For most students, part of the college experience is learning how to navigate and apply for financial aid and scholarships. While students have to become financial aid aficionado, many may not realize the multitude of resources available for students who need financial help still out there.

According to data from CollegeBoard, a notfor-profit organization aiming to expand access to higher education, the national average of annual tuition for public four-year colleges for the 2019-20 school year was $10,486 for in-state residents. For the same school year, Weber State University had an average of $5,986 for annual in-state tuition, which was well below the U.S. average.

WSU may be more affordable than most of its peers, but a $5,986 bill for one year of education is still nothing to scoff at, especially for students who will be paying for tuition on their own.

One resource to help students pay for college offered by WSU is the Dream Weber program. Beginning in 2010, the program originally set out to provide free tuition to students whose annual household income was $25,000 or less. Now the program offers free tuition and general student fees for annual household incomes below $40,000.

Dream Weber is available to undergraduate students who meet the income requirements, have less than 150 completed credit hours, are legal Utah residents and qualify for federal Pell Grant funds.

Through the WSU student portal, students have access to the university’s scholarship applications, which are required to be completed annually in order for applicants to be considered for scholarships through the university or through their individual college.

Scholarships are applicable to a wide range of students with special circumstances or those who meet standards of academic excellence.

Some scholarships may be specific to academic programs, as is the case with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) scholarships. As part of a push from the Department of Education to encourage American advancement in those crucial fields, WSU has received funding that supports disadvantaged students who are pursuing certain STEM degrees.

Another critical field that receives scholarship funding as incentive to attract students is teaching. The Terrel H. Bell Scholarship supports WSU students that have been admitted into the Teacher Education Program, and the Troops to Teachers Grant helps former military service members become teachers.

Last year, in the wake of the pandemic, WSU received a total of $5,857,113 as part of the CARES Act to help mitigate the economic damage caused by COVID-19, according to the WSU site. A total of $4,077,487 of that money was distributed directly to students in the form of emergency financial aid grants, as of Dec. 31, 2020.

While the Biden administration has not yet been sworn into office, it is still unclear what a possible future relief package would look like and when it would be distributed.

The first step in applying for and receiving any university or federal financial aid is completing the FAFSA online before applying for specialized scholarships on the university portal.

Every year, students who want to receive federal funding for higher education need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA. Each year, the form is mostly the same, but the 20212022 forms have had some changes.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, FAFSA has made some slight changes that may affect students. While the type of information needed to fill out the form is still the same, this form will use information from students’ or parents’ 2019 tax forms. Those filling it out still have the option to do it online or mail in a printed form.

Because the form will use 2019 tax numbers, those who’ve lost jobs or whose income

drastically changed because of COVID will not be effected.

One of the other changes on the 2021-22 form is the expected family contribution of zero rose from an annual income of $26,000 to $27,000. This means that families who make $27,000 or less will be expected to make no contribution to their child’s tuition while families who make $27,001 and above will have an EFC toward their child’s college tuition.

If a student or their parents have and EFC of zero, they will receive the maximum amount of aid available through federal financial aid.

As income increases above $27,000, less aid will be offered to those students.

The earlier a student submits a FAFSA, the better chance a student will receive federal, state and university aid.

The FAFSA opened on Oct. 1, 2020, and each college will have their own deadline for when a FAFSA needs to be submitted by. WSU’s priority deadline is on April 1.

Even if students feel they may not be eligible for aid, filling out the application is free, so even if you don’t receive aid now, it could make sure you get the aid you deserve in future semesters. Students may also not be eligible for any other scholarships or grants if the FAFSA is not filled out.

Once a FAFSA is submitted, WSU will review the application and may ask students for more information. Once the application has been processed and is ready to be accepted, students will need to log into their eWeber portal and select the correct aid year and accept or decline aid they will use towards the coming semesters.

Students have to complete the FAFSA each year to be eligible for scholarships and grants.

Once students receive federal aid, the process isn’t over. Students still must stay in good academic standing to keep their aid. Other policies for maintaining financial aid can be found at the Weber State Financial Aid website Students who are worried about filling our their forms or have questions can find help across campus. The Weber State Money Management Center has resources to help students with the FAFSA and other grant and scholarship sources. Their website also has resources for taxes, stimulus relief checks and unemployment due to COVID.

The Nontraditional Student Center helps students with financial aid applications and much more.

Higher education is important to nontraditional students, but with other big priorities in their lives, such as marriage or children, making time for and having the income to finish school can be difficult. The Weber State University Nontraditional Student Center works with students to bridge that divide.

