The Community Research Extension from Weber State’s Center for Community Engaged Learning surveyed all 16 Utah System of Higher Education schools and found almost 40% of students faced food insecurity within the last year according to a press release from WSU. The percentages are higher in underprivileged student communities.

At Weber, over 37% of students experienced food insecurity in the past year, with 21% experiencing very low food security.

The survey was conducted during the fall 2021 semester and chose a random sample of more than 5,600 students statewide. Yesenia Quintana, who served as the primary investigator for the survey and is the evaluation and community research supervisor for CCEL, said this is the first time USHE schools have participated in national food security surveys.

“Hopefully, with this report, we can start dispelling some of that narrative around hungry college students,”

Quintana said in Weber State’s press release.

“There’s all kinds of jokes around students eating ramen and cereal for dinner. It’s not very funny when you think about it, the fact that many college students are hungry.”

At about 47%, first-generation students across all USHE schools are almost 13% more likely to experience food insecurity than non-first-generation students. In addition,

students of color are nearly 48% food insecure, with only 36% of white students reporting the same.

Nearly 61% of non-binary students are food insecure, and female students are almost 5% more likely to experience food insecurity than male students.

About half of food-insecure students in higher ed in Utah do not eat or go hungry to cope with it, but only 15% access food pantries. WSU students matched the overall Utah percentage.

WSU, which operates the Weber Cares pantry in room 224 of the Stewart Library, will use the data to expand outreach efforts.

sponsible for the care of their siblings are nearly 68% food insecure, and those who take care of their parents or grandparents are 56% food insecure.

Food insecurity also affects a student’s GPA: the average GPA for a food secure student was 3.59, while a food insecure student’s average GPA was 3.40.

Students who require special diets because of medical conditions are at high risk of food insecurity, with 72% reporting they have experienced it. At Weber, almost 70% of students who reported having “poor” health are food insecure.

“Everybody is impacted by food insecurity to a certain extent,” Quintana said in the press release. “A lot of the universities and tech colleges are working to address it on their campuses and providing students with the support they need, but I think the survey shows how prevalent it is.”

Food insecurity can correlate to other areas of insecurity in a student’s life. Almost one-third of food insecure students struggle to pay rent, and one-fourth struggle to pay their utilities. At Weber, nearly 36% of food-insecure students find it difficult to pay rent, and about one-third struggle to pay their utilities.

“Food insecurity is a symptom of poverty that needs to be addressed,” Katharine French-Fuller, director of community research for CCEL, said in the press release.

“The numbers help make it real. We need to figure out ongoing, lasting solutions like increasing SNAP enrollment.”

The survey showed full-time employment did not eliminate food insecurity, as 38% of students who work full-time report experiencing it in the last year.

Additionally, over half of students who see people they care about less than once a week are food insecure, meaning it may be connected to social issues like isolation.

Fifty-eight percent of students who reported a high stress level also reported food insecurity. At Weber, the percentage of students disclosing the same stress levels matched the statewide average.

“The WSU Research Extension’s data are so compelling, especially related to specific Utah student populations that we’ve suspected have higher rates of food insecurity,” Brett Perozzi, vice president of student affairs, said in the press release. “We have many programs and support services in place, yet these data help us increase our support and target our outreach efforts to

After the doubles matches, before the singles, there is a quick team meeting.

Weber State University’s women’s tennis team finished the regular season with a 7–1 record, clinching the first-seed in the Big Sky conference on April 10.

The Wildcats played against Idaho State University, one of the only three teams in the conference with a winning record. Weber State traveled to Pocatello, Idaho, to beat the Bengals 4–3.

“I am so proud of our team efforts,” women’s tennis head coach RuthAnn Allen said to Weber State Athletics. “Patty Kuo led the

charge back, followed by Ana Morett, Megan Lombardi and Sicely Ferreira to clinch the match. We have fought hard this year as a team and that has made a difference.”

This is Allen’s 29th win as Weber State’s head coach, making her record 12–4 during in-conference play.

