Waldo: Student, Athlete, and Scholar You see him on posters and program covers, at athletic events, and on campus. He is involved in a long list of college-related activities including such things as ROTC, the nursing program, and, of course, the football games. Who is he? He's Waldo the Weber State Wildcat. But just who is Waldo the Wildcat? And from where did he come? No one knows for certain where the name "Wildcat" originated, but it is believed to have been derived from a 1928 newspaper clipping in which WSC athletes were described as "scrappy as a bunch of wildcats." From that date on, WSC athletic teams have been known as Wildcats. But it wasn't until 1964 that Waldo was created. Waldo's creator is Mr. Dean Hearst, who is currently serving as Vice president of College Relations. Mr. Hearst was asked to design a cartoon character to represent the Wildcat football team by Mr. Gary Compton, then assistant athletic director. Hearst has been drawing Waldo ever since.