With locations at the Ogden and Davis campuses, the NSC provides scholarships for students who are veterans, over the age of 25, have a spouse or committed partner, are divorced or widowed and/or are a parent.

The center helps students with financial aid applications, child care, tutoring, learning skills for academic success and getting involved in extracurricular activities and clubs at WSU.

According to the NSC’s website, 56% of students at Weber State University are considered nontraditional.

The NSC was created for students who didn’t go to college right out of high school and for those who are returning students, and WSU has specialized scholarships provided for students who qualify as a nontraditional student.

There are six different scholarships for nontraditional students, and each has different requirements. For example, the Mike and Heather Loughton Scholarship requires the applicant to be enrolled in the College of Science, be a single parent who shows financial need and have a GPA of at least 2.5.

Some of the scholarship applications require students to write an essay explaining why they need the extra help in paying for school and to obtain a letter of recommenda-

tion.

“It’s a little bit of extra effort, but for $500 to $1,000? It’s worth it,” Trisha Beckstead, lead peer mentor at the Davis Campus NSC, said.

Beckstead was a nontraditional student herself when she attended college, and she said one of her favorite things the NSC offers is their outreach program. She said nontraditional students often prioritize their family and home life before school, which can leave them feeling disconnected from the school community. However, the NSC gave her a sense of community on campus when she wasn’t sure how to become involved.

“I wouldn’t have done half of the things I’ve wanted to if I hadn’t been on the committee,” Beckstead said. “One of my jobs was sitting at a booth to promote on campus, and that was hard for me. But that was also my favorite be-

cause they help me and I get to help them.”

One of the problems nontraditional students may run into is that their high school transcripts are not valid anymore, so not all of the traditional scholarships and financial aid they need are readily accessible to them.

However, with the help of the NSC, nontraditional students are provided with scholarships designed to make it easier for them to afford their classes.

In past years, Beckstead said the scholarships the center provides don’t always get used. She encouraged those who need financial aid to look into the scholarships to ensure the money goes to those in need.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a lot of shifts for clubs and organizations across campus, including a complete move to online meetings or a pause on meetings all together. However, some clubs can’t be shifted to an online format, which means new precautions had to be taken to stay in person and stay safe.

Joseph Richey, president of Weber State University’s Big Band Swing Dancing Club, found himself trying to keep his club safe.

The Big Band Swing Dancing Club at Weber State was set to begin hosting events in the spring of 2020. Those plans were altered when COVID-19 shifted everything to a virtual format in March.

The pandemic presented a challenge to more than just the Big Band Swing Dancing Club – most organizations have had to find different ways to connect with members and hold safe activities.

With increased safety measures and regulations, clubs and organizations at WSU have been given permission to hold in-person activities again.

The Big Band Swing Dancing Club took advantage of this privilege and held its first club meeting on Sept. 29 at Mount Ogden Park. The meeting was held both in-person and via Zoom.

At the beginning of the meeting, Richey presented the rules everyone would have to comply with in order to attend club events. These rules included a 50-person maximum attendance at any event, masks, social distancing and dancing with the same partner for the duration of the activity.

Some of these restrictions were put in place by the university, while others were decided by the club presidency as the best way to minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Heather Cimino, coordinator of clubs and organizations at WSU, said, “We want students to still feel safe and comfortable on campus even with these additional guidelines and restrictions we have to follow.”

Cimino also said that she has been impressed with the response of the clubs and student leaders who are taking the situation seriously, even giving up some of the things they want to do, in order to keep their members safe.

Even with in-person activities being an option, some clubs have opted to stay virtual.

There are challenges of being mostly online, as well as positive outcomes from these changes.

Shannon Stephens, the Spanish Club president, noted that Zoom events during the fall 2020 semester were better attended than in-person events before the pandemic.

“Now people can just stay home to join the meeting, which is really convenient,” Stephens said.

Ambassadors for the Entrepreneurship Club, including Ellie Fochtman, have an assignment to contact professors and attend virtual classes to promote the organization each week. Fochtman embraced the changes and is moving forward.

“We’ll adjust again when things calm down,” Fochtman said.

Similar sentiments were shared by the Student Alumni Association President Brianna Nordgren, who said, “We’re doing the best with what we have been given.”

Nordgren said she misses being able to connect with people on campus, and she is hopeful that more events can be held in-person soon.

With a majority of classes being online this semester, outreach has been a challenge for clubs.

“I definitely think we would have more members if we were connecting with people on campus,” Richey said.

Nordgren agreed that connection is harder online. “It is hard to reach new members,” she said.

