer with the YCC, which is a perfect example of the particular subfield I am interested in with regards to social work.” Jewett has applied to graduate schools but is also looking for a job to do while in school. She plans to obtain her master’s degree in social work and become a licensed clinical social worker. “Being on WSUSA has helped me become a better leader, make more friends and feel like I am making a difference not only at Weber State but also in the community,” Jewett said.
Katherine Gibbons, vice president of WSUSA Clubs and Organizations, will be graduating with her bachelor’s degree in accounting this December. She will be starting on a master’s degree in taxation in January at WSU. Gibbons started in WSUSA at the beginning of fall semester and plans to continue on in WSUSA throughout the duration of her time at WSU. Since Gibbons will be continuing straight onto her master’s degree, she will continue in WSUSA Leaders as the VP of Clubs and Organizations until the end of Spring semester 2019. Had Gibbons not been coming back to do her master’s degree at WSU, a committee would have to choose someone to fill the elected position since elections are only once a year. The process is an arduous one. “I would’ve had to form a committee that consists of myself; Minsum Choi, senate vice president; Tara Peris, director of the SIL; Brett Perozzi; two senators; and then two individuals from that team,” Student Body President Jordan Slater said. The new vice president of activities was ratified already and has taken up her position for the remainder of the fall semester and for the
full spring semester. “They are technically elected, so we have to have a vast majority who agree on this individual, so we can make sure the needs of the students are being met,” Slater said. For non-vice president roles, the process is much more seamless. They keep a running list of those who have applied in the past and interview them to fill the positions. “It’s an awesome opportunity for them to go out and serve the university to the best of their abilities, and we as WSUSA wish them the best,” Slater said. Though it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to the members of WSUSA who are leaving or not returning to their positions for another semester, new perspectives are always welcome and beneficial. “Now, we have an opportunity to have new people come in with new perspectives and opportunities, and I think that is what helps our organization,” Slater said, “They bring a new opportunity to serve and help strengthen them as leaders but also help strengthen the team as they come in.” Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

WSU ANNOUNCES FINAL PRESIDENT CANDIDATES By DARYN STEED NIC MURANAKA HARRISON EPSTEIN JENNIFER GREENLEE Editors
In a press release sent out on Nov. 30, Weber State University announced the four finalists for the position of university president. The university has gone through a closed search since the end of the 2017– 18 academic year when Chuck Wight’s tenure ended. Since Wight’s departure, Norm Tarbox, the vice president for Administrative Services, has been WSU’s interim president. Brad Mortensen Mortensen became vice president for University Advancement in Jan. 2007. In that position, he acted as the university’s legislative liaison and oversaw several departments, including Government Relations and Marketing & Communications. He was tasked with handling relationships among internal and external stakeholders, working with civic and political organizations in the Weber and Davis Counties and implementing strategies that enhanced WSU’s image
and reputation. Mortensen got a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Utah State University. He then completed his doctoral degree in educational leadership at the University of Utah. He also holds of Master of Public Administration degree from Syracuse University.
Katherine Frank Katherine Frank is the provost and vice president for Academic and Student Life at Central Washington University. She has focused on institutional sustainability and student success. Since she was hired in July 2017, she helped the university transition to a new university budget model, complete General Education redesign, and opened an eighth off-campus instructional site. Before Frank was the provost at CWU, she was the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Northern Kentucky University, the largest college at NKU. She earned her B.A. in English from Bates College and received her M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Washington.
Melody Rose Melody Rose was the final president before Marylhurst University shut its doors on May 16. Before her time at Marylhurst, Rose was the chancellor of the Or-
egon University System. She also held several positions at Portland State University, eventually becoming the vice provost. A first-generation college student herself, Rose knows the value of higher education. She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of California at Santa Cruz. That’s when Rose went east, earning several master’s degrees and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. All candidates will be making a visit to Weber State on Dec. 5 for public meetings with students from 1 to 5 p.m. in Ballroom C of the Shepherd Union. The Board of Regents is expected to make their decision as to who will run Weber State for the coming future on Dec. 6. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com

STANDING OUT ABOVE THE CROWD AT GRADUATION
By ALYSON JOHNSON A&E Reporter
A common misconception is that if you have a college degree, you’ll get a job after graduation. A study from 2011 shows that over 53 percent of college graduates were unemployed or working in a job that did not require a bachelor’s degree. Recently released data from the American Consumer Survey in 2014 found that number fell to 33 percent. Recent graduates entering the job field with a career mindset and previous work experience are more likely to snag the job. Career Services has numerous resources
available to students to help them be as prepared as possible. Dr. Winn Stanger, director of Career Services, said there are three things students need to know before starting the preparation process. “They need to know who they are, where they want to go and how to get there,” Stanger said. To help students understand who they are and what their strengths are, Career Services offers a variety of assessments including personality, strengths and interest quizzes that are always free and available to students. “The assessments can be helpful for them in describing to an employer who

they are and why they should hire them,” Stanger said. Students can meet with counselors to improve their résumés and be pointed in the direction that best prepares them for future job opportunities. Career Services holds several career events each semester, which give students an opportunity to introduce themselves and engage with employers. Since the majority of employers in the career field look for previous work experience, internships are a critical tool in preparing students. In a recent study, 93 percent of managers and executives said they were more likely to hire students with internships

than students without. Using the resources available in the Career Services helps students learn the skills necessary to differentiate themselves from others competing for the same position. The Career Services offers mock interviews for students to receive feedback and learn skills that help them be more confident in who they are and what they have to offer. Stanger said most students who go into a job interview after only doing one or two interviews in their life will most likely be nervous. If they aren’t prepared, they won’t do as well as the student who has practiced and prepared. Comment on this story at signpost.mywebermedia.com