Lombardi has been key to the team’s success this season. A junior, Lombardi has not only won more singles matches than anyone in the conference with 13, but the most doubles wins as well with 16, sharing the court with her teammate Yuuna Ukita, who has seven singles wins of her own.

Other players to watch out for in the tour-

nament are Ferreira and Megan Davies, who share the court during doubles. Both players have 10 singles wins each to compliment their four-win record.

Second-seed Northern Arizona, the team that sent Weber State home from the tournament last year, also finished the season with only one loss. Star Lumberjack Elinor Beazley just won Big Sky conference women’s player of the week, the fourth consecutive time an athlete from a team has been awarded the honors. The Wildcats beat the Lumberjacks 4–3 in Ogden the last time they played. Kuo beat Beazley in both matches, scoring 6–2 the first and 7–6 the second.

While tournament matchups have not been decided, Weber State, Northern Arizona and Idaho State are the top three teams in the conference. Portland State University is the next best team with a 3–4 record, followed by the University of Idaho, Montana State University, Eastern Washington University, Sacramento State University and the University of Montana.

The Big Sky conference tournament will take place from April 28-30 in Phoenix, Arizona.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Women’s Center is finding ways to involve students in prevention efforts.

This week’s event was the screening of “The Bystander Moment: Transforming Rape Culture at its Roots.” The event took place on April 11 at noon in the Women’s Center. The film highlights some of the complexities of rhetoric and language surround rape culture, such as victim blaming and sexual harassment, and how the audience’s gender influences messaging about sexual assault.

One of takeaways from the film is shifting the focus to prevention and bystander action.

“We do a lot of work that focuses on response, which is very important and life-saving work, but this year we decided to also do

a prevention event so we can teach folks, ‘This is how you can hold other people accountable, this is how you can educate yourself on these issues, and this is how you can help if you see something that’s going on,’ because that’s a small way we can get folks to get involved and hopefully prevent violence from happening,” Madeline Cooper, violence prevention coordinator, said.

The current status of sex education in Utah was also brought up during student discussion. An article published in the Guardian in February 2021 states, “Utah rejects bill that aimed to teach consent in sex education classes.”

Additionally, sexual violence is not uncommon in Utah. The Federal Bureau of Investigation in November 2021 stated, “The rape rate in Utah has been consistently higher than the U.S. rate.”

Education and resources are available at

the Women’s Center.

“There is a stigma attached to sex in general, and when there’s a stigma attached to sex in general and folks don’t talk about it, then they’re probably not going to talk about sexual violence or lack of consent,” Cooper said.

The Women’s Center offers workshops that can be requested as well as online trainings that are available through the Weber Portal under Safe@Weber. Those who wish to see the film but were unable to attend the event can watch by logging into Kanopy.com with their Weber credentials.

on the men’s teams, noting that women who want to play football have to play on the men’s team.

“A lot of the transgender girls playing on the boys’ teams for some activities isn’t really that bad of a deal,” Birkeland said. “If you’re born and defined a young man at birth and you transition to girl, then go play on the boys’ teams because we expect girls to be okay with that. You should be able to understand how that’s hard, but you’re a girl now, you say, so go feel that pain with them.”

As a figure in high school sports in Utah, Birkeland’s goal is to promote the integrity of the game and to place female athletes in an ideal situation. Morgan Phelps, however, says that the bill needs to factor in the cultural impact of sports.

“Sports matter so much for people who are in them,” Phelps said. “Because it’s so

important, we need to continue fighting for access and for trans people to be allowed into sports.”

Utah has now joined 12 other states to bar transgender athletes from competing in single-sex sports: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.

The history of sports is filled with pivotal players and decisions that have proven they are more than just games. Wherever a person stands, they realize how important the issue is. The future of transgender people in sports will affect far more than athletic competitions.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX, a bill focused on inclusion and equality for female athletes, being passed. Title IX was celebrated in this year’s Super Bowl as Billie Jean King performed the coin toss.