“People have to actually open an email and join a Zoom with strangers, and that just isn’t very likely.”

On the other hand, Cimino noticed that students are eager to be involved and that “there’s a desire from a large group of students that are craving that interaction and that in-person campus life.”

The question now is when will things change enough to allow for more involvement and in-person events on campus?

The answer is uncertain and the future of the COVID-19 pandemic is unpredictable. For now, clubs and organizations are being optimistic and using the resources available to provide recreational and academic experiences for WSU students.

Weber State University’s dining services has been struggling to keep up revenue throughout the pandemic, while students have even more complaints.

Sodexo, which runs the campus dining services, has seen an 80% reduction of revenue and a 60% reduction of work force. Dining services on campus have been consolidated to the union building and all services are closed by 3:00 p.m. with the exception of Starbucks, which is open until 5:00 p.m.

Jessica Alford, general manager of dining services, said she and her team have been working hard to sustain dining while still providing great service to the 500 students living on campus.

“The global pandemic has affected us in just about every way you can imagine,” Alford said.

Alford also said they have adjusted the way they deliver food. One way they have done this is by relocating the resident dining pr-

gram to the Union Building to accommodate the smaller number of students living on campus with meal plans.

Tia Jochimsen, a junior studying communication, said she missed having services at the dorms.

“I genuinely don’t understand why we eat at the union instead of the dorms,” Jochimsen said. “They used to give us exactly what we ordered, and now it’s buffet style.”

Jochimsen also said the dining services are trying new things this year, and she’s seen newer food items. She has seen an increase in Asian, Italian and Mexican cuisines but said it wasn’t always promising.

“It’s honestly hard to know if it’s worth it to walk to the union for dinner some nights,” Jochimsen said. “They have rounded out the menu to include more options this year, but it doesn’t always taste good.”

Other students living in the dorms also found the change of location to be inconvenient.

“It would be nice to have dining back at the

dorms again,” said Robyn Downard, a freshman studying English. “Walking to the union each night eats up a lot of time, and it’s especially stressful on nights I have a lot of work to do.”

Moving dinner back to the dorms isn’t the only change Downard would like to see.

“There are a lot of greasy food options and eating that all the time gets gross,” Downard said. “Sometimes it’s hard to find healthy foods, and I would appreciate more healthy options.”

Alford said she and her team are working hard to find creative ideas that will help students.

“We have looked for innovative, out-ofthe-box programs and solutions to sustain us during this time,” Alford said. “We don’t have a lot to lose, so we are more willing to try new things to increase revenues and maintain relationships on campus.”

Sean Lagerquist, a second-year zoology student, saw the changes as an improvement.

“Some of the food has been higher quality,

and they do a great job sanitizing the tables after every meal,” Lagerquist said. “It’s been nice to take home a meal using a carrying box.”

Along with the changes being made for students, the dining service has been making changes for the staff, too.

With far fewer students on campus this year, the dining staff has had to find ways to keep their own energy and spirits up, including implementing programs to increase team morale. One way this had been done is by taking time for daily affirmations to support the staff.

Alford said this trying time has reminded her to be grateful for her team.

“On a personal level, I have really come to more fully appreciate every member on my team and the skills and talents they bring,” Alford said. “Sometimes when you go through a difficult time, the thing that stands out is the thing you are most grateful for.”

With under three minutes left in the opening half of Lamar Jackson’s third straight playoff appearance for the Baltimore Ravens, the team found itself trailing the Tennessee Titans 10-3.

Anyone watching the game who’s followed football for the past three seasons knew the Ravens often faltered when down early.

Last season after Jackson took home an MVP trophy, and an overall terrific season as a team, was all for not. Baltimore was hammered back down to earth by the Titans.

It wasn’t just Derrick Henry running the ball all over them either, but the Ravens coaching

came into question—again.

But this game began almost the same as last year’s on my TV screen. The difference this time was that Baltimore didn’t flinch when down early.

Jackson, with his Ravens down by a touchdown and the first half almost in the books, took off up the middle and cut to his right, running 48-yards for a game-tying touchdown.

But Baltimore received the kickoff after half and never looked back, just hanging on to seal the win with electrifying runs for first downs from Jackson and J.K. Dobbins that kept the clock rolling.

Even though Jackson’s career’s just begun, he’s already one of the most unique football players to ever set foot between the white lines and is easily one the most exciting.

In the 2018 NFL Draft, Jackson was picked 32nd overall by the Ravens.

Being the last pick of the first round, and the the fifth quarterback selected, showed that even after an electrifying college career at Louisville—that included a Heisman Trophy and

breaking multiple school records—many draft evaluators and teams believed his game and style of play wouldn’t translate to the pro level.

Now, after only three seasons of pro football, the quarterback out of Boynton Beach Community High School in South Florida has the Ravens two wins away from every player and team’s ultimate goal in pro football: the Super Bowl.

Despite carrying the Ravens to the playoffs each of the three seasons and hoisting an MVP trophy, many still doubt him.

But Jackson’s 48-yard touchdown run, which catapulted the Ravens from the Wild Card round into what could be a potential Super Bowl push, is now one of the defining plays of his young career.

Quite the accomplishments for a player who Hall of Fame GM Bill Polian suggested should consider changing positions from quarterback to wide receiver before the draft.

Polian’s views have become the most heard and seen but coming out of Louisville, many NFL teams thought he couldn’t throw.

He proved his doubters wrong after he threw for 36 touchdowns to only six interceptions and led all quarterbacks in touchdown passes from the pocket in his MVP season last year.

“Not bad for a running back” was Jackson’s go-to saying after games, and he couldn’t have been more right to say so.

He’s proven he can throw, but he’s not shying away from his special talent as a runner.

The whole NFL and football-watching world has seen how dangerous he can be with his feet.

According to Pro Football Focus, Lamar’s tied with Cleveland running back Nick Chubb for the most 20-yard or more runs with 35 since 2018. Jackson’s also had 10 games of 100-yards rushing or more following only behind Michael Vick’s 11 games.

Michael Vick’s single-season rushing record was one that seemed as though it would stand forever, but that was before Lamar Jackson.

Mark Ingram coined the motto for the team, which wants to play through Jackson and for him, even though it seems at times the coaches don’t want to.

Jackson has now dubbed the phrase ‘Big Truzz’. Baltimore certainly needed it after this past season which was a far cry from the success the team had in 2019, when the team went 14-2 and earned a first-round bye, along with home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

But after rushing for 136 yards to NFL leading rusher Derrick Henry’s 40 yards on Jan. 10, Jackson’s closer to holding up the Lomabardi trophy in a storm of confetti than he is to the trying season that’s behind him.

“They’re gonna get a Super Bowl out of me.

Believe that,” Jackson told reporters after last season’s playoff exit.

Now, having gotten over the hump of the Titans, Jackson and his murder of Ravens head

north to the Queen City, where the Buffalo Bills await them in what could be a snowstorm.

Bill’s quarterback Josh Allen’s had a season to remember, throwing for 37 touchdowns and breaking Jim Kelly’s Buffalo franchise record of 33 touchdowns through the air in 1991—a year the Bills also appeared in the Super Bowl.

The Bills sent a first-round pick this offseason to Minnesota for Stefon Diggs, and to put it simply, the Vikings clearly weren’t using Diggs enough, considering the season he put up for the Bills. he led the NFL with 1,535 receiving yards.

This is a spectacular matchup between two great up-and-coming quarterbacks. Comparisons have already been made, as Allen and Jackson are form the same draft class.

Each has a unique playing style and approach to the game.

However, while Allen has a more conventional approach, not everyone’s a fan of Jack-

son’s style and leadership, but his teammates believe in him and love his style and that’s all that matters for a quarterback.

Jackson led his teammates off the field after defeating the Titans without shaking hands.

While some saw this as disrespectful, it was an eye for an eye.

During the Ravens-Titans matchup in the regular season, Titans players had warmed up on the Ravens logo and taunted Baltimore Head Coach Jim Harbaugh.

“There wasn’t a reason to shake hands,” Jackson said after the game.

Ravens defensive back Marlon Humphrey told the team’s website about the team’s confidence in their quarterback, how Jackson spoke to the team before the game and how they all felt like they would win because of it.

Jackson said in a postgame interview this season, “I’m a kid from South Florida. And kids from South Florida play football. It’s what we do.”

His mindset was on full display when a video posted to Instagram showed Jackson running barefoot playing football with neighborhood kids over the offseason in his hometown.

Social media outrage set in with fans and analysts being distraught and confused while saying he shouldn’t be playing like that because he’s going to hurt himself.

But that’s what makes him so good on Sundays. He’s all about football.

No matter where or when—he’s ready to play ball.

The Ravens may come up short against the Bills, but Jackson is 24 years old and, while nothing’s certain in the NFL, he’ll more than likely have Baltimore back in the playoff hunt with the full support of his teammates and of course – their ‘Big Truzz’.