Although not a new issue, the topic of transgender women in high school sports has received national attention, including in Utah.

On March 25, H.B. 11, a bill barring transgender athletes from competing on certain sports teams, was passed despite a veto from Gov. Spencer Cox. In effect on July 1, the bill has sparked a debate over competitive advantages and equality.

One of the people key to the crafting of H.B. 11 was Rep. Kera Birkeland, R-Morgan.

An assistant coach for the women’s basket-

ball team at Morgan High School, Birkeland has been coaching and officiating high school sports for five years. Discouraged with how the lockdown was handled in Morgan, Birkeland felt like she was needed in politics.

“I was pretty frustrated with what I was seeing with businesses being told to shut down and education taking a back seat to a lot of things,” Birkeland said. “I put my name in there. There was another person who did, and then he and I talked, and he withdrew.”

With her background in sports, Birkeland felt like the most qualified representative for this issue.

“I felt like I knew enough about the different super leagues, comp leagues, the different sports and what they do,” Birkeland said.

“I could kind of pick the brain of the parents and the coaches to understand if it was going to be an impact at all in our state.”

According to Birkeland, the bill bars athletes not assigned female at birth from participating in the five single-sex female leagues during competitive situations. These sports include swimming, basketball, soccer,

softball and volleyball.

Many have found this bill discriminatory, including the president of Weber State’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance, Morgan Phelps.

“I don’t think that it’s something that actually makes sense,” Morgan Phelps said.

“Your body density and your height are more impactful than whether or not you’re transgender.”

According to Birkeland, there are still ways for transgender women athletes to compete in one of the five sports. There is, however, a process.

If a transgender woman athlete was assigned male at birth and wants to compete in a female sport, the decision will be discussed by a commission that will consist of a mental health therapist, a doctor, a sports physiologist, a coach or official from the sport and a statistician. The commission’s goal will be to determine the appropriate placement of the athlete.

“They go before the panel and talk about the pros and cons, the dangers, the competitive advantage and those types of things,”

Birkeland said. “They can crunch and see what is the average, typical, appropriate levels for someone of their age and really put together a data-driven, medically-factual comparison.”

Phelps said the bill is exclusionary because it primarily focuses on transgender women athletes being excluded from sports.

“What do non-binary people do in sports?

What do trans men do in sports?” Phelps said. “By that same logic, transgender men should always be losing in sports.”

University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas has been a pivotal figure in the argument over whether transgender women athletes have a competitive advantage.

Thomas won a 500-yard freestyle swim race, recording a time of 4 minutes and 33 seconds. She placed fifth in a 200-yard race and eighth in a 100-yard race.

Although a successful athlete, Thomas hasn’t broken any NCAA all-time records. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, she has aspirations to swim after college and possibly compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Although not a new issue, the topic of transgender women in high school sports has received national attention, including in Utah.

Many have found the H.B. 11 bill discriminatory, including the president of Weber State’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance, Morgan Phelps.

Thomas appears to push through the backlash, however, as she aspires to be a role model for others in her situation.

“I just want to show trans kids and younger trans athletes that they’re not alone,” Thomas told Sports Illustrated. “They don’t have to choose between who they are and the sport they love.”

Birkeland believes that H.B. 11 is still inclusive enough to not have to make transgender athletes answer that question. However, she does believe that they should consider playing a co-ed high school sport.

“What we’re trying to say is there’s 19 activities,” Birkeland said. “Please go compete, have the great time and tell us what activities you feel like you want more of.”

Although meeting before a commission is a possibility, Birkeland believes that transgender women athletes should look to play STAR NEIL | The Signpost

Birkeland first attempted to pass the bill in 2021 and claimed the stories surrounding Thomas didn’t factor into the process of crafting H.B. 11. However, she does believe that the controversies surrounding the swimmer were considered by her fellow legislators.

“I think it really helped us get a lot of support legislatively,” Birkeland said. “What so many people seem not to consider is the backlash that Lia Thomas herself is facing.”