LOOKING BACK ON A VIRTUAL SEMESTER: WHAT WE’RE KEEPING AND WHAT WE’RE TOSSING

When Weber State University moved to a virtual format in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, major adjustments had to be made to keep the campus running. This included making adjustments to the class delivery options for fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters.

Prior to fall 2020, WSU only offered standard face-to-face classes and entirely online classes. The pandemic spurred the creation of “virtual” class meetings held only through Zoom, and “flex” meetings held by a combination of in-person and through Zoom.

Fall 2020 enrollment showed 30.8% of all students in virtually formatted classes and only 10.2% of students in a full face-to-face class. In 2020, WSU used over 900,000 hours of Zoom for classes, meetings and events.

In most cases, there was a mix of love, hate and tolerance. Some of the things students addressed were the ease of one-on-one meetings with professors via Zoom and the challenge of figuring some things out on their own.

Isaac Bravo, a finance major, had always taken in-person classes prior to the pandemic.

“I believe the interactions you have with teachers and students inside the actual classroom are an integral part of the learning experience,” Bravo said.

Despite this belief, Bravo found good options in virtual classes and Zoom meetings.

“Most of my professors have made the transition very smooth and are extremely driven to provide the best learning environment possible,” Bravo said.

Bravo said there are challenges with technology, noting an experience he had when trying to give a presentation over Zoom.

During his presentation time, the internet at

his house disconnected twice, interrupting his presentation and resulting in him having to leave the class meeting and present another day.

“My experience has mostly been positive, but I’ll probably go back to in-person classes when that option becomes available, because I am more focused and engaged in an actual classroom setting,” Bravo said.

Kimberly Wright, an interior design and technology major, said she loves virtual learning and that “you’d have to physically drag me back to in-person classes.”

Wright was a student who commonly took online classes prior to the pandemic, with only a few of her classes requiring a physical, faceto-face setting.

“I don’t think any of my professors thought they could teach all of their stuff online, and now that they’re being forced to, they might have opened their minds to the possibilities a little more,” Wright said.

She’s grateful her laptop was already set up with the programs she needed before classes moved online last spring. She isn’t convinced virtual classes are going to be the next big thing going forward after the pandemic, but she does think that there will be an increase in online and virtual course offerings.

Haylee Short, a zoology major studying to become a physician’s assistant, had a chemistry lab on campus during fall semester and the rest of her classes online.

“I had never taken online classes before because I knew it would be a much harder way for me to learn,” Short said. “When the pandemic is over, I fully intend to go back to all face-to-face.”

Short talked about how her major is very hands-on and there is a lot of work in labs. She said it has been a challenge this semester being away from campus and having to do a lot of learning on her own.

“I think Zoom is a great way to communicate with my professors, but it’s been much harder to connect with my peers and form study groups to help each other,” Short said.

Short said she felt like fall semester went much more smoothly than the previous spring semester. She said she would like to continue using virtual options for meetings with professors but doesn’t want to do virtual classes ever again in the future.

Marcus Garong, a health administrative services student, has mixed feelings about virtual classes.

“I want the virtual option to continue into the future because there are several classes that I can take online and add to my schedule while spending less time on campus,” Garong said.

Though he wants virtual options to continue, Garong had a hard time adapting to virtual classes to begin with. At the beginning of fall semester, he made mistakes such as buying the wrong book and completing the wrong week’s assignment. He said he could’ve avoided those mistakes, had the classes been in-person.

Garong said technology helps him get into contact with people who can answer his questions, but that he has still struggled to find help for classes that are online.

Despite everything, Garong said he has really enjoyed his Zoom meetings, and in the future, he plans to take a mix of face-to-face and virtual classes.

The adjustment to Zoom has affected professors just as much as students. Professors have had to put in a lot of extra work in the shift to virtual classes, and the work is ongoing as they strive to provide the best learning environment possible.

March. She said a lot of what she’s doing now is still trial and error, and she is continually updating her classes to try and provide the best experience for all her students.

Howerton said one of the hardest things is student engagement during Zoom classes.

“My teaching style is very much about question asking. I like to ask my students questions and I want to spark discussions,” Howerton said. “Zoom has made it more challenging because people don’t want to interrupt or have a hard time knowing when to comment.”

Even with the challenges, Howerton believes that all students can be successful.

“It takes a little more self-motivation from students, but I think anyone who’s willing to try will find something that works or them,” she said.

Daniel Hubler, a professor in the child and family studies department, had taught many online classes in the past. He said the move to virtual was difficult, but he feels like the virtual format of classes has helped him feel connected with students, even when it isn’t face-to-face.

“It has definitely forced us to focus more on improving our online content quality,” Hubler said. “I feel that many of my classes have improved in structure because of the efforts to make it better for students online.”

Hubler is planning to incorporate some virtual formatting in his future classes, especially more optional Zoom meetings for online classes. He believes that virtual meetings and learning will be a beneficial tool.

“I hope this becomes an opportunity for us to increase our reach and to help more people accomplish their academic and professional goals,” he said.

Fans are a little over a month away from watching the Weber State Wildcats play their first football game since their loss to the James Madison Dukes in the FCS playoffs back on December 21, 2019. The ‘Cats will be looking to win their fourth straight Big Sky championship, while also hoping to notch the program’s first-ever national title.

The expectations in Ogden remain the same, but in the Big Sky, things will look a little different. On Jan. 15, Portland State, Montana and Montana State opted out of playing against conference foes and will instead participate in a modified season in preparation for the 202122 fall season. Both Montana schools cited COVID-19 and weather conditions as reasons why they will not play a six-game schedule or participate in the playoffs.

Their reasoning incites a rising question for the upcoming spring season that likely won’t be answered until the fall, how safe is it for these teams to compete in two seasons in less than half a year?

This upcoming FCS spring season would feel odd. The biggest reason why is because a bunch of teams that normally kick off at the end of August are now doing so in February. Another reason is because out of the 127 programs, 27 of them have opted out. This leaves 100 teams — including WSU — that will compete for a national championship through a shortened season and then play in the fall.

As of right now, the Wildcats’ only opponent that needs replacing on the schedule is Montana State, who was set to play at Stewart Stadium on March 6. The Big Sky conference has not yet announced a new schedule in light of the changes.

Unless the entire schedule is changed, the Weber State Wildcats will kick off their season in Pocatello against the Idaho State Bengals on Feb. 27.

Michal Kozak has been making his mark at Weber State.

Kozak’s in his senior year for the Wildcats.

He plays forward and wears number 11. He played in all 96 of Weber State University’s games in his first three seasons. Kozak was able to score a total of 589 points in those games.

Michal Kozak is from Pilsen, Czech Republic and was born on April 8, 1998.

When it was time to pick a college to play for, Kozak had a choice between California Polytechnic and Weber State.

“When I went there [California Polytechnic] for a visit,” Kozak said. “I didn’t like the basketball environment as much as I did like the one at Weber State.”

Kozak values the atmosphere and environment when he plays for a team. He liked the

way Weber treated their basketball team. Another thing Kozak enjoys about WSU is that one of the assistant coaches is also from the Czech Republic.

Kozak said when he was about seven to nine years old he went to his first basketball practice. He says the coaches are probably one reason why he got into basketball.

Although he liked different sports, Kozak could never focus on them as much as he did on basketball.

“I just never really got into any other sports,” Kozak said. “I just never stopped loving basketball.”

In 2015, Kozak went to Spain and participated in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Camp. “[The camp] was an amazing experience for me,” Kozak said.

He said kids from around Europe were selected to go to the camp. Kozak says he got to meet NBA players Ricky Rubio and Cody Zeller

while he was at the camp.

“I think it just showed me how good I need to be to be successful,” Kozak said.

Kozak also decided to attend Get Better Academy for two and a half years in high school to improve his basketball skills.

“I achieved what I came there for,” Kozak said. “Got picked by Weber State. It was a really hard academy.”

Kozak said the head coach used to play for Butler University, so he knew the skill and work it took to get players like Kozak to NCAA level.

Kozak was also a part of the Czech Republic National Team from the U15 level to the U19 level.

He says that team helped him travel around Europe, which let him learn about different countries and cultures.

He says his favorite college basketball memory is beating BYU. “It was such an amazing game,” Kozak said.

“They came there ready to play. We were ready to play. It was a high scoring game. We won that game. It was just such a great feeling because we were heavy underdogs to them and just to go out there and surprise such a good program was a great achievement to us.”

Kozak says that a lot of his time is spent focusing on basketball and school. He watches a lot of basketball, like NBA, NCAA, and the league in the Czech Republic. Though, he says that he likes to spend time outdoors and hang out with friends in his free time.

After graduating from Weber State, Kozak would love to play basketball professionally.

He would also enjoy seeing the world while doing it.

Kozak’s enjoyed being a Wildcat, and wants to keep chasing his dreams after graduation.

The highly anticipated 2021 season for the National Hockey League has just kicked off this week with uncertainty and doubt.

Last year, the NHL season was unlike any other since league play was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Having a long pause with no games played left many people to wonder if this season was also going to be canceled.