Thomas has had her share of detractors, including prominent swimmer Michael Phelps, who compared Thomas’ abilities to athletes on performance-enhancing drugs during an interview with CNN. “I believe that we all should feel comfortable with who we are in our own skin, but I think sports should all be played on a level playing field,” Michael Phelps said during the interview.

WSU men’s soccer is considered a club sport on campus and is not included in the Big Sky. With any kind of college sport, there comes the difficulties of maintaining a balance between athletics and academics.

Weber State University’s men’s club soccer is an intense team. The team is known for being the first ones to the ball and dominating every chance they get. The 4-3-3 formation is the team’s go-to, which is a composition of four defenders, three mid-fielders and three forwards.

With Weber State’s men’s soccer team being a club sport, they aren’t included on the collegiate Big Sky schedule. However, they do still compete with surrounding schools.

Taggert Ralphs and Ethan Barnette, two valuable members of the team, explained

the advantages of playing at Weber State.

Ralphs, who is entering his second year on the team, says that the dedication and consistency of his teammates contributes to the “great chemistry” of the team on the field.

According to Barnette, the team’s phenomenal coaching gives them an edge against the competition.

“The dedicated coaching staff and their administration work so hard, and their hard work in itself gives an advantage to being here,” Barnette said.

The last national championship win for WSU’s men’s soccer club was in 2011, making it their sixth title all-time, following wins in 1992, 1994, 1995, 2002 and 2009. Since

that 2011 win, the players have been eager to get for a return to a title game.

“I play a role to keep success in mind at all times and to help move the club forward to compete in regionals and nationals in the next couple of years,” Ralphs said.

With any kind of college sport, there comes the difficulties of maintaining a balance between athletics and academics. The team typically practices two to to three times per week and competes 10 times per season.

Despite the hard work, these athletes consider soccer a stress reliever.

“Luckily, even with all of the stress produced by school and other responsibilities, I still have time in the day to be a part of the

team,” Barnette said.

The date and team for Weber State’s season opener has not been announced, but competitions will start this fall.

In a small intimate space, audience members are brought together through dance to experience the importance of community in Orchesis Dance: When Movement Merges.

The performance was on April 7-9 at Weber State University.

Jo Blake, assistant professor of dance, wanted the audience to feel connected like they do in a community. To do this, sheets that mimicked roots hung from the rafters.

“A friend of mine told me about the documentary ‘Fantastic Fungi,’ where they were talking about the roots and how they actually talk to one another and spread signals when they’re being attacked or need to share nutrients,” Blake said. “From there, it kept stemming and stemming, and then we came up with this idea on how does it interconnect and bring all these community members together.”

Dances were performed by the Weber State Moving Company, Ogden Movement Collective and Contemporary Repertory, with students choreographing some pieces. Though each dance was different, they all had the same connecting meaning of community.

They explored different ways of dancing to music. One piece used a singing bowl, a bowl that one hits and slides the stick around the edge to make sound, for most of the piece.

The dancer who played the bowl stayed in the center while the other dancers revolved around them.

Like the singing bowl, they also played a piece on the cello. However, unlike the con-

stant sound of the singing bowl, the cello played sounds that the dancers reacted to.

The dancers were puppets to the musical instrument.

On top of the performances, lights were set up to create shadows on the walls, making it seem as if there were even more dancers performing and added more to the overarching idea that there is community everywhere, no matter how large or small.

“I think it addressed the many aspects of community,” Kassie Serrano, WSU alumni audience member, said, “right down to the individual and how they incorporate and see themselves within that community. Then the ways different communities within the larger express themselves.”

Through each performance, the audience was brought together through dance and were able to see all of the facets and nuances that come with a community.

Marisa Prollo, an audience member, said that she loved the unifying theme. Though each dance was so different, they still had the same theme, and, to her, that was powerful.

Every piece that made up this performance shared an underlying theme of community and even though each piece was unique and different, every one worked together in unison to strengthen the message of community.