The last time a season was cut short was during the 2012-13 season when the league had a lockout because the NHL and National Hockey League Players Association couldn’t compromise on financial issues. This caused the season to only have a 48-game season since they started later than expected in January 2013.

Returning to 2020, the start of the NHL playoffs was a success since the 16 teams that participated were held inside a bubble to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Eventually, it was the Tampa Bay Lightning who claimed the ultimate prize in hockey which is winning the Stanley Cup at the end of the most bizarre season in the history of the National Hockey League.

With the pandemic continuing to effect almost every aspect of life nowadays, the NHL has decided that the only way to have games this year was to make adjustments.

Instead of the standard 82-game regular season that every team plays, the league and the NHLPA both came to an agreement that it would be shortened to 56 games because the start of the season was postponed until Jan. 13.

Changing the alignment of divisions was inevitable as there were many discussions up in the air on how to handle the pandemic in the NHL. The resolution was to have teams divided up in different regions of North America so that they wouldn’t have to travel across the country during a global health crisis.

Originally, the 31 teams in the NHL would be divided up into two conferences, the Western Conference and Eastern Conference.

This season, however, will not have conferences, but four divisions.

Since the United States-Canada border has strict guidelines, the North Division will consist of all seven Canadian teams: Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers.

The East Division looks to be anyones for the taking. The Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins will all go up against each other this season. Only the Devils and Sabres didn’t make it to the bubble last season, so this division could be a toss-up.

In arguably the weakest division out of the four, the Central Division looks to be dominated by the reigning NHL champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning. The other team in the Stanley Cup Finals last year, the Dallas Stars, will also participate in the Central division along with the Nashville Predators, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings and Florida Panthers.

It will be very interesting to see who will come out on top of the West Division between

the Colorado Avalanche and Las Vegas Golden Knights as they have been arguably the two best teams in the Western Conference for the past couple years. Their competition will include the Arizona Coyotes, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues in the West Division.

Each team will only play against their respective divisional rivals. In the North Division, the seven Canadian teams will play each other 9-10 times while the East, West and Central have eight teams each and will play eight times against their division foes.

The playoffs will have 16 teams, the top four in each division, and will start against their divisional opponents in the first round.

First place will play fourth and second place will play third. The two teams that win each series compete in another series to see who wins each division.

Once the divisional rounds are over, it’s on to the brand new Stanley Cup Semifinal. Any other year, the Conference Finals would take place, but with the realignment for this season, the traditional playoff format will be on hold. The division winners will battle for the opportunity to move on to the Stanley Cup Final.

There is a possibility that both teams who make it the Stanley Cup Final are originally from the same division or conference in any other ordinary season.

This will also be the first season where sponsors of companies and/or corporations will be worn by the players. Instead of advertisement logos on the jerseys like soccer and basketball, the NHL will now have advertise-

ments on both top sides of the helmet instead of each teams logo.

An interesting move by the NHL was that they will not be holding their games at a bubble this season. Instead, the league will allow each team to play at their home arenas and allows them the option of if they want to allow a limited number fans back in their stadiums as long as the each teams local government allows them to do so.

The NHL is trying their best to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak, but it will only be a matter of time until the pandemic may become a league-wide issue in the next few weeks to come.

Anyone could see right now that the start of the NBA has not been successful in preventing the spread of the virus. Not being played at a bubble had serious consequences, so why does the NHL not see the warning signs?

Games in the NBA have been canceled left and right. One after another, teams don’t have enough players available to play games because of positive tests or contact tracing which causes the games to be postponed to a later date.

There have already been numerous amounts of players contracting COVID in the NHL and with the games not at a bubble, it will continue to wreak havoc across the National Hockey League.

When thinking of endangered species, most people often think of the panda, the African elephant or the white rhino. Here on Weber State University’s Ogden campus, a specimen of endurance lives on University Circle Road right on campus; three giant sequoias.

Sequoias are one of the plant kingdom’s largest species. These plants are related to the famous redwoods of California. These redwoods and their native range once spread across the Pacific Northwest stretching down into lower Colorado.

Settlement of these lands has caused the population of many indigenous species to dwindle, making the sequoia a rare sight, especially in the deserts of Utah.

Amy Roberts a member of the Salt Lake County Forestry department points out some trees around the city. As her truck takes bends through the busy streets one would imagine the trip going deep into the typical Utah mountains. However, her trip does not take

her into the Uinta’s, it takes her to a park instead.

“There are dozens of these transplanted trees all around Utah,” Roberts said. “This one’s been here for 30 years or so. They do better where we can keep an eye on them and where people aren’t going to accidentally cut them down.”

Forestry efforts have done their best to save the sequoias in Utah. One of the methods used to save these trees is to relocate them.

This method was used in 2008 to move WSU’s sequoias.

Troy Bell, head of Weber’s landscaping, said the move for Weber’s sequoias was difficult as moving these big trees can be dangerous.

“After decades of living in the same soil, it can be quite traumatic to move to a new place,” Bell said.

Bell said that you can tell which trees have been moved because of the cables and stakes in the ground. Due to the size of these trees, most of the cables will have to stay on for the rest of the tree’s life.

that swept through Ogden. The storm caused many large trees to be knocked over.

“Sequoias roots are actually quite wide.

They can stretch twice as far as the tree’s branches,” Bell said.

This wide stance helped keep the trees upright in the storm.

In Sept. 2020 the Sequoias would be tried again as another traumatic windstorm ran through Utah. This storm was even more devastating than the previous one. Many of the trees in the area were ripped out of the soil and had to be taken down or had traumatic injuries from the event.

“There’s been severe injuries to the trunks and limbs of the other trees on campus. Our wonderful arborists are trying their best to save as many of these trees as possible. Fortunately, our endangered sequoias have made it out unscathed,” said Mark Halverson, Facilities and Campus Planning associate Vice President.

Giant sequoias, like many plants, are bisexual individuals. Instead of having male or female individuals, they produce both spores

and fruit. Although this fruit is different from apples or bananas, rather they produce cones.

Although Weber is proud of its three sequoias, there are many others that are being moved and killed because of human activities.

“While some plants will greatly benefit from the changes, mostly those who are opportunistic, those happy close to human settlements, and those doing well with whatever long-term change occurs in a place, the, likely vast, majority of plants will not fare well,” Katharina Schramm, professor of botany at Weber said.

Our three giant sequoias were moved here over just 12 years ago, but they could live for thousands of years.

Schramm said that trees can restore habitats and increase soil sealing. Her department and the botany club are happy to assist anyone with questions.

Students interested in participating with Weber State University’s performing arts programs during the 2021-22 school year, and maybe even get scholarships for it, should apply to their program of interest.

For students interested in participating with Weber State University’s performing arts programs during the 2021-22 school year, and maybe even get scholarships for it, now is the time to act and apply.

The different departments of the performing arts are music, dance and theatre. Students interested in auditioning and participating do not have to be studying performing arts majors or minors.

For the music department, entrance and scholarship auditions are now being accepted virtually. This includes auditions for orchestra/ strings, band/brass/woodwinds, percussion, piano and vocal/choral groups.

According to the Performing Arts page, faculty will begin reviewing auditions on Feb. 13. While this is not the deadline, those who apply by Feb. 13 will be first to be considered for scholarships.

Patty Coan, administrative assistant in the department of performing arts, said all auditions will be completely virtual for the first time this year.

Auditioning students will need to prepare videos of themselves and submit them online, according to the instructions found on the department page. The page also contains links to forms students will need to fill out and submit. Information about expectations and guidelines for the video submissions, such as scales and pieces to perform, per instrument can also be found there.

Auditions for the dance department are also open to any student interested in performing and dancing. These students, however, are required to also take a dance technique class, such as ballet or jazz technique.

Erik Stern, professor and director of dance, said the entrance and scholarship auditions are typically not something the students have to prepare for, besides being in shape to dance. Those that audition are taught choreography they didn’t know before, and then

they have to present it. Stern said they can learn a lot about someone by watching them learn and think on their feet.

“It’s fun. You don’t have to prepare, but you have to be very present and try to learn things,” Stern said.

However, due to the pandemic, Stern said they are still working out how to hold auditions this year. He said they would be virtual, most likely requiring a video and answers to a prompt, but they are still working out the details and the platform.

The website assures that full information about the process will be communicated on that same page by Feb. 1. Stern said audition dates will likely be around mid-February. Students can also email either Stern or assistant professor Joseph Blake for more information.

Aside from the entrance and scholarship auditions, Stern said specific performance auditions, such as for Orchesis Dance Theatre, are always held the first Friday of the same semester.

the theatre department have already passed as the deadline was in November.

However, similar to the dance department, students can audition for some specific theatre performances during the school semesters. Jessica Greenberg, associate professor of theatre design, said auditions for Innovation Theatre, which will present in April, are now coming up. Those interested should look online or contact the department.

Each department has information about their applications and auditions under their individual pages on the performing arts page of WSU’s website. The pages also contain information about the different departmental scholarships available for each group.
